There’s no place like home in a Johnson Development community

hey may be master-planned communities, but their size and familiarity make them seem like sister cities to our Fort Bend communities. Places like Sienna Plantation, Cross Creek Ranch and Riverstone are as much a part of Fort Bend County as Sugar Land, Missouri City and Stafford. find that many of today’s retirees have been taught that taxes will be low or negligible in retirement, the idea being that when you retire you drop into a lower tax bracket. Unfortunately that isn’t the case for many of my clients, so it’s important that we plan for taxes – even if you think you will be in a lower tax bracket. Many sources of retirement income have tax consequences. For some retirees, social security benefits are income tax free. With that said, there are certain thresholds that may cause some of your benefit to be taxed. For instance, up to 50% of your social security benefit may be taxed if your income falls between $25,000 and $34,000 for single filers, and $32,000 to $44,000 for joint filers. Up to 85% may be taxed if you make more than $34,000 for single filers and $44,000 for joint filers. 401(k) and IRA accounts are another source of income for retirees. What many don’t realize though is that any withdrawals

from a 401(k) or IRA account are fully income taxable, so it’s imperative that you have a plan for how to take withdrawals. Income or withdrawals from annuities can also affect your taxes. With an annuity that’s funded by pre-tax dollars, the income/ withdrawals are fully income taxable. If an annuity was purchased with after-tax dollars (but is not a Roth), then only the growth is taxable. Lastly, a 10% IRS penalty may be applied if you decide to take a withdrawal from an annuity before the age of 59 ½. Money paid as taxes to the government is never seen again by you or your family, so it’s important to be tax efficient in retirement. ohnson Development Corp. recently announced the promotion of Doug Goff and Michael J. Smith to co-presidents of the company, a milestone achievement for two key members of the management team who have helped establish Johnson as the nation’s preeminent residential and commercial land development company. Mr. Goff, 21 years with Johnson, most recently served as the company’s chief operating officer while Smith, 17 years with Johnson, served as its senior vice president and director of land development. In their new roles, Mr. Goff will be responsible for the Company’s overall residential sales and marketing strategy and will oversee commercial development initiatives while Mr. Smith will lead general land development and corporate operations. Together, both Messrs. Goff and Smith will be responsible for relationship management and negotiations with Johnson’s strong stable of homebuilder partners. Larry D. At Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, technology helps ‘take the weight off’ so patients can participate in physical therapy

hysical therapy patients at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital have access to a unique unweighting system that enables them to exercise without putting pressure on injured and recovering joints. The PneuWeight unloading system is an innovative pneumatic tool that lifts and supports a patient’s body weight to reduce or eliminate pain. Without the pain associated with weight-bearing, patients can walk, run and do other exercises earlier in the rehabilitation process — dramatically shortening their recovery times. Although PneuWeight system was developed more than 25 years ago for a professional basketball team, they remain a rare sight in many physical therapy clinics. At Houston Methodist Sugar Land, however, the system is in constant use. “The PneuWeight is an invaluable asset for us here, and it makes a big difference in the treatment of many of our patients,” said Dan Kershner, a Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital physical therapist. “PneuWeight enables us to unload a patient’s body weight using a comfortable harness. We can adjust how much weight is unloaded, and add more weight as the patient progresses. We usually unload for treadmill work, but we have the option to remove the treadmill to work on other types of weight bearing exercises.” One recent patient, recovering from multiple injuries after being hit by a car, was mostly wheelchair-bound when he first arrived for physical therapy. Standing was difficult, and he could only walk a few steps at a time, with a significant limp. “He couldn’t put any weight at all on his left leg,” recalled Kershner.

Using PneuWeight, however, the patient was able to begin walking on the treadmill; at first, only 100 steps or so before he would tire. But he quickly rebuilt his strength and stamina and began walking for five minutes, then 10, then longer. As his pain lessened, the physical therapy staff decreased the system’s lift and increased the amount of weight the patient was bearing on his own. Today, he no longer needs a wheelchair or even a cane, and his limp has significantly improved. “Without PneuWeight, he would not have been able to tolerate walking activity in physical therapy for many more weeks, and his recovery would have been much, much slower,” said Kershner. The PneuWeight is also valuable in helping patients who have balance issues or patients who struggle with balance due to neurologic disorders like the effects of a stroke. “The harness provides the necessary stability and gives patients the confidence

to exercise without the fear of falling,” said Kiran Patel, a Houston Methodist Sugar Land physical therapist assistant. That confidence can play a key role in encouraging patients to keep working hard at their therapy. “It’s not unusual for patients to get discouraged at what they perceive to be a lack of progress, even though they are improving,” said Patel. “That’s especially true if they are recovering from a traumatic injury, which typically requires a long period of rehabilitation. The PneuWeight enables us to get patients up and moving early; it helps restore confidence and motivates patients to keep working hard. Fort Bend Parkway toll road overpass ribbon-cutting held

ounty and City officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony March 6 to celebrate the completion of the Fort Bend Parkway Toll Road overpass. The 1.2-mile project is the final segment of the approximate 10 miles from Sienna

Parkway to U.S. 90A/South Main. Of that, 7.5 miles are within the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority boundaries (from Sienna Parkway to Sam Houston Tollway) and 2.5 miles are located inside the boundaries of the Harris County Toll Road Authority (from Sam Houston Tollway to U.S. 90A/South Main). There is no

additional toll required to use the bridge/ overpass. “This overpass is the missing link we’ve needed to make the Parkway a real value for the residents of Sienna Plantation. Now traffic can flow to and from Loop 610 in Houston without a controlled intersection,” Fort Bend County Judge Bob Hebert said.

this next step with the organization and for this position to be filled by Angie,” said Gary Tuma, CPC President. “As the conservancy has now surpassed $1 million in funding received for the park, we needed a leader who will be able to build upon the small volunteer board’s efforts.” Wierzbicki’s background uniquely positions her for this role. With a master’s degree in recreation, park and tourism administration, focusing on community development and nature-based tourism, and almost 10 years of experience in leadership positions at nonprofits, Wierzbicki plans to advance the conservancy’s fundraising outcomes, build on the relationship between the conservancy and the City of Sugar Land, and guide park projects per the board’s goals. “I am humbled and honored to serve the conservancy and the community in this capacity,” Wierzbicki shared. “We are poised to polish this natural jewel, the park, for Sugar Land residents and the greater Fort Bend and Houston communities, not

Sustainable farm, Loam Agronomics, opens in Richmond

he Edible Group, the parent company that owns Edible Earth Resources, Agmenity and Farmstead, have begun planting and developing its 288-acre sustainable farm in Richmond: Loam Agronomics. This farm is one of the largest farms of its kind in the Houston-area. Right now, the farm is focused on production for its CSA program. In the future, the land will be used to host activities, events and educational programming. On the farm, the team is pushing themselves to create net gains for the earth and for the community. TSTC marks milestone on second building at Fort Bend campus

exas State Technical College and Bartlett Cocke General Contractors celebrated a project milestone for the college’s second building on TSTC’s Fort Bend County campus with a “topping out” ceremony Wednesday, Feb. 22. A long-standing tradition in the construction industry, a topping out ceremony marks the placement of the last structural beam and celebrates the progress and timely construction of a major project. “A topping out ceremony is very important in the construction process, because it gives us a point in the progression to pause and celebrate that a lot of people have come together to make a complex thing happen,” said TSTC Chancellor Mike Reeser. TSTC’s 57,000-square-foot Brazos Center is anticipated to be completed in July, and classes are on track to begin in the new building starting fall 2017. The Brazos Center will bring four new programs: Robotics technology, electrical power and controls, environmental technology – compliance specialization and electrical lineworker technology. The building will also provide space for various student support services, including recruiting, student accounting, veterans programs, financial aid, admissions, a bookstore and a learning resource center. TSTC Vice Chancellor and Chief Execution Officer Randy Wooten said he expects the new offerings will increase the economic vitality of the region. “These programs were specifically selected because of the regional employers’ needs, as well as high salaries for the graduates,” Wooten said. “TSTC is an integral part of making the American Dream attainable to those who don’t attend a four-year university, and we’re proud of that.” TSTC’s Fort Bend campus came with encouragement and financial support from the cities of Rosenberg, Richmond and Sugar Land, Fort Bend County, Sprint Waste Services, the George Foundation and the

Henderson-Wessendorff Foundation. The municipalities and foundations made more than $40 million in contributions to help TSTC expand its educational opportunities in the region. TSTC Regent Joe M. Gurecky, himself a product of technical education, said the college will help make technical education attainable for area residents. “It’s very dear to me to see technical training brought to Fort Bend County,” Gurecky said. “Many parents feel that a four-year college is something their children must go to, but it isn’t for everybody. TSTC has no problem placing students into employment when there are a lot of people with bachelor’s degrees who are looking for work anywhere just to pay off their student debt. Here, students can attend school and be able to live at home with their parents, making it a lot more affordable for the family. Our students don’t have to get out of college with a huge debt on their shoulders.” Mary Garza, Bartlett Cocke’s vice president of operations for East Texas Region 4, said the company couldn’t be more proud to work with TSTC to bring the vision to light. “The completion of this building structure is a major milestone for the TSTC Fort Bend campus and a

celebration of yet another success story for a bright future for the students who will emerge as successful skilled technical partners,” Garza said. Reeser agreed and urged the importance of partnerships. “I can’t say enough good things about the architect and the builder in this project,” he said. “They’ve done simply an outstanding job on this building and the one that preceded it. Regarding partnerships, there’s no worthy endeavor that happens when someone works alone. Partnerships are the key to making really important things happen. You can search all over Texas and you won’t find a better community to make things happen than the communities in Fort Bend County.” Ultimately, the TSTC campus will boast six to eight buildings and be able to serve a projected enrollment of 5,000 students. TSTC serves Texas through 10 campuses in Abilene, Breckenridge, Brownwood, Fort Bend County, Harlingen, Marshall, North Texas, Sweetwater, Waco and Williamson County. Neighborhood Centers and United Way of Greater Houston offer free tax preparation services

s the tax season kicks off and tax payers are looking to get the most out of their refund, United Way of Greater Houston and Neighborhood Centers Inc. are reminding people in the Houston area to take advantage of their quality, free tax preparation services. IRS-certified preparers assist families and individuals earning up to $58,000, helping them retain every dollar of their refund and saving the average $200 cost of professional tax preparation services. While the word “free” is used by many paid preparers, clients are often subject to staggering interest rates on predatory loans offered as “refund advances.” With the recent announcement by the IRS that taxpayers claiming the Earned Income and Additional Child Tax Credits will have their refund delayed, there is an increased risk of losing hard-earned money to these refund advances. Kelsey-Seybold Clinic managing director and healthcare visionary, Spencer Berthelsen, announces retirement Dr. Berthelsen known nationally as a champion of Accountable Care

fter nearly four decades as a key member of the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic medical and executive team, Spencer Berthelsen, M.D., F.A.C.P., retired as Managing Director and Internal Medicine physician March 10. Dr. Berthelsen graduated from Rice University and received his medical degree from UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of California, San Diego and joined KelseySeybold Clinic in 1980. He would go on to serve in numerous leadership capacities, including tenure as chairman of the board for 15 years. “We can’t overemphasize the impact that Dr. Berthelsen has made in his nearly 40 years of service to Kelsey-Seybold Clinic and to the healthcare community across Texas and the country,” said Tony Lin, M.D., F.H.M, chairman of Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “His commitment to caring for patients was always his top priority and the driving force behind every process improvement, new service line and capital investment developed and executed under his guidance.” In 2012, Kelsey-Seybold Clinic was named the nation’s first Accountable Care Organization by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Of all of his accomplishments, this accreditation acknowledged the years of development, investment and commitment Dr. Berthelsen devoted to accountable care. He knew this model would achieve the goal of improved patient care and health outcomes, while lowering the total cost of healthcare for employers and patients. The journey to NCQA ACO accreditation has its roots in the principles established when Kelsey-Seybold was founded in 1949, but accelerated significantly in the 2000s when Dr. Berthelsen helped lead the Texas Medical

Association’s fight to bring reasonable reform to the malpractice liability system in Texas and helped secure the passage of Tort reform in 2003. The passage of tort reform had a significant and ongoing positive impact in Kelsey-Seybold’s ability to invest in physicians and infrastructure, including a $20 million investment in an electronic medical records system. In 2001, when Dr. Berthelsen was elected chairman of the Board of Managers, KelseySeybold had slowly expanded to include 15 locations in the Greater Houston area with 273 providers. During his chairmanship from 2001 to 2016, Kelsey-Seybold’s Accountable Care model matured and flourished. This period of expansion at Kelsey-Seybold included a $250 million investment in new or remodeled clinics that offer an expanded list services and specialties to make care more convenient for patients, a 40 percent growth in the number of providers to meet patient demand and the development of the clinic’s Electronic Medical Records System, which catapulted the clinic’s ability to deliver on performance measures, including health outcomes and value. These investments led to the clinic’s recognition as the nation’s first Accountable Care Organization by the National Committee for Quality Assurance in 2012; excellence in care for Diabetes, Heart & Stroke and Back pain; as well as being recognized as a Patient-Centered Medical Home. “We were practicing accountable care long before the term ever existed and the reason for that is because of Dr. Berthelsen’s thoughtful planning and leadership during his tenure as Chairman,” said Patrick M. Carter, M.D., M.B.A., F.A.A.F.P., chief of Family Medicine and Medical Director for Care Coordination and Quality Improvement at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Up to 30 percent of healthcare spending is wasted on unnecessary or duplicate medical testing and procedures. However, at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, practicing evidence-based care in an environment where doctors are connected reduces the waste in healthcare, improves quality, and lowers total medical cost. This has been Dr. B’s mantra and our recognition as an Accountable Care Organization is his legacy.”

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital honors outstanding nurses with the DAISY Award

ee Cantos, RN, and Ranjeetha Reddy, RN, were named Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s DAISY Award winners, a national honor that recognizes the contributions of extraordinary nurses. Cantos was nominated by a number of patients, who praised her kindness and willingness to provide compassionate care. One patient wrote that she was scared during her first night in the hospital, but Cantos went out of her way to make her feel secure. “I was worried about being left alone because my family was unable to spend the night,” the patient wrote on her nomination form. “Lee quickly calmed my fears. She kneeled down at the side of my bed and explained everything about the unit. She was kind and considerate. She listened and answered all the questions that my daughters and I had. By the time she finished, I knew I was in good hands and my daughters felt better having to leave me alone. Throughout that night she kept her promise. She was there constantly monitoring my heart rate and blood pressure. She took great care of me. My family and I thank her for being a nurse committed to excellent patient care.” Reddy was also nominated by several of her patients, who commented on her comforting and gentle nature. One patient in particular spoke of her recent diagnosis of acute leukemia, and the struggles she faced in dealing with the reality of both the illness and the treatment. “Ranjeetha is amazingly comforting as she cares for you,” the patient wrote. “Her care and concern for every detail is extraordinary. She has taken the time to get to know me and how I respond to things. She anticipates my anxiousness and heads it off with encouragement I can trust. I feel so confident when she cares for me, and it allows me to remain positive with my treatments. My doctor is so pleased with my response to the chemotherapy, and I owe that to her. I wouldn’t have made it this far without her.” In honor of the DAISY Award selection, Cantos and Reddy received a certificate of appreciation, a DAISY Award pin, a beautiful sculpture titled “A Healer’s Touch,” hand-carved by artists of the Shona tribe in

TAKES FLIGHT IN APRIL

Houston’s Largest Home Tour is taking flight, promising an April filled with wellappointed homes, jam-packed events and a bounty of butterflies. Hundreds of homes – including more than 150 models – will be open daily in Johnson Development’s 14 masterplanned communities throughout Houston. Homes will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and noon to 6 p.m. Sundays. Admission is free.
