THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY is experiencing a renaissance of sorts as it moves from a rather singular focus on heavy iron to one that merges technology and machines. How today’s jobsites are run and how equipment is designed, used, managed and maintained are changing dramatically — and the industry has barely scratched the surface on what’s achievable.
While the changes are occurring quickly, implementation within the industry is not. Construction lags behind most industry sectors in technology adoption, despite numerous studies on its potential to improve productivity and cut project costs. Take a recent report by McKinsey & Company, which shows a mere 1% labor productivity growth in construction globally over the past 20 years, compared
Smart design makes a difference When it comes to productivity, details matter. Atlas Copco’s XAS 110 delivers key advances. After more than a decade of continuous development, the XAS 110 stands out from other brands with a compact size, lighter weight and fuel-efficient design. And thanks to the Tier 4 diesel engine, it delivers 110 cfm of air power without the need for exhaust after treatment. With fast, simple maintenance, it’s built for maximum uptime. to 2.8% for the economy as a whole. The report identifies under-investment in technology as a root cause of this lack of productivity. A Texas A&M study further illustrates the industry’s lag in the use of mobile apps, cloud-based systems and other technology, though it also shows more contractors are starting to recognize the potential cost savings that such technology can offer. There are numerous reasons contractors can cite as to why they fail to embrace today’s advanced equipment, systems and processes. Yet, it often boils down to a lack of understanding as to how they can work together to help their businesses become more productive and profitable. There is a great deal of education that still needs to take place to reassure the skeptics and “connect the dots” for them. There is also a need for assistance and training to ensure early adopters have the information and tools they need to maximize their ROI. Because providing such information is a primary part of our mission, this issue of Equipment Today features The Connected Jobsite, a poster sponsored by Volvo Construction Equipment. In it, senior editor Curt Bennink identifies the top trends affecting construction projects and how they interconnect on today’s modern
THERE IS A GREAT DEAL OF EDUCATION THAT STILL NEEDS TO TAKE PLACE TO REASSURE THE SKEPTICS AND “CONNECT THE DOTS” FOR THEM. jobsite. He also touches upon the changes to come that promise to influence jobsites over the next decade and beyond. Since this is a lot of ground to cover within the confines of a few pages, our talented designers have also developed an interactive site at www.FCP.news/ ConnectedSite that takes the technology discussion to a whole new level. The site doesn’t just provides additional content and links on the topics described here. It serves as a one-of-a-kind visual and interactive experience utilizing some of the latest advances in digital media — including a virtual reality-type experience incorporating video within a video. The objective of the poster and the ConnectedSite is to give you a glimpse into what’s possible for your construction operation now and down the road. We hope you’ll check them both out to see what is currently being achieved, what is achievable in the near term and what may be coming in the (potentially sooner than you think) future. rawl into the cab of any current generation earthmoving equipment and you’re likely to witness fewer blind spots and better sightlines to the work tools. Glass areas have increased and hoods have been reshaped. This emphasis was born from the reality that enhanced visibility to the work tool and jobsite surroundings results in increased productivity as well as jobsite safety. “Big and small alike, visibility is a big issue, not only from the machine, but the surroundings, as well,” says Lonnie Fritz, market professional, Caterpillar. “To improve that, it really starts with the cab — improving visibility from the cab by increasing the surface area of the glass. We put a lot of time and effort into our cabs. That is where the operator is going to live for eight or more hours a day. We need them to be safe and comfortable.” Over time, the size of equipment on the jobsite has increased and engine compartments have grown to handle aftertreatment systems. “One of the biggest challenges with visibility and today’s heavy construction equipment is the physical size of the machine,” says Aaron
Many OEMs offer 360° visibility around the machine via images stitched together from several cameras. The technology is similar to many automotive camera systems.
Kleingartner, marketing manager, Doosan Infracore North America. “As components get bigger and the machines scale up in size, the operator must have an understanding of the physical size of the machine and how much space is needed to operate the machine. “Additional tools like mirrors and cameras can help operators improve their all-around visibility,” he continues, “but it is still up to the operator to understand the machine’s capabilities and the surrounding area.”
spend a significant amount of time on it,” says Gordon Miller, director, John Deere construction engineering. “We use the latest computer-aided design tools to ensure our equipment has optimized visibility. These tools include virtual reality and physical evaluations.” These tools are used to optimally place components. “This applies to mirror locations, hood sightlines, control placements and a multitude of other components,” says Miller. “One of the biggest challenges is the size of the equipment.”
CAMERA TECHNOLOGY BECOMES STANDARD Devices such as cameras add an additional level of “visibility” and improve jobsite safety, especially on larger machines. “We have a vast product line. Most of
“AS COMPONENTS GET BIGGER AND THE MACHINES SCALE UP IN SIZE, THE OPERATOR MUST HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICAL SIZE OF THE MACHINE AND HOW MUCH SPACE IS NEEDED TO OPERATE THE MACHINE.” — Aaron Kleingartner, Doosan Infracore North America The best designs feature “built-in” visibility. “We try to design the visibility within the machine itself,” says Ashby Graham, JCB North America general manager. “We don’t want to rely on add-on visibility too much (cameras, mirrors, etc.). “That being said, we do have rear view cameras in some of our larger machines — large excavators, wheel loaders, some of the telehandlers,” she acknowledges. “We have the rear view cameras just for that additional visibility and productivity. If an operator can see what he is doing, he is going to feel safer and be more productive.” Modern design tools make it possible to greatly enhance visibility. “All-around visibility is extremely important and we
our products come standard with rear view cameras,” says Fritz. “The optional technology is the 360° visibility.” Camera technology virtually eliminates blind spots. “Rear view cameras are becoming more common in the industry, and like other technology, the quality is constantly improving,” says Andrew Dargatz, brand marketing manager, Case Construction Equipment. “Our D series excavators feature the rear view cameras as standard on all models. Operators can also choose to add a side camera to provide greater visibility, which is often blocked by the boom when operating.” The company also offers the Case Max View monitor that uses imagery from two side cameras and the rear view camera to provide a 270° aerial view around the machine. “This gives the operators a better view of their complete surroundings when operating,” says Dargatz. “This technology helps

to address operator fatigue and improve operator confidence in their surroundings to improve production speed and efficiency.” Similar to many automotive camera systems, many OEMs offer 360° visibility around the machine as images from several cameras are stitched together. “Safety on the jobsite is an absolute necessity,” says Michael Fuller, marketing product and training specialist, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas. “That’s why Hyundai developed our All-Around View Monitoring (AAVM) system.” AAVM was introduced in 2015 on HX series excavators, and the system’s availability was recently announced for HL900 series wheel loaders. The AAVM uses the company’s proprietary imaging software to display multiple 3D and 2D views of the operator’s working environment, including a 360° bird’s-eye view. But cameras are only one of the technologies that can alleviate blind spots. “Included in the AAVM system is the IMOD (Intelligent Moving-Object Detection) system that senses and warns the operator with on-screen flashing arrows and an alarm when objects come within either of two selectable ranges — 6.5 ft. or 22.9 ft. — of the machine,” says Fuller. “The image is integrated into the Hyundai color touchscreen cluster-monitor in the excavator or wheel loader cab.” Starting in 2018, Doosan offers a standard rear view camera on all of its heavy construction equipment, including crawler and wheel excavators, wheel loaders and articulated dump trucks (ADTs). “On our articulated dump trucks, the rear view camera can function like a backup camera to supplement the view from the mirrors,” says Kleingartner. “The ADT camera can help improve productivity for the operator when backing up the truck to be loaded by an excavator or a wheel loader. “Specific to excavators and wheel loaders, the rear view camera aids operators with their view around the machine,” he continues. “LCD monitors allow operators to view the rear view camera image while still seeing machine information on the monitor.” Caterpillar uses the WAVS (Work Area Vision System) on

approach in driving safety,” says Fritz. “Not only is the operator empowered with visibility from camera technology, but also detection of objects and personnel from Caterpillar’s Detect for Personnel technology under the Cat Connect Suite of technology solutions.” Cat Detect uses RFID technology to notify operators when any personnel are within a specified distance of a machine. “The Detect antenna on the machine itself is recognizing and picking up the RFID receiver being worn in a vest or being worn in the hard hat of a worker who is on the ground. Audible alerts are sent out to not only the worker, but also the operator. “Statistics are showing the advantages that these wearables bring,” Fritz explains. “The Cat detection system takes it to the next level of semi-autonomous object detection. It gives you more visibility and more awareness and understanding of exactly who is around you. We see customers continue to adopt our Detect technologies, as well as our camera technologies exponentially.” The current technology has proven reliable. “With Cat Detect for Personnel, there are no false alarms,” says Fritz. “It only detects personnel with an RFID. It offers high accuracy and repeatability detecting personnel, whether they are upright, crouching or lying down. If that machine is detecting and notifying the operator of their surrounding environment, there is definitely somebody within that working radius in the geofence of that machine.”
IMPROVING SIGHTLINES OEMs spend a lot of time scrutinizing sightlines. “It’s all about increasing cab to ground visibility, as well as to the work tool,” says Fritz. “If you look at [Caterpillar’s] track-type tractor, we have narrowed the engine

EARTHMOVING REVIEW
Paint schemes can help with visibility. The lower contrast of Doosan’s charcoal lift arm with the background allows the eyes to shift focus to the background, which provides improved visibility to the work area.

On the Next Generation excavators, we are increasing the surface area of the glass. We have lowered the front profile of the machine’s cab so the operator does not have to sit up or lean forward to look down over the floor of the machine to see the work tool.” The company also improved visibility on the right side of the excavator. Bigger windows with better placement translate into greater visibility for new Hyundai excavators. “The HX series cabs have a very low sightline at just 18.5 in. from the base of the lower front glass — not to mention that the thin profile sightline comes in at only 1/2 in. wide [between the upper and lower glass],” says Fuller. “This is especially useful when a worker is down in a ditch or when an operator is performing trenching applications. “Also, the large right-hand side, one-piece window has a teardrop base, allowing the operator to see the outside edge of

the right track as well as the ground,” he points out. “Leftside visibility in the HX series is enhanced by a two-piece sliding window with a thin 1/2-in. profile in the cab door. A total of three large 6” x 9.5” mirrors allow the operator to see down both sides of the machine.” Case G Series wheel loaders feature a redesigned cab for increased visibility. “The G series design changed operators’ forward view when operating with a redesigned front windscreen — the traditional three-pane front windscreen being replaced with a single large curved windscreen,” says Dargatz. “This new windscreen improves the continuity of the operators’ visual field and reduces potential blind spots during operation. “The G Series also removed the instrument panel from the steering console and transferred those tools to a standalone high-resolution anti-glare LED monitor,” he adds. “Removing this instrument cluster gives the
operator greater visibility down to the loader arms and bucket. The new LED monitor also allows operators to program the optional rear view camera with camera overlay. The rear view camera can be programmed to remain on at all times or to activate when the machine is put in reverse.” Even paint schemes can help with visibility. “Starting in 2018, new Doosan wheel loaders feature a paint scheme update to the loader’s lift arms,” says Kleingartner. “We switched from our highly recognizable Doosan orange paint to a charcoal. Darker colors tend to blend in with a background, while brighter colors, such as orange, are more likely to stand out. So, the lower contrast of the charcoal lift arm with the background allows the eyes to shift focus to the background, which provides the optical perception of improved visibility to the work area.” On its single loader arm design skid steers and compact track loaders, JCB already

All of the Hi-Viz models feature a new JCB Powerboom loading arm, which has a 50mm lower profile than in the previous generation. This improves the view across the boom to the operator’s righthand side. In addition, a new front screen with lighter frame offers improved forward visibility, helped in part by moving the wiper motor to the left-hand side of the window. ET

PROPER OPERATION TIPS for Backhoe-loaders
I
n the most basic sense, a backhoe-loader is designed to do one primary task: Dig. And it does that, very well in fact. Combine that with material lifting and moving capabilities, then team it up with different attachments for added capabilities, and you have a solid machine that can perform numerous tasks on the jobsite. While all the opportunity for productivity is great, getting the most productivity out of a backhoe is not about buying more attachments, filling up the bucket or driving the machine faster around the jobsite. There are a few key yet simple operational tips that every operator can use to get more uptime, better results and even increased safety with backhoe operation.
THOROUGH TRAINING Whether a 10-year veteran of a company or a new employee, the first step of proper backhoe operation is proper training. This isn’t limited to operators only; for best results, owners, technicians and anyone else who may work with the machine should be trained on it, as well. A company looking for training assistance can start with the dealership. RDO Equipment Co. and other reputable dealers typically provide free training at the time of equipment setup. Equipment professionals
looking to go the extra mile can take the initiative to do individual training, too. Reading the operator’s manual, learning the controls, even watching videos from the manufacturer can all help operators hone their skills.
PRE-OPERATION OPERATION Even after basic training is completed, every operator must be fully comfortable with how a particular machine operates before beginning any work. With numerous settings and options, each machine will be different, and those differences can range
a feel for the unit’s steering. Depending on the model of backhoe, steering can be touchy, similar to a car.
REGULAR ROUTINE MAINTENANCE At the start of every workday, the machine operator should conduct basic maintenance checks to ensure the backhoe is primed and ready to go. For added convenience, some manufacturers, like John Deere, include a maintenance chart right on the machine. An example of a basic, daily checklist might look something like this:
needed
STANDARD SAFETY CHECKS Safety is a top priority on jobsites. Not only does this ensure a proper work environment for employees, it’s key to productive equipment operation. This makes the pre-operation safety check one of the most important steps of backhoe operation. Whenever digging is part of the scope of work, a site should be pre-inspected. Any underground obstructions must be properly noted/marked and com-
Most backhoes are set up to run on either a backhoe or excavator digging control pattern. Before operating, check the setting and adjust if needed.
While all the opportunity for productivity is great, getting the most productivity out of a backhoe is not about buying more attachments, filling up the bucket or driving the machine faster around the jobsite. from barely noticeable to something that would drastically affect operation. Take time to get familiar with controls. Most backhoes are set up to run on either a backhoe or excavator digging control pattern, so every operator should check the setting to be aware of the option and, if needed, adjust to suit preference. Also important is to get
˜˜ Check for anything that
appears to be damaged or that could interfere with operation ˜˜ Check for flat tires or signs of inadequate inflation ˜˜ Check all fluids (fuel, oil, hydraulic fluid, DEF and coolant/antifreeze) ˜˜ Check high-activity areas of the machine and apply grease where needed

municated to all team members. If this hasn’t been done, a responsible backhoe operator must call before digging to avoid unexpected interruption to work, or worse, damage to underground utility lines and potential safety hazards. In addition to underground utility lines, backhoe operators must be aware of overhead lines, and take caution to avoid coming in contact with them.

THREE KEYS TO SAFE OPERATION As one of the most popular pieces of construction equipment, backhoe-loaders are present on nearly every jobsite, so it’s especially important for backhoe operators to have solid training and awareness in safe operation, emphasizes Kyle Braswell, RDO Equipment Co. Before a backhoe starts up for the day, throughout the workday and up until the operator heads home, backhoe safety must be top of mind. When operating a backhoe, having a safety checklist is a great way to ensure the busyness and chaos of the workday doesn’t take away from sound safety practices. Start with these key areas then expand your daily program to meet the unique needs of your jobsite, workers and equipment.
1. PRIOR TO STARTUP Every backhoe operator should have thorough knowledge of the work site. Two areas of particular concern with backhoes are utilities, both underground and overhead. An operator should never dig if he or she is unaware of what lies beneath the surface. The standard “call-before-youdig” and utility markings should be taken care of before a project begins. During daily operation, it’s best to keep the backhoe away from areas with overhead power lines; however, if work is required near them, the operator must be aware and take caution not to make contact. Before work starts for the day, everyone on site should review the basic hand signals common with backhoe operation. This ensures clear communication and understanding between the machine operator and workers on foot. Prior to starting the machine, conduct a quick walkaround inspection, looking for any visible signs of damage, excessive buildup of debris, broken mirrors or lights or anything else that could be a safety hazard. Any items of concern should be addressed immediately to prevent potential safety incidents during the workday. After the backhoe has been cleared to begin work, maintain three points of contact when entering the cab. Clean the operator station of any
clutter that could get in the way and, as a final safety check, test the horn and backup alarm to be sure both are in proper working order.
2. DAILY OPERATION Most backhoes are set up to run on either a backhoe or excavator digging control pattern. Be sure to check the setting prior to doing any work in case someone else operated the machine and changed the setting. If the backhoe is driving from one area or site to another, ensure the boom is locked and the swing lock is in place. A few simple operation best practices can also go a long way to enhancing safety for the operator and others on site. First, always use the stabilizers when digging. Don’t operate the backhoe on steep or uneven grades, or too close to a ledge, to prevent tipping or falls. It’s also advised to keep a load close to the ground, only raising it until it’s at a spot ready to be dumped.
3. BEFORE CALLING IT A DAY After a long day on the jobsite, it’s tempting to shut down the backhoe and leave. However, a few final checks and practices are necessary to end the day on a safe note. First, be sure there are no workers near the machine who could be in harm’s way as the machine goes through its shutdown process. Park the backhoe on a flat, stable surface and lower the boom to a safe position, ensuring the bucket is fully on the ground. Engage the parking brake; even though the machine is parked on a level surface, it’s a good final step to take and ensures the machine is in a fully secured, safe position for the first person who uses it the next morning. Exit the backhoe, again maintaining three points of contact, then do a final walkaround. Check for any excess debris buildup, as well as areas that look to be damaged and could possibly be missed during the following morning’s safety checks.

Additional safe operation tips include: ˜˜ Honk the horn prior to moving the machine to alert those nearby ˜˜ Ensure the boom is locked and swing lock is in place before driving the machine ˜˜ Never leave the operator seat when the backhoe is running ˜˜ Do not go under the machine if it’s running When it’s time to shut off the machine, park it on a stable surface, then lower both the loader and bucket so they’re resting securely on the ground, and engage the parking brake.
WARM UP TO COOL DOWN AND EVERYTHING IN BETWEEN The above areas discussed are all important to achieving optimum backhoe operation. But what about actual operating tips? Here are six best practices every operator can adopt. ˜˜ After starting the machine, allow it to warm up a bit before engaging the controls. This gives hydraulic fluid the chance to circulate and warm up, preventing potential hiccups to operation. ˜˜ When positioning the machine to dig, engage the stabilizers to prevent the machine from rocking or tipping. For best control, expand the stabilizers to their full width. ˜˜ Don’t overload the bucket. It may seem like a way to enhance productivity and efficiency but an overloaded bucket can spill material and strain the loader, causing both immediate and long-term stalls to operation. ˜˜ Keep the bucket low during transport. This will help prevent material spillage and also protect the machine from tipping in the event an obstacle or hole is encountered. ˜˜ Avoid having to go back and redig areas by dumping away from the immediate excavation area. ˜˜ At the end of the day, allow the machine ample time to cool down before fully shutting it off. Maintenance checks, especially to the engine, should only be done when the machine has cooled completely. Although it’s by no means rocket science, optimum backhoe performance doesn’t happen by accident. Equipment professionals must apply a thoughtful and thorough approach to operation, every day, in order to get the most out of a backhoe. ET

MONITORING
For Topcon and other technology companies in its niche, providing connected solutions enables contractors to have comprehensive monitoring of conditions, operations and the jobsite via sensors and data. Assets can be monitored from wherever the contractor is physically located. It enables real-time communication and task management with machines and crews on the site. In addition, the entire fleet can be connected. “The result for customers is higher productivity, less downtime and waste and ultimately more profitability, combined with less stress,” says Ivan Di Federico, Topcon. “We absolutely design our solutions with IoT top of mind.” For example, the Tierra remote asset management system provides total visibility and control, including diagnostics and maintenance for reducing costs and improving performance. “Our MAGNET software solutions suite provides realtime connected support for hardware, as well as integration with our Sitelink3D service for instant data transfer and connectivity into active project sites,” states Di Federico. “Additionally, Sitelink3D allows customers to plan, schedule, assign tasks and get reports all in real time. When practically any new product or system is designed, integration with these solutions is a standard and expected procedure.” As a result, contractors are able to bid projects more accurately based on their own historic production data and get jobs completed faster, more accurately and more efficiently. “For construction contractors and OEMs today,” says Di Federico, “the tremendous benefits of IoT enhances the decision-making process for obtaining the best possible management of resources, fleets and personnel.”

Fundamentals of IoT for C The focus is to provide easier, reliable access to jobsite data.
P
erhaps the best definition of the Internet of Things (IoT) appeared in a Forbes magazine article written by the futurist Jacob Morgan. According to Morgan, the IoT refers to the concept of “basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other).” The technologies behind the IoT have existed for years in the construction market. Features such as remote access, officeto-field data exchange, cloud computing and data storage are not new. It’s more about contractors accepting and investing in the technologies. Technology developers in the construction market are now focusing on creating easier, reliable access to the abundance of data. “The opportunities are seemingly limitless. The power of IoT provides comprehensive planning, process control, workflow monitoring and extensive reporting that will bring our customers the full advantages of connectivity,” says Ivan Di Federico, executive vice president and chief strategy officer, Topcon Positioning Systems.
Equipping each piece of equipment with the capability to send and receive data allows the IoT Platform to reproduce a detailed digital representation of the product, called a digital twin. Connected solutions enable contractors to have comprehensive monitoring of conditions, operations and the work site through sensors and data.
IOT PLATFORM What is referred to as the “IoT Platform” is the operating world in which the construction market has been evolving. The IoT Platform is meant to provide equipment manufacturers and construction contractors with analytics and reports about various aspects of their tasks and assets in order to enhance the decision-making process and obtain the best possible management of resources, fleets and personnel. In construction, the key is sensors. Sensors make it possible to capture all the information needed to improve decisions with real-time data about the work site and the workforce. Equipping each piece of
equipment with the capability of sending and receiving data allows the platform to reproduce a detailed digital representation of the product itself. That is called a digital twin. “Thanks to the digital twins of our products, activities like monitoring, diagnosis and repair can be completed remotely,” Di Federico states. “What this means is we can
have experts based anywhere in the world able to provide monitoring, troubleshooting and/or repairs without needing to be physically there at the work site or contractor’s location. This would result in tremendous savings of time and travel expenses. Moreover, there can be direct collaboration between on-site personnel and equipment operators and our experts.”

How Telematics Can Deliver Safer Drivers
Information supplied by telematics can be used to improve driver policies, monitor driver behavior and more.

elematics is often regarded as a technology used to gather current vehicle and equipment locations. But for construction businesses, the benefits go far beyond location updates. Telematics provides the tools required to help businesses tackle their most significant business challenges, such as improving driver safety fleet wide. Crashes on the job have far-reaching financial and psychological effects on employees, their coworkers and families and their employers. To help reduce risk for their mobile workforce,

Before holding employees accountable with telematics data, it’s important to lay some groundwork as to how, when and why the information will be used. construction businesses are turning to telematics to enhance their safety protocols by using the information to improve driver policies, monitor driver behavior and maintain safer vehicles.
WRITING DRIVER POLICIES WITH TELEMATICS DATA Before holding employees accountable with telematics data, it’s important to lay some groundwork as to how, when and why the information will be used. It’s highly recommended to put corporate “regulations” in place around the use of telematics so employees are aware from the beginning. When introducing new driver policies that incorporate

To correct unsafe driver behavior, it’s recommended that you to provide ongoing performance feedback with the data gathered from the telematics system.
USE DATA TO MAINTAIN SAFER VEHICLES According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 43% of critical pre-crash events that cause vehicle accidents are attributed to tire failure. Staying on top of preventive maintenance, such as tire rotations, is one of the easiest ways to prevent accidents using telematics. The software’s maintenance module will automatically track runtime and odometer readings, then send reminders when tire rotation and balancing, oil changes, emissions testing or other types of service are due to be completed. It is recommended to send maintenance alerts to management and drivers to ensure vehicles and equipment receive necessary service as soon as possible. Although automated maintenance reminders are effective, a service may still slip through the cracks here and there. To proactively monitor overdue service needs, management should get in the habit of viewing scheduled maintenance reports. These reports should be available ondemand or can be automated by email on a daily/weekly/
When Bill Howe Plumbing noticed an increase in accidents on the road, the company knew it needed to find a solution to help improve driving behaviors and maintain its good reputation. The contractor knew it needed a solution to monitor driver behavior and see that data easily. Using REVEAL from Verizon Connect, Bill Howe can see actionable data, plus utilize many additional benefits. • WEEKLY REPORTING AND ALERTS: When unsafe driving occurs — speeding, hard braking, fast acceleration and hard cornering – Rhett Wheeler, risk manager, receives immediate alerts, as well as weekly reports. This helps him coach drivers on their safety scores. • VEHICLE MAINTENANCE REMINDERS: The company used to rely on its technicians to tell it when a vehicle needed service. Now alerts are automatically received for oil changes, part replacements and other critical maintenance. This helps the mechanic keep vehicles in top condition. • CUSTOMER SUPPORT: Bill Howe needed to have a good relationship with its vendor. Verizon Connect provided the total experience from the beginning with a quick implementation. Four technicians completed the installation on 130 vehicles within three days, and they handled the backend process of inputting employee contact information into the devices. According to Wheeler, the company’s initial safety reports “were very shocking.” The average safety score was a 77, and some were below 30. Through driver coaching, this average improved to a 97. The year before implementing REVEAL, the company had 16 accidents totaling nearly $1 million in damages. After implementation, accidents dropped to two. One driver commented that his “driving habits have changed dramatically.” The contractor has seen other positive side effects, including lower insurance costs and reduced fuel consumption. With fewer accidents and better vehicle maintenance, technicians are on the road more often to do more jobs and bring in more revenue. The Live Map feature and GPS tracking also helps route them to jobs more efficiently and provide quicker service to customers. According to Tina Howe, vice president at Bill Howe Plumbing, “It helps us stay in front of our guys 24/7. SEE VIDEO: “Safety is hugely important to us. We looked at many programs, and one www.fcp.news/BillHowe of them was REVEAL,” she continues. “We made the choice, and since then, our [overall] records have been improving, our individual driving records are improving. We couldn’t be happier with the growth we’ve seen.”
According to Wheeler, the company’s initial safety reports “were very shocking.” The average safety score was a 77, and some were below 30. Through driver coaching, this average improved to a 97.
monthly basis. Any outstanding services will be flagged in red on the report so managers can take action and get them completed right away. At the end of the day, when considering the objectives of a
telematics implementation, no reasoning is quite as important as increasing safety for employees and the general public on the roadways. Using telematics as part of a fleet-wide safety initiative will drive the program
miles forward while providing your business with several other impactful benefits. ET

SHAREABLE AND ACCURATE DATA Improves Concrete Pours and Profits
Concrete contractor’s open approach to BIM and accurate data in 3D models leads to greater productivity and more accurate pours.
C
onstruction means collaboration. To efficiently design a construction project today, a lot of information needs to be shared and managed between many people, so companies need a building information modeling (BIM) solution that fits their needs. F.A. Wilhelm Construction Company uses Trimble’s Tekla Structures to manage BIM. The Indianapolis-based concrete company has a diverse portfolio that includes community, entertainment, hospitality, healthcare, green building, corporate and industrial projects as well as parking garages and lots. “We do anything and everything concrete,” says Adam Joraanstad, F.A. Wilhelm’s formwork detailer. Tekla Structures is BIM software that allows for creation and management of accurate, detailed, highly constructible 3D structural models for the entire building process. F.A. Wilhelm uses the software to create and share 3D models. “We have been trying to add
3D modeling into every aspect of our work,” says Joraanstad. “We now use it for pour planning and layout, formwork design, budgeting and organization, as well as some structural engineering on our shoring, reshoring and various other things.”
FAST, ACCURATE DATA Joraanstad says using Tekla Structures increases the speed of modeling a project and provides a lot of good data. “With it, we can quickly and easily create accurate formwork counts, model it, put panels on it faster than ever before. With just a few clicks, we can take a project model and throw panels and parts onto the walls to get a quick number of panels and labor needed for the project budget. We can then go back and tweak the panels for a finalized layout design,” he explains. “Along with that, the speed and efficiency that we get from Tekla allows us to save both time and money.” Because they’re no longer using generic quantities, pour counts are more accurate
28 EQUIPM ENT T OD AY | April 2018 ET0418_28-29_ProfitMatters_BC.indd 28
— which is essential when your largest material expense is concrete. “It also allows us to create more accurate formwork drawings. With just one click, we can place all our ties, and with another click, we can place our clamps,” says Joraanstad. “This creates quick, accurate counts of the parts rather than counting them by hand and potentially making a mistake. “Before, it took a while to add all the ties manually in 3D, and we never tried to place clamps because of how long it would take,” he continues. “Tekla made it so quick, so why not put them in? The same thing goes for modeling in walk boards and scaffold brackets.” All of the parts can also be “clash detected” to see if a tie runs into rebar or embeds, decreasing issues in the field. “We used to use a more restrictive software,” says Joraanstad. “It worked well for standard or simple layouts and situations. But any time we worked with unique buildings — and almost every job has
something unique going on — or even sloping slabs in garages, we would have a lot of issues getting accurate output from the model. Tekla has allowed us to model anything and everything we need including quick and easy custom-built formwork to fit very specific situations. Tekla doesn’t try and think for you, and you don’t lose time trying to fix any of the auto corrections that other software systems try to implement for you.” The software also allows users to create PDFs with color coding. “We color code drawings based off the pours in the schedule,” Joraanstad notes. “In Tekla, it’s extremely quick to cut up your model into pour units. Those pours can then be organized in a sequence to match the schedule. You can then add dates and a lot of other information to a specific pour. We used to color code PDFs by hand to create a better visual for the people in the field. But with Tekla, we can now achieve the same output and create a more accurate and more informative pour layout even faster.”
AN EASY TRANSITION F.A. Wilhelm has only been using the software a short time, and Joraanstad admits that the company isn’t yet using the software to its full potential. “We are
LEFT: Tekla Structures allows end users to share files across multiple software platforms. ABOVE: This 3D model, created using Tekla Structures, is the single source of information for drawings and other outputs, such as reports and NC data files. This ensures that the information in drawings and reports is always up to date, as they react to modifications in the model. still developing it, and we plan to increase its use,” he states. Transitioning to a new system has some learning curves. However,Tekla staff and its resellers help with implementation of Tekla Structures, including constantly testing and developing the software while the customer is getting started with it. “Tekla/Trimble have done an excellent job helping us, as well,” says Joraanstad. “They are always a quick email or video chat away. “At first, Tekla can seem overwhelming to implement,” he comments, “but once we got going, everything made more sense. For us, it has taken a lot of work to add in all of our forming parts and pieces, but the speed and accuracy we have now shows that work upfront was worth it.” ET

The new Silverado HD models were jointly developed with partner Navistar, and will be manufactured at Navistar’s facility in Springfield, OH. Production will begin in late 2018. More than 400 commercially focused Chevrolet dealers are expected to carry the new line. For 2019, Chevrolet also trimmed as much as 450 lbs. from its Silverado 1500 pickup. The body is 88 lbs. lighter due to mixed materials use. All exterior swing panels (doors, hood and tailgate) are made of aluminum, while fixed panels (fenders, roof and bed) are made of steel. The underlying safety cage uses seven different grades of steel, each tailored for the specific application. The boxed steel frame is also 88 lbs. lighter than its predecessor, and has 10% more torsional rigidity. High-performance materials allowed engineers to extend the wheelbase by 3.9 in. The bed floor has also been widened nearly 7 in. The short box now has 63 cu. ft. of volume. The cab is stretched, as well, with crew cab models now offering 3 in. of additional rear seat legroom. This enables a total of 44.5 in. of front legroom and 43.8 in. of rear legroom. The 2019 Silverado will be available with six engine/transmission combinations, including the new 5.3L and 6.2L V8s with Dynamic Fuel Management that actively shuts off any number of cylinders in a variety of combinations to optimize fuel economy. Also available is a new Duramax 3.0L inline-six turbo diesel. Both the 3.0L diesel and 6.2L gasoline engines are paired with a new Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission, and incorporate start/stop technology to improve fuel economy.
RAM 1500 BOASTS INNOVATIVE FEATURES According to Ram Truck, the 2019 Ram 1500 boasts features never before offered in a pickup, plus its overall weight has been reduced by 225 lbs. The truck’s frame uses advanced materials to eliminate 100 lbs. while increasing stiffness and durability, enabling

12,750 lbs. of towing capability and 2,300 lbs. of payload. The frame includes the same impact countermeasures across all configurations, and is made from 98% high-strength steel. Front splayed frame rail technology creates an efficient energy absorbing structure for all impact modes, including front offset with frame integration forward of front tire. Frame-mounted, high-strength steel tire blockers are placed behind the front tires to force wheels outward in the event of impact. To help create a more spacious cab, three longer frame lengths are offered. The 144.5in. wheelbase on Crew Cab short beds and 153.5-in. wheelbase on Crew Cab long beds are both 4 in. longer than their predecessors. The Quad Cab long bed has a wheelbase of 140.5 in. New independent front suspension components combine lightweight composite upper control arms, aluminum lower control arms and retuned geometry for improved responsiveness and handling. New progressive coil springs can handle the truck’s increased payload and towing capability. To improve NVH, new electronically controlled, side frame-mounted active tunedmass modules (ATMM) work in harmony with an interior active noise cancellation (ANC) system

on 5.7-liter HEMI V8-equipped models to reduce ambient sounds down to 67.1 dB. Frequency Response Damping (FRD) technology has found its way into the shocks on all four corners. When the Ram 1500 experiences a slower input — common during cornering and heavy braking — the bypass valve is closed for more aggressive damping, which provides additional stability and poise. When driving normally or exposed to faster shock inputs — common on rough roads or at higher speeds — the valve will open to soften the damping, giving the driver more comfort, confidence and control. A new aluminum tailgate integrates a lift-assist measure. A nitrogen- and oil-charged strut gives consistent assist in even the coldest or warmest climates and consistent assist through the entire tailgate swing. The latchand-lock mechanism is now electronic, reducing the amount of moving parts and allowing owners to drop the tailgate with the interior switch, remotely with the key fob or unlock/open with passive entry. The next-generation electric steering system reduces weight by 6 lbs. and is tuned for lighter, quicker steering. By using an electric motor to power the truck’s rack-and-pinion steering system, the engine is relieved
from the task of constantly turning a hydraulic pump, improving fuel efficiency up to 1.8% and adding 5 hp. The addition of the eTorque mild hybrid system is one of several changes for 2019. The eTorque mild hybrid system replaces the traditional alternator on the engine with a belt-driven motor generator unit that performs several functions. The motor generator unit works with a 48-volt battery pack to enable quick and seamless start/stop function, short duration torque addition to the engine crankshaft in certain driving situations and brake energy regeneration, which improves responsiveness and efficiency. With the engine running, eTorque’s motor generator unit feeds 48-volt current to a 300-watt-hour lithium-ion Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) Graphite battery. The small suitcase-sized, air cooled battery pack mounts to the rear wall inside the cabin. In addition to spinning the engine for restarts, the eTorque unit also recaptures energy during deceleration and braking to feed charge to the battery pack. The upgraded eTorque version of the Pentastar V6 is the standard engine in most trim levels. It is specifically tuned for truck duty and rated at 305 hp and 269 lbs.-ft. of torque. This newest version features advanced technologies, such as wide range
variable valve timing and twostep variable valve lift.
DETROIT DD8 ENTERS PRODUCTION Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) announced the start of vehicle production with the Detroit DD8 engine. The DD8 will be available for Freightliner M2 106, 108SD and 114SD truck models. The DD8 complements the DD5 engine for medium-duty and vocational markets. It will be manufactured at the same facility as the DD13, DD15 and DD16 engines, as well as the DT12 automated manual transmission and Detroit axles. “A big differentiator for the Detroit brand is the Detroit Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostics system, which is available as standard on both the DD5 and DD8 engines,” says Brian Daniels, manager, Detroit Powertrain and Component Product Marketing. “Virtual Technician helps fleets make informed service decisions within minutes of an engine or aftertreatment fault event, increasing uptime.” According to DTNA, the DD8’s maintenance intervals are up to three times longer than the competition. One feature designed with the vocational market in mind is variable exhaust cam phasing, used at low engine

INTERNATIONAL REPLACES DURASTAR International Trucks launched the Class 6/7 MV Series at the 2018 Work Truck Show. The MV Series features an improved cab design, along with the same driver-centric enhancements already launched in Class 8 vehicles. The MV Series features new cab doors with a lower bottom glass edge and removed vent window, giving the driver a single large piece of glass to look through, improving side visibility and reducing blind spots. By reshaping the doors and side glass, the position of the optional pedestal mirrors is optimized so drivers turn their heads less, reducing neck strain, and keep their eyes on the road. A premium gauge cluster with a customizable digital driver display has been added to give drivers real-time monitoring of vehicle operation and other important alerts. The display also offers up to 15 customizable digital gauges. The flat-panel dash contains space for up to 30 customizable switches.
A column-mounted stalk shifter is integrated to help keep drivers’ hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. The stalk shifter placement and the lower instrument panel design improve leg room, especially at the knee. Like all International models, the MV Series can be managed digitally through the OnCommand Connection platform. It features the company’s Advanced Remote Diagnostics system designed to enhance fleet efficiency, as well as Over-TheAir (OTA) programming through the nine-pin OnCommand LINK device. OTA enables drivers or fleet managers to utilize a mobile interface to initiate authorized engine programming at the customer’s facility over a safe, secure Wi-Fi connection. The MV Series is available in Regular Cab, Extended Cab and Crew Cab versions with a choice of a Cummins B6.7 or L9 engine. The standard transmission is the Allison 1000 HS automatic with Allison FuelSense 2.0; DynActive Shifting is an available option. The company is taking orders and market availability is Spring 2018. Navistar also expanded its International HV Series. “The new HV507 and HV607

package is a Volvo D13 engine with 500 hp and 1,850 lbs.-ft. of torque, paired with the company’s 13- or 14-speed I-Shift with Crawler Gears automated manual transmission. The trucks are also available with up to 605 hp and 2,050 lbs.-ft. of torque provided by a Cummins X15 Performance Series engine and paired with an Eaton Ultra Shift Plus or manual transmission. Volvo Enhanced Stability Technology (VEST), an electronic stability control system, is standard on all VNX models. By continually monitoring operating parameters, VEST detects imminent loss of control, jackknife or rollover events. The system automatically reduces engine torque and selectively applies braking to help the driver keep the truck on course. All VNX models come standard with Volvo’s factoryinstalled connectivity hardware for access to remote diagnostics. The same hardware also allows customers to perform software and parameter updates over-theair with Remote Programming.
MACK TRUCKS EXPANDS MACK MDRIVE HD CAPABILITIES Mack Trucks introduced splitshaft functionality for its Mack mDRIVE HD automated manual transmission (AMT), giving customers with high-demand PTO needs a fully integrated solution. Instead of taking power from an engine- or transmissionmounted PTO, split-shaft PTOs are mounted in the middle of the driveline to receive output directly from the transmission, supplying more torque for auxiliary equipment such as large concrete pumps, vacuum body or high-pressure liquid transfer
applications. While the splitshaft PTO is engaged, power to the axles is disconnected. The split-shaft functionality is standard on all 12-, 13- and 14-speed mDRIVE HD AMTs and can be activated by a Mack dealer. In addition, all GHG2017 F-Series mDRIVE HD AMTs can be reprogrammed with split-shaft functionality with assistance from the Mack Body Builder Support Group. Mack Trucks announced enhancements to its Mack Granite Medium Heavy Duty (MHD) model, as well, which expand its application coverage. They include an additional horsepower rating, new underframe exhaust system, shorter wheelbase 4x2 configuration and a tractor configuration. Equipped with a Cummins L9 engine, the MHD now offers a lower horsepower option that allows customers to spec an engine with 330 hp and up to 1,000 ft.-lbs. of torque. The lower horsepower rating offers customers another option to increase their ROI. A new under-frame exhaust gives customers more options for body adaptation. The MHD model can be spec’d as a Class 7 or 8 vehicle, is offered in either an axle back or axle forward configuration and is available as a 4x2 or 6x4. An axle back tractor option meets the needs of light tractor applications requiring maneuverability, flexibility and durability without extra weight. A shorter wheelbase is also available for the MHD model in the 4x2 configuration. It is optimal for the 10-ft. dump body commonly used in municipal applications. ET

Behind The Basics of GENERATOR SELECTION A review of the fundamentals that go into selecting mobile generators to power your jobsites.
T
here are a number of things to consider when selecting a mobile generator for your application. The jobsite, required capacity and generator features are among those items to consider in order to make an informed and profitable decision. “In most cases, rental centers and equipment dealers can provide excellent guidance for customers looking to rent or buy a generator,” states Brian Northway, product manager, Allmand Bros. Inc. “Their suggestions, however, are only as useful as the information they’re provided. Only with a comprehensive understanding of the equipment a customer will be powering, along with any other job-specific factors, can they determine the ideal generator.” Clayton Costello, operations manager at CK Power, agrees, noting, “Because jobsite applications vary so widely, mobile generator selection should be taken on a case-by-case basis. A small commercial remodel, for example, will require a much different mobile generator than a big bridge refurbishment or road construction job.” While some jobs may require a unit capable of handling significant surge loads, others may call for the ability to switch frequency or run on an external fuel supply. “The most important factor to consider — and the most common mistake that individuals make — is selecting a unit that doesn’t match the power required for the job,” Northway cautions.
“That’s why it’s so important to work closely with your supplier in order to select the mobile generator that best fits your jobsite’s particular requirements,” Costello emphasizes. “If needed, some suppliers can even customize a genset with the necessary load requirements, safety precautions and innovative features you need to be successful day in and day out.”
SIZE IT TO DEMAND When it comes to generators, it’s important to pay careful attention to sizing. “An under-sized generator, or one too small to handle the load, will place strain on the unit and cause a shutdown or, at worst, damage to the unit,” says Todd Howe, global generator products manager, Doosan Portable Power. “A generator that is too large for the load will eventually result in ‘wet stacking,’ or a carbon buildup in the engine, causing a power loss.” According to Costello, a generator should have a rated and maximum output just high
Many generators offer the ability to switch between 50- and 60-Hz frequencies to accommodate different equipment. enough to support the application. Rated output is the number of watts the machine can produce for an indefinite period of time, while maximum output is typically viewed as the highest number of watts the generator can produce for brief periods. To determine power requirements, list the combined wattage of all the equipment you will be loading onto the genset by both the power required to start the equipment and the power needed to run it. The sum total of the running power is the generator’s
required rated output. The sum total for starting power is the maximum output required. “Take those numbers and add a 10% buffer as a safety precaution,” Costello advises. “If you choose a genset that doesn’t meet the demands of its application, the generator will fail to power your site adequately and wear out faster.”
IDEALLY, A GENERATOR SHOULD HAVE ENOUGH POWER TO RUN EVERYTHING AT A SITE, BUT NOT SO MUCH THAT IT WILL BE RUNNING SIGNIFICANTLY BELOW ITS RATED LOAD CAPACITY.”
To get maximum productivity, choose a generator that meets your jobsite’s load requirements at 100% throughout a typical workday.

A generator should have a rated and maximum output high enough to fully support the application.
OTHER SELECTION CRITERIA
★
Here are some other common factors to consider when choosing a generator for your jobsites.
POWER CHOICE However, it’s important not to build too large a buffer, since having more power than needed can be detrimental. “Ideally, a generator should have enough power to run everything at a site, but not so much that it will be running significantly below its rated load capacity,” Northway states. Diesel generators operated below 50% to 60% capacity are at risk of wet stacking. To minimize this risk, some contractors may opt to run two smaller generators in parallel. Paralleling is when two or more generators are electrically coupled together using special equipment to form a larger capacity power source. If the two generators are the same size, it effectively doubles the power output. “The basic premise behind paralleling is to take two generators and connect them together in such a way that they combine their output to make a theoretically bigger generator,” says Howe. “This provides workers the option of shutting down one unit to adjust for demand,” Northway points out. “Although this may increase initial costs, it can deliver savings for some jobs by reducing downtime and improving application flexibility.”
generator’s flexibility. “A surge of power is required as equipment starts and then the power need tapers off as equipment runs normally. An AVR helps ensure the output voltage remains consistent, even under varying loads as you start and turn off your equipment throughout the workday,” Costello indicates. If the generator will frequently be used to start large motors with variable loads, Northway also recommends a model with a heavy-duty, oversized alternator. This will ensure sufficient power to start large motors without surging.
FUEL CAPACITY Runtime refers to the amount of time a generator can run before refueling. “In general, you’ll want to choose a generator that meets your jobsite’s load requirements at 100% throughout a typical workday,” Costello advises. “Anything beyond that is extra. Anything less, and you’re losing precious work time while your crew stands around [waiting] for the generator to be refueled.” For situations where more time between fuel fills is needed, generators are available equipped with large fuel tanks and offering runtimes exceeding 24 hours. There are also generators capable of switching from the onboard fuel source to an external one. “Drawing from an external source can drastically extend runtime compared to units that are limited to an onboard fuel supply,” Northway comments. “While this option is available from many manufacturers, some have made it standard, while others do not offer it at all.” Another option worth consideration is an automatic fuel priming system. “This system allows the operator to simply turn the key back to start and the system will prime itself,” Northway points out. “Although no one plans to run a generator completely out of fuel, it does happen, and having a selfpriming generator can cut downtime significantly.” ET
IN GENERAL, YOU’LL WANT TO CHOOSE A GENERATOR THAT MEETS YOUR JOBSITE’S LOAD REQUIREMENTS AT 100% THROUGHOUT A TYPICAL WORKDAY.”
ADJUSTABLE OUTPUT Although a generator’s primary purpose is to deliver electricity, multiple output settings can increase its versatility. “Units equipped with a frequency switch are beneficial if the generator will be used with both 50- and 60-Hz equipment,” notes Northway. “Many generators can switch between both frequencies to accommodate different equipment. Similarly, generators that offer multiple voltage settings, as well as the ability to switch between singleand three-phase electric power, provide owners and operators with improved versatility.” An automatic voltage regulator (AVR) can further expand the

ET0418_37-39_PowerSources_CB.indd 39
Diesel-powered generators continue to be the most prevalent due to the common fuel source with most equipment on site. However, models such as Doosan’s gasoline-powered C-185 and VP900 electric portable generator have made inroads in certain applications. Other power options tend to find use where fuel is more application specific. “Using natural gas is commonplace in oil and gas sectors where fuel comes directly from the wellhead,” Todd Howe, Doosan Portable Power, notes. “In North Dakota, West Texas and Oklahoma, 60% to 70% of generator fleets are powered by natural gas.”
LOCATION
“Some commercial and residential areas have strict noise control regulations, and you need to make sure you abide by them,” CK Power’s Clayton Costello emphasizes. “Industry standard for the sound level on a generator is about 70 dBA heard at 23 ft. Most generators meet this standard, but depending on the location or application of your jobsite, you may require a generator with more sound attenuation.” Site contamination can also be a concern in some areas. “Certain locations require extra precautions be taken to prevent the risk of site contamination,” Brian Northway, Allmand Bros., points out. “When working at a site with strict guidelines, look for a unit with an internal leakage reservoir. Some provide full fluid containment with a reservoir capable of holding more than 100% of the system’s total volume, ensuring there is no risk of environmental damage.”

MAINTAINABILITY Consider a generator with curbside maintenance access. “This increases accessibility for maintenance by plumbing all fluids and service points to the curbside,” Northway explains. To further improve accessibility, many models come with large side access doors. “These large doors, combined with the benefits of having all service points located on one side, help simplify maintenance,” Northway states, “and reduce the amount of time spent working on the unit.”

SCRAPERS SHAVE $1 MILLION on Lagoon Projects E
arth Max Construction, a contracting company in Stony Mountain, Manitoba, Canada, is gaining ground in a niche earthmoving market working for rural municipalities’ public works departments. Initially moving dirt with an excavator top loading into a 40-ton articulated dump truck, Earth Max has shifted its methods, and equipment, to enhance productivity. “We bought our first scraper about six years ago,” says Randal Dueck, Earth Max construction project manager. “It was a used K-Tec scraper and it has worked fantastic for us. We liked it so much that we decided to buy a few more.” This purchase included two new K-Tec 1233 models, each of which holds a 33-cu.-yd. heaped capacity. The acquisition changed Earth Max’s operations. Working conditions are less than ideal in the sticky gumbo clay of the Red
River Valley, and even more so when unexpected torrential rains hit. “With the scrapers vs. hauling with a rock truck, we get to go in a lot wetter conditions. We don’t rut up the clay nearly as much, so we can haul a lot more clay without making a mess,” says Dueck. “The efficiency is also a lot higher, as we only have one machine running vs. two on an excavator load.” The performance of the earthmoving systems has had a direct impact on the contracts Earth Max has been awarded — and the future of two rural communities.
SUBSTANTIAL COST CUT In 2017, Earth Max performed earthwork for a pair of lagoon projects awarded by rural municipalities in southern Manitoba. The pond-like bodies of water are constructed to receive, hold and treat wastewater for a predetermined time period. Situated in the rural municipality of Morris, the Lowe Farm lagoon expansion project required construction of a new

LOW-MAINTENANCE DESIGN Production capacity isn’t the only contributor to fast project completion. Earth Max’s Randal Dueck also sees benefits from the serviceability of the scrapers. “There is hardly anything to service on the scrapers. We grease them regularly and they go to work,” he states. “The guys at the shop look through them once a year and that is it. There’s never anything that breaks on them.” Having only two daily grease points makes a difference in productivity, as well. Instead of searching for numerous grease points, operators are able to move more dirt, which helps contractors like Earth Max get ahead of projected schedules.

The scrapers provide the flotation to work in the sticky gumbo clay found in Manitoba’s Red River Valley. This allows Earth Max to operate in wetter conditions.
RAIN DOESN’T SLOW SECOND LAGOON PROJECT Another lagoon project in St. Pierre required 196,000 cu. yds. of earthwork to double the lagoon capacity, allowing for a capacity of 150 additional homes, or 2,000 residents. This project included construction of a new secondary cell and a wetland cell.
Earthwork activities were comprised of topsoil stripping, stockpiling, excavation, embankment and dyke removal. Earth Max started the project in May 2017. Although higher rain amounts were encountered, the flotation of the scrapers enabled the contractor to work most days and complete the project in July. “We’ve been on a development
freeze going on five years, so there has been very limited new construction in the community,” says Mona Fallis, Mayor of the Village of St. Pierre. “The lagoon expansion allows us to approve and expand new developments and subdivisions. Commercial construction can now move ahead, so this is a huge benefit for our community.” ET

Lowe Farm lagoon project as well as the second lowest bidder exclusively use scrapers manufactured by K-Tec Earthmovers,” he added. As the project progressed, the projected cost was revised down to $905,000. In the end, the actual cost was $442,000, with Earth Max’s earthmoving efficiency providing substantial cost savings. By shaving more than $1 million off the initial project estimates, the rural municipality is now able to tackle more public works projects, offering greater value to the community’s tax dollars.

BUSHWACKERS TACKLES VEGETATION at Army Ammunition Depot Bushwackers Land Clearing uses its fleet of mulchers to tame overgrowth on the heavily wooded site.
T
he McAlester Army Ammunition Plant sits on 45,000 heavily wooded acres in southeast Oklahoma, and is one of the Army’s premier bomb and warhead-loading facilities. While the munitions produced there defend the country abroad, the depot itself faces an unlikely enemy at home: vegetation growing out of its boundaries and threatening to overtake the area. Lucky for Uncle Sam, the Army drafted Bushwackers Land Clearing LLC, a local contractor armed with a fleet of versatile mulchers, including Fecon FTX128 tracked mulchers. Its mission is simple: to tame the vegetation and retake the depot.
MULCHING MAINTAINS SIGHTLINES, REDUCES FIRE RISK At McAlester, there are hundreds of bunkers housing munition storage, each arranged symmetrically in rows called magazines. Each bunker has a round top, like an earth-covered igloo, with the slope of the roof varying from 60% to 100%. Bushwackers is tasked with clearing the overgrown brush and vegetation from encroaching on the bunkers. Gullies and washes with steep banks also have to be cleared. The vegetation is a mixture of brush, trees

CUTTING THEIR TEETH When Bushwackers first purchased the Fecon rotor heads, the only available options were carbide hammers or self-sharpening Samurai knives. Arthur chose to mix and match teeth: carbide on the outside two-thirds and Samurai on the interior third of the rotor. The carbide hammers have a long lifespan, but pulverize rather than cut. The Samurai teeth have a shorter lifespan but are more efficient at cutting.
the Viking knives are designed to be sharpened by the user. Like the Samurai knives, the Viking blades cut the wood rather than smashing it. Bushwackers’ operators sharpen the knives after every 10 hours of use, which takes about two minutes per tooth. Yet, the knives last 150 to 200 hours, produce a finer mulch product and use less horsepower.

By Joanne Nikolski BRIDGING THE GAP
Use Mentorships to ATTRACT YOUNG CONSTRUCTION TALENT There are several features of mentorship programs that make them unique from internships and apprenticeships.
T
he Baby Boomer generation is defined as those born roughly between 1946 and 1964. That means that today, this generation is between the ages of 53 and 71, and they are retiring at a rate of 10,000 people per day. Given these statistics, guiding new graduates into the construction industry has never been more important. Within 10 years, the Baby Boomers will be completely in retirement mode. All types of construction companies will find themselves saddled with work and without anyone skilled enough to do it. To prevent skills gaps from impacting your company when your talented construction professionals retire, it’s crucial to start investing in emerging talent today.
CHANGE YOUR RECRUITING STRATEGIES For workers from the Baby Boomer and Generation X groups, work was primarily about improving their lives with career advancement, personal prestige and money. They defined competitive salaries, comprehensive benefits and opportunities for financial growth as the most important criteria when deciding whether to take or stay with a job. For Millennials, who now occupy the majority of the workforce, and their Generation Z cohorts who follow them, those things are still important, but they’re no longer the most important considerations. Instead, these generations place a premium on the ability to make a difference in their organization and in the world. Tap into that desire to make a difference, and shift your recruitment strategies from focusing

that talent. You may already have certain entry-level development practices within your company, but there are several features of mentorship programs that make them unique from (and, in some ways, superior to) internship and

MENTORSHIP VS. INTERNSHIP/ APPRENTICESHIP Once you have positioned your company to attract fresh talent, it is important to understand the different ways in which you can invest in and develop

A great mentorship program benefits your company culture as much as it benefits the individual participants.
apprenticeship programs. Internships and apprenticeships tend to be standardized, and are designed toward one specific goal. For example, interns may receive college credit and a generalized introduction to the workforce, while apprentices tend to earn certifications or other technical designations. On the other hand, mentorships can be very customized and flexible. They can be adjusted to suit a particular mentee’s goals and learning style, and they do not
have a fixed end date. Mentor/ mentee relationships can last throughout the duration of a mentee’s career, including after a mentor has retired. In a mentorship situation, the mentor and mentee connect one on one, which strengthens the personal relationship and allows for low-pressure, high-value conversations. In addition, unlike an internship or apprenticeship program, mentorship programs benefit both the mentor and mentee in equal measure. While mentees gain insights into the construction industry and grow their networks and skill sets with the help of experienced workers, we have seen time and time again that those experienced workers are eager to mentor and coach incoming talent. They understand that without passing on their wisdom and experience to a new generation of workers, that knowledge could all be lost. Mentees can also provide help with new technologies and bring fresh perspectives to old problems. By pairing up talented Baby Boomers with eager new workers, you provide each of them with opportunities for growth and express confidence in their respective unique abilities.
BUILD OR IMPROVE YOUR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM As important as recruiting high-potential talent is, it does not have to be complicated. Challenge each of your workers who are heading toward retirement to find a mentee, and open the challenge to the rest of your organization. Whether they’re looking within their own families or considering potential candidates from shared volunteer opportunities or neighborhoods, you’ll be surprised by how many employees might know recent or soon-to-be graduates who are looking for excellent long-term career opportunities. Reach out within those networks and implement the new recruiting strategies you’ve developed. You can also connect with

Once you identify and attract potential mentees, make sure that you are very strategic as you pair them with a mentor. You know your workforce well. Have a frank, open discussion with the

be a good fit to coach them. You want their communication styles to be compatible, but you also want to consider what each person can learn from the other. For example, say you have a mentee who is technologically advanced and who has an excellent work ethic, but who struggles interpersonally and worries about their ability to network well and communicate effectively in the workplace. Pair them with a strong communicator within your organization who is recognized as a respected leader but who may not have as much expertise on the technical side of the construction industry. Mentors and mentees should be in regular contact, especially at first. Encourage a minimum of one weekly meeting where they can discuss what is going well, find opportunities for improvement and build their relationship consistently. As the relationship develops, they may work out their own meeting times and communicate differently; but at the outset, a regular schedule will help build the habit of staying in touch. It is also important to ask for regular feedback from all participants in the program. Set up an anonymous feedback system that will allow you to gauge how effectively you are matching your mentor/mentee sets, how supported each person feels and how you can improve your program to serve everyone’s needs better. After all, a great mentorship program benefits your company culture as much as it benefits the individual participants. Companies are using mentorship programs to provide lifelong skills and relationships to up-and-coming construction professionals. It is paying off as they strengthen their organizations and eliminate the threat of a skills gap as their experienced workers leave the workforce. ET

Convince Workers to Stay by

Options such as profit sharing and ESOPs can set your business apart from others competing in a tight labor market.
I
t is truly wonderful when business is good. You can pay down some bills and have extra bucks to repair or replace needed equipment. Pay down bank loans. Pass out some bonuses. Take a vacation. Put some money in your retirement accounts. But then reality sets in. The business is there in front of you, but you don’t have the personnel to do the work in a profitable, efficient manner. So what do you have to do to attract people to your company and convince them to stay the course? It’s the “convincing” part that gets tough because you are competing with every other contractor out there for worker services. As such, your convincing has to be better than that being offered by the competition, but not to the extent where it puts you in the poor house. So how do you get there? There are two ways based on what I’m seeing out there: 1. Improve your employee benefit plan offerings 2. Make your employees your partner (don’t panic; there is a win-win solution) Both suggestions are employee benefit plans. The first is pretty easy to do. The second is more involved, but in addition to being an employee benefit, it helps shareholders get money off the table as part of the implementation (win-win).
GIVE THEM A SHARE IN THE PROFIT When it comes to upgrading your benefit plan, you can start by improving the services and information for managing retirement money. Most companies have a 401(k) program where employees provide most of the funding along with whatever match the employer provides. I also suggest you consider a profit-sharing plan to increase your standing with both potential recruits and existing employees. If the contributions are large enough, you can stretch the vesting and be almost assured that employees will stay, especially if such plans are not available at other potential employers. This is the partnering piece of the puzzle, because the contributions should mirror profitability. If you have a good year, the contribution is larger. Both the 401(k) and profit-sharing plans are reviewed and managed by the IRS. This means there are annual compliance requirements, tax report filings, reporting requirements, investment decisions and fiduciary liability issues if you manage the plans on your own. One option that is gaining popularity is the Multiple Employer Plan (MEP), which allows small employers to band together to obtain more favorable plan investment results and more efficient and less expensive management services. MEPs take all the work off of your shoulders; place you in a large, powerful group in a unified plan; and provide the advantages of a standalone sponsor with avoidance of the expenses and administrative burden of a single employee plan. The bottom line is a sophisticated plan to manage retirement benefits without the headaches and cost of managing it yourself. If you wish to focus on certain levels of management or individuals, you can use various forms of deferred comp, also with vesting schedules to keep the golden handcuffs in force. If you need someone to help you devise a plan or plans that will work for your business, one option is Tal Diekvoss, Fiduciary Management Group, who has experience working with contractors, equipment dealers and rental companies. He can be reached at (920) 318-1007 or tdiekvoss@fiduciarymg.com.

ESOP BENEFITS I have seen the advantages of ESOPs for equipment dealers and rental companies. Yet, the more I got into the subject, the more construction firms I came across using them as an employee benefit plan. I had to ask around to find out why ESOPs are so popular with contractors. In an ESOP transaction, shareholders sell their stock or equity to the ESOP for fair market value. The shares owned by the ESOP are then allocated to employees based on compensation levels. Over a 10- to 15-year time period, the shares have the ability to gain value, which in turn is transferred to the employee-owned shares. Upon retirement, the employee vested benefits are paid out to the employee over a period of time. Contractors find ESOPs attractive because they provide a venue where ownership can get fair market value for their investment. They are attractive because it is difficult to sell a construction business to another contractor for the price an owner feels it’s worth. Nonowner employees of the company, on the other hand, who know its strengths and weaknesses, would be willing to carry on the business activities in exchange for getting a piece of the action via the ESOP. What is great for the employees is there is no cost to get this opportunity. They just do their job and generate profits and cash flow. It’s not a short-term investment, but one that can be quite lucrative in the long run. Contractor employees of an ESOP have all told me they are quite satisfied with the results. Of course, there are no guarantees — the company has to continue to be profitable to make it work. Before we get carried away, I have to tell you that an ESOP requires a clean set of books, clean balance sheet, equity in the business, profits and cash flow. If you don’t have these, it will be difficult to get a deal done.
SEMINAR PROVIDES A CHANCE TO LEARN MORE Because I know the value of ESOPs, I also know there is limited knowledge about them in the marketplace. That’s why I have asked a few friends to sponsor a one-day ESOP Employee Benefit Seminar on May 30, 2018, in Chicago. The purpose of the seminar is twofold: 1. to introduce you to ESOPs and other tools to help with recruitment and retention of employees, and 2. to help you refrain from a painful financial situation related to starting an ESOP process if you should not be doing so. Wintrust Commercial Banking and its national ESOP Practice Group will be the host and a sponsor of the event, along with CSG Partners and Fiduciary Management Group. Wintrust has a Contractor Division, which makes its participation a plus. CSG Partners is the ESOP expert, Tal Diekvoss will represent Fiduciary Management Group and I will walk you through the process and what to expect along the way. Wintrust Commercial Banking is next to O’Hare Airport and thus quite convenient for a one-day program. If you’re interested in attending, you can register online at info. csgpartners.com/esop-summit.html. For any questions, give me a call at (708) 347-9109 or email me at gbartecki@comcast.net. ET
