Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Michael Sudhalter Editor

I

t’s difficult to believe that we’re already in the market for a new calendar. With all of my holiday gifts purchased, the toughest question I need to ask myself is – what theme should I choose for my next calendar. This is a great time of the year to relax, enjoy family and friends and count our blessings. And regardless of which holiday(s) we choose to celebrate, it’s also an optimal time to put our feet up and read the Fort Bend-Katy Business Journal. We’ve got a great cover story on the dedicated staff at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Please remember that hospital employees are working and helping to safeguard our health while we enjoy our holiday dinners and parties. While they’re doing that, you can rest safe and reflect on an excellent 2015. The good news? Two Thousand and Sixteen will be even better! Sincerely, Michael Sudhalter

Building A Solid Foundation to House Your Retirement

P

lanning is the key to long-term success in any field. It’s no different in the retirement planning field – the most solid plans (and homes) are built on solid foundations rather than guesses. At the start of the New Year, everyone wants to predict what the market will do for the year. Keep in mind that anyone’s prediction is really just his or her best guess. Is that the type of foundation that you’d like to lay for your retirement home? Predictions look at numbers and research (at least we hope that they do!). When you invest in a prediction, you are taking a risk on someone’s best guess. Based off the historical data of highs and lows in the market, longterm projection for sustainability is risky business. Wouldn’t you prefer to have an advisor who will help you create a realistic income plan to last as long as your retirement does? At Roberts Wealth Management, you are more than just a number. You are a person who has worked hard and deserves the best.

For us, planning consists of finding out who you are, what you want and need, and then finding tools to make sure you that you reach your goal. Your goal may be to travel, spend more time with family, April R. Roberts, J.D. volunteer, start a new business, or simply have more leisure time. Having a solid foundation for retirement income helps you to reach any of these goals. As my father (and, the founder of our company), Paul Roberts, would say, “at Roberts Wealth Management, we’re into planning, not predictions.” Our 3-StepReview (Taxes, Income, and Risk) helps us lay the foundation to fiercely protect your

retirement income so you can live the life that you want. Our interest lies in learning about you and your family; educating you about your current situation, and presenting a plan that will help you reach your goals. The bottom line is that we enjoy planning with our clients so that they can leave our office with a confident smile because they know that they have a solid foundation for their retirement home. We understand that finding the right advisor for you isn’t easy. Email us or give us a call and let’s schedule your 3-Step Complimentary Review. At the end of this discovery interview (where you interview us, and we interview you to determine if our values match), we’ll offer you 1) a retirement income plan; 2) a risk analysis; and 3) a simple one page financial plan. Why delay? Let’s start building a strong foundation for you today.

At Roberts Wealth Management, we realize that you have worked hard for your money. We will work just as hard to help you protect and grow it. Finally Home groundbreaking on Veterans Day

A

Veterans Day U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Charles R. Landry Jr. and his family will always remember as they join representatives from Operation FINALLY HOME, Tilson Home, Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land and the local Richmond community to celebrate the groundbreaking at the site of the family’s new custom-built, mortgage-free home located at 13310 Lake Ridge Drive in Richmond, Texas. Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land General Sales Manager Mark Kolon participated in the event and said, “The earth we stand on is no different than that of any other dirt in Ft. Bend County. However, to us… the individuals here, and the Landry Family it is very special. This land represents tremendous sacrifices and the spirit of many to honor a hero.” The groundbreaking ceremony marks the start of construction on the home to be completed in 2016. In addition, Mark Kolon announced Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land had committed another $75,000 donation to Operation Finally Home towards a second home to be built for a wounded veteran in Ft. Bend County. “All of us at Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land feel privileged and blessed to have the opportunity to work with such an outstanding organization such as Operation Finally Home. They do so much for our nation’s heroes and their families”, said Mark Kolon. About U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Charles R. Landry Jr. Landry joined the U.S. Army in June 2002 and was stationed at the U.S. Army Garrison (USAG) Schweinfurt in Schweinfurt, Germany. While stationed in Germany, Landry deployed to Iraq multiple times. During his first deployment he experienced many firefights and vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs). He suffered concussions from being knocked unconscious during rocketpropelled grenade (RPG) and improvised explosive device (IED) attacks. During his second deployment his entire unit suffered many casualties, which took a toll on his physical and mental health. He deployed for his third tour to Iraq in October 2009, spending 12 months under rocket attacks

6

while he was stationed near a main supply route. As a result of Landry’s 39 total months in combat, he suffers from a traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder, and posttraumatic headaches. He medically retired from the military in July 2015. Landry is ready to make a new start with his wife, Kathleen, and their two children. The family is expecting a third child in January 2016. Landry hopes to pursue a degree in Radiology Technology and would like to eventually work with the VA to help other veterans like him. About Operation FINALLY HOME Operation FINALLY HOME was established in 2005 as a nonpartisan/ nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. In 2015 Operation FINALLY HOME is celebrating 10 years of providing custom-built, mortgage-free homes to America’s military heroes and the widows of the fallen who have sacrificed so much to defend our freedom and values. DISCOVERY Next, the parties may gather information and evidence through “discovery”. This process involves responding to written questions from the other party, exchanging documents relevant to the case, and taking depositions of parties and witnesses. SETTLEMENT The parties may attempt to negotiate a settlement before trial. While most lawsuits settle, all lawsuits should be defended as though trial will occur. TRIAL Your case may be heard before a jury or a judge. At trial, both sides are provided an opportunity to present evidence, call witnesses and testify. Afterwards, the judge or the jury will reach a decision. No one looks forward to being sued, but knowing the process and having the right legal representation can lessen the anxiety of defending a lawsuit. Dustin Fessler is an attorney in the Sugar Land office of Roberts Markel Weinberg Butler Hailey PC where he handles corporate, commercial and real estate litigation.

eing sued is frustrating and can cause anxiety, but knowing what to expect can make the experience more tolerable.

SERVICE OF THE LAWSUIT You will learn you have been sued when a process server or officer delivers a copy of the lawsuit to you. The lawsuit sets out the facts from the plaintiff’s perspective and includes a demand for relief, such as money damages or a demand to stop taking certain actions. FILING AN ANSWER Even if you believe that the plaintiff’s lawsuit is frivolous, DON’T IGNORE IT. You have limited time to answer the lawsuit, and you may want to consult an attorney about pleading certain defenses. If you do not answer, the plaintiff may prevail by default. Dustin C. Fessler

Strong Community Support for AccessHealth’s Heart of Fort Bend

HCC Foundation and Golden Bank partnership highlighted during milestone celebration

D

uring its 30th Anniversary celebration, Golden Bank, N.A. toasted a new partnership with the Houston Community College Foundation (HCCF) designed to support student success. The bank recently established the Golden Bank Scholarship through the Foundation to help low-income students pay for tuition, books and fees. “It is always a great thing to invest in the future of young people and we hope the scholarship program offered by Golden Bank will help with their growth,” said Dr. Joe Huang, president and CEO of Golden Bank, which operates five branches in the Greater Houston area. The $4,000 gift has been awarded to four students, $1,000 each that will be split into two semesters. Petroleum Engineering Technology student Helina Aycheh and Information Health Technology student Azeezat Adekanmbi were among those who attended the celebration and received certificates. “Receiving a scholarship from the Golden Bank has been instrumental in my success,” said Adekanmbi. “It has provided me the means to continue my education at HCC. This is an investment in my future and for that I am grateful.”

8

Aycheh, an international student from Ethiopia, always dreamed of getting an education in the U.S., but her journey to HCC has been difficult. “There were times I was afraid I may have to quit and give up on my dream,” said Aycheh. “You have no idea what this scholarship means to me. This scholarship will help pay for my tuition and books. But more importantly, it gives me hope to keep going forward and work harder towards my goal.” HCC Foundation Board Member Alice Chen was instrumental in forging the partnership with Golden Bank on behalf of Houston Community College. Chen proudly said, “We are honored to partner with Golden Bank to provide scholarships for HCC students and look forward to building on this important new relationship in Houston’s banking community.” “We are so grateful to Golden Bank for this generous gift on behalf of students and the opportunities this scholarship will make possible for them,” said Carme Williams, executive director, HCC Foundation. The HCC Foundation has dozens of scholarships available to students. For information on how to apply, visit hccsfoundation.org.

undreds of local residents and representatives from more than 30 local businesses gathered on October 29 for AccessHealth’s 2nd Annual Heart of Fort Bend. This year’s event was another success, surpassing last year’s inaugural event by 77% in net proceeds raised to help provide quality, affordable health care to the uninsured and underinsured in our community. “We are so grateful to this generous Fort Bend community for such a strong showing of support,” said AccessHealth CEO, Carol Edwards. “Event proceeds will help us to serve more patients, increasing health outcomes for more of our county’s most vulnerable residents. We are honored that so many share our commitment to increasing access to care.” Event Co-Chairs, Holly Kaminga and Patti Parish-Kaminski, worked tirelessly for months alongside a dedicated committee to plan the event which honored Allison and Cassandra Wen of Safari Texas Ranch. The Wens have generously supported AccessHealth for many years and were recognized at the event in a tribute video with clips of County Judge Bob Hebert, Pat Hebert, Dee Koch and Richmond Mayor Evelyn Moore sharing words of appreciation about the couple’s many contributions to the county. State Representative John Zerwas, M.D. served as the event emcee. The highlight of the evening was the retelling of four patient testimonies read aloud from the stage by AccessHealth providers − each a story of bravery in the midst of hardship − and each an example of how physical and mental health needs are met every day at AccessHealth. continued, on page 10

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital earns top grade for patient safety

H

ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital once again earned an “A” for patient safety in the Fall 2015 Hospital Safety Score ratings program. The Hospital Safety Score uses performance measures from a broad range of government and industry organizations – including the American Hospital Association, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others – to grade hospitals on how well they protect patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections while in the hospital. More than 2,500 U.S. hospitals are rated twice each year on 28 measures of publicly available safety data. The survey is overseen by a panel of leading physicians and hospital safety experts from around the country. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital was one of 773 hospitals nationwide – less than one-third of those surveyed – to earn an A grade in survey results released this month. “Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s A grade is a powerful reminder of its commitment to putting patient safety above all else, and we are pleased to recognize the persistent efforts of your clinicians and staff to protect your patients,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, which administers the Hospital Safety Score.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s ongoing patient safety effort includes the development of detailed protocols and best practices focusing on a wide range of safety risks, along with in-depth training, ongoing communication and regularly scheduled audits to ensure that staff members are aware of and are following proper safety processes. “Patient safety is central to our mission, and we are proud of our results,” says Chris Siebenaler, CEO at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Our success depends on the

daily actions of our physicians, nurses, technicians and other staff members, and our A grade from the Hospital Safety Score survey shows that we are making a very real difference in keeping our patients safe while they are under our care.” For more information about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit houstonmethodist.org/sugarland or call 281.274.7500 for a physician referral. Austin students enjoyed lunch with Spanish pop music band

D

VICIO is a band of five friends who accomplished overnight stardom in Spain with their hit single “Paraiso”. The group is hoping to be the next PopRock sensation — with a combination of talent, dedication and of course, good looks. The group’s talent is apparent with their full band ensemble and song writing skills. Their passion for music is evident and the group is now focused on taking the United States by storm with their recent “Lunch Time US Tour.” As part of this tour, Dvicio visited Austin High School on October 19 for an amazing opportunity for the students and for the group. Andres said,” This is one of those days that you will never forget.” The reason for this

was when the group arrived in the auditorium at Austin High School, it looked like a Texas Homecoming football pep rally- something the band and never seen before – the drumline was playing and the cheerleaders and Austin Angels dance team had made a tunnel from them to run through on their way to the stage. While on the stage, Dvicio was treated to another Texas tradition, the Homecoming garter, since it was Homecoming week at Austin. The event was organized by Senora Jennifer Chong, AP Spanish teacher and Senor Adrian Rodriguez, the choir teacher. The benefits of their visit were not only for the students to be exposed to their music but for the Spanish students to get an opportunity to meet the group that has been helping them with the cultural portion of the AP Spanish test. The AP Spanish Language and Culture course has been designed to provide advanced

high schools students with a rich and rigorous opportunity to study the language and culture of the Spanish-speaking world. Senora Jennifer Chong, one of the AP Spanish teachers at Austin High School took the task of teaching Spanish to a new level last year, when she through multimedia (in particular Google Hangout) connected the Spanish classes at Austin with Dvicio. Due to the persistence of Senora Chong, Dvicio made Austin High School a major stop on their ”Lunch Time US Tour”. Senora Chong had this to say about the experience, ““Students have made global connections through music and language learning while creating memories that will last a lifetime. To witness the excitement on the students faces and hear them using the language was incredible. Knowing that this was a wonderful occasion for all involved, including the band made it very special.”

The school also features security codecontrolled door locking and computerized check-in and classroom surveillance, ensuring parents have peace of mind when dropping their child off. And, with Children’s Lighthouse Learning Centers’ Internet classroom video monitoring system, parents can even watch their children from the comfort of their own home or while at work. Children’s Lighthouse Learning Centers’ mission is to promote positive development of young children in all areas of growth including social, emotional, intellectual, physical and creative development. usy Missouri City families can now access high-quality neighborhood healthcare with the recent opening of the Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center in Sienna Plantation. Conveniently located within the Sienna Plantation Village on Highway 6 and Sienna Parkway, the $7.4 million facility provides 24-hour emergency care, with coordinated access to higher levels of care, as well as advanced imaging and diagnostic laboratory services. Just a few steps from the Convenient Care Center, residents can access Memorial Hermann Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation – Sienna Plantation for sports injury and movement rehabilitation. This spring, Memorial Hermann Medical Group primary care physicians will join the Convenient Care Center in Sienna Plantation to complete the model of neighborhood access to essential medical services, all in a single location. “We are excited to open the most comprehensive healthcare facility in Missouri City and feel that it is a tremendous benefit for patients and families whether they are experiencing an emergent condition, or simply needing to see a physician for a less urgent condition,” says Greg Haralson, CEO, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, which oversees services at this

location. “The convenience of providing the services of an ER, along with primary care physicians, imaging, lab, and physical therapy in such close proximity, has been well-received by this community.”

NEIGHBORHOOD HEALTH CARE The facility in Sienna Plantation is similar to the three Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Centers in Katy, Pearland and Summer Creek. Each facility is an extension of many of Memorial Hermann’s high-quality services offered in one convenient location. By bringing together critical healthcare options and coordinating their access, Memorial Hermann can care for residents of all ages in emergencies as well as those with routine medical needs. If a Sienna Plantation resident sees a specialist in the Texas Medical Center and needs follow-up lab tests, an X-ray, ultrasound or CT scan, all they need to do is bring their physician’s prescription to

the Convenient Care Center. Or maybe it’s time for an annual mammogram? The Convenient Care Center offers breast screenings using 3-D breast tomosynthesis, which detects smaller tumors at an earlier stage.

24/7 EMERGENCY CARE The Convenient Care Center provides around-the-clock care by affiliated, boardcertified emergency medicine physicians and emergency-trained nurses. With little or no wait time, patients can receive immediate attention for emergencies that range from minor to life-threatening. David C. Wong, M.D., is one of the 10 affiliated, board-certified emergency medicine physicians staffing the Convenient Care Center. A resident of Missouri City, he has worked in ERs for 11 years. He says he chose to be an emergency physician because it was the closest thing to being a super hero without actually having super powers.

The Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center at Sienna Plantation Emergency Room features a fullyequipped trauma room. Team members shown here include Josephine Johnston, RN, Ma Jocelyn Garriel, RN, David C. Wong, M.D., and Heena Ali, RN.

“Emergency medicine physicians have the opportunity to make impactful meaningful change in a very short period of time and that’s very rewarding,” says Dr. Wong. The Convenient Care Center features eight patient rooms, including a trauma room and a decontamination room with an exterior entrance. Onsite imaging services and a laboratory with the full testing capabilities of a hospital means patients can receive a prompt diagnosis and care. For patients who need more extensive or longer-term care, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital is a short drive away. Should an even higher level of care be required, patients have access to the vast resources of the entire Memorial Hermann Health System. Additionally, through the extensive network of Memorial Hermann-affiliated physicians, patients can receive referrals for follow-up care with an appropriate specialist. Electronic patient records are easily accessible to Memorial Hermann-affiliated physicians, so there’s no need to retrieve copies of medical records, images and test results for the follow-up visit.

ONSITE IMAGING SERVICES Staffed and equipped for high-quality diagnostic imaging services, the Convenient Care Center offers general X-rays, CT scans, ultrasound and diagnostic mammography using the newest 3-D tomosynthesis technology. A dedicated area for breast services provides women with a spa-like atmosphere. “Breast tomosynthesis allows more accurate evaluation of lesions by enabling better differentiation between overlapping tissues,” says Tasha Peters, director of outpatient imaging for Memorial Hermann Sugar Land and the Convenient Care Center. Additionally, tomosynthesis has proven itself in reducing patient recalls for additional views. Studies indicate that this new technology is particularly beneficial for patients with dense breast tissue. Fellowship-trained MD Anderson breast radiologists interpret all breast screenings. A physician prescription is not required for a mammogram and most major insurances are accepted. Mammograms are available by appointment at 877.40.MAMMO. CONTINUES...

FAST AND EASY ACCESS TO LAB SERVICES The Convenient Care Center also offers a full-service laboratory for routine diagnostic and recurring needs. It is the only blood draw center near Sienna Plantation. Walk-ins are welcome. With a commitment to fast and highly accurate results, the Convenient Care Center laboratory, like all Memorial Hermann laboratories, maintains mandatory and voluntary certifications and accreditations. Some of these include accreditations by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the College of American Pathologists.

TREATMENT FOR COMMON MEDICAL CONDITIONS This spring, when Memorial Hermann Medical Group primary care physicians join the Convenient Care Center, nearby residents will reap the full benefit of onestop, highly coordinated access to essential medical services. These primary care physicians will treat common medical conditions and can administer physicals and vaccinations. If required, they can refer patients to specialists. And because all medical information is centralized and streamlined within the Memorial Hermann Health System, patients can experience true coordinated care.

CONVENIENCE FOR BUSY LIFESTYLES Communities where Memorial Hermann currently operates Convenient Care Centers are extremely positive about the availability of neighborhood health care. “Our patients say they appreciate the ease of scheduling appointments, the convenience of being able to drive up, park and walk in, and that our staff is friendly and professional,” says Dan Wolterman, CEO and president of Memorial Hermann Health System. “Memorial Hermann has dedicated resources to the Convenient Care Centers where primary care (coming soon to Sienna Plantation), emergency care services, lab and imaging

services are all available in the community making access to health care easier for patients,” adds Dr. Wong. “Combining these into a single resource also makes it possible for Memorial Hermann to help direct the patient to the most appropriate and cost-effective resource for care as navigating health care for the individual patient can be confusing and challenging.” The Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center in Sienna Plantation is located at 8780 Highway 6, Suite B, in Missouri City. While the ER operates 24/7, other services are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

HCC Chancellor named 2015 NCMPR Pacesetter of the Year Congratulations to Houston Community College (HCC) Chancellor Dr. Cesar Maldonado. The National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR) named him the 2015 Pacesetter of the Year during the recent District 4 Conference. District 4 represents several states, 60 community colleges, and 289 members. The coveted award recognizes a president or CEO at a two-year community or technical college who has demonstrated leadership and support in the area of college communications and marketing. “I am honored to receive this top recognition from NCMPR,” said Dr. Maldonado. “The award is proof the communications team at Houston Community College is dedicated to sharing the stories of student success.” Maldonado has been at HCC – one of the largest community colleges in the nation – since May 2014. One of his highest goals is to meet the Houston workforce needs. In just 18 months at the helm of HCC, Maldonado has achieved part of that goal through the establishment of 12 “Centers of Excellence,” which are located near businesses and provide specialized training for that particular industry.

28

“Businesses and industry are excited by the model and are sharing resources and money with the college to support these initiatives,” conference publications stated. “Such programs are defining new pathways for student success.” The NCMPR recognized two other individuals for Communicator of the Year and Rising Star Award. Joe Huff III, NCMPR District 4 Director, noted this year’s award winners exemplified the professionalism and dedication required to ensure community colleges continue to provide the educational opportunities needed for individuals looking to jumpstart careers, transition to a higher level of learning or move up the corporate ladder of a chosen profession.

Johnson Development Promotes Sams to Jordan Ranch General Manager The Johnson Development Corp. has promoted Steve Sams to general manager of its newest development, Jordan Ranch. Sams joined the company in 2012 as development manager of Cross Creek Steve Sams Ranch, a 3,200-community in Fulshear, and was most recently senior project manager at the development. In that role, he directed overall development, marketing and sales of the community, representing the company to builders, government agencies, public officials and homeowner associations. In his new position, Sams will be responsible for developing Jordan Ranch, a 1,350-acre community in Fulshear. Crews broke ground in Jordan Ranch Oct. 20. “It is exciting to build this community from the ground up and watch it evolve from rice fields into a place that thousands of people will call home, a place that is also one of the Houston area’s fastest-growing corridors,” Sams said. Home sales in Jordan Ranch are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2016, with designs priced from the $290,000s. Prior to joining The Johnson Development Corp., Sams accrued extensive land development experience with both a nationally recognized homebuilder and a local municipal engineering firm. A licensed engineer in the state of Texas, Sams holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He and wife Julie have two daughters. For more information on Jordan Ranch, visit www.jordanranchtexas.com.

Count on us when minutes Count In a cardiac emergency, a fast, comprehensive response can be the difference between life and death. That’s why our Heart & Vascular Center offers the most advanced cardiac care program in the area. In fact, we’re the only hospital in the Fort Bend area to provide 24-hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week interventional cardiology and cardiac surgery services. Also, because we consistently exceed national standards in the most critical components of cardiac care, we’re a nationally accredited chest pain center. In a cardiac emergency, there’s only one place you need to be — Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. That’s the difference between practicing medicine and leading it.
