Where you shop and eat are important

W

ith Thanksgiving behind us, most people now have their sights set on Christmas. It’s the gift-giving season and a time when retailers expect to make the lion’s share of their annual income. As you prepare to start, resume or conclude your holiday shopping, I ask that you please consider shopping local. Don’t think of it as a chamber mantra or a cliché you hear this time of year. Shopping local is vital to the survival of many family-owned businesses. It’s also vital to the economic base of our communities. The taxes paid stay here and support the services and amenities that we all need and depend on. The money spent in local stores supports local families. Our friends and neighbors are the business owners. When we buy from them, we not only help them make a living, but their employees (also friends and neighbors) as well. We help fund music lessons, sports camps, Scouting events, ballet lessons, college funds, orthodontics, healthcare and everything else a growing family needs. While you might be able to save a few bucks and some time by going to big box stores and national chains, you won’t be making an investment in your community. You’ll be supporting minimum wage jobs and watching a handful of billionaires get richer off of each dollar you “save” by buying from them. Soon, all you will have are big box stores and retail chains. You limit your choices and the diversity of products and services when you neglect the local mom-and-pops for the “convenience” of shouldering your way through large crowds and then toiling in long checkout lines.

If you think you’re saving a lot of money, do the math. Look at the time you spend getting through a big box store and compare it to what you make per hour on the job. When you think of it that way, have you really saved enough to make it worth the hassle? I’m not saying big box retailers are evil. They have their purpose and place. I’m just saying that people you know – friends, neighbors, fellow parishioners, families of your children’s classmates, etc. – are depending on you to help make their holidays brighter as you explore your shopping options. It’s not only retailers who are counting on your business but restaurateurs as well. Although they are not as dependent upon the holidays as much as retailers, local restaurants are dependent on local customers. Nothing’s better than the fresh, homemade goodness of a made-from-scratch meal in an intimate setting, especially compared to the fast-food rat race and the cheap, processed foods that we all hungrily wolf down and forget. If I might offer a nice, local suggestion for a fine dining experience, consider a night out at Texas De Brazil. You can read all about this fine dining experience inside this issue of the Fort Bend/Katy Business Journal. We thank you for being one of our readers and hope you will have a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year! Sincerely, Joe Southern Editor, Fort Bend/Katy Business Journal

Would you like to legally, morally & ethically disinherit the IRS?

T

here are numerous ways to avoid running out of money during retirement. Chief among them is not paying the government more than you need to. Now, I am talking about tax efficiency, not tax evasion. The difference between the two is about twenty years, and we want to be on the right side of those twenty years, so let’s look at how we can legally be tax smart. While no one likes paying taxes, when the income faucet is on, they are less painful. But, what about when you retire, your income sources (social security, pension, etc.) aren’t sufficient to cover your lifestyle and you have a set amount of retirement savings to cover the difference? Imagine that those retirement savings are in a big bucket and your bucket has holes — namely investment risk, fees and taxes. You want to keep your bucket full (maintain principal). Now, doesn’t

it become even more paramount to minimize the size of that tax hole? In fact, if any money leaks out, wouldn’t you prefer that it lands in your hands? Thus, tax planning is April R. Roberts, J.D. an important aspect of retirement income planning for two reasons: 1) we want to sustain your retirement income savings and income for you and your spouse’s lifetime; and 2) we want as much of it to stay in your family’s hands (instead of the IRS) as possible when you pass away. One way that I ask my clients to do tax planning is by imagining four tax buckets:

1 Taxable/Income 2 Tax Deferred 3 Income Tax Free 4 Income and Estate Tax Free The goal of good tax planning, and a part of good retirement income planning is to move assets as far to the bottom of this list as possible. Let’s briefly discuss each of these buckets. The first bucket is the taxable bucket, I also call this your income bucket. If you are still working, and your boss knocked on your door tomorrow and said, “Hey, Sally, I’m going to give you a 20 percent raise” would you be excited or would you worry about paying taxes? Would you tell your boss, “Thank you, but I don’t want to pay the additional taxes so please don’t give me a raise?” You would take the money! My dad, who was a CPA for 20 years used to tell his clients “go make all the money you can and let me worry about the taxes.” Most people continued, on page 4

would agree with this sentiment. So, what we want to do is take the income that someone is willing to give us and also take the income that we need. But, in retirement, it becomes very important that we don’t take more than that. Why? Because if we do, we are paying unnecessary taxes and depleting our retirement income savings. Now, let’s visit what may be falling into this taxable bucket that we don’t want to fall here. If you are receiving dividends, interest and capital gains on taxable investment accounts and not using them for retirement income, guess what? You are still paying taxes on them — even if they are being “reinvested”. Remember that we want to separate your retirement income from your retirement savings for good retirement planning. If you are not taking these sources as income, they should fall into the savings bucket. If you are paying unnecessary taxes on them (because you don’t use them as retirement income) then they are falling into the income bucket for tax purposes and depleting your retirement savings bucket. Also, any distributions from a qualified retirement plan (401K, IRA, 403(B), TSP, etc.) would fall into this taxable/income bucket. These are two areas to consider closely for tax efficiency in retirement. Oh, and you do know that your social security is taxed, right? Most people pay taxes on somewhere from 50% to 85% of their social security. The amount you pay in taxes is determined by the other income that you receive. So, managing this first bucket could allow you to pay less in taxes on your social security. Not a bad idea, is it? If you think that you are having sources of retirement savings fall into this bucket that you don’t need as income, wouldn’t it make sense to move those to the next bucket, the tax-deferred bucket? The second bucket, the tax deferred bucket simply allows you to defer taxes until you take distributions from it. Your qualified retirement plans, as well as any annuities and cash value life insurance would fall here. When you are younger and earning good income, your CPA likely recommended that you save some money for retirement in your 401(K) or another type of qualified retirement plan so that you could avoid paying taxes on that income at that time. The thinking behind this is that you will be in a lower tax bracket in retirement so when you distributed the assets, you’d pay less in taxes. One misnomer of this idea is that

the assets should have grown larger, so you may have a larger pot of money to pay taxes on in retirement. Also, sometimes, people don’t need income from these plans or they have saved too much in them, but at age 70 1/2, the government requires you to start taking income. This is called your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD), which is a calculation based on your age and the amount you have in your qualified retirement plan. As you age, the calculation increases. If you happen to be one of the individuals who won’t need your RMD in retirement, we can implement tax strategies to move your IRA to the next bucket, the tax free bucket. This is where a good retirement income planner and a good CPA come in handy. The third bucket is for assets that are income tax free — this means that once set up, you won’t have to pay income taxes on them during your lifetime. The most commonly known vehicle for accomplishing this is a Roth IRA. Other options for this bucket include municipal bonds, appreciation of capital assets held until death and life insurance (if properly structured). Now, while income tax free is wonderful, income and estate tax free is even better. Some retirees receive enough money in their pension and social security that they will never touch their retirement income savings. I call this their “never” money. If you have never money, you probably should investigate a plan to move it into the income tax free bucket, even better, you may want to consider moving it to the fourth bucket, the income and estate tax free bucket. This fourth bucket is the holy grail — income and estate tax free, but it’s also a little more complicated as it combines life insurance and a trust. It’s called an irrevocable life insurance trust, commonly called an ILIT. It’s worth mentioning that good retirement income planning and good tax planning should involve conversations between your financial professional, your CPA and your Estate attorney. If these three individuals aren’t talking, then it’s likely either issues or money may be slipping through your fingers. I like to remind my clients that I’m the quarterback of their finances. While I can’t be your financial planner, your CPA and your attorney, I can make sure that we’re all talking and trying to sure up any cracks. If you’re interested in seeing whether our income tax free strategies are right for you, call us for an appointment today. You’ll be glad you did!

Right on the Money

Sugar Land lands another accolade as nation’s best

T

op-notch services, plenty to do and a tax-friendly climate recently earned Sugar Land recognition by Money Magazine as the “Best Place to Retire” in the South. “One critical factor to consider: how much of a bite local taxes will take out of your nest egg,” wrote Sarah Max, of Money Magazine. “This year we went in search of the taxfriendliest small cities in the country—places big enough to have the amenities that retirees prize, such as access to great health care and recreation, but still affordable and compact enough to be manageable.” Sugar Land’s strong focus on economic development and tourism enables the city to provide quality services while maintaining one of the state’s lowest tax rates. An example cited by the evaluation team was the transformation of the historic 26-acre Imperial refinery into Imperial Market, a redevelopment project that will include shops, offices, restaurants, a boutique hotel and a cinema – as well as the now-open Fort

Bend Children’s Discovery Center and the future Sugar Land heritage museum and visitor center. Excerpts from Money Magazine’s review of Sugar Land follow: • “Sugar Land offers a relatively low cost of living with a high quality of life. The healthy business base— major employers include Minute Maid and First Data—translates to some of the lowest property taxes in a state where such taxes can run high.” • In addition to Constellation Field, large amounts of green space and high-quality health care: “The opening of Sugar Land Town Square in the mid-2000s gave the city a much-needed downtown hub. It’s now home to city hall, restaurants, and stores. A new performing arts venue, the Smart Financial

Centre, will open early next year.” The city has achieved its sustainable, strong local economy through an aggressive, focused economic development program that creates opportunities for new business investment and jobs. Sugar Land now has more than 64,500 jobs and is home to high-profile regional and international corporations housed in more than 25 million square feet of commercial space, including more than 15 Fortune 500 companies with a significant presence. Further, Sugar Land’s assessed commercial valuation has more than doubled in just over a decade—increasing by over $2 billion. “Our selection as the top destination in the South is another indication that using revenue from tourism and commercial sources to reduce property taxes for our homeowners has been a successful strategy,” said City Manager Allen Bogard. “We are proud that Money Magazine has recognized what we already know – Sugar Land is one of the country’s premier destinations to live, work and play.”

The show will feature approximately 200 local and regional businesses in the home improvement and landscaping industries along with 20 professional speakers on two stages. Visitors to the show can expect to see the latest technologies and services in the areas of kitchen and bath remodeling, windows, swimming pools, spas, outdoor kitchens, patios, flooring, furniture, décor, landscaping and so much more. “This is not for your do-it-yourselfer, it’s more for people who require more expertise that doing basic plumbing around the house,” Wood said. Among the speakers will be topiary artist Pearl Fryar, personal organization pro and author Lisa Giesler, Chef Michelle Morris, master builder/ remodeler and certified green building professional Stephen Hann, and Molly Fowler, The Dining Diva. If for some reason the timing of the show doesn’t work, Texwood Shows has two more spring events coming up in the Houston area. The 10th annual Cy-Fair Home and Garden Show will be held Feb. 18-19 at the Berry Center and the 15th annual Spring Home and Garden show will take place April 1-2 in The Woodlands at the Waterway Marriott.

RE/MAX Southwest agents pose for a picture in honor of the agency’s 30th anniversary.

RE/MAX Southwest marks 30 years By Andrea Dillahunty Special to The Fort Bend Star

A

nyone who bought a home from one of the original five RE/MAX Southwest Owners and stayed put, their house would be paid for by

now. RE/MAX Southwest is celebrating 30 years in business. Back then, Frank DeCicco had the foresight to buy RE/MAX franchises for Texas. That was when RE/MAX was reshaping the way real estate was done. The five owners recognized Houston’s growth toward historic Sugar Land and in 1986, bought Sugar Land’s first RE/MAX franchise. Sugar Land became known as a Houston bedroom community of deluxe living with a mix of large estates to average homes that were surrounded by lush landscaping, top ranked schools, and everything a planned community could offer. Sugar Land was close enough for the professional to get to work with ease yet let them escape the big city hustle and bustle, to a more environmentally friendly and welcoming lifestyle for their family. RE/MAX Southwest, with a handful of agents, recognized Sugar Land’s path for fast growth. They set out to make RE/MAX Southwest Real Estate Agency a lasting legacy from a band of true believers. The goal was to sell southwest Houston with gusto. Betty Townes (one of RE/MAX Southwest’s original agents) said, “You don’t only work at RE/MAX Southwest … you live and breathe it.” Bill Moore (another veteran agent) stated, “We’re not only a viable business but, a strong family … all working toward the same goal with a passion for our clients’ real estate needs.” Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal H December 2016

Owners Bette Lemon and Jennifer Wang shared excitement and pride of being a part of the development of Sugar Land in the heart of Fort Bend County. They reminisced about the late, Dr. Gaylord Greenfield, one of the other forces that helped pull RE/MAX Southwest together. Lemon said, “Back then, we were small in numbers but, mighty in fortitude. Gaylord was truly an inspiration to our success.” The story is they started small, and expanded their offices several times before settling at 14905 Southwest Freeway. Broker/ partner Jennifer Wang stated, “We were busting at the seams by the year 2000, and relocated to our high visibility building, off 59 and Williams Trace, where we continue to thrive.” They said their vision for RE/MAX Southwest’s building was to offer the public and agents’ clients a one-stop-shop complete with mortgage company, insurance agencies, title company and even a pest control service. They continued to enjoy a great presence in Fort Bend County by, engaging and encouraging professional agents. RE/MAX Southwest was recognized as the No. 1 RE/MAX office in Texas for three consecutive years. “We’ve been serving Sugar Land and the Greater Houston area for 30 years because of our many top producers,” Lemon said. Several of the agents have been with the company more than 20 years. The owners attribute the longevity to there being strength in numbers and their agents’ compassion for their clients. RE/MAX Southwest’s success and long standing reputation in the community shows from continuous referrals and client loyalty. Its associates are the homegrown experts of the local market and can facilitate clients’ best moves to or from their next Texas property, residential or commercial.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital physical therapy residency program achieves national milestone

T

he board-certified physical and occupational therapists at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital do more than help patients improve mobility and return to active lifestyles. They are also training the next generation of specialized therapists in areas such as orthopedic physical therapy, sports physical therapy, athletic training and occupational therapy with a specialty in hand rehabilitation. Each year, the hospital’s post professional residency programs give licensed therapists and athletic trainers the opportunity to further their education. Residents are able to work alongside leading therapists who provide oneon-one education and mentoring in both clinical and classroom settings. Residents also work directly with some of the area’s leading surgeons and orthopedic and sports medicine specialists to develop, implement and measure patient outcomes. Each of the individual residency tracts is specially designed to provide unique experiences; for example, the sports and athletic training residencies participate in live, on-field activities with local high school, college and professional teams, and athletic training residents serve as assistant athletic trainers at area high schools. Houston Methodist Sugar Land is the only facility in the United States with fully accredited orthopedic physical therapy, sports physical therapy and athletic training programs in one location. The hospital’s athletic training residency program is one of just five programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) in the country. The occupational therapy residency in hand rehabilitation is the third in the nation to achieve candidacy status from the American Occupational Therapy Association. “Our faculty sets us apart from other residency programs,” said Toko Nguyen, physical therapy residency manager at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “No one else can offer the same caliber of instructors, all under one roof. All of our faculty members are experienced and knowledgeable, having all completed residency or fellowship training themselves. They enjoy teaching our residents how to

provide better, more effective therapy services to patients.” The fast-paced environment at Houston Methodist Sugar Land and Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine ensures that residents see a broad range of patients and conditions throughout the 12-month program. Improving clinical reasoning skills and treatment approaches are key elements; residents are typically ready to sit for their certified specialist exam upon completion of the program. “Our residents learn from a full range of clinical cases – from patients recovering from injury to those with long-term physical ailments or conditions,” said board-certified occupational therapist Peggy Boineau, who leads the hand therapy residency. “Through detailed classroom learning and work with patients, our residents master the latest and most sophisticated therapies in their chosen specialty. reflective of a national trend toward specialized physical therapy, with residencies and fellowships providing additional training and expertise in specific areas of study. “Young therapists today recognize the importance of focusing on a specialty,” said Nguyen. “Our program helps therapists further their studies and gain a deeper understanding of their chosen field. They leave here with excellent clinical reasoning skills along with the most advanced treatment techniques.” Today, physical therapists from around the country seek the opportunity to come to Houston Methodist Sugar Land, and the competition for acceptance into the program becomes more intense each year. “Graduates of our residency programs are highly sought after in the job market,” said Nguyen. “We have been developing topnotch clinicians for several years now, and our reputation is a real benefit to our residents.” For more information about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s therapy services and residency programs, visit houstonmethodist.org/sugarland-therapy or call 281-274-0123.

By participating in the “Get With the Guidelines” program, OakBend Medical Center is reviewed for 12 consecutive months and must have maintained a performance level of following key measures in treatment guidelines for at least 85 percent of the time. According to Rachel Castillo, development specialist with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, “We all know that OakBend is a great stroke hospital to have, especially in the growing community of Fort Bend. Jeff and Ann Council are not only involved with OakBend, they are involved with the American Heart Association’s Fort Bend Executive Committee and we want to get the word out not only about strokes but heart disease. We greatly appreciate Fort Bend and OakBend’s help with educating the community.” Jeff Council, President of the OakBend Medical Center’s Board of Directors, was present for the award ceremony. “This is certainly a great honor for our hospital, eight years of receiving this award from the American Heart Association. It reflects on the good things that we have going on here at our hospital. The excellent medical staff, the excellent nursing staff and the employees in general, show what OakBend Medical Center is doing and what we will continue to do and we are very humbled and proud to accept this award,” he said. M

emorial Hermann Katy Hospital recently celebrated volunteers, both past and present, who have supported the hospital’s operations throughout its 35year history of serving the Katy community. “The volunteers at Memorial Hermann Katy are just as instrumental as our employees and clinical staff. They show up with smiles and positive attitudes that help facilitate a comfortable and calming environment throughout our hospital,” said Jim Parisi, Senior Vice President and Chief Executive Officer of Memorial Hermann Katy. While the event recognized all those who have volunteered at the hospital over the past 35 years, it also recognized one special volunteer who has served the hospital since the program’s inception. Avadale Short began volunteering with the hospital shortly after it first opened on Pin Oak Road in 1981, and continues to volunteer today. She received her

10,000-hour pin at the celebration. “Avadale is a great example of how the Katy community supports one another. She has been a fixture within this hospital for over three decades, and we appreciate greatly her

continued commitment to the patients, staff, and our services,” said Heather Rojas, manager of volunteers at Memorial Hermann Katy. “We have many volunteers who’ve served at this hospital for more than 10 years and I think it reflects the neighborly attitude that many people in Katy possess.” The volunteer services program at Memorial Hermann Katy has more than 180 active members but they are always looking for others who would like to serve. Volunteers support both clinical and non-clinical areas, patient transportation, the gift shop and other areas.

We are proud ABM will call Sugar Land home.” An incentive package was created by the city’s Office of Economic Development and approved by the Sugar Land Development Corporation to secure the company in Sugar Land. COVER STORY

Texas de Brazil offers unique dining experience in Sugar Land Texas de Brazil, one of the nation’s premier Brazilian steakhouses, opened in Sugar Land at First Colony Mall in December of 2015. The restaurant embraces a time-honored tradition of churrasco-style cooking, which was adopted from the gauchos, or Brazilian cowboys of Rio Grande do Sol, a region in Southern Brazil. The menu features various cuts of perfectly seasoned beef, lamb, pork, chicken and sausage all slow-roasted over an open-flame and carved by the restaurant’s experienced gauchos. Additionally, Texas de Brazil boasts an extravagant gourmet salad area containing more than 50 fresh items such as grilled vegetables, imported cheeses, charcuterie, smoked salmon, creamy lobster bisque and many more mouthwatering variations of salads and traditional Brazilian sides. Accompanying the meat service are the celebrated Brazilian favorites: pão de queijo (cheese bread) and cinnamon and sugar bananas. Decadent

desserts, refreshing Brazilian cocktails and an award-winning wine list heavy in South American varietals, are also available to further enhance the dining experience. The concept differs from regular steakhouses, in that it features a fixed menu and price; therefore, the guests pay one flat rate and then can dine continuously, having as much or as little food as they desire. The desserts and beverages are sold a la carte, but aside from that the fixed price includes endless trips to the salad area and limitless meat servings. The service is also unique in that the gauchos are cooking the meat on the rotisserie grill and then bringing the meat straight from the flame to the guest to carve tableside. The guest is equipped with a card that is red on one side and green on the other. This card is used to indicate to the gauchos when they would like more meat. Red means they are good for now and green means they would like to have more options come by the table. Because of the style of service, the

guest is in complete control of the dining experience. They can start with the meat service, or with a trip to the salad area – there are no rules. The concept is also great for groups that are trying to adhere to a strict agenda and can’t spend hours at dinner, because the guest starts eating right away. There are no orders and then the extended waiting period while they prepare your dish in the back. The various options also ensure that there is something on the menu for everyone – even vegetarians. While Texas de Brazil is a steakhouse, their extravagant salad area with several hot and cold dishes makes it difficult for anti-carnivores to stay away. Each restaurant has a dedicated event manager that can help assist guests with large reservations and they even offer special packages for large groups. The Sugar Land location has two patios that are great for private dining and can be rented out at no additional cost to the guest. If the guest prefers to dine inside, they can also build large tables in the main dining room.

Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal H December 2016

“In 2013, we opened our CITYCENTRE location in Houston and after having much success we decided to expand into the Sugar Land market as well,” stated COO, Salim Asrawi. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to serve our authentic Southern Brazilian cuisine to the residents of Sugar Land and hope they will be as welcoming as Hoston has been.” While many believe Texas de Brazil dining is best experienced at the restaurant, the company also offers takeout and catering for offsite events. Takeout is available by the pound and the catering can be customized to allow for self-serve style or onsite grilling by the gauchos. The restaurant has a mobile grill powered by charcoal that can be added on the package at an additional cost.

For those that are not looking to indulge in the full dining experience, the restaurant also offers sampler plates at the bar. These plates feature a few select pieces of meat and the gooey cheese bread rolls. Lobster bisque and an antipasto platter is also on the bar menu and are great snacking options when guests are enjoying Happy Hour which is available every Monday-Friday from 4:30-7 p.m. The Happy Hour menu includes $3 domestic beer, $5 caipirinhas, $5 wellcocktails, $5 glasses of their private label Texas de Brazil wine and $7 martinis. The caipirinha is the most popular cocktail in Brazil and is made with the Brazilian national spirit, cachaça. Cachaça, is a spirit similar to rum, but is actually made from sugar cane juice versus molasses like rum. No Brazilian steakhouse experience is complete, without trying one of these iconic beverages. The first Texas de Brazil, opened its doors on Oct. 13, 1998, in Addison. The owners, along with native Brazilian and Director of Culinary, Evandro Caregnato, had dreams of bringing this culture north to the United States and their destination of choice was no other than cattleman’s land… Texas. Years later, Texas de Brazil is still family owned and operated and continues to expand both domestically and internationally

18

bringing the culture and feast of Brazil to millions of guests every year. The chain currently has 49 locations throughout the world, including international locations in Mexico City, Dubai, South Korea, Aruba, Puerto Rico and Trinidad. In 2017, the company plans on opening six more domestic locations and three more international locations in Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Texas de Brazil has experience exponential growth in the past five years, doubling the number of restaurants in the chain and making it the largest churrascaria chain in the world.
