then spent the next year continuing to further develop the product before we started to market it.”

continue pouring around a corner and moving in another direction. Without the device, contractors and their crews would have to use a shovel or a piece of plywood to direct the material into the forms. “There’s really no need to be at the end of the chute other than making sure the chute is directly over the center of the forms,” Royce notes. “Even on front discharge trucks, the truck driver can easily maneuver the chute over the forms and then just back up to continue to pour mix into the forms. The bottom line is that everyone wants to pour faster, and this attachment allows them to do that.” The steel version of The Tailgater costs less than $1,000. While mixer truck manufacturers have not embraced the concept at that price, contractors see the benefit and results of what it can do. As Royce notes, some contractors have cut off a safety cone and tried to strap that to the end of a chute to create a funneling device.

TAILGATER SAVES CONTRACTOR TIME, MONEY Gary Gonthier, owner of Gonthier Concrete in Westfield, Mass., has been using The Tailgater for two years and he’s convinced the attachments saves time and money in helping complete 70 foundations annually. “I’ve been in the business for 35 years and this product definitely improves the way we can pour a foundation wall,” Gonthier says. “It doesn’t eliminate a guy on a project but keeps the forms a lot cleaner because you’re able to direct the flow of material to the center of the forms. “We use this on every pour and really need to buy another one to speed up the transition from one truck to another,” Gonthier adds. “When you’re on a large

pour, it would be quicker to strap a second device to the next truck, so that we can continue the pour without the delay of removing the device from one truck and attaching it to the next truck.” Gonthier did offer one piece of advice he makes sure his entire crew follows, “You need to do a really good job of washing The Tailgater after you’re done to make sure the swivel function of the chute functions the way it is designed to functions. If you don’t, it’s not going to turn as smoothly as you would like.”

hat exactly is a control joint, and where and why do we need them? Simply put, a control joint (or contraction joint) is intended to induce cracking in a concrete slab. Think of it as a “planned” crack; a joint cut into a slab to ensure that as the concrete slab continues to shrink, cracks occurring will do so in a straight, maintainable line at the joint, below the finished concrete surface, as opposed to randomly throughout the slab. Random cracking results in a slab that is not only unattractive, but challenging to maintain. And while most shrinkage occurs within the first year, a concrete slab can continue to shrink and move for years. Any interior concrete, anything from residential slabs to decorative applications to commercial and industrial floors will utilize control joints.

CONTROL JOINT FILLERS - EVOLUTION Concrete control joint fillers have quite a history. Joint filling products have evolved closely with the evolution of the warehousing and distribution industries, forklift and machinery technologies, and the technology behind the products and materials used to fill joints. In the early days of control joints, various soft or very flexible materials were used to fill control joints, if the joint was even to be filled at all, primarily to keep debris and contaminants out of the joint. As decades passed, improvements in equipment and machinery produced hard wheels on pallet jacks and fork lifts, which started impinging on the exposed joint edges, causing spalling to occur. The industry then over compensated with rigid, high-strength epoxy-based products that’ while offering outstanding joint edge protection, welded the slab panels together. As the slab continued to shrink, the “welding” would

prevent the joint from opening, causing random stress cracking to occur in the slab.

MODERN CONTROL JOINT FILLERS Today’s expansive distribution and warehousing industries have grown far beyond what existed thirty, forty, or fifty years ago. Today, massive industrial centers are running 24/7, subject to hard-wheeled traffic around the clock, creating the demand for a control joint filler product that could meet the load transfer demands of today’s equipment while still protecting joint edges. Correspondingly, today’s control joint fillers are more of a wheel load transfer product than a sealant or caulk, and are filled full-depth, or slightly overfilled, then trimmed flush with a floor razor to leave a smooth transition for hard wheels across the joint. Durometer, or hardness, has become one of the key parameters in considering a proper control joint filler. A Shore A

durometer of 80-85 offers the optimal hardness for transferring wheel loads across the joint while maintaining the flexibility that prevents the slabs from being welded together. Another key physical property is that if the joint movement exceeds the capability of the joint filler, the product, not the concrete, will tear cohesively or adhesively rather than de-laminating the concrete itself. This tear is by design and does not constitute a failure of the joint filler. Other than appearance, this tear, does not inhibit the joint filler from functioning and can be refilled with proper preparation later. Today, there are two basic types of control joint filler products that meet todayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ACI and PCA standards for a semi-rigid control joint filler. Semi-rigid epoxy-based and semi-rigid polyurea control joint fillers both offer the ability to meet the above durometer range while providing additional advantages to applicators, contractors, and project owners.

These epoxies incorporate the proper 80-85 durometer hardness but also the flexibility to help prevent welding the slabs together, which can result in de-lamination of the concrete slab. Semi-rigid epoxy joint fillers, when mixed properly, provide a smooth, flowable easy to pour consistency. And convenience. Epoxy-based control joint fillers are typically available in one-to-one ratio, easy-touse options that, due to their long pot life, can be poured, manually applied with a bulk gun, or pumped with a dual component pump. Epoxy control joint fillers are usually shaved the next day, and may require heat to facilitate cutting to get a smooth shave. Although not as prevalent as polyureas, epoxies can be formulated in colors.

POLYUREA CONTROL JOINT FILLERS Like the epoxy-based products, Polyureaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s offer the desired 80-85 durometer, are easy to mix, pour in a flowable consistency, and have the flexibility that prevents welding of slabs.

Polyureas have a higher elongation, which helps resist tearing due to shrinkage and movement of the slab. They are also generally found in oneto-one ratio, easy-to-use options, often in cartridges for manual application or pumped with a dual component pump. Semi-rigid, polyurea control joint fillers, however, have several unique advantages of their own. Polyurea joint fillers are fast-setting - there are products on the market that can be shaved and open to traffic within thirty minutes. The fast-setting and quick shaving capabilities of polyureas also make them ideal for re-caulking or repairing existing joints and cracks in existing floors where a long shutdown is unacceptable. Polyurea material also allows for application and curing down to very low temperatures, sometimes as low as -20° F, opening it up to unique applications such as commercial cold storage spaces. Polyurea joint fillers can also be produced in a variety of color options.

The key to a successful, long-term control joint application in today’s warehousing/distribution center floors is to give the slab enough time – generally 60-90-120 days – to maximize shrinkage, allowing joints to open, which minimizes the long-term potential for tearing. Finally, project owners need to consider the cost of filling their control joints for new construction. On average, filling control joints costs approximately $2.00 per linear foot. Instead of comparing this to not filling the joints at all,

consider the repair costs involved with not filling the joints initially. The repair costs involved with repairing damaged or spalled control joints can range from $5.00 to $10.00 per linear foot.

New asset management tools from manufacturers help contractors plan for tools use and protect them from theft or damage.

ver since the development of cordless tools and the integration of electronic controls into tools in the mid-90s, tool manufacturers have been able to evaluate tool usage at their repair centers. They did this primarily to

find better ways to improve customer experience as they used tools in the field. It also helped them detect abuse. In more recent years electronic hardware has become both faster and cheaper, making it possible for manufacturers to introduce additional software services to increase productivity in the field. It’s possible for instance to communicate with your tool to locate where it is or even change factory settings such as RPM and torque to increase jobsite productivity. According to Eli Share, the IoT (Internet of Things) and Mobile Lead for Bosch Tools, Mount Prospect, Illinois, software solutions were originally conceived to improve product performance. “But the outlook now for additional value added solutions

BOSCH In January 2018 Bosch introduced a new program called BLUEHOUND. If offers contractors a way to keep track of their tools and equipment, assign them to their construction projects, and track them. Contractors start by setting up an account on a Bosch cloud website which can be accessed from anywhere there is access to the web. The heart of their system is cloud-based software that can be accessed by tablet or smart phone. BLUEHOUND uses Bluetooth technology with a communication range

of approximately 100-feet between the tablet or smart phone and the tool or piece of equipment. Using BLUEHOUND Contractors can track any tool or piece of equipment they own. A tool doesn’t have to be manufactured by Bosch, it can be any manufacturers tool and equipment can include such things as forms, shoring systems, gas powered equipment— anything seen as important to the contractor. Bosch thinks mid-sized to large construction companies are the ones who will be the most interested in this service. You can learn more about their BLUEHOUND program by doing a search for it on their website but they also have a network of sales representatives that market it to contractors. When a contractor decides to use BLUEHOUND they contact a field representative to help them design a program. Share says Bosch representatives help them set up their program on the Bosch cloud site and physically help them put tags on everything they want to track. He says a user doesn’t buy hardware, they pay a registration fee and rent cloud service, the tags are provided. Using BLUEHOUND, contractors can assign their assets to a project or multiple projects and then track their use. Smart phones or tablets that have the app for BLUEHOUND installed on them will record the “last seen location” of the asset every time they pass within 100-feet of it. Share says they are also working with a third party vendor who supplies “clips” that help locate assets more locally on large projects. Bosch uses data that contractors input into their cloud service to help them refine their service, though they don’t see anything that a contractor actually logs into their database.

HILTI Hilti’s asset management system is called “ON!Track” and Sean McMurrey, the company’s Product Manager for ON!Track, says it was made available to the public three years

ago in the U.S. They rent cloud space from Amazon Web Services (AWS) that Hilti consultants use to create databases for contractors’ unique needs. Their program is the culmination of years’ worth of study to understand where their customers’ difficulties are. As a result ON!Track focuses on the following areas: • Documentation • Productivity and efficiency • Managing equipment deployment • Controlling theft • Controlling downtime as the result of equipment non-availability • Tracking equipment • Maintenance Hilti defines assets as any equipment, tools, or commodities such as ladders (can be a group of ladders) owned by contractors. In some cases contractors can also track supplies such as concrete anchors for a project in order to know what the current inventory is. As a result Jason Dailey, the company’s Director of Sales and Operations for Hilti’s ON!Track, says that Hilti tools are usually a small percentage of what contractors list on their ON!Track account, usually about 5 percent. The ON!Track program starts with a consultation between Hilti staff and the contractor. Hilti consultants help new clients design the system they want and help them tag all their equipment. Dailey says Hilti offers two systems for tracking; active tags that send out a signal that is picked up by Bluetooth technology, and bar codes. “Users are considered to be passive with Bluetooth technology because tags send out signals. become aware that tools and equipment are being tracked serves as a deterrent. As stated earlier, anyone with the smart phone app that moves within 100 feet of a Bluetooth chip automatically sends the location to the contractors cloud site. Like Bosch, Hilti is experimenting with the use of gateways to strengthen Bluetooth signals on jobsites. Hilti uses data information to further develop their software but doesn’t know what contractors enter on their cloud site

MILWAUKEE TOOLS According to Stephen Matson, Group Program Manager, Milwaukee Tool has a long history of working directly with contractors when developing new solutions. This allows them to not just create a new tool, but something more: an overall solution to specific needs contractors have on the jobsites every day.

Milwaukee® is perhaps the first power tool company to develop a tools and equipment asset management program. The development process started out with an aim to offer users protection and security for their tools, but the Milwaukee® team quickly saw an opportunity to also offer inventory management. The need for this type of inventory solution was further amplified when a University of Michigan study revealed that each person on a jobsite spends approximately 80 minutes waiting for tools, equipment, or product. The asset management program that evolved is called “ONE-KEY.” ONE-KEY helps you keep track of tools that you own, it provides inventory control, keeps maintenance records and tells you when maintenance is needed, it tells when certifications must be updated (some tools require this), it can include all tools and equipment that a contractor owns, it can track when a tool is being used and when it was used last, and it can allocate tools and equipment to a project and who is responsible for them. In addition, in Milwaukee battery operated power tools

One Key allows users to create optimal tool settings for a given task. Using an app on the workers smart phone, workers can use drop-down menus to find their job task and settings such as rpm and torque are changed. For example if you are attaching drywall to wood studs you can set your drill/driver for that application. The drill/driver automatically shuts off when the screw is installed a screw to the right depth. ONE-KEY also uses Bluetooth technology to locate tools and equipment. When you buy Milwaukee power tools that include ONE-KEY technology, nothing more is needed. You can purchase electronic chips that attaches to other tools and equipment and emits a signal that Bluetooth receives. Matson says Milwaukee doesn’t charge customers for using their cloud site. One Key compatible power tools are sold at a premium cost and contractors pay for electronic chips for other equipment but otherwise the service is free and Milwaukee wants to keep it that way. Like the other providers of asset management software reported here,

KLORMAN CONSTRUCTION COMPANY Being able to cost account construction projects in real time is a goal for many middle to large size construction companies and no one has pursued this goal more than Klorman Construction Company based in Woodland Hills, California (located in the Los Angeles area). Their specialty is building structural concrete high-rise buildings and parking structures and often have several under construction at any given time. Bill Klorman, the company’s president and CEO says this type of construction is highly competitive so profit depends on high productivity; real-time cost accounting helps them know how they are doing in time to make corrections if needed. For a project of this size today Klorman assigns approximately 800 cost account areas. To capture cost information the company uses several technologies to automatically track tools, equipment, and materials. These include: Bar codes. Used mostly to identify materials, inventory and hand tools. Workers use smart phones to read them and track check-in and check-out by individual personnel, usage, location, maintenance, and which jobsite all rolls up to current cost account data. Active RFID (radio-frequency identification) chips. Klorman attaches RFID chips to their concrete forms and related equipment. Their signals are picked up automatically by scanners located at jobsite “choke points” –when they arrive on a site and as they move from cost area to cost area as they are used. They also use RFID to track labor as move from one cost account area to the next. WiFi. They use it widely on their

jobs to transmit information Bluetooth. Klorman says they use this technology but not for tracking tools 3D Laser Scanning. The company is currently using this technology more, especially for big model applications Every Monday morning project managers at Klorman receive detailed cost account reports from the preceding week. Much of this information is automatically generated from several sources and it is analyzed by software created by the company—Klorman has computer programmers on their staff. Klorman says he is currently interested in tracking tool performance. They would like to be able to track tool use and productivity rates

MANAGING ASSETS Tool manufacturers are working hard to develop products that will help contractors do a lot of things: organize their work more efficiently, keep maintenance records on equipment, minimize theft, and streamline the effort to cost account. The ultimate according to Klorman is to be able to produce cost account information in real-time so that productivity can be improved constantly. The technology is in its infancy but tool manufacturers and other industries are improving what it can do.

Maddog Portable MIXING SYSTEM When the project calls for more concrete than a small paddle mixer can produce, but not as much as a drum mixer, RHM Ventures’ Maddog Portable Mixing System fills the niche.

t first glance, it looks like a type of rototiller, and it functions similarly like a rototiller. But, that’s about as close as the Maddog Portable Mixing System comes to a gardening tool. The Maddog is a portable, hand-held, small-batch mixing system designed to efficiently mix water with concrete, mortar, grout or stucco in a plastic tub contoured to match the mixing blades, delivering a consistently mixed product every time. In many applications, concrete contractors have managed to replace the more expensive and hard-to-transport drum mixer and the smaller volume alternative of a paddle mixer with the Maddog. Available in both an electric-powered motor and gas-powered 4-cycle Honda engine, the Maddog can mix up to 120 pounds of material in about a minute. It weighs only 40 pounds, making it easy to transport and operate in confined spaces. The electric

version is ideal for interior projects.

IDENTIFYING THE NEED Penn Hulburd, CEO of RMH Ventures, says the realization of the innovative concrete mixing solution involved years of research and development, spearhead by Dennis Riley, one of Hulburd’s partners. “Dennis had been tinkering with the idea 12 years ago, trying to find a way to improve cement mixing,” Hulburd says. “With my experience in business start-ups, we teamed up to conduct more research on the construction industry, particularly the concrete construction industry. Identifying that there were only two methods of mixing small batches of concrete, the drum mixer and the paddle mixer, we set our sights on developing a product that fit somewhere in between those two existing products. “We wanted to develop a mixer that was lightweight, self-contained, and could mix X-quantity of material quickly,” Hulburd notes. “Most importantly, we wanted to design a mixer specifically for the professional concrete contractor. We’re not interested in the

do-it-yourself market.” Focused on the general contractor, concrete contractor, rental companies, industrial supply houses and industrial supply catalogue business, RHM Ventures conducted six months of field evaluations with the final product before launching the product.

“It was important for us to get input from professionals in the field on how the mixer performed, and whether or not it met the needs of professional contractors,” Hulburd states. “We needed input from general contractors running 25 crews in the field to independent contractors working on multiple small projects. With that information we were able to make small adjustments, and we continue to do so as contractors suggest ideas. The Maddog Portable Mixing System has been officially out in the market for three years at a price point around $1,200. The portability of the 40-pound mixer in its storage/mixing tub make it for professional contractors to set up and quickly begin mixing as much as 180 pounds of concrete in 2-3 minutes. It’s just as easy and quick to clean the mixer in 2-3 minutes.

A CONTRACTOR’S PERSPECTIVE Neal J. McKenny of Fortuna, Calif., is a general contractor who quickly

became a believer in what the Maddog could do for his operation. “I’ve been waiting seven years for a product like this to hit the market,” McKenny says. “I saw it displayed at WOC (World of Concrete) and I knew this is what I had been waiting for. It’s so convenient when you have a project inside, like a fireplace.” McKenny also points to the economy of the portable mixer over the drum mixer he utilized in the past. “The problem with a big drum mixer is that the rubber edges of the blades wear out and then you end up mixing an

STRIKE-OFF Combining three tools into one.

aylor Crenshaw, a senior product manager for the Milwaukee Tool Company, Brookfield, Wisconsin, says that getting out on the jobsite to have real discussions with contractors and users is what drives the company’s research and development of its newest tools. This user-focused research is what led them to discover a new way for contractors to strike-off concrete, level, and finish all with one tool. “Concrete workers need to be more efficient than most due to the timesensitive material they’re working with,” he says. “Our goal was to make their work more productive.” The company identified three key

tools these users required every day and combined the functions of each into one easy-to-use solution. This new tool, called the REDSTICK™ Concrete Level, not only levels but it also screeds (strikes-off), and finishes (floats).

THE LEVEL Concrete work such as sidewalks, driveways and curbs are almost always pitched to drain water. The two most standard pitches are 2% and 1%, which is indicated as an individual line on Milwaukee’s new level vial to easily find these measurements. Finishers are pretty good at estimating bubble distance from level but Milwaukee’s new tool makes this easy and accurate. It is customary for a finisher to check the slope of their concrete as they are screeding. This task is easier by combining the level and the screed into one

In the past workers estimated pitch by how much the bubble goes past the level marks set on the vial but this level provides lines to indicate pitch. The first line to the side of the bubble indicates level. The second line marks a 1% pitch or 1/8th of an inch to the foot. The third like indicates a 2% pitch or ¼ of an inch per foot. tool. Now finishers can check the pitch of their work as they are striking off the concrete.

SCREEDING Strike-offs are typically made from wood 2x4’s or aluminum or magnesium metals. Wood 2x4’s are 1-1/2 inches thick and finishers are used to the feel of that width in their hands (striking off concrete is an art and a skill that is developed over time, an especially good skill to have when there is no form to run the strike-off against). The problem with wood is that it’s heavy, it warps when it gets wet, and it’s hard to clean when concrete This new tool comes as little as 2-feet in length, ideal for striking-off curb and gutter work. remains on it very long. Metal strikeboards are usually 2 inches thick (hollow in the center), are always straight as long as they aren’t abused, and their edges remain crisp so that good striking planes are easier to achieve and accurate. However a problem with metal boards is that at 2-inches in thickness they are more difficult and tiring to hold. Wood strike-boards are inexpensive while metal ones cost a lot more. Milwaukee’s new REDSTICK™ Concrete Level is “keyhole shaped.” The base of the concrete screed portion of the level is 2-inches thick, providing an ideal surface for striking off concrete. The top of the level is shaped to fit a person’s hand wrapping around it while the middle of the level is indented for fingers to comfortably grip. The frame of the level is made with magnesium which is overall much lighter. The plastic fittings on the level are made so that they are easy to wash concrete from.

works as a darby to strike-off concrete in difficult to reach small areas. Afterwards finishers can use it as a darby to floatfinish the area in preparation for the final finish.

AN ALL-IN-ONE SOLUTION Milwaukee’s intent was to introduce a solution that addressed three tools in one so that jobsite work could proceed more efficiently. Because there is a level on the tool that can be easily read, finishers can check for level or pitch while they are striking-off concrete, verifying their work to be sure it is correct as they proceed. Worker fatigue is less too because the tool is comfortable and light.

FINISHING Crenshaw says that one end of the concrete level has the typical square end but the other end of the tool has a rounded edge so that finishers can strikeoff coved edges where horizontal concrete meets vertical concrete. The two-inch wide metal base can be angled slightly and moved back and forth across freshly struck-off work to provide a floated finish similar to that of a bull-float. Get Your Workers to Excel at Ordinary Tasks Then Reap the Benefits

here is little fanfare given to the leader or worker who goes about their job every day, performing work in a disciplined and consistent manner. The attention often goes to the individual who pulls off some miraculous effort to save a project from disaster. There is little doubt that “ordinary things” do not possess much excitement. I mean, how can some of the following items be considered anything but ordinary? • Making sure the equipment and vehicles are gassed up, lubed and oiled, and properly loaded and unloaded. • Taking the time to see that all plans, pictures and specifications are in the job file. • Regularly having the crew picking up after themselves to ensure the site is clean. • All project tools and equipment are accounted for daily and returned to their respective storage areas. • Preparing for each new day, conducting morning “huddles” with the workers to be sure that they know their roles and the scope of work for the day. Let’s look at a few efforts that leaders and owners can make to influence their employees to be exceptional at the ordinary things.

COMPLIMENT INDIVIDUALS WHEN THEY PRACTICE THE BASICS Remember, “praise what you want practiced.” When employees receive recognition for doing the basics, they will be more likely to maintain the effort. No different than a professional athlete who methodically prepares for their daily workouts, being consistent on the little things allow the bigger things to be more easily completed.

MAKE IT YOUR NORM TO REMIND WORKERS ABOUT CONSISTENTLY FOLLOWING EVERY PROCESS OR PROCEDURE Contractors will grow frustrated if they assume their workers are all doing the “little” things each day to bring about the best results. Reminding workers helps to keep them focused on following process steps. Being disciplined in the “ordinary” things will make it easier to take on the extraordinary things with more confidence and preparedness.

FORMALLY CREATE AND DOCUMENT THE ORDINARY THINGS

REVIEW PROBLEM JOBS WITH LEADERS AND WORKERS TO DETERMINE WHAT ISN’T CONSISTENTLY FOLLOWED

Whether it is creating a “pre-start” list of tools, equipment, building components, etc., needed for the day or providing crews with an inventory management sheet to keep better track

Finding inconsistencies in following procedures or processes is almost always the reason behind poor work results. Reviewing jobs that had higher than expected costs should always be

looked at to determine the cause of the increased cost and what was or was not followed. Inevitably, the reasons come back to confirm that one or more things were not performed as required.

CONDUCT A “SPRING TRAINING” ONE TO TWO TIMES EACH YEAR If the professional sports teams can require their coaches and players to prepare for the season, is it any less important for our own people to have their own form of “Spring Training”? Use such times to re-educate work efforts, include hands-on learning and challenge workers to strengthen the “ordinary” tasks and how they are to be completed.

PREPARE TO DISCIPLINE THOSE WHO FAIL TO PRACTICE THE BASICS This can be challenging for the contractor that has lost control of workers embracing the need to perform well on the ordinary things. However, when workers, and leaders, are disciplined for failing to perform important basic but needed tasks, then the message begins to be understood that doing the little things really does matter. Failure to do so could cost one their job! One final observation about this topic. Being exceptional at ordinary things reflects the degree of pride within the employee. It is easy to get excited about a new project working for a high-profile customer but not about a small project within our own company. But both project types benefit from workers who are focused, consistent and attentive.
