Due to our history, Boden offers extraordinary conditions with abundance of renewable electric power, attractive land and suitable facilities. It all started during the late 17th century with a poor farmer, Per Andersson, from the north part of the municipality. During a harsh winter one of his children starved to death and he left his family for the Lappish wilderness. His goal was to trade flour for reindeers. In the small settlement Illuvare he met a Sami guy that traded his goods and left him a couple of stones that he brought home. He gave them to the authorities and almost 50 years later his sons were honored for their father’s discovery – the iron ore of Malmberget. This ore has the highest density in the world and are still used to produce world class high carbon steel around the world. Due to the development of the orefield, the railway through Sweden and between Luleå and Narvik was built, in the beginning of 20th century. In March 1888 the first ore train arrived to Lulea from Malmberget. The train which was carrying 1,000 tons of iron ore was the start

Consider that, we still got it to work, and since that day Swedish Lapland daily have been mining and transporting iron ore and produced and transported steel in more extreme weather than that. Boden became the hub of logistics of the railway. The Swedish Steele company (SSAB), the hydropower development and the military defense strategies were all built up around this huge natural asset. To protect it, Boden fortress was built during the beginning of 20th century. During the 1990s, the global political scene changed and the military strategy with it. Instead of a military defense built for handling the in-between position of the cold war Sweden became an international partner to the United nation and other global interventions. The infrastructure of power, communications and suitable facilities has been transferred into civilian use with completely different goals and visions. Today Boden can offer extra ordinary conditions for data centers.

Unique stability and abundance of power Boden has a unique position of power supply – redundant, sustainable and free from interruption. Just outside of Boden is one of the national power grid substations, and one of the points where Swedens national grid connects to the Nordic grid. The national grid substation is located just 6 km from the Helicopter Airbase Area. Numerous feeders of the regional grid passes close to the site. Luleå River produces annually approximately 4300 MW where approximately 2600 MW is exported from the region. This creates an unique abundance of power. The power supply offers great sustainability through the 100% renewable hydro power. During the last 10 years the regional grid of Norrbotten has had 2 interruptions – with a total length of 9 hours and 9 minutes. No interferences for customers were noted. The Regional Power grid has 99.99% uptime on each feeder. Our new +200MW substation on the Helicopter Airbase site add another dimension to power relience. The calculated risk of lost feed of power is almost nonexistent. Alternative back-up power up to 10MW could be generated from locally produced biogas. External back-up power supply through generators may not be necessary.

Multiple options – Boden is located along the backbones of TeliaSonera and other major operators. TeliaSonera International Carrier, Europes leading Tier1 fiber supplier, offers redundant dark fiber through two connection points close to both Helicopter Airbase and Boden Business Park. TeliaSonera International Carrier is currently expanding their connectivity with a new nation-wide backbone dark fiber with turning point at the Boden data center sites. The local fiber supplier Bodens Energi are connecting all sites redundant towards existing termination points. All major suppliers are able to take part of their local backbone through the existing termination points.

Effective cooling by water

The region offers large amount of natural cooling possibilities - thanks to the cold climate and the cold water of Lule책 river. The areas have well-developed water- and sewer systems that can be customized due to customer demands. All sites in Boden are connected to the municipality owned water and sewer system. It is possible to get industry cooling water from the Lule책 river; up to 200 liter/second at the Helicopter Airbase area. The river offers effective cooling with an average annual temperature of 6.2 oC (43.1 oF).

Perfect climate for big data Boden is situated in the center of Swedish Lapland, only 60 km south of the Arctic Circle. Boden is a part of the Node Pole; one of the most geologically, politically and socially stable areas in the world. Swedish Lapland is known for its cold climate and vast natural resources. GREEN BUSINESSES Boden Municipality has been actively working with eco and sustainability for 20 years which is noticable in the commercial and industrial life of Boden. The eco interest are huge and it’s constantly growing; new businesses are establishing and cooperations are getting more and more common. For an example; today there are 16 businesses which have eco technology as their primary source of income. RESEARCH FOR INNOVATIONS Boden Municipality has a close cooperation with Luleå University of Technology, especially research groups in waste technology and energy. The R&D has studied biogas technology, recycling of nutrients and construction materials, and the use of additives in waste fuels. The waste technology programme at Luleå University of Technology contributes to research in all parts of society’s waste management; formation, collection, treatment and disposal of waste, including utilization and recycling. The research aims to develop tools and methods for sustainable waste management.

URBAN MINING - REFINING THE WASTE Boden work with Urban Mining since 1995. Wich means that raw materials are extracted from waste. Citizens of Boden sorts their waste, but instead of ending up at the dump, a circular economy around the waste has been built up. It means reusing and recycling waste whenever possible. Instead of throwing fully functioning gadgets, they are sold second-hand and recycled. By sorting packaging paper, glass, plastic and metal; instead of being thrown on the dump, gets new life. Burnable garbage is burned and turned into power and heat to households and industries food waste along with what is flushed down the toilet becomes biogas that powers vehicles and datacenters. The biogas production also creates a biproduct used as a bio-fertilizer in agriculture. Working with Urban Mining takes care of all waste, which does good for the ecology at the same time as it creates new business opportunities and jobs.

The general preschool is free of charge and is integrated into preschool from the autumn term the year the child turns 3. As a parent in Boden, there is the option to choose between municipally or privately provided preschools. They offer childcare weekdays 06:00 to 18:30. PRIMARY EDUCATION is compulsory from grade 1-9. Children start first grade at age 7. Before the elementary school, most 6-year-olds takes a preparatory school year. SECONDARY SCHOOL is optional, but most youths still choose to continue their studies. Secondary school is free, just as elementary school. The secondary school in Boden, offers most standard programs, but is particularly known for its enriching music education. Since 2014 they also offers technical college, which is a certified education that brings the students a high quality technical education, where the business and the industries are a part of the leadership and development of the education, which grants up-to-date knowledge and high employability. Communications and logistics With excellent transport links and a central location in Norrbotten, Boden is an important hub in the county. It’s easy to live here because you always have close to work, schools, leisure activities, health care and travels.

Boden is especially known as a railway hub, here the iron ore line meets the north main line. Travelers reach all over Sweden by train from Boden. It is easy to travel by bus, both regionally and locally. Buses runs frequently and the people are especially proud of the eco friendly local transports using the locally produced biogas. Luleå airport is only 45 minutes away. Luleå airport has more than 15 daily departures to/from Stockholm.
