FOR ALL SEASONS FY23 3

A Letter from Our CEO DEAR FRIEND, My heart is filled with gratitude for you – our donors, volunteers, friends, and partners. Your support has played an integral role in how For All Seasons has helped change the conversation around mental health and how we provide services in our community. Your belief in our mission is not just a gift – it’s a lifeline. By standing with us, you have affirmed your commitment to ensure that For All Seasons remains a place where everyone can receive the mental healthcare they need, no matter what. A simple ‘thank you’ falls short of expressing how vital your support has been, especially in challenging times. The stark reality is that insurance and grants alone cannot sustain the breadth of mental health and victim services we offer. When our grant funding dwindles and the cost of providing care surges, it is your unwavering commitment that helps guarantee our life-saving work continues. As you read through this annual report, I invite you to take time and reflect on the ways your support impacts our community. I also ask you to think about the future. While we have made great strides, we are not done. Please consider additional ways you can help us build and sustain a healthier and more resilient community. From the bottom of my heart – thank you.

OPEN ACCESS

Helping Clients Access Same-day Care The For All Seasons Open Access program is the first fully implemented mental health delivery model of its kind on the Eastern Shore – allowing clients to walk in for mental health services and have treatment start that day. Launched by the agency in FY23 with support from the Grayce B. Kerr Fund, Open Access has allowed the agency to eliminate our waitlist and, as a result, create 20 new appointments each week. The program streamlines the intake process, providing same-day access to mental healthcare, and minimizing unnecessary wait and suffering. Abbie, an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), was eight months pregnant when she responded to a call where she had to do CPR on a three-monthold baby who had suffered cardiac arrest. She was unable to resuscitate him, and the baby died. Months later, while bathing her three-month-old daughter, her

baby began exhibiting cyanosis, associated with Reynaud’s Syndrome, the development of a bluish-purple hue to her skin. This event triggered an association with the trauma Abbie had experienced as an EMT with a baby of the same age, and she was struggling to work through the episodes alone.

DONORS LIKE YOU enable same-day care, ensuring timely services instead of months-long waitlists. Learn more about Open Access

“It was just a perfect storm when the flashback happened. I had already been experiencing postpartum depression, and my daughter had been a difficult baby as she had severe allergies,” Abbie recalls. Abbie reached out to her supervisor at work, who promptly connected her to For All Seasons. Through the Open Access program, Abbie was seen immediately instead of waiting for months on a waitlist. She states, “It was an amazing process, and I cannot say enough about it. The intake and evaluation were very organized and structured. They made it comfortable, and I was not afraid to share my story. They also connected me

to a psychiatrist for medication adjustments. And, it all happened in a very short time.” “I also really liked that the staff requested for me to be placed with someone who specializes in therapy for first responders. I had never had a therapist who understood my job and what I was dealing with.” Abbie can now bathe her baby again by herself, and she has learned to work through those times of anxiety/postpartum depression with ease. While the baby still experiences cyanosis, Abbie no longer experiences the triggers from her past trauma. “Through the therapy I received and the right medication, I feel like a whole different person. I’m genuinely happy, and things don’t make me anxious like they used to. I have been able to handle similar pediatric calls without having those anxious feelings,” Abbie shares. “In my field of work, we see bad things daily. Although we can talk with co-workers, my therapist is there to guide me and help me deal with it in a way that enables me to function and live a full life.” FOR MORE INFORMATION on Open Access process, times, and locations visit ForAllSeasonsInc.org/openaccess

For All Seasons is home to one of the largest outpatient psychiatry teams on the Shore, led by double-boardcertified psychiatrist Dr. William Cerrato, our Chief Medical Officer. Embracing a holistic, patient-centered approach, our psychiatry team works handin-hand with our clinicians and Rape Crisis Center staff, underscoring our belief in a comprehensive continuum of care. Through our Open Access program, new patients needing psychiatric evaluations meet with a member of our psychiatry team within ten days of beginning care at For All

Seasons. Beyond evaluations, our medical staff provides medication management aimed at symptom relief and recoveryfocused treatment plans. Appointments are offered inperson or through telehealth. In addition to Dr. Cerrato, our dedicated team includes three psychiatric nurse practitioners and three medical assistants. Our medical assistants conduct vitals, facilitate scheduling, and provide seamless connection between providers and patients. This integrated approach ensures our patients heal in an environment of expertise and compassionate care.

MEET JENNIFER

Blanketing Our Community in Hope For All Seasons, with support from Talbot Family Network and others, provided a week-long training taught by the founder and worldwide expert of the Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) modality, Daniel A. Hughes, Ph.D. During a time where stories like Jennifer’s (below) are more prevalent than ever, we now have a network of over 20 DDP-trained therapists across the Shore. In 2001, Jennifer became a foster parent. It wasn’t too long before Jennifer made the decision to adopt her foster daughter and son – both of whom were drug-exposed premature infants with fetal alcohol syndrome. The challenges in their younger years were many for both children and when they became adolescents, the difficulties escalated especially for her son, who eventually needed to receive treatment in a residential facility.

While her son was in and out of residential treatment centers, Jennifer sought additional support for her family, and she learned that her children had Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). Finally, with this information, the challenges that Jennifer’s family had been experiencing started to make sense. In 2021, Jennifer was referred to Lesa Lee, LCSW-C at For All Seasons who at that time was one of only two clinicians on the Eastern Shore certified in treating children with RAD. “Over time, while working with Lesa, I learned that I can’t be reactive to a child with RAD. I learned to do a lot of pausing, soul searching, and thinking about what I’m going to say to my son and daughter...” “As parents of children with RAD, you can spend the rest of your life looking for that magic button that you believe is going to somehow lessen the intensity of RAD. You can’t get antibiotics to ‘fix it’ or love RAD

REACTIVE ATTACHMENT DISORDER (RAD) is a condition where a child doesn’t form healthy emotional bonds with their caretakers (parental figures), often because of emotional neglect or abuse at an early age. We see higher rates of RAD in children who have been fostered or adopted. Children with RAD have trouble managing their emotions and can find it difficult to feel safe and secure within their families. Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) is a treatment approach to trauma, loss, and/or other dysregulating experiences and can be used for children with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD). out of your children. The key is understanding that we have to learn new skills and tools to parent RAD children while using a new way of thinking...” she adds. “For once in my life, I am not scared to open up about what I am going through. I felt like I had let these two children down in some way, but my therapists have helped me realize I didn’t do this to them and that what we were experiencing was not my fault. I told Lesa that I would have never survived this if it wasn’t for her,” Jennifer concludes.

IN THE MEDIA

Inspiring Our Community For All Seasons educated over one million viewers through informative mental health campaigns and programs delivered in our region and across the state.

Life is Messy. Let’s Talk About it.

Suicide Prevention PSA

Our No Matter What...You Matter suicide prevention campaign included Public Service Announcements in both English and Spanish, encouraging our community to reach out and check in on one another. For All Seasons Interpreting Services Supervisor, Alberto Ardaya, was featured in our Spanish PSA.

Celebrity Mental Health Advocate Comedian and actor Cedric the Entertainer passionately advocated for mental health in our annual Give With Your Heart campaign. He shared, “I make people laugh all the time, but it’s important to know that I can have services when I need it. That’s why we all need to get involved and make mental health count in our community.”

For All Seasons provides educational resources for the community on important, timely mental health and wellness topics. The agency’s podcast and video series, Bring on the Mess!™, hosted by CEO Beth Anne Dorman and Chief Clinical Officer Lesa Lee, embraces the messiness of life through real conversations. Bring on the Mess!™ is a positive resource helping individuals and families build understanding and resilience as they navigate every day experiences with mental health and wellness. Dorman and Lee also examine what everyday courage looks like and the many ways it can be defined. They weave in their experiences with therapy, courageous leadership, and raising children. Topics have included Helping Our Kids Be Their Best Selves, The Stress of the Holidays and Taking Care of You, Seniors and Mental Health, Dealing with Grief, and Food Relationships.

A day for our Rape Crisis Center Advocates may include: Providing support and guidance to a victim of crime by accompanying them during a court proceeding for a protective order. Traveling to the county Department of Corrections to meet with detainees who are victims of sexual violence for one-onone consultations, offering them care and resources. Responding to an incident of child sexual abuse by supporting a child and his mother as they meet with law enforcement at the local Children’s Advocacy Center. Visiting the local food bank to secure food for a survivor who is unable to shop in public since her sexual assault. Responding to a call from a nurse at the local hospital to meet with a victim who has been sexually assaulted. This includes bringing a Comfort Kit complete with clothing, hygiene items, a journal, and other personal items that allow a survivor to leave the hospital with dignity.

Just because survivors have experienced trauma does not mean that they can’t gain that control again in their life,” comments Advocate Brittany Middleton, who works alongside her team to provide support to victims, as well as outreach and education on sexual violence in all five counties on the Mid-Shore. “There are victims who don’t realize they have survived a serious trauma and don’t know there is someone to support them from the beginning to the end. It is rewarding for me to be that person and help them take those first steps needed for healing.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING & ONLINE SAFETY

human trafficking is in your community.

Support Begins with Prevention

Last year, For All Seasons joined a statewide network of agencies working to respond to and prevent human trafficking. Our Human Trafficking program offers support to survivors and their families, and provides community outreach, awareness, and education. While many on the Eastern Shore believe that human trafficking is a distant issue, our region – and especially the Route 50 corridor – experiences a high volume of cases. A number of known factors increase the prevalence of human trafficking on the Eastern Shore, including rural communities,

poverty, close proximity to airports and largescale public events, and more. Additionally, with youth having increased access to the internet and smart devices, technology plays a big role in putting youth at risk. The overwhelming majority of human trafficking cases – 83% in 2020 – involve online solicitation. Preventing human trafficking is complex and requires a creative approach. Knowing that online safety is key to prevention, For All Seasons provided regional schools with activities that helped children and families learn tools to keep kids safe from predators and potential trafficking

situations. “The online safety activities provided by For All Seasons helped teachers guide our elementary students in developing smart habits that will protect them from the various dangers they may encounter online,” states Katie Fox, Community School Program Manager at Easton Elementary School.

Approximately 12% of For All Seasons Rape Crisis Center clients were identified as victims of human trafficking in FY23. “The partnership between Easton Elementary School and For All Seasons fills a critical need for mental health support for our students and families.”

OUTREACH & EDUCATION

Backpack Giveaway

Approximately 1,500 people attended the For All Seasons 2023 Annual Back-to-School Supplies Giveaway and Resource Fair. The agency distributed more than 650 backpacks stuffed with supplies to local students. A large team of dedicated staff, volunteers, and resource providers made this a memorable evening for local children.

Beth Anne Dorman and Jessica Bellis

Mental Health and Plein Air

For All Seasons partnered with Plein Air Easton, the largest outdoor painting festival in the country, to focus on the importance of mental health and wellness at this year’s tenday event. CEO Beth Anne Dorman presented to the artists and staff during orientation, and the agency provided artists, staff, volunteers, and visitors a variety of print and digital tools to combat stress and promote self-care.

Going ‘back to school’ is something a community does; it is not one family, one business, or one school. It is all of us together. Many families are hurting, and need supplies. We make sure every child can start the school year on their best foot.

—Jonathan Qvarnstrom, Outreach and Marketing Associate at For All Seasons

For 20 years, we have been providing our competing artists with information on their health, but not until now have we thought about their mental health. If we’re creating a high-stress situation, then it’s our responsibility to provide additional support. We are grateful to For All Seasons for helping create that support.

—Jessica Bellis, CFO and COO of the Avalon Foundation

Be Kind to Your Mind

Easton Elementary students participated in the “Confetti Challenge” for Mental Health Awareness Month. Following the toss, they completed mental health activities created by For All Seasons’ Center for Learning.

DONORS LIKE YOU ensure For All Seasons can reach our community with creative events that provide education, build trust, reduce stigma, and encourage community members to seek mental health and sexual assault support services.

Latino Migrant Resource Fair For All Seasons serves as a bridge, connecting Latino migrant workers to mental health and rape crisis services. Our Hoopers Island Latino Support Group and Migrant Resource Fair provide support and help our migrant workers access food, clothing, medical, dental, and other healthcare resources.

We are creating a lifeline for our migrant workers by helping them find the services that exist in Dorchester County. These workers come here legally, become a part of our community, and we offer vital support they need.

—Ivy Garcia, Director of Latino Services at For All Seasons

No Matter What... You Matter

As part of the agency’s fifth annual suicide prevention campaign, For All Seasons hosted a free community event at the Avalon Theatre, “We All Have a Role to Play in Suicide Prevention.” Dr. Andrew Moon, a leader within the Veterans Affairs’ National Suicide Prevention Program, shared his experience as a practitioner discussing his knowledge of suicide prevention. CEO Beth Anne Dorman facilitated a conversation with Dr. Moon about recognizing signs of risk and fostering an environment of safety.

Frosty’s Holiday Village

For All Seasons sponsored its second annual Frosty’s Holiday Village to spread joy and create connection with children and adults alike throughout the holiday season. Nearly 1,400 people visited the Talbot County Courthouse Lawn in Easton, MD to participate in free activities including professional photos with Frosty & Friends and holiday crafts, while enjoying cocoa, and winter treats, and a continuous showing of Frosty’s Winter Wonderland on the big screen.
