GERMANY AWAITS US!

With the advent of a new year, Formula Manipal has its spirits on a high! The team successfully registered for Formula Student Germany, being the first team in the world to have done the same, completing the registration quiz in less than 72 seconds! F S Germany is one of the most prestigious FSAE competitions in the world, and the team’s superlative performance in the registration phase has raised the bar for Formula Manipal. Meanwhile, the atmosphere in the workshop reflects a sense of pride, as well as devotion to the final stage of assembly. The team is looking forward to the completion of the car, as the D-day is fast approaching. Read on to know the monthly updates on the car…

STRUCTURE The final welding brackets on the chassis has been completed. The stress relieving treatment of the chassis was done in Bangalore followed by the assembly of components on it. The floor pan was manufactured and assembled on the chassis. VEHICLE DYNAMICS The tire data was received in January and the Vehicle Dynamics Team is in the process of analyzing it. The tie rods and toe rods were manufactured. The suspension brackets were welded onto the chassis. The testing of the anti-roll bar was done this month, and the steering torque calculations were completed. The front and rear suspension assembly and the steering assembly were completed. ENGINE The assembly of the engine on the chassis was completed this month. The manufacture of the second set of exhaust primaries is in progress. The engine team used aluminium cooling lines as an alternative to rubber cooling lines for weight reduction. The existing fuel tank was not in accordance with the rules of the competition, and hence a new fuel tank had to be made. The new fuel lines were also received from Bangalore in January.

TRANSMISSION The sprocket flange and outboard stub axle, which were sent for spline cutting were received. The month of January witnessed the heat treatment of half shafts, and inboard and outboard stub axles. These components, along with the scatter shield, chain and mechanical shifter were then assembled onto the frame. ELECTRONICS The Electronics Team completed the dashboard side assembly on the car. The footprint of the Pneumatic PCB was received. The car was sent to Race Dynamics, Bangalore for the completion of the engine side wiring harness. The Max1039 breakout board for the ADC (Analog to Digital Converter) has been received by the team. The designing of the LED Array PCB, Power Distribution Module Distribution PCB and Pneumatic PCB was completed. TEAM MEMBERS OF THE MONTH Saurav (a.k.a Bangaali) and Akshay, from the Structure Team are the first among Team 2014 to be selected as the Team Members of the Month. Saurav worked on the heat treatment of the chassis and designing of the impact attenuator, while Akshay worked on the ergonomics and chassis design.
