Formula Monthly - Summer Newsletter 2014

The last few months have been quite rewarding for Formula Manipal, as during this period, we not only cleared the FS Germany Scrutineering Quiz (which decides our place in the Technical Inspection line-up at the competition) in 3 minutes and 51 seconds but also the FS India Registration Quiz.

We have also submitted the Cost Report, Executive Summary of the Business plan, Design Spec Sheet and the Engineering Design Report to both FSG and FSCZ. Amidst all this, the team members took a few days off to appear for their end-semester examinations and are now back working towards their dream. The work on the design of the season 2015 car has also begun.

SUBSYSTEM UPDATES Structure The chassis of the FMX4 was received after powder coating. The CFRP bodywork along with the new CFRP dashboard are currently being manufactured. Furthermore, work is being done on the chassis, fixtures and the bodywork design of the season 2015 car.

Vehicle Dynamics The steering wheel plate for FMX4 was manufactured by our valued sponsor Flamepack Manipal on which Rohacell foam pads will be fixed, for better comfort. CAD model of the preliminary pedal assembly, wheel hubs and the suspension for the season 2015 car were prepared. A preliminary design for the inserts and the front bell crank were also completed. Also, Wilwood PS1 calipers were received.

Engine The new radiator assembly was received from BEHR India Ltd. In addition to this, a new Akrapovic titanium muffler with a carbon fibre cap was received. The team is working on the engine jig design and the exhaust manifold for the season 2015 car. Also, work on dry sump lubrication system is underway.

Transmission The 42 and 44-teeth sprockets were manufactured by Magod Laser Pvt. Ltd. and received for testing. The static testing of the pneumatic clutch along with the paddle box was completed using the components provided by our coveted sponsor Festo. For the 2015 season, iterations of tripod housing, differential mounts, sprocket and stub axle were made.

Electronics Pneumatic clutch setup was finalized and its static testing was completed. In addition to this, accelerometers were received and the calibration was done. The Lambda Sensor used to check the oxygen content in the exhaust were received and calibrated.

Anderson connectors which are used to connect lower AWG wires were also received. FreeRTOS is being worked on using LPC1769.

Anand Raj a.k.a Nandu, a second year Mechanical Engineering student, a vital cog of the Transmission Subystem, is the team member of the month May. He designed the differential mounts and worked on the drive train of the FMX4. He is also working on the Cost Report. In his leisure time he likes playing games, sketching and driving.
