Enjoy the wonderful holiday season… Michael Sudhalter Editor
I
used to procrastinate and wait until the last minute to go holiday shopping. Competing for a parking spot in the same zip code as the mall was frustrating – until I considered the business owners’ point of view. The holiday season is an economic engine like no other. And while I don’t recommend procrastination, we have an excellent variety of shops that sells gifts here in Fort Bend County. Gifts are an important part of the holiday season, but December is truly about enjoying time with your family and friends – whether you celebrate Christmas, Chanukah or Kwanzaa.
I still remember the smell of latkes and brisket during the eight nights of Chanukah, while we spun dreidels and shared laughs and memories. Watching my fianceé’s face light up as she prepares Christmas decorations, picks out a tree and turns up the Holiday Music on the stereo is very joyous. During the holiday season, there will be plenty of opportunities to eat delicious food and consume beverages. Remember to keep safety and health in mind. Speaking of health, the good people at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land have plenty of positive news and updates to share for December and the upcoming year. So enjoy the entire holiday season, and get those New Year’s resolutions ready! Sincerely, Michael

New ownership has big plans for Skeeters
Bob and Marcie Zlotnik
By Michael Sudhalter
B
ob and Marcie Zlotnik have begun sole ownership of the Sugar Land Skeeters with the enthusiasm of rookies on the first day of Spring Training and the experience of many years in entrepreneurship and business. “We have a huge to-do-list,” Bob said. The Houston couple had owned a third of the independent baseball franchise, but they officially acquired all of it through their company, SL Baseball, LLC, earlier this month. Opening Day Partners (ODP), a Maryland-based company, started the Skeeters franchise in 2012 and operated the city-owned Constellation Field under a contract with the city of Sugar Land. The Zlotniks have taken over those responsibilities as part of the sale. They’d like to bring more events to Constellation Field – concerts, college and high school baseball, and perhaps, even boxing. From Nov. 28-Jan. 4, Constellation Field will host a Festival of Lights. Bob first discovered the Skeeters when he read about their arrival in a Houston newspaper. Bob, then the CEO/President of StarTex Power, contacted ODP about the naming rights of the stadium.
6
He sold StarTex to Constellation, and ended up owning a third of the team. Bob agreed with some of ODP’s decisions and disagreed with others. “I’m an entrepreneur – it’s a lot easier if you have control,” he said. Last season, ODP owned four of the eight Atlantic League franchises. They recently sold the Lancaster (Pa.) Barnstormers to an ownership group in that area. The Zlotniks began the process last December and finalized it earlier this month. They declined to disclose a price on the sale. They’re walking into a good situation. The franchise has been profitable in each of its three seasons, and last season, the team led the Atlantic League in attendance (383.465 fans) and was in the top 10 percent of all minor league baseball teams. On the field, the Skeeters hosted the AllStar Game in July and reached the Championship Series where they lost to Lancaster. The Zlotniks plan to take a successful franchise and make it even more “fan friendly.” That includes new “between innings entertainment” such as a “Hit, Run and Throw Competition” and perhaps competitions between high schools where there’s a seasonlong tally, with a prize at the end. Bob said the Skeeters will have a “Suggestion Box” where winning suggestions will be rewarded with prizes. Bob, a former University of Texas pitcher in the 1970s, helped the late Dr. John McMullen on the acquisition of the Houston Astros in 1979 and worked on a study of domed stadiums for the MLB Commissioner’s Office in the 1980s. December 2014 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
Bob is a minority owner of the Houston Astros, with a less than 5 percent stake in the franchise. He’d like to see more collaboration between the franchises. “The Skeeters are misunderstood by the Astros – the Astros view them as competition,” Bob said. Bob said the choice isn’t usually between attending a Skeeters or Astros game. “People decide whether to see the Skeeters or go to the movies,” Bob said. “(Crosspromoting) with the Astros could be mutually beneficial. If it’s not, we won’t do it.” Bob hasn’t spoken to Houston Astros owner Jim Crane about the possibility of adding Sugar Land as an affiliate, but the conventional wisdom in MLB is to put affiliate franchises in markets where it’s competing for fans. MLB fans in Fort Bend County are already overwhelmingly Astros fans. Currently, the seven other Atlantic League franchises are based on the Eastern Seaboard. Bob would like to own a franchise in The Woodlands, and perhaps bring the Fort Worth Cats of the United Baseball League, into the Atlantic League. Adding a team in Baytown or Galveston may be an option as well. Bringing Texas teams into the Atlantic League fold would build natural rivalries for the Skeeters and limit travel costs. “I’d love to have a rivalry between Sugar Land and The Woodlands,” Bob said. The Skeeters’ staff will largely remain intact. Bob said Skeeters manager Gary Gaetti “is doing an extremely good job” and will have control over player-related and on-field decisions, and said that general manager Chris Jones is “very talented.”

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is first in the Fort Bend community to offer endobronchial ultrasounds
M
ethodist Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine Specialists physician Priya Oolut, M.D., recently performed the first endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) with fine needle aspiration biopsy in Fort Bend County. Dr. Oolut used the EBUS technique to diagnose and stage lung cancer in a patient at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. During the procedure, a special endoscope – fitted with an ultrasound processor and a finegauge aspiration needle – is guided through the patient’s mouth and trachea into the lungs. “This technique allows us to obtain real-time images in and around the lungs and to identify difficult-to-reach tumors,” says Dr. Oolut. “We can also use EBUS to biopsy tissue or fluid sample from the lungs and surrounding lymph nodes of the chest.
The ultrasound serves as a guide and allows me to ‘see’ through the airway walls, which makes it easier to locate enlarged lymph nodes or masses. When the scope is in place, we Priya Oolut, M.D. pass a thin needle through it to obtain a biopsy sample.” The typical approach to obtaining samples from the lung was surgery, which required hospitalization and lengthy recovery times. Using EBUS with fine needle aspiration, Dr. Oolut is able to quickly and thoroughly obtain samples for diagnosing and staging lung cancer, detecting infections and identifying inflammatory diseases that affect the lungs, such as sarcoidosis or other cancers like lymphoma – without an incision. “Once a diagnosis of the lung cancer is confirmed through biopsy, the next important step in creating an appropriate treatment plan is to determine the stage of the cancer, which simply means determining how far the cancer has spread, if at all,” says Dr. Oolut. “EBUS allows me to obtain multiple samples during a single
procedure so that the patient can be accurately staged without the need for surgery. This is a tremendous benefit to the patient and makes it possible for us to start treatment faster.” “Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has been a consistent leader in bringing the most sophisticated and complex services to Fort Bend, and our physicians are now regularly performing a number of procedures that simply weren’t possible outside of the medical center just a few years ago,” said Chris Siebenaler, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital CEO. Dr. Oolut is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, critical care medicine and sleep medicine. To make an appointment with Dr. Oolut or the other physicians at Methodist Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine Specialists, call 281.325.0005 or visit methodistsugarlanddocs.com. Clements, Austin High School football teams donate breast cancer shirts
T
wo Fort Bend ISD high school football squads recently made generous donations to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Breast Care Center. Athletes from the Clements High School and Stephen F. Austin High School football teams donated a number of postmastectomy pocketed button-up shirts to the Center. The shirts are specially designed for the unique needs of women who have undergone a mastectomy; the Breast Care Center will give them to patients over the next year. “All of us at the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Breast Care Center admire the generosity and kindness that these young men have demonstrated through their donation,” says Maria Socci, who serves as the Breast Care Center’s care navigator. “Their donation will enable us to provide these special shirts to our patients free of charge as a show of support for their fight against breast cancer.” Clements Head Coach Keith Knowles began the effort last year, when his team captains wanted to use a portion of the money they had raised to buy post-mastectomy shirts rather than more football equipment. “I always try and teach our players the importance of giving back to the community,” said Knowles. “We are fortunate to have a great deal of support, and this is one way we can pass it along. I am amazed every day at the character and quality of our young men.” This year, the football players at Austin High School joined their counterparts at Clements and added to the donation. Austin Head Coach Dan Schreiber said he was impressed when his team captains suggested they use some of their funding for the shirts. “The players’ willingness to make a donation like this demonstrates a great deal of maturity and compassion on their part,” he said. “These young men recognize that fighting cancer is a difficult task, and they wanted to do their part to make it a little bit easier for the women in our community.”

Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital offers unique Care Experience for South Asian patients
M
emorial Hermann Southwest Hospital now offers services and amenities designed specifically for South Asian patients. “Last year, many of our South Asian physicians and employees participated in focus groups to identify how we could provide a unique care experience for these patients,” said Asian Service Line Administrator Carla Kuaiwa. “We wanted to offer services and amenities especially for this population and completely unlike any other hospital in Houston.” In Texas, the Houston-Sugar LandBaytown region has the largest Asian population — more than 300,000 people. According to the U.S. Census, Asians accounted for 3.5 percent of the Texas population in 2008, but nearly 15 percent of Fort Bend’s population and 6 percent of Harris County residents. Memorial Hermann Southwest, on U.S. 59 near the Fort Bend-Harris county border, is located in the middle of this thriving community. As a result of meticulous research led by Kuaiwa, Memorial Hermann Southwest developed an extraordinary program concentrating on cultural sensitivity, quality, and comfort. The initiative began with Patient Care Director Nancy Yuill and her team conducting a week-long South Asian Fair to educate all Memorial Hermann Southwest employees about the cultural beliefs and practices of the South Asian population. Key points of discussion were the importance of including family members in the health care decision-making process and the strong emphasis on quality nurses. Then, last spring, the hospital’s Food and Nutrition Department prepared a variety of dishes for a team of South Asian physicians and employees to taste test. With feedback on ways to make each dish more authentic, Chef Darian Hewitt developed a menu featuring such items as chicken shorba; chicken, gobi, or vegetable tikka

masala; chicken or vegetable madras curry; naan; palak paneer; and vegetable somosa. The South Asian component is the latest development in a robust initiative to cater to the unique needs of the demographics surrounding the hospital. enough; so, having staff who speak your language, a family-friendly atmosphere, and familiar foods make it a bit easier,” said Gary Kerr, CEO of Memorial Hermann Southwest. “We strive to provide quality care and personal attention, and to meet the individual needs of every patient.” Memorial Hermann Southwest was named among the nation’s Top 100 Hospitals by Truven Health Analytics. This annual study evaluates the nation’s hospitals on measures of overall organizational performance in patient care, operational efficiency, and financial stability.

eritage Homes has purchased 127 acres in Imperial Sugar Land where it will develop 335 home sites in the Fort Bend master-planned community at Highway 6 and Highway 90A. The acquisition represents about a third of the land to be developed in the community, according to Imperial Sugar Land General Manager Shay Shafie. The new homes on the acquired property also represent about half of the single-family homes planned for Imperial. “This is a terrific opportunity to establish a presence in one of Fort Bend’s true gems,” notes Steve Harding, Houston division president of Meritage Homes, who adds floor plans and pricing for homes in Imperial will be announced in early 2015. As crews prepare the land acquired by Meritage Homes, Imperial’s first neighborhoods also are beginning to take shape with
the construction of garden-style, luxury patio homes and two-story townhomes. “We’re very pleased with the progress of the development,” notes Shafie. “The land acquisition by Meritage Homes is certainly another positive step for Imperial.” In addition to its residential components, Imperial Sugar Land will offer a unique blend of retail, residential, entertainment and office to create a premier Sugar Land destination. Imperial also is home to a weekly Farmer’s Market, Constellation Field and the future homes of the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center and the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation Museum. Local family of entrepreneurs get an early start By Michael Sudhalter
W
hen it comes to getting an early start in the world of entrepreneurship, the Thomas siblings of Missouri City skipped the neighborhood lemonade stand. Chase, 12, Chance, 10, Chasity, 8, and Chandler,7, have set their sights on building their own small businesses. They were inspired by their mother, Ebony Thomas, an entrepreneur and former financial advisor who grew up in Missouri City. Mrs. Thomas sold stickers and candy in grade school and had saved up $1,100 by fifth grade. By high school, she was selling clothes and earrings to her classmates. She inspired her children to start their own businesses, providing each of them with $100 in start-up capital. The siblings are among 25 teams of finalists in a national cooking contest called Ben’s Beginnings, sponsored by Uncle Ben’s Rice. If

they’re selected as one of the five winners, they’ll receive a $15,000 prize and $30,000 toward a kitchen makeover at a local school. Since the siblings are homeschooled, the prize will go to nearby Blue Ridge Elementary School. Of the four siblings, Chandler holds the most interest in cooking. He’s starting a program called “Couch to Kitchen: Kid
Edition” to encourage children to learn how to cook and eat healthily. The majority of the project will deal with video production, so Chandler is learning about video work, editing and the costs associated with it. Chance is starting a clothing line called “Shirtelligence,” which will feature T-Shirts with the type of words that would be featured on the SAT Exam. Chance said his biggest challenge is establishing a website and creating online purchases. He also plans on adding graphics to the shirts, to keep them interesting. Chasity is creating small pillows that can store books inside of them. She’s focusing most of her efforts on sewing the pillows. Chase is writing a book “to encourage teenagers who aren’t the star of a team or most popular, that by being yourself, you can have a whole different (better) experience.” He said his challenge will be finding a publisher and getting the book published. “You can’t ever give up,” Chase said. “You have to reach for higher goals and do something that could help other people.”

From corporate jobs to the battlefields of Iraq:
Exhibitors at Imperial Farmers Market take different roads to re-invent careers
W
hile most exhibitors at the Farmers Market at Imperial Sugar Land have been close to farming all their lives, for others the year-round, openair market has helped re-invent their careers, luring them away from boardrooms, classrooms and even far-away lands. “Visiting with our exhibitors is often one of the best parts of the Farmers Market experience,” notes Kim Broom, general manager of the Farmers Market Imperial. “It’s amazing to hear their backgrounds and how they came to exhibit at the market.” As a loan officer at Washington Mutual, owning a green juicing business was probably the last thing on Alan Berrera’s mind. After discovering the benefits of juicing – and
growing tired of life in Corporate America – he launched Grass on the Go, wheatgrass shots packaged and flash-frozen for takehome use. “Operating the business is a way for me to take control of my future,” says Berrera, an original vendor at the Farmers Market at Imperial. “I love seeing the curiosity in kids’ faces as they run up to the table to try our wheatgrass shots.” For Konrad Bouffard, a former high school teacher, the Farmer’s Market at Imperial allowed him to pursue his passion for wildflower honey, known as the most challenging honey to produce. “About the only thing harder than keeping kids focused is handling thousands of bees,” says Bouffard, who co-owns Round Rock Honey with his wife Elizabeth. “I miss the kids, but our quality of life – and pay – has certainly improved.” Trey Howell’s career after the military could have taken many turns, but he chose

to follow his love for dogs by creating Hemp Hound, a Sugar Land company which produces dog collars, leashes and related items. “Making products for dogs is far cry from the military, but it’s my dream job and thanks to the farmers market, the business continues to grow,” Howell says. “It’s great exposure and it’s a good opportunity to tell people about the products and get feedback.” Open every Saturday from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. rain or shine, the year-round market at Imperial Sugar Land, 198 Kempner Street, offers locally grown produce and homemade products from local venders in the shadows of the historic Imperial Sugar Company silos. The Changing face of North Sugar Land By: Karen Daniels
A
fter closing its doors in 2003, the redevelopment of the former Imperial Sugar refinery site has been in the works for some time. Progress is finally being made with the culmination of several projects. Johnson Development is finalizing the infrastructure of the 27-acre refinery site. Parts of this land could soon be sold to companies who specialize in vertical property planning. The 3-bay container warehouse will be repurposed for the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center and the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation Museum in May 2016. Dennis Parmer, executive director of the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation, indicated that a possible name change could take place for the foundation to be more inclusive. “We want to look for a name that’s true to our history, but reflective of the many influences since the 1800s,” Parmer said. The double tracking by Union Pacific
Railroad from Ulrich to Gessner on Highway 90A will change the landscape and mobility when complete. With University Boulevard nearing completion, and the added train crossing at U.S. 90A, the City of Sugar Land must make two closures. The entrance to Nalco will close, but the second closure hasn’t

area. Pirtek is a hydraulic and pneumatic hose repair company, the only brand of its kind currently in the United States that offers 24/7 service within an hour of contact for on-site repair or replacement. At this time there are 400 units in 23 countries around the world; 50 in the U.S. The company originated in Australia 35 years ago. “In the franchising world we are a unique beast,” says VP of Franchise Development, Gwyn O’Kane. “Most people think of restaurants or retail when they think of franchises.

We are in the industrial business world.” The cost of down time can run companies anywhere from the hundreds to thousands in lost revenue. “We bring the hose shop to you.” Pirtek is looking to find the right business partners and will help every step of the way with finding the building, acquiring the trucks, providing training and securing financing. So far there are four locations in Dallas, one in San Antonio, and one in Jersey Village. The approximate time frame from signing the franchise agreement to running operations is four months. O’Kane said five jobs will be created in the beginning, but with maturity of the business, there is the potential for 10 more jobs to be added. been decided yet. The choice is between Wood St. or Brooks St. However, plans are in place to continue Brooks St. past the Char house and connect to Imperial Blvd. With the merger of Nalco Champion and Ecolab, a new headquarters will be constructed on an adjacent property of Nalco. The completion date for the 133,000-square foot, four story building is scheduled for late 2015. Employees currently working at the Houston and Fresno locations will relocate to this new site, bringing 1,000 employees to the area. The water tower is currently undergoing a facelift to restore and repaint the iconic structure with earth tones and the 1843 Imperial logo. Weather has been the driving force for the renovations and the unveiling date has not yet been announced. “The restoration of the water tower is a vital part of maintaining the heritage of Sugar Land,” says Dennis Parmer. And finally, the City of Sugar Land has a new and improved park in development for the Mayfield Park subdivision situated behind the refinery site at Ulrich and Avenue D. The 4-acre park will include a new basketball court, playground equipment, walking trail, and picnic areas. This project is set to begin in summer/fall 2015.

Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital Adds Enhanced Breast Imaging and Other Services
COVER STORY
A
s Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital continues expanding to meet the growing needs of Fort Bend County area residents, it adds an impressive list of enhanced services that make it easier than ever to receive quality care close to home. New this month are enhanced breast imaging and diagnostic services delivered through a new partnership between Memorial

Hermann and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Beginning November 20, patients served by Sugar Land and four other Memorial Hermann Breast Care Centers noticed a new name: MD Anderson Breast Care with Memorial Hermann. MD Anderson’s fellowship-trained breast radiologists will be interpreting their screening and diagnostic images. In addition, these breast radiologists will perform biopsies as needed and consult with patients and physicians. “Memorial Hermann and MD Anderson share a commitment to provide high-quality cancer care to communities across our region,” said Dan Wolterman, Memorial Hermann president and CEO. “Our partnership will combine the convenience and advanced technologies of Memorial Hermann’s breast imaging centers with interpretation and consultation from the world-renowned cancer expertise of MD Anderson, enabling our institutions to provide patients with unparalleled access to specialized breast imaging services close to home.” This citywide strategic collaboration between two highly acclaimed healthcare organizations initially begins at five of Memorial Hermann’s 10 Breast Care Centers. Along with Sugar Land, these centers include the Southwest, Memorial City, The Woodlands and Northeast locations.

Over the next year, the other five Memorial Hermann Breast Care Centers – in Katy, Pearland, Pasadena, Upper Kirby and Northwest – will have MD Anderson breast radiologists providing breast radiology services. Expansions will also add community breast care centers in South Katy, Cypress and Spring. “With MD Anderson providing these services to our patients, we now have the assurance that all our centers are using the same best-practice clinical protocols from this world leader in cancer treatment,” said Jim Brown, CEO, Memorial Hermann Ambulatory Services.

“Memorial Hermann and MD Anderson have jointly agreed to decrease the time between an abnormal mammography finding and a cancer diagnosis and treatment plan,” said Brown. Memorial Hermann provides mammograms to more than 100,000 patients annually. Four percent of these patients will have an abnormal finding. “Providing faster results translates to an improved experience for more than 4,000 patients annually in Houston,” said Brown. “We can impact a lot of lives.” Jay Parikh, M.D., will play a major role in condensing the time between an abnormal finding and a diagnosis. He is the medical director of the new Breast Care program. In providing clinical oversight, he will lead the MD Anderson radiology team. Dr. Parikh, a recognized international expert in breast imaging, has published dozens of articles and made nearly 400 presentations around the world. He holds fellow designations from the American College of Radiology, American College of Physician Executives, Society of Breast Imaging, and Canada’s Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. Before joining MD Anderson, Dr. Parikh was the medical director of the breast imaging center for Seattle-based Swedish Medical Center. “This is a phenomenal opportunity to build a network of imaging centers and positively impact the Houston community,” said Dr. Parikh. “This collaboration allows us to bring the best possible outpatient care and service to patients.”
24
When a second professional office building opens on the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Campus in 2015, it will include dedicated space for the MD Anderson Breast Care center, separate and distinct from outpatient radiology. It will also include a spa-like environment that caters to its predominately female clientele. Patients will benefit from the expansion of 3-D breast tomosynthesis in the new center. This cutting-edge technology is detecting smaller tumors at an earlier stage and reducing patient callbacks. “Tomosynthesis is a screening tool that reduces patient recalls for additional views and the anxiety associated with that,” said Dr. Parikh. “The early literature suggests this new technology is able to find some cancers that we may not see in conventional 2-D digital mammography, especially in patients with dense breast tissue.” The expansion will also enable MD Anderson breast radiologists to be onsite five, rather than four, days weekly. Additional services that will provide patients the convenience of remaining within the Fort Bend County area to receive care will include genetic counseling and breast MRIs. Patients will also have access to the Nurse Navigator Program to help guide, educate and support them from a possible cancer diagnosis through survivorship. “Though MD Anderson is providing breast radiologists to Memorial Hermann, patients still have the option of choosing where they would like to receive follow up care, should they need to make that decision,” said Brown.
Growing with Fort Bend County Exciting changes are taking place at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land as it seeks to continue delivery of quality care to patients, with the added convenience of access to enhanced services within Fort Bend County. Other services added at the hospital this year include 24-hour coverage by an affiliated pediatrician to its dedicated children’s Emergency Center and a Joint Center that provides nonsurgical and surgical options to people suffering from chronic knee and hip pain. Pediatric sleep services are also now available.

University Boulevard North expansion completed Construction of the University Boulevard North extension from State Highway 6 to U.S. Highway 90A is complete. The roadway opened last month. The $5 million project was intended to improve mobility and reduce congestion by providing a north-south corridor connecting State Highway 6 at the Riverstone Subdivision to U.S. Highway 90A. University Boulevard North is one of several projects included in the Fort Bend County Mobility Program and the Transportation Improvement Program. DEVELOPMENT NOTEBOOK: US90A commuter rail deemed feasible The Gulf Coast Rail District (GCRD) Board of Directors, which includes Stafford Mayor Leonard Scarcella, determined that commuter rail from Missouri City/Stafford into Houston is feasible. Harris County, the City of Houston, and Fort Bend County created the Gulf Coast Rail District (GCRD) under authority granted by the State of Texas in Section 171 of the Transportation Code, and one of its missions is to increase mobility and access in the area.
The estimated cost of the US90A commuter rail is $2.2 billion, although funding hasn’t been secured for it. Scarcella has been working with two U.S. Representatives from Houston – Al Green (D) and John Culberson, (R), on the possibility of federal funding for the project. Lake Olympia set to add new homes Houston-based Gateway Homes plans on adding 400 homes in Lake Olympia’s Olympia Estates, pending approval of the lots by Missouri City council.
Ron Henry, a sales representative with Gateway, said the homes will start in the mid $180,000s and could begin construction before the start of 2015. The city is set to expand Vicksburg Parkway to Olympia Parkway, and Gateway will build in that area. Henry said there could be some commercial development in the area, but Gateway is a residential builder. --Michael Sudhalter

Fort Bend Chamber receives 5-star rating We are very pleased and proud to announce that the United States Chamber of Commerce has awarded the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce with 5-Star Accreditation for its sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community. With 7,077 chambers in the United States, 207 of these are accredited with only 82 receiving a 5-Star designation. Accreditation terms are valid for five years. By earning Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a chamber shows its dedication to: • Reviewing, improving, and promoting strong business practices • Recognizing leadership and outstanding contributions to the community • Supporting the principles of free enterprise and promoting pro-growth policies at
federal, state, and local levels • Establishing best practices and staying in-step with industry changes Accreditation is the only national program that recognizes chambers for their effective organizational procedures and community involvement. In order to receive Accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs, and technology. We began this process last year and have diligently been working to achieve this substantial goal. Being recognized as one of the top chambers in the nation is a significant honor. We are extremely proud to be the only 5-Star Accredited chamber in the Greater Houston region. Meeting the highest standards in the Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal H December 2014
industry shows that we have established the necessary processes and measures to bring value to our membership. This achievement would not be possible without the support of our members and the leaders in our community, as well as the fantastic culture and team we have established within the Chamber office. The 5-Star designation illuminates Fort Bend County as a place with a thriving economy and community, a place that the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce is proud to represent and be a part of. Local chambers are rated Accredited, 3-Stars, 4-Stars, or 5-Stars. The final determination is made by the Accrediting Board, a committee of U.S. Chamber board members. 5-Star Accreditation is awarded to those chambers that have gone above and beyond the minimum standards.
