FORMS & REINFORCEMENT

Telescoping Forms Make the Job Easier

There are numerous benefits for contractors who use Green Key Concrete Forms including ease of transportation, lightweight and fast set up and cleanup time.

K

evin Parr has been a contractor for 40 years. His experience as a contractor led him and Jimmy Schau, a Union Laborer of Local 1149 to engineer and develop Green Key Telescoping forms. “Over the years we had trouble finding straight lumber or lifting heavy pieces of steel formwork,” Parr says. “Jimmy and I continued to discuss better ways for concrete forming, and we came up with this telescoping form with a built-in key way made of lightweight materials that eliminates the need for saws, fabrication and attaching a key way.” Parr says he and Schau were working on a jobsite getting ready to place concrete. The concrete truck was backing in to position and accidentally busted a wood form along the edge of the slab. While the crew scrambled to fix the form, Parr and Schau decided there had to be an easier way to building concrete forms.

PVC, THE MATERIAL OF CHOICE Green Key Telescoping Forms are comprised of a PVC material with offered the strength and rigidity needed for a form. Parr says one of the challenges in creating these forms was the need to keep the weight low. “A typical 10 foot steel section of forms will weigh around 40 pounds. A 16 foot section of the Green Key Telescoping Forms weighs just under 14 pounds.” Parr says one of the other aspects

that came into play when developing the product was using a plastic material. He says by virtue of the material, they were cutting down their carbon footprint. In doing so, it has allowed Parr to submit the forms to the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) for consideration to be accredited to earn LEED points. The product is waiting to be evaluated by GreenSeal.

TELESCOPING FORM The outer section of the form is designed to hold the inner section in two-, four-, or eight-foot lengths. You’ll notice one side of the form is smooth for edge slab applications and one key way side is designed to be used for construction joints. Standard ¾” nail pin holes are predrilled in the section. The inner section of the form fits in the outer section to extend the form up to 16 feet if using the eight foot lengths. The two foot section will extend to four feet and the four foot section will extend to eight feet. For convenience, the inner section includes a thimble on each end to attach in order to maintain a flush top and face. The forms are currently available in standard four inch height and they are taking orders for their new six inch line which is currently in production. They should be on the market by the end of the year.

CONSIDERING SAFETY Take a look at the telescoping forms and at first glance, you’ll notice

the fluorescent green color. That is no mistake. In fact, Parr says the color of the forms serves a unique and distinct purpose. “One of the issues when constructing large slabs, is sometimes the contractor needs to be out early in the morning to beat the heat. If it’s early in the morning, it may still be dark out, these form glow in the dark. You might not see the concrete you’re pouring, but you’ll see the form.”

BENEFITS TO THE CONTRACTOR? With the Green Key Concrete Forms, Parr says there are numerous benefits for contractors to use this type of forming system. Transporting the forms requires no special truck. A regular pickup truck with an eight foot bed and the tailgate closed will easily transport the forms and the contractor will save space as opposed to other forming options. Given the PVC material, the forms are lighter to carry on and off the jobsite. Installation becomes quicker and easier than traditional wood forms. “With wood you have to fight the twists and bows,” Parr says. “With these forms, it is totally possible to stretch them out, extend to the second piece and begin working. All a contractor needs to do is align the thimble with the next set and everything stays nice and straight.” The forms are manufactured within an 1/8 inch tolerance. “This makes it easy to get an 1/8 inch

straight when installing the forms. In the time it takes to get wood forms straightened versus these forms, you will save time,” explains Parr. The key way of the form is molded on one side, eliminating any work needed to obtain key way specifications. This feature alone will save enough money in labor and material to pay for the forms. The key way allows contractors the ability to interlock slabs. Finally, Parr says, decorative concrete contractors who are involved in stamping and staining work will find the Green Key forms a useful addition to their tools of the trade. “This is an excellent product for the stamping segment of the industry. The PVC does not absorb the dye or coloring and washes off with water. Contractors will avoid the chance of color bleeding when used on another project.”

with was how easy they come off when it’s time to strip the forms. Typically, a contractor has to beat on the form and scrape the form to get them to release from a slab. With this, literally, a contractor pulls the pins off and they fall off the slab. It’s that easy.” McAvoy also says he likes the versatile nature of the forms. “I like

the fact that one side is smooth and the other side has the key way in it. There’s always a situation where a contractor is going to have to put quite a few key ways in a job. This is one set of forms that does it all.” Ed. Note: For more information, visit www.greenkeyconcreteforms.com or direct at (740) 827-3635.

MAINTENANCE According to Parr clean-up and maintenance is quick and easy. Prior to placing the concrete, Parr says both sides of the form is sprayed with WD40 (or some other release agent). The concrete will not stick to the form if this is done prior to the placement. “When you strip the forms the next day, clean-up is performed by using a foundation brush to brush off any residual concrete. Slide the forms back together and you’re done.” The PVC material creates a surface that concrete will not stick and can typically be wiped clean.

ONE CONTRACTOR’S EXPERIENCE General contractor, Mike McAvoy of T&M Construction, Seguine, Texas owns four, eight foot sections which extend out to 16 feet each piece. “Time is money and a contractor will save both. Considering set-up time and clean-up time, these forms cut both by at least a third.” McAvoy says learning how to set them up was fast and easy. “The most impressive thing I was struck

PERI has introduced a new slab formwork system to the US market. GRIDFLEX is a lightweight aluminum grid element system that saves time by eliminating the need to set up and position girders individually, by providing ready-made aluminum grid elements that are simply hooked into the prophead and erected from below. •  Requires only four main components – prophead, one standard and two filler elements – making GRIDFLEX intuitive and straight forward. •  After an area is enclosed, the grid just needs to be covered with any grade of plywood which is then nailed down to the aluminum struts. •  The lightweight design, with a standard element only weighing around 40 lbs., allows a single person to easily handle the system. •  GRIDFLEX is expected to be a major productivity upgrade in terms of time and labor savings for contractors who are still doing a lot of work with girder slab formwork or heavy panel slab formwork. Foam-Control Plus+ provides cost-effective alternative for the University of Iowa and local building team.

M

ore than six years since the flood of 2008 destroyed the University of Iowa’s Voxman Music Building, the Hawkeye Marching Band is finally enjoying the benefits of a new indoor practice facility. Completed in the fall of 2014 as part of the Tennis and Recreation Complex, the band’s 82,000-square-foot indoor turf practice facility was constructed by General Contractor Russell under the State of Iowa’s first ever designbuild contract. This new $15 million facility features a full-scale artificial turf practice field that additionally provides much-needed indoor athletic facilities for the University’s intramural and club sports, as well as some athletic department teams. Iowa’s intense weather produces temperatures swings that range from below zero in the winter months to above 90 degrees during the summer. As a result, designers and builders need reliable, durable insulation strategies that perform well in both extremes. During the project development phase, the design-build team recognized that a key consideration for the University would be how to mitigate long-term heating and cooling costs for a building roughly the size of a football field for the life of the facility. For a space that size, in-floor radiant heating provided a lot of advantages over forced-air.

“Because this was a designbuild project, there was a lot of opportunity to provide value analysis-based solutions during the pre-construction phase,” remarks Jim Seelman of MBA Incorporated (MBA), the subcontractor responsible for the indoor turf scope of work under Russell. MBA specializes in turf field construction and was familiar with a variety of architectural grade expanded polystyrene (EPS) insulation products that would support the radiant heating system. Since the design called for some 80,000 square feet of under-slab insulation, Seelman recommended ACH Foam Technologies’ FoamControl Plus+ as an ideal solution. In part, Seelman’s recommendation centered on the

80,000 square feet of under-slab foam insulation was installed in a single 12hour night’s work, tallying roughly 250 man hours of labor. Photo Credit: ACH Foam Technologies

product’s favorable cost compared to XPS alternatives. Seelman estimates that selecting FoamControl Plus+ saved the project more than $100,000 in material costs alone over the original specified product. In addition, the selected product had to meet the University’s performance criteria. Compressive strength was one key consideration since the design called for a six-inch layer of rock aggregate on top of the insulation, followed by the artificial turf. Placing the aggregate on top of the insulation required large trucks to

drive onto the already-placed foam to dump the material, which was then finished in place. Other factors were the superior R-value of Foam Control Plus+; the ease with which the radiant heating piping could be laid into the insulation; and the product’s 50-year warranty. It is also the first EPS insulation on the market to come in uniform pre-scored pieces, increasing the ease and flexibility of installation. “This product is extremely easy to install,” Seelman says. “We actually hired the local high school football team to help with the installation, and the kids were able to use the work as a team fundraising project.” Under MBA’s guidance, all 80,000 square feet of under-slab foam insulation were installed in a single 12-hour night’s work, tallying roughly 250 man hours of labor. “There were about 20 players from the team and those boys worked so hard, we actually were pressed to keep the materials coming to them fast enough. They laid out the foam, tapped the joints, and kept the overall grid really straight. They also ate about $300 of pizza, but it was a great experience for all of us.” The evenness of the product was also crucial. Since the insulation was being installed below grade, any inconsistencies in level could contribute to an uneven foundation. MBA used a laser grading system to ensure a highly precise finish grade The superior R-value of Foam Control Plus+ offered a solution to which the radiant heating piping could be laid into the insulation. that remained flush within a quarter of an inch to support the aggregate and turf layers. Seelman also touted Foam Control Plus+’s uniformity, calling it “the most square” foam product on the market. Though the design-build methodology is tried and true for builders and clients across the county, for the University of Iowa it was an unfamiliar process. That meant increased attention paid to every design and construction decision, including material selection and procurement. According to Seelman, the University wanted all long-lead items accounted for well before they were actually needed on site. “When we made the switch from the original specified product to Foam Control Plus+, the University wanted actual photographic proof that we would have the required volume of materials on hand and ready for installation,” notes Seelman.

More than six years since the flood of 2008 destroyed the University of Iowa’s Voxman Music Building, the Hawkeye Marching Band is finally enjoying the benefits of a new indoor practice facility. Completed in the fall of 2014 as part of the Tennis and Recreation Complex, the band’s 82,000-square-foot indoor turf practice facility features a full-scale artificial turf practice field that additionally provides much-needed indoor athletic facilities for the University’s intramural and club sports, as well as some athletic department teams. Photo Credit: ACH Foam Technologies

“When you are talking about pre-purchasing 80,000 square feet of foam insulation, it’s not the kind of thing that can be brought to a congested construction site and simply stored until it’s ready to be installed.” Working with Seelman and the local product distributor, Whitecap, ACH Foam Technologies processed the material order and then stored the foam until the foundation was ready. Knowing that many contractors find themselves in similar situations, ACH Foam Technologies often works with distributors to warehouse purchased materials and transport them to construction sites for a just-in-time delivery. From quality and performance to cost and customer service, ACH Foam’s Foam-Control Plus+ insulation proved to be a winwin choice for the building owner, designers, and builders.

WORKSITE PRODUCTS & EQUIPMENT

By Gus Armbruster

Avoiding Tier Pressure Hydraulic Hand-held tools give contractors a break from tier changes.

C

ontractors have always been faced with the challenge of getting the most use out of their equipment and achieving a fast ROI. With the development of Tier 4 Final equipment and the subsequent rise in costs, contractors are reevaluating their applications and taking a look at more economical options, such as hydraulically powered tools and equipment. Hydraulic equipment is widely used in Europe and is growing in popularity in the U.S. due to its high versatility and competitive price point. With the implementation of Tier 4 Final standards, the requirement will eventually phase out Tier 4 Interim diesel engines from the marketplace and nudge U.S. contractors toward higher priced equipment. This economic driver is pushing contractors to escape the tier pressure with alternative equipment that feature attractive ROI and excellent versatility.

HYDRAULICALLY DRIVEN ROI’S Hydraulic equipment is a versatile and cost effective alternative to pneumatic tools. There is a wide range of hydraulic tools, from cut-off saws to hydraulic hammers that contractors can use to complete almost any task. And hydraulic equipment is relatively inexpensive to maintain and purchase. For instance, contractors can get an entire hydraulic tool package—a power pack, twin hoses and a hand-held tool—for less than $5,000. If contractors have a truck equipped with a built-in hydraulic

pump, they might only need an oilflow divider to regulate the oil pressure, so getting setup with a hydraulic tool will cost even less. There’s more to hydraulic tools than money savings, though; indoor/ outdoor capabilities, wide tool selections and high outputs make hydraulic tools a versatile and desirable option. The hydraulic power packs are small enough to be brought indoors yet are rugged for outdoor use. Many hydraulic tools, such as breakers, are generally more powerful than pneumatic equipment, because hydraulic oil has more resistance than compressed air. For nearly every pneumatic tool, there is a comparable hydraulic counterpart that fits a variety of applications, including construction, demolition, landscaping and road building and repairs. Low cost of ownership and

minimal downtime is another highlight of hydraulic equipment. Hydraulic power packs require minimal maintenance—regular oil and filter changes and topping off hydraulic oil in the reservoir. This creates short turnaround times for repairs. Some manufacturers also use biodegradable hydraulic oil, which is safer than other hydraulic oils in the event of a spill and less costly to clean up. Hydraulic tool maintenance, like the power packs, is quick and simple. But, before the tool leaves for the jobsite, owners should simply check for oil leaks, tool damage and

excessive wear. They also should refer to the manufacturers’ owners’ manuals for maintenance schedules.

THE POWER BEHIND HYDRAULIC TOOLS A typical hydraulic power pack measures 25 inches tall, 25 inches wide and 30 inches long and easily fits inside a truck box along with other hydraulic tools, such as T-handle hydraulic breakers and cut-off saws. This makes packing a power pack and tools faster, easier and more efficient because more equipment fits in one vehicle instead of loading and securing single- or dual-axle trailers. And for some contractors that have trucks with built-in hydraulic systems, loading and unloading is even easier, since crews might only need to pack the tool and an oil-flow divider. There are multiple hydraulic power packs that operators can match to their particular tools. For instance, a nine-horsepower power pack generates sufficient hydraulic flows for most hand-held hydraulic tools, including breakers, post hole drivers and saws. Some manufacturers offer power packs with as much as 18 horsepower, which generate the required flow for some of the biggest hand-held equipment, such as 80-pound hydraulic breakers. And operators can increase their productivity by attaching two hydraulic tools to a single unit that features twin engines. In addition to flexibility, hydraulic power packs operate efficiently and help contractors save on fuel costs. The engines are relatively small so they need minimal fuel to drive the hydraulic oil to the tools, which results in low fuel consumption. To reduce fuel use even further, some power pack manufacturers install specialized fuel systems that conserve fuel until the operator engages the tools’ throttles. This saves fuel that would otherwise be wasted during idle periods and allows the operator to work longer between refueling.

Indoor/outdoor capabilities, wide tool selections and high outputs make hydraulic tools a desirable option among contractors. Photo Credit: Atlas Copco

With hydraulic power packs contractors can work on cramped worksites, such as stairwell landings, and maneuver around tight corners with a wheeled chassis and handle. Once in position, they simply attach the tool, start the power pack and begin working. Hydraulic tools also are the equipment-of-choice for limited noise and vibration worksites, such as hospitals and museums, because their compact, hydraulic engines generate as few as 90 decibels and produce minimal vibrations. With minimal construction noise and vibrations, surgeons, for example, can concentrate on surgeries, and museums don’t have to worry about vibrations damaging irreplaceable artwork.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Contractors can purchase a hydraulic tool package – a hydraulic power source, a tool and hoses – for less than $5,000, which makes it an economic solution for increasing Tier 4 Final equipment costs. Photo Credit: Atlas Copco

Contractors have a wide range of hydraulic tools to select. Here’s a brief overview of some of the most common hydraulic power tools, including cutoff saws, medium-sized breakers, post drivers and submersible pumps. For concrete repairs and replacement, a 14-inch hydraulic cut-off saw is the tool of choice. This type of cut-off saw spins as fast as 4,000

power-to-weight ratios. For example, 50-pound hydraulic breakers have roughly the same output as 60-pound pneumatic breakers, which give operators hard-hitting power in lightweight tools. Plus, some manufacturers include vibration-reduction features that minimize operator fatigue and the risk of injuries during prolonged use. Post hole borers allow contractors to dig holes for a wide range of applications. Post hole borers use augers that range from 3-1/2-inch to more than 13-inch diameters and feature powerful torque outputs— as much as 232 foot-pounds—to quickly drill precise holes for road signs; plant trees in public parks; and dig footings for fence posts and decks. Some borers feature adjustable torque limiters to prevent the post hole borer from spinning if the auger hits a stone. And two-way rotation capabilities make the augers efficient in stony soils by loosening compacted soil and spinning backward to help operators lift the tool out of the hole when finished. To remove water from areas such as construction sites, flooded basements or utility tunnels, contractors turn to hydraulic submersible pumps. These pumps typically draw more than 500 gallons per minute and handle solid debris as large as two inches in diameter.

rpm and is designed to cut through 5-inch thick concrete, asphalt and steel, making it great for removing precise sections of concrete slabs from walls. For cutting on floors, poured concrete and roads, some

manufacturers also offer an attachable cart. The cart allows the operator to push the saw across the concrete without straining their backs from prolonged crouching. Contractors use hand-held hydraulic breakers for several indoor and outdoor demolition and renovation jobs. Their high working pressures and impact rates make the breakers ideal for removing brickwork and demolishing asphalt and concrete. Like many hydraulic tools, hydraulic breakers have high

From breakers to saws there’s a wide range of hydraulic tools to fit nearly any fleet and project. The versatility, easy maintenance and cost effectiveness gained help contractors overcome the challenges of Tier 4 pressure for greater longevity, versatility and most importantly, ROI. Ed. POWER TOOLS, HAND TOOLS, LASERS & LEVELS

Bringing the Internet, Bluetooth and WiFi, and Battery Operated Tools

TOGETHER The latest in tool technology.

I

n the ever-changing world of electronics and the Internet comes a new technology movement—the “Internet of Things” (IoT). It’s in all of our futures and will influence how we both live and work. Many factors are moving us in the direction of the IoT; inexpensive

Internet rates, coverage everywhere, the almost universal availability of smart phones and tablets, and the increased use of sensors and electronic components in almost everything we use. The IoT is about controlling our devices remotely through the use of the Internet. It also allows manufacturers to collect

Coming in January 2016 will be tools, like the drill/driver shown here, with Bluetooth capability that allows users to use their smart phones or tablets to change factory settings to optimize specific tasks. Buttons on the tool allow up to four task settings, making it easy to move from one to the next.

POWER TOOLS, HAND TOOLS, LASERS & LEVELS information about how their products are used so they can improve them. Over the next few years it’s estimated that billions of devices and electrical equipment will be remotely controlled via the Internet. The Milwaukee Tool company, headquartered in Brookfield, Wisconsin is the first tool manufacturer in the U.S. to link tools to the Internet, also building Bluetooth connectivity into some of their product line. Given the fast rise in interest to the IoT, other manufacturers will soon follow Milwaukee’s lead. Milwaukee’s first cloud application is an inventory control data base. You can include tools from manufacturers but they make it easy to add their own brand tools. When you type in the model number most of the information automatically populates the screen.

Here’s what they are doing to help you work more effectively.

ONE-KEY Over the past couple year’s developers at Milwaukee have been working on a free-to-everyone cloud based program to serve contractor needs. Christian Coulis, vice president of Product Management says ONE-KEY will never stop evolving. It’s available now for anyone to use and can be accessed through both the web and a mobile app. The first benefits will include inventory management, tool reporting and tool control but this is only the beginning—the future doesn’t have limits.

INVENTORY MANAGEMENT This was the first component on the site to launch. It offers a central place for users to keep track

of their tools company wide. It records all the relevant information about a tool; specs, when it was purchased, notes on any repair work, and location. If you are entering a Milwaukee tool all you have to do is type its model number into the data base and the rest of the information populates the form automatically (minus repair history and location). ONE-KEY also accepts tool information from other manufacturers but in that case you have to input all the information. You can even log in things like brooms and other equipment used on jobsites. An important function of inventory management for contractors who perform work at multiple construction sites is the ability to assign tools to a jobsite. During the planning phase of a

10/9/15 9:32 AM

contract you can quickly assemble an inventory of tools for a project. You can also easily remove a tool from one project and post it to another—you always know where your tools are.

TOOL REPORTING This feature of ONE-KEY was launched with the introduction of a Utility Crimping tool used primarily by the electrical trades. Specifications often require specific crimping pressures when a fitting is crimped to a conduit or tubing. Sensors in the tool automatically record the time of crimping and the pressure. This information can automatically be downloaded to the ONE-KEY cloud site to generate reports that will confirm the success and accuracy of an installation, information that can be passed on to inspectors and owners representatives. Coulis says that over time they will introduce a variety of sensors in other tool lines to greatly expand reporting functions. Construction as an industry depends more and more on accuracy and tool reporting will help the industry move in that direction. Tool reporting will also help manufacturers get information from sensors designed to diagnose and track maintenance issues. Users can be notified that maintenance is needed before serious damage occurs and manufacturers can use these reports to design better tools.

TOOL CONTROL In January of 2016, Milwaukee Tool will introduce battery operated models of drill/drivers, hammer drill/ drivers, impact drivers, and compact impact-wrench tool models with ONE-KEY capabilities. Up until this time factories preset tool settings but now workers will be able to program infinite settings matched to an application. This will be accomplished by building Bluetooth and WiFi capabilities into tools and will change the way we use tools.

CONNECTING TOOLS TO BLUETOOTH AND WIFI Coulis says tool manufacturers currently preset such things as constant rpm, fixed torque shutoff range, adjustable torque shutoff range, trigger ramp up rate and current sensing/control at the factory. But what if you could adjust settings on your tool to optimize performance for a specific application? For instance, what if you are using a drill-driver or impact driver to drive 100 screws and you want each screw to properly secure boards together without breaking a screw? That’s the idea behind ONEKEY’s “Tool Control” platform. The factory still has pre-settings but you can change them to conform to specific applications. On a jobsite workers will use their smart phone or tablet app to direct them to a settings screen on ONE-KEY for the tool they are using. They will be able to change settings such as rpm and torque to set optimal tool performance for a task and the tool will automatically stop when an operation is complete. But you will also be able to access pre-set applications that will automatically provide optimal performance for the task—you select the material and fastener variables and ONE-KEY makes the changes. In addition, you can create a profile for the tool for essentially any application that is not in the pre-select menu. This profile can be saved and re-used at any time. These new tools will also have a switch that allows users to preset as many as four applications. Many jobs require multiple operations so switching between preset applications without using your smart phone will save a lot of time. If you misplace a tool you can even use your smart phone to locate it so long as it is within Bluetooth range.

IOT The process of change always has pluses and minuses; it can be hard to make adjustments. But good and useful changes always prevail

Tools with built in Bluetooth can be adjusted for speed, torque level, and trigger sensitivity in order to optimize an application. Shown here is the screen that appears on your smartphone or tablet for changing settings. so people must adapt. Changes involving the IoT will perhaps be easiest for the millennial generation because they embrace electronic technology, smart phones, computers and software more easily than for older generations—other generations will take longer. In the world of battery operated tools Milwaukee Tool is opening the door to the IoT, introducing change. There will be changes that users will like and some they won’t use—you will have an opportunity to help shape this new technology. All tool manufacturers are beginning to explore the possibilities the IoT presents and there is much to come. Five years from now if a tool manufacture is just starting this involvement they might very possibly find themselves on life support.

THE LAST PLACEMENT: BACK TO BASICS

By Luke Sevcik and Vince Hunt

Concrete Consolidation Proper placing and handling techniques provide quality results.

T

he quality of concrete can be significantly improved by vibration. The savings achieved and the improved quality of concrete are now so well established that vibration is an accepted job site practice. Internal vibrators are the most common for concrete consolidation of thick slabs, walls and columns. Because of their design, size, weight, maneuverability and price, they are a very practical means of vibration. Typically, internal vibrators are not considered “big ticket” equipment items, but they are important to providing a quality product. The advantages of consolidating concrete by vibration are: • Greater density of the concrete • Greater strength • Improved bond with reinforcement steel • Greater bond on construction joints • Greater durability • Improved product finish • Reduction in the amount of required cement through the use of drier mixes The basic principal of concrete vibration is to consolidate the mix by removing entrapped air. Vibration is a series of rapid compressive impulses which greatly reduces the surface friction between the various size particles of the mix. The result is the rearrangement of these particles into a denser mass. During the vibration process, unwanted trapped air escapes to the surface. Once the concrete is in place and a fairly level surface has been attained, a systematic pattern of vibrator insertion and removal needs to be done to rid the mix of the remaining entrapped air. The entire

area of placement must be consolidated. Under-vibration (withdrawing too fast) coupled with hit and miss vibrator placement is very common and does not get the job done properly. It is very important that the operator sees to it that all the concrete is vibrated, that form corners are reached and overlapping is done if necessary. The distance between insertions should be about 1 ½ times the head’s effective consolidation radius or radius of influence. Proper vibrator handling entails quickly submerging the vibrator into the fresh lift, then withdrawing it at that rate of one inch per second (never more than two inches per second). This is because air bubbles naturally rise at the same rate in normal concrete. The hole must close completely behind the vibrator after total withdrawal. If not, the mix is too stiff or the vibrator frequency is incorrect. The vibrator has done its job when a thin film of glistening “cream” appears on the surface of the concrete, cement paste rises where the concrete meets the forms, and large air bubbles are no longer surfacing. Choosing the right vibrator type for the application depends on several different factors: • Type of pour: wall, floor, column,

There are many different types of consolidation vibration equipment available for internal consolidation. Pictured here is a backpack vibrator. Photo Credit: Wacker Neuson

curb and gutter, etc. • Height of the wall or structure • Width of the wall or structure • Electrical availability on the jobsite • Electrical source distance • Amount of reinforcing steel • Job specifications • Concrete slump • Concrete mix design There are many different types of consolidation vibration equipment available for internal consolidation. They may include electric flexshaft vibrators, electric high-cycle vibrators, gas powered flex-shaft vibrators, and gas powered backpack modular vibrators. Ed.
