Norrbottens Museum

Norrbottens Museum is regional museum for a quarter of Sweden. The museum is situated in Hermelin Park in central Luleå. Every year there are numerous exhibitions displaying art and cultural history. In 2012 the Norrbotten Arts and Crafts Society is celebrating its 130th anniversary by staging various exhibitions throughout the summer. For children there is the “Olden Days Exhibition” where they can, among other things, experience being a farmhand or a maid on an old fashioned farm. Take a trip through Swedish military history, from the end of the 1800s to present day. The children’s exhibition “The Mystery of the City” runs from June until August. “Life is being on the river” Professional adventurer Love Rynbäck is Swedish Lapland’s leading white water enthusiast. He has 16 years’ experience of guiding in Northern Scandinavia and operates the adventure and experience company CreActive Adventure. Of course, he prefers to be outdoors with his guests rather than stuck in the office. What attracted you to white water rafting?

– I grew up close to the water and rivers here in the North. As a young boy I remember being fascinated as I sat in my grandfather’s wooden boat on the river. That’s probably where it all began. Why is white water rafting in Swedish Lapland so special?

– Lapland is covered in stretches of white water that are perfect for paddling.There are still so many unexplored rivers and streams for white water enthusiasts. What is your favourite white water memory?

– It has to be the first time I entered the Kaitum River.Wild, beautiful and completely unspoiled! What is the best thing about white water rafting? Is it the spectacular scenery or the adrenalin kick?

“I love the water and its constant changes in colour and form”

Oskar Hederyd is an outdoor enthusiast who operates Canoe Adventure North. In the harbour at Kängsön, outside Råneå, he offers paddling adventures and runs a canoeing shop and equipment hire. “Paddling is the perfect combination of exercise and adventure,” he says. Why is it such a unique experience to paddle in Swedish Lapland?

– Above all, there are four factors. The light, the relative isolation, the pure water and the scenery.We have a shorter season here than in many other places, but when the season does arrive it is really good. Describe the perfect canoe trip.

– I am on the river, maybe the Råne River or one of our other free-flowing rivers here in the North, with a nice group of people. Twenty four hour daylight, good weather and fairly warm water. If we get to see any wildlife in action, like last summer just above Mårdsel when we saw a peregrine falcon catch a bird right next to us, then the experience truly is complete in every way. Seeing a bear is always exciting too. Rent a kayak or canoe directly by the beach! Good places to visit within easy reach. We have kayaks from Rainbow Oasis. The kayak is without a rudder but have enform which makes it very stable course.

The Lule River, downstream from The Råne River is widely known as one Boden power station, is one of the best of Sweden’s best rivers for large pike. stretches of water in the country for Few, however, are aware of the good grayling fishing in nearly all the rapids along the river trout and salmon. – even in Råne Town Centre. 3 of Westrin’s Favourites Gunnar Westrin from Rånea is a globetrotting fisherman and one of the most read fishing writers of our time. Armed with a camera and a fishing rod, he has explored the fishing waters of Northern Sweden for more than 40 years. Here Gunnar reveals some of his favourite spots. 1. The Råne River – the unexploited Råne River is the lifeblood of the area with a variety of biotopes and populations of grayling, pike and perch. The fluctuating form and pace of the river as it navigates the forests of Swedish Lapland with calm sections and rapids provides for a fantastic fishing experience. A place where you can truly be alone with your thoughts. For me this is a well-functioning home fishing water. 2. Vitträsket i Sörbyn – is one of the best functioning fish management organizations and offers very pleasant char fishing. This is where I usually spend my first hours of fly fishing every season with a float tube around my waist accompanied by the howl of swans in nearby waterways. The chance to catch really big fish here adds to the experience. 3. IInner Råne Archipelago – a truly fantastic area with a world class pike population. The early season fly fishing for pike near the mouth of the river is spectacular.

We are a lively dash of colour in the world of Swedish design. Our designs have a unique expression that is based in our culture and scenery. The mountains, coastal islands and our Sámi heritage are constant sources of inspiration.

Where do you find inspiration?

– In old traditions, different cultures and landscapes. To feel and try different materials is also very important. Can you really go to a party dressed in your clothing? Or are they only suitable for outdoor adventures?

– Of course you can go to a party in my clothes! I certainly do. The garments are inspired by outdoor adventures. But both the look and the materials are adapted to suit the office, the pub, a nice dinner or a party. Why does fashion from Swedish Lapland deserve international recognition?

– I am careful to ensure that I am clearly seen as a bearer of the strong, proud primal force of Swedish Lapland. I believe that people are often looking for safety and security and that is something we can definitely provide here in Swedish Lapland. If you feel secure then it is easier to feel proud and attractive, and that is something I want the people who wear my garments to feel.

1. Think value, not price I calculate my purchases in CPU: Cost per Use. How many times will I use those jeans? If the answer is “all the time” then it is worth paying a little extra for them. It is the same when I look at a lace top in spring colours, how often? If the answer is “a couple of times” then I will check the cheaper fashion chains. Easy!

2. Accessorize more I truly love necklaces, scarves, earrings and hats. They are the cheapest and simplest way to avoid buying new clothes. Instead of an orange shirt that is in fashion right now an orange bracelet might be enough. Or why not revive an old patterned scarf that has orange tones?

3.The style is in the shoes Imagine a perfect white t-shirt and a pair of blue jeans. For me this is one of the best outfits anyone can wear. Suitable for any occasion. It all depends on the shoes. With black high heels, a nice clutch and large earrings you will be stylish at any party. Ballet shoes and a jacket for a job meeting. Or a pair of nice sneakers for a cozy Sunday. Gammelstad Church Town is one of the largest and best preserved church towns in the world More than 400 privately-owned church cabins stand huddled around the medieval stone church. In 1996 Gammelstad Church Town was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. World Heritage Sites are selected because of their universal value to the human race. The goal is to protect and preserve our most important cultural heritage sites for future generations. Gammelstad is where the city of Luleå was founded and the stone church is the largest medieval church in Northern Sweden. It was built in 1492 as part of creating and strengthening the Swedish border. The first church cabins were most likely erected during the 1500s. Farmers from surrounding villages built small cabins for overnight stays in conjunction with church visits, town meetings, markets and other important occasions. During the Middle Ages the Church Town became an important trading centre. Today the traditions of the Church Town continue in a living World Heritage Site with shops, restaurants and accommodation. Handicrafts and the cuisine of Swedish Lapland are an important focus. Take a guided tour or experience the Church Town on your own. Boden son Eyvind Johnson is one of Sweden’s greatest authors.

The traditional county costume for the historical county of Northern Bothnia was first worn publicly on April 16, 1912. The 100th anniversary of this costume is celebrated in an exhibition. Another exhibition celebrates the 130th anniversary of the Arts and Crafts Society by demonstrating the significance of arts and crafts in the home and in society at large. norrbottensmuseum.nu

He was born in a little bakehouse in an area of Boden known as Björkelund on July 29, 1900 and died in 1976. He carried the traditions and heritage of Swedish Lapland with him throughout his life. “Don’t over-season quality raw ingredients” When Simon Laiti was young his parents ran a summer restaurant in the Torne Valley. His choice of career was simple – Simon became a chef. Now he operates Hemmagastronomi, a well-renowned food studio and delicatessen in Luleå’s Northern Harbour. Summer Guide caught up with Simon for a chat about his passion for raw ingredients from Swedish Lapland. You were trained at several top level restaurants in Gothenburg. How do you use that experience when you cook with local raw ingredients?

– My starting point is in French cooking techniques. I combine these techniques with high-quality raw ingredients from Swedish Lapland. I am happy to follow trends, so the way I cook changes all the time.

You cook exclusive dishes in your food studio, Hemmagastronomi, and ingredients from Swedish Lapland are often seen as delicacies. Is there such a thing as more everyday ingredients in the culinary spectrum of Swedish Lapland?

– Vendance, Kalix Bleak Roe, reindeer products, Arctic brambles and wild herbs.

– Most definitely! Moose soup, the many different stews and boiled salmon. In earlier times, they often used less expensive raw ingredients and prepared traditional, hearty stews. Generally speaking though, we have always eaten good, tasty food up here in the North because there is so much game, berries and fish.

Are our local ingredients easy or difficult to cook with?

Why is locally produced food important?

– Relatively easy given the fantastic raw ingredients available.We have a solid foundation to build on and I think that should be our focus. Don’t over-season an ingredient, let it taste like it is meant to, because it already tastes good.

– It is good for the environment and supports the community where we live. The chef also develops an understanding of the raw ingredient. You might meet the farmer who raises the stock. This creates a sense of belonging and also means that you treat the ingredient with respect. Cooking can be fun! But simply because something is produced locally does not mean it is automatically good. You should always be clear with producers about your demands.

Hiking in Luleå In Luleå there are plenty of options if you want to hike in a scenic setting. The Municipality of Luleå’s Excursion Map provides you with information about all the hiking tracks and walking trails in the area. You can purchase it at the Tourist Office in Kulturens hus.

The Archipelago Trail is perfect if you want to experience the stunning archipelago on foot. This trail takes you from the airport in Kallax to Brändöskär via a number of islands. The trail is 3.5 km in total including transportation by boat. The Hemberg Trail in Ersnäs is a 6 km trail in varying terrain around Hemberg Mountain. The trail starts at Gläntan near Bäcktorps Road. There you will find a barbeque area, firewood and a new long-drop toilet. The trail passes a mine. At the top of the mountain there is a barbeque area and a great view. The Fäbod Trail in Antnäs is just over 10 km and starts at Sörby Church Hall. This boarded trail with clear signage passes four shielings. You will hike through areas of both old and new forest. The shielings hold memories from the second half of the 1500s and the cabins are more than 100 years old. Many are open to visitors, so please have a look inside and see how life was on the sheep pastures of old. The Nature Trail is a hiking trail on the island of Kluntarna in Luleå Archipelago. The trail is divided into Lilla slingan, which takes about an hour, and Stor stigen, which takes about two hours. The trails follow existing paths and roads as well as the beautiful shoreline. We recommend you take a map and clear directions, since the trails are not always clearly marked. A clear description of the trails is available from the Tourist Office and from the cabin attendants on Kluntarna. The trail description also contains information about interesting sights as well as the flora, fauna and geology of the island.

Bälingeberget The Bälingeberget Nature Reserve rises 139 metres above sea level. This is an easily-accessible, popular destination with trails, rest areas and wind shelters. There are as many as 200 different types of plant here, most of them are orchids. Deer and moose frequent Bälingeberget. The area is also home to many forest birds, owls and other birds of prey, and the three-toed woodpecker.

Storklinten Ecopark is located a short drive from Boden. It is one of Sveaskog’s 36 eco-parks throughout the country. Every ecopark consists of wide open spaces where ecology is prioritized above making money. These are areas of true natural beauty that are easy for visitors to enjoy. Storklinten Ecopark offers a varied, rolling landscape. High, rounded mountain tops are surrounded by steep slopes. Between the slopes are gentler sections with brooks, swamps and small woodland lakes. Memories of Boden Walking Tour Åpromenaden in central Boden offers a riverside walk through the history of Boden. This historical photo exhibition begins in Kungsbro Park near the Kungsbro Bridge and continues along the Bodån stream. There are interesting things to see and plenty of park benches for when you want to take a break. Minizoo for the Children Steeped in history and tradition, Gäddviksgården outside Luleå was built in 1913 and used to function as a Mission Church. Parklife in Luleå Luleå has a number of very central parks, perfect for when you want to stroll, play or simply relax. Gültzaudden is a popular recreation area in central Luleå with a sandy beach on the banks of the Luleå River. It has a playground, summer café and expansive grassy area for picnics. THE SAUNA

The sauna is a favourite pastime in Swedish Lapland and a pleasant way to relax and enjoy the company of others.. Swedish Lapland has a long, proud sauna tradition that it shares with its Finnish neighbours. The word sauna comes from Finnish and literally means “smoke cabin”. The first known saunas were more or less buried in the ground. There is documented evidence of saunas in Stockholm from the end of the 1400s – they were then known as “sweat cabins”. Before soap was invented the sauna was a very convenient way to take care of personal hygiene. Dirt and grime was “sweated out” and then rinsed away with water.
