YOUR NEW CHAPTER AWAITS
by MARTIE EMORY
Surrounded by the small town charms of Concord, and an easy distance from both the beach and mountains of North Carolina, Taylor Glen Life Plan Community is a much-loved choice for senior living at its best. Resting on slightly more than 100 acres of beautifully rolling hills, Taylor Glen is proud to be part of a 70-year legacy of impeccable community living, grounded in honesty, loyalty and compassion that comes from the heart.
While this Concord community is a mere 30-minute drive to enjoy all that Charlotte has to offer, close to the Charlotte Motor Speedway, shopping at Concord Mills Outlet Center, and gives you and your family easy airport access, you’ll still feel tucked away once you arrive on campus. Experience a new level of comfort and convenience in a place where everything you need is within reach.
So, naturally, Taylor Glen continues to grow –listening to residents’ wishes and evolving with even more distinctive living options.
“The existing community is currently full, with a long waitlist, but people also wanted larger units,” explains Jennifer Bartscht, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for ThriveMore, adding there were currently no standalone homes on campus.
Now, Taylor Glen is excited to announce the addition of 33 Cottage Homes, as well as a new Villa apartment building – boasting more modern finishes and larger open spaces. Three floor plans are available for the new cottages and four different layouts for the upcoming villa apartments.
“Our new cottages are situated in a pocket neighborhood, where the front door faces the exterior green space instead of onto the street,” shares
Jennifer. “A very intentional layout, this allows front doors that open to a serene and inviting green space. It also encourages socialization with neighbors and maximizes views off the front porch. We have sold 30 out of our 50 new homes – they are going fast!”
As part of the current pre-sale phase, the Taylor Glen staff is accepting 10% deposits for cottages and villa apartments, which offers new residents the opportunity to choose their layout and make interior selections for their soon-to-be new home.
“Our new cottages are situated in a pocket neighborhood, where the front door faces the exterior green space instead of onto the street.”
- JENNIFER BARTSCHT VICE PRESIDENT OF SALES AND MARKETING
Residents of the new cottages and apartments will have access to the same wonderful amenities package as present Taylor Glen residents. The community recently received a refresh to the lobby, and residents are looking forward to a re-do of the dining venue and café space as part of the project.

As each individual has different needs for daily living, Taylor Glen strives to offer the finest levels of care possible – from
independent living and assisted living, to memory care, short-term rehabilitation and skilled nursing.
As part of the expansion project Taylor Glen will be adding The Green House™ –the first ever in North Carolina. This home is an innovative combination of smallhome design and elder-driven culture. The universal worker role within The Green House Project represents a shift from the traditional approach to elder care towards a more person-directed care approach in this environment. This new home will care for Taylor Glen residents that are affected by cognitive impairments.
Taylor Glen residents are also thankful to embrace an active retirement lifestyle, taking full advantage of a wide variety of campus and community activities. That might include fishing by the lake, enjoying a stroll or brisk walk along the paths or relaxing in the pool and fitness area that’s open daily for both classes and individual workouts. ART SPEAK: UNVEILING LAKE NORMAN’S CREATIVE VOICES
by LAURA CZERWINSKI
This month’s featured creator is Esther Moorehead. She is a painter and a muralist.
How would you describe your work?
Where there’s life, there’s hope. That is the pulse of my work. approach making art with one simple but powerful purpose – to emphasize the significance of human connection and interaction. I search for metaphors and symbols in common subjects like streets, crosswalks, wayfinding markers and anonymous figures in motion to create contemporary urban landscapes. love to capitalize on the subtle interplay of positive and negative space, light and shadow, to bring unexpected wonder to otherwise overlooked encounters.
Which other artists most inspired you? have found Piet Mondrian, Mark Rothko, John Singer Sargent and Lawren Harris to all be great sources of inspiration.
Where do you find your best sources for inspiration?
draw creative influence from figures and forms depicted in art from ancient civilizations; from pattern, order and ubiquitous beauty in nature; and especially from the constant ebb and flow of people in urban centers. I love to travel to observe the diversity of people groups and gain insight into the relativity of human perspectives on what is mundane versus spectacular.
What is the greatest compliment you’ve received about your work?
My heart is most happy when collectors and admirers tell me they feel like they can place themselves in my work, as if they could walk alongside the figures and participate in the joy of our collaborative physical and spiritual journeys.
What are you working on now that you are excited about?
am working on several large mural projects and proposals in Charlotte that I am very excited to dive into. I love scaling my work up to a fully immersive experience!
What is one piece of creative advice you wish you had learned sooner?
“Don’t doubt your ability.” I spent many years thinking I wasn’t qualified enough
or my work would never be considered good enough to make it into a full time career. Now that I have taken the leap of faith into being an “Artist-with-acapital-A”(!), I’m trying my best to use my time effectively to forge a future for my career that isn’t affected by the loss of those years where I was too afraid.
Where can our readers learn more about you and see some more examples of your work?

WEALTH CONCENTRATION RISK
by MIKE MCGILVARY, AIF ® , FINANCIAL ADVISOR
Simply put, Concentration Risk is having too much of your net worth tied up in one investment. The investment could be an individual stock-we see this a lot with equity compensated folks that receive stock options.
Another example could be real estate which is also common.
At Marzano Capital Group, our general rule of thumb is to have no more than 10-15% of your net worth in any one investment or asset class. This can be a challenge as everyone’s situation is different but here are 3 ways you can help mitigate Wealth Concentration in our opinion:
1. Take the emotion out of it! We have seen many folks become attached to a certain company stock and subject themselves to more risk than they really should in our opinion.
2. Work with a team of Financial Advisors including your Tax Professional: Coming up with a schedule of diversifying your wealth and the possible capital gains associated with this is something we do for many of our clients while working in tandem with their tax professionals of course.
3. On-Going Monitoring of your personal balance sheet: Overconcentration is typically not a 1-time issue, especially for investors that have amassed a large amount of equity in their companies. Continuous monitoring, we feel is very important from a net worth diversification point.
We hope this article was helpful, please reach out to our office with any further questions! Thanks so much.

RETIREMENT: IS
Truism #1: Not Every Day is Saturday
EVERYDAY SATURDAY?
by JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
Thinking ahead to retirement, many of us:
Imagined that every day would be Saturday – unencumbered and ours alone to define. Thought that once we crossed the finish line, time would be more malleable – ours alone to fill. Hoped that the constancy of emailing, texting and zooming would be ours alone to determine.
Ours alone looked like a future where every day would indeed be Saturday once the rest was blessedly behind us.
SELF CARE, CAREGIVER OR BOTH?
Well, here’s a reality check – while illness or chronic limiting conditions aren’t inevitable as we age, they are commonplace. In fact, the National Council on Aging notes that nearly 95% of adults 60 and older have at least one chronic condition, and nearly 80% have two or more. The most common of these include:
• Arthritis
• Heart disease
• Hypertension
• Cancer
• Type 2 diabetes
• Dementia
• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
• Depression
• Hearing loss
• Cataracts and refractive errors
• Back and neck pain
• Osteoarthritis
And yet, few talk about the practical and emotional aspects of preparing for a stage in life that will likely require:
• a great deal more and different forms of self care
• assuming the role of caregiver for a partner or family member
• doing both, simultaneously.
My tell me the truth girl inquiry – not to mention my own lived experience – tells me that the checklist that framed your everyday for the past, oh, 40 years or so will suddenly or eventually be populated with a whole new set of urgencies and to dos, so get ready!
Not every day is Saturday in retirement when managing chronic limiting conditions is in play. I’m sorry, but there you have it. That’s because most of the work of “managing” takes place on familiar terrain – ye old Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. That’s something you know well, so, plan to tap into the same skills that made you effective in managing your professional work – project management, time management, being proactive and having the mindset of a team player. Trust me, you will need those front desk people, schedulers, nurses and therapists to help you navigate the healthcare system as you face new and ongoing challenges. Show your appreciation for their role in your journey and always treat them well.
Also, be sure to use a calendar system that works for you, whether that’s your ubiquitous phone or a ginormous desk or wall calendar. Trust me, you will need to refer, coordinate and juggle – especially if you are tending to your own issues as well as those of a loved one.
Truism #2: Your “Tribe” Matters More Than Ever
You know the mantra: “It takes a village.” Almost always, when you are there for a neighbor, a neighbor will be there for you. Ensuring that you have people to reach out to for emotional support and for practical hands on help will be key to your sanity! Our people all live elsewhere which is why our home is filled with Hallmark greeting cards and small “thinking of you” gifts. These, along with the “call me when you need me” help from those nearby is priceless.
Truism #3: Taking Care of Yourself is Key to Your Health and Peace of Mind
I know, we get really tired of hearing this. But, this wise counsel is both spot on and timeless. While self care is individual, common actions you can engage in include things like:
• Eating healthy foods
• Working out regularly
• Taking time to relax
• Journaling
• Being with friends
• Making time for your special hobby
• Finding peaceful solitude
I “trick” myself into “working out regularly” by doing a 10-minute online video. Because 10 minutes? I can do that! Or take “being with friends.” I have a standing call with a dear friend in Massachusetts every Saturday afternoon. It’s a “date” that only an emergency can interrupt.
While every day may not be Saturday in retirement, you can equip yourself for an awesome journey ahead.
FINANCIAL FREEDOM
by IVEY GASKIN BAKER, CFP ® FINANCIAL ADVISOR, RAYMOND JAMES FINANCIAL SERVICES
COMMUNICATIONS AND RELATIONSHIP MANAGER, GASKIN ASSET MANAGEMENT
DRIVING TO AND FROM HUNTERSVILLE EVERY DAY, MY HUSBAND, BRETT, PASSES THE SIGN FOR THE NC POWERBALL JACKPOT LOTTERY. AS OF JULY 2024, IT’S CURRENTLY FLOATING AROUND $130 MILLION.
In our own family meetings, I’ve shared research and trained Brett to understand that, with a diversified investment strategy, an investor might reasonably rely on 4% in income off of a portfolio for 30 years.1 He likes to dream out loud, “Wouldn’t it be nice to win a cash value of $50 million? That’s two million a year for a long time. Just think about all that we could do.” My response to him is almost always, “Oh, it would be amazing, but the novelty would wear off. What would you do every day? Would you stop performing surgery? What lessons would that teach our sons if their dad hung it all up at 40?” We will occasionally hear our clients ask this very question to their working spouse, “What in the world would you do if you retired early?”
According to the NC Lottery website, the chance of winning the NC Powerball jackpot is one in 292 million.2 The chance for the Baker household to win is zero, because we don’t buy lottery tickets; so my husband’s dream about financial freedom at 40 will be a simple thought experiment. Let’s explore.
The goal and challenge we face as financial advisors is to encourage our clients to strike a healthy balance between living their beautifully messy lives today and saving enough where work is a choice and no longer a financial obligation. From my experience as an advisor, the dream of financial freedom doesn’t require a lottery win, and it doesn’t require waiting until 65 either. Sure, a massive financial windfall seemingly makes all options possible, but what we gain (the sense of freedom) is attainable if we simply personalize what “freedom” means to us.
Financial freedom provides choice. It may mean choosing a job where you can work an efficient 30hour work week to be present when your kids get home from school, to then return to a more full-time schedule and save as they age. For others, financial freedom means being debt free. Or maybe financial freedom is saving enough to take a month-long sabbatical at 53 to hike through Europe with family
before the kids go to college. Financial freedom could be working until 77 because you’re healthy, it’s your name on the business and you like to join your grandchildren on sales calls. (I could see that happening here at Gaskin Asset Management one day.) Still, for many, financial freedom is a traditional retirement at the end of a productive career to pursue personal interests like fishing, gardening and writing.
You might be surprised to learn that “retirement” is a fairly new cultural norm.
In 1935, at the advent of social security, Roosevelt and his administration endeavored to provide economic security for the aged amidst depression-era devastation that swept the nation. Payments were set to begin at age 65, while average life expectancies were only 60-64. It was presumably a sustainable benefit. A lot has changed since 1935. Employer pensions and defined contribution retirement plans (like 401(k)s) improved an employee’s ability to retire from work and live out their final years enjoying desired activities. Today’s retirement is not five or 10 years; for many, it is 20 years or more, and the financial requirement needed for a comfortable retirement is significant. Our aging population continues to increase the pace of benefit payouts, making younger generations less optimistic about the future of social security. With the shrinking presence of company-sponsored pensions, the weight of retirement planning today is now primarily on the individual, and life in 2024 is so expensive that long term saving feels impossible.
I think back to my husband. Does retirement feel like such a lofty goal that he feels we’d need to win the lottery to be able to enjoy life while we work and to fund our future lifestyle? Further, is 30 years in retirement really the goal?
Continued on page 30.
Continued from page 29.
If financial freedom is our desired reality, some effort is required, and there are a few helpful ways to save.
It is difficult to imagine what may be required to successfully retire; but retirement can be one of the easier savings goals to work towards because of accounts specifically designed to grow assets for traditional retirement, decades in the future. Retirement plans (401(k)s or SIMPLE IRAs) enable employees to contribute on autopilot, often with an employer match, rewarding good savings behavior. These accounts continue to be the most attractive to long term savers because most provide tax benefits via tax deduction and tax deferred growth. These accounts are also successful at growing funds for the future because of the penalties associated with early withdrawal. Instead of waiting for employees to enroll and elect their own participation rate, more employers are automatically enrolling employees into 401(k) plans at 6%. When combined with an employer match, that gets employees much closer to the 15% contribution rate recommended by financial advisors.3 Many retirement plan platforms also offer some simple modeling that can be very helpful in projecting and planning for desired retirement goals. Some even offer access to financial professionals if you want a deeper dive. Individual retirement accounts (IRAs) offer
many of the same benefits for savers that do not have access to an employer-sponsored retirement plan. The reality is that efficiently saving for retirement is possible, no matter where you find yourself!
Thankfully, $50 million is not required to live a good, long life. The current recommendation for millennials is to have $3 million by age 65. In order to reach this goal, you would have to save about $30 thousand a year over 30 years invested earning about seven percent. You must have the income and lifestyle to support this kind of savings rate, but that’s about a max contribution to a 401(k) for one spouse and a max IRA contribution for the other every year. When it comes to long term planning, time is on your side.
Health insurance often ties employees to their employer making career changes more challenging. Another very useful savings tool (often offered by employers with a high deductible health insurance plan) is a health savings account (HSA). Unlike your health insurance, HSA accounts are portable; you can take these funds with you if you change jobs. These accounts enable workers to contribute tax-free dollars to an account that can grow tax deferred and provide tax-free income to pay for health-related expenses.4 As we navigate life, health concerns can be some of our largest expenses, and it’s best to cover these expenses in the most efficient way possible.
There will likely be bumps along the road as we navigate life. If nothing else, to feel truly financially free is to live with financial security. It’s much easier to feel safe if you have a financial cushion in the case of emergencies. This is best accomplished by accumulating savings that would cover three to six months of living expenses, preferably held in a savings account that provides some interest. Tapping into savings rather than accumulating credit card debt is always the ideal choice!
If the Baker household won the lottery, we would pay off debt, set aside money for our three sons’ future college tuitions and we’d certainly travel more. I’m sure we would make a few frivolous purchases, we’re only human. We’d find authentic ways to be charitable, and we’d also likely invest in small businesses in our community. Still, our life wouldn’t really change. We would continue to work in some capacity because building and creating is in our DNA. The only difference is that we’d have a lot less concern about making and saving money from our work, and we’d play a bit more. We would feel a great sense of financial freedom.
While it feels like time is flying by, the reality is that life is long for most of us and that small intentional actions can have a big impact in the long term. have the suspicion that, with the help of a good financial planner, we could make many of our financial freedom dreams happen without a lottery win. What do you think?

EATING WITH INTENTION: MINDFUL EATING
by KATHARINE ROSENTHAL, RDN
What comes to mind when you first hear the word “diet?” Maybe it is following a meal plan or set of food rules or being told what to eat, when to eat, why to eat and how much to eat; or perhaps it is something you do with only one goal in mind – weight loss.
While it’s no secret that diets often don’t last long, many don’t realize the significant impact that diets can have on your relationship with food, even years after breaking the dieting cycle. The good news is you don’t have to be stuck in the diet mentality forever. In fact, there are many ways to improve your relationship with food for the long haul.
THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MINDFUL EATING AND INTUITIVE EATING
You may or may not have heard of the terms “mindful eating” and “intuitive eating.” Oftentimes, these concepts are used interchangeably, but there are a few key differences between the two. The biggest is that mindful eating is a principle of intuitive eating. Intuitive eating is a much broader term that includes a list of principles that can improve your relationship with food. The 10 principles of intuitive eating range from rejecting a diet mentality to enjoyably exercising your body.
MINDFUL EATING: A CLOSER LOOK
Let’s dive more into mindful eating. Mindful eating is all about awareness and intention. The core principle of this healthy eating technique is to be present and fully in tune with all your food's tastes, smells and textures.
BENEFITS OF MINDFUL EATING
There are countless benefits to practicing mindful eating. Mindfulness is about becoming more aware of one’s situation and choices rather than “judging” or reacting. Eating mindfully encourages one to make food choices that are satisfying and nourishing to the body. As we become more aware of our eating habits, we can then take action towards behavior changes and eating patterns that will benefit our health.
Mindful eating can be a beneficial tool for behaviors such as emotional eating which can lead to weight gain or obesity. A higher diet quality is sometimes associated with mindful eating. For example, you may choose more nutrient-dense foods when planning a meal.
Research has shown that practicing mindful eating can lead to an increase in psychological health, increased enjoyment while eating and a healthy body image.
HOW TO INCORPORATE MINDFUL EATING INTO YOUR LIFE
Here are some of my top tips for incorporating mindful eating into your life!
1. Set your phone down in a different room. This can help minimize distractions that can take you out of the present moment with your food.
2. Consider how you feel after eating the meal or snack.
3. Engage all your senses. Notice the sounds, colors, tastes, textures and smells of the food you are consuming.
4. Honor the food. Appreciate where the food was grown and who prepared the meal.
5. Listen to your hunger scale. Eat when you start to feel some hunger (not starved) and stop when your body feels satisfied, not overly full.
6. Start eating three meals a day. Going too long without eating can lead to a very strong sense of hunger, making it hard to be in tune during your meal.
Embracing mindful eating can transform your relationship with food from one of stress and restriction to one of joy and nourishment. By practicing mindfulness at each meal, you can learn to listen to your body’s needs, appreciate the food you consume and make choices that support your overall well being.
CELEBRATING WORLD’S ALZHEIMER’S DAY
THROUGH BEING AWARE OF THE EARLY SIGNS
by ELISA WALLACE COPPEDE
This September 12th, join many in recognizing the families and loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s Disease.
This celebration is a global effort to raise awareness and challenge the stigma around Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. The Alzheimer’s Association is one of the first resources to go to regarding learning more about the more than 55 million people across the world affected by this terrible disease.
As someone who has lost her father to this dreadful disease, I know firsthand how painful it is to see someone you love wither away. Whether you also have a loved one with this disease or would simply like to learn more about Alzheimer’s or dementia, this September is a wonderful time for all to make sure they are aware of the early signs of this dreadful disease. Early detection is crucial in helping those suffering from ALZ.
Before looking into the obvious signs that someone is experiencing Alzheimer’s or dementia, what exactly is the difference between the two? According to the article, “Alzheimer’s versus Dementia: What is the Difference,” by UCLA School of Medicine
Writer Diane Siervert, “Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause or type of dementia, accounting for the majority of cases.” Think of Alzheimer’s Disease as a specific type of dementia characterized by progressive memory loss and cognitive decline. Whereas Alzheimer’s Disease is a specific type of dementia, dementia is the overarching term that refers to a range of memory loss symptoms.
“Dementia is a general term used to describe a set of symptoms that affect cognitive abilities, memory, thinking and behavior,” Siervert writes. “It is not a specific disease but rather an umbrella term for a group of symptoms.”
For my father, we noticed a few memory issues and cognitive symptoms, which led us to
take him to a few doctors who specialized in dementia and the initial stages of Alzheimer’s. At first, he was diagnosed as being within the “mild dementia stage;” meaning he was beginning to show the early signs of having dementia. It was not until months later, when he began to quickly decline, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease.
All this said, what symptoms should one look for if concerned about their own loved one?
According to the Alzheimer’s Association article, there are 10 early signs and symptoms for Alzheimer’s and dementia.
According to their website, the first sign is “memory loss that disrupts daily life.” This sign by far, was what led us to worry about our father. If someone is asking the same question repeatedly, we should give pause.
The second sign is “challenges in planning or solving problems.” If your loved one has trouble planning, or working with simple math/finances, this could be another sign for which to look out.
The third sign is “difficulty completing familiar tasks.” When our father began to get confused with dressing himself, and would put on shirts inside out, we knew that something was clearly wrong.
If you know someone who gets confused about the date and time, and often eats at odd times, or wakes up to start their day at 2:00 a.m., then this is the fourth sign.
The fifth sign is “trouble understanding visual images or spatial relationships.” For example, if someone has trouble judging distance, and is increasingly becoming a troublesome driver, this is a clear sign of one of the two diseases.
“New problems with words in speaking and writing” is the sixth sign. If you know someone who recently calls familiar objects odd words (“hand clock” for a
“watch”), then you may need to investigate.
The seventh sign is “misplacing things.” While this may cause everyone to think they may have the disease, especially busy parents, with ALZ or dementia patients, this sign is more obvious because the person is unable in any way to retrace their steps and may get frustrated at losing the item.
“Decreased or poor judgment” is our eighth sign and occurs when the loved one makes poor choices, like donating to a cause that is clearly a fraud or having suddenly poor grooming habits.
If your loved one is suddenly not wanting to socialize, this is our ninth sign. “Withdrawal from work or social activities” is a clear indicator that something is off.
Finally, the 10th sign is the most difficult one to experience.
“Change in mood and personality” is something of which to be wary. For my family, my father’s personality shifted during those final years. He went from being incredibly happy go-lucky to being moody and short tempered. Sadly, this was a clear sign for us that he was sick.
Overall, while September 21st is a momentous day for all to either donate or volunteer at an organization that recognizes ALZ or dementia patients, these loved ones need help all year. As mentioned above, early detection is one of the best methods to begin helping your loved one.
By providing them with the support and love they need, together we all can begin removing the negative stigma around this disease and help them live their final years with the dignity they deserve.

DISCOVERING MELINDA LAWTON: FROM EMMY-NOMINATED ART
DIRECTOR TO MASTER JEWELER
Melinda Lawton’s artistic journey is as brilliant and unique as her jewelry. Initially majoring in broadcasting at the University of Florida, Melinda’s passion for art led her to switch majors, eventually earning a BA in graphic design. Her expertise in the revolutionary Quantel Paintbox computer graphics system propelled her to become the art director at WABC-TV in New York City at just 27 years old. Melinda’s career flourished in Los Angeles, where she earned two national Emmy nominations and served on the Board of Governors of the Television Academy.
Despite her success in TV and film, Melinda found a new passion in jewelry design. More than a decade ago, she left the bustling entertainment industry for Hendersonville, NC, where she opened Sweet Magnolia Gallery. Her jewelry, inspired by Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian designs, is crafted from precious and semi-precious stones and metals. Celebrities like Stevie Nicks and Carrie Underwood have worn her pieces, and her work has been featured in local and national magazines.
Melinda’s creations are more than beautiful accessories; they are symbols of strength. A customer once shared that wearing her jewelry gave them a sense of bravery. For Melinda, this is her life’s passion – to inspire women, one exquisite piece at a time.
During the pandemic, Melinda continued to innovate, adding vintage-inspired rings to her collection. Her dedication to her craft shines through each piece, crafted with inspiration from the gemstones she works with daily.
Jacqueline Bassett of Juelerye discovered Melinda and was so impressed that she drove to Hendersonville to see her pieces in person. Captivated by the artistry, Jacqueline knew she had to bring Melinda’s designs back to the Lake Norman area. Now, Juelerye proudly features Melinda Lawton Jewelry, offering exquisite, handmade pieces that blend antique inspiration with modern elegance.
Experience Melinda Lawton’s Artistry in Mooresville
On September 20th from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m., the vibrant town of Mooresville will host a special Gallery Crawl, where art enthusiasts can discover the brilliance of Melinda Lawton Jewelry at Juelerye | Artisan Gallery & Gifts. This event is a collaboration between four amazing downtown businesses, making it a community celebration of artistry and innovation. It is a unique opportunity to meet Melinda in person, learn about her creative process and see firsthand the intricate details of her exquisite jewelry.
Melinda’s journey from TV art director to master jeweler is a testament to her versatile talent and unyielding passion for art. Each piece of jewelry she creates tells a story, much like her own fascinating narrative. The Victorian, Georgian and Edwardian influences in her work bring a touch of historical elegance to contemporary designs, making each item a timeless treasure.
For those who cannot attend the Gallery Crawl on Friday, Melinda will be available again on Saturday, September 21st from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. This extended opportunity allows more art lovers and jewelry aficionados to engage with Melinda and explore her stunning collection.
A Journey of Inspiration and Creativity
Melinda’s work is not just about creating beautiful jewelry; it’s about inspiring confidence and strength in those who wear her pieces. Her dedication to uplifting women through her art is evident in every piece she designs. The testimonials from her customers highlight the impact her jewelry has on their lives, giving them a sense of bravery and inspiration.
The transition from the fast-paced world of television to the serene craft of jewelry making has allowed Melinda to channel her creativity in new and profound ways. Her ability to adapt and thrive in different artistic mediums is a testament to her exceptional talent and relentless pursuit of her passion.

TINY HOMES OF LAKE NORMAN
RELAX & UNWIND ON LAKE TIME
by MARTIE EMORY
If you’re looking for the perfect “home away from home” and you’re naturally intrigued by all the health benefits of living near water, come soothe your body and soul by the lake! Tiny Homes of Lake Norman is an ideal second home destination, where your time is definitely your own.
Since 2016, Lake Norman RV Resort owner Jim Davidson has closely watched the widespread growing love for Tiny Homes. As he saw the exciting trend evolving, he began adding a few units at a time to his RV Resort in Sherrills Ford. His intuition paid off, and the resort is now 75% converted from RV Resort to a Tiny Homes community.
“The conversion will be fully complete by 2024,” Jim explains. “That’s a year ahead of my initial expectations!”
Steadily growing in popularity, his team is selling one or two homes a month. Once you visit, and witness firsthand the lake setting, breathtaking sunsets, and incredible amenities, we know you’ll find a model that’s right for you!
Current Tiny Homes owners use their smaller residences as a mix of primary and secondary homes—based on their lifestyle and family needs. Owners purchase the 399-square-foot tiny homes and rent their lot, based on location and view. Jim is also now offering investors the opportunity to purchase, with the RV Resort managing all rentals, to maintain security and rental price consistency.
And, you can rent a fully-furnished tiny home here for your next vacation—before making a purchase—to give you and your family time to get to know what lake life is all about. The reasons we know you’ll say ‘yes’ to a tiny home of your own are plentiful!
• Tiny Homes are significantly more efficient and environmentally friendly, and a smaller living space automatically results in lower costs for both heating and cooling.
• Owners of Tiny Homes here will be able to enjoy all the wonderful amenities offered by the RV Resort, including kayaks, water boards, pedal boats, and pontoon rentals, along with a game room, exercise room, boat ramp and boat slips for guests, plus a fabulous new pool is slated to open for the 2024 pool season!
• Securely gated and built for privacy, the Tiny Homes community provides total peace of mind for you and your family. What more could you want for your private escape?
• Tiny Homes of Lake Norman is located less than an hour from Charlotte, and that means you’ll be close to enjoying the area’s favorite professional sports teams, amazing dining and shopping options, and exciting opportunities for fans of the performing arts.

TINY HOMES OF LAKE NORMAN
MOTHER NURTURE
INVESTING IN KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS THAT LAST A LIFETIME
by IVEY GASKIN BAKER
The summer is possibly the most chaotic time for a working mom; navigating where each child is going to be and when. Still, the summer will always offer a nice, natural opportunity to get away from work for a bit to just rest and recover while fishing on the lake or floating in the pool. Summer has always felt like slower days but in a very busy season that seems to just fly by. Rain returned, and it was almost as if the ground and our plants got the opportunity to take in a big inhale and with its exhale reveal new beauty and life. It was refreshing to witness. Hydrangeas that roasted in the summer heat, grew back new green leaves. Flowers that had resisted growth, shot up full of blooms. Those daily watering sessions were enough to keep
everything alive, but they were just not the same as those really satisfying Earth-drenching rains.
The gardens also became very noisy as pollinators flooded the gardens. Hummingbirds, goldfinches and bluebirds that I had never seen in our yard before were suddenly fluttering all around. Fat bumblebees would fill the folds and layers of marigolds. Beautiful eastern tiger swallowtails would put on a show as they moved from zinnia to zinnia actively pollinating with their legs and proboscis. During our daily garden walks, the boys quietly swarm around to get a view of nature’s show. My youngest used to nearly panic at the sight and sound of a bee yelling, “Mommy, die” commanding me to
kill the bees. Butterflies are easy for children to enjoy, but it is so important that we educate our children that bees are our friends and to not be afraid. These pollinators have helped our flower gardens and vegetable raised beds thrive. Without them, there wouldn’t be much color or juicy tomatoes to enjoy.
The gardens were also noisy with attractors; friends and neighbors walking by in the neighborhood as the boys stood with me assembling bouquets. I was finally able to pull together some full bouquets this month, enabling me to practice the simple act of floral arranging. I helped the boys understand which flowers were ready to be cut, how to use shears and where they needed to be cut to allow for future blooms on our cut and come again varieties. I also tracked the individual flowers in the bouquets to see how long they would last in a vase after cutting. A personal goal would be to be able to build arrangements for customers that we could ensure would look fresh for a week or more. Snapdragons, dahlias and zinnias are my longest lasting cut flowers, and they will certainly take center stage next year in our garden.
The boys are back in school. Thankfully, the pool has stayed warm, and the tomatoes are still coming, extending our summer. Just as my husband starts to think I’ll be laying flowers to rest for a bit, seeds and bulbs start showing up in the mail for fall plantings.
“Summer has always felt like slower days but in a very busy season that seems to just fly by. Rain returned, and it was almost as if the ground and our plants got the opportunity to take in a big inhale and with its exhale reveal new beauty and life.”

SELF-ESTEEM: HOW YOU CAN HELP OTHERS
by JEAN MARIE JOHNSON
I bet that you and I are a lot alike – we find it painful to witness someone we care about weighted down by low self-esteem. We notice their negative self-perception, their persistent self-doubt and maybe their deeply felt belief that they are just “not good enough.” All the while, we’re thinking that’s not at all how I see you...how can you possibly believe that about yourself...of course you can do that!
We want to be helpful, but we’re not sure how especially considering that a person’s low self-esteem may be rooted in their:
• Parental relationship and upbringing
• Early childhood trauma
• Poor peer relationships, particularly during adolescence
• Pattern of negative self-talk
• Making comparisons with others
• Focus on past failures
• Utter perfectionism
Poor self-esteem may also be rooted in:
• Socioeconomic status (low, creating stigma; or high, experiencing status pressure)
• Cultural and social media bombardment
Improving self-esteem takes time, commitment, support, encouragement and, sometimes, the help of a trained professional.
DON’TS AND DOS
As a loving and well intentioned friend, partner, parent, sibling or co-worker who truly wants to help, stay away from:
Spewing generic “praise” such as “you’re awesome” – which means nothing to a person with low self-esteem.
Dismissing their emotions as in “now, that’s silly!” – because it shuts them down and suggests that you are judging them.
Giving advice such as “here’s what you should do” – which only reinforces that they can’t come up with their own answers.
Glossing over their struggles with a “rah rah” speech – which will shut them down while sending the message that you really don’t get it.
INSTEAD, YOU CAN BE HELPFUL WHEN YOU:
Cool your jets, close your lips and really listen. There is no substitute for feeling heard. So, put that phone on mute and stick it in your handbag. Pay close attention to words, tone of voice and body language to let your person know that you are with him or her.
Challenge negative beliefs and self talk. If your person says “I can’t get anything right,” encourage them to rethink and reframe that. You might say “I know you’ve had some rough spots when things didn’t go as you’d hoped, but you’ve also had a number of wins. Remember when...”
Tell them why you value them – point out their gifts, strengths and achievements. People with low self-esteem tend to see only the thorns, not the beautiful blossoms. By acting as a mirror that reflects your person’s particular qualities, strong points and successes, you help her to reach for a more balanced sense of herself.
Focus on concrete and specific praise and compliments. Doing so is a skill that requires you to translate the ubiquitous “you’re awesome, a rock star, the best” into granular observations such as “I noticed how skillfully you handled that irate customer.” Or, “I have always appreciated your kindness toward everyone.” Or “Janelle told me all about how you rallied the team after that close loss.”
AND, BE SURE TO ENCOURAGE:
Healthy relationships and “happy people.” Emotions truly are contagious! Hang around glum, negative leaning people, and you will only find the air slowly seeping out of your own balloon. Support your person in widening her circle or limiting the time and emotional energy she expends on those who walk around with a dark cloud over their heads.
Being good to themselves. We hear this suggestion everywhere we turn because it’s essential to our sense of well being and our ability to enjoy our lives. Your person may not be accustomed to practicing kindness turned inward. Listen for this, ask them what this would look like and encourage them to go for it – and often! This could also mean supporting them in pursuing an offbeat or new interest which will bring both challenge and a new source of potential joy to their life.
Laughter, gratitude and good heartedness. Can there ever be enough? Bring on an endorphin shift by infusing lighthearted humor, shared laughter and simple reflections on gratitude. Also, extend small kindnesses – cards, inspirational quotes, small gifts – anything that says “I value and care about you. You matter.” And yes, make it abundantly personal!
Dear Dr. Keith,
I’m a 40-year-old woman struggling to understand our culture of judgment, criticism and betrayal because my beliefs don’t align with those of others, where good friendships and close families are splintered and have become disposable. I met my best friend in middle school. We were inseparable until recently when she decided to end our friendship. I’m crushed! I thought nothing could ever come between us. We did everything together, and were each other’s maid of honor when we got married. Our families traveled, our kids played sports and we frequently had dinner together. Our differences in philosophies regarding life, raising children, politics and religion were never an issue while growing up. They weren’t a problem because we respected each other and were mostly in alignment with our beliefs, until recently. My friend’s husband is very opinionated, somewhat controlling and strong in his opinions. In time, I’ve witnessed a change in her attitude toward life. Her beliefs have become more aligned with his. We’ve had a few candid discussions over time regarding our beliefs which I thought went well with no drama. Apparently her husband decided it was time for her to end the friendship because we aren’t aligned with his/their thoughts. It’s hard for me to understand why she would so easily throw away years of friendship for something so insignificant. Should I fight for the friendship or let it go? I’m confused.
Nancy, R.
ASK DR. KEITH
by KEITH O’NEILL, PH.D.,C.HT.
Hey Nancy,
You’re not the first to write me regarding this type of situation, and I’ve avoided answering in the past because of the divide caused by political beliefs. I want to make it clear that I’m not going to discuss governmental politics or what I believe. I want to point out that politics play a part in every aspect of our lives. Family, work, government, organized sports and friendship all have a political aspect to them, and they usually fall under the category of “life’s not fair.” We’ve all experienced the loss of a friendship, being passed over for a promotion at work or cut from a team due to politics. Unfortunately, generally speaking in recent years, we’ve lost the ability to accept the beliefs of others without judgment or criticism. We do this without knowing their background or investing the time to ask why they feel the way they do. Negativity is perpetuated and fueled by the media, and we’ve been dumbed down by the internet. We’ve become lazy and don’t do our research before forming opinions and making judgments. In my presentations, I talk about the fact that we get more information in a day than someone in medieval times got in a lifetime, and that was pre-internet. We’re constantly inundated with information, and most don’t take the time to see if it’s true or not before forming opinions, reacting instead of responding. Remember, there are three sides to every story – yours, mine and the truth that lies somewhere in the middle. That’s the challenge – finding the truth. If we don’t do the research, we won’t ever know why or if something’s true or not. The challenging thing is we may never know why, however, a lot of the time, it really doesn’t matter and it is in your best interest to let it go. Your friend has to live with her husband and not you. You had mentioned that he is controlling and opinionated. Maybe he was threatened by your friendship, and wants her for himself. Again, you’ll probably never know. Now’s the time for you to be honest with yourself. Is the relationship worth trying to save? Does it still bring you joy? Remember, you’re not kids anymore. That was then and this is now, so avoid living in the past. You’ve come to a wall in your life – her husband. It’s good to try to go over, under or around that wall, however, sometimes it can’t be moved, sometimes you have to walk away. In this case, walking away is not failure, it’s realizing your own true value.

Fall, also known as autumn, is a season rich with beauty, transformation and fascinating phenomena. As leaves turn vibrant shades of red, orange and yellow, and the air grows crisp, there are many interesting aspects of this season that might surprise you.
The Science Behind Leaf Color Change
One of the most iconic features of fall is the changing color of the leaves. This transformation occurs because of the breakdown of chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for the green color in leaves. As daylight hours shorten and temperatures drop, trees begin to prepare for winter.
Chlorophyll production slows down and eventually stops, revealing the carotenoids and anthocyanins that produce the brilliant yellow, orange and red hues. This process is not just for aesthetic purposes; it’s part of the trees’ survival strategy, allowing them to conserve energy.
The Autumnal Equinox
Fall begins with the autumnal equinox, which will occur September 22nd this year in the Northern Hemisphere. On this day, the sun crosses the celestial equator, and day and night are nearly equal in length. This event marks the official end of summer and the beginning of fall. Equinoxes are rare moments of balance, with only two occurring each year –one in the fall and one in the spring.
Animals Prepare for Winter
As fall progresses, many animals begin preparing for the upcoming winter. Some species, like squirrels, gather and store food to last them through the cold months. Others, like birds, embark on long migrations to warmer climates. Additionally, certain animals, such as bears, enter a state of hibernation, significantly slowing their metabolism to conserve energy.
The Harvest Season
Historically, fall has been a crucial time for agricultural societies as it is the harvest season. Crops like apples, pumpkins and corn are ready to be gathered. Festivals and celebrations, such as Thanksgiving in the United States and the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, have their roots in ancient harvest traditions. These events celebrate the successful gathering of crops and give thanks for the bounty of the land.
The Origin of Halloween Halloween, celebrated on October 31st, has one of its
known origins in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter, a time associated with death. The Celts believed that, on this night, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, and spirits could return to the earth. To ward off these spirits, people would light bonfires and wear costumes. Over time, these traditions evolved into the Halloween festivities we know today.
Fall Foliage Tourism
The stunning display of fall foliage attracts tourists from around the state and US, particularly in our mountain region of North Carolina. “Leaf peeping,” as it is often called abroad, is a popular activity where people travel to witness and photograph the vibrant fall colors. This seasonal tourism can significantly boost local economies.
The Pumpkin Spice Craze
In recent years, fall has become synonymous with the flavor of pumpkin spice. This blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and ginger became wildly popular with the introduction of the Pumpkin Spice Latte by a major coffee chain in 2003. Since then, pumpkin spice-flavored products have exploded in popularity, available in everything from candles to cereal.
A Time for Reflection and Transition
Fall is often seen as a time of reflection and transition. As the year winds down and nature prepares for winter, many people find themselves looking back on the past months and making plans for the future. The season’s inherent beauty and tranquility provide a perfect backdrop for introspection.
Fall is much more than just a transitional period between summer and winter. It is a season rich with natural phenomena, cultural traditions and unique activities that make it a special and intriguing time of the year. From the scientific marvel of changing leaves to the festive spirit of Halloween, fall offers myriad wonders waiting to be explored and appreciated.

MAGICAL PAWS
WHEN THE DREAM JOB FINDS YOU!
by MARTIE EMORY, photography by STEPHANIE WISEMAN PHOTOGRAPHY
After traveling a fairly traditional route through the corporate business world, Brian McIntosh found a life plan silver lining after he suffered a stroke in October of 2023. Learning to make the best of the effects that aphasia now has on his daily life, Brian has discovered the courage, commitment and creativity to realize his dream job!
Once his previous career came to a halt in February of 2024, Brian did some soul searching into what he really loves in life. “I knew loved pets, plants and working with older people,” shares Brian. “So, it turns out this new path is very therapeutic for me!”
He went “live” with his pet sitting service – lovingly named Magical Paws – in April of 2024. As a side, he also offers to water plants for clients while he’s in their homes caring for their fur babies! Most Magical Paws clients are located in Cornelius, Mooresville and Huntersville, and Brian offers frequent walks, pet play dates, overnight stays at his own home or daily visits and one-on-one care in the client’s home. He recently hired an assistant, so he can extend overnight visits at his home or the owner’s home, up to three or four days, if needed.
The truest of pet lovers himself, Brian is the proud owner of two rescue dogs – Albert and Ella – who have offered their stamp of approval on the new business venture!
Knowing that his skill at relating to animals will be a huge factor in the success of his small business, Brian strives to learn as much as possible about prospective clients. The Magical Paws online form allows pet owners to provide basic information and specific pet details, including a microchip status and important questions on their pet’s temperament. While the majority of Magical Paws clients are the canine variety, Brian says approximately 30% are cats, and he is certified in first aid for both dogs and cats through the American Red Cross. He is also bonded and insured.
Secure in the new business venture and happy to provide a much needed service in the Lake Norman area, Brian credits much of his ability to bond with animals so well to his patience and calming voice. In his downtime, he also makes and sells homemade, allnatural dog and cat treats, which you can order online, knowing every morsel is made with much love!
Connecting with others living with the effects of aphasia is another passion for Brian, who is active with two groups – one in Concord, NC, and one based near South Park in Charlotte – who are working to expand the efforts of the Triangle Aphasia Project (TAP) into this area (visit aphasiaproject.org for more information).
“I’m a positive person!” says Brian. “I stay active, I keep pets with me all the time and I love people. I don’t avoid going out in public or groups, as hearing aids have really helped me in loud public places. They help mute the background noise, allowing me to focus on specific words.”
Meeting with others in varying stages of aphasia has been positive, and Brian says he always learns something new. He advises others with those effects to do something new and not be stuck in a routine – and to be honest with people you engage with about your limitations.
“Take notes, write it down or type it,” he says. “Test yourself with something new that’s physically or mentally challenging!”
If you’re a pet owner and looking for the perfect companion for your furry friends when you can’t be home, reach out to Brian at Linkin.bio/magicalpawslkn, and call or text him at 314.568.2453. Follow him on Instagram @magicalpawslkn, and prepare your furry friend to be loved and pampered beyond measure while you’re away!
ONE MAN’S PERSPECTIVE - KUZINS KAMP
CHARLIE SCHULER
One of the greatest things parents can do is have Grandchildren. I know, kids are nice, but grandchildren have a certain advantage
We sailed for many years, and it was FANTASTIC! The children didn’t have any grandchildren. We got into the routine of living on our 42’ Tayana sailboat and taking off whenever we wanted.
spent four months there during three different years. One of the reasons is it that has never been below 50 degrees down there.
Our daughter Cindy gave us our first grandchild, Nicholas. Then the other kids started having children, one per year for six years. And they were all over the place. Two in Loxahatchee, Florida, two in Atlanta, Georgia, and two in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
Not good. We came up with a plan. First, we built a house in River Club where we keep the sailboat. Then we asked all the parents if they would let us have the grandchildren for a week. We could meet them somewhere and make the exchange. There was one important rule. No parents allowed during the week. This gave the parents a vacation and the grandchildren knew that I had the final word. This worked very well. We did this for nine years. The first year we started, Nicholas was 9, Jacob 8, Brooke 7, Cassie 6, Julia
After we got all the grandchildren at our house, they would have a meeting and they would all say what they wanted most during the week, then they would summarize it and present it to us. We would do our best to make it all happen. I am still amazed that the number one thing on their list was MEDIEVAL TIMES, and the boat was number two. MEDIEVAL TIMES was number one for nine years in a
row. In fact, when Nicholas came to visit us later in life, he had his girlfriend with him, and they wanted to go to MEDIEVAL TIMES.
The other thing we had was, NO RULES. We found that among the six of them that they would police themselves, and it worked great. They would entertain themselves. For example, they would play Monopoly all night long. We would go to bed, and they
Tanner, being the youngest, was proficient in skateboarding. He was very good, and he added this to the list of things to do during the week. The problem was that he was the only one wanting to do this activity. No one would support him. So, he pranced to his room, packed his bag and went into the garage. Nothing happened so he walked back to his room and acted like nothing happened. Marianne did work it out, so he did get time in the
One year we took all six of them to Bald Head Island by boat. They had a ball, and we spent the night there at the marina. There were three girls in the forward bunk, three boys in the aft bunk, and Marianne and I on the table that converted to a bunk in the galley. (Kitchen) There are no cars on Bald Head Island except work vehicles. Everything was too far for walking, so we rented a golf cart. They loved it. We went all over the Island including the Lighthouse. Of course, they all had to climb to the top. We did many things and they loved them all. They really enjoyed being together and the many “first” things we did together.
One of the most important things we did was to make a book with pictures of all the activities for each one of the grandchildren. This was theirs and they could share with their parents and friends and relive the activities. We made a copy for ourselves as well.
Please think about this and make it work if you can. The joy is endless. They are all grown now and working. Two are Police officers, four have graduated from college and all are working and healthy. Thank you, Lord.
ENO RIVER STATE PARK
by ROBIN SHUPE KELLER
In the heart of the Piedmont region of North Carolina, Eno River State Park offers a tranquil retreat for nature enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers. Stretching across 4,319 acres, the park boasts a diverse array of landscapes, from lush forests to meandering rivers. With its rich history, varied recreational opportunities and unique natural features, Eno River State Park is a cherished destination for visitors seeking both relaxation and adventure.
BRIEF HISTORY
Eno River State Park’s history is intertwined with the cultural and natural heritage of the region. The area was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Eno, Shakori and Occoneechee, who relied on the river for sustenance and transportation. European settlers arrived in the 1700s, establishing mills and farms along the river. The park itself was established in 1972 after local conservationists, alarmed by the threat of urban development, successfully campaigned to preserve the area. Today, the park stands to validate their efforts, protecting the river and surrounding landscapes for future generations.
RECREATION
Eno River State Park offers a wide range of recreational activities that cater to all interests and skill levels. Hiking enthusiasts can explore more than 24 miles of trails that wind through the park’s
diverse terrains. Popular routes include the Buckquarter Creek Trail, which offers scenic views of the river, and the Cox Mountain Trail, known for its challenging terrain and rewarding vistas. The park’s trails provide opportunities for wildlife observation, photography and immersion in nature.
For those who prefer water-based activities, the Eno River is ideal for canoeing and kayaking. The gentle currents and shallow waters make it accessible for paddlers of all ages. Fishing is another favorite pastime, with the river home to various species such as bass, catfish and sunfish. Anglers can enjoy a peaceful day by the water, casting their lines and soaking in the serene surroundings.
Picnicking is a popular activity at Eno River State Park, with numerous picnic areas equipped with tables and grills. Families and groups can enjoy a leisurely meal while surrounded by nature. The park also offers several campgrounds, providing a rustic camping experience for those looking to extend their stay. Campsites are equipped with basic amenities, and some sites are situated along the river, offering a scenic backdrop for campers.
UNIQUE FEATURES
One of the park’s most unique features is its abundance of natural and cultural landmarks. The remnants of historic mills, such as the Holden Mill and Cabe Mill,
offer a glimpse into the area’s industrial past. These sites, now engulfed by nature, serve as poignant reminders of the region’s history and the enduring power of the natural world.
The park is also home to a variety of plant and animal species, making it a biodiversity hotspot. Spring and summer bring vibrant wildflower blooms, while the fall season paints the park in hues of red, orange and yellow. Birdwatchers can spot numerous species, including the colorful Prothonotary Warbler and the majestic Great Blue Heron.
AT THE END OF THE DAY
Eno River State Park is a sanctuary for nature lovers and history buffs alike. Its rich history, diverse recreational offerings and unique natural features make it a must-visit destination in North Carolina. Whether you’re hiking through the forest, paddling down the river or simply enjoying a picnic by the water, the park offers an opportunity to connect with nature and appreciate the beauty and tranquility of the Eno River. At the end of the day, visitors leave with a sense of peace and a deeper appreciation for this remarkable natural haven.
