Monthly Newsletter | OCTOBER 2012

Towards the end of October, the basic chassis had been completed , which was the major accomplishment of the month. The designing, manufacture and assembly of various parts had begun with gusto. LEMO, which was one of our in-kind sponsors in the 2011, is sponsoring us once again this season. Another month closer to the completion, the team has doubled its hard work to complete the car. Our fan page on Facebook has crossed the milestone of 1500 likes. We thank our followers for the unprecedented support.

STRUCTURE The Structure Team has worked hard on the completion of the basic chassis. The rear of the chassis was completed initially, followed by the cockpit and front part of the chasis. Subsequently, the engine was mounted on it to check if the dimensions of the chassis were correct. The cutting, grinding and welding of each tube of the chassis was done in the workshop.

ENGINE The engine mounting cups were welded onto the chassis. The hand lay-up method attempted in the manufacture of the restrictor was unsuccessful, because the resin could not be applied uniformly. The restrictor, along with the intake manifold and the strainer is now being imported from U.S.A. based manufacturer Stratasys. Currently, the engine is under repair. The repairs on the upper swing arm of the dyno-stand have been completed and the dyno-testing of the engine is planned for near future.

TRANSMISSION A wooden prototype of the differential mount was manufactured and was used to cross-check the upper swing arm points on the chassis.. The clevis for the differential mounting jig was manufactured. The driving sprocket was shifted 2mm away from the engine to create more space between the engine upper swing arm and upper mounting point of the differential mount, which has facilitated the inclusion of a nylon bushing between them.

ELECTRONICS The Arduino board setup is being replaced with the ATmega16 microcontroller setup to gain more flexibility in coding and hardware implementation. The brake light (a set of 6 red LEDs of 1 Watt power) was manufactured according to the specifications. Moreover, the preliminary designing of the power distribution module PCB mount was completed. The data acquisition of the uprights was done as well.

VEHICLE DYNAMICS The inserts of the ball joints were replaced by cups to make the suspension more reliable. The cups, column mount and the steering paddle box were manufactured by Flamepack Manipal. Bearings were ordered for the recently manufactured bell crank cups. The new brake lines arrived which are more flexible and of smaller outer diameter than the previous one which the team is looking forward to test in the near future.

TEAM MEMBER OF THE MONTH Yash Uppal a.k.a Uppal Uppal has efficiently co-ordinated with the sponsors and helped out in the logistics works. He has on his own managed the entire finance of the team. Uppal loves coding in different languages like C, C++ and Java, and has hence been of help to the electronics team. In his leisure time, Uppal likes to be with his friends and watch movies.
