LatinxLiteratureUnbound Undoing Ethnic Expectation Ralph E. Rodriguez Since the 1990s, there has been unparalleled growth in the literary output from an ever more diverse group of Latina/o writers. The extant criticism, however, has yet to catch up with the diversity of writers we label Latinx and the range of themes about which they write. Little sustained scholarly attention has been paid, moreover, to the very category? Latinx? under which we group this literature. Latinx Literature Unbound, thus, begins with a fundamental question: ?What does it mean to label a work of literature or an entire corpus of literature Latinx?? Latinx Literature Unbound argues that there may be more salubrious taxonomies than Latinx for organizing and analyzing this literature. Following a neo-formalist interpretive model that privileges reading as a temporal, meaning-making event, the book argues that genre may be a more durable category for analyzing this literature.

MonkeyTrouble The Scandal of Posthumanism Christopher Peterson The human has become a conspicuous blind spot for many theorists seeking to extend hospitality to animals, plants, and even insentient things. The displacement of the human is essential and urgent, yet given the humanist presumption that animals lack a number of allegedly unique human capacities, such as language, reason, and awareness of mortality, we ought to remain cautious about laying claim to any power to eradicate anthropocentrism altogether. Monkey Trouble argues that the turn toward immanence in contemporary posthumanism promotes a cosmocracy that absolves one from engaging in those discriminatory decisions that condition hospitality as such. Anthropocentrism, Peterson argues, cannot be displaced through a logic of reversal that elevates immanence above transcendence, horizontality over verticality. This decentering must cultivate instead a human/nonhuman relationality that affirms the immanent transcendency spawned by our phantasmatic humanness.

PlatoandtheInventionof Life Michael Naas Though the question of life (whether bios or z??) is not the explicit focus of any Platonic dialogue, it is, this book argues, an absolutely central and structuring question for all of Plato?s thought. This is nowhere more evident than in the Statesman, where the central myth of the two ages sketches out two very different kinds and valences of life and being. Plato and the Invention of Life offers a reading of Plato?s Statesman in order to ask about the question of life and being in Plato?s thought more generally. By characterizing being in terms of life, Plato in many of his later dialogues, including the Statesman, begins to discover? or, better, to invent? a notion of true or real life that would be opposed to all merely biological or animal life, a form of life that would be more valuable than everything we call life and every life that can actually be lived.

The term stasis, which refers both to the state and to revolution against it, offers a tension that helps to show how the democratic imperative is presupposed by the logic of sovereignty, and how agonism is more primary than exclusion. In elaborating this ancient but only recently recovered concept of stasis, Vardoulakis illustrates the radical potential of democracy to move beyond the logic of exclusion and the ruse of sovereignty.
