MODE

Letter from the Editor As I entered my senior year at Fordham University, I reflected back on my time here and all the memories I have made thus far. This issue and the next issue of MODE Magazine will be my very last mark on my college years. I am not a fan of change, but lately I realized that life evolves and you should grow with it. This issue of MODE is different from past ones, it features new faces and talents from underclassmen. Our Fall/Winter 2018 cover features Andre Guthrie (GSB ‘19), who is known around campus for his positive outlook on life. He is a student-athlete on Track & Field and is on the e-board of ASILI (The Black Student Alliance at Fordham). In this issue, we also have a lifestyle article about Fordham’s very own jewelry designer, Natalie Commesso. Our beauty section features an all-you-need to know article on eyelash extensions. Lastly, we have a fashion piece regarding the dangers of fast fashion. This issue of MODE demonstrates the talent of the Fordham community. This upcoming year is all about featuring people that make the world brighter and more positive, as it can feel a bit heavy in today’s society. I hope you stay tuned on this journey with us!

Mad About Plaid Audrey Johnson

It’s everywhere now. You see it on the streets, in store windows, on Instagram, and hopefully in your closet. It’s plaid.

Over the past few years, plaid has become a major staple of street fashion. However, the pattern actually dates back to the 1500s, when the Scottish used it to distinguish clans and geographical regions from each other. Later, in the early 1900s, a Midwest company known as Woolrich Woolen Mills gave plaid a popularity boost when they created a distinctive red and black checkered pattern known as “Buffalo Plaid.” This trend of wearing plaid quickly became a staple amongst outdoor professions as well. In the 1980s, plaid became

6

popular not only because of famous movies like Heathers and St. Elmo’s Fire but also because of public figures like the beloved Princess Diana. Moreover, these pop culture moments gave plaid a preppy feel and attracted more and more people to this bold pattern. For instance, the 1990s brought with it the rise of the flannel-shirted grunge era. Because of this phase, fashion owes one of the most iconic outfits of all time to the 90s era: Cher’s yellow plaid set from Clueless. Given the ongoing history of plaid, it’ll always be a classic staple no matter what century. Today, the new phase of plaid is now pants and sets. They’re the hottest pieces in street style right now and were rocked by many influencers during fall’s New York Fashion Week. Everyone from Gigi Hadid to Harry Styles has been spotted wearing plaid. Because of this new era of plaid and the influence of many celebrities,

this pattern is in every fast fashion store. If you walked into Urban Outfitters tomorrow, you can be sure that you’d find more than a few plaid items. However, what’s unique about this trend is that it’s unisex. Most of the time trends are separated by gender, but plaid works for everyone and anyone. Given its loud and hard to match patterns, plaid might at first seem like a daunting pattern to add to your wardrobe, but anyone can rock it. Today, plaid pants, black platform Doc Martens, and a solid color t-shirt is a go-to outfit for many college students. If you’re feeling extra bold, wearing a plaid set is a fashion-forward move, especially here in New York City. Though plaid has only recently come back into style, it’s been a staple for a long time in the fashion world. This pattern is a classic that we will always circle back to, and for good reason.

Checks

If you’re someone who stays updated on the constantly-evolving fashion cult that is streetwear, you’ve probably noticed the rise of the street style alpha-dog: Nike. Surely it’s no Over secret that Nike is one of the most recognized and respected brands of this century. Nike clothing dominates everything from tennis courts and football fields to the bustling city streets; but what is it that makes the swoosh so unshakable? Some fans say it’s Nike’s highly By Zoë Mader sought-after collaborations, like the crisp Comme des Garçons Converse or the Travis Scott Air Force 1s, that keep the brand on top. Others attest that it’s because of the famous faces, like Drake and Bella Hadid, who rep the Nike check. But in reality, Nike is at the top of its game because of nonstop trailblazing. The most acclaimed instance of Nike’s habitual trendsetting is its ongoing collaboration with the exalted Virgil Abloh, creator of the brand Off-White, and his recreation of “The Ten.”

Stripes

Using his background of architecture and modern aesthetic, Abloh ripped up ten of Nike’s classic silhouettes, such as the Air Max 97 and Air Jordan 1, and remodeled them into industrial, cutting-edge kicks. Since this hype release came out in 2017, it has yet to die out. Given the combination of two clout-heavy brands like Off-White and Nike, coupled with the fame that Abloh has acquired, there’s no surprise that the two have been so successful in collaboration. Nonetheless, this market wouldn’t exist without competition. As any hypebeast or streetwear guru knows, Kanye West’s Yeezy industry is under Adidas, which leads to some serious tension among these top tier brands. Although Adidas has representation in streetwear’s upper echelons, like the Yeezy label and celebrity influencers like Pharrell and Kendall Jenner, some critics believe that the brand still falls short of Nike’s level. With that being said, when Drake raps, “checks over stripes” over Travis Scott’s hit “SICKO MODE,” are you with it or against it? 7

Gimme, Gimme: Designer Names Without Breaking the Bank By Katie Konfino

Gucci, Christian Dior, Celine, Balenciaga, Prada, Chanel, Fendi, Saint Laurent, and Louis Vuitton. If you are ‘designer’ drooling right now, but know that you can’t afford to purchase these brands, then keep reading. Se Lunis is a clothing brand that provides a playful way for young people to show off the brand names they know and love. Alongside the brand name is a cartoon character or image that takes the customer back to their youth. As mentioned on their website, shopselunis.com, the Se Lunis T-Shirts were inspired by the bootlegs on Canal Street in New York’s Chinatown. The brand offers both women and men the opportunity to sport their favorite designer without breaking the bank. The average shirt costs $45, which is better than the designer cost of $590. One of the brand’s most popular designs is the “Gucci Casper” T-Shirt, which has been worn by reality television star Kourtney Kardashian. Also, their “POWERADA” T-Shirt that features the Powerpuff Girls and the brand name Prada is extremely popular. If you are looking to save money in college, while also staying up with the current trends, think of purchasing a Se Lunis T-Shirt. For style inspirations take a look at my favorite ways to rock the shirts in the cooler temperatures! Special thanks to:

Fordham’s Secret Fashion Community

By Mary Kate Flock

Fashion is all around Fordham’s campus. We see it on the way to class, on the weekends, in our fashion clubs, and in the Fordham Fashion Studies curriculum. But what if I told you there’s a secret fashion community here at Fordham? It’s a community that I myself am involved in, and yet still didn’t know was so expansive. I am proud and excited to introduce you to Fordham’s secret fashion community: college fashionista (cf), a Gen Z-driven digital community for fashion and beauty influencers. This community, under the Clique Brands umbrella (Who What Wear, MyDomaine, Byrdie) has access to fashion industry experts through video lessons, conferences, and networking events. In addition, the website offers opportunities for “community members” to write, submit photographs, and market the company on their campuses. As a community member at college fashionista for eight semesters, I can honestly say that the network you will gain from joining this company is unreal. I’ve attended conferences with industry speakers

who work for powerhouses like Vogue and Dolce & Gabbana. It’s a platform for students across the world to share their love of education, in addition to gaining once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to give yourself an edge upon entering the job market. On the college fashionista Instagram, you can easily tell the type of girls with whom this company connects. Fordham has over 50 (yes, 50!) community members, who all share a love of fashion and of all the opportunities that this incredible city has to offer. Upon meeting the Fordham community members, I noticed how distinct and unique each of their styles is. Take Chloe Felopulos, a sophomore at Fordham LC, for example; Chloe has

a love for all things thrifted and sustainable. Her cheetah print crop top is a pillowcase that she cut up and repurposed to be a top. Emily O’Brien, a former intern at cf headquarters and a sophomore at Fordham LC is daring and bold in her pink jumpsuit. college fashionista inspires students to think outside of the box. In addition, it connects you with students at your school who you may have never even seen on campus before. The cf community has been instrumental in connecting the Lincoln Center campus with Rose Hill, bridging a gap between the two Fordham campuses that can seem incredibly separated. Uniting the Fordham community digitally around a love of fashion, culture, beauty, and career aspirations has been one of the most inspiring and rewarding components of my experience with college fashionista. If you’re looking to join the #gurugang, be sure to apply at collegefashionista. com and join Fordham fashion’s best-kept secret.

Ugly Fashion By Lauren Kelly

If you’ve been keeping up with fashion on Instagram this past summer, you might have noticed some strange trends arise. You’ve probably seen some unusual footwear on celebrities like Bella Hadid, the Kardashians, or Ariana Grande. You know, those shoes with a kind of orthopedic vibe? Yup, I’m talking about the big white chunky sneaker. They’ve moved from nursing homes to the runway. Big designers like Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton are showing these statement sneakers on runways, especially with “street style” looks. As the popularity of these shoes has risen, so have the prices. Most chunky sneakers made by top designers can be upwards of $800. Gucci recently designed a pair that sells for $1,500. Other brands are taking advantage of this trend by making cheaper versions of these shoes. Adidas’s “dad” shoes go for about $100. This “ugly” trend is still going strong, and now includes some funky, colorful pairs, particularly by Balenciaga. But ugly shoes are not the only odd trend circulating in the fashion world. Let’s get right to the point: the fanny pack. Was it ever cool? Debatable. Is it cool now? It’s high fashion. This trend has been big for a couple years now, due to the new designs and, obviously, because top models started wearing them. They aren’t just for tourists now; they’re actually cute and fashionable. Newly designed fanny packs don’t really look like “packs.” Rather, they resemble waist purses/ wallets. Similar to chunky

10

sneakers, top designers are making versions of the fanny packs that sell for $800 and up. Designer brands like Gucci and Prada refer to these packs by the much classier name of “belt bags.” This “handsfree” trend is evolving from being worn around the waist to being worn across the body. Brands like Guess and Gucci showcase their belt bags worn around the model’s body, looking more like a cross-body purse. I think if the fanny pack, or belt bag, has made through so many decades, it will always be a popular staple in the fashion world. Although both of these trends aren’t considered “ugly” at this point in time, this is the first time they’ve been considered high fashion. So why exactly are these items trending? I believe that it all has to do with comfort and convenience. Athleisure has been super popular, especially in NYC, and both the chunky sneaker and the fanny pack are athleisure evolving. No one wants to wear high heels all the time; why not look taller and slimmer with a big platform sneaker instead? In the same way, no one wants to keep all their belongings in their pockets, but it’s difficult to strut down the street with a big purse on your shoulder. The fanny pack is versatile and hands-free, making it the perfect pouch. Personally, I can get behind the fanny pack. The chunky sneakers? It might take me some time. These trends will continue to evolve, and I’m excited to see where the fashion industry takes them.

Hispanic Heritage Fashion

By Monica Santiago

When people think of Latin style, they think of hot, tropical colors that reflect a vibrant culture. However, the Latin American culture is multi-dimensional, with roots extending across three continents and four centuries. This article celebrates the origins and growth of Hispanic heritage, which has influenced the fashion industry on a global scale. Since many Latin countries are influenced by Spanish culture, it is only right to start in Spain itself. The styles of the Matadors in Spanish bullfighting and the dresses of the flamenco dancers were prominent fashion statements. Meant for ease of motion and protection from getting caught on bull’s horns, the matador jacket and its adornments serve as an inspiration for today’s bolero jackets. The ruffles and the guitar-shaped silhouette of the flamenco dress were meant to capture the flow of the women’s movement. Whether asymmetric, layered, or A-lined, flamenco dresses influence today’s blouses, skirts, and dresses, from casual clothing to high fashion. Cropped jackets and ruffles are two elegant style elements that flow in and out of fashion trends, leaving imprints on the global fashion arena. Spain has also influenced our current fashion industry through the extravagant Balenciaga brand, as well as the clothing store Zara. With the reputation of distributing good-quality clothing, Zara showcases ready-to-wear clothing, accessories, perfumes, shoes, and more. The flamenco dress has prominent ruffles influenced the pollera dress. The pollera is the traditional dress that dates back to the 20th century when slavery was prevalent in various parts of Latin American. Many countries in the Caribbean and in South America, including Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, and Panama, each have their own way of styling the pollera. For example, in Puerto Rico, the dress is either all white, white with pops of color on the head wrap, or white with floral adornments. In El Salvador, the dress is sometimes multicolored, but it is usually white and blue, the same colors as the Salvadoran flag. In Panama, polleras traditionally have a white base and intricate detailing in different colors. Though each country has their own variation of the pollera and different ways to accessorize them, all polleras have ruffles and large, flowy skirts. These

gowns influence today’s trend of white peasant tops and white dresses. Along with this current trend, modern fashion designer Stella Nolasco uses her Puerto Rican culture as her main inspiration when creating her fashion lines. She has showcased designs in New York Fashion Week since 2014, and she has designed for celebrities such as Beyoncé, Eva Longoria, Dascha Polanco, and more. Through high fashion, Nolasco continues to show the world how beautiful Puerto Rico and other Latin countries really are. Colorful textiles and prints find their origin in the native people of Perú, Guatemala, Ecuador, and Mexico. We owe a lot of this influence in the fashion world to the natives of these lands, such as the Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans. When shopping, I’m sure you have come across a piece of clothing containing Aztec designs, especially during the summer season. When we think of Latin countries, we usually think of tropical and summer fashions, but many winter fashions are influenced by Latin countries as well. Fashion elements, such as huipils, a cross between a shirt and a poncho, and llicllas, a type of shawl, influence our current cardigans and sweaters. Additionally, Peruvians are known for utilizing alpaca fur to produce the softest sweaters for the cold climates. Hispanic heritage has an influence on outerwear that is fashion-forward, even at the coldest points of the year. This heritage is rich, alive, and thriving through style and function in the global fashion industry. As we continue Hispanic Heritage Month, take notice of how many trends that can be traced back to their roots in Latin American countries, and try to learn more about Latin America’s cultural influence on the world.

NYFW Makeup: Taking the Runway to Campus By Carson DeLasho

For the Tom Ford show, Kaia Gerber wore a retro, 60s-inspired smokey eye, which is the work of lead makeup artist Pat McGrath. To achieve this look, start by gently packing a black shadow onto the eyelid, then take a clean fluffy, tapered brush and blend out the edges. Next, place a metallic shade in the center of the eye to add more drama and dimension. I would suggest using silver, gold, or another jewel-toned eyeshadow (Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Quad in Lights Out, $3). Finish by highlighting the inner corner of the eye with a light, shimmery color and add mascara. For a bolder look, define the arch and tail of your brows with a brow pencil (L’Oréal Brow Stylist Definer, $9) and comb the brows upwards with a spoolie brush. Gigi Hadid’s makeup look for the Anna Sui show, also created by Pat McGrath, is another ode to the 60s mod style, which features prominent lower lashes and classic winged eyeliner. To replicate Gigi’s eyeshadow, use a palette with pink tones (NYX Brights Ultimate Shadow Palette, $18), and a purple pencil (NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in purple velvet, $4.50) for more precision in creating the floating line in the upper crease and cat eyeliner along the lash line. Blend a bright pink shadow under the front of the brow, and add highlighter to the inner corner for an extra pop. Complete the eyes by applying false lashes or lengthening mascara to the lower lashes. Sweep some blush along the cheeks and put on a soft pink gloss to compliment the pink hue of the eyes. 12

Timberland 6” Work Boots: An NYC Staple The Timberland 6” Work Boot represents New York City like nothing else. But how did these rugged boots become a cult classic for the city’s denizens? The Timberland company was first started in New England in 1918 as a work boot for blue-collar workers. But they did not take the form in which we know them until 1973, when the Timberland boot we love was first released. Because they were made of durable and waterproofed leather, they were perfect for construction work. However, they were also perfect for other things, like standing on street corners and pushing drugs. In the 90s, drug dealers in NYC were allegedly the first ones to bring “Timbs” to New York. According to Rob Walker, author of Buying In, these were people that needed to stay “warm and dry” during the harshest New York winters, which is why they bought the boots. In addition, during that period, rap music was blowing up and the genre’s interconnectedness with the streets allowed Timbs to make their way into hip hop culture.

Everyone from Jay Z, Biggie, Mobb Deep, Wu- Tang Clan, and Nas were wearing the now coveted boots. The boots, in a way, boosted their credibility and reputation as a New York rapper. On one of his most famous songs, Hypnotize, Biggie is quoted saying he got “Timbs for my hooligans in Brooklyn.” On The World

Is Yours, off arguably the greatest hip hop album ever, Illmatic, Nas also gives a shoutout to Timberlands when he mentions how “Suede Timbs on my feet makes my cipher complete.” Timberland originally rejected their new audience, with their CEO at the time telling The New York Times, “If you want to buy us and you are not our target customer, we

By Yujin Kim

don’t have a point of distribution that speaks to your lifestyle.” Their target customer was the everyday blue-collar worker. They even stopped selling in New York, which meant that you had to travel to New England to get a pair—and people did. With superstars like Drake and Kanye starting to rock Timberlands, the brand couldn’t continue to ignore what was now their biggest audience. The Timberland brand now actively embraces its hip hop audience. The collabs with Supreme, Stüssy, Off-White, and Mastermind Japan, all prominent streetwear brands, speak for themselves. While Timberlands have gained mainstream popularity, they are still uniquely New York. Where else in the world can it be 75 degrees and sunny one day, and be snowing the next? And in all that, you still have to walk everywhere. The one thing New Yorkers can count on through the turbulent weather are their Timbs. The history, culture, and utility associated with Timberlands make a statement piece that screams “NY till I die.”

The Italian fashion house Versace has remained a power player in the fashion scene for years, despite the tragic murder of founder Gianni Versace in 1997. The extravagant, yet elegant, feel that Gianni cultivated remains present in collections year after year. This reputation has brought his sister and brand head Donatella Versace to icon status. Donatella was a co-host and curator for this year’s Met Gala, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion in the Catholic Imagination.” She dressed many attendees, such as Blake Lively and Zendaya. As an iconic luxury brand, Versace faces economic pressures. As the world changes and brands expand, Michael Kors has risen in popularity by offering “affordable luxury.” The stark contrast between Michael Kors and Versace has made it hard for fashion enthusiasts to find any commonality between them until very recently. Kors has profited immensely in past years, allowing the brand to acquire Jimmy Choo in July 2017 for $1.2 billion. This was just the beginning of the Kors expansion move-

ment into high fashion. In September 2018, the brand bought Versace for $2.1 billion, and will now go by “Capri Holdings” as opposed to the former “Michael Kors Holdings Limited.” The Versace family will, however, maintain majority control of the company with an 80 percent share. The investment firm, Blackstone, will control the remaining 20 percent, and Donatella will still be the head of her namesake brand. Fans of true couture fashion are left asking: “What does this mean for Versace?”; “Will Versace still be considered a luxury brand?”; or maybe the hopeful “Will prices go down?” While only time will tell what the sale of Versace means for both parties, Donatella herself made one thing clear about the sale. She was quoted saying, optimistically, “This is a very exciting moment for Versace.” She runs the brand with her brother Santo and daughter Allegra, whom she mentioned in her comment: “Santo, Allegra, and I recognize that this next step will allow Versace to reach its full potential.” One thing is for sure: we will be watching closely for more updates on the transformation of Versace.

CC How Lagerfeld has Evolved Chanel’s Runway Shows CC By Isiah Magsino

What do grocery stores, beaches, and activist marches have in common? They’ve all been featured in Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion shows at Chanel. If you haven’t heard of Chanel, the fashion label began in the 1920s by Gabrielle Chanel and has since been the beacon of femininity and sophistication. Although the focus of Chanel’s brand has been high-fashion clothes, the current creative director, Karl Lagerfeld, has elevated the brand’s image through his fantastical runway productions. Each season, Lagerfeld transforms the traditional “up and down” catwalk into something unforgettable. For the latest fashion month that took place in September, Lagerfeld transformed Paris’s Grand Palais into a getaway beach, adding to the season’s overarching sense of escapism. Yes, models walked barefoot with heels in hand through sand alongside Lagerfeld’s “coast.” Though none of the clothes alluded to swimwear, the collections and marine elements created an entertaining juxtaposition of clothing and mood. However, the oceanic getaway is only one example of how Lagerfeld’s creativity has elevated the brands’ fashion month presence.

Here are five other runway moments that redefined the traditional runway show: An Enchanted Forest For Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2018 presentation, Paris’s Grand Palais was converted into an enchanted forest filled with several oaks and poplars. Coming from the West Coast where the outdoor activities were a major part of my life, I’ve always had an interesting relationship with both the outdoors and the fashion world. Seeing them come together felt like home. Chanel Airlines I’ve always hated flying but loved airports. For Spring/Summer 2016, Lagerfeld appealed to my own personal taste and brought audiences to the House of Chanel’s personal airport terminal. With check-in kiosks and branded tickets, no place is too far for Chanel. Viva Las Chanel For Couture Fall/Winter 2015, audiences were transported into a decadent Casino that included muse Kristen Stewart playing her hand at the poker table. Obviously going along with the theme, the collection alluded to the 1920’s flapper girl image with beaded dresses and bobbed hairstyles. Supermarket Fashion Yes, grocery shopping can be chic, according to Karl. With aisles of supermarket shelves filled with Chanelbranded goods throughout the Grand Palais, Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2014 show took high fashion to the most humble environment. I.S.S. Chanel Last but certainly not least, Lagerfeld brought audiences to Chanel’s very own space station. Though the stage was impressive, it was the grand finale of the show that solidified the iconicism of the House of Chanel. As the show ended, the rocket placed in the center of the runway proceeded to “launch.” Smoke was emitted from the ship and Lagerfeld’s production team created the illusion of the massive chunk of metal elevating into the atmosphere. Male Vintage to Fall Fashionista By Sarah Harris

Beginning in the 1920s, women’s fashion broke away from the traditional tight-corset look, and it has since evolved into an comfortable and baggy yet fitted and appealing appearance. The decades succeeding the 20s demonstrate this evolution through the rise in popularity of shorter dresses, shorter skirts, practical pants, and a variety of both formal and casual shirts. During the 1980s, subtle intakes of male-influenced clothing can be seen in the baggy sweater look. This style has now returned with a new name: the vintage oversized sweater. Like these sweaters, colorful, loose flannels are loved by women today. These flannels were first created for farmers, but when paired with ripped skinny jeans or leggings and leather booties, we update classic flannel style with a unique, contemporary twist. Another updated trend has been the huge increase in what used to be known as “mom jeans, referring to a pair of classic, loose, high-waisted jeans. This trend has returned through the popular style of boyfriend jeans, often paired with the previously mentioned flannels and sweaters. These baggy yet waist-hugging weathered pants are extremely comfortable, and became a menswear staple during the 80s and 90s. However, with an amazing eye for style, women have certainly changed baggy male looks into a trendy fall fashionista appearance.

Little to

Big

By Emma Kaden

As someone who religiously watches every runway show through my

computer screen and regularly stalks every fashion blogger out there, you could say I try to stay up to date on the latest trends in the fashion industry.

While there are some trends that are so outlandish that I can’t get behind them, others are less so. Many times the latest trends featured on the runway are impractical pieces that are meant to make you look hip.

Watching effortlessly slim, six-foot models wear an outfit comes across quite differently than watching me try to

wear the same thing to class. This juxtaposition is what sets super high-end street style icons apart from regular people, who aren’t thinking about whether or not they’re sporting the most recent trends. People like me can appreciate impractical fashion, but recognize that their lifestyle does not necessarily match their taste. One of the less outrageous trends last season was tiny sunglasses. If you opened your Instagram feed, you could see everyone wearing the tiniest sunglasses perched on the very tip of their nose. I for one loved this look because it’s the perfect balance of being wearable and stylish. However, this is a prime example of fashion at the height of impracticality. I would brave the Soho streets with my tiny sunglasses, surrounded by my fellow tiny sunglass wearers, as we all squinted at the sun. While I really appreciated the moment tiny sunglasses had, I am very happy that the trend, along with its impracticality, is coming to an end! I no longer need to feel idiotic for wearing useless, tiny, unflattering sunglasses on a sunny day.

Another popular “tiny” trend was micro bags. Often on my Instagram feed, I would see my favorite bloggers squeezing one little lipstick into their tiny purse. Are we just going to pretend that you can fit your giant iPhone into that tiny box bag? But despite its impracticality, I loved this trend. It was beyond extra; I liked to walk around sassily with my tiny sunglasses and my tiny overstuffed bag.

However, this Spring/Summer 2019 season, I was not at all upset to see some of my favorite designers showcasing larger purses on the runway. This included Jacquemus, who is famous

f o r

his huge straw hats. Those tiny Louis Vuitton box bags—which are extremely overpriced, I might add—are finally out of season. Just

like

that, impracticality is out, and big pieces are in! As for the tiny sunglasses, there was another a shift on the runway to huge

round sunglasses. No longer will anyone be squinting; we can

now hide our eyes whenever we please. Does this mean all trend followers will be able to survive the sun this spring while carrying full purses? I guess so!

Tired Trends: Lack of Variety in Today’s Makeup IndustrY

By Claire Silverberg

If you consider yourself a follower of the beauty community, whether as an artist or in simply scrolling through Instagram looks, you may have noticed a recent lull in trends. Think about it: what’s trending right now? Are any of those products or looks you’re thinking about actually new? In the past, one hit product has inspired months of inspiration. If you’re the kind of person to closely follow makeup trends—and I know I am—you may be a little bored. Let’s look at how previous makeup trends have started. Urban Decay had two major releases that inspired many trends. Their iconic Naked eyeshadow palette reaffirmed the cool tone eyeshadow trend. In addition, the “Naked 3” palette sparked an onslaught of many other pink-focused eyeshadow palettes from other companies as people felt empowered to play with a little color in their day-to-day lives. The third and most recent release to spark a large makeup trend was the Anastasia Beverly Hills “Modern Renaissance” eyeshadow palette. After this release, makeup users’ focus shifted towards using warm browns and oranges on the eyes—a stark contrast from the cool tone colors with which we started. These trend transitions make sense: colors have gone from cool grays or blacks to warm tones due to the “Modern Renaissance” palette’s popularity. But that palette was released in 2016, so where are we now? Putting aside editorial Instagram looks that people don’t actually wear and, to be honest, don’t reach real “trend status” (I’m

looking at you, wavy brows), the closest thing to a new makeup trend has been more experimentation with bright colors. With the emergence of 90s vintage clothing trends, this makes sense. We’ve been easing back into using more color for a while now. No major makeup brand seems to want to take the risk of releasing bright colors. But this isn’t to say there has never been a successful bright colored palette. We had the Urban Decay “Electric” palette, though it never reached a true cult or trend status like the eye palettes mentioned previously. So makeup enthusiasts will continue to wait, either for a possible brights trend to bloom or for brands to surprise us and bring something new to the table.

Adding color is another way to step up your denim game. You can ease into this look with neutral colors or boldly jump into neon ones, but one thing is for sure: you will have a killer outfit. Good On You

By Mackenzie Merriman

It’s no surprise that, as a 20-something-year-old girl, skin blemishes can make or break your day. Coming from a girl who has been fortunate enough to have minimal breakouts, one pimple sends me into panic mode. In my 20 years, I had yet to experience a skin issue; that is, until this fall after arriving back to school. Unsure of the how to deal with the sudden onset of blemishes, I tried everything from a dairy-free diet to changing my entire skincare routine to washing my face every hour, on the hour. Nothing was working, and I was desperate. I soon realized that one product I already owned and loved could help answer all my skin-related problems. I had been using Tula face wash for a while, and I adored it—I still do! But I felt I wasn’t getting the best results by just using their face wash. It was simply a cleanser, with no additional benefits; I needed a routine. I dove into the Tula line face-first and discovered the latest and greatest from this gem of a startup company. Within a week of the full Tula skincare regimen, my face started clearing up, until, low and behold, my acne was gone! Redness from past acne scars began fading, (which, to me, was most important) and zits began shrinking. I became #tulaobsessed.

Lash Worth The Ca$h ? By Emily Abate

The trend of choosing eyelash extensions over traditional glue-on lashes is making headlines everywhere. The beauty world has transitioned from applying false eyelashes to now getting lash extensions that typically last two to five weeks. Lash extensions are used to enhance, lengthen, fill, and curl one’s natural lashes. The lash extensions are placed individually with an adhesive glue to the lashes one by one. But the question still remains: is the lash worth the cash? Here are some points to keep in mind when deciding whether lash extensions are suited to your lifestyle. First off, if you are thinking of getting eyelash extensions, do your research! Search for the most reputable and experienced technician and salon in your area. A bad technician can ruin your natural eyelashes if the application is done poorly. Another factor to keep in mind is the upkeep and time required. Each lash extension cluster is glued onto a single real eyelash with semi-permanent adhesive glue. The glue is specially formulated to not irritate or damage the eyes. Since the lash extensions are glued onto natural lashes, the extensions only last through a full growth cycle of the natural lashes, which is normally six to eight weeks.

Glue- On Lashes

18

However, each person’s lash growth cycle is different, which is why technicians recommend coming in to get a refill of the extensions every three weeks. This can be time-consuming, as the process of applying new extensions can take up to three hours, while refills can be up to an hour. In addition, coming in every three weeks for a refill can become very costly. The finished product, however, is long, voluminous, curled lashes that bring any makeup look to life. Something else to be mindful of is that, with lash extensions, you cannot wear any mascara, curl your lashes, or use oil-based makeup remover. Technicians advise clients to steer away from doing any of the above, as it can make the extensions fall out sooner than the normal growth cycle. In addition, oil-based makeup remover, along with exposure to water, sweat, and frequent showering, will weaken the glue’s bond. Lash extensions come with great responsibility; however, the payoff is beautiful, full, lengthy lashes. Despite some of the cons of lash extensions, opting instead for glue-on false lashes can be tedious and tiring to apply everyday. Looking at it this way, lash extensions can be worth the cash!

The Rise of Natural Beauty Products By Marianne Scappaticci

It’s 7:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, and your alarm just went off. To procrastinate getting ready for your 8:30 a.m. class, you lay in bed wondering why the weekend always seems to fly by, whereas the school week feels like an eternity. Once you gather the strength to get out of bed, you put on your favorite outfit and makeup to make your Monday a little less dreary and feel more awake. You immediately feel more confident in yourself and your appearance and run off to class, where you somehow manage to arrive on time. While applying your favorite makeup products can help boost your confidence, it’s important to note that, unfortunately, these products might be harmful to your skin. It’s very likely that some of the products you own and love contain chemical ingredients that are damaging to your skin. Thus, it’s important to make sure you know whether or not your products are safe to use.

Switching to all-natural beauty products is the best way to ensure safe makeup that is free of chemicals! Within the past few years, there has been a rising beauty trend of using all-natural products. Even some celebrities and beauty bloggers have sworn by this trend. I didn’t know very much about all-natural beauty products until this past summer when I was fortunate enough to intern for a small beauty company that specializes in all-natural hair, skin, and sun care. Through this internship, I learned about the many benefits of using products that contain pure, chemical-free ingredients. The main problem with standard beauty products is their chemical composition. These toxic chemicals can be absorbed into your skin, which has the potential of causing health problems down the road. Some chemicals found in standard beauty products can cause breakouts and irritation; however, natural products are made from non-toxic ingredients, so they are completely safe to use. While natural products are slightly more expensive than your standard beauty products, the benefits outweigh their price difference because you are making an investment towards smoother, healthier skin. Some of the leading brands I recommend in the all-natural industry include 100% Pure, W3LL PEOPLE, Burt’s Bees, Babo Botanicals, Jane Iredale, and Honest Beauty. Next time I am in the market for cosmetic products, I will definitely be purchasing ones that are all-natural, and I highly encourage you to do the same! You too can feel more comfortable wearing makeup with the knowledge that your products’ ingredients are pure, safe, and of the highest quality.

Eye Candy By Cassidy Murphy

We’ve all heard the saying “you can’t judge a book by its cover,” but how often do we find ourselves making superficial judgements? Chances are, much more often than youw’d expect. But books aren’t the only thing we’re judging; we also judge makeup. As humans, we naturally tend to gravitate toward things that we find aesthetically pleasing. This is why it’s not surprising that, if given the chance to choose between an e.l.f. brand highlighter, in basic white and clear packaging, and Two Faced Diamond Highlighter, packaged in a glamorous ring box, most would go with the latter in a heartbeat—price tag aside. Despite the similarities between the two highlighters, something about Two Faced products lures consumers in, and surprisingly, it may not have anything to do with the quality of the makeup product itself. It’s the product’s packaging that makes it so desirable. This leaves us with an important question: are the makeup products that are ornate in packaging really any better than those of a more modest presentation? In short, the answer is not necessarily. Take a look at Glossier, an NYCbased skincare and makeup company, which packages their products in simple, yet sleek containers. Their minimalistic aesthetic adds a “cool” factor. Trendy pastel Glossier stickers and a signature millennial-pink bubble wrap makeup bag come with every purchase,

20

creating a distinct image that attracts a young, hip audience. Better yet is Kylie Jenner’s new makeup collection for her brand Kylie Cosmetics, which features BFF Jordyn Woods. The line is a collaboration with renowned fashion illustrator Hayden Williams, who designed exclusive artwork of the socialites for the packaging. With Williams’ stunning illustrations, the packaging is enough to convince both Kylie’s and Hayden’s fans to purchase the products. From makeup brushes that resemble mermaid tails and roses, to chocolate bar and crayon-themed eyeshadow palettes, the list of beauty products that have received major attention simply for their packaging goes on and on. However, just because a product is pretty on the outside doesn’t guarantee that it’s of the best quality. Sure Glossier’s “Balm Dotcom” is more visually pleasing than my tube of A+D Ointment, but does it really work any better? Sadly, no. Makeup is ultimately an experience that deserves to be fun and enjoyable. Nevertheless, consumers should be mindful of the effect packaging can have, and realize what it is they are really paying for. At the end of the day, how well a product functions, apart from the bells and whistles, is what truly matters. So the next time you’re about to drop a pretty penny on a makeup product, stop and ask yourself if you’re really paying for the makeup, or if you’re paying for its packaging. Then you can decide if the eye candy is worth the price tag.

5 Shades of Nude This Fall By Anita Tataj You can never go wrong with MAC Cosmetics lipstick. Whether it’s matte or satin, MAC has the perfect formula. They have a variety of colors in all finishes, but MAC is best known for their wide range of neutral shades. From pink to mauve undertones, MAC has them all. There is the perfect nude for every skin type and color, every festive look this fall, and those “no-makeup” makeup days. Trust me when I say that no two MAC nude lips are the same; each has its own shade, tone, and texture—so don’t feel guilty about buying them all! The colors listed below are my favorite everyday wear nude lipsticks for this fall/winter season.

PERSISTENCE

Persistence is a peachy cinnamon with a matte finish. It’s a subdued, medium brown lipstick with warm, reddish-orange undertones. It has beautiful opaque color coverage and a creamy, almost velvety consistency. This is the perfect deep, warm shade to add some color to a neutral makeup look.

WHIRL

Whirl is a dirty rose with a matte finish. It’s a muted, medium-dark rosy brown with warm undertones. The most daring of the mentioned colors, this lipstick will be the standout feature in your fall makeup look, and the perfect bold lip to draw attention at your holiday parties.

CREMESHEEN MODESTY

This lipstick has pink undertones but, with different lip liners, it can morph into different shades. Its nourishing formula is a must-have! This color is something you can comfortably wear anywhere. It has nice color payoff with a smooth, creamy texture that glides on evenly. Although, fall is known for matte lipsticks, but this formula is universal. Cremesheen Modesty will match any outfit or makeup look and adds a beautiful pop of color to any skin tone.

VELVET TEDDY

Taking a dive into the deeper neutrals, Velvet Teddy is the perfect rich beige. It’s a matte nude shade with a hint of mauve and more brown undertones compared to the other lipsticks listed. This shade is a muted, light-medium rosy beige with warm undertones—perfect for those mauve makeup looks this fall.

TAUPE

This lipstick should be a fall staple in every makeup collection. Taupe gives you the ability to add a bit more color without stepping too far outside of your comfort zone. The shade is a medium taupe with a red undertone. While it’s definitely a darker nude, Taupe is a safe bet with any red or golden makeup look this holiday season.

No one ever warned me how easy it is to lose touch with those to whom I was once closest. No one told me that my lifelong friends and I would grow apart. Going into college meant socializing with new people, fostering new friendships, and everyone tells you it’s where you make your closest friends. While that may be true, I believe in the power of maintaining your friends. So where did I stand with the people I used to spend 8+ hours with everyday? Both fortunately and unfotunately, at college, everything is new— including the people. The harsh reality is that you’re not going to be surrounded by the people who have grown to know you like the back of their hand. I, for one, was scared that I would be expected to let go of my old friends in order to make new ones. Here’s the thing: you don’t have to let go of your old friends. There are ways to stay in contact with those who feel like home. My biggest piece of advice? Don’t feel

jealous of your high school friends’ new friends. Instead, be excited that your best friend is happy at their new school, and be happy that you’re meeting new people. That being said, breaks are breaks for a reason. Going home for a few days every few months, or even more often if you can, is important. Making plans with your old friends is especially essential. Every time I’m home, I make sure to meet up

However, don’t rely upon breaks entirely! Always keep a group chat. It may not mean talking every day, or seeing each other all of the time, but a group chat keeps the communication alive. Sending a short text might brighten someone’s day. Make sure to keep your friends up to date about your latest adventure, your hardest class, or maybe even a love interest. I would also recommend even more creative means of virtual friendship—like fantasy football. For me and my friends, this is a light-hearted way to keep in touch. Each week, whoever loses the league each has to perform whatever dare the rest of the group assigns. It’s usually the highlight of my week, and I love that it is an interactive way to keep in touch. Keeping in touch with your friends from home undeniably requires effort. The important thing is that you keep them up to date with your current life, and that you both put in the effort to stay in touch. I promise that your old friends will feel just as new.

It’s an easy way to not only reminisce about old times, but to realize that although things are now different, your friendship hasn’t suffered because of the shift.

The Romantic Notions of Studying Abroad By Alex Berndt

22

If there is one thing that people love to romanticize, its studying abroad. It seems almost impossible to extract traveling the world from the sentimental fog in which society encapsulates it. Whether we see it as a time to find ourselves or to fall in love with a mysterious stranger, foreign travel is often cloaked in clichés. I hadn’t questioned my own romantic notions of studying abroad until my mother announced that I wasn’t allowed to fall in love at Trinity College Dublin next spring because I may never come back from Ireland. I was ready to laugh the comment off until I realized how serious she was. She’s still convinced that my time in Ireland will mean living out the plot of “Leap Year.” Co-opted by nostalgia and romcoms, “studying abroad” has seemingly become shorthand for “whirlwind romance.” Growing up watching films like “The Lizzie McGuire Movie,” young girls are made to believe that traveling the world is inherently romantic and will undoubtedly produce a love interest to star opposite them in a “tale as old as time.”Yanked out of your routine, it can seem like the real world is on pause while studying abroad.

It seems easy to pretend that—for a short time—life is like a movie. If you’re interested in pursuing romance during your time away, though, do it with eyes wide open. As a girl, it’s important to be cautious no matter where you are. Studying abroad may very well bring you love and happiness, but don’t wait for adventure to find you and don’t presume romance came included with tuition. Clichés exist for a reason—more often than not, there’s a kernel of truth buried beneath all the myths. Moreover, studying abroad does offer an amazing opportunity to reflect upon what you want out of life and who you want to become. With a clean slate and no expectations to box you in, you may foster unexplored interests or drop old habits which you’ve grown out of. Certainly, studying abroad can be a self-fulfilling prophecy: you evolve because you’re open to evolving, you relax because you let yourself relax. Studying abroad is romanticized for a reason.

The Strain of Drug Dependency Between Significant Others By Caroline Forier Now more than ever, substance abuse plagues our society. In recent years, concern has pivoted to nicotine addictions developing amongst teens, leaving substance abuse to be simultaneously overlooked, normalized, and radically stigmatized by different groups. Those struggling with addiction, as well as their loved ones, are left to ask: How do you deal with something that society has consistently chosen not to deal with? Having personally faced this question, it is now something that I do my best to help others answer. This is for one simple reason: I wished there had been someone who understood what it was like when I was in that position.

Offer as much support to your significant other as you can without draining yourself. Love is a powerful feeling, and it can make you do crazy things. There is no doubt that you will want to be there for them in their time of need, but you need to find a balance between taking care of your partner and taking care of yourself. Do not ignore your own needs to cater to your significant other. Breaking yourself to fix what’s broken only leaves more pieces on the floor. Realistically, you cannot help someone heal if you are also under great strain, and this goes for any situation involving mental health.

Breaking yourself to fix what’s broken only leaves more pieces on the floor. In this situation, educating yourself is imperative. Of course, there are endless possible extenuating circumstances that may come into play, depending on the individual situation. But pushing yourself to really appreciate what the other person is going through is essential. Rather than giving in to anger, look to acceptance and advancement. Try not to let frustration dominate, because neither impatience nor obstinance is productive. Accept that this is the situation, and do what you can to help them move towards a place of progress.

But, to be painfully honest, working toward progress can be frustrating. It will not take place overnight; progress comes in the form of baby steps. But every step in the right direction is still a step in the right direction. Meet Andre Interview by Katie Konfino

24

I

t is a crisp October day when I meet with senior student-athlete, Andre Guthrie, for the first time. He greets me with a smile and is eager to hear more about MODE. I quickly learn that Andre is kindhearted and outgoing. I discuss his involvement on campus and how he would describe his personal style. Why did you choose Fordham? [I chose Fordham because it’s] so close to the city and the business school is solid, and that really sold it for me. The campus is beautiful [too]. What is your major? Finance. What clubs are you involved with? I am apart of the Track & Field sports team at Fordham. I am on the e-board for ASILI (The Black Student Alliance at Fordham). It is not really a big club, but we [have the] Healthy Kids Running Club. You run with kids in the Bronx and it is a free program. Can you tell me more about your involvement with ASILI? [In ASILI] you see a lot of faces like yours. We just talk about real life stuff that is happening in the world. It is just nice to know you have a community here at Fordham, especially when there is like .5 Black people on campus. It is a unique club, we bring people together...and try to make [a] change on campus. What is a goal you are working towards in ASILI? The goal is always to make people more conscious of what is going on and getting people out of their bubble. Because a lot of people come to Fordham in their bubbles and they never leave that bubble. So just opening up that perspective, paying attention to what is going on other than yourself. We are so fortunate to be at a university like this and a lot of kids take for granted what is going on. What is your e-board position in ASILI? I am the Marketing Director, and last year I was the Athletic liaison. Where does ASILI meet if people want to join? We meet every Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Dealy Hall room 301. It is really fun. We just had [a program] “Taste the World”.

25

Do you have a fashion inspiration? I was a Kanye hypebeast for a little bit, but then he went crazy. I wear a lot of Nike, and on the weekend, I am a big [fan] of solid tees from like H&M. How would you describe your fashion sense? You can’t put words to it. I wear a lot of long tees, bigger tees, a lot of black jeans, a lot of blue jeans, [and sneakers] like Vans and Nike Runners. Does your weekend style differ from your weekday? Absolutely. It depends where I am going, if I am at Fordham I wear sweats.

26

Who is your biggest inspiration in life? My mom and my grandfather. They have always been really positive and they have overcome so much, and I really respect it. Escaping communist Laos, [that was] my mom when she was three. She is incredible, but that is a whole other story‌ What is something people should know about you? Something super simple, I am a lover of God. Faith is really important in my life. Being in college, you can lose your faith a little bit but that is something I have always held on to, my faith and God.

Five years from now‌ I think I will be in Cali, definitely a different scene. I am comfortable being uncomfortable, being in spaces where I am going to grow. Wherever Andre ends up, he is sure to be radiating positivity. Visuals by Jeffrey Pelayo

Fostering a Healthy and Successful Long-Distance Relationship By Christopher Zarodkiewicz

Going to college can be an exciting time in your life. Incoming students have long dreamed of the host of burgeoning relationships and fresh experiences that await them. However, if you’re like me, college also means living in a foreign country, 4000 miles away from your family, friends, and significant other. Maintaining a relationship when you live in the same town can be hard—maintaining any

kind of relationship takes work. But compounding commonplace conflicts with distance should make it near-impossible. Right? The general consensus seems to be that long distance relationships aren’t worth it, but I don’t believe that’s entirely true. Here are pros and cons of a long distance relationship which you might not have thought about.

Pros:

In a long distance relationship you might not be able to see your partner everyday, which gives you time for yourself. This aspect of the relationship is under-appreciated; it gives you time to develop new connections without causing strain on your romantic relationship. If both partners went to the same school, they might fall into the habit of spending time with only one another. This may not seem harmful in the moment, but that kind of isolation can smother your individual identity. A semester or even a few years apart can give partners the time and space to mature alongside their relationship.

Cons:

Many understand long distance relationships as futile and stressful attempts to prolong a relationship that simply can’t be sustained. I’m not going to lie: it can be tough. Fighting is a problem in any relationship, but when partners cannot reconcile in person afterwards, animosity can fester unacknowledged much longer than it normally would. Communicating within a couple of days after a fight is absolutely necessary, though neither online communication nor time difference makes it easy. This shouldn’t necessarily scare you, though.

To give your long-distance relationship a fighting chance, here are some tips: When it comes to fights or disagreements, swallow your pride and resolve it as soon as possible. Simply put, don’t let your emotions get the best of you. Stay calm and hear the other person out. Even if you’re right, LET IT GO. Your relationship is not worth the argument you’re having. Never end a call with either partner upset. If you hang up, leaving each other to ruminate on anger or hurt feelings, it will affect your relationship. If you love your partner, you will do what’s best for both of you. Caring about them and making sure they feel loved regardless of the distance is key to a healthy and successful relationship.

When Feminism Meets Music By Hannah Melly

The future is most definitely female, and that isn’t any different for the future of music. From Aretha Franklin demanding respect to Beyoncé creating an anthem for girls all over the world, feminism in music has empowered and inspired women for years. Now, more so than ever and in the midst of the #MeToo movement, female empowerment is needed. Luckily, this past year women have been changing the music industry with their powerhouse vocals and subversive lyrics. If we were to put a name on the redefinition of music this past year, it would without question be Ariana Grande. After the Manchester attacks, Grande had every right to take as much time as she needed to heal. However, she not only immediately held the One Love Manchester concert, but she also began working on her fourth studio album. Released this past August, Sweetener soon climbed the charts, as did Grande’s rise to becoming a feminist icon. Grande has always been one to speak out on matters of female empowerment, yet Sweetener was the first time her music truly reflected these views. This album has catapulted Grande into full-fledged stardom and taken her career to a new level. There’s one song in particular that deserves everyone's undivided attention: “God is a Woman.” Despite the name seemingly revolving around religious themes, the true focus of this song is about embracing the beauty of being a woman and the power of femininity. The music video encapsulates the beautiful ideas of feminism. It even has a Madonna cameo—if that doesn’t scream feminism, I don't know what does. Despite big name artists like Ariana Grande making a difference within the industry, it’s important to note lesser-known artists that are making progress for women in music too. The music of Maggie Rogers, NYU alumni, can’t be defined by a single genre; she creates depth of character that can’t be described in a single word. She’s an optimist, an environmentalist, a musician, a traveler, and, most importantly, a feminist. As mentioned before with Ariana Grande’s “God is a Woman” music video, the visuals are often as important as the song itself. “Alaska” is her most popular track and the song that put her on the radar. It uses the fluidity of femininity to communicate its new-age lyrics. The music video doesn't need flashy cinematography or special effects to make a statement. The diversity of women and the natural beauty present creates the feeling that you're a part of this girl squad, roaming and singing in the Alaskan woods.

Ariana Grande and Maggie Rogers are only two of the many artists who are empowering women through music. Especially in today’s tense climate, it’s more important than ever that women are using their platforms to promote other women, and the beauty in what that means. Whether it’s Ariana Grande calling out men for sexist comments on a live talk show or Maggie Rogers’s unique artistry showcasing girl power, feminism is no doubt trumping barriers through music.

On September 7th, rapper Malcolm James McCormick, otherwise known as Mac Miller, was found dead in his LA home after an apparent overdose. This news is nothing short of tragic for his family, friends, and fans, as well as the entire music industry. Miller grew up in Pittsburgh, PA, and he began experimenting with and creating music https://genius.com/albums/Mac-miller/On-and-on-and-beyond at the age of 15. His early projects, including Best Day Ever and Blue Slide Park, served as a fountain of youth for his predominantly young fans. These works were an outlet, a sort of escape from the harsh realities of growing up. Miller never stopped creating. His unfortunately short career in music proves his incredible ability to adapt and refine his music. His sounds were constantly evolving, with each new album and project showcasing a side of Miller that listeners had never seen. The Divine Feminine, released in July of 2016, is exactly this. The album explores love and femininity through a softer, and more confident, Miller. This work is full of singing, poetic instrumentals, and an array of features from other artists. There are allusions to Miller’s ex-girlfriend, Ariana Grande, intertwined throughout the album. It is not hard to say that this album was the beginning of Miller’s solidifying debut as an artist, fully capturing his individuality and voice. His next and most recent project, Swimming, released just a month before his death, was, and still is, his greatest work of

music. Miller holds nothing back, exploring his own struggles with anxiety, addiction, and heartbreak. His voice on the album is as prominent and honest as ever. His song 2009 captures it best, “Yeah, okay you gotta jump in to swim/Well, the light was dim in this life of sin/Now every day I wake up and breathe/I don’t have it all but that’s alright with me.” This album shows Miller’s awareness of the long process of recovery. It demonstrates both reflection and contentedness. Miller is seemingly at peace with his struggles. On a small scale, Miller’s early death at 26 is tragic because he had so much more to add to the music industry. He never stopped working on himself, constantly promoting positivity and honesty. His voice, his aura, and his essence were all distinctly Mac Miller. He never tried to imitate other artists or bang out a hit song, he merely sought to find himself and project that through his music. On a larger scale, Miller’s death highlights the desperate need for help and support for those struggling with addiction. The music industry has lost too many stars to this disease—John Bonham, Hillel Slovak, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, Prince, and more. Each loss is tragic and a reminder that this disease can affect anyone, regardless of race, socioeconomic status, or gender. And it does. Overdoses happen every single day in America and the number continues to rise. America needs to address this problem; something needs to be done. We’ve read about these overdoses on the news. We watched our parents mourn the loss of their favorite musicians. But this one is too close to home. We grew up bumping Mac Miller. We were there for his growth as an artist, for every new project. His music will never die. Rest in peace Malcolm, The Most Dope. By Emily Malacane

Branded

By Amanda Blaze

People say that imitation is the best form of flattery. Our generation has embraced that wholeheartedly. As college students, we have seen an array of fads including Hollister, Ralph Lauren, Supreme, Jordan, Nike, Chanel, and Calvin Klein. The sheer existence of one of those logos on an article of clothing makes the outfit that much more desirable. Recently, the label of choice has been Gucci, an Italian luxury brand. Among young influencers, the most popular medium for this iconic logo is the Gucci belt. These belts are priced anywhere between 200 and 1,050 dollars. For college students, Gucci is pricey, but that doesn’t mean it is inaccessible. Many students around Fordham and the greater NYC area have been spotted sporting the iconic logo, but they are not coughing up hundreds of dollars for the fad. Students are easily able to pay $4.50 for a train ticket to Chinatown and haggle with the numerous street vendors. In the name of research, I decided to do just that. Fellow Mode contributor Mackenzie and I made the trek to Chinatown to find out what all the fuss was about. I wasn’t sure what to expect and was overwhelmed with all of the places to choose from. The first location was an open store filled with NYC merchandise, but when we walked up to the owner he led us to the back where he had a hidden cabinet. From the cabinet, the man pulled out an opaque plastic bag containing the “Gucci” belts we had requested. He asked for $55 for each belt. If there is one thing I learned it

is that you should never accept the first price you are given. Mackenzie, without missing a beat, said she would pay $15. When asking for low prices, there was always a moment of extreme awkwardness when the vendors said no. But after walking away, nine times out of ten they came back with a bargain. We ended up buying our belts for $30 each from a singular vendor on the street, who very nicely added more holes to make the belts tighter around our waist. After having these belts for a few weeks, I can’t say it is life changing, although it does add a very nice touch to any outfit. While you don’t need a designer logo to show you have good style, it is good to know that it is possible for anyone to get a hold of one with a little bit of bargaining and street knowledge of NYC.

We ByShould All Be Global Citizens Katie Crist If you are looking to elevate your awareness of social and political issues and are enchanted by the magic of a music festival, Global Citizen is an organization you should know about. Global Citizen’s movement aims to educate young people on major issues that plague the world, including hunger, sanitation, public health, and the environment. According to their website, Global Citizen’s ultimate goal is to end extreme global poverty by 2030. To accomplish this, Global Citizen operates through an app, where they post about global issues and allow people to respond and raise awareness of these issues in the form of tweets, emails, and telephone calls. As users take action on the issues that Global Citizen raise, they win points. The points won within the app qualify users to enter a drawing for free tickets to the Global Citizen Festival, the organization’s annual music festival in Central Park. Since its founding six years ago, the Global Citizen Festival has been headlined by some of the most eminent artists in popular music, including Beyonce and John Mayer. The festival is even curated by Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. This exchange of discourse for tickets is mutually beneficial both for broke college students wanting to attend large music festivals usually accompanied by a substantial price tag and for the various programs and issues of which Global Citizen raises awareness. This past summer, I decided to download the app and try to win tickets to the festival. I completed several

actions within the app in order to gain enough points to enter the drawing and found myself enjoying the process. I learned a lot about international social issues that expanded my awareness of the world, and I also developed a deeper understanding of my own country’s political climate. After winning the tickets from the drawing, I was able to attend the festival, which included performances from Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd, Cardi B, Janet Jackson, and more. The festival itself was such a lively and gratifying experience. When my friend and I entered the venue, we were immediately ushered over to a station where we received free reusable water bottles. We then proceeded to listen to some of the world’s biggest musicians and heard from other celebrities and politicians who encouraged us to continue participating in social activism and to utilize our right to vote. There were powerful performances from all of the artists, including an especially powerful performance from Cardi B, and even more compelling statements from celebrities and artists like Mark Ruffalo and Chris Martin. The Global Citizen Festival flawlessly combined two very important things: music and activism. I also would like to reiterate that this electrifying experience was completely free because I took action on issues and took the time to educate myself. I would highly recommend participating in Global Citizen’s movement, as I can only expect that the festival will blossom even further in the coming years.

The Upward Trend of Representation in Mass Media photo cred: popsugar.com

By Gayathri Thelekatt

2018 has been a remarkable year for minorities in Hollywood. With movies like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians topping the box office, more diverse representation is finally materializing on the big screen. Over the years, Hollywood has repeatedly been criticized for its lack of representation, corroborated by its tendency to favor white males for leading roles and directorial positions. Hollywood has definitely come a long way since the trending hashtag of 2015, #Oscarssowhite, but there is still much progress to be made. So why should we care about representation on the silver screen? Does the race of actor really matter? The answer is yes, and we should care. Studies have concluded that the lack of people of color and women on screen can have damaging effects on the psyche of children. In 2012, Nicole Martins and Kristen Harrison of the University of Michigan conducted a study measuring the self-esteem of 400 children after they were exposed to television shows. The results of their research showed that the self-esteem of white girls, black girls, and black boys were measured to be negatively impacted after watching, whereas white boys showed an increase in selfesteem. The media often lean on certain stereotypes or tropes when portraying minorities. Black men are often portrayed as dangerous and violent thugs. Similarly, Asian characters are depicted as “nerds” or as having unreasonably thick accents. The industry’s reliance on stereotypes leads to one-dimensional characters who are simply reduced to a stereotype. Further, this representation affects the way minorities and women view themselves, and how society views them too. The media is largely responsible for the way people view the world, and with that in mind, Hollywood needs to improve the ways in which it portrays minorities. This is why movies like Black Panther and Crazy Rich Asians are so important. The 2018 film features an all-black cast, a black director, and one of the first major black superheroes. Social media was littered with messages praising the film’s creators and cast for finally creating a film that portrayed a superhero of color. Even former first lady Michelle Obama

thanked the Black Panther team in a tweet: “Because of you, young people will finally see superheroes that look like them on the big screen.” Crazy Rich Asians, another groundbreaking 2018 film, brought in an estimated $117 million, earning it a spot as one of the most popular romantic comedies of the decade. The film features a dynamic all-Asian cast and is directed by Jon M. Chu, who is of Asian descent. More importantly, the film does not rely on tired stereotypes; each character is different and complicated. Hollywood has a poor track record with its representation of the Asian community, so Crazy Rich Asians is a landmark film. In 2017, Scarlett Johansson received major criticism from audiences everywhere for being cast as an Asian character, Major Motoko Kusanagi, in Ghost in the Shell. The reaction to Crazy Rich Asians was the opposite. Not only was it a wellmade film, but audiences were thrilled to see a representative cast on the big screen. Countless articles and blog posts were published after the film’s release of people expressing their gratitude for its representation of Asian people. Looking back at photo cred: vox.com films like the 1984 film Sixteen Candles, which includes a wildly offensive depiction of its only character of color, “Long Duk Dong,” it is great to see how far Hollywood has come. Women and minorities are no longer props and background characters for cisgender white men. However, although the industry has

made a lot of progress, there are still ways to go. Only six out of the thirty highest grossing films of this year featured a female protagonist. Further, only two of the six actresses in these films were women of color. The reality is that a couple of blockbusters with a non-white cast is not enough and that Hollywood needs to seriously modify its practices. Equal representation of minorities and women matters, and should become a priority. Movies like Crazy Rich Asians, Oceans 8, and Black Panther should not be considered groundbreaking, they should be normalized.

Placid Beads Jewelry

By Mackenzie Merriman & Emily Abate

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but you might think twice after seeing this chic line of beaded jewelry, specially handcrafted by New Jersey native Natalie Commesso. What started as a high school hobby quickly became much more. Natalie Commesso, owner and designer of Placid Beads, first started her jewelry company as a way to add more glitz and glam to her ordinary Catholic school uniform. Commesso first started making her own jewelry sophomore year of high school, and her business quickly expanded as her fellow classmates also wanted to spice up their school uniforms. She took a trip to the New York City beading district, where she became inspired to take her jewelry

pieces to the next level by using different beads, colors, textures, and techniques. Commesso sold the jewelry in her town’s local boutique, Mondo, where more customers were exposed to her line. As increasing numbers of people fell in love with the jewelry, she extended the line. Commesso began creating statement necklaces that are to be worn either layered with a choker or simply by itself. Placid Beads has now grown into a popular jewelry company. Commesso is now inspired by her daily college life here at Fordham, as well as by New York City’s culture and love for fashion. All of the jewelry is water and tarnish-proof, which makes her pieces even more enticing to consumers who love the beach, warm air, and salt water. This jewelry line will take you from errands to the beach, or even to the gym! As a Soul Cycle enthusiast, Commesso designed her jewelry to be durable and long-lasting even through the sweatiest of workouts. Natalie has designed collections that embody her hobbies and passions; her sets include the college letters collection, the SoulCycle limited edition collection, the Grecian collection, and more. These designs and collections can be found on her social media accounts, like her aesthetically pleasing Instagram page (@placid_beads), or on her newly designed website. Like what you see? By posting a picture in the jewelry, you can become a Placid Babe and maybe even receive a discount! Commesso is a sophomore this year at Fordham University, studying Communications and Culture with a minor in Business Administration and Fashion Studies. She is eager to expand her jewelry line with the hope of owning a larger company in the future. Can someone say boss babe?

Dairy- Free Vegan Cheese

By Emily Abate Almost everyone loves cheese, but for many people, this love is not reciprocated. I recently learned that I am extremely lactose intolerant, and I am extremely sad about it. I used to not be able to go a single day without eating some form of dairy, whether it be cheese, milk, or yogurt. Unfortunately, I had to stop. I cut dairy completely out of my diet but I was still missing the creamy texture of cheese and yogurt. After furiously scanning the Internet for dairy-free cheese products, I stumbled across cashew cheese and decided to give it a go. Not only is it incredibly delicious, but it is also cheap, vegan, and extremely easy to make. This entire recipe can be made in a food processor or blender, which makes it an easy option for any college student.

1. Soak, drain, and rinse the cashews 2. Place cashews, lemon juice, salt, and pepper in the food processor or blender Ingredients: 3. Pulse the blender for a minute to combine 1 cup of cashews (soaked in 3 cups of water for at least 2 ingredients hours, or as long as overnight) Tip: The longer you soak the cashews, the creamier 4. Add water, then process until smooth and creamy the cheese is! 5. Scrape down the sides of the blender and 2 teaspoons of lemon juice pulse a few more times ½ teaspoon of salt (add more if needed) 6. Add additional lemon juice, salt, or pepper, A few pinches of pepper ¼ cup of water if needed, and mix again *For more flavor, add ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder and 2 Cashew cheese will keep up to 1 week in the tablespoons of nutritional yeast* fridge in an airtight container. Enjoy! Serving Size: A little more than 1 cup

Debunking the “Freshman 15”

By Lindsay Abel As my hometown friends and I entered into our first year of college, the lurking threat of prospective weight gain entered into many of our conversations. Frankly, we were scared that the abrupt change in lifestyle was going to swiftly transform our familiar figures beyond recognition overnight. At least, that’s what the idea of the “Freshman Fifteen” communicated to us. When I first arrived at Fordham, I remember being very diligent about what I ate and how much I ate of it. Any temptation that arose from those cafeteria cookies was quickly dispelled; I was too worried by the possibility that the dessert would enable this myth to come to fruition and make itself shown. I imagine that a lot of first-year college students have felt this same way, at least in some capacity. For someone who rarely weighs herself, the notion of the “Freshman Fifteen” consumed all too much of my mind in those first months. I am writing now to relieve the current and future freshman of this burden, and how absurd it now seems in retrospect. It is important to acknowledge the obvious facts about how entering college invokes a change in diet and exercise. Many nights are spent trapped in the library with little physical activity, and the nightlife scene occasionally entails downing a few sugary drinks. At Fordham in particular, there is the ever-present allure of that pasta from Arthur Avenue. (There is, of course,

unlimited cafeteria food, but lucky for us, Fordham’s is far from gourmet). Truthfully, the culmination of these new opportunities may result in minor fluctuations in weight. However, I’m not writing to offer dieting advice. In fact, I think it is rather important to indulge in this splendor. It’s absolutely absurd to think that our bodies, and women’s especially, are to stay completely the same from the time when we are 18-year-old high schoolers to the time when we enter our twenties in college. We are still growing, changing, and adjusting. Your weight is not intended to be a static number. It may change slightly as your surroundings change, but this is nothing to fear. The idea of the “Freshman Fifteen” is toxic, and its perpetuation needs to stop immediately. It demonizes and pokes fun at the ordinary phenomena of weight change, which in turn weighs on the minds of new students who already have enough on their plate (no pun intended). So if you see your scale creeping towards an unforeseen number, know that this is normal. It is natural. It is healthy, even. This is something I’ve been able to come to terms with, and my life has been all the better since. No one’s wellness needs to be governed by an outdated and skewed myth.

Conquer Mornings One Step at a Time By Marisa Fata Let’s face it, not everyone is a morning person. The second that my obnoxious alarm starts blaring, I quite honestly want to chuck my phone across my bedroom. If you are like me and have trouble forcing yourself out of your oh-so-cozy bed, here are a few tips to overcome the morning blues. Keep your blinds slightly open. Allowing natural light to creep through your window will help signal your body to slow its melatonin production while boosting your adrenaline. A bright room also makes it a bit more difficult to fall back asleep once your alarm goes off. Who knows, maybe you won’t even need an alarm! Plan an emergency outfit. If you are someone who savors every last second of sleep, choosing your outfit the night before could save you a few Zzz’s in the morning. Although you may change your mind once the a.m. hits, having a cohesive outfit easily accessible eliminates a (sometimes stressful) step from your routine. Don’t snooze your alarm. Trust me, this is much easier said than done. After making this mistake too many times, I’ve realized that those eight extra minutes of sleep just aren’t worth it. They are a trap that can make you late with the simple press of a button; in reality, they hurt more than help. Just rip it off like a Band-Aid and get your day started the first time you hear the dreaded beeping. Get up at the same time every day. I admit, I do set my alarm differently on days when I have class at 8:30 a.m. compared to when I have class at 10:00 a.m. That sacred hour of extra sleep seems to make a world of a difference. However, switching up your wake-up calls messes with your internal clock and confuses your body. Being consistent may seem challenging at first, but it will absolutely pay off in the long run. Eat a solid breakfast. Yes, it’s a cliché, but breakfast really is the most necessary meal of the day. Giving your body a bit of fuel after fasting all night is exactly what you need to power through a busy morning until your lunch break. If breakfast’s inconvenience is your excuse, grab a quick banana, granola bar, or a yogurt for the road. Breakfast doesn’t have to be an entire buffet, but it should definitely be something substantial. Take five minutes to stretch. Stretching is an easy way to tell your body to wake up a bit faster. It will get your blood pumping, which makes you more aware and ready to take on the day. You don’t need to (and shouldn’t!) do anything as excessive as a split, but doing a few basic stretches for thirty seconds each will get the job done. So, tomorrow morning, touch your toes, do some neck circles, and roll your shoulders back before heading out the door.

Social media, which, to my understanding, was initially created for self-expression and the sharing of personalized content, has now become the platform that determines our worthiness and popularity. The majority of our generation has become so obsessed with being considered “trendy” and “fashionable” that everything we post on social media is for validation. Our profiles have become a portrayal of the life we wish to live, or the life we hope people think we live. We need to stop living our lives according to our Instagram feeds and start accepting and embracing our true identities. I’m sure we can all think of a time when we planned our outfits, attended an event, or even purchased food for the sole purpose of an Instagram post. This obsessive need for approval, likes, and comments has pervaded our minds and caused us to hesitate to show the world who we really are.

“Everything we post on social media is for validation.”

By Cameron Price Even as a 19-year-old college student, I frequently catch myself reminiscing on “the good old days” of my childhood. But as I make my way into adulthood and beyond, I can’t help but assume that “the good old days” will continue to slip further and further from my memory. Why is that, though? Haven’t I made endless new and enduring memories that could easily become “the good old days” themselves? Well, yes. However, I’ve realized that there is one key difference between my memories from childhood and my more current ones. Now, our generation has been plagued by the internet. Sure, the Web has created enormous opportunities, and our society continues to advance due to this flourishing technology. But our social lives have paid the price.

“But our social lives have paid the price.” 38

To me, the worst part of this phenomenon is that we are so worried about proving to people that we are living our lives to the fullest, we forget to actually enjoy these worthwhile moments! Concerts, lunch dates, shopping trips, and vacations are all overtaken by a little handheld device that dictates our life. Shouldn’t verbally telling someone about your latest adventure have the same level of significance that it would have if you shared it on your feed? Instead, we have become so preoccupied with capturing our life on camera that we forget about the importance of faceto-face communication. We should concentrate on being with people who make us smile, being our best selves, and being aware of our surroundings instead of focusing on our phone screens! Everyone loves a candid photo, but we go to such lengths to take them that we get to the point where they’re no longer genuine. As more and more people become aware of this social media crisis, my hope is that they come to realize that we should be aiming to use social media to break down the barriers between our society, rather than put up a front. Social media should be used to express yourself and embrace your style. It should be a platform that elevates your confidence, instead of being equated with your worth. I challenge you to live for the sake of living, rather than for your Instagram feed. And if you happen to snap a pic or two in the process, then I hope you feel bold enough to share it with the world!

Notting Hill: Much More Than a Rom-Com By Alex Richard Cue the breathtaking Julia Roberts sporting her chic black beret and tiny glasses (yes, before they were cool), and stunning smile. Next, pan to the clumsy, small-town boy— floppy-haired Hugh Grant. Everyone knows that blue door. Yep...it’s Notting Hill. Of course, Notting Hill itself marks the start of the fictional Anna Scott and William Thacker whirlwind romance. Believe it or not, Notting Hill is so much more. From the picturesque pastel buildings to the fresh farmers market that conquers the streets on the weekends, Notting Hill has much to offer. Although the blue door itself is located on Westbourne Park Road, the real action takes place on Portobello Road. Portobello Road is composed of levels. On the outskirts, before you truly turn onto the road itself, there are boutiques, thrift shops, and specialty shops. Here you can find anything from a trending mustard yellow trench coat, a 50 pence (slightly tarnished but still wearable) bangle, to pins & sunglasses & homemade shoes. Some of these shops seem cluttered and overwhelming, but they are undeniably authentic with a true brand and definable style. You enter the next level of Portobello once you cross the street and find your way around the road’s bend. Here, the first signs of color are unveiled. The houses lining the road range from pale pink to dark plum, with further evidence of colorful shops hovering invitingly in the distance. Once the cart with homemade Mulled Wine

in takeaway cups is visible, you know the antiques and souvenirs are nearby. Portobello’s antiques and souvenir level has a truly incredible range. On the antique side, there are book carts, camera gear, tea sets, and homemade jewelry. Intermingled in these gems there are plastered UK flags, Harry Potter trinkets, the Queen’s face, and even a (fake) William Thacker “Notting Hill Bookshop.” The juxtaposed space creates quite a range of customers— hipsters, tourists, and common-folk alike. Lastly, we have the Portobello “Notting Hill” Market. I attribute most of my weight gain from my semester abroad to this very market. It’s pretty easy to eat Turkish sausage & peppers, a samosa (not to be confused with a MI-mosa, a SA-mosa is a Middle Eastern savory triangular dish), fresh bread, a slice of specialty pizza, and churros with chocolate. In under 20 minutes. I wish I was kidding. For the less grotesque, health-conscious human, the market includes a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and even flowers! All this, and we haven’t even reached the blue door. In reality, the blue door is a simple apartment threshold with a surprising amount of graffiti. Some may comment, “underwhelming.” Still, my first trip to Notting Hill was inspired by this very door—without it, I would’ve never been compelled to dive through each layer and explore just what Notting Hill has to offer.
