Students Leave Campus As Cases Spike By ALLIE STOFER Asst. News Editor

Students who resided on Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus during the fall semester are leaving until classes resume in February. Due to the pandemic, the new protocol was already requiring students to leave campus before Thanksgiving to limit travel to and from campus. Move-out comes only two weeks after a spike in COVID-19 cases on campus, causing students to question the safety of an in-person spring semester.

SJP Faces Fordham in Court Again

Safety of Living in the Dorms Living on Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus during the fall semester was bound to look different than previous semesters due to COVID-19. Fordham’s university-wide infection rate surpassed 1% for the first time this semester as of Nov. 13, and public schools in New York have closed as well due to the city-wide spike. On Nov. 24, a Fordham Forward update announced that the university-wide infection rate is at 1.31%. “Due to the recent rise of COVID cases, I will be emptying my entire apartment prior to winter break in case I decide not to return to my dorm for the spring semester,” Stevie Martin, Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) ’23, said.

However, this game also marked the beginning of a new, hopeful era for the program after several months of misfortune. First, a defeat on March 7 against Virginia Commonwealth University in the 2020 A10 Tournament semifinal ended its run for a second straight conference title. Then, the team’s berth in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament was revoked when the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. To complicate matters, after a summer in isolation, star player Bryson Cavanaugh, Fordham College at Rose Hill (FCRH) ’21, announced in October via Instagram that he would not be returning to play for Fordham in the 2020-21 season.

Fordham Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) faced Fordham University in the appellate division of the New York State Supreme Court on Nov. 24, continuing its fiveyear battle to gain official recognition as a club on campus. Cooperating Counsel Alan Levine said “it is very difficult to tell” how long it will take the judges to make a decision, but he said if they lose, they will appeal to the New York State Court of Appeals, and they expect the same course of action from Fordham if SJP wins. Levine, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) and Palestine Legal were responsible for filing the lawsuit on behalf of the students of SJP in 2017 — two years after SJP submitted an application to form the club. On Aug. 5, 2019, the court ruled that Fordham should recognize SJP as an official club. Fordham appealed the court order on Jan. 27, 2020, claiming that the university’s decision to ban the club was based on the premise that a chapter of SJP on campus is not in the “best interests” of Fordham’s students, according to Bob Howe, assistant vice president for communications. Katherine Kuemerle, Fordham College at Lincoln Center (FCLC) ’21 and treasurer of SJP, said that throughout the prolonged periods between court dates, SJP has maintained frequent contact with both Palestine Legal and the CCR.

Vatican Defrocks Alum Immunity Endgame

An eight-month period without Fordham sports has finally ended. In its season opener, Fordham women’s basketball nearly blew a large lead but hung on to defeat the Stony Brook University (SBU) Seawolves, 62-58. In some ways, this victory is a continuation of the team’s previous success. Since Stephanie Gaitley was hired as head coach in 2011, the team has become a mainstay in the upper echelons of Atlantic 10 (A10) women’s basketball. The Rams’ victory against a stout opponent like Stony Brook, reigning finalists in the America East conference, sets the tone for another successful season in the Bronx.
