EDITOR’S LETTER
Be Fearless “It’s very important to take risks, I think that research is very important, but in the end you have to work from your instincts and feelings and take those risks and be fearless.” –Anna Wintour Editor in Chief, Vogue
I started my freshman year at Fordham with one objective: to be fearless. I became a Senator on the United Student Government, a member of the rowing team, and the lifestyle editor of MODE. Why? Because for me, college is a time to discover what you enjoy and are good at. My advice: Use your four years to find something that you are passionate about. If you try something new and the spark isn’t there you can always revert to your home at Fordham and try something else. When looking for the next Fordham student to be featured on the cover of MODE, I knew I wanted to find someone who embodied the fearless college student I strive to be. As you’ll read in her interview, Acacia Courtney is the perfect example of someone who didn’t wait a second to make her mark on the world in college. For me the most impressive thing about her is her ambition. Despite her young age she pursues all of her passions as far she can. From the moment I began my interview with her I got the sense of her genuine beauty, talent, creativity, and strength. If anything can be learned from the example set by Acacia-or anyone who contributed to MODE- it’s be fearless. College is the time to voice your opinion, try new things, and find your passion. Sound a little daunting? Have no fear: this issue of MODE is full of new experiences to be had. My goal for this issue was to showcase the talent and interests of some of Fordham’s most fearless students. Each writer and contributor joined MODE to pursue their interests and I hope their hard work will inspire you to do the same.

The bright yellow color radiates positive vibes. With the help of inspirational instructors and upbeat music, riders have the ability to clear their heads and let out some steam. CLEAN EATING
1 0 1
FOR THE COLLEGE STUDENT By Chelsea Aiss
Since I was a little girl, eating and living healthy has always been a prominent part of my life. Growing up, my parents always made sure that my food was organic and that I received the right amount of each food group including vegetables, fruits, grains, and a glass of milk with dinner. Unfortunately, eating healthy isn’t as easy as a college student on a small budget with the stresses of work, athletics, events and class always on our minds. This past summer I had the fortunate opportunity to work closely with Health Coach and Nutritionist Maria Marlowe. Maria is best known for her appearances on Dr. Oz, her personalized blog, and for being a Fordham Alumni. Her recipes are entirely vegan, gluten, and dairy free and are meant to be healthy and tasty dishes. Working closely with Maria, I developed an interest in changing my dietary and nutritional habits. When you think of the typical college student’s diet, it usually consists of pasta, packaged or canned foods, pizza, or take-out most nights of the week. Here are some tips that I learned from Maria and from my personal experiences that have helped me live a healthy, happy, life on a budget. 1. Quinoa: a high protein, low carb alternative to either eat alone or as a replacement for rice. You can buy frozen packages of quinoa at Trader Joe’s, so that all you have to do is put it in the microwave and it’s done in three minutes. Quinoa is also great with vegetable or chicken stir-fry. 2. To keep vegetables and fruit from spoiling, make sure to keep them separated. I like to buy my produce from the fruit stands on the street because they are cheaper. If you buy from these stands, make sure to soak them in white vinegar first to kill any bacteria that might be lingering on the produce. 3. Smoothie Time. Making smoothies and protein shakes are great and filling alternatives for breakfast and snacks throughout the day. For decorative purposes, I put mine in Mason Jars. I am way more inclined to make them when they’re not only delicious but also visually appealing!

how to make
winter workouts easier
“
Working out this time of the year is always particularly difficult. From tins of tempting Christmas cookies to bone-chilling gusts of wind, it seems like there’s plenty of reasons to skip the gym and snuggle under your favorite blanket instead. But trust me: taking time off in the winter is not a good idea. Here are some tips to help you from New Year’s resolution to Spring Break body.

Schedule: If you’re a Type-A organizer like I am, I don’t
need to tell you the amazing things that planners and calendars can do for you. But if you appreciate a life sans structure, I urge you to reconsider, at least when it comes to exercising. Actually writing down your goals and workout plans for the week is extremely helpful in realizing your fitness goals. Try making weekly or monthly schedules that detail when you plan on exercising and what you plan on doing in order get the most out of your time and to avoid making excuses. Check off completed workouts as you go and reward yourself when your calendar is through!
Stock Up: My favorite part about working out (besides the endorphins and an excuse to eat french fries after) is buying cute gear! Classic athletic brands like Nike and Lulu Lemon are go-to’s but some of our favorite fashion brands, like Free People, also feature tons of great workout staples like bras, tanks, and leggings. The bookstore is also stocked with adorable Ram-themed Under Armour gear! For runners who have to brave the winter wind and cold, insulated print leggings, a colorful vest, long-sleeved hoodies for layering, and a new pair of sneakers are necessities. A great outfit can change your attitude about anything— even that dreaded long run.
Sync: A few months ago I received a Nike FuelBand as a birthday present and it has completely changed the way I look at being active. I wear the discrete bracelet all day

everyday—whether I’m walking to class or on the elliptical— and it automatically tracks my movement, converts it into NikeFuel and calories, and sends the info to the FuelBand app on my phone via bluetooth. With the app I can set daily goals, complete challenges, and track my progress over weeks and months. If you’re not willing to splurge on the band, there are plenty of other apps you can use to find workout ideas and track your progress. Two of my favorites are Nike Running and Nike Training Camp.
Socialize: One of the easiest ways to stick to your workout plan is to enlist the help of a friend. Whether your goal is to get to the gym three times a week or train for a race, having a workout partner by your side will keep you honest, motivated, and on track. Make a pact with your roommate to take more gym classes or buddy up with a friend from home to train for that half marathon. It’ll be great for your friendship and your health.
Splurge: When the thrill of new Lulu Lemon gear has
worn off, your friends have quit your exercise pact, and you’re beyond bored of your routine it might seem like you’re out of options. Luckily, with a quick ride on the Metro North to Bronxville or Mount Vernon you can be sweating at Soul Cycle, CrossFit Gotham, or Pure Barre within 15 minutes. While these options are definitely pricey, the cost is worth it if your current routine has left you unsatisfied and unmotivated.

Lauren Andersen @lauren_andersen Makeup artist and BFF to the stars, Andersen’s insta stream offers an inside view of all of the lovely ladies of Hollywood that she calls both clients and friends. There’s no lack of inspiration for new beauty looks, plus it’s fun to tag along on Andersen’s escapades around LA with everyone from the Richie sisters to constant companion Jessica Alba. Sofia Richie @sofiarichie Speaking of the Richie sisters, Nicole’s younger sis Sofia has enjoyed a quick rise to the top of Hollywood’s (and Instagram’s) young, rich and stylish. The teen’s feed is chock full of high-class fashion and regular lunch dates at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The 16-year old is one of few teens with a wardrobe so easily envied (just check out her stacks of niche-designer jewels and Balenciaga bags). As the daughter of Lionel Richie and sister of fashion icon Nicole, what more can we expect? Olivia Palermo @therealoliviap Undoubtedly the reigning queen of street style, Olivia Palermo has a toe in every part of the fashion world. From modeling (sometimes with new husband, and fellow fashionite Johannes Huebl), designing (a recent shoe collab with Aquazzura), guest editing look books (for online site Piperlime), and sitting front row at the hottest shows, Palermo is one to trust for style guidance. You can also follow Palermo’s handsome hubby @johanneshuebl for an adorable look into the couple’s jet-setting love life.

The Guru Guide By Amanda Maile Photos: Kellyn Simpkins
Youtube is the home of millions upon millions of videos. Whether it be videos of cats playing the piano, frat guys lip-syncing to Taylor Swift, or Katy Perry’s newest song, you can find almost anything to entertain yourself on this video sharing website. However, a cleverer corner exists to Youtube, one in which people offer makeup, fashion, and life advice. These people, called beauty and lifestyle gurus, create videos with the sole intention of helping others. If you’re like me, then you find these people to be extremely helpful, because with just a click you can find your own personal makeup artists, fashion stylists, and life coaches at your service. Keywords such as “Fashion Haul,” “Makeup Tutorial,” or even, “Healthy Living,” provide one with countless videos of young women offering their knowledge on these topics. However, at the core, beauty and lifestyle gurus want to teach more than the perfect cat-eye or ringlet curl, they want to help others and spread positivity. If you’re new to this part of Youtube, there are a few big names you may want to acquaint yourself with. One you may have heard of is Bethany Mota, known as macbarbie07 on Youtube. Over the past five years, Mota has gained much popularity, landing herself a clothing line at Aeropostale and a role on this season of “Dancing with the Stars.” All of this success stems from her Youtube channel. Mota creates videos geared toward certain occasions. Videos titled

“Date Outfit Ideas,” “New Year’s Eve Makeup,” “Perfect Back to School Makeup,” and many more will help you find the perfect look for any event. Mota’s videos are not only informative, but also fun and light-hearted leaving viewers hooked. A guru perfect for any college girl is Ingrid Nilsen, known as MissGlamorazzi on Youtube. Nilsen’s style reflects that of most college students, showing outfits made up of pieces from JCrew, Forever 21, and Urban Outfitters. Other than her trendy style, Nilsen also shows off her affinity for cooking and healthy living on her channel. Ingrid posts videos teaching viewers how to lead a healthy life through various recipes and workout regimens. While cooking and working out seem almost impossible to fit into a college schedule, Nilsen never suggests anything she, herself, would not be able to incorporate into her busy life. Her positivity and dedication always keep her viewers coming back for more. While I always enjoy watching both Bethany’s and Ingrid’s videos, my favorite guru is Zoe Sugg, known as Zoella on Youtube. If you are looking for videos concerning hairstyling, Zoe is your girl. From the perfect topknot to perfect curls, Sugg always knows how to keep every hair in place. Aside from hairstyling videos, Sugg also showcases her unique fashion sense. While her style is much edgier than most, Sugg always keeps her look fun, flirty, and easy to emulate However, what I admire far more than Zoe’s beauty advice is her personality. Sugg is known for being high-spirited, bright, and funny. More often than not, her videos feature other Youtubers and give off a comedic tone. Through her videos, Zoe shows she is a normal girl and that her goal is to help and inspire. While this is in no way a comprehensive list of Youtube beauty and lifestyle gurus, it is a great place to start for those who are new to the community. So go ahead, log onto Youtube and find your own personal guru. If you can’t find one,

Behind The Screens: Why Social Media Makes Dating Difficult By Alyssa Fiorentino
“Why didn’t you write me?” “I wrote you 365 letters. I wrote you every day for a year!”
Right about now, you’re most likely
picturing Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling getting soaked in the pouring rain during that scene of The Notebook. Allie and Noah’s relationship ended when they lost touch, but what if The Notebook was set in 2014? What if it were you asking your former flame why things got lost in translation? If you have to ask why the communication ended, where do you even begin? “Why didn’t you text me? Why didn’t you respond to my Snapchat? Why haven’t you liked any of my Instagram pictures?”
These are just a few examples of what you could be wondering when things start to unravel. With a plethora of apps and social media sites to choose from, keeping in touch with your crush, hook up, or boyfriend can be made simple. Then again, the ability to constantly
14
connect with others on multiple platforms has created new potholes in the long and winding road that is dating, making relationships and “romance” harder than ever. For example, let’s say you’ve added each other on every popular social media platform: Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. You’re now linked up so that you can see who is friends with whom, who is following whom, who likes what, and so on. This can be helpful, revealing what you have in common. On the other hand, it also allows you to see that his ex-girlfriend is in his top Snapchat friends, and that he likes pictures of half naked girls on Instagram twice a day. Whether you go looking for the bad stuff, or it finds you, sometimes it’s impossible to ignore. “I can see that you’ve opened the Snapchat I sent you, but you aren’t responding. Are you sleeping? Are you busy? No wait, it just came up on my Instagram following feed that you liked ESPN’s picture of Tom Brady. So you’re ignoring me then? Am I crazy?”
MODE MAGAZINE WINTER 2014
The answer? Kind of… but who could blame you? We live in a world where partners read through each other’s text messages and guess each other’s passwords. Technology casts a dark shadow over trust, making it easier to jump to conclusions, and harder to relax and just have fun. Thanks to text messages and apps that allow you to view when your messages have been read, you play the guessing game, the waiting game, and any other game you can think of. Whether we like it or not, social media connections become key trading cards in the dating game. Sure, he talks to you when you see him at the bar, but it’s nothing if he hasn’t followed you on Instagram yet, right? And Allie and Noah thought they had problems… So how can we unravel ourselves from the digital web if we’re all so wrapped up? Confidence and patience. Stop worrying about why he hasn’t requested to connect yet. Remind yourself why he will want to form those digital connections eventually, and let things happen naturally over time.
Best Dates To Go On This Winter By Christina D’Ambrosio Photo Courtesy of Avery Semjen
With the coming and going of the holiday season, it is easy for you and your S.O. to fall into the habit of staying in and hiding away from the winter cold. To keep the good times rolling during these upcoming frigid months, check out these cute winter dates that will warm your heart this winter!
1. Strap on your skates and beat the tourists
by heading to the Bank of America Winter Village at Bryant Park. Situated between 40th and 42nd Streets & Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Midtown Manhattan, it is the perfect place to spend a cold winter night under the stars with the cutie you’ve been crushing on.
3. College responsibilities can be overwhelm-
ing, so grab a date and a sled and make a weekend escape to Pilgrim Hill in Central Park. With reviews boasting that Pilgrim Hill is the best sledding spot in Manhattan, expect that the memories you make will make the long lines worth it!
2. If coordination isn’t your strong suit, check 4. When it gets to be unbearably cold outside,
out the High Line. Located on Manhattan’s West Side, this mile-long elevated public park features breathtaking views of the city and plenty of seating. With strategically placed two-person lounge chairs overlooking gorgeous views, the High Line is a great spot to snuggle up for a beautiful winter sunset.
warm up with a hot chocolate (and your hot date!) at Cocoa Bar NYC. Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Cocoa Bar is a specialized cafe where you can cozy up with a chocolate-based coffee or latte, or classic hot chocolate with your choice of toppings. Go on a snowy winter day to warm up with your 15 cutie!
Isn’t it strange to think that what you are wearing today is the result of thousands of years of fashion? Of all the centuries of innovation and design, the shirt on your back is the latest creation, and it too is on the platform for change. During the reign of Louis XVI, tight corsets and voluminous skirts filled the rooms of Versailles. During the Harlem Renaissance, drop waists and dark lipstick crowded the streets of New York. In the past, what one wore was a reflection of their social class and was mainly determined by their purchasing power. Today, skinny jeans and oversized bags populate college campuses across the country. It seems that every time there is an evolution in fashion, the styles are created with more functionality in mind rather than the exclusivity they evoke. Today, we benefit from the ability to dictate our own personal sense of style as a result of the establishment of the various stores that offer low priced fashionable clothing for every style. Neither your economic status nor your income level alone can dictate your chance to express yourself through fashion. If you come across the new styles splashing across fashion week or if you simply look outside your window, you can see the product of one’s fashionable imagination. The combination of material, color, and cut are all new, but the history of fashion resonates in them. Every shift in the fashion industry is an echo from the first fashion trend ever established.
FASHION Moves
We can learn about the fashions that were in style throughout history in our textbooks, however the future of fashion and style are yet to be determined. It is up to us to dictate the future of fashion. It is our creative minds and our knack for innovation that will lead the fashion industry and pave the way for the next generation. Of all the years of fashion, the next couple of decades will be a reflection of our styles, so think hard and innovate. Sooner or later, our preferences will be in the textbooks.

The Top 10 Guys You’ll Date at Fordham
1
By Rachel Morales
6
During their undergrad years, girls will find themselves in all types of relationships, both good and bad. Here’s a list of the top 10 guys you might find yourself dating (and regretting) during your years at Fordham: The International - Whether they’re from Italy or
Spain or Germany, they’re all beautiful, exotic creatures. However, you eventually get to a point where the cultural and language barriers get to be too much. Sorry, I can’t be in a relationship when I need to have GoogleTranslate handy at all times.
2
The Pot Head - Despite their inability to focus for long amounts of time, it’s almost certain that you will never argue, solely because he will just be too relaxed to do so. Can’t really complain about this type of guy, except for the fact that they’re almost always stinky and always in risk of being caught by Fordham Security.
3
The All-Boys Catholic High Schooler
Personally, my least favorite type of guy. Admittedly, this includes a LARGE portion of Fordham students. After not being exposed to many girls for their four years of high school, they feel the need to overcompensate and try SO hard. “Yeah, I was lacrosse captain for four years in high school—wanna come back to my place?” Lord, no.
4
The Artsy Guy - I promise you that all of your dates will take place in the basements of obscure coffee shops in Williamsburg as he critiques Jack Kerouac’s “On The Road.” If you’re not talking about underground bands and “going green” efforts, he probably won’t care much.
5
The Party Boy/Wanna-be Frat Star- Basically,
their parents wouldn’t let them go to a state school, so they live out their dreams by drinking Natty Lights in their dorms and ignoring all your texts. Fun to party with, not the best to date.
The Romantic Guy - This guy is a great find. Spontaneous dates, cute good-morning texts, and he’ll never forget your anniversary/birthday. #blessed
7
The Overbearing Guy - The biggest problem
is that they first come across as the romantic guy, making you think you’ve hit the jackpot. Then, you start getting creepy texts and regret ever giving him your number.
8
The Sporty Guy - The
BEST guy. Not only does he know how work with others and stay committed to something, but he also has an incredible bod. Yes, please. (Note: intramural dodgeball does not count.)
9
The Flamboyant Best Friend - Everyone
thinks this will NEVER happen to them until a few months later you see he rebounded with that guy that was in your Theology class last semester. Don’t take it as a surprise, though, when all you had in common with the guy was your love for Barbara Streisand and pumpkin spice lattes.
10
The Future Husband
Last year, Fordham was ranked among the top 10 universities to find your future husband. Half of my Fordham career is over and all I have to say is: Where the hell are these guys???

Fashion of the Theatre: The Stage is Your Runway By Emily McFadden
The Tony Award for Best Costume Design has recognized the importance of the fashion on the hen you go to a show, whether it’s stages of Broadway since 1947. Some recent winning on Broadway or at a local high school, there are a shows include Twelfth Night (2014), Rodgers and few things you’re bound to notice. Maybe the lead’s Hammerstein’s Cinderella (2013), Shrek the Musical voice blew you out of the water, or the sets were (2009), Wicked (2004), and Hairspray (2003). This absolutely beautiful. Is Fashion Art ? W
hether or not fashion is considered art is a rather controversial topic. But first, what is art? The definition of art seems to be an evolving term so it is difficult to label it universally. Consider that it may be a vehicle towards self expression through some medium. Some reasons why people may consider fashion art is because it is capable of mimicking the identical purpose of art: self-expression. On a rather dark note, designer Alexander McQueen had designed a collection called Angels and Demons shortly before he ended his own life. The evidence of this rather dark theme throughout the designs of the collection provides an internal view of this artist’s mind. This collection was an outlet for McQueen to expose the thoughts within him; as this was clearly a moment of self-expression, his collection hence is art.
“Abandon the
perception that fashion is simply superficial.” Pieces of fashion are displayed in the same manner as traditional forms of art, such as paintings or sculptures. For instance, every year, the Costume Institute runs a fashion-themed exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; in 2012, it was Prada and Schiaparelli: Impossible Conversations. This exhibition considered what is known as “Waist up, Waist down”.
By Diana Riazi
The 1920s designs had most intricacies waist up, whereas the current Prada designs had most detail the waist down. This can be seen as a metaphor of what women’s role was in society. In the 1920s, women were thought of as always sitting, living a domestic life; however, now women can be thought of as standing, living an active and more equitable life as compared to before. Some more exhibitions that are pleasing examples of fashion as art are the FIT Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and the annual Costume Institute Exhibit at the Met (from May through August), where other events are held as well. Even consider New York City display windows as artistic exhibits. Some critics argue that fashion is not art because it is constrained by purposes of business and profit-making. However, who is to say that a painting, a “traditional” piece of art, was not created for the purposes of business and profit? For a painting or sculpture on display could have been created simply for the intention of spinning a profit, yet pieces such as this are labeled “art” because they appear to be within a supposed convention of what art is. I invite you to abandon the perception that fashion is simply superficial and open up to the concept that the intersection between fashion and art is much more prominent than often realized.

Unfortunately, after watching this talented group on stage, Rupert Grint and Micah Scott were the only actors to come out stage door and say hello, while the rest of the cast snuck out a secret door. Come on! Where is the love for the energetic audience and supportive fans? Nevertheless, this play is worth a Friday night out in the city! Catch It’s Only a Play at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, between Broadway and 8th, until until March January 29! 3rd!
It’s Monday morning after a long weekend and what would you rather wear than a baggy pair of Fordham sweat pants and that old tee shirt that has rips and coffee stains on it? Although this is tempting, you will regret it as soon as you sit down next to that head to toe, flawlessly dressed girl in Art History. Instead, let’s get through this dreaded day with a cute and comfy outfit that will make you feel relaxed, yet put together!

“Not there” Bralettes Instead of dealing with too tight straps and suffocating underwire, why not wear a bra that feels like it’s barely there? These cute bralettes are not only meant for comfort, but also make any outfit more put-together. With these babies, you won’t have to worry about the ugly straps, sides, or the clip in the back of your boring nude bra. In place of it, you can pick a cute color or pattern to accent your outfit. For those with bigger busts who might need the underwire, there are still bras with softer cups. Or forget the underwire and try something less structured. My absolute favorite bralette is from Aerie! Its soft lacey material prevents it from looking like a training bra and it’s very affordable. Jeggings and Boyfriend Jeans
Tight skinny jeans are the last thing on the list during those miserable winter days when nothing seems comfortable except your snowman covered flannel pj pants. To still fulfill the need to wear denim, the perfect fit jegging will work perfectly! Nothing is better than the look of denim with the feel of cotton! You can also go with something looser and pick up a pair of boyfriend jeans. These will allow your legs to breathe and give you a stylish look without being stuffed into uncomfortable skinny jeans! My favorite pair is The Drew - 16 Years Ascension AG jeans. Even though they are pricey, sometimes it is better to go designer for softer material!
Big Sweaters
When dreading that morning class, think of how comfortable you’ll be wrapped up in a soft sweater. Wear it on that cold day when the thought of leaving your bed is unfathomable. The oversized sweater with leggings combo can be dressed up with a thin belt to accentuate the waist or dressed down on snowy days to cuddle up and watch “When Harry Met Sally” while drinking hot cocoa. Check your mom’s closet for any of hers from the 80s (because they’re so in) or they can be bought at thrift stores/flea markets (for a unique broken in one).
High Socks
Tights can function as a winter skirt saver, but they can also be uncomfortable to wear. Reach your skirts’ higher hemlines with a cozy pair of socks instead. Go from relaxing around in the dorm to out and about in NYC with a quick switch from boxer shorts to a pleated skirt and cat slippers to your favorite winter booties. Opt for a soft material and a neutral color for these thigh highs. Urban Outfitters is a great place to pick up quilted high socks. Plus, they have a great deal: 2 pairs for $22!
21
Don’t know what to wear with that delicate dress? Dress it up! Pair a simple, classic slip dress with ankle booties. Now take your plaid shirt (any color of your choosing) and simply wear it unbuttoned.

A flash to the past! This trend was a hit in the 90’s and now it’s making its way back revamped. This outfit is perfect for those of you who want a comfy but cozy look. With a white T-shirt and leggings, and any shoes of your choosing, such as converse or boots, wrap the plaid shirt around your waist like a belt.
Feeling preppy today? Layer up! Wear your plaid shirt under a fitted sweater, letting the plaid collar show and the bottom peak out. Pair it with your favorite corduroys and some boots and you’re good to go!
I think we can all say that we have at least one plaid shirt in our wardrobe. However most people are not aware of the millions of ways you can sport this classic look with multiple different outfits. The saying “oldie but a goodie” perfectly describes this timeless trend! Whether you’re opting for a comfy and cozy look or trying to spice up an outfit, the possibilities are endless—simply put, plaid can be worn with almost everything and anything. New Year, New Boots
By the time winter break is over and you’re back on campus, it is inevitable that you’re going to need some sturdy boots to take on the snow. The frigid weather of January and February is always the worst part of the year, but (try to) get excited for it by treating your closet with some of our favorite boots of the season. From leather boots to rain boots, be prepared and stylin’ in the new year! It goes without saying that leather boots are a staple in every Fordham girl’s winter wardrobe. Riding boots can take any outfit to a new level, and can be paired with almost anything. Try a pair of over-theknee leather boots with your best winter coat, a skirt, tights, and a cute scarf for a night out in the city. For a different look, pick up a pair of shorter leather booties, such as Doc Martens, and pair them with your best patterned tights and a dress for a fun, flirty OOTD. No matter how much we love wearing our leather boots, for heavy snow days you’re going to need something a little more heavy-duty. For days like these, try a pair of Hunter rain boots to protect your feet from the cold. The boots come in various colors and prints, so pick a color that shows off your personality and own it! Boot-shopping is a perfect excuse to make a trip downtown. You could even make a whole day out of it! With the Dr. Marten’s and Frye stores located in SoHo, you’ll find the perfect boots to withstand the New York winter. Hunter retailers are also located in Manhattan; swing by one of their stores to find the pair of your dreams!

What’s in My Bag: Confessions of a Stasher By: Linda Mulé
This summer, I hopped off the plane (not at LAX, but close) at Long Beach Airport in California with a stiff feeling starting in my neck that traveled down my shoulders and in between by back blades. I ignored it; you try sitting commercial in an upright chair for six hours- ALONE. It was the seat, it was the turbulence, it was the lack of grenadine for my Shirley Temple. I would get over it. Fast-forward three weeks. I am back in New York, but my actual back is not. I still have this ache and a constant feeling that my back is begging to be cracked. So, I did what every responsible and independent college student would do: I called my mom at work and complained. That night I came home to my mom calling me up to my room. What I saw before me hit me like a ton of bricks. Lying there were the contents of my handbag, gym bag, beach bag, and work bag- literally, a ton of bricks. My mother had magically become a chiropractor in a few short hours. However, I could not simply LET GO of the contents of my bag. They are so necessary! I did solve my problem of chronic back pain though. The solution: buy more bags and separate your contents by handbag. You get a new bag, you feel great, and you’re organized. Everyone wins!
MY EVERYDAY BAG:
This was the most shocking, yet personable. Take note. 1. A Bottle of Hot Sauce: If you don’t like someone’s cooking, then just splash some Red Hot on when they aren’t looking. No feelings hurt. However, spring for the mini bottle. The larger bottle gets too heavy (I know from experience). 2. A Pocket Sized Constitution: I got this from my teacher in 9th grade. You should have this because, ‘Merica. 3. Chapstick(s): I carry around three ‘lip care’ items. • EOS: those things are so darn cute and egg shaped. They smell and taste amazing. They’re just so fun to put on, OKAY?! I’m partial to the mint. So yum. • Nivea Shimmer: I love this stick because it’s perfect to swipe on when you’re in a rush but want that ‘I Woke Up Like This But Kinda Wanna Make Some Effort’ look.
24
This But Kinda Wanna Make Some Effort’ look. • MAC Angel: If you really want to make it look like you’re the polished queen of lipstick, this color is versatile and will go with any look/ season.
MY GYM BAG:
You’d probably skip arm day for a solid five weeks if you carried this. 1. Dry Shampoo: It’s all fun and games until you forget you have to meet your study group after spin class. Spray this bad boy at the roots, pull into a pony and you’re magically a Lulu Lemon model. The Dove Dry Shampoo works really well and you can find it at any drugstore. 2. Different Deodorants: Monday I want to smell like a pineapple, Tuesday I am a daisy, and Wednesday I am purely Teen Spirit. 3. HAIR TIES. JUST. BRING. ALL. OF. THEM.

MY WEEKEND BAG:
City excursions require basic prep. 1. Tissues: Nothing says awkward like holding your hands over your nose until the Lafayette stop because you have nothing to wipe your nose with. 2. Hand Sanitizer: I love public transit, but some things are better left untouched. Also, they come in those fun smells and cute keychain holders. I am also five. These lifesavers (literally) are from Bath & Body Works. I stock up on the holiday flavors so I have them year round. If you are just jumping on this bandwagon, I recommend the coconut. 3. Disposable Camera: Let’s be real: your phone is going to die. Also, it’s trey-chic and by that I mean it’s super artsy.

Your bags are packed. Your flight is booked. It seems like the only thing standing between you and your family holiday is a four and a half hour layover in Chicago. But before you can truly depart on your journey home this Christmas, you’ve got one last problem to solve: what to wear to the airport. On one hand, you’ve got to find something comfortable, especially if you’ve got a long flight ahead of you. You’ve also got to take into consideration airport security. This means limited jewelry and easily removable shoes. Your choices are so narrow when it comes to eligible travel day outfits that you might be tempted to admit defeat and roll up to the departure gate in a tracksuit. Instead of subjecting yourself to the shame of looking like a Juicy Couture model circa 2007 in your head-totoe velour, consider some of these insightful tips before you plan your next airport ensemble. If you’re skipping out on the frigid New York winter for a warmer destination, you’re going to have to dress for two different temperatures. Ballet flats are great in this situation because they’ll keep your toes covered, but can still be airy enough for hotter weather. A cardigan and scarf thrown over a sleeveless shirt gives you the ability to shed layers when you land. Straight-fit pants are also a great option because you can wear

them long during your travels and cuff them into cute capris once you have arrived in warmer weather. When it comes to shoes, avoid laces at all costs. You do not want to be the girl who holds up the line at security because she has to untie her Converse before dumping her shoes onto the conveyor belt. You should also avoid flip flips or you’ll have to walk around barefoot while you wait for the TSA to finish checking your carryon. Boots with zippers, Sperries, and ballet flats are great because they are easy to slip on and off. Helpful Hint: if you tend to over pack, wearing your boots to the airport is crucial. They’re bound to be the bulkiest items in your suitcase, so keeping them on your feet will free up a ton of luggage space. Don’t skimp on accessories when you’re packing. Scarves and statement necklaces can change up your look if you have to repeat shirts in the interest of luggage space. Another great way free up room in your suitcase is to roll your clothes when you pack them. This has the added bonus of keeping your clothes wrinkle-free for the duration of your journey. So whether you’re headed back home this Christmas break or jetting off to a winter getaway, keep these tips in mind before you seal your suitcase and hop onboard your flight. 25

CONCERTS
for Change
As a student in New York City, I love to attend concerts with my friends. Sweaty bodies packed in a concert hall, our favorite band blaring out of the speakers, it makes for the perfect night. Music sounds different when the artist is performing right in front of you, you can feel the energy radiating from the musicians. Since 1971 when George Harrison performed in Madison Square Garden to benefit Bangladesh; concerts have been a way for artists to give back. Harrison described his involvement with the event, in his song Bangla Desh, written for the occasion. “My friend came to me with sadness in his eyes, told me that he wanted help before his country dies.” Artists play their hearts out not only for the screaming fans but for the charities they support. This September my roommate and I attended the third annual Global Citizen Festival in Central Park. The concert was part of a global initiative, which aimed to end world poverty by 2030. To attend the show, you had to get involved. Concert goers earned their ticket; by signing petitions, sharing causes on social media, or reaching out to politicians; which e ncouraged attendees to take action. All of the attendees at the concert were active participants in facilitating change. The set list was incredible with performances by Tiesto, FUN,
The Roots, Carrie Underwood, No Doubt, Alicia Keys, Sting, Jay-Z and Beyoncé. More importantly, in between performances, politicians like the
“My friend came to me with sadness in eyes, Told me that he wanted help before his country dies” -George Harrison prime minister of India, Narendra Modi and other celebrities spoke about causes that were important to them.
Such causes included education for women, vaccines for children or providing bathroom facilities in impoverished countries. The festival was a huge success. It resulted in the pledge of $2.9 billion from countries all over the world, which will save 500,000 lives by 2015. Similarly, Luke Bryan is ending his “That’s My Kind Of Night” tour by performing in farms across the south. Part of the concert proceeds go to his Luke Byran Farm Tour Scholarship, which gives scholarships to students in farming communities. This is just one example of the many artists who are donating their talents to charity, and it is up to us as fans to support them. Music brings people together in a way like nothing else can. Standing in the middle of a crowd amongst many, I feel small. Standing in a crowd of people, who all participated in something, who all believed in change, I feel powerful. I am a part of something that could really make a difference. Music bridges the gap between gender, sexuality, and social class; it is a platform for everyone to meet on solid ground. Something that has the opportunity to both break down social barriers and expedite change is a powerful thing. It’s important we express our support for causes we believe in, and if we can dance while doing so, even better.

EVERYDAY we see our favorite celebrities in magazines wearing expensive outfits that would average most people’s yearly rent. Often it’s hard to relate to these famous individuals and their extravagant lifestyles, which is why it’s so refreshing to see some of them using their stardom for a good cause. Recently celebrities and big name brands have been partnering to create pieces in which a portion, if not all, of the proceeds go to various charities. We all know celebrities have a passion for fashion, but now we’re seeing some creating fashion with a passion. It’s no secret Miley Cyrus had quite a year, most of which involved minimal clothing. She raked in millions swinging around the charts on her wrecking ball, and decided to bare it all again in partnership with Marc Jacobs. Miley and Marc Jacobs partnered with The NYU

According to their official website, “ The Human Rights Campaign is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality.” In the land of the free and home of the brave we should all support Sophia’s message: everyone deserves to be treated equally, regardless of sexual orientation. Michael Kors, a designer and celebrity in his own right, created the ‘100 Series Watch’ collection, benefitting The United Nations World Food Programme. WFP provides school meals to more than 24 million children each year. The collection features six watches in gold, silver, and
Skin Cancer Institute which furthers research efforts, enhances clinical services, and expands community programs to help overcome skin cancer. The white Marc Jacobs T-shirt shows Miley naked with the caption “Protect The Skin You’re In.” The T-shirts cost $35.00 and all of the proceeds from the sale of this shirt are donated to the NYU Skin Cancer Institute. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, however when found and removed early it’s almost always curable. Who knows, maybe Miley will change her lyrics to “We can stop and we will stop” skin cancer related deaths. Sophia Bush is another celebrity using her voice to spread a powerful message. The actress partnered with Joe Fresh to create a T-shirt benefitting The Human Rights Campaign. The T-shirt features two lip
rose gold. For every sale of the 100 Series Watch, Michael Kors will donate $25 to The United Nations World Food Programme. According to the Michael Kors website, “for every timepiece sold, 100 children in need will receive a nutritious meal.” With the watches costing $295 each, you can feel a little better about your splurge knowing that a portion of the profits will be going to a great cause. In a world where illnesses, inequality, and poverty are all part of our harsh realities, it’s uplifting to see celebrities using their star-power to bring awareness to some of these very worthy causes. Bringing fashion and philanthropy into the same realm is a wonderful way to make a difference in the world while still treating yourself to a little something special. We all know that fashion trends come and go, but here’s to hoping that this charitable trend is here to stay.

Fordham’s Fearless
Acacia Courtney By Caroline Sneider
G
et ready to feel inspired! Our cover girl is Fordham’s very own Acacia Courtney, Miss Connecticut, who recently made it to the top 15 in the 2014 Miss America pageant. MODE had the opportunity to chat with Acacia about her time at Fordham, the Miss America pageant, supporting two campaigns, starting her own charity and future plans. What was it like competing at the Miss America pageant? It was very surreal. The first time it really hit me was when I first announced myself on stage the first night of preliminaries. I actually got pretty emotional. It was one of those things you dream about and it was really happening- I had chills all over my body. I was really lucky the group of girls I competed with were very close. There was no drama, no maliciousness. I can honestly say I became very close friends with many of them and I will continue to keep in touch with them.

MODE MAGAZINE WINTER 2014
How did your time at Fordham help you get to Miss America? It definitely helped me prepare because time management skills are of the most important things you need whether competing at Miss America or even trying to get a job. I had to manage being in school full time, doing internships, trying to plan for my future, and compete in pageants, and maybe trying to have a social life on top of that. I learned to balance my time, prioritize, and not procrastinate. What is your favorite thing about Fordham? I love the community feeling. I was at the Rose Hill campus my freshmen and sophomore year and then transferred to the Lincoln Center campus my junior year. Since transferring I still feel like the Rose Hill campus is my home. I got so many good luck and support messages from my friends and professors at Fordham and those little things are what really matter. Also while getting ready to compete at Miss America, I got an internship at a government relations firm. Second semester I was very involved in horse racing. With the Triple Crown coming up I shadowed with NBC sports horse racing. I actually want to be a reporter at NBC sports especially for horse racing when I am older.
What are your future plans with the campaign and what are your future goals? I have a wonderful relationship with the Monday Campaigns. I was recently involved with the Climate Week in NYC and the Equator Awards. I was invited as a guest by Meatless Mondays who was there because meat consumption does have an impact on the environment when it comes to the resources we use for meat production. By cutting meat out of your diet once a week you are actually cutting down your carbon footprint. They invited me to be there as Miss Connecticut, be involved in the event put on by the UN, walk the red carpet, and speak about my involvement with Meatless Mondays. I got to sit in the second row and listen to Al Gore and Jane Goodall speak. It was very impactful because I knew I was involved in something that could make a big change. I am going to be starting a Move It Monday video series featuring little dance steps and basic steps people can incorporate into their daily lives to make a change.
“My biggest advice is to find something in the world that bothers you and do something about it because you can.”
How can Fordham students help your campaigns? In the past I have worked with the sustainability club here at Fordham to promote Meatless Mondays. The great thing about the campaign is that schools don’t need to change their menus but advertise the meatless options they already have. Move It Monday Will you continue pageants? is just taking a pledge at the beginning of the week I am Miss Connecticut until June and I look forward to making the to be more active. I would like to get Fordham more most of that. Because of my Miss Connecticut title and placement at involved and do some events. I want to get students Miss America, I have had a lot of racing opportunities come my way to speak up because they are the leaders of tomorrow and I definitely want to take those up. I am ready to see where my and the ones who are going to make the biggest life takes me. I still have one year of school left since I took a leave of impact. absence to be Miss Connecticut full time, but I want to get my degree and try to be on TV! What influenced you to start the Mondays Campaign? Growing up as a dancer I was always conscious about my health. I felt like there was a lot of pressure in the ballet world to look a certain way. My peers and myself were guilty of not focusing on what it means to be healthy but on how you look. I always took a very big issue with that and had a lot of body image issues. Going into Miss America I wanted to be very transparent on how I was preparing for the swimsuit portion of competition. I connected with the Monday’s Campaign a few years ago, and personally I am a vegetarian, but I liked the message of Meatless Mondays. It didn’t force anyone to change but encouraged him or her to take small steps that can make a big difference. Also I felt it tied in well with the Move it Monday Campaign. Overall, I decided to promote those two campaigns as my personal platform because they are close to my heart and are very timely with the obesity epidemic in the United States. Also, it’s a program that works with any audience and can speak to anyone.

What inspired you to start the organization Racing for Home in 2012? I grew up riding and after doing some research I discovered that after race horses are done racing they are sent to slaughter houses. Very few people want to adopt them because they are hard to manage or are stereotypically hotheaded, dangerous- all these preconceived notions about what thoroughbreds actually are. I always said if I got my own horse I would want it to be a thoroughbred that has come off the track. I would work hands on with it because that’s what I enjoy the most. Long story short, one turned into fifteen. I decided to file for 5013C status (certified non-profit) in 2012. My mom trains with me and we got a lot of people in Connecticut to come on board with us. My organization serves as what I call the middleman. We take them off the route to the slaughterhouse, retrain them, and hopefully adopt them out to forever homes. Two of our horses will be with us forever but the rest have found permanent homes. It’s really great to see the transformation and a second chance for fruition. Some get adopted to be show horses, companions, whatever it is. It is one of the most rewording things I have ever gotten to do.

What was the biggest challenge with starting Racing for Home? The paper work to become a registered nonprofit. I had to fill out a giant binder but I wanted to do it. It really makes you think because it’s like running a business. I was 18 and had no idea how to do any of it. I had to think about a budget for the next five years. Thinking that all through made me savvier for how everything works. Any other major lessons you learned through starting the organization? Don’t underestimate the power of second chances. People think these horses can’t do anything but race but in reality they can. I think this idea can also carry over to people. When you don’t succeed in one thing there is always the opportunity to succeed in something else. I tried to keep that mentality in everything I try – that it doesn’t always stop where you think it will.

Any advice for someone looking to start his or her own philanthropy? The biggest thing is don’t think one person cannot make a difference and one voice doesn’t matter. Thousands of horses get sent to slaughterhouses each year and I have only worked with fifteen, but to those few that I have worked with it makes all the difference. It sounds cliché to say the power of one but my biggest advice is to find something in the world that bothers you and do something about it because you can.

9 Ways to
Score Your Dream Internship By: Natalie Zisa Here at Mode, we know Fordham is full of ambitious girls who are aware of the importance of an internship. Unfortunately, the most coveted ones are in high demand. Despite the pressure it puts on college students, there’s no denying how valuable one can be. I’ve compiled a list of 9 things to help you score your dream internship, because I do believe dream internships lead to dream jobs.
1. Network
Networking, as common as it is can still be an awkward thing to navigate. Sometimes there will be specific networking events and other times it will be as random as conversation at a family party. If you hear the words, “I know someone who works at (insert dream job here),” don’t be afraid to ask for their contact information. It is then your responsibility to keep in touch with those you meet and strategically present yourself as someone who is worth putting in a good word for. This being said, first impressions are important. If people automatically like you, they’ll have no problem doing you a favor. Keep in mind you never know who may be able to help you. I’ve reached out to someone I went to middle school with, as well as my cousins and their friends who have all been willing to use their connections to help me land my dream internship.
2. Take Advantage of Career Services
I came into college thinking that I could handle editing my own resume and cover letter, but it wasn’t until I went to Career Services that I realized their help was quite necessary. After making an appointment, I was able to cut down my resume and better organize my cover letter. I also receive frequent emails about internship fairs on campus, which are great places to give out newly revised resumes and apply your networking skills.
3. Be Active on Social Media
There’s no doubt that social media plays a role in job searching. We all know employers look at our Facebook pages so we shouldn’t post any party pics. But it takes more than just a clean profile to secure the job. Nowadays, employers look for people with an active social media presence. I personally think Twitter and Facebook help to “brand” yourself. They are effective ways to interact with the company and post about the things that you’re passionate about. Whether it’s regarding work, school, or life in general, use it as an opportunity to showcase what you can’t on a resume.

4. Join the Right Clubs
It makes sense that I joined Mode since I want to work at a magazine one day. Because of it I’m able to provide companies with writing samples before they even ask for it. No matter what your dream is, use your clubs on campus to give you experience. While I do think it’s great that you can be apart of a variety of clubs, as a sophomore or junior it’s important to narrow your involvement. Employers will value your dedication by allowing yourself to take on more important roles.
5. Do Your Research
Most internships won’t just fall onto your lap. You’ll have to seek out opportunities and look up deadlines and requirements, as well as be informed of the company’s latest achievements and their most prominent employees. If you don’t know enough about a company to do that, you just set off a red flag in the employer’s eyes.
6. Learn How to Write Good Emails
Most of the time you’re communicating with someone over email long before you meet them in person. Though these emails will generally follow the same format, it’s important to know the right balance between friendly and professional. You want to come off as a personable person, as well as someone who knows how to conduct themselves in a business environment.
8. Ace the Interview
No matter how often you go on an interview, they’re always nerve wracking. Between wearing the proper clothing to saying the right things, it’s hard to be on your game all of the time. You’ll want to know how to present the information on your resume, anticipate questions they’re going to ask, and ask questions in return. Most importantly, keep calm and be yourself. In the fifteen minutes you get to impress these people, it’s a lot harder to make yourself someone you’re not than to embrace the qualities you already do have.
7. Start Small
My first internship was during my senior year of high school. The goal was to intern at a well-known magazine in my area, but they only accepted college students. So I chose to email a smaller publication that was right in my town. Though working in such a small office was a different experience than that of a big company, I believe their ability to give me more responsibility laid the foundation for my editing skills. And I don’t doubt that having an internship that early on has made me a better candidate. It’s understood that most people will not get an internship at Seventeen or Cosmo right off the bat, but there’s nothing wrong with starting small.
9. Love the Process
It’s definitely unfair that we have to put ourselves in a highly competitive environment for internships that are usually unpaid and often require running errands, but we truly have to keep our eyes on the prize. Our chances of getting a job increase with each internship we have, so this also means we should choose them wisely. Only apply and accept those that you’re going to get the most out of. You have to love the office environment, the people, the potential perks, and the work you’re doing. Of course you will make sacrifices and not everything will live up to your expectations, but that’s all apart of the process. Enjoy the fact that you have this time to explore different career paths 39 without any real commitment.
