Spotlight on UT Health Michael Sudhalter Editor
T
wo Thousand and Fifteen is in full swing, and hopefully, those New Year’s Resolutions you made a few weeks ago are still going strong. If it’s a health-related resolution, hopefully, Valentine’s Day chocolate won’t tempt you too much. As we enter February, we look at the importance of ever-improving technology in our lives – from finding travel directions to enhancing the way we communicate with our friends and family members. Business Journal contributor Subhrata Barot visited with the staff and faculty at UT Health in Houston to discuss how technology isn’t just enhancing lives – it’s saving them. Nursing students are learning skills that highlight “evidence-based patient care” and many of their graduates proudly represent their alma mater at some of the top hospitals in the Medical Center – and throughout the Houston area. In addition to Barot’s story on UT Health, we have an exciting February edition for you. • Great Harvest Bread Company opened last month in Sugar Land, and is now proudly serving its customers. • Kudos to the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce on achieving five-star accreditation with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. • Riverstone, a Johnson Development property, continues to throw as one of America’s top-rated master planned communities. Sincerely, Michael

The heart truth — free heart health screenings at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital first place. You can do that by managing risk factors: Reduce high blood pressure or cholesterol levels, quit smoking, lost weight if overweight or obese, and lead an active lifestyle. “The combination of living healthier, knowing your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers and taking medication if you need to is the formula for prevention,” Dr. Smith said.

hink of your heart as your body’s delivery system. It pumps out the good stuff—oxygenated and nutrientrich blood—to every inch of you via a network of arteries. But heart disease throws a wrench into things. “The most common form, coronary heart disease, is the No. 1 cause of death for both men and women in most countries,” said Dr. Toussaint Smith, board-certified cardiologist with Methodist Sugar Land Cardiology Associates. Coronary artery disease starts with artery damage caused by smoking, high blood pressure or a number of other factors. The damage triggers the buildup of plaque, which narrows the arteries and limits blood flow to the heart. If the heart can’t get the oxygen and nutrients it needs, it struggles to function properly. Worse yet, plaque can break loose and form a clot, causing a heart attack when blood supply is cut off. The best way to beat coronary artery disease? Never get it in the

Heart Basics. The pulmonary artery carries blood out to the lungs, where it is oxygenated. The pulmonary veins transport the oxygen-rich blood back to the heart. The aorta then distributes this oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Once depleted of oxygen, blood returns to the heart and the process restarts. • Aortic stenosis. When it comes to the arteries, the aorta is the main work horse. This main artery is responsible for carrying most of the blood to the body. In a condition called aortic stenosis, calcium deposits can build up in the aortic valve, causing it to narrow and limit blood flow. • Atrial fibrillation. In people with atrial fibrillation, the heart’s upper chambers beat erratically, causing an irregular pulse. When left untreated, it can double the risk of a heart-related death and dramatically increase the chance of having a stroke. • Heart failure. In some cases, the heart struggles to pump enough blood to the body. Heart failure is measured by ejection fraction (EF), the percentage of blood pushed out with each heartbeat. An EF under 40 may indicate heart failure. • Cardiomyopathy is a disease that causes the heart muscle to become enlarged or stiff. Both blood flow and maintaining a regular heartbeat become tough tasks. The condition can be inherited, or it can surface because of another medical condition, such as high blood pressure. U.S. Chamber of Commerce awards the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce with 5-Star Accreditation
®
T
he United States Chamber of Commerce has awarded the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce with 5-Star Accreditation for its sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community. With 7,077 chambers in the United States, 207 of these are accredited with only 82 receiving a 5-Star designation. Accreditation terms are valid for five years. By earning Accreditation from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a chamber shows its dedication to: • Reviewing, improving, and promoting strong business practices • Recognizing leadership and outstanding contributions to the community • Supporting the principles of free enterprise and promoting pro-growth policies at federal, state, and local levels • Establishing best practices and staying in-step with industry changes “Accreditation validates a chamber as having programs that benefit their local economy and for positively influencing action in their community,” said Raymond P. Towle, IOM, CAE, U.S. Chamber Executive Director of Political Affairs and Federation Relations. “We applaud these organizations for advancing the principles of free enterprise.” Accreditation is the only national program that recognizes chambers for their effective organizational procedures and community involvement. In order to receive

Accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs, and technology. This extensive review and audit can take 6-9 months to complete. 5-Star Accreditation is awarded to those chambers that have gone above and beyond the minimum standards. “Being recognized as one of the top chambers in the nation is a significant honor. We are extremely proud to be the only 5-Star chamber in the Greater Houston region. Meeting the highest standards in the industry shows that we have established the necessary processes and measures to bring value to our membership,” said Keri Schmidt, President and CEO of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. “This achievement would not be possible without the support of our members and the leaders in our community, as well as Keri Schmidt President & CEO the fantastic culture and team we have established within the Chamber office. The 5-Star designation illuminates Fort Bend County as a place with a thriving economy and community, a place that the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce is proud to represent and be a part of.” Local chambers are rated Accredited,

3-Stars, 4-Stars, or 5-Stars. State chambers are recognized as either Accredited State Chamber or Accredited State Chamber with Distinction. The final determination is made by the Accrediting Board, a committee of U.S. Chamber board members. “I have been a member of many good chambers through the years but never have I experienced the level of commitment evident within the Fort Bend Chamber,” said Glenn Smith, Chairman of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, “ Becoming a 5-Star Accredited Chamber says it all! It demonstrates the commitment of the Board, the staff, and the members themselves. I’m grateful to be one of the many Chamber members who make this an extraordinary organization, and I share this honor with them.” The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce is the largest single county chamber in the Houston region. More than 1200 companies and organization, small to large, know that “Success is Just Around the Bend” at the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. Membership provides measurable benefits, along with access and influence in a dynamic business climate. As the voice and advocate for business excellence, the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce is a catalyst for economic prosperity, tourism and community involvement.
When your home was built, did the contractor lay the foundation based on a plan or a guess?
W
hy should the foundation for your retirement plan be laid any differently? At the start of the New Year, everyone wants to predict what the market will do for the year. Keep in mind that anyone’s prediction is really just their best guess. Is that the type of foundation that you’d like to lay for your retirement home? Planning is the key to long-term success in any field. It’s no different in the retirement planning field – the most solid plans (or homes) are built on solid foundations rather than guesses. When you invest in a prediction, you are taking a risk on someone’s best guess. Based off the historical data of highs and lows in the market, long-term projection for sustainability is risky business. Wouldn’t you prefer to have an advisor who will help you create a realistic income plan to last as long as your retirement does? Predictions look at numbers and research (at least we hope that they do!). At Roberts Wealth Management, you are more than just a number. You are a person who has worked hard and deserves the best. For us, planning consists of finding out who you are, what you want and need, and then finding tools to make sure you that you reach your goal. Your goal may be to travel, spend more time with family, volunteer, start a new business, or simply have more leisure time. Having a solid foundation for retirement income helps you to reach any of these goals.
As my father (and, the founder of our company), Paul Roberts, would say, “at Roberts Wealth Management, we’re into planning, not predictions.” Our 3-Step Review (Taxes, Income, and Risk) helps us lay the foundation to fiercely protect your retirement income so you can live the life that you want. Our interest lies in learning about you and your family, educating you about your current situation, and presenting a plan that will help you reach your goals. The bottom line is that we enjoy planning with our April R. Roberts, J.D. clients so that they can leave our office with a confident smile because they know that they have a solid foundation for their retirement home. We understand that finding the right advisor for you isn’t easy. Give us a call or send us an email to request the 5 Important Questions to Ask any Financial Advisor to aid in your search. And, do yourself and your family a favor by coming in for a second opinion on your retirement plan. We’re happy to answer the five questions for you!
At Roberts Wealth Management, we realize that you have worked hard for your money. We will work just as hard to help you protect and grow it. New ownership at Missouri City Storage welcomes U-Haul
E
verything is bigger in Texas, and Missouri City Storage is one of the biggest storage facilities southwest of Houston with 510 units. It’s fitting then that Missouri City Storage has partnered with the biggest name in moving – U-Haul – to offer truck, trailer and cargo van rental, as well as moving supplies. Conveniently located at 2427 Texas Parkway, Missouri City Storage is surrounded by residential neighborhoods and easy to access. Hours are 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-noon Sunday. Reserve U-Haul items here by visiting http://www.uhaul.com/Locations/TruckRentals-near-Missouri-City-TX or calling (281) 969-1164 today. Julie Farrar and Heath Edwards are the new owners of Missouri City Storage and were quick to listen to store/area manager Justin Pieper when he explained how beneficial an affiliation with U-Haul had been for the previous owners.
Pieper said that his U-Haul trucks and vans has been rented frequently and the store has enjoyed significantly more foot traffic since becoming a U-Haul neighborhood dealer – something that is particularly beneficial during the winter when there is a slump in storage rentals. Since the only other U-Haul neighborhood dealer in Missouri City is on the other side of town, there is a chance for Missouri City Storage to attract a loyal customer base for its moving needs. Missouri City Storage strives to be active in its community. Its staff recently helped the Houston Inferno, a semiprofessional woman’s basketball team, with a charity car wash. Missouri City Storage also is a great place to become U-Haul Famous. Take your picture in front of a U-Haul product, send it in and your face could land on the side of a U-Haul truck. Business Mentors lead Fort Bend ISD male students through Rites of Passage
P
reparing male students for life beyond high school was the focus of this year’s Young Men’s Leadership Conference, held December 5 at Minute Maid. Sponsored by Junior Achievement, in conjunction with Fort Bend ISD and Minute Maid, the annual event provided more than 60 male students with a “rites of passage” experience that not only encouraged them to strive for success, but taught them basic life lessons that will help them transition to adulthood. Among the community and business leaders to address the students on life issues were: Dr. Charles Dupre, FBISD Superintendent of Schools; Larry Washington and Ouyon Bernard of Junior Achievement, Bruce Flowers of Phillips 66, Jay Barnett of the Me-We Project, and Moriah Chatman of 76. Dr. Dupre shared his background and spoke of the challenges he faced growing up in an orphanage as a child. “I mention this to let you know where I came from and where I am today,” said Dr. Dupre. “I learned early on that education is important to be successful in life. No matter what your circumstances are, you can overcome them and be successful.”

Dr. Dupre also encouraged the students to listen to the advice of their parents, teachers, preachers and other adult mentors who have their best interest at heart. “I promise you that in the end, it’s worth it.” Former NFL player and founder of the Me-We Project Jay Barnett delivered a high-energy presentation that provoked laughter and self-reflection among students. In comparing life to boxing, Barnett said, “If you don’t practice and train for life, life will train you.” He spoke of how people can become distracted by negative influences, but reminded the students to be kings of their actions, language and ambitions. As a parting gift to all seniors attending the conference, Barnett presented them with autographed copies of his book, Finding Our Lost Kings and Queens. In addition to taking part in various February 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
presentations, the students also took part in a working lunch where they met one-onone with a mentor to discuss challenges they are facing in school and in moving forward beyond high school. When asked his thoughts about the conference, Bush High School student Rodolfo Garcia commented, “This was the best event. I am motivated to stay focused in school and become a good, young man.” Garcia also appreciated hearing the speakers’ advice on how to become successful in all areas of life. “Students from Bush High School and Marshall High School did an excellent job of representing what Fort Bend ISD is all about,” said Patrick Schultz, Assistant Principal at Bush High School. “The young men are leaders on their campuses and serve as role models to their peers.”

iverstone has again been ranked No. 4 on two lists of the nation’s top-selling master-planned communities. The lists, compiled by independent research firms John Burns Real Estate Consulting and Robert Charles Lesser & Co. (RCLCO), has the Fort Bend community as the highest-ranked Texas development, with 719 homes sold last year. Riverstone was ranked No. 6 when the lists were released at this time last year and then moved up to No. 4 mid-year in a report by RCLCO. “Many new neighborhoods were opened last year and buyers looking for the perfect location to call home with high-end amenities continued to choose Riverstone,” said Trey Reichert, vice president and general manager of Riverstone. “In addition, opening The Club at Riverstone last year was a draw for buyers.” There were eight Texas communities earning a place on the national lists of top 20 developments. Three of those eight are projects of The Johnson Development Corp., the developer of Riverstone. “2015 already is shaping up to be another successful year,” Reichert said. “Builders have already opened new model homes and new neighborhoods are selling quick.” Nineteen builders offer designs in Riverstone, with prices from the $300,000s to the millions. For more information on the Fort Bend development, visit www. riverstone.com.
With the number of new-home sales exceeding 700, Riverstone continues to be ranked No. 4 on national lists of top-selling master-planned communities. Retired NFL Star hosts 5k to Celebrate Life of Twin Brother & Raise Sickle Cell Awareness Fifth Annual Darling Dash to take place Feb. 22
A
s One Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by retired NFL star and Austin High graduate Devard Darling in memory of the sickle cell-related death of his identical twin brother, Devaughn, will host its 5th Annual Darling Dash 5k on Feb. 23 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. “It’s not every day you meet a young man like Devaughn, he was more than just a beast on the field. He was a friend to everyone he met and I miss him,” said Devard Darling, founder, As One Foundation. “There’s not one day that I don’t think about my brother, I look forward to bringing the same amount of joy and energy to the 5k as Devaughn brought into my life.” The 2015 Darling Dash marks the 14th anniversary of when Devaughn Darling lost his life at 18 due to exhaustion during football

practice at Florida State University. The Darling brothers carry the sickle cell trait, which can be fatal when paired with physical rigor and lack of hydration. The 5k aims to raise awareness about the sickle cell trait and fund As One Foundation’s Operation Hydration program to prevent sports related deaths by encouraging hydration, especially in sickle cell trait carriers. Operation Hydration provides an annual training program to educate student athletes, high school coaches and related staff. Proceeds will also go to the foundation’s scholarship program. “I know how terrible it feels to lose someone you love and it pains me that my brother’s death could’ve easily been prevented if we were more informed about sickle cell,” Darling said. “My goal is that the As One Foundation will prevent tragedies like this from happening through awareness and support.” Early bird registration is open for the run until Feb. 15 at $25 (12 and under) and $35 (13 and up). Late registration is open through the race day at $30 and $40. The first 1000 finishers will receive medals. The event is intended to raise $10,000 and be an even bigger success than last year’s 5k, which raised over

$22,000 and had 402 participants. According to the American Football Coaches Association, sickle cell related deaths are a leader in taking collegiate football players’ lives on the field in recent history. While the CDC estimates that 90,000 to 100,000 Americans are affected by sickle cell, deaths related to this disease are completely preventable. The mission of As One Foundation is to educate and increase awareness of sickle cell trait while encouraging youth to achieve their dreams in the face of life’s challenges. On Feb. 26, 2001, Devaughn Darling lost his life due to sickle cell disease coupled with exhaustion during spring football practice at Florida State University. His identical twin brother, Devard Darling, persevered after the tragedy. He became an NFL star, but his most noteworthy accomplishment was founding As One Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to honoring Devaughn’s life while elevating awareness of sickle cell trait. UTHealth Provides Relief for Nursing Demand
COVER STORY By Subhrata Barot
A
s chronic illness, aging Baby Boomers and healthcare facilities continue to grow, the need for healthcare practitioners is at an all-time high. Although there is a shortage now of nurses across Texas and the nation, the demand is expected to increase 86 percent by 2020. But, standing out from the crowd is easier said than done in the world of nursing. To profit from the demand, nurses require three key qualities that are imperative to their success – additional education, reinvention and marketability. At the University of Texas Health Science Center of Houston (UTHealth) School of Nursing, three letters can make that possible – B.S.N. UTHealth School of

Nursing is looking to bridge the gap between qualified nursing professionals and the workforce. The School offers two undergraduate paths that lead to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree – Pacesetter BSN and RN to BSN. The Pacesetter BSN program is designed to prepare students to take the NCLEX – the state licensure exam. The RN-BSN program is designed for registered nurses looking to advance their education to the bachelor of science in nursing. Upon completion of the tracks, students are well equipped for the work force, can provide patient-centered nursing care, work in individual and team environments, implement evidencedbased practices, and ultimately be ready for management and leadership positions within the nursing profession. “We offer two different programs because students enter our nursing school with different skills sets and strengths,” said Cathy Rozmus, Ph.D., associate dean of Academic Affairs. “The RN to BSN students are trained nurses who are looking to grow within their field February 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
and generally the Pacesetter BSN is for qualified students who are looking to go back to school to enter the nursing industry.” The very popular and competitive Pacesetter BSN program is a full-time, 15-month track, which prepares students for entry into the nursing profession. A prospective student can start in the fall, spring or summer and no previous degree is required; however, the student must complete the course prerequisites at an accredited institution. The theorybased courses are taught in the first three semesters of the program and the last semester is strictly in a clinical setting. “The Pacesetter BSN program is our most competitive undergraduate program and also the most unique,” said TengYuan Yu, associate professor and assistant dean of Undergraduate Programs. “In fact we have 600 to 800 applicants for 125 slots. The program gives students an indepth look into the life of a nurse during the final semester and that is what is so appealing about the program.” Joe Getty, a 24-year-old former sky diving instructor and ski patroller is a recent alumnus of the Pacesetter program and agrees with Yu’s thoughts. “What I love about the Pacesetter BSN program is its ability to provide me with all of the knowledge I need before actually immersing myself in the nursing world,” Getty said. “During clinicals, I didn’t have to think about exams or anything else when I was on the floors of a hospital or with my preceptor. I was able to focus on my work and understand the life of a nurse in its entirety.” The tough economy is compelling workers to look for other options and be adaptable to the times. The Pacesetter BSN program allows students who possess other degrees or those with no previous nursing experience get a chance to reinvent themselves and start practicing a new profession.
The 12-month RN to BSN program is a little different for those looking to get a bachelor’s degree in nursing. This program is designed for registered nurses who have diplomas or associate’s degrees in nursing and are looking to go back to school. This program can make them more marketable in the workforce. Students can start the track either in the spring or summer, provided they meet the prerequisites. “Right now we have about 80 students enrolled in the program,” said Susan Krawtz, track director and instructor for the RN to BSN program. “But we are looking to expand both our web-enhanced and campus-based programs. Both of our options are for those who are committed to learning and want to succeed.” The unique feature of the RN to BSN program is the two options it offers for enrollment. The campus-based students attend class on Wednesday each week during each semester. The campus-based curriculum includes on-campus, webbased, and one 100% online course. The web-based option is a little more flexible but students are encouraged to remain Continues...

Being BSN-prepared will not only provide the students with the education and skills to excel in the workforce, it will also make the students more marketable and ready for management and leadership positions. — Krawtz disciplined, manage their time and turn in assignments when they are due. Most courses will be online, but occasionally, students will come to class for exams and presentations. Rozmus, Yu and Krawtz agree that a BSN degree is essential to more job opportunities and a solid foundation in the nursing field, irrespective of which track they choose. Hospitals look for prospective employees who can bring a variety of strengths to the job. “Being BSN-prepared will not only provide the students with the education and skills to excel in the workforce, it will also make the students more marketable and ready for management and leadership positions,” Krawtz said. “The BSN program opens more doors for them and brings additional opportunities to them in their career path.” Yu added that the program as a whole prepares students to be critical thinkers and valuable to their hospital, colleagues, and most importantly, patients. With well-rounded BSNprepared students, hospitals experience more positive outcomes, fewer mortality rates and medication errors. In turn, the quality of care for the hospital rises which makes it easier for hospitals to attain magnet-status. Magnet-status is an award given by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to hospitals that meet a set of criteria designed to measure the quality of the organization’s nursing. “Our program puts an emphasis on evidence-based patient care,” Rozmus said. “There isn’t one method of care that works for every patient. So, we teach students how to use external evidence and their own expertise to make a wellinformed decision about patient care. It is personalized care.” Despite the need for nurses and the job opportunities that lie ahead for them, getting into the UTHealth School of Nursing is highly competitive and the school admits students who exceed expectations.
24
“We have at first-time pass rate of 96 percent on the NCLEX,” Yu said. “Compared to other nursing schools, our passing rate is very high. We also prepare our students to enter the field and many join hospitals like Memorial Hermann Health System, Harris Health System, St. Lukes, and Houston Methodist. I’ve heard from hospitals that they like to hire our graduates because they know they’re well prepared to join the work force and are trained to accept leadership positions.” Getty also added that UTHealth School of Nursing has built his foundation not only for his career, but for his life as well. “I am more organized and my time management and prioritizing has improved ten fold,” Getty said. “This program has given me career and life skills.”
