INTERVIEW
BRAD PITT GETS PERSONAL PAGE 20.
EDITORIAL A NEW EXPERIENCE
I
t’s my pleasure to introduce this first edition of the Ford Vignale magazine. This is an exciting moment for me because
we believe Ford Vignale heralds a new approach to the driver experience. Car manufacturers and journalists tend to throw around phrases like ‘more than a car’, but with the Ford Mondeo Vignale those words are more than just a catchy phrase. Ford Vignale reflects a philosophy we’ve developed at Ford about what you, the discerning modern driver, want from your car. Luxury but also efficiency. An experience that is sophisticated and smart at the same time. In other words, Ford Vignale is there to support the lifestyle of people like you. For whom time is at a premium, but who don’t believe that means having to compromise on the good things in life. I know because I feel the same way myself. This is why I was so delighted when I first saw the Ford Mondeo Vignale concept car. In design terms, it captures perfectly that contemporary, premium experience we were after. With all the newest Ford technology and innovations aimed at safety, sustainability and, of course, efficient energy solutions. Supported by a personalized service that includes your own dedicated Vignale Relationship Manager. Freeing up time you used to waste on petty irritations, such as arranging and driving to and from your next service, to spend it on truly life-enriching experiences. So it’s no coincidence this magazine is packed with smart, time-saving tips on the one hand and exhilarating ways to spend your time on the other. Whether that’s experiencing Europe’s most exciting roads or one of its most invigorating (but largely undiscovered) cities. It’s also no coincidence Brad Pitt is our cover interview – we can all imagine how time-efficient he needs to be with his hectic lifestyle!. I hope you enjoy reading the magazine as much as we did putting it together. For me, it heralds a fresh chapter in Ford’s history: the Vignale chapter. And I’m delighted you’re here to experience it with us from the start. Jim Farley Chairman & CEO Ford Europe EVP & President Europe, Middle East & Africa

FORD WORLD NEWS
THE NEW FORD GT SUPERCAR
The ultimate dream car This spring’s Geneva Motor Show saw Ford present its Performance line-up for Europe. A veritable feast for the eyes with Ford revealing both its all-new Focus RS high performance hatchback and the mind-blowing brand new Ford GT supercar. The Focus RS is equipped with an upgraded 2.3 litre four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that delivers in excess of 320 PS. This hot hatch debuts as an innovative Ford Performance
All-Wheel-Drive, making it a super smooth drive in every sense of the word. The all-new GT supercar is nothing more and nothing less than a dream car. The rear-wheel driven, midmounted engined, two-door coupe body is powered by a twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 producing more than 600 horsepower. While the use of lightweight carbon and innovative aerodynamics means the Ford GT is likely to leave the competition firmly in its rear-view mirror.
Goodbye steel, hello carbonfibre Ready for a more efficient, smoother and altogether smarter ride? Ford’s working on it. Carbon fibre is both extremely light (up to 50% lighter than conventional steel) and extremely strong. Making it an ideal material for building cars. Ford is accelerating R&D into low-cost, high-volume carbon. So in future Ford models could benefit from replacing steel with this lightweight material. Because a lighter vehicle also means greater fuel efficiency and enhanced performance. And who doesn’t want that? Ford Vignale

Cars that listen All Ford models launched in 2015 feature Ford SYNC 2 with Voice Control and Touch Screen – a smart, voice-controlled connectivity system for operating your phone, entertainment system, climate control and navigation. All you have to say is “I’m hungry”, for example, and the navigation system points the way to the nearest restaurants. It’s almost too smooth to be true. Other new technologies this year for the All-New Mondeo and All-New S-MAX include: > Intelligent All-Wheel Drive Each of the four wheels individually monitors the road surface and changing circumstances to provide just the right amount of power for maximum grip. > Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection When pedestrians are detected on the road ahead, the brakes apply themselves automatically if the driver does not respond to warnings. > Active Park Assist with Perpendicular Parking technology First offered on the new Ford Focus, this innovative system can reverse your car hands-free into spaces alongside other cars or parallel to the kerb. > Ford Adaptive Steering Adapts your steering relative to your vehicle speed. > Front Split View Camera technology When visibility at junctions or parking spaces is restricted, this 180-degree camera system installed at the front of the vehicle leaps to your assistance.
How Ford earned the title ‘World’s Greenest Brand’ After being runner-up in 2013, Ford was last year crowned the world’s greenest brand. In the words of brand rating agency Interbrand: “Sustainability is fully integrated into Ford’s overall business strategy. Continuing to invest in alternative energy sources and fuel-saving technologies – and educating consumers on its benefits – will be key to enhancing its business and brand value over time.” And it’s true: Ford works hard to invest in sustainable manufacturing, always be environmentally responsible, offer
transparency when it comes to business operations and manufacturing processes, and stay highly committed to reducing water usage and waste. But let the facts speak for themselves: > Between 2000 and 2013, Ford reduced its total global water usage by 61% – that’s more than 10 billion gallons. > Between 2007 and 2013, Ford reduced the average CO2 emissions of its European car fleet by 18%. > Waste to landfill per vehicle produced was reduced by 14% in 2013 compared with 2012.

Making driving easy. Very easy Like many of us, Ford is excited about the future potential of areas like mobility, connectivity, autonomous vehicles, customer experience and ‘big data’. Which is why it recently announced that it will be conducting 25 mobility experiments around the world this year. These range from ‘City Driving On-Demand’, a study into smarter car sharing, to ‘Painless Parking’, a smartphone app to help drivers find a parking space based on their personal preferences. 8

As Ford president Mark Fields puts it: “The experiments we’re undertaking today will lead to an all-new model of transportation and mobility within the next 10 years and beyond.” Each experiment addresses one or more of four global mega-trends for the automotive industry: urbanisation, rapid growth of the middle classes, changing consumer attitudes and concerns about air quality.
FORD DRIVING SKILLS FOR LIFE
‘ You’re just a few clicks away from picking up invaluable skills for the road’ Towards the end of 2015, Ford Driving Skills for Life – the award-winning driving training programme for 18- to 24-year-olds – will be rolled out across 30 countries worldwide. Literally hundreds of thousands of young people will become more responsible drivers as a result of the hands-on and online courses. So we put five quick questions to the managers of the programme, James Graham and Kyle Green. 1. What exactly is Ford Driving Skills for Life?
“Ford Driving Skills for Life began 12 years ago in the United States as an initiative of The Ford Motor Company Fund in the knowledge that car crashes are the leading cause of death for 18 - to 24-year-olds. Now extended across Europe it consists of hands-on and online training that teaches young drivers to be more aware of the potential dangers involved in being behind the wheel.” 2. So what do they learn?
“It’s an advanced driving training session during which attendees learn all the important vehicle handling techniques they’re unlikely to have been taught during their regular driving lessons. They learn how to get the car back in control, speed management, making proper decisions and how to recognize hazards. An important part of the course is about distracted driving: using smartphones, additional passengers and impaired driving – driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.”
3. What does a training session look like?
“By the end of 2015, 30 countries worldwide will be enrolled in the programme. Each country has its own specific issues regarding safe driving, so the driving skills taught are tailored to that country’s needs. However, one of the most popular training techniques is the Drink Driving Suit, which replicates the physical experience of being intoxicated behind the wheel. At first people laugh, but after a few minutes awareness kicks in: how could anyone drive when their abilities are this impaired?” 4. W hy is Ford taking on this responsibility?
“As a car maker, we feel we must. We’ve already provided training to over half a million people globally through the hands-on and online curriculum. And many more will be affected by it, as parents and friends benefit from the person attending’s improved skills and knowledge about driving responsibly. At the beginning of this year, 23 countries were involved – including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Romania,
Russia, Spain and the UK. And now another seven countries will follow suit during 2015.” 5. Suppose I’m a young driver and want to enrol. How does that work?
“Ford Driving Skills for Life is a free training programme. To subscribe, simply go to your local Driving Skills for Life website and you’re just a few clicks away from picking up invaluable skills for on the road.”

Exclusive colours
The new Ford Mondeo Vignale comes in various exclusive Ford Vignale colours. As well as Vignale Nocciola, Vignale Black and Vignale Silver, you can order your car in Vignale White – a pearlescent jewel-like shade that takes its inspiration from the rose metallic tones sometimes used by furniture and fashion designs. Joel Piaskowski, Executive Design Director for Ford Europe: “To design the best possible cars, we draw on the widest possible range of influences from beyond the world of automotive and across the globe.” The search for such inspiration is carried out by Ford’s futuring team at its Design Studio in Cologne, Germany. They follow closely global style trends in architecture, fashion and furniture. Elegant trim
The exclusive Ford Vignale handcrafted leather seats of the Ford Mondeo Vignale have an elegant, quilted, diamond-shaped trim. The hexagonal tone-on-tone quilting is also used to decorate the silky-smooth leather armrests. The design is inspired by eclectic takes on furniture, such as high-end sofas, that offer sleek, contemporary lines. Erika Tsubaki, Design Supervisor: “Our customers expect us to find new approaches to design that set us apart from other brands.” Finishing touch
In the world of Ford Vignale, every detail matters. This precise attention to detail can be
found in the interior and also on the exterior of the premium Ford Mondeo Vignale. With its chrome finishes, the car radiates luxury. The completely new front of the Ford Mondeo Vignale has a stylish chrome-coloured grille and that eye for detail can again be seen in the specially designed front bumper with chrome ornaments and LED fog lights. Chrome touches are also to be found on the door handles. As a pièce de résistance, the Ford Mondeo Vignale is fitted with unique 18 - or optional 19-inch alloy wheels. Interior details
Inside, the stylised Vignale logo can be found in a number of places. It’s on the dashboard, of course, but also as a detail in the leather seats. Embossed scuff plates and luxury floor mats are other elegant reminders that you are driving in style. Meanwhile, the steering wheel, centre console, door tops and dashboard are all wrapped in high-quality leather. Design Director Chris Bird: “We wanted to give the interior a relaxed, chilled-out vibe. Entering the car should feel like stepping into a very luxurious lounge.” Feel at home
The Ford Mondeo Vignale is equipped with the latest high-end technology to assist you wherever possible. After a keyless entry and keyless ignition, the Ford SYNC 2 with Voice Control and Touchscreen system helps you make and receive phone calls, read text messages and

THE VIGNALE INTERVIEW
Movie star, sex symbol. Family man Movie star Brad Pitt has been voted the sexiest man on earth. In his private life, though, he’s very different – a family man and very dedicated father of six kids. On whether he’s feeling his age
“The knees are gone. The back is a little crunchy. Sure.” On how his life changed after becoming a father
“It’s changed everything. It certainly changed the way I choose films because I’m very aware that our kids are going to see them one day. I’m aware of the impermanence now and that I’ve got a few left and I want to do stories where I can make a difference – not difference in the world, but stories you couldn’t just plug any actor into, where I’ve got something to add. Otherwise why do it? Also with things that they are going to see, where it might mean something to them. I want them to be proud of their dad when they grow up and figure out what we actually do for a living.”

On having six kids in the house

There’s constant chatter in our house, whether it’s giggling or screaming or crying or banging. I love it! I have the concerns a dad has. Is everyone safe? Am I spending enough time with them? These are the things that keep me awake.”

On Angelina’s decision to have preventative surgery
“I’m so proud of her. Very proud. I mean the biggest fear as a father is keeping the family alive and safe and together and she did that for us. I get a bit teary eyed. It’s a huge relief to know that that breast cancer is not the thing that’s going to take her – that it’s not the thing that meant I would have to explain to my kids that they couldn’t see mom again, you know? So it’s big. It’s everything.”
On his father
“My father is a guy who calls to complain when people overcharge him for work on his house. He calls it ‘the celebrity tax.’ They think he makes what I make.” On being labelled a sex symbol

THE YEAR OF TIMELESS ICONS 1964 was the year Martin Luther King, Andy Warhol and The Beatles all became world icons. It also saw the birth of a new sports brand called Nike, whose ‘swoosh’ would gradually acquire iconic status many years later. Unlike the Ford Mustang, which was that rarest of breeds: an instant icon. Fifty years on, the Ford Mustang is finally travelling overseas to share its magnetic personality with a whole new public.
T
he first Ford Mustang ever, the Mustang concept car, was a thing of rare beauty. It was a mid-engined two-seater that, in the autumn of 1962, made it on to pretty well every car magazine’s front cover. The production model, unveiled a year and a half later, looked different – more powerful, even cooler – although the thin body and long nose survived the transition. Dozens of names were considered, from Avanti to Colt and Stiletto to Cheetah. But none worked better than the initial Mustang. The original inspiration came from the famous World War II P51 Mustang fighter plane. 24

surpassed after only three months. One year after its introduction, a staggering 418,812 pony cars had hit the road.
The Ford Mustang had been unleashed and was about to conquer America.
It became clear that Ford’s General Manager, Lee Iacocca, who had come up with the idea of the Mustang, and its Designer, Joe Oros, had created something special. Customers could choose from three models (base, highperformance and luxury) and three body styles (convertible, hard-top and Fastback). The advertising slogan was: ‘Mustang was designed to be designed by you.’
Instant success
With its sporty looks and affordable price of $2,368, the Ford Mustang appealed to the new generation of baby boomers. Confident about its new car, Ford estimated first year sales of 100,000 Mustangs, but that number was
TIMELESS ICONS 1964: ICONIC YEAR As well as the birth of the legendary Ford Mustang, 1964 was a productive year for icons in many other fields.
• Civil rights leader Martin Luther King received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. His ‘I Have a Dream’ speech a year earlier ensured that he will always be the icon of the struggle for racial equality through non-violence.
• Sportswear company Blue Ribbon Sports was co-founded by legendary athletics coach Bill Bowerman in 1964. Blue Ribbon Sports? You might know it better by its current name of Nike.
• By conquering the US on their famous 1964 tour, The Beatles became the ultimate icons of pop music.
• With the release of his 1964 album The Times They Are a-Changin’ Bob Dylan cemented his status as an icon of the 1960s protest generation. Image may not represent final UK specification
TIME and Newsweek both published the brand-new Mustang on their front covers. When the Mustang made its film debut in the Bond movie Goldfinger, the car’s popularity sky-rocketed. After Goldfinger, the Mustang went on to make more than 3,000 movie and TV appearances around the world. However, its show-stealing 10-minute car chase through the streets of San Francisco in the 1968 cult classic Bullit with Steve McQueen at the wheel was perhaps its finest performance and established the Mustang as the ultimate film car.
Five decades, five generations
But it wasn’t just its striking looks that turned the Mustang into an icon. After making its debut in 1964 as the pace car for the Indianapolis 500, it won its first race just a year later. Many more victories followed. Over five decades of the Mustang’s existence, Ford has introduced five generations of the car. The sixth, the brand-new Ford Mustang 2015, will be the first to be sold in Europe.

1964: ICONIC YEAR
• Audrey Hepburn, starring that year in the Oscar-winning My Fair Lady, became an icon of class and style, as perfectly captured by star photographer Richard Avedon, himself an icon of photography.
• In 1964, jazz icon John Coltrane released his masterpiece A Love Supreme. Fifty years on, it is regarded as one of the cultural high points of the 20th century. And terminally cool.
• A 1964 exhibition in New York’s Upper East Side gallery introduced Andy Warhol to a wider public. Himself an icon today, Warhol has created paintings of popular icons such as Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presley, but he also made icons of everyday products like the Campbell’s soup can and the Coca-Cola bottle.
• By defeating Sonny Liston in 1964 as Cassius Clay, the man who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali became heavyweight champion of the world on his way to being perhaps the greatest sporting icon ever. In the pre-fight weigh-in, Clay declared that he would “float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”.
CROSSING THE OCEAN After a 51-year wait, it’s finally here. The new Ford Mustang is ready to rewrite European automotive history.

9.3 Million Mustangs Sold
FACTS OF A PONY • The Ford Mustang has 7.8 million Facebook followers – more than any other car on earth.
• To date, 9.3 million Ford Mustangs have been sold worldwide.
• 37% of Europeans named the Ford Mustang the classic car they would most like to own.
• In 1999, the US Postal Service commemorated the 35th anniversary of the Ford Mustang with its own stamp, which featured the 1964 1/2 Ford Mustang convertible.
• The Ford Mustang was Farrah Fawcett’s ride in the 1970s hit series Charlie’s Angels.
• The first production ford Mustang was presented to the world in 1964 on the roof of New York’s Empire State Building. Last year, the new Ford Mustang made the same photogenic entrance.

ike its iconic predecessors, the new Ford Mustang Fastback and Convertible models have all the classic key design elements: the sleek design, the long sculpted bonnet and the short rear deck. The Mustang’s aviation-inspired cockpit features easy-to-read gauges – the speedometer even shows your ‘ground speed’ – and toggle switches. Doyle Letson, Ford Mustang Interior Design Chief: “We wanted it to feel like you’re sitting in the cockpit of an airplane getting ready for take-off.”
EcoBoost
Selectable Drive Modes
There’s a choice of two engines: a 5.0-litre V8 with 421PS and 524Nm of torque, and a new turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost, which delivers 317PS and 434Nm of torque. Dave Pericak, Ford Mustang Chief Engineer: “This EcoBoost engine delivers where a Ford Mustang driver expects it to deliver – with a broad, flat torque curve that pours out when you stand on it for easy passing or hustling down a twisty road.”
The Ford Mustang features all-new front and rear suspension systems. A new perimeter subframe at the front helps stiffen the structure. At the same time, mass has been reduced. This provides a better foundation for more predictable wheel control. In other words, the handling, steering and ride are world-class. The driver can modify the car’s settings by f licking the toggle switches. Steering effort, Ford Vignale

‘ Like the car itself, this bag makes life easier.’ Ford Designer Erika Tsubaki recently created the Vignale Collection, a line of elegant and ingenious accessories that perfectly match the exclusive character of the Ford Mondeo Vignale. The Weekender Bag, which is part of the collection, has already won one of the world’s most coveted design awards.
Where did the surname Tsubaki originate from?
“I was born in Stuttgart, but my parents are originally from Japan. They grew up near Tokyo. In Japanese ‘tsubaki’ means camellia, the shrub that blossoms in winter.” Were you interested in design even when you were young?
“I used to draw all the time as a kid. Not surprising really, when you consider that my father was an architect and my mother liked to paint. My parents

created a very stimulating environment for me. We had the opportunity to see other countries, visit museums and take all kinds of art classes and courses. For example, my mother played viola and she let me take viola lessons, too.” Do you still play?
“Yes, I’m in the Ford Symphony Orchestra. We perform twice a year in the Cologne Philharmonie and rehearse every week.”

Why did you decide to go to university in Japan after finishing high school in Germany?
“I grew up speaking both languages and it was a nice way to deepen my knowledge of the culture and language of my parents. Initially, I only wanted to go to Japan for a year, but I ended up graduating from Tsukuba University, which is just outside Tokyo. It’s one of the few universities in Japan that has a faculty for art and design and I majored in industrial design there.” How did you get into designing cars?
“Some former classmates of mine, who were working for different Japanese car manufacturers, made some fascinating presentations that showed me the endless possibilities you could have as a car designer. They won me over. At least, that’s what I thought. But recently, my mother gave me a few old Dinky toys. It turns out I used to play with them a lot when I was little – so early on, I was already attracted to cars.” Whose creative work do you admire in particular?
“I like the humour in the work of a designer like Philippe Starck. But Tadao Ando, one of the
most prominent architects in Japan, also fascinates me. He makes totally organic buildings and uses a lot of concrete, water and bamboo. Or take the English sculptor Henry Moore: his massive statues look so transparent.” And what’s the signature design of Erika Tsubaki?
“E.T! Just a joke. I like clean, flowing lines with easy-to-understand forms that immediately make the function clear.” How do you incorporate the core values of the Ford Mondeo Vignale into the Vignale Collection?
“The products in the collection have a premium feel to them – just like the car – while still remaining accessible. These are not just nice gadgets but important building blocks in the world of the Ford Mondeo Vignale. The car makes travel comfortable, agile, almost effortless. The collection fits seamlessly with that. In terms of functionality, feeling and comfort, all the accessories have been designed to save time and make life simpler – not only when you pack before a trip, but also during the journey and when you return home.”
Name a few of the accessories in the Vignale Collection.
“Well, for example, we’ve designed a handbag, a travel bag, a wallet and a protective cover for your mobile phone. But there’s also a silk scarf, a tie, a tray and coffee cups. Each piece is stylish, elegant and made of high-quality materials.” For the Weekender Bag, the collection’s travel bag, you received the IF Design Award last year. Was that a big surprise?
“For me and for Ford! For the first time, Ford won this prestigious prize for a lifestyle product, not for the design of a car or a technical application for cars. The prize is a reward for all the craftspeople who made the bag with so much pride and effort. After all, everything is handmade.” What physical characteristics from the Ford Mondeo Vignale are to be found in the Weekender?
“The side of the bag has a trapezoid form, a key element in the design. If you look closely, you’ll recognise the grille of the car. The light, warm colour combination is directly derived from the car’s interior. The leather seat covers have dark edges, just like the bag. The diamond-formed

stitching on the seats is reflected inside the bag, giving the impression that you’re unpacking a gift from the inside. For the shoulder band, we used the same seat belts that are in the car.” You’re a musician. Do you feel you’ve ‘listened closely’ to the Ford Mondeo Vignale?
“The nice, soft sound as you shut the bonnet of the car gave me the idea to use magnets for closing the side pockets. They make the same kind of sound when they click together, and I was able to work them into the leather so the magnets would be hidden. I didn’t want to have any shiny, cold metal on the outside of the bag – that would
have been too big a contrast with the feeling of warmth that emanates from the exclusive leather. The choice for magnet clasps ended up increasing the functionality enormously. It’s so easy to open and close the side pockets – no fumbling around with zippers or buckles. Due to the shape of the side pockets, the beginning and end of the zipper – the ugliest parts of a handbag –are hidden from view.” Was the design a challenge for the craftspeople?
model. I wanted to cut the material as little as possible. In my view, you create a premium feel when you use high-quality material and then let its value speak for itself by changing the material as little as possible. That’s how you create a pure and consistent effect.” Do you use the bag yourself?
“Every day and I’m not careful about using it at all. Rain, snow – it goes with me everywhere. The Weekender is very sturdy and the leather is easy to care for.”

alencia is one of Spain’s oldest cities and a fun way to explore it is to track its architectural and cultural highlights through the centuries. In the Ciutat Vella (old town) all the sites are within easy walking distance, including the Plaza de la Virgen, location of the original Roman settlement in 138BC, the massive medieval cathedral and the 15th century Silk Exchange, one of Europe’s finest examples of Gothic civil architecture and a World Heritage site. Over the road from the Silk Exchange is the Mercado Central. Europe’s largest freshproduce market is still where the locals get their groceries today. The seemingly endless stalls
piled high with seasonal produce are only half the experience. The building itself is a wonderful example of the Spanish version of 1920s art nouveau. Above you, stained glass and mosaics adorn the dome. Oh, and freshly squeezed orange juice from the tiled bar just outside the market is pretty special, too. Stunning architecture
From the old town, you can cut into the Turia Gardens. This riverbed of the Turia river, diverted after flooding in the 1950s, is now a 9km-long park where locals do their thing, whether that’s walking, jogging, skateboarding, cycling or just hanging out among the trees,
sculptures and water features. It’s not a bad idea to join them by hiring a bike that you can later use to pop down to the beach for a dip and late afternoon siesta. At the end of your stroll through this delightful park for all seasons, you are confronted by Valencia’s present and future in the form of the ultra-modern City of Arts & Sciences – a wonderful interactive science museum, IMAX cinema, planetarium, opera house and Europe’s largest aquarium all rolled into one visually stunning architectural phenomenon.

Where to stay As you might expect, Valencia has beds for all budgets. Here are some winners from across the range. Luxury
Hotel Balneario Las Arenas is a luxury resort hotel on the beachfront. In July and August, the Luxury Candle Massage arrangement includes a 90-minute spa and 80-minute massage, all for a trifling €499 per room per night. www. hotelvalencialasarenas.com Boutique
The rather splendid Caro Hotel blends architectural elements from the Arabic city walls with contemporary design motifs and is ideally located in the heart of the city, a stone’s throw from the main landmarks. www.carohotel.com (Spanish site)
Budget
There are hundreds of budget places but among the best are the Casual Hostel www. casualhotelvalencia.com, a family hotel in a quiet residential area 15 minutes from the centre, and Valencia Mindfulness Retreat, a B&B that delivers on its serious commitment to all-round quality; www.valenciamindfulnessretreat.org.
A day of delights
For something sweet in the afternoon, try the classic local combination of horchata (a creamy, very sweet cold drink) and fartons (finger-shaped buns dusted in sugar). In the evening, which of course starts late in Spain, the La Tassa district has loads of good tapas restaurants. And should you feel like a pick-me-up, they don’t come much stiffer than an agua de Valencia (cava, spirits, sugar and orange juice) in a bar on Plaza del Negrito.
Valencia offers round-the-clock local culinary experiences. Kick-start your day with a Café Bombon, a strong coffee with condensed milk in the bottom that originates from Valencia, at one of the tables in the charming Plaza de la Virgen. Sampling paella is a must and many say that Valencia’s most authentic is to be found in Casa Roberto at 19 Maestro Gozalbo, where lunch for two is pretty affordable. www.casaroberto.es (Spanish site)

Parking without problems
The new Ford Edge is available with a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) that helps you detect vehicles in your blind spot when reversing out of a parking space (or when changing lanes). BLIS uses Cross Traffic Alert to help you detect approaching vehicles while backing up. The new Ford Edge’s 180-degree Front Split View Camera comes to your assistance when pulling out of a parking space with a limited view of crossing traffic and at junctions. Buckle up

injuries: the inflatable rear seatbelt. In everyday use, it works just like a traditional seatbelt, but in emergency situations, it inflates with air across the occupant’s body, which helps to increase the distribution of crash forces across the passenger’s torso by up to five times. This spread of pressure over a larger area decreases the chance of severe injuries. Full-time safety assistance
Driving the new Ford Edge means having extra eyes on the road, as a variety of automated driver-assisting technologies help maximise your road safety. The ground-breaking Ford Active City Stop helps prevent collisions at low speeds and reduce the force of an impact at higher speeds. Sensors in the front of the car continually
scan the road ahead. When an obstacle is detected, the braking system is pre-charged to maximise the driver’s response. If the driver doesn’t respond, the car automatically applies the brakes. Lane Keeping Aid comes into play when the vehicle starts to drift out of lane – at which point the steering wheel vibrates to warn the driver. If the driver doesn’t respond, Lane Keeping Aid steers the vehicle back towards the centre of the lane. Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert uses radar to detect the speed and movement of cars ahead, automatically slowing or accelerating in response to the situation on the road. Handy hands-free

or shopping, Hands-Free tailgate saves the day. A gentle leg motion under the rear bumper and the hatch is unlocked (it has already recognised your key in your pocket or bag) and automatically opens itself. And whether you want to call someone, have a message read to you, operate your audio system or instruct your navigation system, all you have to do is say the word and the revolutionary fully voice-operated Ford SYNC 2 Touchscreen with voice control technology does the rest. Smart key
Ford is ahead of the curve when it comes to encouraging responsible driving, with both its Ford Driving Skills for Life initiative (see page 9) and its technology.
Ford MyKey lets parents program the car key to a restricted driving mode. The use of seatbelts, limitation of top speeds and audio volume can all be set by parents to promote good habits. So even if you’re not driving your kids around, you can still keep a caring eye on them. The sound of silence
Three highly sensitive microphones mounted in the cabin of the Ford Edge detect and measure engine noise. They continuously send signals to the Active Noise Cancellation control, which then generates opposing sound waves directed through the audio system. When the original wave and counter-wave collide, the original wave is silenced.

THE CITY NEVER SLEEPS Dealing with urbanisation is one of the challenges for the coming decades. How will we keep our lives in dense cities enjoyable and healthy? Here are five inspiring global trends that show how we’re already adapting to the changing urban life.

URBAN TRENDS
The sharing economy stay Our car, our parking space, our house, even our kitchenware. We like to share it. Just because it is more cost effective and often more convenient. More importantly: it works both ways. When your house is empty because you’re enjoying your holiday, Airbnb helps you to find a temporary resident to pay part of your rent. On average, 425,000 people around the world use it every night.
While the popularity of Airbnb might in the long term lead to fewer inner-city hotels, a solution that’s already working today to make the city a better place is sharing your parking space. Mobypark, for example, connects – through its app – people looking for a parking space with individuals and companies that offer unused ones. Car sharing is a very useful way to reduce the number of cars in a city centre. As part of its
Smart Mobility philosophy, Ford has rolled out its own programme in Germany. Ford Carsharing is the first manufacturerbacked, nationwide car-sharing programme incorporating dealerships. Already, 39 dealers are participating in 55 cities with more than 100 locations.

Bike it Local governments like to share things with us, too: bikes. Bike-sharing programmes – typically sponsored by major corporations – already exist in more than 165 cities around the world. Launched in leading cities like New York (2013), London (2010), Paris (2007), Barcelona (2007) and Berlin (2003 and 2009) have shown it to be very successful. The idea originates from Amsterdam and as long ago as 1969, when a fleet of bikes was painted white and distributed across the city. But biking will not take off if there are no safe biking lanes. New York is constructing an extended cycle path all around the borders of Manhattan. Several streets across the crowded island already have separate lanes for bikers. Biking may be the best answer to stop city streets getting clogged up and very helpful in reducing air pollution. Ford recently expanded its global Ford Smart Mobility plan with a new experiment to study how electric bicycles can work seamlessly with cars and public transport to deliver faster and easier daily commutes and help businesses operating in urban centres.

Keep it local Although the production of meat – livestock represent 18% of all greenhouse gas emissions – is a bigger climate offender than its transport, every mile matters. The local production of food – from farm to fork – is getting increasingly popular, helped as well by several food scandals. Around the globe, urban farming initiatives are popping up like biological mushrooms. In Chicago, in the former meat-packing district, The Plant has been up and running since 2010. This vertical urban farm produces mushrooms, is a fish hatchery and brews its own beer – all in a self-sustained eco system. The Urban Physic Garden (2011) in London is a community garden run by volunteers featuring a host of exotic medicinal plants and seeds. At the other side of the world, in Osaka, Japan, an urban farm has been built on the roof of the busy train station. This ‘Farm in the sky’ educates visitors about organic farming and grows flowers, plants and vegetables.
Be your own manufacturer 3D printing has been with us since the 1980s. The breakthrough will come when 3D printing becomes available for use at home at a low price. Instead of ordering a product in a webshop and waiting for it to ship, we will just print out that product. It will mean a big reduction in the number of suppliers coming into city centres to deliver consumer goods. Your new jeans or haute couture are just manufactured at home. 3D printing becomes beyond fascinating when it can be used for medical purposes as well. Research is being done on printing nano-medicine, pharmaceuticals and even printing organs, veins and arteries to be used in operations.
A house within 24 hours Rome wasn’t built in one day. But it could have been if Dutch construction company Heijmans had been around. Its new concept home is called ONE and it’s a spacious, prefabricated house for singles that can be set up in one day. Although it isn’t a very cheap solution right now, the idea of constructing a house within 24 hours, including a kitchen, bathroom, living room, bedroom and a patio, may in the future help solve housing problems in fast expanding cities. The first 30 ONEs will be launched in the Netherlands in the second half of 2015.

TIME IS ON YOUR SIDE If fashionably late doesn’t really work for you, here are some nifty time-saving ideas for getting about Europe with less hassle and more style this summer. Shared parking with a difference Getting to a city is one thing. Finding a place to park anywhere near where you need to be is quite another. But a brilliant new idea is changing all that. Like most brilliant ideas, it’s simple: the JustPark app lets you hire a local person’s parking space from them while they’re not using it (or rent out your own for a little extra holiday cash). It’s London-based but expanding rapidly. And for help finding old-school parking, the German-based app Parkopedia gives you your best parking options from millions of spaces across 52 countries worldwide.

Summer’s a beach
Anyone who’s tried getting about Europe’s larger cities knows you can waste a lot of time trying to negotiate their transport systems. Of the many apps designed to ensure you spend more time seeing the sights and less time searching for them, we regard Citymapper as one of the best. It tells you how to use buses, trains, metros, taxis, bikes, teleportation, jetpacks and catapults to get to your destination most efficiently. The everexpanding offering includes Berlin, Rome, London, Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, Milan, Manchester and Hamburg.
Looking for the taste of summer, but know the same old beach holiday isn’t going to do it for you? Time to head to Croatia, where you’ll find at least five beach festivals this summer – from the leading electronics Hideout Festival on the lovely island of Pag to the friendly, familyorientated Garden Festival some 120km down the coast in the small municipality of Tisno.

So little time… The city break: great idea, difficult to perfect. Getting the most out of 48 hours in an unfamiliar city really is easier said than done. So any app that lets you hit the ground running
Tip: To drive one of Europe’s most breathtaking coastal roads, get to the festivals using the beautiful Adriatic coastal road and then carry on down to Split and Dubrovnik.
is worth its weight in gold. TripAdvisor City Guides is especially useful because it also works offline (for example, underground) and even has maps where you can pinpoint your location without using 3G/4G data. Handy if you want to avoid any scary roaming charges.

Life in the slow lane
Let’s face it: flying has never really been what it used to be. But when the trip is just that bit too far to take the car, a decent air travel app can soften the blow. GateGuru is one of the best. This free app provides real-time flight status, relevant push updates and airport info throughout your whole journey, including stopovers. Hopefully, it will ensure that the old
Summer also calls for those moments when you get out of the fast lane, cruise up a winding country road, pull over at that idyllic spot, open the hamper of goodies, lie back and… unwind. Creating the perfect picnic is an art worth learning. But at seriouseats.com you get tips not on what food to take (you already know

airline mantra ‘Have a pleasant flight’ doesn’t begin to sound like a cruel joke.
Going underground To help you deal with Europe’s biggest metropolis, London’s First off the Tube app goes one better than ordinary route planners. It tells you exactly where you should stand on each platform during your journey on the Underground to minimise the time you spend queuing and walking between trains. Observe with wry amusement from your half-empty carriage as the tourists cram through the closing doors of the next carriage down.

Better safe… It’s not what you want to think about on holiday but the fact is that, like most things in life, travel does involve risks. But happily, and also like most things, a sensible approach goes a long way to eliminating those risks and, just as important, putting you in control. So maybe it makes sense to download the Safety Map Worldwide app, which offers advice on safe routes through towns and the high-crime areas to avoid, based on public data and user feedback. Meanwhile, the simple but effective! Emergency! lists the number for each emergency service in every country in the world. Let’s hope you never need to use it.
What do you fancy? After a long day on the road, you’ve reached your stopover destination. It’s early evening and you’ll soon be hungry. Traditional guidebooks are fine up to a point, but what if you don’t share the authors’ preferences? Foursquare has become so popular because it gets to know your personal tastes. You tell it exactly the things you like, and it finds the local restaurants and bars that hit the spot for you.

A large community ensures that user review tips remain up to date about where to go – and avoid.
The road less travelled A satnav can get you from A to B, but it doesn’t have a driver’s soul. Which is why researchers Daniele Quercia and Luca Maria Aiello from Yahoo! and Torino University’s Rossano Schifanella have been working on a map app that uses algorithms to take account of people’s emotional response to roads. So you can drive not just the shortest or cheapest route but also the most inspiring.
But until that’s available, before hitting the road this summer why not get some inspiration from websites such as Wonderslist and Twistedsifter.com, which give their bucket lists of Europe and the world’s most amazing scenic routes? From France’s Route Napoleon (exactly 200 years after the man himself pioneered it) to the Troll’s Route in Norway and Ireland’s Ring of Kerry. Tarmac to dream about when you’re next stuck in the queue for the supermarket car park. www.wonderslist.com/10-most-scenic-drives-in-europe www.twistedsifter.com/2013/03/ roads-to-drive-before-you-die
