Tips to Boost Teamwork in 2019

A

good leader knows they can only be as successful as the team working behind them and it’s always clear when a team isn’t functioning effectively. Morale on the jobsite suffers which can lead to employee turnover and worst case scenario, lost clients. 2019 is still fresh and the busy season is just around the corner. Make sure your team is ready to perform as a team with these tips: 1. Identify Existing Problems & Develop Trust: Nothing is going to get done within a team, or your company as a whole, if there isn’t mutual trust and respect among employees and with management. Your crew needs to trust you and each other to share problems and weaknesses without judgement or fear of discipline. It’s also important to find a way for everyone to connect on a level that isn’t work-related in order to build a strong and lasting bond. These people spend more time together than they do with their family some weeks so make sure you’re providing frequent communication on what’s working and what’s not. This can mean feedback on completed work but also include sharing any questions, insight, praise or problems the team may be having. With trust, team members won’t be as likely to develop defensive behaviors which may lead to problems down the road. 2. Outline Roles & Responsibilities Each person should always be doing their part to get the job done as well as trust their leaders to be guiding others to do the same. Everyone on the crew should know what their role is on the jobsite and know where to step in as needed. Crew members should trust their leader will step in and push the crew in the right direction if needed.

3. Build Commitment & Buy-In People that don’t care about their job or company create “fake harmony.” They may seem OK, but they really aren’t. This can create a negative culture you’re not even aware of. If this happens, the company misses out on the positive energy or contribution that could be gained from an employee who is really all in. That can only happen when they feel like they are part of a team. Encourage your team to share ideas and help make decisions. This helps develop a commitment to the company. 4. Resolve Conflict Effectively It’s normal for conflict to arise in a team setting – there may be a communication breakdown at some point or people may have issues outside the job. How conflict is handled is key and companies should have a conflict management process. If a team member has an issue how should they handle it? Who should they speak to first? Make these practices and expectations clear from the beginning then handle situations quickly to help a team move on and maintain a good working environment. 5. Set Goals & Reward Accomplishments Praising and recognizing a job well done boosts confidence and morale, encouraging your crew to keep up the good work. You may decide to offer small incentives like coffee and doughnuts when they have a month without a safety incident or set a larger goal like a party when jobs are completed on time. here is obviously a lot of excitement and even hype about the future of vehicle technologies to automate the task of driving. When you combine the vehicle automation progress with the potential of connectivity and the shared economy, there are significant signs of an innovation revolution in the transportation sector.

TECHNOLOGY MATTERS FHWA has announced it will develop a new MUTCD to address the needs of automated vehicle technologies. It will likely require 6-in.-wide edge lines and possibly minimum required pavement marking retroreflectivity levels.

As the excitement and hype builds, so does pressure to get engaged and be part of the revolution. One of the questions that many road agencies think about is, “What can we do to prepare our highways for this innovation—to help accelerate the benefits while not sacrificing the needs of human drivers in the mixed vehicle fleet era?” While the question has been hard to answer with complete certainty, the best answer so far is also one of the simplest. We’ve known since at least 2013 that the automotive industry has desired higher standards in terms of uniform applications and maintenance of pavement markings. In 2013, Michael J. Robinson of General Motors testified before the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Highway and Transit saying that, “One of the key highway needs is to provide – at a minimum – clearly marked lanes and shoulders.” In 2015, Elon Musk raised the issue again, complaining about low contrast markings in a tweet. In 2016, Volvo’s North American CEO Lex Kerssemakers lost his cool as the automaker’s semi-autonomous prototype sporadically refused to drive itself during a press event at the Los Angeles Auto Show. “It can’t find the lane markings!” Kerssemakers griped to Mayor Eric Garcetti, who was at the wheel. “You need to paint the bloody roads here!” Audi has now joined the group of unhappy automotive companies. In May 2018 Audi announced that their muchanticipated Level 3 technology (Traffic Jam Pilot on the 2019 Audi A8) will not be available in the United States because of several factors including legal and infrastructural. On the infrastructure side, Audi points to road markings, signage and road configurations that can vary significantly from state to state and region to region – rendering a single solution impractical if not impossible.

DEVELOPING STANDARDS In January 2018, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) published 10 questions in the Federal Register with the intent to develop a better understanding of what was needed from the infrastructure side to support automated driving systems. In May 2018, the FHWA summarized the top themes from the RFI, including, “Greater uniformity and quality in road markings and traffic control devices would enable automation. Having greater consistency in road markings and traffic control devices and an improved state of good repair benefits all road users, including Automated Driving Systems (ADS).” This FHWA finding prompted action within the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (NCUTCD), whose purpose is to

assist the FHWA in the development of standards, guides and warrants for traffic control devices and practices used to regulate, warn and guide traffic on streets and highways. The Marking Technical Committee of the NCUTCD developed a task force to consider the FHWA ADS RFI findings related to markings. That task force reviewed the available research and developed draft pavement marking criteria to engage stakeholders (e.g., automotive industry, highway industry and policy makers). The draft criteria are driven by the needs of the cameras and the software that are used to detect pavement markings. The draft criteria include suggestions to improve uniformity such as dotted lane line extensions along exit ramps and chevron style markings in gore areas (neither of which are consistently

They also include criteria to help the cameras (and humans) detect markings in otherwise challenging conditions such as worn markings, wet conditions, glare, etc. (the suggestions include standardizing the width of edge lines at 6-in. and standardizing the skip length of a broken line to 15 ft.). IMPLEMENTING CHANGE Some agencies are already conforming to these recommendations but national uniformity is lacking. For instance, Michigan and Florida Departments of Transportation (DOTs) have been using 6-in. wide markings for years. Agencies such as Michigan and Florida adopted 6-in. wide markings as a way to evolve their infrastructure to accommodate older drivers. California adopted 6-in. wide markings in 2018 as a way to accommodate automated vehicle technologies (many of the companies pursing automated vehicles are based in California). The point is that the highway infrastructure has evolved before (for the last 20 years there has been a push to accommodate older drivers) and will continue to evolve. The next evolution might be the transition from the human driver to the machine driver. But in the meantime, for the foreseeable future, there will be a mix of human drivers and machine drivers on the road. The challenge will be to find areas where the highway infrastructure can evolve to assist the adoption of automated vehicle technologies while accommodating the needs of human drivers. In October 2018, the U.S. DOT released their highly anticipated document, “Preparing for the Future of Transportation: Automated Vehicles 3.0 (AV3.0).” This document introduces guiding principles and describes the U.S. DOT’s strategy to address existing barriers to safety innovation and progress (https://www.transportation. gov/av/3). One of the most noteworthy

items described in this document (as it relates to pavement markings) is that the FHWA will pursue an update to the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), taking into consideration the needs of automated vehicle technologies, “The U.S. DOT recognizes that the quality and uniformity of road markings … support safe and efficient driving by both human drivers and automated vehicles (pg. 11).”

A draft of changes needed to accommodate automated vehicles focuses on the needs of the cameras and the software that are used to detect pavement markings.

The biggest challenge for the FHWA as they develop a new MUTCD is what to include that will demonstrate their intent to address the needs of automated vehicle technologies. For road markings, there is likely to be subtle changes from current practices. In other words, there will not be a significantly new requirement such as embedded microchips in road markings. However, there may be changes such as 6-in. wide edge lines, and possibly adding minimum required pavement marking retroreflectivity levels (which has been a Congressional mandate since 1993 that FHWA is still trying to fully

implement). Changes likes these have been proven in multiple studies to be good for both the human driver and the machine driver. Greg Driskell, ATSSA Board of Directors member and president of Professional Pavement Products, Inc., said when it comes to AVs and roadway infrastructure, it’s important to talk about the “hurdles” and what is most needed today and tomorrow. “The most important infrastructure element on our roadway system for automated vehicles (AVs) and for Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), is pavement markings,” Driskell says. “There’s a significant and almost complete reliance on pavement markings for the automated vehicle technologies of today. A lot of people think AVs mean the car drives down the road and you’re facing the other direction, working on your computer, but we have partial AVs on the road right now. Honda, Cadillacs, Chevrolets, they all have these ADAS systems and they all depend heavily on being able to see that pavement marking. “A lot of people don’t think we will need signs, traffic signals, or pavement markings in the future, but if you talk to the people who are doing the AV work, they insist that pavement markings are a vital infrastructure asset now and, in the future,” Driskell says. “They have all of these sensors, all this technology, but pavement markings give them confirmation that their sensors are providing good information. Ultimately, the auto side is telling me they’re always going to want pavement markings on the road. How to Streamline

ASPHALT PLANT OPERATIONS

PlantDemand software significantly improves material management and order scheduling, saving time and money

A

sphalt plant employees know there are a lot of moving pieces that need to work seamlessly together in order to get the right materials out to the right customers at the right time. Historically, each moving piece is coordinated by several different plant team members who all need to be in constant contact with each other several times per day in order to make it all work. Daniel Mekis thought there had to be a better way. “When I was a plant engineer for Granite Construction I would have to call all of the sales people and plant

operators and compile their information on what mix was going out on any given day/week/month,” Mekis says. “With that info, I would update mix design information from the QC team and run calculations to come up with the rock, asphalt oil and additives needed for each location. Then I would share that with the quarries that supplied the aggregates and the oil refineries to make sure everyone knew what was in the pipeline.” This process took a minimum of three hours each time and during the busy season would need to be done every few days making it a very time consuming and inefficient process. Using his knowledge of the business and led by a developer named Dennis Schaaf, Shaaf and his team began the journey of creating created PlantDemand, an online tool that helps assist with the scheduling of plant sales, the tracking of orders and the forecasting of material needs…all in one place.

PlantDemand allows plant owners to give their suppliers a longer look-ahead. This means quarries, aggregate plants, refineries and additive manufacturers can warn of a potential material runout, or adjust their production modes as needed to balance their inventories and cash flow, resulting in far less downtime.

IMPROVEMENTS FROM THE TOP DOWN On average, an order at the plant is updated six times before it actually ships. In the past, this would require many phone calls, e-mails and text messages to update everyone involved and communicate the changes to their separate notebooks or calendars. With the old method, scheduling issues were also difficult to spot, so when a plant was overbooked, or a few customers wanted to take several different mixes, some could be turned away with very little notice.

PRODUCTION NOTES PlantDemand changes that, allowing plant operators, sales people, the QC team, managers and engineers to store information in a centralized location. When customers call to request material, the sales people or plant operators can put their order into the shared calendar which is online or in an app that can be downloaded from the Apple Store. “With a longer look-ahead, a visible calendar for the entire team and better communication, issues are identified further in advance allowing time for adjustments to be made without upsetting customers/plant operators/plant supers/suppliers/etc,” Mekis says. “When an order is created or edited in PlantDemand, there is an ‘update log’ so that you know who changed what and when. This way, if the change causes a potential issue, it’s easy to know who to call to discuss solutions.” PlantDemand increases visibility by having a single true source of information (rather than several instances in excel, whiteboards, or personal notebooks). This reduces the redundancy of order taking in multiple places. “The software cultivates valuable discussion about our plant operations, in lieu of “scheduling

meetings” where everyone would just share the information they wrote down in e-mail or notepads from customers throughout the week,” Mekis says. “It allows people the ability to look and plan further in advance which means happier customers, happier plant personnel and less of the 5 p.m. fire drills due to an issue on the dispatch for the next day.” UPTIME IMPROVES BOTTOM LINE And planning further in advance can have a positive impact on your bottom line. “When plants are able to schedule further ahead, they can work on increasing their revenues by scheduling external customers on days where they have capacity to do so,” Mekis says. The software also allows plant owners to give their suppliers a longer look-ahead. This means quarries, aggregate plants, refineries and additive manufacturers can warn of a potential material runout, or adjust their production modes as needed to balance their inventories and cash flow, resulting in far less downtime.

“Some PlantDemand customers have been able to more easily calculate asphalt oil (bitumen) needs to the refineries and in some cases get bulk purchase discounts amounting to hundreds of thousands of dollars per year,” Schaaf adds. The software also has a customer portal so customers of the plant can see a version of the calendar that shows what materials are being made on which days without sharing confidential parts of the calendar. They can create a request that gets sent to the plant for approval to have their order added to the calendar. The software cost is $450 per month and can be deployed immediately to interested plants. PlantDemand doesn’t limit the number of users and doesn’t charge a per-user fee, allowing everyone involved in the plant operation to have access to the calendar, without an additional cost. This results in users getting more value out of the tool by having more eyes on it.

And while training is available to help get the team up and running, it’s often not necessary as the tool is very intuitive. “We often help new customers with a bit of training remotely, as most of the setup is quite simple,” Schaaf says. “We can also help plants get started if they need by adding their materials and mix designs, invite their team, setup other specifics to their plant, etc. It’s pretty easy though, and we have academy how-to videos in our online academy that most new and existing users find useful.” Schaaf says there are only three reasons plant owners wouldn’t want to get started: they don’t have the time, they don’t have the money, or they don’t think it’s going to work for their culture that may not be ready to go digital. “As far as time goes, we help do initial setup so if they want, they barely need to touch it and the time invested will be saved within a few weeks,” Schaaf says. “In terms of

money, it doesn’t cost anything for the first month, and after that, the subscription fee is less than the startup and shutdown waste costs for a single shift. Plus we guarantee they will gain a large value from using PlantDemand. If they don’t think it’s going to work, they can ask our current user base what they think of it.” SO WE ASKED PlantDemand already has users all over the country who are benefiting from the technology so we took the PlantDemand team up on their challenge and asked one of their current users what they thought. Gallagher Asphalt, based in Thornton, IL, starting using PlantDemand in August 2018 and plant manager Don Gallagher says they immediately saw the benefit of streamlining their ordering processes.

Meet The Team PlantDemand was a direct result of frustration from Daniel Mekis who has 10 years of experience in the asphalt materials industry. Mekis partnered with software engineer Dennis Schaaf and after many months of development, great user interviews with plant operators, sales people, QC team members, managers and engineers, they launched their beta tool. Schaaf and the development team worked closely with plant personnel using the tool, continually releasing improvements to the software. Schaaf’s experience compiling user interviews and understanding how they think, what they expect and what they need, helped make PlantDemand what it is today. User Experience Expert Peter Dijkgraaf joined the team over a year ago to help formulate user journeys and create interface designs so that it is always easy to understand how the app works and what function can be found where. He makes sure to listen closely to feedback from customers and truly understands their needs.

"We have three asphalt plants and two people who take orders for them and send them out to each plant manager," Gallagher says. "Each e-mail that was sent was a little bit different than the one before and if changes happened or follow-ups were needed, orders started to get messy. We really needed a way to streamline our ordering processes." Gallagher says that with PlantDemand, his sales people can enter orders and a PDF is created which generates a consistent report that every person sees, regardless of the plant location, eliminating confusion. "Instead of digging through 15 e-mails to find what we need to have ready for the next day, sorting through quantity and mix changes from our customers, the PlantDemand software creates a centralized location for all our information to see how many tons we have scheduled for any given day," he says.

Gallagher says the team was able to implement and start using PlantDemand immediately, setting all three plants up within a few hours and the time savings were felt right away. "PlantDemand has definitely decreased the time it takes our team to sort through and figure out our orders," Gallagher says. "When you have multiple people trying to figure out the same thing, time adds up pretty quick. With PlantDemand, we are saving a minimum of 10 hours a week having all the information in one place."

HOW TO PREVENT BAGHOUSE

Proper procedure, attention to detail and operator training are keys to avoiding disaster

A

s a part of my company’s mission, I am privileged to be able to travel to some pretty nice locations around the world to work on peoples’ asphalt plants. A few years ago, I took a crew and went out into the Caribbean to do some extensive upgrades

to an older 6-ft. ALmix Drum plant. At that time, we rebuilt the control house which had become a rat’s nest of loose and frayed wiring due to so many people trying to fix various problems. For some reason, people seem to seldom try to tidy up after themselves. As a result, control panels can look like a big jumbled bundle of wires. The best thing to do in these cases is to simply strip out all the old and build it back new. We replaced all the switches with modern 22 mm, built new feeder controls, AC controls and installed a new Systems, Inc. ADP-100 Blending

PRODUCTION NOTES Even the Goyen Pulse Solenoids were ruined from the heat radiating off the baghouse. The flames were so intense in the exhaust fan that the impellor softened up and distorted.

Computer. We also built a new baghouse pulse control system that was automated and linked to the AC inject. This way, the pulsing stops when there is a hot-stop and the pulsing picks up where it left off when the plant is restarted. If the pulsing were to start back at the beginning, even dust flow can be disrupted under certain circumstances. Considerably more fines would then happen when the system gets back to the bags that haven’t been pulsed in the proper sequence. We built a new burner control and incorporated an over-temp shutdown safety that killed the burner if the baghouse inlet temperature exceeded 380° F. TIME FOR TRAINING I sent the crew home and it was my turn to train the plant personnel. When teaching new plant operators to run plants, one thing I stress is that when you are starting up cold, after the baghouse is warmed up, you need to incrementally adjust the burner to keep the baghouse inlet air around 330° F. That way, the very first mix that comes out of your drum will be very close to useable, depending on how you have your timers set-up.

The difficult part is having patience to not get the baghouse inlet too hot and trip the over-temp safety or in other words, stack out the plant. This young plant operator was easily distracted and kept stacking out the plant on start-ups, no matter how many times I reminded him. Several times while I was trying to train him, I had to chastise him for lack of attention. I would even catch him texting during this critical time. It got so bad that I even recommended to the owner that he replaced the guy. But, alas the kid was his nephew so he stayed on at the plant. We struggled along like this for several weeks and he slowly seemed to get better. After six weeks with the kid, I returned to the mainland thinking all

would be fine. But three weeks later, we got a call that the kid had set the baghouse on fire and I needed to bring a crew over to repair the plant. When we got back, the pictures with this article show what we found. With a little investigation, I discovered that the kid had turned the baghouse over-temp shutdown safety up to 425° F. Not a good thing since bags start burning at a little over 400° F. We rebuilt their baghouse, repaired the burnt wiring and Goyen Solenoids and got the plant running again. In the meantime, the company lost about 25,000 tons of production to their competitor. Again, we told the plant owner that the kid had to go. But no, he just needed more training the owner figured. So I stayed there with the kid for another month. I thought all was good, the kid really seemed to get the fact that he was solely responsible for what had happened. His remorse and the additional training had me convinced that the kid had “seen the light,” but just a month later the owner called. The kid had burned it down again. This time the owner wanted me to sell the plant for him. As it happened, I had just received a call from a client in Jamaica looking to buy a used plant. When dealing with compaction, keep your focus on these four main areas

T

he paving industry relies on compaction to increase pavement density and extend pavement life. A study by Washington State concluded that the life of a pavement can be extended by two years for every 1% increase in final in-place density achieved. It makes sense then that most states incentivize contractors for achieving and exceeding density numbers. “Density is not only a top quality indicator, in terms of how long the pavement will last, but it is also a top pay item in most state specifications,” Todd Mansell product application specialist for Caterpillar, Inc says. “In most states, contractors are paid incentive or disincentive (financial penalties), based on the final, in-place density of asphalt on the roadway. In extreme cases of low density, contractors may be required to remove and replace the new asphalt if it does not meet density specifications.” This is why managing density is such a key issue at this year’s World of Asphalt conference in Indianapolis. Mansell says there are many factors that contribute to contractors having to “chase” density on a jobsite, but there are four main things you should pay attention to. getting density. If it is paver speed, they know that, they can speak intelligently to their manager or foreman to slow down the paving operation.” However, training is only effective if there are people in the organization who are willing to enforce what needs to be done, for example, slowing down the paver or adding more rollers to maintain a higher paving speed. “The paver operator and crew must understand how their job affects compaction as well,” Mansell adds. “It’s a TEAM effort to be successful with density on the road.” 2. TEMPERATURE Creating density is easiest when you’re at the highest temperature for the type of mix you’re using. Typically, asphalt comes out of the plant at about 300° F. At that temperature, it is relatively low viscosity and is readily compacted. As the mix cools, it sets up and compaction becomes increasingly difficult. “Whether it is conventional hot mix or warm mix or any other type asphalt mix, it needs to be rolled and compacted while it is hot,” Mansell says. “Asphalt has a relatively short shelf life before sufficient compaction cannot be achieved.”

3. PROPER ROLLER & ROLLING PATTERN The rolling pattern affects density primarily as it relates to making the required number of roller passes while the mix is still HOT. The required number of roller passes is determined in a test strip or control section. Most times, this is simply part of the first day’s production. An efficient rolling pattern that covers as much of the paved area in as short amount of time as possible is generally the best approach to a rolling pattern. First, you have the breakdown roller which develops the majority of the density in an asphalt layer. It works immediately behind the paver where the asphalt is the hottest and it must match the production and speed of the paver. According to Mansell, steel drum vibratory rollers are most often used directly behind the paver as breakdown Creating density is easiest when you’re at the highest temperature for the type of roller you’re using. 1. TRAINING Training plays a big role in helping roller operators know what factors affect density. This includes how the settings of amplitude and frequency on steel drum vibratory rollers and tire pressures on pneumatic rollers affect the ability to achieve density (see sidebar on page 56). “Knowing when to make changes and what changes to make are key to being successful,” Mansell says. “Training helps operators identify why they are not

JOBSITE INNOVATIONS rollers and they will achieve the largest increase in density while the mix is at its hottest coming out behind the screed. Typically, pneumatic tire rollers are used in the intermediate position behind the breakdown roller, although pneumatics can be used very successfully directly behind the paver in the breakdown phase of compaction. “Using pneumatics for breakdown directly behind the paver is more common in northern states where colder

temperatures dictate achieving density as quickly as possible,” Mansell says. “It takes a skilled operator to run a pneumatic tire roller directly behind the paver while preventing mix from sticking to the tires.” Steel drum rollers build density from the top down with successive roller passes, whereas pneumatic tire rollers build density ‘bottom up,’ making them very effective in the breakdown position. The kneading action of the rubber tires

also aids greatly in achieving a more uniform density throughout the depth of the asphalt layer. Lastly, there are finish rollers whose goal is to clean up marks left by previous rollers. Finish rollers may also achieve additional density gains, however, it should not be expected in most cases. Static steel wheel rollers are primarily used as finishing rollers because they produce the smoothest surface of any roller type.

Using Amplitude & Frequency Lack of roller operator training on using the optimal settings of amplitude and frequency on steel drum vibratory rollers and tire pressures on pneumatic rollers is a huge contributing factor to achieving density. According to Mansell, amplitude is the “hammer” that imparts compactive energy from the roller to the mat to achieve density. The thicker the mat, or the larger size stone in the mix, dictates using a higher amplitude setting. A general rule of thumb is to use a higher amplitude setting on lift thicknesses greater than 2-in. thick. Lower amplitude on 1-in. to 2-in. thick and static (no vibration) on lifts 1-in. or less in thickness. There are several other factors, such as the base conditions (soft versus stiff), mix temperature, binder type, etc. that also factor into deciding what amplitude setting to use. The most significant factor is the lift thickness. “Frequency should always be run at the highest frequency setting possible on the roller,” Mansell adds. “One thing to always remember on rollers that have multiple amplitude and frequency settings is that a high amplitude setting means a lower frequency setting on most rollers on the market today. Since frequency is directly related to how fast the roller can travel and maintain the recommended 10 -12 impacts per foot, it is CRITICAL that operators understand going to a lower frequency setting means they will need to slow down!”

4. COMMUNICATION Preparation, planning and training are key components of achieving optimal asphalt compaction, but they mean very little if none of the above factors are being communicated and implemented. “Proper communication is essential to achieving density,” Mansell says. “As noted above, if the root cause of not achieving density is related the paver moving too fast and the rollers having to keep up, the roller and paver operators MUST communicate to each other and figure out the correct paver speed that allows the rollers to keep up with the paver and maintain 10 – 12 impacts per foot. This is just one example.”

Keep in mind that rollers are the last piece of equipment to touch the mat after it is placed and are the last opportunity to “undo” the smooth mat that the paver has placed. Mansell says always have a “Plan B” if density is not being achieved and a means to communicate that to the rest of the crew. “Take pride in your work and work as a TEAM in order to accomplish a quality job that you can be proud of,” Mansell concludes.

TOP 10 Transporting equipment between jobsites requires attention to the detail

T

he major risk when transporting equipment occurs during the loading and unloading procedure. Following a few basic guidelines can help ensure safe equipment transport. We contacted Nathan Uphus, sales manager, Felling Trailers, to provide a list of the top 10 safety tips. They include: Read the trailer owner’s manual and decals. Familiarize yourself with the rated capacity of the trailer, which is posted on the VIN tag. Know what you’re hauling. Oftentimes, the weight of the equipment with additional attachments, etc., is miscalculated, which can easily cause the trailer to be overloaded. Know the tow rating of your vehicle, and ensure it is properly sized to handle the trailer and equipment you’ll be towing. Each vehicle manufacturer assigns a tow rating, which is the maximum weight of the tow vehicle when loaded.

Trailer Safety Tips

Ensure that your tow vehicle’s hitch rating meets or exceeds the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of the trailer you’re towing. This applies to the receiver hitch itself, as well as the ball mount and ball or pintle hitch assembly. Be aware of towing dynamics. Any time a trailer is added to the back of a vehicle — no matter the size — there is going to be a significant degradation in the vehicle’s performance, whether it’s acceleration, braking, handling or stability. Perform a walk around inspection to ensure that the trailer is within safe operating specifications. Inspect the frame for any cracking, check the tires for proper pressure and excessive wear, and inspect suspension components. Also inspect braking systems for proper brake adjustment, and ensure the emergency breakaway system is functioning properly. The hitch height is critical in ensuring that the trailer tows properly. As a rule, when on a flat, level loading surface, the trailer should be higher in the front than the rear, so that when the trailer is fully loaded, the truck and trailer are sitting level.

Ensure that the tow vehicle is properly sized to handle the trailer and equipment you’ll be towing. Each vehicle manufacturer assigns a tow rating, which is the maximum weight of the towed vehicle when loaded.

Do not exceed maximum allowed tongue transfer. A common example of tongue transfer is 10% to 15%. However, the percentage could differ depending on vehicle, hitch style, coupler rating, load, etc. Under-loaded or negative tongue weight is worse than excessive tongue weight, and could cause loss of control. Know your tie-down needs. Depending on the equipment being hauled, the size and quantity of tiedowns can differ. Lastly, and most important, keep up with regular maintenance, including hubs and bearings, brakes, suspension components, tires and electrical system. In equipment fleets, trailers are often overlooked; they cannot serve their purpose if they are not properly maintained.

JOBSITE INNOVATIONS Permanently mark all binders, chains, hooks and clevis pins with their capacity. One consideration is that ratchet binders have twice the strength of mechanical lever binders, and are much easier to tighten.

PROPERLY SECURE THE LOAD An important criterion for any equipment move is properly securing the equipment to the trailer. You need to have a working knowledge of proper tiedown techniques, as well as which chains and binders are most appropriate for the load being transported. Chain comes in various grades and thicknesses. The most commonly used chain for securing loads is Grade 70, 3/8 in., which has a 6,600-lb. maximum pull. For heavier loads, there is Grade 70, 1/2 in., with 11,300 lbs. maximum pull. The Federal Motor Carrier Administration’s Aggregate Working Load Limit uses equipment weight to identify the number of tie-downs needed, as well as their capacity. The basic requirement is that tie-downs must have a combined strength equal to at least 50% of the load being secured. For example, if you’re hauling a 20,000-lb. backhoe-loader, you need chains that can support a minimum of 10,000 lbs. A 3/8-in. Grade 70 chain has a rated capacity of 6,600 lbs. Because this would be divided by two according to the load limit calculation, you would need four 3/8-in. chains to properly secure the machine. If you’re hauling a 40,000-lb. excavator, you would need to either add more chains or upgrade to 1/2-in. chain for greater capacity. “Each piece of equipment requires a certain quantity of chains and binders. They must be rated accordingly,” says Uphus. “The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration offers information on proper load securement.” Here are some of the minimum requirements: • If the loaded vehicle has crawler tracks or wheels, at least four tie-downs need to be used to prevent movement side to side, forward, rearward and vertically.

Perform a walk around inspection to ensure that the trailer is within safe operating specifications. Inspect the frame for any cracking, check the tires for proper pressure and excessive wear, and inspect suspension components. Also, inspect braking systems for proper brake adjustment and ensure the emergency breakaway system is functioning properly.

• An indirect tie-down routed through an anchor point and attached to both sides of the trailer is counted as a single tie-down. • A chain can be used as two tie-downs if properly attached to two anchor points using two binders, with slack in the middle of the chain so that a break in the middle would not affect either tie-down. • The sum of the working load limits of the tie-downs must equal at least 50% of the weight of the cargo. If unsure of the cargo’s weight, additional tiedowns may be needed. Inspect chains before each use and remove any from service with cracked, stretched or fatigued links. Also make sure any tie-down points, binders, hooks and clevis pins meet capacity regulations. The tie-downs are only as strong as the lowest rated component. Permanently mark all binders, chains, hooks and clevis pins with their capacity. One consideration is that

ratchet binders have twice the strength of mechanical lever binders, and are much easier to tighten. Think about how you are tying the machine down. It is easy to damage equipment by routing chains in sensitive areas such as tie-rods or near hydraulic hoses. When securing the equipment, a chain angled at 45° between the equipment and deck provides the maximum working load. This angle provides a clamping load that prevents equipment from sliding, while also pulling the load down to the trailer. During transport, you should periodically pull over and check the load since chains and straps have a tendency to shift and stretch. Re-tighten them as necessary.

Therefore, a tack coat can significantly improve pavement strength, reduce surface-course sliding and reduce topdown cracking. However, if not done in a uniform way, that “glue” you’re putting down won’t develop into a proper bond. Here are three tips to help ensure you’re using, and getting the most out of, your asphalt distributor. The session will be held Thursday, March 8th at 7:30 a.m. during World of Asphalt in Indianapolis. 1. TRAINING As with any piece of equipment, having an operator that is properly trained is paramount to the success of the project. Not only do operators need to understand the machine they are working with in terms of proper nozzle selection, distributor speed and maintenance, they also need to know how the product they are putting down impacts the performance of the machine and the end-result of the job. “Distributors in today's world are computer controlled to apply the selected application rate regardless of speed of the truck and spray width (within reason),” Brian Horner, region manager at E.D. Etnyre says. “So the main issue we see on jobs with distributors is that operators do not fully understand the products that are being

applied and how to handle them. These products have changed a lot in the past few years and need to be handled differently than in the past.” Horner says the temperature requirements of the materials will depend on the product being used. “Product temp is very important to getting the material to circulate and spray properly,” he says. “And since the proper temperature range can vary from 150° F to 400° F, it’s important for operators to know what temperature the material needs to be at and keep an eye on it on the machine. “Distributors have two thermometers to check temperature, one in the belly or low point that displays in the cab and rear control boxes, and another one on the side of the tank. All distributors have a heating system either LPG or diesel fired. Optional electric belly heat is also a great idea if you are keeping material in the tank for extended periods of time.” 2. MAINTENANCE Like any machine, asphalt distributors need to stay well maintained and checked regularly for calibration in order to work properly. Horner says these are simple tests on the job site to assure application rate is correct (ex: measuring stick, measured shots, longitude tests or weight tests). Having a clean machine is also key to proper machine performance. “A clean distributor is a happy distributor,” Horner says. “Cleaning distributors is

a process that needs daily attention. Over spray can build up on the bar and valves which will affect the working components of the unit. Many customers are now dry ice blasting their machines to clean them which basically is sand blasting the machine but with dry ice. This freezes the asphalt and causes it to flake off which results in no damage to wires or hoses.” Proper nozzle alignment is another part of machine maintenance and performance. “Nozzles are made of brass and tack is a petroleum-based product so they will spray millions of gallons before replacement is needed,” Horner says, but they need to be properly aligned to ensure uniform application. “Nozzles are aligned in the bar at a 30° angle to achieve triple overlap application and this must be maintained to get the correct coverage of the product,” he adds. 3. SAFETY Asphalt distributors can be potentially dangerous as they are made to heat up and disperse materials up to 400° F. This is why keeping safety top of mind is an important best practice when working with these machines. “Safety if a huge concern around a distributor,” Horner says. “Operators and personnel around the unit should be familiar with the product being sprayed and what to do if the product is spilled or you get some on your skin. The hotter the product, the more danger there is.” Horner says the other main safety issue is understanding how a distributor needs to be cleaned out or flushed if different products are going to be used in the unit. “Safe operation of the burners to heat the product, temperature you are trying to achieve, amount of material in the tank so you can safely heat and the fuels being used for heating the machine all need to be communicated in order to ensure safe operation,” Horner concludes.

Developing a Workforce for the

ASPHALT INDUSTRY Attracting new talent will require some change

A recent survey found that 75% of new hires in the asphalt industry come from current employee referrals. Start there when looking for reliable workers.

C

onstruction firms across the country expect to step up hiring significantly in 2019 to meet a growing demand for the industry. According to the Associated General Contractors of America, 79% of firms expected their headcount to increase by at least 50% in the coming year with half anticipating to hire between 11 and 25 employees. But there's a problem — the growing labor shortage that has plagued the construction industry for years. We have been working hard as an industry to track down and hire new talent, but that isn’t enough. “Finding and keeping talent is nationwide problem,” Kevin Reester with Reester & Associates says. “Workforce management, development and attraction will always be a moving target. The best of class companies understand this and treat this as a strategic long term business initiative versus just filling their workforce for the next season or two.” Reester will be speaking on Thursday February 14th at World of Asphalt on ways to find “The New Workforce” for the industry. If you can’t make the show, we share some of his insight below. ATTRACTING & KEEPING TALENT In order to attract talent to the asphalt industry from a dwindling labor pool,

you have to first know where to look. A recent survey by Reester & Associates for the asphalt industry showed that 75% of new hires were coming from current employee referrals. Reester says this is the number one place to start when you’re looking for reliable workers. “We work in a hard, seemingly unattractive industry until people get their foot in the door, then they love it,” Reester says. “Take care of who you have and they will bring you other talented people.” In order to do this, 59% of construction related firms surveyed across the country report boosting base pay and 29% gave bonuses or provided other incentives and 24% sweetened employee benefits. Reester adds that we need to invest in reaching new areas never touched for potential recruitment and also develop programs to provide education and development for those who are completely new to the business. “Very often people may have never considered a job in the industry and we need to find those people and have a plan to train, support and bring them in,” he says. “As an industry this has never been asphalt’s strong suit compared to other trade related programs with apprenticeship and vocational programs (i.e. carpenters, pipe fitters, etc). The industry as a whole has been behind the curve when it comes to diversification of compensation and benefits that we see in other parallel industries and people are leaving the asphalt side to catch up,” he says. ADDING VALUE CREATES LOYALTY For the last decade we’ve had a lot of talk about what Millennial employees want in a workplace – good compensation,

participation in decision making, flexibility in hours, work/life balance and good managers and feedback. In reality, everything on that list is what great employees want regardless of generation. Creating a workplace where people feel valued and respected just makes good sense and many of those things mentioned above are easy to fix. Still, Reester says one major underlying theme they see in almost every industry is that employees want to know that the work they do means something, not just to the bottom line, but to the community and world as a whole. What could be more meaningful than building the roads their community uses every day? “The asphalt industry keeps America’s economy moving every day, it makes the backbone of every community a great place to live – when you have terrible roads people translate that into a bad place to live,” Reester says. “The best firms are harnessing this and have a clear vision that goes beyond making money and sharing that with everyone in the firm.“ Reester says this is something that has grown exponentially since Millennials entered the workforce in large numbers. Taking this a step further means making time to support and participate in community service as a company, asking employees what they care about and how that relates to what they do every day. “Best of class firms will have this nailed and continue to evolve leading to greater employee satisfaction and retention,” he concludes.
