afety on the road is important to every one. Now, drivers in Queensland can be more at ease thanks to the completion of critical upgrades to the Bruce Highway at Back Creek Range, approximately 24 kilometres north of Gin Gin.
A high-priority project The high-priority, $50 million dollar project was undertaken by the Australian Government in partnership with the Queensland Government in November 2012 to correct hazardous road conditions on the highway – including the realignment of a hilly and curving 3.7 kilometre section of the road, home to a spot notoriously known as the Big Dipper.
The “Big Dipper” before the works started vehicle stopping areas for northbound and southbound drivers suffering fatigue, as well as upgrades to intersections and improved property access.
According to a statement by Warren Truss, Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, ‘The old alignment with its tight curves had a bad crash history. It was particularly troublesome for heavy vehicles, especially in wet weather. That is why the Australian Government made this project a priority.’
A big undertaking, big upgrades In addition to straightening the highway at Back Creek Range, improvements also included the addition of a southbound overtaking lane and heavy

traffic flow. The new alignment is especially good news for heavy vehicles, which have historically been the most at risk. The speed limit in the area is now safe up to 100 kilometres per hour, eliminating the need for the speed reduction and warning signs that used to dot this section of highway in the past. The construction of the Bruce Highway at Back Creek Range was awarded to Seymour Whyte Constructions with a $24 million dollar contract. Partnering with Form Direct to help determine their exact needs, Form Direct was able to provide fast and flexible solutions to enable the project to be completed on time and within budget – paving the way for greater driver safety now and in the future.
