FEBRUARY 2013

FORMULA MONTHLY FORMULA STUDENT CZECH REPUBLIC

CZECHING IN WITH STYLE! Formula Manipal now has two platforms to showcase its prowess! The team added another feather to its cap by successfully registering in two events this year! Since its inception, it would be the first time that the team is participating in two events. Formula Student Czech Republic is the second event the 2013 team will be attending this year. Formula Manipal was the 7th team to register for the FS Czech event, and will be participating in the same, apart from the first event, FS Germany. This is the first year Czech Republic is hosting an FSAE event, and is hence an excellent opportunity for Formula Manipal to establish a stronghold among the international student racing fraternity. In the mean while, the team has almost finished its work on the car, and our latest car is soon to have its first test run. With only 4 months in hand for our first event of the year, the team has begun working day-in and day-out, putting in their level best in the making of the car. 2013 has indeed been a very eventful year for Formula Manipal… Two event registrations, another new car to be proud of, and neck-to-neck competition that will test our mettle to the fullest! Yet, the team radiates optimism and dedication…after all, Formula Manipal is ‘Engineered With Passion’ !!!

MONTHLY UPDATES

Preliminary Design Of The 2014 Chassis

The Modified Brake Disc For The 2013 Car

STRUCTURE The powder-coating of the chassis was done this month. The team is about to begin the manufacture of the bodywork of the car. The Structure team completed the preliminary design of the 2014 chassis. The ergonomics apparatus was manufactured by the 2014 team. Also, the ergonomic readings were taken to initiate the design of the 2014 chassis.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS The FMX3’s brake hydraulic circuit was bled for the first time in February. The car faced a problem during bleeding as the pedal mounting brackets came off. To repair it, the design was analyzed again, and it was found that the area allocated for the brackets was too less. The new mounting brackets were then redesigned with denser material and increased reinforcements and welded onto the chassis. The work on the suspension and steering geometry was started by the 2014 team in February. The design for the integrated stub axle with hub for the Season 2014 car is in progress. The team is aiming to manufacture its own brake disc for FMX3.

The New Intake Manifold On FMX3

The New Design Of The Sprocket Flange

The material for the same has been sourced and received. Its manufacture is going to commence in the near future.

ENGINE The Engine team received the new Intake Manifold from Imaginarium (India) Pvt. Ltd. The downstream aluminium cooling lines of the radiator and all the planar bends for the new in-house exhaust primaries were manufactured. The 2014 team completed their preliminary design of the fuel rail and exhaust primaries. The CAD design of the dry sump oil reservoir tank was also completed. A new external fuel pump is likely to be used on the 2014 car.

TRANSMISSION This month witnessed the powder coating of the scatter shield. The final length of the half shafts was rectified and splines were cut on them. The half shafts were then austempered and nitriding was done on them. Moreover, the pneumatic calculations were done by the 2014 team. The differential mounting forces and the forces on stub axle were calculated and the center distance between the sprockets of the chain drive was also determined.

MONTHLY UPDATES ELECTRONICS The engine side wire harnessing of the car was completed at Race Dynamics, Bangalore this month. The Pneumatic PCB was soldered with Arduino NANO which was static tested. SOT (Surface On Top) soldering of ADC on breakout board was Testing the arduino microcontroller done and tested. The Electronics team also completed the pneumatic and DAQ (Data Acquisition) circuitry and soldering of LED Array PCB. Meanwhile, the 2014 team is busy doing research on the manufacture of a new display PCB for the 2014 car’s dashboard.
