This Americana issue is different than most. Yes, this issue celebrates the best of American fashion, beauty, and Fordham’s own Navy ROTC, but this issue also reminds us to improve. Maybe it’s because I’m a Senior about to graduate or maybe it’s because I’m just a bit too sentimental for my own good, but I think we should all leave wherever we are or wherever we may go a little better than how we found it. One thing I’ve learned in my time here at Fordham, and what Bridget reminded me of, is that no matter how great of an idea we may have, it is nothing short of impossible to achieve it alone. The differing opinions and input of others strengthen our own ideas and beliefs and give us the ability to create incredible outcomes we could not have foreseen unaccompanied. My three years on MODE have proven this to me more than anything. These issues are not possible without each writer, editor, layout designer and every member who comes to offer his or her ideas, insights and opinions along the way. I’ve never been so grateful for a singular experience than I have when looking back on my time on MODE. In the same way that I hope I have added a little something to MODE in my time as editor-in-chief that has changed it for the better, I hope that you are all able to do the same in your own way. Whether it’s using chemistry to create the best and most affordable beauty product on the market, shopping ethically to help even the smallest piece of the environment, or even if you just want to improve an old pair of jeans you have lying around. Go do it. Start small, change something in yourself, then use the rest of your four years here to change something on campus, and after that go improve something in America … because we all know we could use it. — Just don’t do it alone. As Audrey Hepburn alludes, take the hands that are there to help you, but remember to always reach back out to help someone else. Good luck Fordham, I’ll be here if you need another hand.

AMERI CANA A HOW-TO AND HOW-DID BY SEAN O’SULLIVAN WITH PHOTO BY LEXI RIZZO
Americana is the culmination of beautifully unrelated subcultures that allows for different interpretations of our heritage. While some people are quick to assume that Americana only involves wearing, red, white and blue, patriotism only scratches the surface of Americana styling. There are two categories for prep: traditional and modern. The traditional side lends itself to a more conservative and refined aesthetic. The modern side focuses on pastels, outlandish patterns, and an air of prestige. Many articles of preppy clothing could fit into either category, but their color palettes and patterns are essentially different. A simple oxford, well-fitted chinos, a canvas belt, and boat shoe are the uniform, but layering is key. Don’t be afraid to get out the color-block cardigans. Fair Isle sweaters, navy blazers, and repp ties to complete any preppy look.
“RED, WHITE, AND BLUE ONLY SCRATCHES THE SURFACE OF AMERICNA STYLING.” Western styling has two major influences: western cinema and country music. Cowboys graced the big screens for generations, evoking a desire for rough justice and an exploration of new frontiers. Think madeto-last jeans, riding boots, vests, and fringe. On the other hand, country styling also evokes the ideal summer night behind the wheel of your daddy’s pickup, accompanied by your high school sweetheart. Gear up with some loud plaids, a western hat, and maybe jorts (if you can pull them off). America was founded on hard work. Many Americans, past and present, work hands-on blue collar jobs. This includes positions like shipmates, those in the armed forces, and construction workers. Workwear is where form meets function. Olive military jackets, navy peacoats, Aran sweaters, and some durable khakis are all staples for this style.
Leather jackets, distressed denim, white T-shirts, dirty Converse, slick hair. The term greaser, though essentially defunct today, describes a look that has been admired by many and worn by few for decades. James Dean was one of the first celebrities to make the look cool, and influenced other bad boys and rock and rollers. Although the greaser look is not particularly sought after today, the argument could be made that a significant amount of modern street style is modeled off the rebellion and aesthetic of the greaser. Americana is complex and can seem difficult to pinpoint-but it’s actually rather easy to pull off. Mix and match what you like from each subculture until you find what works. Most of all, have fun.

By Connor Murray Denim is an American staple, always in style and in season. From skinny to straight, to dark or light wash, denim can be worn in a multitude of styles. However, there is a different type of denim that has been gaining immense popularity over the past ten years, becoming a staple in men’s and women’s fashion. Raw denim has been taking the fashion world by storm with its unique feel and look. Most denim is made by dipping the cotton into indigo dye and washing it immediately after. Unlike traditional denim, raw denim is not washed after dyeing, which creates a dark indigo color. Since the fabric is not washed after

It’s about time that we get a new staple print! So long, stripes and polka dots! I’ve been obsessed with the star print trend recently. Personally, I’m a basics kind of girl and I rarely venture out of neutral colors and basic tee’s, but star printed pieces easily add a rocker-chic touch to your look. I’ve seen the trend at Urban Outfitters, Wildfox Couture, MinkPink, and of course my own closet! A basic tee with a large star print or small stars all over similar to polka dots add so much more interest and character to any casual look. If you wear any kind of star-printed top with ripped black jeans and clunky boots, like Doc Martens, or sneakers, it will complete the perfect alternative and rocker vibe that has become so popular. If you want to go the more classic and minimalist route, star jewelry is a great way to work in the trend without being quite so obvious.
the dying process, the denim fades with wear, allowing the wearer to “customize” their pair through daily use. There is, however, a price for this natural fading. Many raw denim enthusiasts abstain from from washing their jeans for the first six months, allowing their jeans to break in and start to naturally fade. When it comes time to wash the jeans, many prefer to wash them by hand, allowing the wearer to clean the denim with care. Once the raw denim is first washed and hung to dry, there should be a slight change in the color of the jeans, as well as more prominent fading.
Raw denim does tend to be a bit pricier than regular denim. However, when you buy raw denim, you are getting quality and utility out of a pair of jeans you will have for years. For men, I recommend Unbranded Denim for your first pair. They offer many styles of cuts and colors, such as black and dark navy denim, for a reasonable price. Women’s raw denim can be a little bit harder to find. However, Railcar denim has great cuts that cater to women. From putting on your first pair, to washing them for the first time, to retiring them, raw denim is an item that comes to hold sentimental value with each wear.
Simple gold or silver chain bracelets and necklaces with a small star pendant are great staple pieces that you can add to your everyday jewelry. Minimalist jewelry is something that you can wear 24/7 without looking like you’re repeating your style. Star prints will obviously serve well for everyone’s favorite summer holiday, the Fourth of July! Pair a star printed t-shirt with denim shorts; tie a bandana around your neck, and top it off with some statement sunglasses, and you’re good to go!

hat if I told you that an eye-catching alternative to traditional jewelry could be found in your dad’s closet? Fashion bloggers from all over the world have been posting like crazy about necktie inspired looks by using ties and chokers. The 90’s woven choker came back in style last summer, which contributed to the grunge look everyone was going for, but recently, a more ribbon-like or bow inspired choker has been popping up in the outfits of popular fashion bloggers and celebrities. Ribbon chokers fashioned into a bow, and chokers made of twine-like material tied into a knot add a chic and more refined twist to the already popular accessory. Because summer is fast approaching, chokers can easily be paired with v-neck t-shirts, shorts, and strappy sandals. I love the contrast between the choker high up on the neck with the skin showed in the space between the choker and the t-shirt. This is a great way to add more interest to a casual, summer look. You could even wear a tied choker to the beach, if you don’t mind the risk of getting a choker tan line! Related to this, another trend on the rise is skinny ties worn as chokers. Whereas the choker pairs nicely with casual looks, the skinny tie is great at dressing up outfits for more formal occasions. Styling a skinny tie in a more feminine way is a great way to fashion a menswear inspired look and make it chic and interesting. I love to pair a black skinny tie with a simple white button down shirt, jeans, ballet flats or boots, and an oversized wool overcoat. This kind of outfit has all of the components of a menswear look, but with a feminine twist, especially when paired with minimalist jewelry and a fun bag and shoes. You can always add a skinny tie to a dress for a more formal, feminine, and put together look. If you are the kind of person that doesn’t wear a lot of jewelry, chokers and ties are a great minimalist and tomboyish option. If you’re like me and don’t see your self as a girlygirl or super feminine, this trend is effortless and laid back while adding an interesting and chic touch to any simple outfit you put together. I love how a simple accessory has the ability to be trendy and youthful, while still staying classy and timeless. This is a distinctive and eye-catching look that will most certainly be a conversation starter at summer parties.

Feeling Shady By Noelle Khan
Nothing screams summer like the ultimate pair of sunglasses. This summer is the perfect season to toss away your boring, basic sunnies in exchange for shades that are so cool no one will believe they’re under $100. From the aviator to cat-eyes in every color, the possibilities are endless!
The Fierce Cat-Eye Thick framed, over-sized cat-eye shades were made for the bold. This striking style makes an instant statement when paired against a summer-inspired bold lip. These edgy shades are perfect for girls with an oval shaped face. It makes sense why celebs like Jessica Alba and Beyoncé are always caught fiercely rocking a pair of cat-eye shades. Quay has my favorite pair. Their cat-eye shades comes in an array of colors, but the My Girl style is the most alluring with its sunset pink-colored lenses. This gorgeous pair can be purchased right on Quay’s site, but click fast because they’re almost always sold out! The Aviator Aviator sunglasses are the perfect investment because they never seem to go out of style. This forever-trending style was made for girls with a heart shaped face. If you’re unsure about whether your face is heart shaped, think Kourtney Kardashian—an aviator fanatic. Le Specs, a brand that has gained a cult following since its start in the ‘80s, offers a unique spin on the aviator style with the addition of a striking brow bar. Guys, take note! Le Specs’ aviators in the style Thunderdome are unisex, so everyone can feel free to add these sunnies to their collections. Round Sunglasses Don’t be afraid to set your eyes on the retro style made famous by the one and only John Lennon. Circle lenses are a hard pair to pull off, but if you have a square face this style was made for you. Pulling off these cool shades will instantly add a retro, ‘70s flair to any boring look. Try AJ Morgan’s assortment of round shades. This American-based brand is known for creating trend-worthy shades worn by celebs on your favorite shows like Beverly Hills 90210. Best of all, AJ Morgan’s sunnies are only $26, so you can feel guilt-free splurging on a second pair. 11 MODE | SPRING 2016
Coloring Inside the Lines Rock the minimalist look with pops of color. By Elizabeth Carr
We all know the classic black-onblack and white-on-white combinations. These stylish combos are always fashion forward. But, can this monochromatic style be taken to another level? Definitely. Any minimalist look can be changed up a bit by throwing on some colorful sneakers to contrast the neutral colors, or adding some colored tassel necklaces or a printed bag. Sticking with neutrals such as white, beige and black are always safe, but don’t be afraid to try brighter colors with the warmer weather coming! Break out that blue-on-blue and other brighter color combinations. Many choose to go for the softer look, matching lighter pastels, which allows you to rock this monochromatic look while still staying near-neutral, while still embracing spring. You can even add some bold shoes and other accessories with your neutral pastels to add a little more! This style isn’t limited to just colors; textures and different materials can be mixed together,—like denim-on-denim. One of my favorite casual looks to rock is vintage, high-waisted denim shorts with a cropped denim button-down. Trying this trend out for spring is a different way to be stylish, yet minimalistic.

FLOTUS Fashion By Kathleen Thomas
Style is not defined just by the clothes you wear. Style is emulated through your character, your confidence and your grace. These qualities are also something we look for in a First Lady. A First Lady is poised and respected, but that doesn’t mean she can’t have fun with her style. With the 2016 election right around the corner, First Lady fashion has been a hot topic. Michelle Obama has set the standard high with her effortless looks in the past eight years, from her ball gowns to her professional attire. However, let’s go back in time to a FLOTUS that not only defined the fashion world during her time, but continues to be an inspiration for us today.
Ball. Then, at the second Inauguration, she exceeded our expectations once again with a ruby Jason Wu number. Michelle’s fashion success comes from her fearlessness to try unexpected colors, patterns, necklines and silhouettes. Somehow, she always finds the perfect balance between professional and fashion-forward style. She brings this attitude to all aspects of her life, as well. Michelle isn’t just the President’s wife; she has been making waves at the White House since the beginning, especially with her focus on curbing childhood obesity. Her fashion sense expresses this independence as she is constantly sporting looks that no one would expect.
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis: Jackie O is not only iconic in American culture, but her fashion is something that is constantly mimicked and recreated to this day. From political speeches, to charity events and galas, and even just tending to her dayto-day duties at the White House, Jackie never spent a moment not styled to perfection. Whether it was her legendary pill box hat and big round shades, or her flawless dress suits, her look was ahead of its time and unquestionably chic. Before her time as First Lady, Jackie worked for a newspaper as a reporter and camerawoman. Once she was First Lady, she made it her personal mission to make the interior of the White House more memorable and unique. Her restoration of the White House is said to be an influence even to this day as it set a standard of excellence in decorating and design. Overall, Jackie O was one special lady, which made her sense of style so much more alluring.
Hillary Clinton: There’s been plenty of talk about Hillary Clinton’s policies since she announced her 2016 presidential campaign, but we need to take a minute to consider her signature style over the years. Looking at her past FLOTUS and present potential POTUS style, it becomes clear that Hillary is an under-appreciated fashion icon. Her blue and purple lace dress, worn to Bill Clinton’s first Inaugural Ball, was outstanding and unique. Unexpectedly, she went full glitz and glam, which is not the typical Hillary, but everyone loved it! From the pictures, anyone could see that she was also totally into it. Beyond that, Hillary has presented the world with some pretty chic looks, like when she courageously wore a bright orange pantsuit at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Even during this year’s election, she has gone full force with bright colored pant suits. The confidence that Hillary exudes so well through her political prowess and fashion sense is so important, especially to the generations of girls and young women who look up to her. It’s exciting to see her hone her style and really show it off with no hesitation during this election season.
Michele Obama: Michelle Obama has given us some fabulous looks. How could we ever forget her exquisiteness as she danced the night away in her billowy white Jason Wu dress at the first Inaugural 15 MODE | SPRING 2016
Ralph Lauren: Truly All American By Maddie Legg Ask anyone who has ever worn clothes, and they can tell you who Ralph Lauren is. Usually associated with preppiness, polo fields, and an all American sensibility, Ralph Lauren has been a fashion staple since he first started selling his ties at Bloomingdale’s in 1967. The man responsible for Diane Keaton’s iconic look in Annie Hall, was born here in the Bronx in 1939. Born to Jewish immigrant parents, Lauren grew up with his 3 siblings in the Mosholu Parkway area. Lauren began designing as early as the mid 1960’s, but it wasn’t until 1972 that Lauren released his now signature shirt emblazoned with the logo of a polo player. Here, in his hometown of the Bronx, you can see more than ever how Lauren’s looks are truly all Amer-
ican. While Connecticut kids have closets full of Polo, so do their friends living right here in the Bronx. A trip down Fordham Road proves it; in almost every menswear store you’ll find that little polo player somewhere. Hip-hop artists like Kanye and Jay-Z have come to wear as much Polo as Tom Brady or Scott Disick. Polo has been reclaimed as a streetwear brand, and it’s origins are as American as it gets. Lauren’s rags to riches story is echoed in those who wear his brand, and his clothes are now a symbol of the achievement of the American Dream. Whether your 4th of July is spent on a yacht or a basketball court, a Polo Ralph Lauren look is certain to be seen.

FROM CANVAS TO CLOTHING
I
t’s widely accepted that fashion is art, but what if you could wear your own art? While the whole DIY idea can be daunting, creating your own designs on clothing or accessories makes your look unique and personal. For years, I have been obsessed with painting plain black or white T-shirts with designs of my own, ranging from simple gradient patterns to outlines of Manhattan’s skyline. You only need a handful of materials and a few dollars to make your new summer staples and affordable gifts for friends. Yes, it’s true, you can find absolutely anything on Amazon. Not only can you order packs of four or five plain T-shirts, but you can also find blank canvas bags that are perfect for painting. If you’d rather make your purchases in person, any craft store like Michael’s will have the T-shirts and the fabric paint you need to make your designs. I buy men’s T-shirts, like a pack of the Hanes brand, because of their larger size and softer fabric. Personally, I prefer painting in black, white and gray, but you can find any color you choose at a craft store. Use a plastic or paper plate as a palette, and dig up some old craft paintbrushes on your next trip home from school. Depending on how many shirts or other accessories you buy, this DIY could be less than $20, making it a great low budget project to create a unique style.
By Veronica Moyer
After gathering all your materials, find a design that inspires you. This could be any type of image, but personally I find that New York City is the ideal place to find inspiration. Mimic an interesting mural you saw while strolling through the streets of Little Italy or the Bowery. If painting an actual piece of art is too ambitious, try to find a simple design such as a cluster of small birds or an outline of a skyscraper. The key to finding an idea is to let it evolve; don’t get discouraged if your painting doesn’t come out just right! Just keep painting until you like the look. Before I start painting my T-shirts, I usually like to use scissors and cut the neck so it’s wider and less restricting. Feel free to also cut the bottom of the shirt, as men’s T-shirts could be a little longer than women’s. While painting on your T-shirt or canvas bag, make sure to use some heavy object, such as a paperweight or your unused textbook, to weigh down the edges of the fabric to ensure there are no wrinkles. If you want your design to be more precise, use a pencil to outline before you lay down the paint. Whether you prefer to stay inside the lines or meander outside, the end product will be a unique way to show off your own talent and interests while still looking put-together and fashion forward.
DIY: High Waisted Thrifted Shorts A By Noelle Khan
pair of distressed high-waisted shorts that slip on like a glove should be a staple piece in every girl’s summer wardrobe. This favorite summer item can be dressed down for a lazy day at the beach or dressed up with a pair of your favorite chunky wedges. Slipping into the perfect pair of high-waisted shorts sounds ideal, but first you need to find the best pair for your body. Instead of blowing all your summer cash on a designer pair, look for an old pair of vintage jeans at your favorite thrift shop. Even better, borrow an old pair from your mom’s closet. With these DIY tips and tricks, you’ll be on your way to customizing your best pair of high-waisted shorts ever!
Step 1: Time to Go Thrifting
Before making your personalized shorts, you need to find the perfect pair. Luckily, you’re only a train ride away from thrift stores, like Goodwill and Buffalo Exchange, that carry inexpensive, good-quality “mom jeans.” The best pair of jeans to opt for are a pair of high-waisted Levi’s because the quality of the denim will give you that vintage, worn-in look.
Step 2: Measuring Time
Once you’ve purchased your jeans, it’s time to take them home and mark them up. Measuring the length you’d like your shorts to be is a super important step since you’re aiming for high-waisted shorts not a pair of daisy dukes. Grab a marker and place a tick mark about two inches from the crotch. Use a ruler or tape measure, place it at the tick mark and draw a straight line at an angle. Cut across the diagonal line and, once cut, fold over the cut side and use it as a guide to cut the remaining side. Once both sides are cut, cut about two inches away from the crotch on the front sides so your shorts appear longer in the back.
Step 3: Time to DIY
Step 3 is the fun part because you finally get to personalize your shorts. You can opt to cuff the bottoms of your shorts and iron them in place, or grab a pair of tweezers and fray the ends for the ultimate vintage look. Pulling strands of threads with your tweezers is a tedious step, but definitely worth the result. If you’re feeling crafty, go ahead and use a pair of scissors to cut slits on the back or front sides of your jeans, and use your tweezers again to create a distressed look.
Step 4: Style Them
Whether you’ve opted for a light or dark wash, your DIY jeans will become your new obsession this summer. Pair these vintage high-waisted shorts with a tucked-in graphic T-shirt for an edgier vibe, or a high neck crop top and high-top sneakers for a casual day look. No matter how you choose to wear them, you’ll be sure to get a lot of compliments this summer; best of all you didn’t break the bank on your trendy shorts! SPRING 2016 | MODE

CLOGGING UP YOUR CLOSET By: Christine Henderson Photograph by: Mikaela Surace
I
t’s what we’ve all been waiting for…a suitable, chic, and most importantly, comfortable alternative to heels! Clogs are the perfect shoe to pair with a laid-back, bohemian look, while still getting that extra height, and adding some interest to your spring and summer outfits. I know that the first thing you’ll think of when you hear the word clog will be a traditional yellow Dutch clog with the painted tulips on top, but there are actually a vast array of chic and stylish clogs out there that will look great with your spring and summer wardrobe. Last summer it was all about the Birkenstocks as the bohemian footwear of choice. However, later in the summer I noticed that clogs were on the rise in stores like Free People and Urban Outfitters. Unfortunately, the trend never really took off because the fall season was fast approaching, and therefore, it was time to bring out the boots and sneakers. This spring and summer, I have great hope that the trend will come full force into the fashion headlines. Clogs are a great way to stick to the bohemian vibe, but in a more refined and put together way. Picture any Free People outfit; clogs would go great with any summer-y look that they sell. Wear clogs with a dress, short or maxi, to a casual summer wedding, a graduation, or a summer cookout. For a more casual look, you can pair clogs with denim shorts and a flowy top; add some statement jewelry pieces and a pair of trendy sunglasses and your good to go! Clogs are great transition shoes as summer turns to fall. As the weather gets cooler, a denim jacket and cuffed or raw-end jeans will look great with clogs. I definitely plan on investing in some clogs to add into my spring and summer footwear rotation. Don’t be afraid to mix it up and step out of your sandal comfort zone!

Ethical Shopping By Elizabeth Carr
We all know that it’s hard to be fashion-forward while still trying to be ethical. This is especially hard on a college student’s budget when so many of the ethical brands that we hear of are luxury brands that don’t exactly fit into our budget. But, isn’t it still important to know what exactly it is we are wearing? Knowing the clothing or accessory you purchased was made ethically—including environmentally friendly, hand-made, Fair Trade and so many more aspects—is not only important, but proves that you can support some great causes while still pulling off the latest trends. Here are a few brands to check out that do exactly that:
Zady Helpsy: Card Set - $10
Zady is a brand that is all about quality and ethical business. They call this “The New Standard.” Zady is such an awesome brand to check out because, when you buy their products, you can be totally confident that they were made ethically—not just in terms of the people who made them, but for the environment too. Tip: Check out their super cute sneakers that are perfect for spring! They’re made from 30% recycled PET and 70% organic cotton from Brazil.
Helpsy Zady: Taua Bahia - $89
Helpsy’s motto“Ethical Style That’s Dope,” is just one reason why this brand is one to check out. Their goals include creating apparel, home goods and tech accessories that are “as cool as they are eco-friendly and ethically produced.” They pride themselves on having super unique and trendy products that are often made from recycled materials, made in America or are eco-friendly.
Mate the Label
Mate the Label creates everything in L.A. and they check in on their factories on a weekly basis to see how things are going. Not are all their products are made in America, but they pride themselves on their small environmental footprint as well. I’m personally obsessed with their vintage style graphic tank tops!
Mate the Label: ALWAYS GO Andi Tee - $68
Helpsy: CIBI Pillow - $95
Helpsy: Gold Round Cross Body - $78

The Bronx Open By Andrew Julian & Jack Turner
It’s a typical spring Friday night. The sounds of a weekend parade of college students echo across the Rose Hill campus. Some students are leaving for the bars, while others are returning home, but two friends stand alone in the shadow of Keating under the glow of the full moon. Unlike their peers, these two have other plans for the night: a round of golf. Armed with one club each, they face off in an intense competition over nine holes, scattered across the entire campus grounds. Who are these two individuals? They’re seniors Andrew Julian and Jack Turner.
Over the past four years, this scenario has occurred many times. Our spontaneous golf outings have grown into a seasoned tradition, which we have affectionately dubbed “The Bronx Open.” Given our confined campus and urban environment, we express our love for the game by dressing head-to-toe in our finest golf attire and playing a round of midnight golf. Our choice of attire represents both traditional and modern golf fashion, respectively. Jack represents the older, more traditional fashion in a matching jacket, and cap of wool and tweed. Andrew wears athletic Under Armour pants, a collared shirt, an argyle sweater and a contemporary golf cap. While our styles are from different eras, we both share an appreciation for golf’s culture and history, as well as our country’s contribution to the sport. Golf is a unique sport in that the athlete is able to express themselves not only in their athletic abilities, but also in the manner in which they chose to dress. This gives the athlete almost complete control as to the fashion statement they wish to flaunt. The sport and its fashion have evolved in tandem over the years, arriving at the modern styles that are worn by the sport’s current greats.

Thanks to ”The Bronx Open,” we’ve experienced our campus in a way that few students have. We’ve been fortunate enough to find a unique aspect of Fordham for ourselves through the heat of competition and our shared passion for golf. This has created memories we will share for the rest of our lives. However, our aim is not to convert people to golf, but rather to encourage others to forge their own lasting memories. We hope all readers, whether they be golf fans or not, will find a sense of appreciation or at least some amusement from reading about our tradition and our sport. Everyone should take advantage of their time at Fordham, and find their own unique ways to express their passions.
“Fitspo” has taken over social media feeds with gym selfies and post-workout photos. Barre classes and SoulCycle sessions are now in high demand. Karlie Kloss and other top models tried boxing and so did their followers. Fitness is trending in real life, while sequins and layers are trending on the runways. The two aren’t completely unrelated, though, and designers are incorporating fitness-inspired apparel into their runway collections. Going to the gym has become an exercise of street style in action and there is a different look for every fitness occasion. For spin classes, opt for tight athletic pieces that won’t get caught on the bike. I love the look of simple black leggings with a fitted graphic tank top. SoulCycle offers its own apparel that perfectly adheres to the aforementioned look. As the weather gets warmer, running outside is a better option than the treadmill for most. With that in mind, metallic track shorts—like the silver ones that appear in Rebecca Minkoff ’s collection— and a plain white T-shirt update the traditional bright shorts and old graphic T-shirt combo you’re used to seeing at the gym. In addition to high-intensity physical exercise, workouts with a spiritual aspect, like yoga, have increased in popularity. In terms of acceptable apparel, tight clothing is once again optimal in order to hold your focus on that downward dog, rather than worrying that your sports bra might be showing. To amp up your yoga style, choose leggings and a fitted tank top in bright colors and patterns to reflect the positivity in your practice. Rebecca Minkoff recently launched an athleisure collection that includes everything from sports bras to windbreakers. The aesthetic features black and cranberry, as well as a few token silver items. My favorite piece from the collection is a motorcycle jacket in an athletic fabric, perfect for throwing on after the gym. Similarly, Alexander Wang x H&M showcased oversized sweatshirts and color-blocked leggings in gray and black. The line portrayed the clothes with an underlying boxing tendency, which could also translate into post-gym attire. The wide range of designers entering the athleisure market will ensure that your gym experience is chic from pre- to post-workout. In addition to high-end designers putting their creative twist on fitness apparel, brands like lululemon and Lorna Jane have begun utilizing bold patterns and untraditional silhouettes to revamp their basic pieces. Athleisure is no longer just a stylish way to run errands, but the stylish way to actually run. How To Get Stellar Skin This Summer! 1. Make a routine! Personally, I like to use a quick, light and easy face cleanser in the morning when I’m getting ready for the day—maybe micellar water or some facial wipes. At the end of the day, I use a makeup remover and then a more heavy duty cleanser to wash off all my makeup and any impurities on my skin. I like to alternate between a gel cleanser and a gentle exfoliant to keep my skin hydrated! I then apply a toner all over my face, and then moisturize after the toner has dried! 2. Stick to that routine! I know that on some of those late nights, the last thing you want to do is spend time washing and moisturizing your face when your cozy bed is waiting for you. But, the only way to get consistent results, is to put in consistent work. Your skin will thank you for staying on schedule! 3. Know what kind of skin you have! If your skin tends to get oily and shiny, make sure your skincare products are oil-free and pore-clearing. If you get dry patches frequently and your skin looks flaky, lean more towards products that are hydrating and nourishing. If you’re unlucky, like me, and have both oily and dry sections on your face, keep your eye out for products made for combination skin; they’re formulated to hydrate where it’s dry and soak up oil where it’s shiny! 4. Don’t forget about the rest of your skin! Keep your whole body scrubbed and

I know it’s a pain to apply and reapply, and you feel all slippery for a little while afterwards. Just know that your skin will thank you. You really don’t want to have to deal with all the consequences of sun damage later in life. From sun spots to skin cancer, none of it is worth a temporary tan. The good news is that a lot of makeup now has SPF in it, which can keep your face safe on a day to day basis! 6. Go sunless! If you absolutely have to get a tan this summer, consider getting it from a bottle! Self-tanners have come a long way since the orangey hands and streaky skin days. There are gradual tanners that slowly fade you into a bronzed goddess and immediate ones that shrink a week in the Bahamas into one single application. 7. Don’t be afraid to splurge! Instead of picking up that pricey new eye shadow palette or your tenth red lipstick, consider spending a little more on your skincare! As long as you have healthy skin, your makeup will look awesome whether it’s high end or from a drug store. I like to pick out a nice new skincare item every once in a while to include in my rotation of products. Even if you only use it once a week, your fancy moisturizer will keep you feeling (and looking) awesome!
Gym To Work By Taylor Mead
When it comes down to it, it’s easy to make excuses for
why not to go to the gym and much more difficult to convince yourself to just do it. As college students, even the most conditioned athletes have trouble staying motivated at times. When you have school work, classes, an internship and/or part-time job, it’s expected you’ll choose a moment to relax over an hour at the gym. Finding the right balance in our busy schedules is no easy feat. More often than not, we convince ourselves that our excuses are legitimate. Sometimes, they are, but not always. My go-to excuse? “If I go to the gym now, I won’t have enough time to shower before heading to class, so it looks like a no-go.” Not going to the gym because you won’t have enough time to shower is no longer a legitimate excuse. From this moment on, sweat will not stop you from looking presentable when you get to work or class—not because you avoided burning your glutes on the bike or breaking your arms weight-lifting, but because the following tips will teach you how to go from the gym to work...flawlessly.
1. Wear a headband
This one goes for both guys and girls. If you have longer hair and don’t want to leave the gym looking like a wet dog, it’s a good idea to keep it away from your face using a headband. Choose one that absorbs sweat, like Firstline’s Dri Sweat headbands, which keep perspiration from drenching your hair and making
2. Wash your face thoroughly
Once your workout is done, head to the bathroom and clean yourself up. Since your face is arguably one of the most important parts to keep fresh, washing it immediately will make you feel cleaner before you even get to steps 3-5. I personally use L’Oreal Go 360° Clean Deep Facial Cleanser for Sensitive Skin, which only costs $4.99 at any local drugstore. The built-in face scrublet makes it easy to carry on the go.
Laid-back Is The New Black: Athleisure Revolution G
By Nicole Manouselis
ood news ladies, your gym attire of leggings and sneakers can now be worn from morning ‘til evening! The new athleisure trend, which stems from the two root words “athlete” and “leisure,” calls for the mixing of sportswear with everyday pieces so that one’s outfit can be taken from the gym to the street anytime of the day. In a time in which people are busy with class, clubs and staying healthy, tackling it all is something that every-one strives to accomplish. Leading a healthy lifestyle is just as important as looking on point, so what could be better than doing both? The athleisure look, which combines athletic wear with casual everyday wear, creates a cute and sporty look anyone can pull off. Even if you’re not big on hitting the gym and shopping is typically your cardio, this trend is still perfect for you.
3. Keep wipes, deodorant, and dry shampoo in your bag
It’s not only important that you look decent after the gym, but that you smell and feel good too. Using the wipes you keep in your bag, clean any areas or crevices that feel extra sweaty (i.e. armpits, lower back, nape of the neck, under-boob, etc.). Then, apply deodorant. If you’re feeling extra hygienic, use any brand of dry shampoo to absorb some of the sweat your headband might have let slip.
4. Bring a change of clothes
You don’t have to pack your nicest suit or best dress, but consider bringing some cotton trousers, joggers or an airy skirt. These pieces can be dressed up with a button-down shirt and some slip-on shoes, like loafers or flats. They will allow your body to breathe, so nothing sticks to you as you cool down from your gym-high. You’ll be able to feel relaxed and comfortable as the day goes on.
5. Apply only the essential makeup products
If you don’t wear makeup, you can stick to steps 1-4, but if you’re someone like me who feels incomplete without a little mascara, it won’t hurt to take a few of your favorite products with you. Focus on two or three products, so your gym routine doesn’t take longer than your normal one. Try a three-in-one product, like Olay Tinted Moisturizer or CoverGirl BB Cream, which act as a light foundation, sunscreen and moisturizer. Then, add a little Estée Lauder mascara and Benefit Cosmetics’ Hydrating Tinted Lip Balm to complete the look.
The frequency of wearing sports-wear outside of the gym has seriously increased over the last few years. Big name designers are taking note that people, especially college students, are taking com-fort into account when choosing their outfit for the day. They are jumping on this trend by collabo-rating with sportswear companies. Such partnerships include Stella McCartney with adidas and Ri-hanna with Puma. Even the oh-so preppy Tory Burch is jumping on the trend with her new collection of athletic wear entitled “Tory Sport,” which includes white tennis dresses, yoga pants and stylish zip-up track jackets. Oversized T-shirts, hoodies, track pants, leggings and baseball hats are all staple items that can be rotated into your daily outfits to create comfy and cool looks. Many celebrities have taken to this look, including models Hailey Baldwin, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner. Hailey Baldwin has been spotted numerous times during New York Men’s Fashion Week, rocking a slick athleisure aesthetic that includes an oversized char-coal bomber, black leggings and running sneakers. Brands such as Nike, Kith, adidas and Champion offer high quality athletic wear for affordable prices. Jogger sweats and adidas trackpants are pieces that are trendy, but don’t break the bank and pair perfectly with a solid colored T-shirt. This outfit also looks great layered with a bomber jacket, like the one Baldwin has been seen sporting, or even a leather one if you’re feeling edgy. Baseball hats and mirrored sunglasses also contribute to the sporty and sleek look, and definitely help out for when you’re not having the best hair day. Solid color hats with small logos, such as baseball team hats, or Polo Ralph Lauren hats in pastel colors look great for an athleisure look. Lastly, a fresh face is the key to completing any ath-leisure look. Hop on the trend and rock your sportswear all day long; you won’t regret it.

INTERNATIONAL BEAUTY PRODUCTS By Caterina Bonmassar
International beauty brands don’t tend to get the credit they deserve. While many of these companies have their own distinctive personalities, they aren’t well-known in the U.S. I’ve searched through my own beauty products, and interviewed friends and relatives abroad about what their favorite brands are. I’ve come up with a list of brands from around the world that you may not know, but should!
Kiko Milano Kiko Milano is an Italian-based cosmetic company founded in Milan that features high quality products at an inexpensive price. There is a wide range of colors and textures among the cosmetics, so there are many options to choose from. All of their products are hypoallergenic, so if you have sensitive skin or eyes, you don’t need to worry. Kiko Milano is budget-friendly and keeps up with current trends.
The Blue Lagoon products feature silicon white mud from the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa attraction in Iceland. Their body creams and scrubs are made from natural minerals from the lagoon to nourish, cleanse and exfoliate skin.

Nivea & Labello
This German makeup company keeps everything natural. Most of the products contain natural oils, vitamins and herbal extracts from various fruits, flowers and other plants. On their website, the ingredients are always listed next to the product to show you what natural and holistic ingredients are in these cosmetics.
Both Nivea and Labello are made by the same German company, Beiersdorf AG, and they are my favorites for all things skin care. Nivea is more common in the U.S. and their lotions are my go-to. Especially in the wintertime, their cream provides nourishment and moisture to dry skin. Similarly, the Labello lip balm provides a perfect amount of shine while still protecting from dryness and the sun.

Hey You! Are You Boy Crazy? By: Alexandra Richard
You know that one friend? The one who chatters for hours about the guy she saw in the café for three minutes, who does a double take every time a boy passes, who has a code name for about every guy on campus? If this all seems unfamiliar I hate to break it to you, but you may be the boy crazy friend. It’s okay--take a deep breath. The first step is admitting you have a problem. If you’re still unsure whether or not you’ve fallen victim to this role, here’s some telltale of someone who is boy crazy. Do you... Find yourself obsessing over guys you’ve just met? Really think about this one. Ask yourself, how long have you known the kid you “love”? A week? Spend your time on your appearance for guys? Look great and be confident for you. Constantly talk about guys? Listen if your fiends make audible groans every time you mention, yet another, boy. Plan your future with someone who doesn’t know you exist? Daydreaming is acceptable, but let’s not get carried away here. Like a different guy every week? Variety is good; countless obsessions are not. Never consider a guy you meet just a friend? Not every single guy you meet is “more-than-friend” material. Move from guy to guy like you’re trying to beat a record? I promise, it’s not a competition. It’s okay to take your time! Hunt for a boyfriend? Yes, this may be the ultimate goal for many, and that’s completely ok! However, something forced never ends well. Let things take their course and whatever happens, happens. Don’t get me wrong, we’re all a little boy crazy! There’s no shame in having a crush or two, but it’s best to take a step back if you find the majority of these points relating to yourself. There are fine lines between interest and obsession, perusing and stalking. Don’t stress it because, in the end, boys are just boys.

T h e M i n i m a l i s t A p p r o a c h t o R o m a n c e By Adam Seighman Following a particularly late and relatively action-packed Saturday night, I was tasked with contributing an article on romance. Being a very firm proponent of minimalism, I have over the course of many years developed a work ethic based on that principle. What I mean to say is that in order to avoid any heavy dose of thinking on my own, I asked for five points to discuss. What is to follow in this article is the split-second decision to make my deadline by creating the minimalist approach to romance articles.
Pro or Anti-Tinder?
When To Swipe Right By Alexandra Miceli & Maddie Legg We asked some Fordham students for their thoughts on Tinder, and they weren’t shy. Here are some dos and don’ts for playing the Tinder game. All responses are kept anonymous to protect the innocent ;) Male responses: “Instant yes if the girl is attractive” “No if they’re too over the top political” “If her bio is funny or witty that’s a huge plus” “Girls messaging first is cool, sometimes I feel too aggressively creepy” Female responses: “Bios are a huge factor, keep it short and sweet” “I’m over bucket hats, but that’s just me” “Watch out if he has a baby in his photos, becuase you can’t tell if it’s his baby, and I’m not trying to mess with that” “Don’t post all group photos. If I can’t figure out who you are I won’t bother”
Doesn’t matter. Connection is connection. There’s that song that goes something like Swipe safe and have fun! “Looking for love in all the wrong places,” and I don’t think that applies to Tinder per se, but it’s sort of like trying to fall in love in a bar. Sure it happens, but usually you just go to kill time. Best date spot at Fordham? I find that there’s nothing more romantic than the sweet smell of Jesuit values in the air. Take your man/woman/ whomever to the University Church. Let them imagine what it would be like to stand there and marry you. Give them a moment to absorb the gravity of potentially committing your entire life to another human being. Take their hands, look deep into their eyes, and bare your mortal soul to them at the altar of God. Or DeLillos. DeLillos is nice, too.
Best date spot ever?
It seems as though every article on the topic is very fixated on “making the date memorable.” To me, that has nothing to do with the spot. A boring person is going to be boring, even at the most interesting of date locations. Worry more about that. Just relax, they’re going to love you. You’re a total catch. Trust me. Thoughts on Bootycalls? 215-589-3465
Thoughts on the Friendzone?
Alright, here’s one that gets me. The much easier way to describe the concept is by calling it what it is. It’s just friendship. Be friends with somebody if it works, but if the burning passion to be with them and only them won’t fade into the annals of your once-painful past and the ghost of what could have been hangs heavy in the fleeting moments of blissful congress with their otherworldly presence, then don’t be friends with them. Go to Tinder. Or a bar. Find some sweet young thing to take to DeLillos someday on the way to the Church. SPRING 2016 | MODE

Bridget Brennan An American Girl By Alexandra Miceli Photos by Emma DiMarco & Maddie Legg
31 MODE | SPRING 2016
Originally born right here in New York, Bridget Brennan is now a native of the Golden State. Bridget is an incredibly impressive Senior here at Rose Hill who is also an RA in the West Wing in Ohare Hall. However impressive Bridget is, she is still just like the rest of us in that her favorite places to be are in some comfy shoes or her bed, although she is equally as comfortable in a power-pants suit as she carries out her day’s work for the White House. That’s right - the White House. Bridget is currently an advanced associate for the Whitehouse for which she interned in DC over the Summer, but she is better suited to tell you the rest. “Before I was working at the Whitehouse as an advanced associate I was at the Clinton association and before that I was at a non profit called Generation Citizen. But as an intern over the Summer and lived in DC it was the best. I got to go into the office every day which was incredible. Once that ended they asked me to stay on as the associate part-time during school. So how that works — whenever the president travels, wherever he goes they send out a team of staffers a week before to get everything ready. I work with secret service, press, White House press medical units, local hosts local, guests all of that. We just need to get everything ready for him so when he comes it’s like clockwork how it runs. he has very limited time and we have to make sure we’re utilizing it in the best way. so it’s a lot of fun but it’s a lot of stress. in one week there are so many things that have to get done there are dozens of moving parts that some how eventually come all together on the day he comes which we call “Game Day.” I’ve been fortunate that I’ve been able to go on five trips since August so that’s been great but hard to balance that and school and jobs on campus and all of that so I’m excited to graduate and pursue this full time.”
What’s your favorite part of the job?
Meeting the every day people. It was so much fun to be in the office and be on campus across from the west wing that was really special, but in a different way. With what I do, I like that you’re out of that element. You’re beyond the gates of the white house and you’re seeing everyday people and hearing their stories. Each visit is really important - it’s to drive a part of the president’s mission out to the public and to the press. My favorite trip was actually out to Newark, New Jersey the president went last October to go visit a halfway house and Rutgers school of law to talk about mandatory minimums. That whole week I got to work with the people who were in this halfway house and hear their stories and see them getting to talk and meet with the people who got to meet and talk with the president about their mission. That was the best thing ever, really I have such a special place in my heart now for Newark now. A great moment was the night before gameday we were there super late. We were on our feet all day and the word had gotten around that he was coming and everyone was so excited. These three really big 30 year old guys had been working on this welcome banner and they came in — all of them had just been recently released from prison in the last three months — they came in carrying the sign and were so delicately decoupaging this banner with little letters and little stars with “Welcome President Obama.” They were these big men covered in tattoos but it was like little kids on Christmas Eve getting ready for the big day the next day. I eventually had to step out of the room I was getting so choked up. moments like that you just don’t get when you’re in the office.
What are you studying?
I’ve been studying political science and history with concentrations in women’s studies and urban studies. I figured I would be poly-sci and I loved my intro to poly-sci class so I knew that, but it wasn’t until I took some random core classes that I loved — some theology classes, some sociology classes, and a great history class that kind of solidified those other components. I’m really happy I had that exposure as part of Fordham in its Jesuit liberal arts education and all that, I’m really into it.
Are you planning on bringing those as focuses into what you’re doing?
Yes and no. Some events are really general like I’ve done some PNC fundraisers and things like that but I’ve been really fortunate that a majority of my trips have actually been focused on criminal justice reform which is a huge thing for me so yea. I think that specifically is something I would love to focus on more in the future.
What are you involved with on campus?
Being an RA in the West Wing is the biggest ting for me. I was a student in the West Wing when I was a sophomore and when the year was ending Dean Parmach approached me Dr. Hume asked me to help coordinate and kind of revamp the program and I’m super into that. That has been my biggest thing the past two years. It’s a group of 35-40 sophomores we’re all studying different things — Gabelli, Rose Hill, Communications, Biology the works, but they’re all kind of interested politics and public service. They take a once a week class that focuses on that and ties that back to Jesuit ideals and that sort of leadership that there’s a responsibility in all of us to the common good. There are community service requirements and we all live together and take that class together so it’s really special and they’re great. I’ve been a part of college Democrats for the past four years, and been on the e-board for three years. I was the Freshman lesion and the past three years I’ve actually been the Vice President. We’ve done some awesome things with it, we’ve done a lot locally with councilman Ritchie Torres who is a Bronx assemblyman and Michael Blake, they’ve both been big time people in the club. We’ve also had former speech writer for President Obama, Jon Favreau, come this Fall. That was an awesome program - full house in Keating First. We also had Ezra Klein of Fox. com he’s also a contributor on MSNBC. As VP it’s been a really fun job everyone jokes that I’m the Joe Biden of the group who just says weird things and they love giving me a hard time about that. Being involved in all those events and the weekly meetings it’s just fun to bounce ideas off of people and the three of us all have such different opinions. Even though we come under this umbrella of Democrats it’s cool to engage with people who don’t always think the same as you and the same goes with college Republicans with our debates and things like that. I think it’s gotten to a great place over the past four years. College Democrats and college Republicans can get kind of messy sometimes, but I’ve met a lot of great people through it. We’re all very civil now which is a good thing because you need civility in politics.
Did something specific spark your interest?
There were two things. One, I got involved sophomore year with a non-profit, Generation Citizen, they go in to under-served schools in low income communities. They go in and send in students like us to go teach a civics class to high schoolers. I got involved in that and taught a semester long civics course to twenty high schoolers and it was great because at least for civics and politics classes you learn by memorizing usually just verbatim information but things like math and science you learn by doing a math problem or a science experiment. This class really tried to focus on getting them involved in the process so it wasn’t just what are the three branches of government or how does a bill become a law but by the end of the semester they had written and submitted a proposal to the department of education on ways to revamp the zero tolerance policy in schools in an effort to reduce gang related violence around their campus. My first or second week on the job there had been a stabbing around campus over a drug deal gone bad between two gangs.
What made you get into politics?
I come from a family where politics were always part of the conversation. The Brennan family is a big Irish Catholic Liberal family and my parents and my grandparents, from a young age, instilled in me a sense of justice and fairness and all of that taught me to have and form an opinion and why that mattered. They taught me that political issues aren’t just that, they’re often moral issues like education immigration, and equal opportunity. They affect all people — people like us and people all over the country. That’s why I got interested and then when I got older I became more politically active (like working on campaigns) and I learned that not only having an opinion but doing something about it wasn’t just a potential career path
What are your thoughts on modern politics?
It’s definitely an interesting time, especially regarding this presidential race, and at times it’s been kind of scary, but I have been really excited to see so many people our age get involved in the process not only having an opinion and being an active part of it. I would love to see more young people to get involved because it’s going to be up to our generation to solve problems like climate change and immigration and access to education, reforming gun legislation, reforming social security, and so may other things. It’s gonna be on us and I’d love to see trend continued.
How about your thoughts for the future?
I want to continue to work for this president for the rest of his administration, but it does have an end date, and I will be out of this job. I hope that whatever I’m doing after it’s a job that I’m not only trying to do well but trying to do good for others. The whole political sphere is going to look very different in the next couple months so I think I’m just going to wait it out. I think life has a funny way of working out.
Who inspires you who drives you?
“We always have to remember that wherever you are today there are so many other people that helped you get there and you have to remember to pay it forward and to make sure that . . . you’re giving someone a shot one day because you were once that person or kid that needed it.”
Second, and outside of Fordham comes back to my parents they’ve been my biggest inspiration. They both have always done whatever they can to help me pursue my dreams and it hasn’t always been easy. In 2006 my dad was diagnosed with a rare genetic autoimmune disease that tries to shut down your organs from the inside out. The doctor thought he had maximum eight years to live. My mom was definitely the glue that stuck it all together during that time. My dad was fortunate enough he had a pretty good job and good health insurance but the problem was that he was in and out of the hospital and the job was killing him. Working the long hours and the commuting kept putting him back into the hospital, but he couldn’t leave the job because of his health insurance was tied to his job and he couldn’t get new insurance because he had a pre-existing condition. The affordable care act helped play a role very significantly in my family’s life and ever since then my dad has been able to stop working and focus on getting healthy. This June it will be ten years since his original diagnoses and he s been doing pretty well. It’s pretty awesome now that i get to work for the president a man who had such an influential part in that act that provided protection to millions of Americans including my dad.
Her Last Word:
Bridget’s Style Advice:
I like to keep it cute and comfortable, but I think it’s true what they say to dress for the job you want not for the job you have. When I’m on trips and I have my pant suit on and I have my earpiece in they think that I’m a secret service agent. I think it’s funny and in most sense people are more likely to take direction from someone they think is an agent than someone who is a twenty-two year old student still trying to figure it all out herself.
I’ve been really fortunate to be able to have my dream job and it’s been a lot of fun but along the way there have been so many people who have helped me get there. There are plenty of smarter and harder working people who might want this job but it’s really been a few people, like a teacher who took an interest in you or a mentor who gave you a shot, a supervisor, or a colleague who wrote you a letter of recommendation. Those people make such a huge difference and I think that needs to be more of an aspect of everybody’s life. The president gave a speech in the 2012 campaign, “You didn’t build that” and he got a lot of heat for it, but I think he was right in some sense. We’re all in this together and especially in a Jesuit institution we always have to remember that wherever you are today there are so many other people that helped you get there and you have to remember to pay it forward and to make sure you’re a mentor for someone, that you’re inspiring someone or you’re giving someone a shot one day because you were once that person or kid that needed it.
“Do You Even Listen to That Band?” By Katie Konfino Places to find awesome band T-shirts:
The struggle of being “that girl” who wears band T-shirts of bands she doesn’t even listen to is real. I have felt this pain and, if you are a girl who loves this trend, I’m sure you have had this problem. Last spring and summer, I bought a ton of vintage band T-shirts. I also picked through my mom and dad’s old shirt collections, and decided to incorporate some of their pieces into my own wardrobe. If you know me, you know how much I love wearing jeans/denim shorts, and a T-shirt. This particular look is perfect for those spring N.Y.C. days spent in Washington Square Park and at summer BBQs. I recently decided to listen to the bands that I wear on my shirts –from Aerosmith to the Rolling Stones. Here are a few ways to make the people who ask the question “Do you even listen to that band on your T-shirt?” regret opening their mouth.
Step one: Buy or rent the movie “Almost
Urban Outfitters, $39.00
Famous.” This movie forever changed my outlook on rock bands, and let’s be real Kate Hudson’s style is killer. This movie will actually make you want to go to iTunes and find the movie soundtrack. From your new Lynyrd Skynard to Led Zeppelin, to David Bowie T-shirt, this movie has it all. Plus, you get ‘70s outfit inspiration. I would take Kate Hudson’s curly hair and fluffy jacket in a second. Rent the movie in HD for $3.99 from Amazon.com.
Step two: Grab the aux cord. Driving
to the beach or taking the train to the city? Create a Spotify playlist of your current hits, but throw in a few oldies but goodies. If you own a Guns N’ Roses T-shirt, try listening to “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door.” Or, if your Dad gave you his old Eagles T-shirt, –try giving “Hotel California” a listen.
Step three: Go to a record store.
Brandy Melville, $28.00
Visit Academy Records and CDs at 12 W 18th St. Record stores have a vibe that can make you want to transport back in time. Plus, think of the cool Instagram opportunities that can be found in a record store. Bring some friends and a Polaroid and listen to that band on your T-shirt!
Step four: So you’ve tried steps one through three, but you still don’t love the bands on your shirt? That’s totally alright, rock it anyway and don’t listen to anyone’s inquiries about your experience. Band T-shirts are comfy and stylish all the time, so go out and rock them.

America on BroadwaY By Victor Riccio
This Broadway season has been a great triumph for the theater world. If you don’t see at least one show this season, you’re definitely missing out! One aspect that most of the shows have in common this year is that most celebrate unity and America. Some of these shows, however, were short lived on Broadway. Two shows that deserve recognition are Amazing Grace and Spring Awakening. Amazing Grace is the story of how the song by the same name came to be. Spring Awakening is the coming-of-age story about children in 1890s Germany, discovering who they are both mentally and physically. The twist with this production is that half of the cast is deaf. Therefore, songs and dialogue are expressed through sign language. This company brought a whole new level of emotion to an already extremely moving show. Even though Spring Awakening did not celebrate America like Amazing Grace did, it expressed unity amongst all people. This production brought together people who wouldn’t normally work together, and brought forth a new perspective and awareness to the deaf community. These two shows and several others have already closed, but don’t worry! There are still so many unbelievable shows to see. The Color Purple truly celebrates America. This show tells the story of an African-American woman living in the south in the early 20th century. She struggles with horrifying abuse and hard-
ship. The music is spectacular and introduces a new perspective on a classic. This show also projects how far we have gone as a country and how unity and friendship can help through any difficulty in life. Now, if you can only see one show this season, try with all your might to go see Hamilton. This musical tells the story of one of the founding fathers of America, Alexander Hamilton. In this show you’ll see Hamilton struggle with love, time and his goal of trying to create a name and a legacy for himself. The music is in no way classical Broadway. The show uses rap, hip-hop and pop, all with beautiful melodies intertwined to tell the story in great detail. You will leave looking for the album on Spotify. Hamilton is all about unity. People of color make up much of its cast, and each actor showcases his or her own personal talents. No actor is left in the back of the stage.; everyone gets a chance to shine.. You definitely do not want to miss it. There is no closing date for this show and there probably won’t be for a while! All these shows have tickets that start around $60, but most shows offer “student rush” tickets, which are sold at a discounted price at the box office. Some shows also hold lotteries in which you have a chance to win front row tickets for a very low price, so going to see one of these shows is a definite possibility for broke college students! NEW YORK
IS OUR CAMPUS BY KATE MACKIE
I like to consider Fordham University students “native tourists.” “Native” because the streets of New York are our very own stomping grounds: they are where we live and where we belong. “Tourists” because, no matter how long we spend in the bustling concrete jungle, there will still be more museums, restaurants, people and neighborhoods waiting to be explored. With the world’s most spectacular city at our fingertips, it is expected of us to have the desire to see all that New York has to offer. Below are eight entertaining, tasty and Instagram famous attractions that will make a day trip in the city worth your while. 1. Urban Space – Are you a “foodie?” Do you follow numerous Instagram blogs filled with mouthwatering food? Do you enjoy tasty and affordable dishes? If yes, then Urban Space will fill all of your taste buds’ wants and desires. Urban Space is constantly being featured on famous Instagram accounts with its plentiful food options, stretching from delicious homemade doughnuts to its devilishly good vegetarian options. Urban Space’s prices for various dishes, including tacos, gyros, lobster and so much more, range from $9-$25. Check out Urban Space on Instagram @Urbanspacenyc for more information on their various locations and food. 2. Whitney Museum – The Whitney is one of my personal favorite museums in New York City. Aside from the beautiful and constantly changing art work on display, the building itself is a work of art. The Whitney is an all-glass building located in Chelsea, with a spectacular view overlooking the Hudson River. This museum gives you an excuse to explore one of a kind works of art, as well as the surrounding Chelsea district. Check out the Whitney on Instagram @Whitneymuseum for a sneak peek into its unique art collection. 3. Alice’s Tea Cup – Looking for a whimsical New York City experience? Then, you must check out Alice’s Tea Cup. The restaurant is perfectly curated from its literary-themed
decor to its delicate homemade treats and sandwiches. The menu consists of dishes including their famous Alice’s Curious French Toast, Scones Benedict and Mixed Berry Crepes. This is a great place to go with some girl friends, on a date or with your family. Check out Alice’s Tea Cup on Instagram @Alicesteacupnyc. 4. Black Tap NYC – Gourmet burgers, sensational shakes, modern sides and much more. The Black Tap NYC is New York’s most popular burger place. Its Nutella, peanut butter and cookies and cream shakes are not only fun to look at, but are also delicious. It has a very cool atmosphere and, let’s be real, who doesn’t love a huge juicy burger washed down with a thick, satisfying milkshake? The Black Tap is where every city-goer needs to end up at least once. It is affordable, extremely well-known, and a great place to go with friends and family. Check out the The Black Tap’s Instagram @blacktapnyc to see what the buzz is all about. 5. Emily Pizza – Pizza, Pizza, Pizza …oh, and pizza. Everyone loves biting into a hot, mouthwatering, sauce-filled slice of pizza finished off with a soft and crunchy crust. This pizzeria is located in Brooklyn, and has been rated the number one pizza in the city by New York Magazine. So, grab some friends and treat yourself to some wood-fired perfection. Check out Emily Pizza on Instagram @pizzalovesemily. 6. Sea Glass Carousel – Take a trip to Battery Park to see the spectacular 16 million dollar Sea Glass Carousel. The carousel is essentially an underwater parade filled with giant fish that shimmer with electric bioluminescence. Seeing the Sea Glass Carousel is an enthralling and highly recommended experience. Type in ‘Sea Glass Carousel’ on Instagram, and check out the tagged photos to see why this is a must see! 7. The Bagel Store – Take a trip to Brooklyn for your very own five star-rated bagel. The Bagel Store is known for its handmade rainbow bagels. You will not only satisfy your hunger, but also be able to snap a great pic for your Instagram feed to enjoy. Check out their unique bagels on their Instagram account @thebagelstore. 8. The Frick Collection – The Frick collection is an art museum located in the Henry Clay Frick House on the Upper East Side. It contains masterpieces of European paintings, major sculptures and is decorated to the nines in eighteenth century furniture and porcelain. Visiting the Frick is a great way to spend the day in the city. You’ll be able to soak in a great deal of historical beauty and knowledge. The New York
Botanical Garden An Oasis in the Bronx By Katherine Falzon
N
ew York is full of adventure and excitement. Whether it be exploring museums in Manhattan or enjoying fine Italian dining on Arthur Avenue, we are surrounded by diverse culture, art and music. However, sometimes it can be overwhelming to live amongst all the commotion. While our campus is beautiful and secluded from the hectic city streets, I occasionally miss the pure tranquility of nature. Growing up in a quiet, suburban environment surrounded by country and wooded acres, I long for more places that allow for such an escape. Luckily, there is such a place that happens to be right next door to campus. Offering a peaceful getaway and safe haven from the busy lives we lead, you’ll forget you’re even in the Bronx. The New York Botanical Garden provides this perfect oasis. As the warmer weather approaches, now is the time to explore all that the Garden has to offer when the color and beauty is at its peak. There are many events you can attend with family and friends, specifically on Mother’s Day Weekend and their famous Rose Garden Weekend. Both include fun activities, scenic tours and live acoustic performances. This is the perfect opportunity to relax amidst springtime beauty. Although there are several events to attend, sometimes it’s nice to spontaneously go without any set, plans. Whether it be by yourself or with your

friends, go for a walk or a run and stumble across the many types of gardens. For passionate photographers, the breathtaking sites are photoshoot worthy. If you’re a distance runner, the Garden gives you the perfect chance to increase your mileage or train for a race. Ever so often, the Fordham Running Club takes trips to the Garden, especially as the weather gets nicer. If you’re looking to meet new people or become more active, this is the perfect way. As you run along the forest trails, there is always something beautiful to look at so you will never grow tired of the charming scenery. I vividly remember when I first discovered one of the four hidden cascading waterfalls of the Bronx River while running along the forest trail. The site was so captivating and mesmerizing that I paused just to take it all in, turning off the music that had been playing loudly into my headphones. The peace and quietness of the forest enveloped me. Serene sounds of rushing water and birds chirping in the distance washed away the stress of the city. I felt as though I had been transported to a different world; I was completely at ease. Taking time out of the day to go for a run in the forest trails is a great way to de-stress and clear your mind. Runs in the Garden offer something unique: a profound, deepening solitude that is only obtainable in the quietness of nature. The Garden is open year-round, Tuesday to Sunday, with the exception of some holidays that fall on a Monday. Hours are typically from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., but to accommodate grounds-only admission and early morning exercisers, the Garden opens at 9 a.m. on Saturdays. As a Fordham student, grounds-only admission is free as long as you show your ID upon arrival. Students also receive discounts on tickets to exhibitions and special events, so be sure to take advantage of the great opportunities being offered! The year marks the 125th Anniversary of the New York Botanical Garden’s founding. Celebrate the Garden’s green, eco-friendly mission and see for yourself the hidden gem of the Bronx!
