ABOUT COPENHAGEN HOST PROGRAM

WHO CAN JOIN THE PROGRAM?

People come to Copenhagen from all over the world for many different reasons. For many newcomers like yourself, it can be a challenge to learn the language, know your community and get a network that can lead to friendship, job or education.

All newcomers who have been in Denmark for less than three years can take part in the program. You must also reside in Copenhagen.

Copenhagen Host Program work together with the organisations “Foreningen Nydansker” and “Danish Refugee Council”, to match you with a volunteer host. Meeting with a volunteer host will enable mutual learning between fellow citizens and help you get a good start on life in Copenhagen.

WHY GET A HOST? Copenhagen Host Program will in co-operation with “Danish Refugee Council” and “Foreningen Nydansker” match you with a compatible host. A host from “Foreningen Nydansker” will mainly focus on helping you with education or the job market, by e.g. helping you with job applications, learning Danish by profession or giving you information about the Danish education system and job market. A host from “Danish Refugee Council” will focus on social activities with you, practicing Danish conversation and giving you information about your local community and culture- and association activities in Copenhagen. It is up to you to decide if you would like a host from “Foreningen Nydansker” or from “Danish Refugee Council”. Your host can not give you a job, a place to live, or money. Host volunteers can help you learn about your new community. They do not replace the work that professionals can do for you.

The Host Program is free of cost for participants.

TIME AND EFFORT? If you would like to be matched with a host you should be able to commit to getting together 1-2 times every month during half a year. The coordinator of the Host Program will help you with inspiration for activities and will follow up on the match during the 6 months. People from Copenhagen who volunteer for the Host Program enjoy making new acquaintances and learning about the culture and experiences of newcomers. They understand that everyone in Denmark will benefit when new immigrants feel welcomed and get some friendly help during the early settlement period.
