INSIDE THE EFL Heart and Soul At the end of this season I will have had the fortune of working for the league for 10 seasons. As someone who grew up riding his bike up to Surrey Park to watch the Demons go around in First Division in the then EDFL (my Dad still calls it the EDFL!) and who was fortunate to both Phil Murton start and finish my senior EFL Chief Executive Officer footy career in the league, it’s something very close to my heart. While the players deservedly get the plaudits, what stands out in the 10 years I’ve had an official capacity with the league is the people involved. Each year I am both amazed and humbled by the huge amount of work done by the people in our clubs. Our league is only as strong as our clubs and our clubs are only as strong as the people in them. We aren’t always going to see eye to eye but as a collective the community of the EFL buys into the vision of what EFL footy should be. A place to come and feel safe, both on and off the field, while watching the footy (and netball) in an environment suitable for adults and kids alike, both male and female. It was reinforced recently when news came through of the sad passing of Kilsyth FC stalwart Roy Baldwin. Roy was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1983 for his outstanding services to football and cricket and the top oval at Pinks Reserve is named after him. Committee member for 30 years and Secretary for 23 years. Line marker and change room cleaner for 25 years. Roy is a life member of Kilsyth football club, Kilsyth cricket club, the EFL and the RDCA. I heard him speak at Kilsyth FC and he was true gentleman. The wonderful people involved at our clubs is reinforced during the home and away season as you enter the gates at clubs, without doubt one of the harder jobs to fill each week. Barry Wenker at East Burwood has had 55 years of continuous involvement at the club. Having moved down the coast, he drives up for home games to
man the gate and for finals to park cars with the precision of a surgeon. At Boronia, a gentleman by the name of John Allwood has manned the gates for 15 years. Always friendly, there rain, hail or shine. Doncaster East have Andrew Bird whose done it for 9 years. Then there’s John at Scoresby. With the Magpies having been through three divisions recently, many would know him. Always in his blue coat, dressed impeccably with a collar and tie underneath, he has been doing the role for over 20 years. And I’m sure there’s some of you who have incurred the warmth or wrath of Rod Paisley up at Kilsyth. Renowned cricket umpire and local radio broadcaster, with wife Heather they’ve kept the gate at Kilsyth safe for years. It’s the work of people like these that are the heart and soul of our clubs. How volunteers are managed in our game is an area as an industry we need to evolve. Historically, 6 or 8 people have put their hands up to be on the committee and the jobs get spread amongst those people. Others see how much they are doing and are reluctant to step up when the time comes. We need to reframe how we look at it. While many people might not be able to do 10 jobs per week, a lot can, and would happily, do one job if asked. At the heart of the Community Club Sustainability Program is the impact player movement and revenue generation is having on volunteers. The feedback on its introduction from club volunteers has been wonderful. To those committee people and volunteers, particularly Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers who are finishing up this year, thank you for your efforts. I trust your clubs will acknowledge and celebrate your time in an appropriate manner. The next eight days are a wonderful time with three grand finals and Chandler Medal Night. Congratulations to Ferntree Gully on their wonderful win in Division Four. It caps off years of hard work by many at the club and with a strong junior program the rise to division three should hold no fears. See you at the footy this weekend.

EFL FINALS INFORMATION The 2016 Bendigo Bank Eastern Football League Senior Finals series is HERE! FINALS ENTRY The following entry prices (including GST) will apply: ADULT CONCESSION** ALL DIVISIONS FINALS $13.00 $7.00 GRAND FINALS $15.00^ $9.00^ - Children under the age of 16 are admitted FREE to all finals. - ** Concession includes age pension cards, Veteran Affairs cards and disability pension cards - ^ $2 from the entry price of all grand finals will be donated to the Blue Ribbon Foundation CAR PARKING AT FINALS VENUES Car parking inside finals venues may be limited. This will be communicated via the website and to competing clubs in the week leading up to the game. With much larger crowds than for home and away games, don’t assume you will be able to get a park inside most venues as this will not be the case. Councils have also advised that a parking officer will be in attendance, so park only in designated areas.
FINALS UMPIRES The league will supply three field, two boundary and two goal umpires for each finals match. STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH FINALS SCORES Want to know the live scores of other ‘Bendigo Bank’ finals? The EFL Media Team will be using Twitter to bring you all the Around the Grounds Scores. They will be ‘tweeting’ live quarter by quarter scores and ‘re-tweeting’ EFL clubs and fans who are keeping the social media world up-to-date with how their team is performing. But you don’t have to sign up to a Twitter account to get access to live scores! Type in m.efl.org.au in your smartphone’s internet browser and follow the prompts to save as an app. Tap ‘Social’ then ‘Twitter’ – presto, you’ve got live scores!
NO DOGS Dogs are banned at all EFL games. ALCOHOL AT FINALS VENUES Patrons attending finals are not permitted to bring alcohol into the venues. At venues where cars have access to the grounds, a condition of entry is that boots are inspected and this will be rigidly enforced. Apart from ensuring compliance with liquor licensing and council by-laws, it helps to protect clubs revenues from finals. As in past years, there will be a two-can limit on purchases and all alcohol sold will be opened by bar staff on purchase. These are part of the licensing requirements. ONE PAYMENT PER VENUE We’ll again be adopting an approach where your admittance will allow entry for the full day at that particular venue. Each venue has its own admission fee, so if you choose to move between venues you’ll, need to pay a second entry.

So it came to pass that three teams, namely Vermont, Noble Park and Balwyn dominated the Eastern Football League Division 1 for a decade and a half. The domination resulted in the three teams winning 13 of 14 Premierships from 2003 – 2015, with just the one flag going to an interloper by the name of Norwood in 2014. In 2016 it came to pass that these three teams were the remaining three in the Premiership race again and supporters were genuinely excited by the prospects of continued close matches in the finals. This week the Bulls look to carry their finals momentum for another week and will enter the Preliminary Final with as much confidence as you can against Balwyn knowing that they have beaten the Tigers twice already this season which is not something that many clubs can claim since Balwyn joined the EFL. With a solid rivalry already in the EFL these two teams have history going back to the SFL and prior. Noel McPhee @statsbench

With all the drama of very close results in other Divisions, the Division 2 Grand Final has almost snuck up on us. Two worthy Grand Finalists face off as they seek to return to the top-flight. Bayswater have had several stints in Division 1 and even have a Division 1 flag. Wantirna South sojourned in Division 1 twice but for just the one season on each occasion. But again, I get ahead of myself – there is 100 minutes of action to take place before one team will claim a place back

in Division 1. From joining the EFL in 1965 Wantirna South did not make a Grand Final until 1996. This will be their eighth Granny in 21 years. The Waters have looked the team most likely since about half way through the season but Wantirna South have found form at the right time of the year and have summarily despatched of Doncaster East and Mooroolbark.

Last week there were three finals with final results of a goal or less; the previous week today’s Grand Finalists played out a 1 point game; six finals to date with a margin of seven points or less. Templestowe supporters have endured two successive games with a total margin of five points. I am backing another close game this week. Upper Gully are seeking to join a list of 12 clubs who have remained undefeated for the whole season with Vermont and Donvale completing a perfect season twice. The Kings are seeking a return to Division 2 football for the first time since 2013 and have spent over 20 season in Div 2. Templestowe played just the one season in Division 2 in 1998 for one win, a wooden spoon and a return to Division 3. The Dockers are hoping to erase the heartbreak of successive unfulfilled finals’ dreams and complete some unfinished business. Meanwhile Upper Gully have found a way 19 times in a row and a 20th win in a row will reward them with a fifth EFL Premiership. (Coldstream supporters: please look away now – the Cougars are the only team to have gone through a season winning every home and away game but not come home with a flag - back in 1965).

VERMONT: Last week was terrific except that our Reserves failed by a kick to get a Grand Final invitation and that’s what we are after today. They certainly had plenty of chances, but they did not get the score on the board when they seemingly had the game under control. In the end, the extra time could have gone anywhere, but it didn’t go ours. Better players were Matt Barnard, Nick Mendes, Pat Bridges, Rory Sheridan-Ferrie, Alex Wells and Wade McConnon. Good luck today to Coach Paul Breen and the boys, we want everyone at the big day next week with the Seniors and Under 19’s. The last time we had all three was in 2007. SOCIAL:How good was it to have Bernie Dinneen back in town on a surprise visit. We love his energy. The Sunday after the EFL Grand Final is going to be huge, now we have sides playing. See Michael Rennie for your tickets today. Presentation Nights will be Thursday the 29th for the Under 19’s and Friday the 30th for the Seniors. We do have a limit of numbers, so don’t miss out on a fantastic celebration of 2016. We are sorry hear that our photographic mate Garry Sparke is still having medical problems and we wishing some improvement this week.

BLACKBURN: Last week the under 19s returned to Jubilee park to take on Norwood in an Elimination semi-final against the same side that knocked them out at the same stage Last season. This game wasn’t any game; this was about redemption for the boys who 12 months ago were hurt which has spurred them on for 12 months following that loss. It was a tough first qtr. by both sides not giving an inch but the boys led by retuning ruckman Riley Smith dominated the second qtr. to have a healthy half time lead. The boys were told at half time that the iceberg will crack open with 10 more minutes of quality football and when Tom Walton kicked the sealer from the dead pocket to put an 8 goal gap between the two sides it was time to prepare for a Preliminary Final. Best players were Jake “milky” Bellis, Riley Smith Peter Alier, Jhi Aitken and Marcus Young. Winning form is good form in finals and the baby burners head to Bayswater for a tilt at a Grand Final spot injury free and in fantastic order. Good luck to Mat Eccles and the boys the club is behind you and the red army will be out in force at Bayswater Saturday. Best wishes also to Reserves Coach Alan Love and his 12 O’Clockers who prevailed in overtime against Vermont last week to progress to the Grand Final. In what was a most memorable contest the boys lifted in the second half and played an inspired extra time period to get the job done. Let’s go Burners! Future player related functions include Sunday 18th September (day after EFL GF) - Vote Count and Friday 23rd Sept - Presentation Night. There will be more information to follow in the weeks to come. Upcoming social events include our much anticipated Grand Final Eve Lunch - Friday 30th September with special guest speaker and number one horse trainer Darren Weir who will bringing the 2015 Melbourne Cup along with him for discussions about its history and some photo opportunities along the way. MEDIA TIPS - DIVISION 2 Phil Murton – EFL CEO Bayswater by 18 points Matt Clarke has timed Wantirna South’s run to perfection but Bayswater’s fresh legs and run will get them over the line in a tight game. Gordon Parker/Blue Ribbon Medal - Wayne McInerney (Bayswater)
V
Dyson Baker – EFL Media Manager Wantirna South by 21 points There is currently not side in the entire competition in better form over the last few weeks than the Devils. Wantirna South have been scintillating in both their finals following on from a solid finish to the home and away season. Wantirna South are a team of champions however if a couple of old heads can get off the leash early they will be able to sew it up early in the contest. Gus MacLeod – EFL Media Team Wantirna South to win by 18 points Division 2 has been a rollercoaster ride for all involved, with Bayswater being in front seat. Wantirna South have caused some of the major upsets in 2016 and I think they will be able to cause another one. With two convincing finals wins, The Devils will make it three and we will see Wantirna South in Division 1 next season. Gordon Parker/Blue Ribbon Medal – Brad Hutchinson (Wantirna South)
Ben Warren-Smith – EFL Broadcast Manager Bayswater by 15 points They have been the benchmark all season and today will be no exception, Bayswater have been preparing this finals preparation for a number of years and are primed for the assault. Gordon Parker/ Blue Ribbon Medal – Joel Galvin (Bayswater) Wayne Brasher – EFL Media Team Bayswater by 9 Points Bayswater thoroughly deserve their rating as flag favourites. They boast one of the best defences and have many goal scoring avenues and have produced consistent performances right through the season. On the other Wantirna South’s form since the bye and leading into the Grand Final has been extremely impressive. In what is shaping as a classic contest Bayswater will get the job done but Wantirna South will push them all the way. Gordon Parker/Blue Ribbon Medal – Wayne Mcinerney (Bayswater) Ray Baird – EFL Media Team Bayswater by 36 points Bayswater will win the flag in Division 2 as they have been by far the best team in this division for most of the season. BAYSWATER: We are enormously proud of the fact that our boys have made it to the big day and as a Committee, wish all the coaches, players, trainers and support staff every ounce of luck. Wantirna South are very worthy opponents and as we line up against them in seniors and reserves today we hope we have the resources to overcome. The selected players have certainly earned their positions and for those unlucky enough to miss out, the club thanks you greatly for your efforts during the season in assisting us to get to this position. We believe we have the ability so let’s prove it to the members and supporters who have shown faith in us so far this year. Thanks also to our generous sponsors, without your contribution we wouldn’t be here today. Everyone is invited back to the rooms tonight for what we hope to be a double celebration. You can do it if you believe enough. Go Waters.

Go Waters.

LILYDALE: Grand Final Day is here! Well done to Tim Wilson and our U19 team for making it here. Whatever the result, it is a great effort to get to the Grand Final. It is also a fantastic achievement that eight of you played at least one game of Senior football, we three had representatives in the EFL U 19, the team went through undefeated and 16 of you will be in our Senior ranks next year. All fantastic signs for the future of the Lilydale Football Club. After the game today, everyone is welcome back to the rooms, food and refreshments will be available.

Gus MacLeod – EFL Media Team Upper FTG to win by 40 points Upper Ferntree Gully have been a dominant force in 2016 and they have developed a trend of winning big games and this trend will continue on Sunday. Templestowe have played 3 tough games in 3 weeks and won’t have enough left in the tank. Les Leete/Blue Ribbon Medal - Anthony Mariani (Templestowe)
Les Leete/Blue Ribbon Medal – Matthew Bain (Templestowe) Ben Warren-Smith – EFL Broadcast Manager Templestowe by 10 points Third times a charm, this club has been preparing for season 2016 for the last three years and finally they get another shot at the title. Coached superbly by Rick Irwin the Dockers will finally take the next step that has alluded them for the last three seasons. Les Leete/ Blue Ribbon Medal – Leigh Murphy (Templestowe) Wayne Brasher – EFL Media Team Upper Ferntree Gully by 12 points Upper Ferntree Gully have had the classic preparation for a Grand Final appearance and are ready and primed to fulfil their destiny. Standing in their road is a battle ready Templestowe seeking finals redemption from past failures who have absorbed three games of finals pressure to make it to the last dance. After what I see as a tough encounter early I feel Upper Ferntree Gully might have the extra run late in the game to get over the line. Les Leete/Blue Ribbon Medal Ryan Murray (Upper Ferntree Gully)

GRAND FINAL
UPPER FERNTREE GULLY: Great effort by all involved with Upper Gully this year having all three sides playing in the Grand Final today. Good luck to Chad, Bruce and Garry alongside all the players; lets make this an historic occasion. The U19’s started well last week leading by 6 goals at quarter time only to let Heathmont back into the game. With Upper down by 2 goals at three quarter time the boys rallied and played well to kick 4 goals to none in the last to secure their Grand Final berth. The reserves led all day in their contest against Boronia to join the U19’s alongside the seniors in the Grand Final. Good to see Tim Riseley, Tate Hickleton, Andrew Godfrey and Adrian Tapscott rewarded with selection in the EFL Division 3 Team of the Year squad. Also well done to Josh Begley on making the TAC Cup Team of the Year; a great achievement after only being picked up by Eastern Ranges after the season had started. Congratulations to Hunter Greenall (U15) and BrodyStone Edwards (U12) who both won EFL B&F awards last week to cap of a great season. Presentation Night is on the 17th September at the Clubrooms, tickets are $65 which includes 3 course meal with drinks at Bar prices, limited tickets so get in fast for what will be a huge night. Thank you to all our sponsors for 2016 and especially our Major Sponsor Ferntree Gully Toyota and Gold level sponsors LPS Waste Services, FTG Motoring Group, Frawley Signs, Action Events and Mystique Printing. TEMPLESTOWE: Minor Premiers in the Reserves narrowly and second place in the Seniors brings the finale this Sunday for both teams against UFTG – the stage is set for a great Division 3 Grand Final Day. The Reserves had a week off but are ready for the contest. The Seniors fought out another tight Final’s game against a determined Ringwood Redbacks outfit in the Preliminary Final, Coach Rick not leaving his charges in any doubt pre game as to what was at stake. Q1 saw Ringwood with a narrow 1 goal lead. Half Time saw The Stowe in the rooms leading by 7 points. Each side scored evenly in Q3 with The Dockers increasing the lead to only 9 points – anyone’s game in the run home. What a nail biter, both teams giving their all in the last term. Final result a 4 point win to the Dockers with the crowd blocking out the Final Siren to a play in the Ringwood forward line. The faithful will be back at the Wharf post game for the celebration of the 2016 season. Presentation Night 7th October at the Manningham Club – see Nicole Muleta to get your tables together. The Dockers are committed to supporting our Community through the RSL, Doncare and will be continuing to fund raise during the season. Congratulations to Hunter Greenall (U15) and Brody-Stone Edwards (U12) who both won EFL B&F awards last week to cap of a great season. Presentation Night is on the 17th September at the Clubrooms, tickets are $65 which includes 3 course meal with drinks at Bar prices, limited tickets so get in fast for what will be a huge night.
