EXUVIAE

[DENSITY, PUBLICNESS, URBANISM] ADAPTIVE REUSE; EXOSKELETON AMONGST TANJONG PAGAR LIES OASIA, A HOTEL RENOWNED FOR ITS GREEN SUSTAINBLE FACADE. HOWEVER THE FACES THAT ARE INHERENTLY ORNAMENTAL, PROVIDING NO SHADE AGAINST THE EAST/WEST TROPICAL SUN. EXUVIAE CONSISTS OF PARASITIC EXTRUSIONS TO THE HOTEL, TRANSFORMING THE GREEN FACADE INTO LIVING URBAN FARMING SPACES. CORRESPONDING HOTEL SPACES BECOME CENTRAL DINING SPACES, ONE THAT VIEWS THE FARMING SPACES AS AN LIVING MENU. FIXED FARMING MODULES ARE STAGGERED AS IT INCREASES IN HEIGHT FOR DAYLIGHTING. IN BETWEEN THE FIXED MODULES ARE MOVING FARMING PODS, WHICH ANIMATES THTE FACADE AS THEY ADJUST THEIR POSITIONS THROUGHOUT THE DAY FOR OPTIMAL SUNLIGHT.

SYSTEMS]

TROPICAL HEAT IS OFTEN AN ASPECT THAT IS REGARDED WITH DISDAIN IN SINGAPORE. IT IS UNDERAPPRECIATED DESPITE ITS IMPORTANCE TO OUR REGION. ONE RESULT OF TROPICAL HEAT IS THE PHENOMENON OF AIR BUOYANCY, OR STACK EFFECT WITH HOT AIR RISING AND COOL AIR SINKING. THIS PROCESS IS THEN DRAMATIZED AND HARNESSED THROUGH SOLAR CHIMNEYS AND MADE INTO A POETIC LEARNING EXPERIENCE WHERE CHILDREN ARE ABLE TO VISUALISE AIR MOVEMENT. FURTHERMORE, THESE CHIMNEYS IMPROVE THE VENTILATION AND COMFORT OF EDUCATIONAL SPACES.

INTERSTICES

[SPACE, AGGREGATION, STRUCTURE] BASED ON THE MOVIE SANDCASTLE, EMOTIVE SECTIONS ARE DRAWN TO CAPTURE THE MAIN CHARACTER’S CURIOSITY ABOUT HIS ESTRANGED FATHER, AND HIS AFOREMENTIONED FATHER WILFULLY CHOOSING EXILE OVER HIS FAMILY. THE QUALITIES OF PAUSE AND MOVEMENT WHILE NAVIGATING THROUGH THE EMOTIVE SPACES AND LITTLE INDIA ARE EXTRACTED TO DRIVE THE APARTMENT ANALOGUE AND AGGREGATION. INTERSTICES SERVE AS AN EXTENSION TO THE CONTEXT OF LITTLE INDIA. CHOREOGRAPHED SERIES OF IN-BETWEEN SPACES OF DIFFERING SCALES AND AMBIENCE THAT CREATES A SENSE OF INTRIGUE FOR ONE TO SEEK OUT THE TEASED UPCOMING SPACES. THE UNIQUE PHENOMENOLOGY OF LITTLE INDIA IS CAREFULLY TAILORED AND RECREATED MORPHOLOGICALLY AND EXPERIENTIALLY THROUGHOUT THE DWELLING.

MIDORI GALLERY

[ARCHI CONSTRUCTION & TECTONICS] THE PROPOSED PUBLIC GALLERY AIMS TO SERVE AS AN EXTENSION TO THE ADJACENT PARK, THROUGH THE CREATION OF A CONTINUOUS JOURNEY WHICH CURATES A SEQUENTIAL EXPERIENCE FOR THE EXHIBITS. THIS ALLOWS THE ARCHITECTURE TO PLAY A ROLE IN THE STORYTELLING AND THE FLOWING CUBES INTERCONNECT THE GALLERY SPACES FROM BOTTOM TO THE TOP. THE STEEL PROPOSAL HIGHLIGHTS THE LIGHT TENSILE QUALITY OF STEEL STRUCTURES, WITH DIAGONAL STEEL STRUTS TO SUPPORT THE CANTILEVERED VOLUMES. THE CANTILEVERS ARE THEN FURTHER SUPPORTED BY A LARGE CENTRAL CORE OF FOUR MEGA COLUMNS BRACED BY EACH OTHER.

HOUSING FOR SILVER GENERATION

THE RETROUVAILLE

[HOUSING FOR SILVER GENERATION] MICRO-COMMUNITIES OF ELDERLY RESIDENCES, CONNECTED WITH STAGGERED VOIDS FOR VISUAL CONNECTIVITY AND FAMILIARITY. PAIRED UNITS ON EACH LEVEL SHARE A COMMUNAL GARDEN TO FOSTER SOCIAL INTERACTION. IN EACH MICRO COMMUNITY, A CENTRAL GATHERING SPACE IS CATERED FOR THE ELDERLY TO CONGREGATE. A LIVELY BUILDING VOID WHERE RESIDENCES ARE CONNECTED FROM FLOOR TO FLOOR, AND ARE ENTICED TO SEEK OUT THEIR NEIGHBORS AND FRIENDS THROUGH VISUAL CONNECTIVITY.

AN ORIGINAL PARAMETRIC SCRIPT THAT CONVERTS SURFACES INTO AN UNDULATING WAVE-LIKE SURFACE WITH STRUCTURAL MEMBERS. WITH 8 ADJUSTABLE PARAMETERS IN PLACE TO CONTROL THE GRID, HEIGHT, DIRECTION OF WAVE FORM, THE SCRIPT CONVERTS STRAIGHT AND CURVILINEAR SURFACES TO FORM PAVILIONS, FACADES, SKYLIGHTS AND MORE.
