Texas Direct Auto Teams Up with the Sugar Land Skeeters Again in 2015 Since their inaugural season in 2012, the Sugar Land Skeeters have captured the hearts of Sugar Land residents and baseball-lovers throughout the Greater Houston area. In turn, the organization has fostered partnerships with pillars of the Fort Bend county community for years to come. One such pairing is with Stafford-based Texas Direct Auto, the world’s largest independent auto dealership, who is proud to team up with the Skeeters again for the fourth consecutive year. Our goal? To help make the 2015 season the best yet. “Our theme for the 2015 season is a #SaLute2fans,” said Chris Jones, General Manager of the Sugar Land Skeeters. “Partners like Texas Direct Auto are ideal for our organization, because they understand the value of a loyal fan, and can help us spread our message of ‘Thanks’ into the communities we both serve.” As a founding sponsor, Texas Direct Auto has a noticeable presence at the Constellation Field. The Texas Direct Auto message is featured prominently along the Skeeters bullpen and inside the “Buzz Shop,” where every purchase of $50 or more in Skeeters merchandise earns fans a free t-shirt. In addition to sponsoring two Skeeters Entitlement games, Texas Direct Auto will have some fun freebies to giveaway to all fans during several Skeeters home Games. You can’t miss the Texas Direct Auto fully-customized bullpen cart, shaped like a vintage baseball, that they donated in 2012. Skeeters fans will want to mark their calendars for Entitlement games hosted by Texas Direct Auto this year. On Saturday, May 16th, Texas Direct Auto will give away the fourth edition of their coveted, collectible youth jerseys to the first 2,000 attendees. Don’t forget to bring the whole family out on June 27, 2015 for Bark in the Park, another special event presented by Texas Direct Auto. Texas Direct Auto’s Director of New Business Development, Jessica DeMarr, is looking forward to another great season in 2015, saying, “Texas Direct Auto is proud to be a founding partner for our 4th consecutive year. It is a joy to watch fans of all ages cheer on the Skeeters. Win or lose it’s about having fun-GO SKEETERS!” For more information visit www.sugarlandskeeters.com.
Editor’s Preview Welcoming a new hospital Michael Sudhalter Editor
S
pring is in the air, and the bluebonnets are in bloom! And we’re only a few days away from watching the Sugar Land Skeeters contend for an Atlantic League Championship in its fourth season as a franchise. The Fort Bend-Katy Business Journal prides itself on sharing the news of new businesses in the area, and you can find many of them on page 30 of this month’s edition. If you know of a business or business owner that you’d like us to feature, please send an e-mail to editor@fortbendstar.com. This month, contributing writer Subhrata Barot wrote an interesting story about Westpark Springs Hospital, a new 72-bed hospital in the Richmond area that treats those who are battling emotional and mental health issues and addiction. It’s important to have such hospitals operating as our county’s exponential growth continues. Westpark Springs CEO told The Business Journal that prior to the hospital’s opening, patients had to travel to Houston in order to receive similar care and treatment. “We’ve brought exceptionally great care to Fort Bend County. We are meeting the mental health needs of the community that haven’t been met before.” The hospital currently provides in patient and outpatient services to adults and will soon be treating adolescents. Barot and I toured Westpark Springs in March and were thoroughly impressed with the professional and dedication of the staff members. Sincerely, Michael

Sugar Land Marriott Town Square Hotel named tops in Texas, one of world’s best for guest satisfaction
S
ugar Land Marriott Town Square has earned top honors from the Marriott brand, earning a ranking as the brand’s top full-service Marriott hotel in Texas, third in the United States and fifth among Marriott’s 358 hotels worldwide in overall guest satisfaction. The prestigious ranking was based on thousands of guest satisfaction surveys completed in 2014 by guests of Sugar Land Marriott Town Square. Guests ranked the hotel in check-in/-check out efficiency, cleanliness of room, courtesy of housekeeping staff, decór, food and beverage and overall experience, among a number of categories. “When it comes to our guests, we’re all about a culture of ‘yes,’” says Jeffrey Obomeghie, general manager of the 300-room Sugar Land Marriott Town Square. The hotel also received a 2014 Excellence in Quality Award from Remington Hotels, which manages the property. In addition, seven of the hotel’s associates were honored in 2014 with Marriott Spirit to Serve Awards, recognizing

those who carry out exceptional guest service. “We make it a point to go above and beyond what the guest expects,” he adds. “Very simply, at our hotel the ‘unexpected’ is the ‘expected.’” The award-winning hotel, situated in the heart of the vibrant Sugar Land Town Square at U.S. 59 and Highway 6, also completed a property-wide renovation in 2014, creating a sophisticated, new look for its guestrooms, meeting and event spaces, lobby and public corridors. The landmark property is popular with groups, individual business travelers and weekend leisure guests attending weddings and special events, according to Obomeghie, who says guests enjoy the hotel’s location within the shopping, dining and entertainment venues of Sugar Land Town Square. “Once they arrive, guests never have to get back in their car,” he says. “They love having everything right outside our door.” Looking forward, Obomeghie anticipates concerts at Sugar Land’s new performing arts center, about two miles from the hotel, will be a big draw for the area. He says the hotel will

Are you ready for every day to be Saturday?
A
re you ready to retire? If you are in your 50s, 60s, or 70s and still working, I’d bet that you think about this often. If you’re having trouble deciding, imagine what you’d most like to do on a Saturday morning. If the immediate answer is something other than work, then maybe you should consider retiring. One of my mentors often tells me that if I wouldn’t do something on a Saturday morning, then I shouldn’t waste time doing it any other day. So, think about your Saturday morning. Would you still delegate time on Saturday morning to do what you do every day? If the answer is no, then maybe we should start getting you ready for retirement. Once you’ve determined that it is time to retire (or that it will be in the next few years), the next question to ask yourself is what does retirement look like to me? Many people find the thought of retirement scary or overwhelming because they see it as an end, rather than a beginning. Instead of focusing on what you’d be leaving behind, why not focus on what’s to come? What is it that you enjoy doing on Saturday? How would you like to do it more often? Many of our clients have already answered these questions. And, I can tell you that “retirement” is quite creative! For some clients, it means starting a business or philanthropy, or volunteering more at church. For others, it means more time with the grandkids. Yet other clients find the time to travel and see the world. So, what is your vision of retirement?
Once you take a hard look at whatever retirement looks like to you, then we can look at your retirement income to determine how to make this a reality. Wouldn’t you agree that it is important that your financial advisor knows what you want your retirement to look like so that they can develop a retirement income financial plan that fits with your goal? Another question that you may want to ask yourself is what kind of legacy do you want to leave behind? My April R. Roberts, J.D. grandfather owned a dry cleaners that I worked in from age 12-24. Looking back, I think that he just wanted company on those hot summer days, but I thank him every day for teaching me how to work. I also fondly remember betting $1 on the Super Bowl every year. I was proud that I had the winning record. This is my legacy from my Paw Paw. My grandmother’s legacy was quite different. My grandfather developed Leukemia and died before he had the option to retire (in continued on page 8

Fort Bend County Commissioners Court, along with Fort Bend Seniors celebrated the Ground Breaking of the Bud O’Shieles Community Center renovation and expansion. all honesty, I doubt he ever would have retired because there wasn’t a thought in his head to do so). Since my Granny never worked and my Paw Paw was a business owner, this could have been disastrous for her financially. Luckily, he listened to my dad before getting sick, put together an estate plan and bought a substantial life insurance policy. Due to this planning, my family was able to take over the dry cleaners that my grandmother could not have run, and she moved into a brand new assisted living home and enjoyed herself. Although she missed my grandfather every day the rest of her life, having sufficient assets to live comfortably ensured that she only kept the happy memories. While it may be hard for you to imagine no longer earning an income, there are many ways to still impact the world as a retiree. Let’s just paint a clear picture of what you want and make it happen. What does Saturday look like for you, your spouse and your loved ones? Let’s start making memories for our loved ones to cherish and make a solid plan to ensure that they are always taken care of. Fort Bend Communities Mark The Johnson Development Corp.’s 40th Year with Outdoor Art Sculptures
F
ort Bend master-planned communities of Cross Creek Ranch, Imperial, Riverstone, and Sienna Plantation will commemorate The Johnson Development Corp.’s 40th year as one of the nation’s preeminent land developers by hosting displays of large, outdoor metal art sculptures by award-winning sculptor Dale Rogers of Haverhill, Massachusetts. “In recognition of Johnson Development’s 40th year, we set out to create an inspiring, visual element for our communities which families can enjoy for years to come,” notes Doug Goff, the company’s Chief Operating Officer. “Four People,” a large sculpture of four figures holding hands with outstretched arms, will be unveiled as permanent outdoor art in Riverstone on April 4; in Cross Creek Ranch during Fest of Tails and in Imperial at The Grand Wine & Food Affair’s Sip & Stroll on April 11; and on April 18 in Sienna Plantation during its Canine Carnival.

Harvest Green, Johnson Development’s newest Fort Bend masterplanned community, will unveil its “Four People” sculpture at its September grand opening. “The exhibit is both uplifting and uniting,” says Rogers of the 7 x 15foot sculpture made of Cor-Ten steel. “It’s just one of those pieces you look at and feel good about.” Goff adds, “The ‘Four People’ sculpture is open to interpretation. It can be parents and children or four friends. It’s a fun, uplifting piece.” Two, large-scale metal sculptures, “Flight” and “The Big Dog Show,” also will be installed as temporary exhibits in Imperial, Sienna Plantation, Riverstone and Cross Creek Ranch. “Flight,” winner of a 2012 ArtPrize Urban Space Juried Award, will appear in Riverstone, April 1 – 15, and Cross Creek Ranch, April 15 30. The exhibit reflects a collection of large-scale, stainless-steel birds with 12-foot wing spans displayed 12-15 feet off the ground. “The Big Dog Show” will appear in Imperial, Sugar Land’s newest master-planned community, April 1 – 15 and Sienna Plantation, April 15 - 30. Rogers’ signature piece is a collection of 20, free-standing dogs made of a weathered, Cor-Ten steel. The dogs stand eight feet tall and ten feet wide. “People relate to the simplicity of ‘Flight’ and bond very quickly to ‘The Big Dog Show,’” notes Rogers, who supervised the 1,900-mile move of the large-scale metal structures from Haverhill, about 35 miles north of Boston, to Houston. The Johnson Development Corp. marks its 40th year as the developer of three of the nation’s top-selling master-planned communities for new home sales in 2014, according to John Burns Real Estate Consulting. This marks the second consecutive year the Houston-based company has landed more communities on the list than any other developer in the nation. Westin Homes is one of three builders that have opened models in the Trails of Katy, a new community less than a mile from Interstate 10.
All three builders have homes under construction. “Trails of Katy has much to offer buyers, with a convenient location just south of Interstate 10 and schools in the highly acclaimed Katy Independent School District,” said Tanya Rizzo, director of sales for Pulte Homes’ Houston division. Planned amenities in the Trails of Katy, located near Interstate 10 between FM 1463 and Pederson Road, include a resort-style pool with a splash pad, a recreation center, tennis courts and miles of walking trails. hea Homes, which recently entered the Texas market, will make its Fort Bend County debut this spring in the Village of Sawmill Lake, Sienna Plantation’s newest village. Joining Shea Homes in Sienna for the first time is Westin Homes, another award-winning builder, who is very active in several Johnson Development communities throughout the Houston area. Shea Homes, the nation’s second-largest privately owned home builder, will open a new model home in April and offer new homes on 35 home sites starting in the high $300’s. “We’re thrilled to make Village of Sawmill Lake our first Fort Bend community,” said Keith Luechtefeld, division president for Shea Homes Houston. “Sienna Plantation has been synonymous with quality and we’re certainly looking forward to carrying on that tradition.” Luechtefeld adds Shea Homes will offer 14, two-story plans on 65’ home sites with three elevation options – Hill Country, Texas Traditional and Tuscan – and several builder options new to the market. Shea Homes’ buyers can choose from optional features new to the market including stackable sliding glass panels, which open the spacious great room and dining space into a gorgeous, wrap-around porch with serving bar creating continuous indoor and outdoor entertainment space. Another newcomer to Sienna Plantation, longtime Houston-area builder Westin Homes, has built sophisticated, high-quality luxury homes in some of Houston’s most desirable communities since 1994. Westin Homes will offer new homes on 60-foot home sites along with Meritage Homes; both opening new model homes this spring. “We are delighted to be among the select group of home builders invited to participate in the next phase of Sienna Plantation, one of the finest and most successful master-planned communities in Texas,” says Kyle Davison, division president, Westin Homes. Davison adds Westin Homes will offer floor plans from 2,000 – 3,600 square feet priced in the mid-to-upper $300’s. “Our interest list for prospective buyers is growing by the day,” he adds. Named after the historic sawmills which operated on the property in the mid 1800’s, the Village of Sawmill Lake will offer 500 home sites along with a new Fort Bend ISD elementary and middle school scheduled to open in 2017. A new amenity center is planned to open in 2016 along the banks of Sawmill Lake in the northeast corner of the village. Riverstone names top 2014 Realtors
W
ith more than 700 new homes sold in Riverstone last year, the Realtors who had the most sales in the Fort Bend development all saw doubledigit sales by the close of 2014. Kunal Seth with RE/MAX Fine Properties was the top-selling Realtor in Riverstone in 2014, selling 25 new homes throughout the year. Following close behind was JoJo Tharayil with Excel Realty Co., who posted 21 sales in Riverstone during 2014. Stanley Mani of Stanley John, LLC, sold 20 new homes in Riverstone last year and Babu Joseph with Philip Abraham and Company was the development’s fourth-ranked Realtor, with 17 new-home sales in 2014. “Realtors understand the perfect package that Riverstone offers buyers, with a prime Fort Bend location, elegant homes, top schools and impressive amenities,” said Trey Reichert, vice president and general manager of Riverstone. “Realtors were involved with
more than 80 percent of the new-home sales in Riverstone last year and are an integral part of our record-breaking success.” Riverstone is the top-selling masterplanned community in Texas for a second consecutive year. In addition, the development is ranked No. 4 among the nation’s top-selling communities by two independent research firms, John Burns Real Estate Consulting and Robert Charles Lesser & Co. (RCLCO). “Riverstone is the best community in Texas,” said Seth. “The excellent amenities, great schools and cultural diversity make this community feel engaged, functional and beautiful. These are just some of the reasons why our clients love to live in Riverstone.” Nineteen builders offer designs in Riverstone, with prices from the $300,000s to the millions. Residents enjoy highly regarded Fort Bend schools and a prime location on Highway 6 between Highway 59 and the Fort Bend Parkway. Riverstone also offers an array of amenities, including three

ulshear has a current population of less than 2,000, so you would not expect production by a local real estate Agent to exceed those from Texas’s biggest cities. Yet, Mike Roller was recently recognized by RE/MAX as doing just that by earning the Number 3 spot in all of Texas. Mike, Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Realty West, moved to the Fulshear area in 1989. “At that time, there was almost nothing here, not even a stop light or a gas station,” Mike stated. It was an extremely difficult market and he attributes his results today for the effort and ingenuity it required to sell property back 25-years ago. Today, Fulshear is one of the fastest growing areas in Houston. This growth helped Roller to also receive the prestigious Diamond Award, which is the highest production award for RE/MAX. for Agents today. For Buyers, it is helping them “understand the current market, trends and weighing a list of wants and needs.” Perhaps paramount is identifying the different lifestyles that each home and community offers. For Sellers, Roller attributes his success by investing in the resources necessary to present homes to their highest potential. To do so, he employs professional stagers and has a warehouse full of accessories and staging items. He uses professional photography, but also has 2-drones to get photos that will better catch the eye of Buyers. As another value added service, Mike has a crew ready to handle any repairs or updating that might be needed. “We never look at how we can sell more property than someone else, rather we are laser focused on doing the best we can for the Clients we have.” By doing this, the results will naturally come. And, it looks like they do. For more details, please visit RE/MAX Realty West’s website, www.movewest.net. April 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal

Visit to Texas capitol gives student leaders new perspective on state government
W
hat better way to learn about Leadership in Government than to meet face-to-face with Texas legislators. That’s exactly what cohorts of Fort Bend ISD’s Student Leadership 101 Program recently did during a field trip to Austin. Sponsored by FBISD’s Board of Trustees, and the first in the program’s history, the trip allowed the students to meet with various state representatives and senators during a day-long excursion to the State Capitol. Accompanying the students were Board President Grayle James and Board Members Jason Burdine, KP George and Kristin Tassin. Dr. Charles Dupre, Superintendent of Schools, and Dr. Christie Whitbeck, Deputy Superintendent, also joined the students in Austin. When greeting the students at the State Capitol, Dr. Dupre reminded them of the purpose of the trip. “You’re already familiar with our School Board, which is a form of government at the District level,” said Superintendent Dupre. “It’s equally important for you to see all levels of government and become familiar with those who make state laws regarding education.” “You’ll find that the School Board operates similar to the House of Representatives and Senators,” said Board Member Jason Burdine. “We set a vision for the District and entrust the Superintendent to carry out that vision. We also approve policy to govern schools, all on a volunteer basis.” The students welcomed State Representatives Rick Miller (District 26), Phil Stephenson (District 85), Dr. Alma Allen (District 131), John Zerwas (District 28), Ron Reynolds (District 27) and Senator Rodney Ellis (District 13) for discussions on the 84th Texas Legislature. The legislators discussed their roles in government, the history of the State Capitol building, how bills become laws, and other aspects of leadership in government. State Representative Rick Miller welcomed the group to “the People’s House” and explained how the legislature meets every odd year for 140 days to establish and decide on a state budget for the next two years. He mentioned that during “off season” legislators

meet with constituents in their districts to discuss key issues that will be brought to legislation. The cohorts were also reminded of their civic duty. Representative Alma Allen, who is in her 11th year of serving on the House of Representatives, encouraged the students to be involved in politics. “Make sure you become registered voters,” she said, “and vote in every political race, not just the presidential race.” The legislators also offered the students advice in preparing for life beyond high school. Representative Phil Stephenson encouraged the students to stay focused on education. “The purpose of education is to train you to someday fill the shoes of people like me,” he said. He spoke of his career as a Certified Public Account and of how his career allows him to live the American dream. He encouraged the students to stay focused on their goals and decide their purpose in life. Representative Ron Reynolds added, “With faith, determination and hard work, there isn’t anything you can’t accomplish.” A product of Fort Bend ISD, Reynolds also reminded the students that they have options after graduating high school. “Not everyone goes to college,” he said, “Some of you will choose to go to trade April 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
school or get a job right away. That’s why we put House Bill 5 in place to give you more options.” Following their meeting with the legislators, the cohorts joined the Board members and program facilitators for lunch at the Headliners Club where they had the opportunity to hear from Ben De Leon, attorney and 2009 National Big Brother of the Year. De Leon shared his professional and educational backgrounds and spoke of the importance of education. “You may come across teachers who have reasons why you can’t do something,” said De Leon. “No one can take away what you know. You are future leaders of our society, and we need and want you to succeed.” To conclude their visit, the students received a tour of the State Capitol and the Capitol Visitors Center, where they completed a scavenger hunt and viewed a video of the history of the State Capitol. “This leadership session really opened my eyes to seeing how much legislators actually care about students and the quality of our education,” said Jesus Fonseca of Travis High School. “I’ve gained a new perspective on politics.”

Westpark Springs Hospital delivers innovative & evidence-base treatment in Fort Bend FORT BEND
KATY
THE BUSINESS LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE
JOURNAL
COVER STORY By Subhrata Barot
N
estled at Grand Parkway and West Park toll road, the new 72-bed Westpark Springs Hospital is designed to be a medical refuge for those who are battling emotional and mental health issues, and addiction. The state-of-the-art behavioral and psychiatric care facility is the only one of its kind in Fort Bend County that offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services to adults (and soon adolescents). Since opening in October, the hospital has served over 200 patients. Westpark Springs utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to providing care. The clinical teams consist of psychiatrists, family medicine physicians, registered nurses, social workers and licensed professional counselors. “We did a lot of research before choosing Richmond as our first Houston-area location,” said Jamie Freels, director of business development. “We looked at population growth, and the amount of patients in the area that are already receiving psychiatric services in other counties. We also looked at statistics we obtained through emergency departments and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Chief Executive Officer Daniel Aranda agreed that there is a need for psychiatric services in Fort Bend County. “Patients that live in Fort Bend County have to travel to Houston to receive care,” Aranda said. “There is a need here and it’s also very convenient for residents. importantly, we’ve brought exceptionally great care to Fort Bend County. We are meeting the mental health needs of the community that haven’t been met before.” The hospital provides a variety of inpatient and outpatient services for patients who need either mental health or addiction care. The Inpatient Treatment Program offers a 24-hour safe and secure on-site environment. Patients receive comprehensive assessments, psychiatric and rehabilitation care. Most patients stay anywhere between 8 and 21 days under the care of the professionals at

Westpark Springs. The inpatient treatment option gives patients the opportunity to connect with physicians, nurses and therapists directly. The Partial Hospitalization Program provides structured in-house therapy five days a week. Patients are offered group therapy and medication management by a psychiatrist. This program gives patients the autonomy to live at home but spend five to six hours at the hospital for treatment. Depending on the assessment given to the patient, the Intensive Outpatient Program is also an option for patients who want in-house structure while being treated but would still like the choice of living at home. Patients will typically spend at least nine

hours a week in the program. The treatment model is evidence-based and a combination of enhancement, reality, cognitive behavioral and dialectical therapies. For individuals experiencing both mental and health and addiction problems concurrently, the hospital had the Integrated Co-Occurring Disorders Program. This approach is meant to treat both disorders at once. The hospital also provides support to family members as well as alumni of the hospital. Family members of patients can participate in educational and support programs to increase their understanding of addiction, mental illness and mental health. In addition, this helps them learn more about their roles in the recovery process. Alumni of Westpark Springs treatment programs have the option to continue their recovery process with support groups. Along with the general levels of care, all patients have the ability to test the innovative therapies that Westpark Springs has to offer. Aranda said that the therapies are not designed to be a cure-all, but therapies give patients an opportunity to experience something that might be beneficial to their treatment.
“We provide different therapies for our patients,” said Cassie Richter, physician liaison. “In addition to their programming, our patients have access to yoga, tai chi, art and music therapies. We also have an in-house gym that they are allowed to utilize under supervision.” A particular therapy that is very popular with patients at the hospital is pet therapy. “We get a lot of feedback from patients regarding the different therapies we offer,” Freels said. “Patients feel very comfortable with the pets and they feel

like they can open up and talk.” Within the next few months, the hospital will expand their services to the adolescent population. “Our next major goal for 2015 is to launch our adolescent services,” Aranda said. “We just opened up our second adult unit in February and should have adolescent services available within the next few months. We will be able to house 24 beds.” Continues...
23
The main difference between adolescent and adult method of care will be that the programming will be age specific. Both patient types will receive the same therapies but adolescents be geared more toward the adolescent needs. The hospital also does its best to accommodate patients’ day-to-day needs. For example, the hospital has a dietician on call for patients who may have certain food restrictions. In addition, the cafeteria is able to provide special needs meals including diabetic, gluten free or mechanical soft diets. To give the patients a sense of community and to let them maintain their independence, the hospital has communal areas as well as a laundry room for the patients to use. “Our goal is to make them feel productive and active,” Richter said. “We offer different amenities so that they can get healthy in mind, body and spirit. A lot of that comes from letting them do things for themselves and keeping them independent.” The over 52,000-square-foot hospital has been designed with the patient care and comfort in mind. “Other facilities in Houston are nice, but they are older and not as well maintained or state-of-the-art,” Aranda said. “When I say state-of-the-art, I’m talking about the environment that sets the tone for the respect, dignity and self-worth of our patients.”

Aranda also added that the facility has many of the newest safety and security features in design and construction of psychiatric facilities. Those kinds of features not only look good and make the patient feel like they are in a good place, but they serve a practical purpose. “Some of the psychiatric treatment facilities have become pretty regimented and not very attractive inside or outside,” Aranda said. “I think those places provide good care but the environment should also be meaningful and respectful to the patient.” Westpark Springs employees know that the services they provide are meaningful and respectful to the patient because thy are engaged in patient satisfaction. “It’s very important to us to make sure that people feel like they’re getting good care in a good environment,” Aranda said. “We are always looking to do better for our patients. We have a large group of employees who have come from different areas and hospitals, with various levels of experience, and we’re all learning to row in the same direction.” This is not the end for Westpark Springs parent company Springstone, Inc. The company has two other Texas facilities – near Dallas and Austin and several other facilities around the nation. Two more hospitals are set to open outside of the state of Texas this year and one will be opening up in The Woodlands within 18 months.

Houston Rockets donate $50,000 to HCC Foundation for student scholarships
The partnership between Houston Community College and the Houston Rockets took center court at Toyota Center during the Rockets/Pistons game when the home team presented the HCC Foundation with a $50,000 check for student scholarships. The Clutch City Foundation Scholarship is awarded to students who are enrolled in a minimum of six hours of coursework per semester at HCC and maintain a minimum 2.0 G.P.A. Each student is eligible to receive $1,000 for tuition, fees and books. “At a time when students are seeking degrees or certifications in STEM studies, the Rockets’ support for HCC students couldn’t have been more timely,” said Mary Williams, first vice president of HCC Foundation Board. HCC, the Rockets, NASA and Space Center Houston have teamed up for “Rockets Science”, a STEM based program to get middle school students excited about careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. “Receiving $50,000 for scholarships from the Rockets Clutch City Foundation is fabulous for our students,” said Carme Williams, executive director, HCC Foundation. “Tad Brown is making a wonderful investment in the lives of many Houstonians!” For more information on the Clutch City Foundation Scholarship, visit hccsfoundation.org.

Fort Bend County companies receive Texas Mutual’s top honor for workplace safety Today, Texas Mutual Insurance Company announced that three employers in Fort Bend County have been awarded the company’s top honor for workplace safety. Texas Mutual, the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance, recognized these companies for their dedication to workplace safety. Honorees from Fort Bend County include: • Durwood Greene Construction Company • NEC Construction Ltd. • Straus Systems Inc. To qualify for this honor, a company must demonstrate its commitment to work-
place safety by implementing an exemplary safety program and controlling workers’ compensation losses. “These awards recognize companies that put an emphasis on workplace safety and the well-being of their employees,” Richard Gergasko, president and chief executive officer of Texas Mutual Insurance Company, said. “Texas Mutual is more than a workers’ compensation provider. One of our top priorities is to educate employers about workplace safety. safety awards to policyholders throughout the state who have exemplary safety records and exceptional safety programs. Austin-based Texas Mutual Insurance Company, a policyholder-owned company, is the state’s leading provider of workers’ compensation insurance.
