H IG HL I G H TS IN L ITE R ATUR E & CULTURAL STUDI ES Education at War: The Fight for Students of Color in America’s Public Schools Arshad Imtiaz Ali and Tracy Lachica Buenavista, Editors

Finance Fictions

Education at War seeks to shape educational research and practice to more explicitly consider the relationship between education, capitalism, and war, and its impact on students of color. The contemporary specter of war has become a central way that racism and materialism become manifested and practiced within public education systems, and it is students of color who are most adversely affected by this nexus. Education at War addresses the absence of youth-centered discussions regarding education within the political context of neoliberalism and war and provides important perspectives on which to ground critical discussions about these issues among students and their families, education scholars and teachers, administrators, and policymakers.

“Finance Fictions is a remarkable achievement. Arne De Boever blends detailed attention to high finance with close readings of an unexpected array . . . from American Psycho to Quentin Meillassoux’s writings on science fiction. The book offers an original and necessary perspective on the fate of the realist novel in an age of collateralized debt obligations, and raises provocative questions about what De Boever calls the ‘financialization of the novel itself.’”—David Golumbia, author of The Politics of Bitcoin: Software as Right-Wing Extremism

Expectation: Philosophy, Literature JEAN-LUC NANCY Translated by Robert Bononno Introduction by Jean-Michel Rabaté

The Last Professors

“Expectation stages a courtship between philosophy and literature that has never been presented with such wit, grace, and finesse. Nancy’s book offers both an epithalamium and a pregnant poetics, a poetics of awakening and emergence— poetics as obstetrics ushering in new ‘senses’ in and of the world, plus strong and luminescent poems never seen in English before.”—from Jean-Michel Rabaté’s Introduction Expectation is a major volume of Jean-Luc Nancy’s writings on literature, written across three decades but, for the most part, previously unavailable in English. More substantial than literary criticism, these essays collectively negotiate literature’s relation to philosophy.

The Corporate University and the Fate of the Humanities FRANK DONOGHUE Tenth Anniversary Edition with a New Introduction

“People sometimes believe that they were born too late or too early. After reading Donoghue’s book, I feel that I have timed it just right, for it seems that I have had a career that would not have been available to me had I entered the world 50 years later. Just lucky, I guess.”—Stanley Fish, New York Times This new edition includes a substantial Introduction that elaborates on recent developments and offers tough but productive analysis that will be crucial for today’s academics to heed.

Freud’s Jaw and Other Lost Objects

A Life of Gender and Spiritual Transitions MICHAEL DILLON/LOBZANG JIVAKA Edited by Jacob Lau and Cameron Partridge Foreword by Susan Stryker

Fractured Subjectivity in the Face of Cancer LANA LIN

What does it mean to live with life-threatening illness? Freud’s Jaw and Other Lost Objects illuminates the vulnerabilities of the human body and how human beings suffer harm. In particular, it examines how cancer disrupts feelings of bodily integrity and agency. Freud’s Jaw asks what are the psychic effects of surviving in proximity to one’s mortality, and it suggests that violences stemming from social, cultural, and biological environments condition the burden of such injury. Lin proposes that the prospect of imminent destruction paradoxically incites creativity. The afflicted are obliged to devise means to reinstate, at least temporarily, their destabilized physical and psychic unity through creative, reparative projects of love and writing.

“The importance of this work to the history of sexuality— and especially to the history of transsexuality—cannot be overstated.”—Jose Ignacio Cabezon, University of California, Santa Barbara “In his gripping autobiography, Dillon finds new answers to enduring questions about gender. At the same time, he never manages to solve the puzzle of his own identity and dies in the pursuit of transcendence. His memoir deserves a place alongside the great spiritual narratives, from Augustine to Merton.”— Pagan Kennedy, author of The First Man-Made Man “Dillon’s memoir . . . show(s) continuity of concerns with those of transgender individuals today.”—Publishers Weekly

H IG HL I G H TS IN L ITE R ATUR E & CULTURAL STUDI ES The Hawthorn Archive

Flashpoints for Asian American Studies

The Hawthorn Archive, named after the richly fabled tree, has long welcomed the participants in the various EuroAmerican social struggles against slavery, racial capitalism, imperialism, and authoritarian forms of order. Housed by the Archive are autonomous radicals, runaways, abolitionists, commoners, and dreamers who no longer live as obedient or merely resistant subjects. In this innovative, genre- and format-bending publication, Avery F. Gordon, the “keeper” of the Archive, presents a selection of its documents—original and compelling essays, letters, cultural analyses, images, photographs, conversations, friendship exchanges, and collaborations with various artists. The Hawthorn Archive represents voices from the utopian margins, where fact, fiction, theory, and image converge.

“Flashpoints for Asian American Studies offers an ambitious, bracing, and wide-ranging critique of Asian American studies by practitioners within the field. It calls for a wholesale reconsideration of how Asian American studies operates inside and outside universities; how it theorizes, selects, and defines its subjects and constituencies; and how it functions as an academic and political project. This volume presents a highly original reassessment from the inside of Asian American studies that is unparalleled in terms of its breadth and sustainment.”—Daryl Maeda, University of Colorado, Boulder

Creating and Sustaining Affordable Housing in New York CAROL LAMBERG

Google Me

One-Click Democracy BARBARA CASSIN Translated by Michael Syrotinski

This book illustrates examples of successful community development on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and in the Bronx, using seven different methods of finance, only one of which is still available today. The buildings were developed between 1975 and 1997. Part one of the book is the “West Bronx Story,” which tells about the eighteen buildings that comprise New Settlement Apartments in the Bronx. The “Story” illustrates the dramatic transformation of a devastated neighborhood into a thriving community. Part two of the book, “A Tale of Two Bridges,” illustrates a different path to success. The redevelopment of this area in the Lower East Side of Manhattan involved six different Federal housing programs, and all the buildings remain in great shape today, forty years later.

“A readable and entertaining, yet serious indictment of informational culture. Cassin’s reflections give us a critical space to consider the cost of our acquiescence to the quantification of culture that lies at the heart of today’s information-driven capitalism.”—Mark B. N. Hansen, Duke University In this witty and polemical critique, the philosopher Barbara Cassin takes aim at Google and our culture of big data. While impressed by the search engine’s brilliance, Cassin enlists her formidable knowledge of the rhetorical tradition to challenge the Google myth of a “good” tech company and its “democracy of clicks,” laying bare the philosophical poverty and political naïveté that underwrites its founding slogans: “Organize the world’s information” and “Don’t be evil.” 176 PAGES, 5 1/2 X 8 ½, 2 B/W ILLUSTRATIONS 9780823278077, PAPERBACK, $22.95, £18.99 Meaning Systems SIMULTANEOUS ELECTRONIC EDITION AVAILABLE

PHILOSOPHY & THEORY Derrida after the End of Writing

The Forgiveness to Come

“This book is not for you—if you think the specter of Derrida can be exorcised. Clayton Crockett has millennially updated and multi-discursively refreshed deconstruction itself. With transdisciplinary panache and a haunting intimacy, this leading philosopher of religion brings forth the political theologian and new materialist Derrida could only become postmortem.”—Catherine Keller, George T. Cobb Professor of Constructive Theology, Drew University, and author of Intercarnations: Exercises in Theological Possibility Derrida After the End of Writing argues for the importance of reading Derrida’s later work from a new materialist perspective. In conversation with Heidegger, Lacan, and Deleuze, and critically engaging newer philosophies of speculative realism and object-oriented ontology, Crockett claims that Derrida was never a linguistic idealist

“An extremely well-written, subtle, and moving meditation on the impasses of forgiveness in the face of the Holocaust and other unforgivable crimes, challenging our notions of what it means to be a person and whether there is a universal order of human beings that might allow perpetrator and victim to recognize in each other a shared humanity. . . . “Everything is in flux, as we are told over and over again. And yet, these are fluxes in which nothing ever really changes. . . . Other thinkers have characterized globalized and financialized capitalism in this way; Neyrat sees it as a dilemma for critical thought as well. . . . In a world where anything can be anyplace, and anything can switch places with anything else, philosophy must insist on its power to be, not everyplace, but noplace. It must never fit in, but always disturb its context . . . maintaining a relation with the very Outside that our dominant social, economic, and intellectual conditions seek to deny or suppress . . . Above all, Atopias is a work of ethics, exhorting us to recognize and find room for the many forms of existence with whom we share our planet.”—Steven Shaviro, from the Foreword

PHILOSOPHY & THEORY Portrait

Of Stigmatology: Punctuation as Experience

Portraits, this book suggests, unlock the paradoxes of subjectivity. Nancy shows how the portrait, far from conveying a sitter’s self-sameness, is suspended between proximity and distance, likeness and strangeness, representation and presentation, the faithful and the forceful. A portrait can identify an individual, but it can also express a more complex double movement of approach and withdrawal. Nancy’s readings range from carvings on ancient drinking vessels to recent experimental or parodic pieces in which sitters are rendered in the ‘media’ of their own blood, germ culture, or DNA. The forms of appearing that mark portraits can serve to renew our exploration of the human figure today. At stake is what Nancy calls “the very possibility of our being present.”

“From ontology to linguistics, from learned treatise to comic book, the grace of this fascinating text brings being back to the infinity of its cut.”—Catherine Malabou “Peter Szendy’s brilliant reflections on the punctuation of experience make for a magnificent composition: a new philosophy of the sensible focused on how one feels oneself feeling . . . . Never before have exclamation points, dashes, interrogatives, full stops, and quotation marks been treated so existentially; never before has the musicality of existence been so keenly tied to its notation; never before has the distance between points been used so effectively as a measure of life-span. In the “pows!” and “blams” of comic-book blows, glimmers of political violence come into focus. This is an amazing work of philosophy, aesthetics, media, and critique!!!”—Emily Apter

Power of Gentleness

Deconstructing the Death Penalty

Meditations on the Risk of Living ANNE DUFOURMANTELLE Translated by Katherine Payne and Vincent Sallé Foreword by Catherine Malabou

Derrida’s Seminars and the New Abolitionism Kelly Oliver and Stephanie M. Straub, Editors

“Deconstructing the Death Penalty. . . offers an indispensable reckoning with deconstruction’s legacy and relevance to current debates around the question of sovereignty and the state’s monopoly on violence.”—David Lloyd, University of California, Riverside

“Power of Gentleness is an important text that teaches us, comforts us, disturbs us too.”—Catherine Malabou The simplicity of gentleness is misleading. It is an active passivity that may become an extraordinary force of resistance within ethics and politics. In this powerful rethinking by a renowned philosopher and psychoanalyst whose untimely death captured worldwide attention, gentleness becomes a series of embodied paradoxes: power that is also soft, nobility that is also humble, fragility that can subvert the status quo. Against a risk-averse society that crushes human beings “gently,” Dufourmantelle celebrates the uncompromising gentleness discovered by Gandhi and other revolutionaries. Within the despair confided by her patients, she traces the force of resistance and intangible magic that gentleness offers to ordinary women and men who fully embrace the risk of living.

U.S. and Caribbean Literatures amid the Debris of Legal Personhood ANGELA NAIMOU

“Once again Vincent Lloyd has written an insightful, demanding, even daring book, and this time with an irritating title straight out of the 1960s. Lloyd throws down a stinging challenge to all those of us who cling to idolatries of race, class, and gender as well as to our privileges in the classroom, the boardroom, and the pulpit. We have betrayed black theology in our failure to uphold the wisdom of the marginalized, the cherished people of God.”—M. Shawn Copeland, Boston College

Winner, 2016 Association for the Study of the Arts of the Present Book Prize Honorable Mention, William Sanders Scarborough Prize, MLA

“Angela Naimou’s superbly written Salvage Work is one of the smartest responses to Giorgio Agamben’s ‘death-bound theories of legal personhood.’ Rather than take the refugee as the singular figure for theorizing the limits of sovereignty and the subject of law, Naimou studies the disruptions to a liberal rights paradigm through her focus on equally troubling cases of exceptional personhood in the figures of, among others, the slave, the disappeared, the corporation, the sailor, the fugitive, and the fetus. The legal and political insights are all the more powerful because they emerge from meticulous close readings.”—Joseph R. Slaughter, Columbia University

The Postcolonial Contemporary

Sexual Disorientations

This volume invokes the “postcolonial contemporary” in order to recognize and reflect upon the emphatically postcolonial character of the contemporary conjuncture, as well as to inquire into whether postcolonial criticism can adequately grasp it. Neither simply for nor against postcolonialism, the volume seeks to cut across this false alternative, and to think with postcolonial theory about political contemporaneity. In twelve essays spanning history, anthropology, literature, geography, and indigenous studies, The Postcolonial Contemporary seeks to move beyond the habitual oppositions that have often characterized the field, such as universal vs. particular; Marxism vs. postcolonialism; and politics vs. culture.

“This volume compellingly queers what we thought we knew about sexuality and temporality in Christian texts, interpretations, and theologies. Beginning with the question of historiography in the study of ancient texts, it moves through into the queer time of ethics and theology. Bodies, texts, and time race forward, touch, pause, and tarry; they fall into catastrophe, witness, cry out, and are haunted by pain and hope; yet still they rehome readers, or afford queer pleasure. Sexual Disorientations enlivens our reading of these religious texts by compellingly queering their temporalities and affects.”—Erin Runions, Pomona College

LITERARY CRITICISM Experiments in Exile

Secular Lyric

“The first response of many readers may be to wonder what on earth links C.L.R. James and Hélio Oiticica This book’s critical themes of the motley crew, of theorizing issues of contact, of aesthetic sociality all answer the question well. What is crucial is that two such disparate characters, both contending with issues of exile, illegality and citizenship, each developed similar strategies for understanding culture and for projecting a future (even futuristic in Oiticica’s case) potential.”—Aldon Lynn Nielsen, Pennsylvania State University

“In this thoughtful and original study John Michael explores the ways in which Poe, Whitman, and Dickinson adapted and re-shaped the lyric in response to the challenges of secular modernity. Race and Materiality in the Mid-Nineteenth Century CRISTIN ELLIS

Monkey Trouble

From the eighteenth-century abolitionist motto “Am I Not a Man and a Brother?” to the Civil Rights-era declaration “I AM a Man,” antiracism has engaged in a struggle for the recognition of black humanity. It has done so, however, even as the very definition of the human has been called into question by the biological sciences. Antebellum Posthuman argues that this conflict between liberal humanism and biological materialism first emerged as a key question in the antebellum era. Engaging the works of Douglass, Thoreau, Whitman, and Dickinson, and turning to contemporary debates now unfolding between posthumanist and critical race theorists, Ellis demonstrates how this antebellum posthumanism highlights the difficulty of reconciling materialist ontologies of the human with the project of social justice.

The Scandal of Posthumanism CHRISTOPHER PETERSON

“Posthumanists, new materialists, neovitalists, cosmopoliticians, accelerationists, xenofeminists, post-poststructuralists, and speculative realists will have much to argue with here. But this is an argument they—we—would be well advised to have at this historical moment—a decade or two into the broader ‘nonhuman turn’—given the often baroque claims, naïve enthusiasms, and extravagant contradictions performed in its name. In Peterson’s meticulous and elliptical critique we encounter a forceful CounterReformation against the more heretical proclamations of posthumanism; along with a nuanced insistence that—when all is said and done—we are human, all too human, after all.” —Dominic Pettman, The New School for Social Research

The Mark of Theory

Inscriptive Figures, Poststructuralist Prehistories ANDREA BACHNER

Mocking Bird Technologies: The Poetics of Parroting, Mimicry, and Other Starling Tropes Christopher GoGwilt and Melanie D. Holm, Editors

“By the sheer force of its sophistication and range, this book demands that we engage anew with poststructuralist theory’s evolving potentialities—in particular, with its intimate ties to the politics and ethics of wounding.” —Rey Chow, Duke University What imaginaries, tropes, and media have shaped how we theorize? The Mark of Theory argues that inscription constitutes one of the master metaphors of contemporary theory. In focusing on materiality and mediation The Mark of Theory shows how inscriptive practices shape conceptual thought, as well as political and ethical choices. By contextualizing the fraught relationship between materiality and signification, The Mark of Theory lays the ground for a politics of theory that begins there where theory and politics are no longer conflated.

Mocking Bird Technologies brings together a range of perspectives to offer an extended meditation on bird mimicry in literature: the way birds mimic humans, the way humans mimic birds, and the way mimicry of any kind involves technologies that extend across as well as beyond languages and species. The essays examine the historical, poetic, and semiotic problem of mimesis exemplified both by the imitative behavior of parrots, starlings, and other mocking birds, and by the poetic trope of such birds in a range of literary traditions. Drawing from a cross-section of traditional periods and fields in literary studies, the collection offers new models for combining comparative and global studies of literature and culture. 320 PAGES, 20 B/W ILLUSTRATIONS 9780823278497, PAPERBACK, $35.00, £28.99 SIMULTANEOUS ELECTRONIC EDITION AVAILABLE

LITERARY CRITICISM Reified Life

Indecorous Thinking

The 2008 economic crisis solidified the dominion of neoliberal and financial capital to organize human societies much to the detriment of the world’s populations. Reified Life theorizes the dangerous social implications of a posthuman future, whereby human agency is secondary to algorithmic processes, digital protocols, speculative financial instruments, and nonhuman market and technological forces. As such, Reified Life addresses the most pressing political question of the 21st century: what forms of life are free and what forms are perceived legally and economically as surplus or expendable, human and otherwise?

“A rich and sustaining book, one anyone working in the field of English Renaissance literature will want to own and have ready to hand.”—Gordon Teskey, Harvard University “It is rare to encounter a book as learned, engaging, thorough, and innovative as Colleen Rosenfeld’s Indecorous Thinking. Rosenfeld deftly challenges a long-held truism of literary history: that sprezzatura, or the concealment of labor, was a goal uniformly shared by celebrated English poets. To the contrary, Rosenfeld shows, early modern writers frequently practiced ‘open art,’ or art that makes conspicuous—even audacious—use of figures of speech. Refusing to confine itself to what uncontestably is, this poetry works instead in the subjunctive mood to imagine a world constructed otherwise.”—Melissa Sanchez, University of Pennsylvania

Financial and Psychic Economies in Victorian Form ANNA KORNBLUH

Last Things

“If you want to understand what goes on today, how a madness like the 2008 meltdown was possible, read Realizing Capital!”—Slavoj Žižek “Essential reading for anyone wishing to follow cutting edge work on the form of the Victorian novel.”—Adela Pinch, SEL “This highly original and far-reaching book puts Marx and Freud into an exciting new dialogue with the Victorian novel. Kornbluh reads these imposing thinkers as engaged in the same project as the realist novelists, all of them struggling to defamiliarize the frighteningly fictitious character of capital. [The] book culminates in a tour de force reading of Marx’s Capital as a Bildungsroman and a radical rethinking of Freud’s ‘psychic economy.’”—Caroline Levine, Cornell University

Disastrous Form from Kant to Hujar JACQUES KHALIP

“This is a book whose intelligence and insight the academy desperately needs. It displays a conceptual beauty in bringing the contemporary ‘crisis’ in Romantic studies into contact with the question of ‘lastness’—a question that is, in many ways, always already the crisis of Romanticism. Approaching the ‘last’ as what always comes after itself, Khalip thinks lastness as the persistence, in a minor, non-apocalyptic key, of what decompletes, derealizes, or dephenomenalizes the ‘world.’ Pursuing that thought through bravura readings, Khalip affords his readers the thrill of intellectual discovery while challenging them to ask if such discoveries themselves are the effect of our determination by lastness.”—Lee Edelman, Tufts University

The Technological Introject

GARY KEENAN Foreword by Alice Fulton

Friedrich Kittler between Implementation and the Incalculable Jeffrey Champlin and Antje Pfannkuchen, Editors Afterword by Avital Ronell

“Indebted to the great American tradition of Stevens and Ashbery, Gary Keenan’s profound and necessary poems are meditations on ‘the solace of uncertainty’ and ‘the work of being born.’ Out of ‘the slow storm’ of existence as ‘tulips dry into paper flames,’ they “start in pain and end in revelation.’ Read them.”—L. S. Asekoff

“Spearheaded by New York philosophy icon Avital Ronell, this book pays tribute to Germany’s most controversial yet most original media theorist, who completely changed the German academic landscape by following his declared goal to drive the human out of the humanities. In completely new and exciting ways, the essays collected in this important volume introduce Friedrich Kittler’s radical and challenging approach to the study of Western culture, literature, and philosophy to an American audience.”—Arne Hocker, University of Colorado, Boulder

“The seasons of Henry James—the stirring hesitations and queer speculation and spoiled opportunities and inner disquisitions—are the scintillating scrim through which each of these poems is shot, venting the novelist’s fabric and retaining something of his sensorium on their way elsewhere. These highly original, deliciously unpredictable, exquisitely fitted, embodied poems account and construct a contemporary erotics that rouses Jamesian mentation. ‘And only after will you think to call it sadism: not to be removed from but kept in such a trick garden.’”—Brian Blanchfield

The Mediated Mind

Poetry and Mind

Affect, Ephemera, and Consumerism in the Nineteenth Century SUSAN ZIEGER

“Poetry and Mind is an excellent book that performs its own thesis as a ‘thinking experiment’ that is part classical argument and part poetic suggestion. In the breathtaking range of literary and philological knowledge on display, we have a form of verification built on Wittgensteinian perspicuity— on the very brilliance of its own learning. Many scholars and artists have attempted the Tractatarian form before, but seldom with Dubreuil’s success.”—John Ó Maoilearca, Kingston University An elliptic response to Wittgenstein’s point of arrival in the Tractatus, Poetry and Mind is first and foremost an interdisciplinary study of poetry, drawing on literary theory, philosophy, and cognitive science.

How did we arrive at our contemporary consumer media economy? Why are we now fixated on screens, imbibing information that constantly expires, and longing for more direct or authentic kinds of experience? This book answers these questions by revisiting a previous media revolution, the nineteenth-century explosion of mass print. Like our own smartphone screens, printed paper and imprinted objects touched the most intimate regions of nineteenthcentury life. This book illuminates their affects – their embodied, emotional, mental, and intersubjective dimensions. How did consumers incorporate mass culture, remaking it and themselves, in material and psychological practices? Building on literary studies, media history, social history, and affect studies, it shows how we got our own ideas about the mediated life of the mind.

POLITICAL THEORY Liturgical Power

Other Others

“Liturgical Power makes a significant contribution to liturgical studies through its ability to illuminate Agamben’s significant work on the subject in his more recent writings. The book demonstrates first-rate scholarship in that it takes up a significant philological discussion that is pursued across centuries and various sources.”—Colby Dickinson, Loyola University Chicago “Heron’s book offers a magisterial reconstruction of the Christian idea of government. Liturgical Power makes a crucially important intervention into the emerging field of political theology.”—Miguel Vatter, University of New South Wales

“Dolgopolski’s Other Others is the most ambitious work I have read in the field of Jewish political and philosophical though in some time. It is creative, synthetic, well written and conceptually clear. Dolgopolski is a master of his material and an innovator. The combination makes for a scintillating piece of scholarship.”—Sarah Hammerschlag, University of Chicago Excluding certain others from a society, while still tolerating diversity, stabilizes a political order. Or does it? Revisiting this classical question of political theory, this book turns to the Talmud. That late ancient body of text and thought displays a new concept of the political, and thus a new take on the question of excluded others.

On the Nature of Marx’s Things

Stasis Before the State

Translation as Necrophilology JACQUES LEZR Foreword by Vittorio Morfino

Nine Theses on Agonistic Democracy DIMITRIS VARDOULAKIS

“A beautiful and lyrical book. Over the course of nine theses Vardoulakis contends with some of the central issues of contemporary politics and shows that we need not fear conflict but should embrace it as a critical aspect of democratic life.”—James Martel, San Francisco State University “Against the naïve utopias of radical democracy and of liberal democracy alike, Vardoulakis presents us with ‘agonistic democracy’—a non-teleological and paradoxical political practice that constitutes the condition of possibility as well as the only real alternative to sovereign power. Stasis before the State is a truly remarkable and memorable book.”—Cesare Casarino, University of Minnesota, Cultural Critique Senior Editor

“The project of returning ‘Marxist logic’ to a materialist and pragmatic approach has been underway for some years now. Jacques Lezra, plunging into this logic’s deepest reaches, discovers there a ‘language of things,’ exactly as in Lucretius; but also a language of singularities, as in Spinoza; and of differences, marshaled against the possibility of any system of general equivalences. What he calls ‘necrophilology’ intervenes wherever such systems would reinstall the fetishes of humanism to the heights from which they’ve been cast—as a rupture, a break. Is Lezra proposing an ontology? The word is heavy, but recalling Lucretius and Spinoza in this way certainly lightens its weight, and makes ontology powerfully viable for, and by means of, the critique of contemporary capitalism.“—Antonio Negri
