Goodwill, Serving the People of Southern Los Angeles County 2008 Annual Report to the Community www.thinkgood.org
Dear Friends, What a difference a year makes! In the past year, we have witnessed financial crisis and collapse - from Wall Street to London and beyond; record-setting performances in the Olympics; the up and down pricing of crude oil; and the sometimes use of the word “depression” to describe our economic situation. For your Goodwill, 2008 was a year that demanded rigorous focus on balancing costs, impact and community needs. Often, the temptation was to “hunker down” with seemingly safe strategies. The reality is that our constituent needs burgeon in such times. Those needs, combined with Goodwill SOLAC’s commitment to long-term growth, required that we exercise even more creativity, planning, and investment, staying the course with a steadfast belief that “Doing Good Creates a Lot of Hope.” As unemployment rates reached heights not seen in decades, we responded by expanding our Workforce Development efforts: increasing “Positive Recruitment” job fairs, specific to local business requests; expanding several of our training programs; and opening our computer training lab to the community. Project M.O.V.E., our customer service training, added another class; Home Health Aide certification was layered into our Allied Healthcare (CNA) training program; and three new work training sites were added at two of our retail stores and within our centralized processing area. In total, we provided workplace education, skills training, work experience and/or job placement services to more than 6,000 individuals with disabilities or other vocational disadvantages, which is a 40% increase over the prior year. We expanded our retail operations, employment and work training opportunities in the City of Cerritos, with the addition of a new store. With this new addition, Goodwill now has 17 retail locations, with planning underway to open additional sites and relocate a few of our existing sites. LiNKS, our Sign Language and Interpreting services, expanded its service coverage by 51%, providing the ability for nearly 3,000 individuals to participate fully in a hearing society. As we move into 2009, our newest social enterprise, Shred4-Good, document destruction, will provide additional employment opportunities, expand our recycling efforts, fulfill the needs of business compliance, and prevent identity theft in our community. While the needs are greater than ever, so is Goodwill’s impact. Our work is only possible because of the dedication of our staff, donors and shoppers; the input and support of community businesses, community leaders, foundations, and government institutions; and the leadership of our Board of Trustees. We have been Doing Good and Creating a Lot of Hope for the past 79 years, and nothing, including a recession, will change that, thanks to the tremendous support we receive from YOU.

Gloria Compean, Graduate Staff of the Year Gloria works on Goodwill SOLAC’s Contract Custodial Services Team, which cleans and maintains the agency’s facilities, and for local businesses and city agencies. Because of her work ethic and performance, she soon received a promotion and is a key employee who rotates between the agency’s contract with the Metropolitan Transit Authority and the City of Carson (maintaining the city’s more than 100 bus stops). Gloria, who is a graduate of Goodwill SOLAC’s Customer Service Training Program (Project M.O.V.E.), credits the program with giving her a sense of purpose. “The program was a lifeline for me. It renewed my spirit,” says Gloria. “This job has helped me to heal and look toward the future.” Before she enrolled in Project M.O.V.E. nearly two years ago, she had reached ground zero. Domestic issues that ended her marriage and a lot of “bad choices” led her to a sober living house in San Pedro. She completed the customer service and life skills instruction and her internship with Custodial Services, which also had a job opening. Based on her performance she was offered the job. “Goodwill accepted me. They looked beyond my background and gave me a chance to support myself and begin a new start. I have my own apartment, pay my own rent, I feel more assertive and I can take care of myself. I have come a long way.”
