YOUTHFUL FUMA GRABS TOP TEN FINISH The course at Woodberry Forest is as much an opponent as the competing runners. It is not a course that rewards inexperience either. So with two eighth graders in the top five, the task at hand for FUMA was daunting. Alex Lomong became the first runner since Josh Morris to reach the podium with a second place finish. Brother Peter capped off a solid season with a tenth place performance to earn his second All-State honor in Cross Country. For Alex and Peter, this makes the fourth athletic season in a row that they have earned All—State honors. Eighth– grader Julian Yescas completed his first tour of the State course with an outstanding 50th place performance . Just eight spots back was junior Darvy Soignet. Eighth—grader Scott Boyd dropped an incredible 2:22 from his previous race at Woodberry to finish out a tenth place team finish for FUMA. With two juniors, two eighth graders and a sophomore the outlook for 2014 is optimistic.

LOMONG FIRST CHAMP SINCE 2009 TEAM FINISHES THIRD A somewhat confusing course at Collegiate School’s Goochland campus greeted the Prep League runners for the 2013 Championship. The tricky course turned out to work to the advantage of the Lomong brothers. Basically, the 3.1 mile race was turned into a tactical slow paced race for two miles and a mad dash to the finish on the last mile. Fewer than ten seconds separated the top five finishers with FUMA’s Alex Lomong holding off Trinity’s Jamie Heigel for the individual title. Peter Lomong was barely out leaned by Woodberry’s Robert Singleton for third. While Woodberry Forest and Trinity battled for the team title, two low scores up front set the stage for FUMA to knock off Saint Christopher’s and Collegiate for third place. For the FUMA harriers it marked a drastic turnaround. The Blue Devils were dead last at the Fork Union Invitational to start the season and were beaten by Saint Chris just two weeks prior to the Prep League meet.
