THE CHAMPIONS
AMAZING YEAR ENDS WITH SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE 195 POINTS - 11 CHAMPIONS Most meets have a few highlights, a few performances that standout from the rest. The 2012 VISAA had seemingly endless highlights. An incredible run came to an end for Fork Union on Saturday as the Blue Devils closed out the 2012 Track season with a performance for the ages. Thirty-one participated and twenty-two scored as FUMA put together a total team performance. On form FUMA figured to score as many as 170 but on Saturday the Blue Devils took it to another level in winning a 23rd title in 25 years with 195 points. The day started with a surprise to all as FUMA had three long jumpers score. Dondre Wright launched a 20’10 jump, his best of the year by seven inches. DJ Randle El and Arnel Combs also added great performances with jumps over twenty feet. Meanwhile at the high jump Alex Daubon and Tyron McDade finished third and fourth respectively losing only on fewer misses. Charlton Larkins closed out a dominating year by holding off teammate Matt Desaulnier for the shot put title. For Desaulnier, the final throw of 49’5 put the final year long improvement at a whopping twelve feet. With three field events in the books the running finals began with a bang as underclassmen Peter and Alex Lomong teamed up with Russ Garver and Piotr Wojenski to claim second in the 4x800 in an incredible 8:08. The 110 hurdle final saw Clyde Gross gap the competition with a 14.7. Also in on the hurdle final was an exhausted Tyron McDade who overcame illness to score. The 100 meter dash was up next and Denver Wright proceeded to destroy the field with a lifetime best of 10.90. With the day now half over the highlights did not stop. Avery Martin won the 1600 in 4:16 over teammate Michael Idziak (4:22). The 4x100 closed out a winner with a sizzling 42.39. The field events ended with three more FUMA victories as seniors Obi Okeyo (46’8 triple jump), Staton Mayfield (14’6 pole vault) and Jordan Roach (182’10 discus) won their specialties. Anton Bartsevich ran a lifetime best in the 400 to score. Clyde Gross finished his season in style by winning the 300 hurdles and teammate Denver Wright became the first Blue Devil since 2003 to win the 100/200 sprint double. Wright’s performance in the 200 was remarkable considering it was his fifth race of the day and his time was a full .5 faster than his previous best. Also in the 200 was senior DJ Randle El who finished his track career with back to back personal bests. The 800 was a FUMA classic as Idziak and Martin worked together to claim 1-2 in the 800 with Michael defending his title at 1:54. The day ended with freshmen Peter Lomong placing in the 3200 and the 4x400 earning third place. Though FUMA will lose numerous outstanding performers the returning team has much to look forward to next year. But for now let’s just soak this one up!
