Woven Together + Mara, Jinbi, Ngurra FORM Gallery

FORM acknowledges the Traditional Owners and Custodians throughout Western Australia both past and present, whose enduring connection to this Country and ongoing contributions to our collective culture and communities we respect and honour. We appreciate and are deeply grateful for the privilege of working on these lands.

This exhibition is proud to be a part of the IOTA24 Festival, supported by Lotterywest.

Woven Together

Spinifex Hill Studio with Jacky Cheng, Paula do Prado and the South Hedland Community

Over recent years the artists of Spinifex Hill Studio (South Hedland) have been experimenting with weaving and other textile techniques, alongside their painting practices. Several of the artists use traditional basketry skills to create practical and decorative objects or knit and crochet at home. The Woven Together project was established in 2022 to provide creative inspiration to these artists as they advanced in this new medium, via exchange with Australian and international mentors who employ weaving and textiles in innovative ways. Woven Together showcases the project’s outcomes alongside solo works by two of the project mentors, Jacky Cheng (Broome) and Paula do Prado (Sydney).

The artist mentors use repurposed and recycled materials and techniques that have a low impact on the environment. Their practices also embrace collaboration, creative exchange and social engagement. The resulting experimental woven works presented here have been developed in collaboration with the Studio’s artists, and residents of South Hedland and nearby remote Aboriginal communities. Complementing these installations is a selection of canvases by the Spinifex Hill Studio artists that draw inspiration from weaving technique and the colour palette of the textile works.

Intervowen Remnants #2
Jacky Cheng, 2024

“My Spinifex Hill Studio residency had a focused intention: to help reduce waste being sent to landfill via re-purposing for a collaborative weaving outcome. Interwoven Remnants seeks to inspire collaboration, connection and exploration through reciprocal dialogue concerning resources, discarded materials, and strategies on creative reuse in the studio and in the community. Inspired by László Moholy-Nagy’s approach in Vision in Motion (1947), I have capitalised his utopian philosophy regarding art’s capacity to initiate positive change in a productive way, putting forth, emphasising and focusing on a single material aesthetic.

Any successful art studio will discard materials, such as the random and irregular canvases offcuts used in this work. We stripped each into a long narrow piece, then folded and stitched them to hold a single zig zag pattern, with pairs of strips plaited together to create an intertwining weave. The fusion of the woven pieces and the ritual actions of repetitive movements and patterns gave life force and authority to this experimental work.

During my residency, the artists and I exchanged stories of family, cultural celebrations, intergenerational relationships among community members, and the need for a safe and supported environment in which to create. I shared similar sentiments about how I forged a sense of community in my new-found home of Broome.

Living and practising in a multicultural community is special. The motivation is different: it is respectful and demands sensitive storytelling. Culture comes from place, and the Kimberley and Pilbara have such rich and diverse narratives that grow from strong family connections. I continue to learn more about the resilience, stability and diversity of relationships in the South Hedland community, and that interdependence is channelled through this collaborative work.”

“Sky is mirror. The constellations, the visible and invisible parts of the cosmos underpin the connections between ancient cultures and practices. There’s nothing quite like flying into Kariyarra Country, especially as the sun is setting. Pink, orange, purple, gold bands dance on the horizon and eventually a blanket of stars covers the big sky. My paternal grandfather taught me about the stars and told me stories about how he learned to navigate his way in the night. I take his stories with me everywhere and I have come to understand they were not just stories about navigating place so you wouldn’t get lost, but they were also stories about navigating relationships.

“I have had the opportunity to visit Spinifex Hill Studio twice, spending time with the artists and staff, and share my weaving practice. Weaving is and has always been about a lot more than the technical ‘how to’ of making something. Weaving is a space, a language and a way of relating. The works in this installation represent moments shared and stories exchanged over cups of tea, laughter, impromptu song and all the emotions that can come up from remembering a way of doing. Weaving wakes up the hands and wakes up the heart.”

Yinjaa-Barni Art with Sandra Black

“As children we used to play in the clay and cover ourselves in it. Now we paint our Country on the clay.”

ALLERY SANDY, YINJAA-BARNI ART

(2024)

Since 2022 the artists of Yinjaa-Barni Art have been working with Western Australian ceramicist Sandra Black on a body of works transferring their wellhoned painting skills onto ceramic forms. Mara, Jinbi, Ngurra (Hands, Clay, Country) showcases some of the outcomes of this creative exploration.

In Roebourne and in her Fremantle studio, Black has mentored the artists in numerous ceramic techniques including hand building, slip casting, marbling, sgraffito, ceramic painting and decal decoration. Mara, Jinbi, Ngurra includes solo and collaborative works that reflect the artists’ highly regarded facility with colour and pattern. In May 2024 the artists took Black to Yindjibarndi Country to visit important cultural sites and draw inspiration from the West Pilbara landscape. This field trip informed a body of solo works by Black, shown here alongside the Yinjaa-Barni artists’ works.

“It’s been an enormous privilege to meet and work with the wonderful Yinjaa-Barni artists in Roebourne over the past three years. To introduce a new medium of clay to a group of traditional painters has been personally challenging, exciting, and rewarding, and an exciting new body of work has resulted from the transfer of their painting skills on to clay vessels that we have made individually and together.

“From my own perspective I have been drawn into the beautiful Pilbara landscape with its extraordinary colours, rock formations and flora. In this body of work, I have tried to express some of the colour and forms of the landscape along with plant life, using coloured porcelain slips, the inclusion of Pilbara soils and photo decal images taken during my time in the region.”

FORM is an independent, not-for-profit arts and cultural organisation based in Claremont and operating across Western Australia. Our mission is to be a leader in the development of a vibrant creative economy for the benefit and wellbeing of all Western Australian communities.

FORM’s vision is to be a major contributor in ensuring Western Australia is a vibrant, thriving, and connected participant in a global creative economy, and that our work is world-renowned for its ability to catalyse unique cultural expression, arising from our State’s healthy and prosperous communities. Our vision is realised through our values: creativity, excellence, integrity, community empowerment and collaboration.

Our unique programs include FORM Gallery & Café, Spinifex Hill Studio, FORM Creative Learning - Creative Schools and Scribblers, major Cultural Tourism projects such as Thomas Dambo’s Giants of Mandurah and the PUBLIC Silo Trail, plus Arts and Cultural Consultancy.

Spinifex Hill Studio

Spinifex Hill Studio stands on Kariyarra Country in South Hedland, in the remote Pilbara region of north west Western Australia. Founded in 2008 through a partnership between a small group of local artists and community members and nonprofit organisation FORM, today the Studio works with over 100 artists from many different language groups, presenting contemporary art which covers a breadth of styles. The Studio moved into its custom-built premises in South Hedland in 2014, and in July 2021 expanded to include the Spinifex Hill Project Space which presents a year-round program of events for the Hedland community.

Yinjaa-Barni Art

Yinjaa-Barni Art is a collective of Aboriginal artists who predominantly belong to the Yindjibarndi language group, and whose ancestral homelands surround the Fortescue River and Millstream Tablelands in Western Australia’s remote Pilbara region. Based in nearby Roebourne , the Yinjaa-Barni artists create deeply personal works of collective memory, rendering the wildflowers, river systems and landforms of their Country onto canvas. The art centre is a not-for-profit Aboriginal Corporation governed by an Aboriginal board of directors and run by an executive manager. Yinjaa-barni is Yindjibarndi for ‘staying together’.
