TECHNOLOGY MATTERS |

App Creates Construction Community and Seeks to Solve Labor Shortage

C

onstruction workers are a unique collection of individuals with a very special set of skills. Because of this, traditional platforms for interacting with peers or seeking employment haven’t always been a good fit. They aren’t as conducive to how many of those working in the industry like to interact or to the highly visual nature of the work they perform. So, up to this point, the industry has remained largely disconnected. “There’s this huge demographic of hardworking folks in this country and beyond who simply don’t have a professional platform the way most other folks do,” says Peter Maglathlin, CFO, Trade Hounds. “The way that manifests itself as a problem is: If they don’t have a professional identity online, they can’t be discovered. Therefore, the labor market in construction is hugely inefficient.” Trade Hounds seeks to change that. The platform is the brainchild of David Broomhead, CEO, who grew up in a family of tradespeople in Australia before moving to the U.S. He saw firsthand that those working in construction were a unique group with a different culture, language and communication habits, who needed a dedicated platform to serve them professiownally. Maglathlin was already a veteran of a successful startup when he joined Broomhead and Jon Clark, CTO, to found Trade Hounds, a platform targeted to commercial tradespeople. “I was really compelled by the opportunity,” he says, “not only from a commercial perspective, but also the opportunity to really improve the lives of millions of people across the country who are highly skilled, really hard working,

10

big contributors to the economy, but [who] weren’t offered the same sort of technology applications others were.” CREATING A COMMUNITY The trio of founders aligned around the need to improve the efficiency of the construction labor market. But they didn’t want to create another job board that workers engage with infrequently. “We wanted to create a communitybased product that workers inherently want to use on a habitual basis that will accrue value to them over the course of their entire career,” Maglathlin states. “[You] don’t just use it when you’re looking for a job, but use it intermittently over the course of your career to connect and showcase your work, etc.” To deliver this, the founders knew the platform had to be accessible via a mobile device due to the on-site nature of the workforce and work, and that it had to be video and image focused. “When you think about construction workers, they’re far more visual,” says Maglathlin. “It’s far more compelling for a carpenter, welder, plumber to showcase their skill sets through video and imagery.” The platform also needed to be specific to the construction workforce. “We felt everything from the branding to the functionality really needed to speak to the specific type of worker,” says Maglathlin. Since the Trade Hounds mobile app launched in 2019, it has grown to nearly 200,000 users. “The response from the worker market has exceeded our expections,” says Maglathlin. “There’s clearly latent demand for something like this.” Thus far, the most common

application for the app is to showcase work on projects. “Many of the skilled tradespeople across the country are proud of what they do, but they’ve never been given the appropriate forum through which to showcase it,” Maglathlin points out. “When you think about how they use Facebook or Instagram, those are primarily social platforms. Their networks are vast. “On Trade Hounds, you have workers across the country showcasing the work that they’re most proud of, seeking advice, getting feedback and, importantly, connecting with each other.” A PROFESSIONAL INVESTMENT The value proposition for Trade Hounds up to this point has been in providing a place for users to showcase their work, make connections and develop a professional identity. “What’s really exciting is we’re now moving into a world where workers can

source jobs in the platform, which was always the original vision,” Maglathlin says. “We wanted to provide them a safe space where they belonged, but also provide them the opportunity to showcase their work with a purpose to find that next job — to find a better paying job.” To further this, Trade Hounds raised $3.2 million in a seed funding round led by seed-stage venture capital firms Alpaca VC and Brick and Mortar Ventures, both of which have experience investing in construction technology startups. “For the first time ever, really, you have venture capital firms and you have deep pockets really interested in innovation that's happening in construction,” Maglathlin comments. Also among the investors was Suffolk Technology, an internal venture capital arm established by Boston-based Suffolk Construction to invest in innovative technology startups that can help propel the construction industry forward. “Part of why we’re very interested in Trade Hounds is because there’s a massive labor shortage in the industry for both skilled and unskilled labor,” says Raja Ghawi, investment associate, Suffolk Technology. “We spoke to our teammates who do recruiting and manage workers on site, and we heard some very painful stories.” But Suffolk Technology didn’t just invest in Trade Hounds. It is also helping it in its next stage of development by opening up the company’s jobsites and allowing Trade Hounds’ founders to interact with workers and extend The app provides invitations to join a visual platform the app. for workers to share and be

JOB BOARD recognized for AND BEYOND their work. Trade Hounds has Photo Credit: Trade since begun closed Hounds beta testing of its job board. Several employers are now actively engaging with workers and hiring them using the platform. “It’s really a natural extension of the platform because it’s so professional in nature and all the content and

Shining a Light on Construction’s Opportunities There has been a shift away from younger workers entering the construction workforce. But Peter Maglathlin sees an opportunity for tools like Trade Hounds to help in rebuilding the industry’s “brand.” “I’m starting to hear some of the right things around kind of a rebranding of the industry, the right rhetoric, and also the right amount of visibility into how rewarding, both financially and non-financially, a career in construction can be,” he states. “When you go to a trade school, you emerge with no debt, you have phenomenal career opportunities, and it’s also a very entrepreneurial type of industry where you have so many people standing up and running their own businesses, which is obviously very rewarding. “We like to think that by introducing a worker-dedicated technology that is shining a light on the phenomenal work these people are doing, we can play a small part in kind of improving the brand of the industry, if you will,” he adds. “And I like to think that all the innovation that’s happening is going to contribute in some small way. It seems like the tide is turning a bit, but it’s going to be many years before we reach what anyone would deem a successful outcome.” conversation on there is about work,” says Maglathlin. “Our thesis is that if you capture the worker, if you bring all of them together, then that’s really how you win because they’re the scarce asset. “Not making it transactional from the beginning I think allowed us to scale up the worker side of the platform and make it feel like it was their own user-generated content, really authentic,” he adds. Thus far, the results from the beta testing have been very encouraging, and there are plans to continue to grow the organization and eventually roll the job board out to different markets

across the U.S. “We’re very excited about how we can help them succeed in those local markets, especially ones we operate in,” says Ghawi. “Looking even beyond that, I think the opportunities are endless for Trade Hounds,” he continues. “You have a database of all the workers they’re managing, basically proof of work, the quality of their labor — why not help them manage their training certificates, their affiliations? If you have all that data, maybe you can help them with onboarding. The list goes on and on.” Maglathlin agrees. "There's so much opportunity above and beyond jobs when you think about it. We're approached by brands in the industry all the time because they want access to these types of people when they're thinking about work. What better time to start to sell a person a drill, or a truck or even a deal on coffee than when they're on the jobsite looking at Trade Hounds?," he asks. "And so, again, it's all about building out the community, making sure that experience is great and then layering in other stakeholders in a way that hopefully adds value to the workers' lives."

ggregates are often overlooked when we talk about the construction industry today. They are not appealing. They are not glamorous. They are just rocks after all. That said, aggregates are – quite literally – the building blocks of our society. Aggregate production dates back to the Roman Empire, and it has been critical to the growth of our world ever since.

Aggregates are the most basic material used in construction. They provide the foundation for roads, bridges and buildings, while also making up over 90% of an asphalt pavement and up to 80% of a concrete mix. On average, 38,000 tons of aggregates are necessary to construct one lane mile of interstate highway. Construction of the average home requires 400 tons of aggregate, while the average size school or hospital requires 15,000 tons.

Every state and roughly three-quarters of the nation’s counties are home to an aggregate operation, producing nearly 2.4 billion tons of material annually, valued at over $25 billion. That’s a huge impact for some rocks. WHAT ARE AGGREGATES? Aggregates are raw materials that are produced from natural sources and extracted from pits and quarries, including gravel, crushed stone and sand. When used with a binding medium, like water, cement and asphalt, they are used to form compound materials, such as asphalt concrete and Portland cement concrete. According to a 2018 report by the U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Commodity Summary, 75% of the 1.4 billion tons of crushed stone produced was used in construction. Meanwhile, of the almost 1 billion tons of sand and gravel produced, 24% was used in road construction, 12% in asphalt and 44% in concrete.

16

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR NOVEMBER 2020

ACON1120_14-17_SpecialReport_J.indd 16

WHY ARE AGGREGATES IMPORTANT? Not only are aggregates the building blocks of our society, they are also prevalent in our daily lives. The average American requires roughly 10,000 tons of aggregate per year. We would not have glass and plastic without sand, or pennies without zinc. Quartz gives us the silica for computer parts, limestone gives us the calcium carbonate for antacids. Aggregates are also used in the water filtration and purification process, as well as air filtration and purification. WHAT MAKES AN AGGREGATE A GOOD AGGREGATE? Aggregates must have predictable, uniform and consistent materials properties. They must be dry and clean before they can be used. Aggregates are only as good as their processing. They are mined, crushed, washed and separated. The successful outcome of each step, the processing of a good

aggregate, depends on the success of the previous step. That success depends on the hardworking men and women in the aggregates industry, men and women who often go overlooked and underappreciated in the construction industry. Aggregates are here to stay. Today’s machines are high performance, low maintenance and energy efficient machines. They allow the men and women in the aggregates industry to work quickly and safely while producing high quality materials. Sara Fueling is director of construction at the Association of Equipment Manufacturers (AEM)

HAYDON MATE Takes Aerial Control of Inventory Management

F

or over 60 years, the Haydon family of companies has been involved in the extraction and distribution of bituminous asphalt production and limestone. Success of the operation is highly dependent on effective stockpile management—one of the critical steps to quality aggregate production. Like other material companies, Haydon Materials has looked to thirdparty surveyors to manage and measure

stockpiles. With four quarries, the job is a big one that requires continual knowledge and awareness of foundation patterns and distribution processes. JB Haydon, asset and procurement manager, for Haydon Materials, explained, “A third-party surveyor doesn’t know your operation or the layout of your stockpiles nearly as well as you do. For instance, we know from experience that our stockpile planes are not flat, but an outside surveyor won’t

know that, creating more work for us when the survey is complete. We wanted a way to conduct surveys on our own.” FLYOVER FIRSTS In January 2019, Haydon tried the Trimble Stratus with Propeller PPK platform along with Propeller AeroPoints for high-precision ground control for stockpile management. As a starting point, Haydon began flying the sensorenabled drone once a month to gather

stock quantities at each of the four quarries. With AeroPoints on the ground, the team has a consistent and reliable stock survey every time, eliminating any issues with even or uneven bases. These smart, solar powered, ground control points with built in GNSS antenna record raw data, which when uploaded to Stratus, are post processed to provide a high-accuracy position. “It’s a very easy process,” confirmed

Haydon. “I fly the stockpiles and upload for processing. Once I get the data back, usually within a day, I’m ready to measure and compare.” BEYOND THE VOLUMES With the data in hand, Haydon uses the Trimble Stratus monthly and bimonthly to determine current stockpile volumes and a range of other tasks. Once he has the stock inventory data formatted, Haydon sends the data to

the accounting department to prepare monthly reports. “They can put in production and take out sales,” he said. “That’s huge. The technology helps us keep a tight and accurate end-of-month inventory reconciliation and reporting. Through this process, we actually started picking up some tons that had been wiped off the board.” While used primarily for end-ofmonth stockpile management tasks, Trimble Stratus also helps Haydon and his team to track, map and measure quarry volumes, check water levels and perform pre- and post-stripping surveys. Haydon uses the technology to measure and compare cross-sections on active quarries over time. “We use the software to check if we’ve improved a road or if we want to draw a quick line across a stockpile to see how it’s changed,” said Haydon. The comparison tool is also valuable if Haydon wants to perform quick volume calculations of material moved for progress payments and proof-of-site changes and compare historical data with current measurements. Typically, Haydon will fly an area before and after a contractor moves overburden. The drone and Trimble Stratus combination lets them measure

Customer Profile: Headquartered in Bardstown, KY, Haydon Materials, LLC and its Affiliates is a family-owned aggregates and paving operations company with a long history in the materials business. The company specializes in bituminous asphalt production and lay down, along with crushed limestone. Currently, the company owns and operates four limestone quarries, two asphalt plants and one stone distribution yard. Business Challenge Annual and bi-annual third-party surveys of stockpile estimates weren’t providing the necessary level of detail to prepare quarry end-of-month reports and complete other inventory management tasks to optimize quarry operations. Solution Deploy drones and a streamlined cloudbased data management process with: • Trimble Stratus • Propeller PPK • Propeller AeroPoints high-precision ground control Benefits • Cuts in-field surveying time in half • Improved mine and quarry planning • More control over end-of-month reporting and scheduling • Productive plant operations

exactly how many yards of material were moved. “Sometimes we’ll compare if they’re using a different software. So far, everything has lined up together, even with different software, so it’s proven the system is accurate,” he said. SAFETY-ENABLED PLANNING One unexpected benefit of the droneenabled survey platform is on site safety. “When you’re doing your survey, you’re getting a really great view of your site, so you can see potential hazards and flag them before they even happen,” said Haydon. For instance, a few years ago, Haydon Materials’ site experienced a lot of rain, with one particular site sitting on considerable overburden. After flying the quarry, “we could see a crack forming in the pile from all the water. This area had potential to give out and fall away. This was a major safety concern and was fixed right away.” By being able to spot this issue, Haydon was able to mitigate it before it became a problem. Alongside safety, the company can use the data from Trimble Stratus to improve plant efficiency. “We fly two new plant sites monthly because we’re still learning how many tons for each product that these sites are producing. With current data, we can continually improve efficiency and productivity,” said Haydon.

The visuals captured in a drone flyover aid mine and quarry planning too. Haydon Materials established the Airport Road Quarry in 2019, which is built to produce one million tons per year. “In this case, we’re able to fly an entire site, put a layout on it, and show our operations managers how to approach the mine and which direction to go,” he explained. “This is better than looking at your site in Google Earth because it’s up-to-date. Mine conditions change daily and Google Earth is only updated every few years. If you’re going to do a mine plan, I don’t know how you would effectively do it in today’s times without doing an aerial survey with a drone.” When asked about the value of the technology solution, Haydon concluded, “The system paid for itself in the first year with stockpile management—it’s a lot less expensive than a third-party surveyor and the data is more accurate. Everything else is a bonus.”

In order to achieve this moving forward, there needs to be a nationwide focus on innovation in pavement design and construction. “States right now only have so many dollars for road repairs and they have to stretch those dollars as far as they can,” Ben Worel, operations engineer at the

MnROAD pavement test track says. “One way of doing this is through innovation and the creation of industry partnerships to push the industry forward. And states need to do that because there’s too much work to do and not enough money to do it if we keep doing things the same way we’ve always done them.”

To accomplish this, many government agencies are starting to experiment with new techniques on their construction projects. Contractors working on these jobs know there’s no shortage of opportunities to push their company and crew to try something new, whether they like it or not. While this can initially present challenges for your construction business, it also creates opportunities. “Innovation in general allows the agency, along with the contractor, to really challenge the status quo out there in pavement design and really drive continuous improvement in our industry to advance the performance of our pavements,” Justin Black, global category leader, road building, at Cargill says. “With the low bid market contractors face today, innovative materials and practices allow contractors to find unique ways to lower costs, to be positioned as

an industry leader and ultimately better compete in this kind of environment.” Finding a way to stretch your dollars and improve pavement performance is what innovation is all about and contractors should start taking ownership of introducing these new products and practices to the asphalt paving industry. WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR INNOVATION? It’s no secret that paving contractors are averse to change. As agencies begin to require new technologies or use of a different mix design than contractors are used to, you’re likely to hear grumbles from the crew.

Innovation allows the industry to challenge the status quo in pavement design and drive continuous improvement which will hopefully advance the performance of our roadways.

PRODUCTION NOTES “Innovation does come with risk,” Worel says. “States typically have very prescriptive language on how to build things and adding innovation on top of that which requires new materials and testing of those materials adds a risk for the contractor. Many times they aren’t willing to bid on these projects if they think these new innovations will jeopardize their normal production, density or bonus incentives.” Once properly trained and acclimated to the materials however, contractors recognize the benefits of these innovations and are happy to implement changes that make their jobs easier while also enabling them to achieve a higher quality result. “When contractors don't have a good handle on something new, like a new mix design, they tend to be risk averse and are reluctant to implement or try to bid on projects utilizing that technology,” Black adds. “But bringing those

“Once properly trained and acclimated to new processes and materials, contractors recognize the benefits and are happy to implement these innovations.” ideas to the table first, before they are mandated, is what will set them apart from other bidders.” Worel with MnROAD agrees. “We created the MnROAD test track not only to move road design and innovation forward, but also to help create open partnerships working together on common goals,” he says. “These projects allow contractors to construct innovative pavements in an environment where a true partnership understands both failures and successes and the sections performance is documented and shared with a wider audience compared to a normal project that has limited

participation. Having an open communication/partnership working towards common goals also helps lessen the risk for manufacturers and contractors who want to get involved.” This means contractors need to be proactive in seeking out innovation for their projects and that starts with research and ultimately choosing the right people to partner with. “Change is tough but it’s important for contractors to understand there is a risk and a reward for these projects.” Black continues. “If you are the one going to the agency with a new proposal or idea for their project, then you’re one step ahead of everyone else.” FIND THE RIGHT PARTNER FOR EVERY JOB The construction industry is full of people who are working hard to make our roads last longer and perform better for less money. Turn to these suppliers and manufacturers to help your company gain an advantage and to help you understand any risk you may be worried about. The National Center for Asphalt Technology and the National Road Research Alliance (NRRA) are two partners that can help contractors educate themselves on the innovations that may be coming down the pipeline for our industry and help foster partnerships with the right people. “The NRRA was designed to foster innovation and to help develop implementable products for road owners,” Worel says. “Our research partnership expands across ten agency Contractors are not alone in pursuing new mix ideas or innovative construction practices. Industry groups and manufacturers are resources available to help.

members and approximately 60 associate members made up of academia, contractors, consultants, materials suppliers and associations. This ensures high quality, relevant research that is based on the latest technology.” To advance pavement innovation further, the NRRA recently put out a call of innovation where suppliers and manufacturers alike could present their ideas and potentially receive research funding. Five projects were awarded funding to address industry needs. “What this does is creates a streamlined process for agencies, suppliers and contractors to form partnerships around innovation instead of innovation being forced upon either party,” Worel adds. “Not only does this push innovation in the industry, it also means the industry is going to receive proven products or techniques that extend pavement life.” Contractors who choose to partner on these projects should also proactively work with both the agency and the supplier to continue moving that innovation forward. That might be having pre-bid or pre-construction meetings to define and understand the technology and its benefits, define who is responsible for what on the project and to also ensure it’s the right partnership for the project. “By working with your supplier and the agency up front to push innovation forward, it gives contractors

32

ASPHALT CONTRACTOR NOVEMBER 2020

ACON1120_26-33_ProductionInnovate_J.indd 32

the opportunity to optimize their raw materials and optimize their designs and selection,” Black says. “If they can do that, then they are able to provide the most cost effective and high performing pavement, which will benefit both the agency and the traveling public.”

Contractors need to think more long term when it comes to being innovative. Avoiding projects because of new materials or specs will only put you behind your competition in the future.

DON’T BE LEFT BEHIND Working with a new technology or mix design might not be on your radar today, but maybe it should be. Contractors who are continually pushing the industry forward through innovation and new construction practices will only see benefits to their business in the future. This means contractors need to think more long term than short term when it comes to being innovative. If contractors are avoiding these types of projects long term, they're not going to fully understand the technology to be able to capitalize on new projects, meaning they may not be positioned well for future growth. If contractors start gaining knowledge of these technologies now however, when specifications inevitably change within a given agency, whether it be a state, county or city, contractors are then better positioned to execute and capture those dollars. "We all can get caught up in the short-term needs of our business, but we should look at innovation with a longterm view," Black adds.

Above all else, asphalt contractors need to be open and ready for change so that our industry continues to be seen as a leader in road design and construction. “We need to push for innovation and challenge the status quo to continuously improve our practices,” Black adds. “This will extend the performance of our pavements and so we make sure we’re building longer lasting, more sustainable roads. Not only that, we need to continue to innovate and push the performance criteria to position asphalt as the preferred pavement of choice by agencies.” Change is going to happen. There are challenges within our industry that need to be fixed and we need to push for innovation in our specifications to move the industry forward and contractors need to be ready for that. Why not start today?

OSCILLATING ROLLERS

Well-Suited for Thin Asphalt Lifts Thin lift pavements and abrasive aggregates are tough on rollers but oscillation technology, coupled with hard steel, make these rollers ideal for this application

used in vibration-sensitive areas. Oscillation is also beneficial when joining existing and newly laid asphalt layers. The lack of vertical movement with oscillation reduces the risk of over-compacting and damage to the aggregate. Oscillating compaction is also quieter and more comfortable for the driver.

R

HOW IT WORKS Oscillating compaction of asphalt is usually performed with rollers featuring twin drums, one with vibration and one with oscillation. The drums can be activated individually, and the oscillating drum is commonly placed at the rear. In the oscillating drum, two rotating eccentric weights are placed away from the drum center to generate the backand-forth oscillating motion of the drum as it moves across the surface. This means that, as opposed to the vibration system, the drum does not move its axis of rotation, but rather oscillates around it.

ollers with an oscillating drum have proven their worth in a number of compacting applications. They are particularly well suited for compacting asphalt when vibration should be minimized, for instance on thin asphalt lifts, bridge decks, near building foundations and concrete structures. THE BENEFITS OF OSCILLATION An oscillating roller mainly exerts horizontal forces on the asphalt layer, together with the static load from the machine itself. The roller is always in contact with the surface and the horizontal movement ‘massages’ the surface. This leads to efficient compacting with very little vibration transmitted to the surrounding environment. This more gentle compaction allows the roller to be

COUNTERACTING TOUGHER WEAR WITH TOUGHER STEEL The trend towards thinner asphalt layers and harder aggregates favors the use of oscillating rollers. Oscillating avoids the

drawbacks of vibration which is often too severe for the thinner layers that are becoming more common. The horizontal oscillating movement although creates a grinding effect on the drum’s surface. The active life of a roller is often more than 10,000 hours. To avoid the need for a drum replacement because of excessive wear during this time, the usual solution is to use a thick drum made of mild steel such as S355 (A36). However, some manufacturera have decided to take their design in a different direction. SEARCHING AND FINDING THE SOLUTION Dynapac wanted to use a relatively thin steel to make the drum light. There is no advantage of having a thick and heavy drum, quite the opposite. With a lighter drum, it’s possible to reduce the size of the mechanical components that rotate the drum and create the oscillations. This in turn reduces the

fuel consumption of the roller, to the benefit of the operator. When Dynapac’s design and production team looked for a working solution, they targeted a 6.630-in. thickness for the drum. To ensure the service life was long enough, they also needed a hard steel that was able to cope with the particular wear challenge seen on an oscillating drum. Plus, they needed to be sure it could be bent into a perfectly round shape without having to invest in new rolling equipment. The abrasion-resistant steel Hardox wear plate from SSAB promised to deliver on all accounts. After consulting with material and production specialists at SSAB’s Knowledge Service Center and testing different grades of Hardox wear steel, Dynapac concluded that Hardox 450 had the optimum mix of hardness for wear resistance and ductility for workshop performance. The proper welding process was worked out together with SSAB. “In this project we have worked very closely with SSAB‘s wear and manufacturing experts. We used their knowledge to establish the best way to bend and weld the drums,” Andreas Lager, manager for structural analysis and design at Dynapac say. “This cooperation has been very valuable when developing our new oscillating rollers.” When the production techniques were in place, a couple of full scale prototypes were constructed and put into action in regular field tests. “Our prototype rollers were monitored for up to 1,000 hours of tough operation and the oscillating drums showed hardly any wear at all. It was really satisfying to see that the grooves from the turning of the drums were still clearly visible on the drum surface,” Lager says.

PERFECT FOR SPEED & HIGH PRODUCTIVITY A large number of Dynapac’s oscillating rollers in the CO series are now in full operation around the world. Some of the machines have been involved in a prestigious project in Asia, ensuring a perfect surface on the new Formula 1 race track in Hanoi, which will be ready for racing in 2020. “A Dynapac roller normally requires extremely little maintenance. The timing belts inside the oscillating drum are however something that might need to be replaced during the machine’s lifetime. This is the case on

all oscillating drums due to how they are constructed. Therefore we have put a lot of effort into making the change as simple and fast as possible. A belt swap on both sides in a Dynapac CO roller can be done in as little as two hours, thanks to a smart design and easy access through large manholes on each side of the drum,” Lager concludes.

For more information on oscillation, visit ForConstructionPros. com/21013583

Use of

PLASTIC ADDITIVES

in Asphalt Mixtures Increasing Dow Chemicals have installed their recycled plastic-modified asphalt mixtures on several roads and parking lots in the country, proving these mixtures to be a viable option in sustainable pavement design and construction

T

he use of recycled materials in asphalt has been an ongoing topic of conversation in our industry. On the one hand, recycled materials can benefit both our roadways and the environment if done correctly and with the proper research. On the other hand, the push to implement materials before thorough research is conducted is never advised. In late 2018, media reports and social networks began generating an interest in the possibility of using recycled plastic waste in asphalt mixtures. The idea was marketed as an opportunity to simultaneously improve the quality of asphalt pavements and help address the issue of waste plastic in cities and towns across the U.S. Dow Chemical has been the champion of using recycled plastics in asphalt pavements and have worked to install their product in several parking lots and roadways around the country. We

60

talked with C.J. DuBois, asphalt paving application development leader at Dow Chemical to learn more. QUESTION: Where did the idea to use plastics in asphalt come from? How did researchers know these materials would perform in asphalt mixtures? ANSWER: Dow is committed to creating demand for recycled materials by diversifying markets and applications that will contribute to a global circular economy for plastics. That includes creating new technologies and initiatives that can transform used plastics into functional and valuable solutions. Asphalt is a sustainability success story as recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled tire rubber are commonly used materials today. One of Dow’s 2030 Sustainability Goals is Advancing a Circular Economy. This project is a great example of how Dow uses its technology and innovations to develop end markets, like recycled plastic modified asphalt (RPMA) for paving. Dow has asphalt binder labs in Texas and the Czech Republic. Additionally, Dow has partnered with key industry influencers, such as NCAT and NAPA, to demonstrate that these materials could meet current Performance Grade (PG) specifications. How long has Dow been introducing plastics in to asphalt mixtures? Before our projects in the U.S., we began in Depok City, Indonesia, in 2017, when we partnered with the Indonesian government to help further

Q A

its goal of reducing plastic waste in the ocean by 70% by 2025. In early 2019, we completed our first U.S. pilot project of two RPMA roads at Dow’s Freeport, TX site, incorporating 1,686 pounds of used plastic — the equivalent weight of 120,000 plastic grocery bags. Additional projects have taken place in Texas and Michigan. Dow has now incorporated recycled plastic into over 150 km of roads and parking lots around the world in Europe, Latin America, North America and Asia Pacific. Before Dow began pilot projects that incorporate recycled plastic into asphalt roads, ELVALOY™ Reactive Elastomeric Terpolymer (RET) has been enhancing polymer modified asphalt (PMA) for over 30 years to improve the performance of asphalt roads. That’s more than three decades of performance, long service life and lower life cycle costs. Why is using this product in roads beneficial? How many tons of materials can be recycled this way? Third-party research shows that PMA roads are more durable than unmodified asphalt roads. Based upon accelerated lab testing, the use of recycled plastic alongside an elastomeric compatibilizer such as RET is expected to reduce life cycle cost, reduce resurfacing frequency (which can lead to less traffic interruption), increase safety for construction workers and the public, reduce energy consumption, and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

CARGILL IS COMMITTED TO HELPING THE WORLD I

n 2014, the Janesville City Council committed to a new strategy to rehabilitate more miles per year. Part of this strategy is adjusting the mix designs for the pavements and “increasing the use of recycled materials in the asphalt,” said Lisa Wolf, assis¬tant city engineer for Janesville. The revised specifications increase the use of RAS, RAP and FRAP, and still meet standards for DCT, HWT and I-FIT performance testing. Janesville’s specs now allow for RAP, FRAP and RAS in both layers. “Up to 30% ABR in lower layer pavements and up to 55% ABR are allowed in surface layers where FRAP is required and RAS optional,” said Wolf. “With those elevated recycled levels we are using Cargill’s Anova 1815 Rejuvenator. It has helped with all the performance testing we have to meet.”

The city of Janesville has started reaping the benefits. Performance testing specifications ensure the high recycle mixes are resistant to cracking and rutting. In addition, after increasing its use of recycled asphalt material, Janesville saw the price per ton for a typical asphalt mix drop about 6% from the 2015 price. “There are real cost savings in utilizing more recycled asphalt material,” said Wolf.

THRIVE

Cargill Anova Rejuvenator allows increasing the usage of recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) to nearly 100%. Our unique chemistries not only reverse the impact of aging on pavement to help maintain and build better roads, but provide a more sustainable, economically beneficial advantage that is easy to implement. PRESERVATION UPDATE

Dow continues to monitor field sections containing recycled plastic to demonstrate use in roads is beneficial. What is the learning curve to using these mixes from a contractor perspective? Does the mix cool faster? Is it harder to compact? Or are the mix qualities similar to a hot mix asphalt? Our experience with RPMA has taught us that the handling of mixes is similar to traditional polymer modified products. The mixes cool at the same rate and have similar compacting experiences. On the Michigan paving projects, paving contractor Central Asphalt noted that the binder was a little heavier than they typically use on a parking lot and the PG 64-28 produces a little stiffer mix than they would typically use on a parking lot. The team indicated there was a little bit less time for handwork and for rolling to achieve the density they needed. However, the paving team was easily able to achieve the density without too much trouble since they were aware of the differences in advance and the rest of the paving was business as usual. How will asphalt mix producers need to modify their production process to accommodate these materials? We do not expect any modification of production processes. PMA suppliers can expect faster processing time, lower temperature requirements, reduced H2S emissions, less odor and no separation issues. In fact, we’ve received feedback from partners who use ELVALOY™ RET in their asphalt mix that they’re happy with the ease of processing and have not had to make any special changes to the process. Again for the Michigan projects, K-Tech Specialty Coatings Inc., Ashley, IN, was used to blend the plastic into a PG 64-28 binder. K-Tech then delivered the liquid already blended to Central Asphalt. The binder was stored on site for 20 days with no problem and the producer

Q

Projects Dow has supported in the U.S. have paved eight roads (over seven lane miles) with these materials and over 30,000 square yards of parking lots. In addition to the two roads at Dow’s Freeport facility, Dow used ELVALOY™ RET to enable RPMA to pave four public roads and two parking lots in the Great Lakes Bay Region in Michigan. The Michigan RPMA project includes: • Waskevich Lane in Larkin Township, covering two lane miles and incorporating more than 1,600 pounds of recycled plastic, which is equivalent in weight to more than 114,000 plastic grocery bags. • Mid-Bay County Line Road in Larkin Township, covering two lane miles and incorporating more than 1,600 pounds of recycled plastic, which is equivalent in weight to more than 114,000 plastic grocery bags. • Julie Ann Drive in Larkin Township, covering one lane mile and incorporating more than 800 pounds of recycled plastic, which is equivalent in weight to more than 57,000 plastic grocery bags. • Badour Road in Bullock Creek, covering one lane mile and incorporating more than 400 pounds of recycled plastic, which is equivalent in weight to more than 28,500 plastic grocery bags. • The Global Dow Center parking lot, covering 16,000 square yards and incorporating more than 2,300 pounds of recycled plastic, which is equivalent in weight to more than 164,000 plastic grocery bags. • The Saginaw Valley State University parking lot, covering 14,500 square yards and incorporating more than 4,100 pounds of recycled plastic, which is equivalent in weight to more than 292,000 plastic grocery bags. In total, over 10,400 pounds of recycled plastic were incorporated in these Michigan roads and parking lots, which is equivalent in weight to more than 769,500 plastic grocery bags. The total amount of recycled plastic used in the Texas and Michigan projects comes to 12,086 pounds, which is equivalent in weight to more than 889,500 plastic grocery bags.

was able to meter the material and pump it into the mix just like they would do with regular asphalt. There has been a large push to use plastics in asphalt from sustainability leaders, while this is seen as a win-win from an outsider's perspective, many in the asphalt industry are concerned about the longterm quality of these plastic roadways. What is Dow doing to ensure the longterm success of these roads? From a performance perspective, roads using PMA have been shown to be longer-lasting and more durable. Using the combination of RET and recycled polymers can meet industry specifications, per data generated so far from our projects. Asphalt roads are inherently sustainable. End-of-life pavement is commonly recycled and reused in new pavement. Now, we’re making these roads even more sustainable by adding used plastic to the asphalt mix to divert it from landfills. We’re encouraged by the positive results we’re seeing from these roads in North America and across the world. We continue to perform extensive road testing and monitoring to evaluate and optimize the technology so it can be adopted by regulating bodies and transport authorities in the future. Dow believes that plastic waste has value and can be transformed into new products and energy. In addition to plastic roads, Dow is working with key partners in South America to use recycled plastics to develop construction materials for schools in Colombia. Dow is also at the forefront of developing and scaling chemical recycling technology to take recycled plastic waste back to feedstock for the creation of new products.

THE LAST EXIT |

BY JESSICA LOMBARDO, EDITOR

Social Media Helps Build a Community for the

ASPHALT INDUSTRY Construction workers new and old have found a place to ask questions and further their industry knowledge by joining groups dedicated to their trade

S

ocial media has changed our world. It's helped us to be more connected than ever to the people we know and love. It's also helped us connect with people around the world we've never met before but who we share common interests and talents with. Over the last year, the asphalt industry has seen several groups like this pop up where those of us in the trade could come and share our daily experiences with people who understand. What started out as a place where people came to share funny images and jokes has turned in to a dedicated community of workers who have each others backs. Asphalt Life is one of the newer groups but one that has grown in numbers very fast due to the commitment from the group administrators to keep the page informative and fun. "I decided to start the Asphalt Life Facebook group to create a new kind of paving community online," Edward James, creator of the group says. "Facebook groups have been a little hobby of mine now for a couple years and I wanted a page where people could

interact with each other from every level of paving. Owners to employees to vendors. I’ve tried really hard to keep the group interactive and drama free." Each week, James, who works for Carron Asphalt in Cleveland, OH, will welcome new members and start conversations with them about the equipment they are running, the jobs they are working on and more. The conversational tone of the group has created a safe space for workers to share and has also kept members engaged. And because of that, Asphalt Life is the fastest growing paving group on Facebook and is only 1,000 members away from being the largest pavingrelated group out there. A PLACE TO LEARN Having a group that large can be challenging, but James knows it's important for people to have a place to go and ask questions and get feedback on the work they are doing. The group members post daily showing their successes and failures and the members of the group are there to congratulate and encourage as needed. Users can ask questions of other members about everything from lunch options to equipment features and even discuss best practices for their work.

Responses from other members are monitored and kept courteous as to maintain the community feeling within the group. "Asphalt Life to me is more than a group, it's a life style," James says. "We are a rough neck group of hard working men and women who love hard and play hard and work hard. The group is mainly a dedication to the hard working people in the industry." And that means a lot to James and to the other members of the group. "To me having a network of people like we do is priceless," he says. "To be able to ask a question about paving and have it viewed by over 20k people in seconds is amazing. Comments flood in with good ideas in a moments notice. With groups like ours the working person should never have to be in the dark about paving. "Asphalt Life was a brand in the industry that I wanted to stick. I want to continue to grow it so people can connect and learn from each other in a non judgmental atmosphere."
