TGM Digital Media and Printing owner living American Dream
T
homas George is living the American Dream. Thomas George is living the American Dream. A native of India, he immigrated to the United States in 1987. His story since then mirrors that of many who legally move to America in pursuit of a better life. Through hard work and determination he was able to work his way up from a newspaper pressman to be the owner of his own thriving company. When he first arrived in Houston, he could not find a job. So he moved to New York, finding work there for three years as a press journeyman for USA Today. He then returned to Houston where he began a 26-year career as a pressman for the Houston Chronicle. He liked his job, but more than that, he liked to learn. He studied the digital technologies that went with his work. That studiousness paid off. About 2 ½ years ago the newspaper eliminated his position and let him go. The entrepreneurial spirit that drove George to seek a better life in America pushed him to start his own company. Like so many entrepreneurs before him, he started his printing business in his garage. He later moved it to the
current facility at 2617 South Main in Stafford. There, TGM Digital Media and Printing has continued to grow and thrive. Although he provides traditional printing services, he has literally moved on to bigger and betting things. He has machines that produce gigantic images for signs, banners, car wraps and more. He also has his own line of CDs and DVDs under his UniMaster brand. More recently he has added a sublimation machine that will allow him to print high-quality images on clothes. George’s is a success story that truly inspires those who understand the importance of a good education, hard work and a solid work ethic. There were no shortcuts on his path and he is certainly not an overnight success. George is the perfect example of what it takes to start from nothing and rise to be a successful businessman in America. I encourage you to read his story inside this issue and learn more about a remarkable businessman and company who are helping to make Stafford and Fort Bend County a better place to live. Be prepared to adjust retirement income
W
hile many couples develop retirement income sources, they don’t always think about what happens to that income when they die. More often than not, when one spouse passes, the other is inadvertently left with a hole in their monthly retirement income. Generally, neither spouse intends for this to happen, but when it does, it can create a host of issues for the surviving spouse. For example, say we are working with a couple. Jim has $2,500 from Social Security and $1,000 from his pension. Sue is receiving $1,500 from Social Security so their combined household income is $5,000 a month. Jim unexpectedly passes. Because Jim expected to outlive Sue, he chose larger payments on his pension and Sue only receives 50 percent. When he passes, since Jim earned more on Social Security, Sue steps up to his amount. Now she’s receiving $2,500 from Social Security and $500 from Jim’s pension for a total of $3,000 a month. Her monthly income has decreased by $2,000. Sue’s survival income won’t be enough for
her to live comfortably. Fortunately, there are strategies to ensure enough survival income in the event that you lose your spouse. For example, I recently spoke with three female clients who had recently lost their April R. Roberts, J.D. husbands. We had to quickly find a new retirement income source for the first woman. She and her husband had cut into their savings to pay for his medical bills. So not only did she have to find a new source of retirement income, that new source had to generate more income than my client expected. The second woman was in pretty good shape, which is rare. She had multiple income sources including veteran benefits from her husband, which she continued
to receive. The third woman hadn’t looked at her finances in years. Her husband had managed their money so we had to go in and help her set up a plan for the rest of her retirement. While I wish everyone ended up in a situation like my second client, this is very uncommon. Usually when a spouse dies, the surviving spouse needs to develop a new source of income to bridge the gap between what their spouse received and what they currently receive. In our advanced planning process, we help our client families plan for these contingencies. If you don’t have a plan in place, give us a call and we can talk about our innovative planning that helps keep you secure in the event something unexpected happens to your spouse. And, if you’d like a second opinion on any plan that you have, we can help with that as well. Can’t wait to see you! Yours,

Courthouse Business: What every client should know By Pedro Ruiz
W
hen you are appointed to serve as a judge for four District Courts, you find yourself meeting many professional demands. What you find in meeting those demands is that you have to be very organized in your approach to the daily business of the courthouse. What every client should know is these professional demands impact how time and money is managed at the courthouse. Never be late: Due to the wide variety of demands at the courthouse, cases are usually organized by the practice area of the case. Jury trials might only be scheduled Tuesday mornings, and civil discovery hearings might only be scheduled Friday mornings. If you’re late you might be deemed absent and receive an adverse ruling. Worse, if you’re late you might not be heard until a later date costing you and your lawyer
time and money. Never be late for court. Be ready to wait: Every case at the courthouse demands special attention. The one true rule at the courthouse is the most important case Pedro Ruiz is the next case. The corollary to that rule is that the information gathering process is the most important step in every case. Confidence in our system of jurisprudence is based upon the good decisions made at the courthouse. Good decisions can only be made with good information. In order to get the best information, judges need good lawyers to discover every important fact and make every important argument in stating their case.
This process takes time and time requires your patience. Control is a myth: In my near quarter century of public service, I never met the person who could control my thoughts about any particular issue. Judges take pride in their hunger for learning and independence of thought. Clients and lawyers alike should know this as they approach the courthouse steps so they may concentrate their efforts on gathering and presenting information to help the judge in the decision making process. Judge Pedro Ruiz is now retired from his Judicial Appointment in Fort Bend County. A trial and appellate lawyer in juvenile, family, criminal, and civil cases, he earned his judicial appointment in 2003. As a Judge, Pedro Ruiz presided over cases in the 240th, 268th, 400th and 434th Judicial District Courts of Fort Bend County. Judge Ruiz is currently a practicing lawyer and mediator in Fort Bend County at the Law Firm of Roberts Markel Weinberg Butler Hailey PC.

ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital hosts annual Cancer Survivors Day Celebration Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital recently joined nearly 14 million American cancer survivors in the annual celebration of National Cancer Survivors Day. Also recognized were the many family members, friends and health care providers whose contributions to and support of cancer survivors help make the celebration possible. The celebration was led by associate chief nursing officer Sally Shen, M.S.N., R.N., NEA-BC. Shen briefly shared how cancer has affected her family before introducing Mary Nugent, this year’s patient speaker, and Sindhu Nair, M.D., hematologist/oncologist at Houston Methodist Oncology Partners, who delivered the physician perspective as well as the survivor acknowledgment. “You are our inspiration, and I thank you for that,” said Nair. “Here in this room, we have husbands and wives, sons and daughters. We have doctors, nurses, physical therapists, nurse navigators — a community. They are what makes this perhaps difficult experience, easier to get through,” he said. Anyone living with a personal history of cancer — from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life — is a cancer survivor, according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation. Additionally, the foundation says that more people are surviving cancer than ever before, which can be attributed to advances in prevention, early detection, treatment and follow-up care. Cancer, however, does come with many challenges, such as hindered access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, inadequate or no insurance, financial hardships, employment problems and psychological struggles. “Despite these difficulties, cancer survivors can live active, productive lives with the support of other survivors,” said Nair. WINGS help them soar
M
ore than 12 area businesses took part in Child Advocates of Fort Bend’s WINGS Summer Lifeskills Program last week. Child Advocates of Fort Bend’s innovative WINGS program focusses on helping youth 14+ prepare for independent living when they age out of the foster care system. What began as a pilot program more than 10 years ago is now seen as a model for other CASA programs across the state. “WINGS focuses on helping youth in foster care acquire life skills, plan educational goals, develop a transitional living plan and create a support system of positive adults outside of the foster care system. Throughout the year, the youth participate in interactive, educational activities and trips where they learn critical life skills and explore post-secondary educational opportunities. By developing attainable goals and a plan for their future, the youth are empowering themselves for successful independent lives,” said Child Advocates of Fort Bend CASA Program Director Metoyer Martin. “I never imagined how many opportunities you have in life,” stated one foster child on a survey after participating in the program last week. Another stated “this program taught me life skills that I will need in the future.” The Summer Lifeskills Program is a packed week of visits to different businesses to learn skills that are critical to independent living. They visited three businesses a day. Youth started the week at the Hay (Houston Alumni and Youth) Center and PAL (Preparation for Adult Living) Program learning about benefits and resources available to them. They also visited the University of Houston where they learned
about college opportunities. Visits to AT&T, Nan Ya Plastics and Nalco offered information on career opportunities, resume writing and interviewing. Dr. Ivan Mefford and the Fort Bend County Sheriff’s Office talked to the teens about careers in the medical field and law enforcement, respectively. Visits to Wells Fargo and CarMax addressed financial literacy and car buying, leasing and maintenance. In addition, the youth visited Depelchin to learn about the agency’s transitional living housing program and Darling Homes to learn about home buying and leasing. Every Lifeskills week contains “cooking day” in which the teens learn to plan, budget, shop and prepare a meal. Last week’s cooking was done at the HEB located in Telfair. “When Child Advocates of Fort Bend asked if we would participate in the WINGS Summer Lifeskills Program, we agreed immediately,” stated Crystal Moya from HEB. “Florence Butt, the founder of HEB lived her life helping others. Her son, Herbert E. Butt knew that and continues to carry on her traditions. That is why HEB is so focused on community involvement. Participating and connecting with the WINGS youth was very special for me. I taught them some things and they taught me some as well.” In answer to survey questions about their Lifeskills Week experience one teen responded “Now I’m prepared to start my life” another stated, “The WINGS program has helped me to understand that being a grown up isn’t as easy as it looks.” Still another said the WINGS program helped me to set my goals and take the next step. “We are so grateful to all of the volunteers and businesses who participated this year,” stated Child Advocates of Fort Bend WINGS Team Leader Heather

UH System regents approve development of new campus in Katy
W
orking to expand higher education opportunities in Katy and West Houston, the University of Houston System has announced plans to purchase 46 acres and build a state-of-the-art academic building in the fast-growing suburban area. The new site will be known as UHS University Park. UH System regents approved the purchase Thursday. “This purchase signals a new stage in the University of Houston System’s strategic plan to serve the greater Houston region,” said Paula Myrick Short, UH System vice chancellor for academic affairs. “It will allow us not only to serve more people closer to their homes, but also to offer a broader range of degree programs.” Lance LaCour, president and CEO of the Katy Area Economic Development Council, said expanding higher education options in the area is a critical priority for civic leaders. Lance LaCour The Katy Area EDC assisted with site selection, and area legislators and other organizations worked together to secure Capital Construction Bonds (previously known as Tuition Revenue Bonds, or TRBs) from the Texas Legislature to fund the project. “Increasing educational opportunities, especially higher education, is a key priority for the Katy area,” he said, noting the Katy area has a population larger than Pittsburgh, Pa., which supports seven universities. “Residents in this area have a great need for both undergraduate and graduate classes at a location that meets their needs.”
August 2016 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
Purchase price for the land, near the Grand Parkway and Interstate 10, is $13.8 million. The contract with seller includes an option for an additional 14.6 acres at the site. The additional acreage would cost $6.3 million if purchased within 12 months, according to the agreement. The purchase and building project will be funded by $46.8 million in Capital Construction Bonds, approved during the 84th session of the Texas Legislature. A system task force led by Short conducted an extensive study of various locations and commissioned an independent demographic analysis of the region before recommending the site. Short said the new UHS University Park location is a key to the System’s strategic initiatives for the area. “The dynamic growth in the Katy area is clear evidence of the need for expanded educational services in the region,” she said. “The University of Houston System has worked with residents to make sure we are meeting their needs, at a location that will offer convenient access, as well as room to grow.” The new UH System’s expansion will give area residents an opportunity to earn their degrees closer to home, an area that includes portions of Harris, Fort Bend and Waller counties. The population is expected to increase from 317,000 residents to 550,000 within the next 20 years, and about 200 companies are headquartered there, including many in the energy sector. Regents also approved plans to sell the current 10-acre satellite campus in Cinco Ranch, which opened in 1989 and offers junior, senior and graduate-level courses from universities in the UH System. That campus has a 36,000-square-foot classroom building but is landlocked, with no room for expansion.

Carter attended University of Texas at Dallas and received a BS in business in 1981 and Lamar University where she received a BS in communications in 2008. She entered the insurance industry in 1989. Carter has been with Colonial Life representing Colonial worksite benefits since 2005. Carter has been an active member of HAHU since 2011 and has served on the board in various positions since 2012. She is from Beaumont and currently lives in Katy. “Being a member of HAHU has made me a better person and a better agent for my clients. I have met some great people in the industry I would not have met outside of HAHU. I have been informed through the education we receive through CE courses and speakers at our luncheons and other events put on by HAHU, TAHU and NAHU. I have been privileged and honored to serve in several capacities and received much more than I feel that I have contributed. The Houston Association of Health Underwriters is the local chapter of the Texas Association of Health Underwriters (TAHU) and the National Association of Health Underwriters (NAHU). NAHU represents more than 100,000 professional insurance agents and brokers who provide insurance for millions of Americans. NAHU is headquartered in Washington, DC. TGM DIGITAL
MEDIA AND PRINTING
IS GROWING WITH THE BIG PICTURE IN MIND 16
W
hen it comes to printing, no one gets the big picture like Thomas George does. George prints some of the biggest pictures around. They can be found on storefronts, banners, office walls and even tooling around town on cars. The owner of TGM Digital Media and Printing in Stafford is taking printing to new levels of size and quality. The array of products he provides is growing as fast as his young business. Although car wraps, banners, posters, window graphics and stickers tend to be the more visible attention getters, they barely scratch the surface of the printing services TGM can provide. Like most any commercial printer, he can produce postcards, calendars, business cards, newsletters, letterhead, door hangers and similar products. That’s just for starters. Pulling out a notebook with an 8-by-10 photo on the cover, George set it on the table and scratched at it with his fingernails. “It won’t scratch and the color never changes,” he said of the image printed on an aluminum plate. Flipping over the notebook, he displayed another image. Moving it slightly revealed the depth of the image and its rich colors.

“We can also do 3-D,” he said. Adding to his line of services, George recently purchased a sublimation machine that will allow him to print high-quality images on clothes. “The color holds, it never changes,” he said. Holding a printed sample fabric, he stretched it to demonstrate its versatility. Printing isn’t the only thing he does. TGM carries high grade, A+ blank CDs and DVDs that are used for professional duplication. Within the United States, TGM is the only distributor of the UniMaster brand. Other stores are welcome to carry the quality brand by contacting TGM directly. “They’re not available in any shop,” he said, noting that his store is the only place to buy them. In addition, he also provides CD and DVD duplication and printing and packaging services. CONTINUES...

The rise of TGM Digital Media is a tale of an American Dream come true. George was born in India and worked as a pressman for the Times of India in Bombay. He is a graduate of India’s Board of Technical Education. George immigrated to the United States in 1987, coming first to Houston but then moving to New York when he was unable to find work here. In the Big Apple he was a press journeyman for USA Today. He returned three years later and began working as a pressman for the Houston Chronicle. In the 26 years he worked there, he became a student of the craft. “I took an interest in printing technology,” he said. He learned how to use the software such as Photoshop and InDesign to properly adjust photos and graphics for print. He studied and became familiar with every aspect of printing and digital media that he could. That studiousness is now paying off. “Two and a half years back they (Chronicle) eliminated my position,” he said. George responded by taking some classes and trying to get into the oil and gas industry. Unsuccessful at that attempt, he went back to doing what he knew best. “I started digital printing in my garage and from there I moved here,” he said. From a single machine in his garage, he began building his customer base and expanding his services. He quickly reached the point where his garage was too small. That’s
18
when he made the move into a 7,000-squarefoot facility at 2617 South Main in Stafford. He now works with a highly qualified team. Carolyn Crump, an award-winning Houston artist with a shared background from the Houston Chronicle, provides creative expertise in graphic arts. Cyndi Garner has been with the company since the first day and helps with the CD/DVD duplication and packaging products. Carol Abraham assists with computer and technology needs. His wife, Lissy, and two sons, Bobby and Blesson, are also utilized in the business responsibilities at times. George said working 16 or more hours a

day is not uncommon. “It’s growing fast,” he said of his business. “Every day two or three new clients walk in.” Each spring TGM gets slammed with business, as Austin’s South By Southwest (SXSW) convention gets under way. Many of Houston’s music artists and producers place orders for supplies, printing and duplication for the festival. Extra supplies are ordered in advance so he can be prepared for the rush that takes place. His bread-and-butter, however, remains local clients with custom needs. “Most of my job is custom made and creative,” he said. One of his customers is having images printed on ceramic tiles for a wall at home. “They are doing a project for a family tree,” he said. Another client is a hospital that has an entire wall decorated with an image he printed. An executive conference room has a Sistine Chapel styled image on its ceiling that George printed. “I can do billboards but right now I do not have enough manpower,” he said. He quickly added that he does do sign boards. One of the biggest project he anticipates doing is his own. “I’m going to wrap my building,” he said. “I’m just waiting for city approval.” In the meantime, he will continue to expand and do big things – and small things – in big ways.

Sibling success
Brother and sister have adjoining restaurants By Joe Southern
W
hen it comes to competition in the restaurant business, there is no sibling rivalry here. In fact, there is no competition. They’re actually quite complimentary. Vasos Bar-B-Q has been a Sugar Land staple for nearly 30 years. For the past few months, the owner of Vasos has been anonymously helping his sister start her own café. Located next door to Vasos Bar-B-Q in what was the restaurant’s party room is Anonymous Artisan Bites and Coffee Bar. Frank Vasos made the space available to his sister, Patricia Pantazopoulos, to open the café. The siblings are children of Greek immigrants and have spent their lives in the food and restaurant industry. Vasos opened his restaurant in 1989 near the intersection of Dairy Ashford and Hwy. 90A. Over the years it has grown in service, selection and reputation. For Vasos, it’s all about quality. “We try to buy the best meats and the best produce,” he said. “We make everything inhouse.” Vasos Bar-B-Q 9920 Hwy. 90-A, #D120 Sugar Land, TX 77478 Phone: (281) 242-8585 Fax: (281) 242-8584 www.vasos-bbq.com www.vasoscatering.com Hours: Monday -Thursday, Saturday 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday closed
From his own barbecue sauce to his slowcooked meats, beans, potatoes, fresh coleslaw. Greek salads, pecan pie and other side dishes, everything is prepared to Vasos’ exacting standards. “The business has evolved into catering,” he said. The restaurant employs about a dozen people throughout the year, but that expands to 50-60 people during the holidays when the catering business ramps up. The catering busi-

ness has grown so much, in fact, that it even has its own website (www.vasoscatering.com). The restaurant can seat around 100, depending on the use of outdoor seating. It used to be able to handle more with the party room that is now Anonymous. Pantazopoulos and her husband Tasos Pantazopoulos run the little coffee shop and bakery. “Tasos is the barista,” she said. “I do all of the baking. Everything is made from scratch.” The coffee is an Italian gourmet brand named Lavazza and the food items are mostly Greek inspired. The couple moved to Sugar Land from Greece where Patricia has a popular cooking show on television that continues to air there. “It’s called Go Greek with Patricia,” she said. Although she bakes traditional coffee shop staples, there is a decidedly Greek flair to her offerings. “I’m very into promoting Greek cuisine,” she said. As the restaurant grows, she hopes to expand her services to include a monthly dinner club complete with a five-course meal and Greek wines. She also wants to hold cooking classes at some point. Just as Vasos built his restaurant on quali-

ty so has his sister. Although only open for a few months, the reputation it has built is keeping it anything but anonymous in Sugar Land. As for the name, Patricia said it doesn’t mean anything. She said she and Tasos were trying to come up with a name but could not agree on one. “We’ll just call it Anonymous,” she said. She said the name alone gets people’s attention. “It makes you think ‘what is that?’” she said. What it is, is good food and coffee served in a cozy setting next door to some of the best barbecue in town.
