THE CHAMPIONS

AMAZING YEAR ENDS WITH SPECTACULAR PERFORMANCE 195 POINTS - 11 CHAMPIONS Most meets have a few highlights, a few performances that standout from the rest. The 2012 VISAA had seemingly endless highlights. An incredible run came to an end for Fork Union on Saturday as the Blue Devils closed out the 2012 Track season with a performance for the ages. Thirty-one participated and twenty-two scored as FUMA put together a total team performance. On form FUMA figured to score as many as 170 but on Saturday the Blue Devils took it to another level in winning a 23rd title in 25 years with 195 points. The day started with a surprise to all as FUMA had three long jumpers score. Dondre Wright launched a 20’10 jump, his best of the year by seven inches. DJ Randle El and Arnel Combs also added great performances with jumps over twenty feet. Meanwhile at the high jump Alex Daubon and Tyron McDade finished third and fourth respectively losing only on fewer misses. Charlton Larkins closed out a dominating year by holding off teammate Matt Desaulnier for the shot put title. For Desaulnier, the final throw of 49’5 put the final year long improvement at a whopping twelve feet. With three field events in the books the running finals began with a bang as underclassmen Peter and Alex Lomong teamed up with Russ Garver and Piotr Wojenski to claim second in the 4x800 in an incredible 8:08. The 110 hurdle final saw Clyde Gross gap the competition with a 14.7. Also in on the hurdle final was an exhausted Tyron McDade who overcame illness to score. The 100 meter dash was up next and Denver Wright proceeded to destroy the field with a lifetime best of 10.90. With the day now half over the highlights did not stop. Avery Martin won the 1600 in 4:16 over teammate Michael Idziak (4:22). The 4x100 closed out a winner with a sizzling 42.39. The field events ended with three more FUMA victories as seniors Obi Okeyo (46’8 triple jump), Staton Mayfield (14’6 pole vault) and Jordan Roach (182’10 discus) won their specialties. Anton Bartsevich ran a lifetime best in the 400 to score. Clyde Gross finished his season in style by winning the 300 hurdles and teammate Denver Wright became the first Blue Devil since 2003 to win the 100/200 sprint double. Wright’s performance in the 200 was remarkable considering it was his fifth race of the day and his time was a full .5 faster than his previous best. Also in the 200 was senior DJ Randle El who finished his track career with back to back personal bests. The 800 was a FUMA classic as Idziak and Martin worked together to claim 1-2 in the 800 with Michael defending his title at 1:54. The day ended with freshmen Peter Lomong placing in the 3200 and the 4x400 earning third place. Though FUMA will lose numerous outstanding performers the returning team has much to look forward to next year. But for now let’s just soak this one up!

FUMA DEFENDS VPL TITLE 4X400 RUNS 3:22.88 ROACH BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD WRIGHT BREAKS 11 IN 100 GROSS & MARTIN DOMINATE While most of their classmates found their way home for Mother’s Day weekend, the track team took care of business. Though they may have sacrificed a few hours of leave weekend, they will carry the title of champions forever—not a bad deal. A hot sticky day welcomed the Blue Devils to Saint Christopher’s as well as a talented, determined Woodberry Forest team. Though FUMA had eleven champions on the day the Tigers put up considerable opposition with three champions and good depth. The final outcome was a 33 point victory and a third title in a row for FUMA. The weather conditions made for fast times as FUMA got season’s bests in the 110hh, 100, 1600, 400, 4x400 and shot put. The shocker of the meet came in the high jump where 8th grader Alex Daubon claimed the title with a jump of 6’2. Denver Wright took the 100 meter dash title and Clyde Gross won the high hurdles and 200. Wright and Gross were also part of a winning 4x100. Avery Martin was tremendous in the 1600 breaking 4:20 for the first time with a 4:17 clocking. Charlton Larkins broke the 50 foot mark in the shot put to claim the title. Larkins has been incredibly consistent all year. The meet ended with FUMA knocking off Woodberry Forest in the 4x400 with a near school record 3:22.88. One meet to go, one more trip to Saint Christopher’s.

IDZIAK AND MARTIN RUN 1:53 FUMA WINS 5TH INVITATIONAL OF SEASON FUMA traveled four miles for the final Invitational of the season and the Blue Devils defended their backyard well. Just one week out from the Championship meets, the line-up gave many of the top performers a chance to concentrate on just one event. The strategy paid off as several top marks were turned in. The highlight of the night was the 800 where seniors Michael Idziak and Avery Martin let it all hang out. Teammate Piotr Wojenski carried the two through 400 at 54.5 and then the race began. Martin made a big move on the back stretch but Idziak had a little more in the tank down the home stretch. Both athletes recorded personal bests in the 1:53’s. For Idziak, the performance is a good springboard into the European season. For Martin, the performance now puts his improvement at FUMA in the event in excess of 12 seconds. Other highlights in the meet included Peter Lomong and Russ Garver in the 1600. Garver came in having never broken five minutes. When the race was over his new personal best was 4:36. Peter Lomong also finished at 4:36 just a few tenths of a second ahead of Garver. Lomong returned later in the meet in the 3200 where he scored another personal best. The 4x100 held on to beat Woodberry by .03 setting up a dramatic final two weeks. Also picking up impressive performances were hurdlers Clyde Gross and Tyron McDade, the tandem went 1-2 in the high hurdles. The field events continued to be a FUMA stronghold as FUMA got wins from Staton Mayfield, Obi Okeyo and Jordan Roach.
