Valentine’s and Ballots
Michael Sudhalter Editor
Welcome to February!
I
f you still have your New Year’s Resolution intact, congratulations to you, because most of us gave up on ours a couple of weeks after we sang Auld Lang Syne. With that behind us, we’re already thinking about cards, chocolates, flowers and date nights of Valentine’s Day. For those who are in love, there’s no better time than Feb. 14 to celebrate a relationship with a spouse or a significant other. For those who aren’t, it’s a chance to save several hundred dollars. Before the flowers are even removed from the table, it will be time to visit the ballot box. Early voting for the March 1 Primaries runs from Feb. 16-26, so it’s a good chance to cast your vote – eliminating the opportunity for last minute excuses. This month, we had the opportunity to visit with Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls. Nehls, a public servant who has served his community and country honorably in law enforcement and the U.S. Army, respectively, is running for re-election this year, beginning with the Republican Primary. We wish Sheriff Nehls and all of the primary candidates the best of luck in this year’s election. And the same well wishes go out to all of the lovebirds on Valentine’s Day! Sincerely, Scan with your smart phone to launch to our website.

When Your Home Was Built, Did the Contractor Lay the Foundation Based on a Plan or a Guess?
W
hy should the foundation for your retirement plan be laid any differently? At the start of the New Year, everyone wants to predict what the market will do for the year. Keep in mind that anyone’s prediction is really just their best guess. Is that the type of foundation that you’d like to lay for your retirement home? Planning is the key to long-term success in any field. It’s no different in the retirement planning field – the most solid plans (or homes) are built on solid foundations rather than guesses. When you invest in a prediction, you are taking a risk on someone’s best guess. Based off the historical data of highs and lows in the market, long-term projection for sustainability is risky business. Wouldn’t you prefer to have an advisor who will help you create a realistic income plan to last as long as your retirement does? Predictions look at numbers and research (at least we hope that they do!). At Roberts
Wealth Management, you are more than just a number. You are a person who has worked hard and deserves the best. For us, planning consists of finding out who you are, what you want and need, and then finding tools to make sure you that you reach your goal. Your goal may be to travel, spend more time with family, volunteer, start a new business, or simply have more leisure time. Having a solid foundation for retirement income helps you to reach any of these goals. As my father (and, the founder of our company), Paul Roberts, would say, “at Roberts Wealth Management, we’re into planning, not predictions.” Our 3-StepReview (Taxes, Income, and Risk) helps us lay the foundation to fiercely protect your retirement income so you can live the life that you want. Our interest lies in learning about you and your family, educating you about your current situation, and presenting a plan that will help you reach your goals. The bottom line is that we enjoy planning with our clients so that they can leave our office with a confident smile because they
know that they have a solid foundation for their retirement home. We understand that finding the right advisor for you isn’t easy. Give us a call or send us an email to request the 5 Important April R. Roberts, J.D. Questions to Ask any Financial Advisor to aid in your search. And, do yourself and your family a favor by coming in for a second opinion on your retirement plan. We’re happy to answer the five questions for you!
At Roberts Wealth Management, we realize that you have worked hard for your money. We will work just as hard to help you protect and grow it. Colony One Auto Center, 1131 Dulles Ave. in Stafford, will celebrate its 25th Anniversary in April. They expect to service their 250,000th car, and the lucky owner of that vehicle will receive free service on their vehicle. (Submitted photo)
Colony One Auto prepares for 25th Anniversary By Michael Sudhalter msudhalter@fortbendstar.com
O
ver the past quarter-century, there have been a lot of automotive trends that have come and gone. But there’s been one constant for the Colony One Auto Center, 1131 Dulles Ave. in Stafford, since it opened on April 15, 1991. “The customer is an individual — not just another car to service,” Colony One owner Rod Tate said. “We have faster service, and it’s tailor-made. Relationships matter, and you really have to treat people right.” The customers have reflected their satisfaction with positive reviews on Angie’s List (which named Colony One a “Super Service Provider”), the Better Business Bureau and AAA. Colony One is on pace to service its 250,000th automobile sometime this year, and
that lucky customer will get their service done for free. The Auto Center has serviced approximately 11,000-12,000 per year when Rod’s father, the late Sam Tate, opened the business. Sam owned a Texaco Station in the Alief area in the 1970s, so it’s not uncommon for third, and even fourth generation, customers to visit Colony One. Rod, a 46-year-old Missouri City resident, worked in sales and pest control until 1995, when his father welcomed him into the business. “I tried for years to work here, but my dad wanted me to work for other people first and get perspective,” Rod said. Rod became the owner in 1999 after Sam passed away. Many of the 19 employees and technicians have been on staff for more than a decade, including Rick Hanson, who’s been the General Manager since the beginning.
Two of Rod’s sons — Justin, 22, and Clay, 20, — work for Colony One, so there’s a third generation of Tates in the family business now. Justin is a Service Advisor, and Clay’s a Quick Service Technician. Over the past few years, Colony One has added conversions, lift kits and off-road vehicle work to its list of repairs, to meet customer demands. Rod said the auto repair position has changed due to the development of computers and software within them. “It used to be that mechanics did nuts and bolts, but now software and electronics are the biggest issues,” Rod said. Rod has been pro-active about providing the proper training and development for his technicians to stay up to date on the everchanging technology. “We’ve been doing something right,” Rod said. “I hope we can have another 25 years. Our biggest strength is people. People trust us, and we’ve proven ourselves.”

hether you own a business interest as a proprietor, partner, or shareholder, consideration should be given to your individual estate plan. An estate plan offers more than just tax planning as, upon your death or incapacity, business issues can arise related to: Casson Wen • Succession or redemption of business interests; • Access to bank accounts; • Authority to write checks; • Management of payroll; • Execution of contracts on behalf of the business. However, you can mitigate the effect of some future issues by taking steps now including: • Creating an estate plan that includes your business interests; • Executing a power of attorney that includes the powers necessary
for your agent to continue to operate the entity in the event of your incapacity; • Updating your business documents to include succession or redemption provisions; • Executing a buy-sell agreement; • Adding signatories to your accounts; • Telling others where to locate your estate planning documents. It can take years to build a business, but only a few months to ruin it. The Heart Truth — Free Heart Health Screenings at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital
T
hink of your heart as your body’s delivery system. It pumps out the good stuff—oxygenated and nutrient-rich blood—to every inch of your body through a network of arteries. But heart disease throws a wrench into things. “The most common form, coronary heart disease, is the number one cause of death for both men and women in most countries,” said Dr. Toussaint Smith, board-certified cardiologist with Houston Methodist Cardiology Associates. Coronary artery disease starts with artery damage caused by smoking, high blood pressure or a number of other factors. The damage triggers the buildup of plaque, which narrows the arteries and limits blood flow to the heart. If the heart cannot get the oxygen and nutrients it needs, it struggles to function properly. Worse yet, plaque can break loose and form a clot, causing a heart attack when blood supply is cut off. The best way to beat coronary artery disease? Never get it in the first place. You can do that by managing risk factors: reduce high blood pressure or cholesterol levels, quit smoking, lose weight if overweight or obese, and lead an active lifestyle. “The combination of living healthier, knowing your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers and taking medication if you need to
8
is the formula for prevention,” Smith said. Heart Basics. The pulmonary artery carries blood out to the lungs, where it is oxygenated. The pulmonary veins transport the oxygen-rich blood back to the heart. The aorta then distributes this oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Once depleted of oxygen, blood returns to the heart and the process restarts. Aortic stenosis. When it comes to the arteries, the aorta is the main work horse. This main artery is responsible for carrying most of the blood to the body. In a condition called aortic stenosis, calcium deposits can build up in the aortic valve, causing it to narrow and limit blood flow. Atrial fibrillation. With atrial fibrillation, the heart’s upper chambers beat erratically, causing an irregular pulse. When left untreated, it can double the risk of a heart-related death and dramatically increase the chance of having a stroke. Heart failure. In some cases, the heart struggles to pump enough blood to the body. Heart failure is measured by ejection fraction (EF), the percentage of blood pushed out with each heartbeat. An EF less than 40 may indicate heart failure. Cardiomyopathy. This disease causes the heart muscle to become enlarged or stiff. Both blood flow and maintaining a regular heartbeat become difficult tasks. The condition can be inherited, or it can surface because of another medical condition, such as high blood pressure.

Golden scissors... Missouri City resident has styled hair for 50 years By Michael Sudhalter msudhalter@fortbendstar.com
W
hen Kathy Coburn went to the tattoo parlor for her first ink, there was no doubt over her choice. The Missouri City resident asked for a pair of scissors on her ankle, to symbolize 50 years of cutting and styling hair. “I’ll always have a pair of scissors in my hand as long as I have eyes to see, hands that are steady and feet that I can stand on — I praise God for that,” Coburn said. Coburn has lived in Missouri City since the late 1970s, but her story began in the small Northeast Texas town of Bailey, population 288. At age 4, Coburn enjoyed cutting the hair on the dolls that her parents bought her. The town didn’t have a hair salon, so when Coburn turned 14, she would visit the women throughout Bailey and do their hair. She attended high school in nearby Bonham, while she simultaneously completed beauty school. “I love to cut long hair, short hair, anything,” Coburn said. “I just love to be creative and artistic. All of us are given a gift. I’d like to be remembered as a faithful servant doing a good service for people.” Coburn once owned Quail Valley Coiffures — a large salon in Missouri City with 17 employees. She’s now an independent hairdresser who works at Tuscany Village Salons (4807 Hwy. 6 in Missouri City), but her schedule is busy as ever. Coburn works four days per week, nonstop from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. and serves an average of 22 customers per day — both women and men. They range in age from toddlers to 94, and some travel from as far away as Cuero — 138 miles to the south. She’s styled the hair of generations of families.

“My clients and I have been through thick and thicker together — I’ve gone to weddings and funerals with them,” said Coburn, comparing the friendships to those of the classic film, “Steel Magnolias,” which centered around a Northern Louisiana hair salon. Coburn’s three well-deserved days off allow her to spend time with family, including visits to Northeast Texas to see her 89-year-old father whom she credits with instilling her work ethic. “Retirement for me looks like working three 10-hour days,” Coburn said. “How many people get to do what they love, be with people they love, make money at the same time and enjoy every minute of it?” Towards the beginning of Coburn’s career,
February 2016 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
she worked during the era of “Big Hair” in Texas. “They used to have a saying in Texas — ‘the higher the hair, the closer to heaven’,” Coburn said. Coburn is respected throughout the Lone Star State for her expertise as a hairstylist. She served on a state-wide committee that’s responsible for certifying hairstylists, and she’s taught Cosmetology courses at Wharton County Junior College. In 1992, she did all of the hair for the NBC News staff at the Republican National Convention at the Houston Astrodome. Coburn and her husband have been married for 45 years. They have two children and six grandchildren.

City of Sugar Land’s Steve Griffith named Treasurer of SOTX’s Board of Directors
C
ity of Sugar Land’s 1st Assistant City Manager Steve Griffith (Sugar Land) has been re-elected an officer on Special Olympics Texas’ (SOTX) Board of Directors. He will serve a two-year term in an at-large position as the Board’s Treasurer. Prior to his most recent appointment to this position, Griffith served the Board as a Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) representative. Griffith has been actively involved with Special Olympics Texas for more than 24 years. He is the former Greater Houston Area (Area 4) chairman, a position he served in for six years. During four of those years, revenue for Area 4 surpassed $100,000. Griffith served SOTX’s Law Enforcement Torch Run director for the state for two years. During his tenure as state director, he worked to integrate the state prison system into the Torch Run and generated $2 million annually for the Texas Torch Runners. The Texas Torch Run received national awards for revenue growth and totals. Griffith served on the SOTX Board of Directors for 10 years, including serving as the Chairman of the Board for two years. A Houston-area native and a 35-year law enforcement veteran, Griffith was named the City of Sugar Land’s Chief of Police in August 2005 and was promoted to 1st Assistant City Manager in 2014. He oversees Police, Fire, Public Safety Dispatch, Municipal Courts, the Airport and Communications. Griffith is actively involved in the Sugar Land community. He serves on the Board of the Fort Bend Council on Substance Abuse where he served as treasurer from 2010-2011. He is a member of the Sugar Land Exchange Club and served as president from 2011-2012. Prior to his employment with the City of Sugar Land, Griffith served as executive director of the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) Center for two years at Texas State University in San Marcos. His leadership was instrumental in the design and creation
of a partnership between the University, the San Marcos Police Department and the Hays County Sheriff’s office to address the need for active-shooter response training for first-responders. The ALERRT Center has since trained more than 80,000 police officers nationwide in dynamic, force-onforce scenario-based training. Griffith was police chief for the City of San Marcos from 1998 to 2003; the City of West University from 1987 to 1998 and spent eight years with the Bellaire Police Department, where he served in the positions of captain, lieutenant, patrol sergeant and senior patrol officer. Early in his career, Griffith also served with the University of Houston Central Campus Police. From 1976 until 1979, he was employed by the University of Houston as a patrol officer. Griffith earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Houston and a master’s degree in criminal justice management from Sam Houston State University. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the public executive institute at The University of Texas Lyndon Baines Johnson School of Public Affairs. Griffith holds a master peace officer and instructor certificate and served as an adjunct criminal justice instructor at Texas State University. The new venue will include a lakeside amphitheater for concerts and performances, a lush event lawn, park and playground. The Promenade also will offer a wellness room and multipurpose room for events planned by Harvest Green’s full-time Lifestyle Director. Slated to open in fall 2016, the build out of the facility begins with the construction of new homes in full swing. Eleven model homes in Harvest Green, each fully furnished and professionally decorated, also are open daily. “With about 100 new homes under construction at the end of 2015, we’re very pleased with the response to Harvest Green,” says Shay Shafie, general manager of the 1,300-acre community by The Johnson Development Corp. “The start of The Promenade is another very positive sign for the community.” The Promenade will be located within walking or biking distance from every section in Harvest Green, Shafie adds. Harvest Green also has broken ground on the community’s Village Farm where residents can lease 20’ x 20’ plots to grow their own vegetables.

Rosenberg Railroad Museum named a finalist in Bernzomatic’s “Find your Firetm” community grants program
Community votes needed to help local organization win $10,000 in grant support
B
ernzomatic®, the industry leader in handheld torches since 1876, announced today that the Rosenberg Railroad Museum has been named one of ten finalists in the brand’s “Find Your Fire Community Grants” program, an initiative that will award more than $40,000 in grant funding to motivated people and organizations seeking to bring community revitalization projects to life. The project was nominated by resident and museum employee Ratha Liladrie. With the help of votes from the local community, the city’s Rosenberg Railroad Museum will help bring the museum’s beloved 1973 Missouri Pacific Caboose back to life as an active attraction and used to educate visitors and locals alike on the rich railroad history of Ft. Bend County. Alongside TV home rehab expert Nicole Curtis, the program encouraged people across the country to nominate projects that will make a difference in communities, and involve a blowtorch in some way. Ten finalists were selected, and now America is invited to vote for their favorite project online. The three finalists that attract the most votes will be awarded a $10,000 grant and the Bernzomatic tools needed to complete the project; the seven remaining finalists will each receive a $1,500 grant and Bernzomatic products. The finalist with the most votes will also be awarded a special

visit from Curtis, who will help with the project. The submission, titled “Save Our Caboose,” caught the eye of the voting committee by capturing the spirit of the “Find Your Fire” Community Grants program – igniting people’s passion and creativity to work on projects that benefit communities across the country. The Caboose has been host to more than 60,000 visitors throughout the past eight years, proudly showcasing the history of the community and its significant role in shaping the United States railways. If named a top winner, the $10,000 grant will be used to rehabilitate the Caboose roof, walls, chassis, metal railings and more, making it a safe environment for thousands more future visitors. “We were thrilled with the caliber of submissions that we received, and humbled by the inspiring stories of community members looking to make their cities and neighborhoods a better place to live,” said Jennifer Fening, Bernzomatic spokesperson. “We’re honored that these folks have invited us into their lives and look forward to making an impact in the Rosenberg community through the grants program.” Those wanting to support the “Save Our Caboose” project, or other grant finalists, are encouraged to vote by visiting Bernzomatic.com/Grants January 11 through January 31. Winners will be announced online the week of February 22. Bernzomatic, a Worthington Industries brand, has been the leader in the blowtorch category since 1876. With a passion for craftsmanship and creation, Bernzomatic believes in providing the right tools and inspiration to take on projects and redefine what you can achieve. Bernzomatic products set the standard in safety, durability and performance, and include handheld torches, fuel cylinders, butane lighters and project accessories that can be used on the job site, in the home and in the hands of those with a desire to create. Sienna HOAs win Community of the Year Award Sienna Plantation Associations took home three awards in the Community Associations Institute Greater Houston Chapter’s inaugural awards gala, including Community of the Year. The Community of the Year award is given to the community association that exhibits excellence in management, governance, finance and lifestyle. The Sienna associations won in the 3,000-plus units category. The associations also received an Innovations in Communication award for their combination of print and digital efforts to keep residents fully informed of community news. Sienna’s third honor, the Community Spirit Award, was given for the development’s annual Fall Family Camp Out, a collaborative effort of home owner associations’ staff, community patrol officers, resident volunteers and community business sponsors. Hundreds attend the sell-out event each year, enjoying traditional cookout fare, a tent-decorating contest, tent trick-or-treating, pumpkin carv-
ing and other camping activities. “We were thrilled to take home these three prestigious awards given by the industry’s leading organizations,” said Sandy Denton, general manager of the Sienna Plantation Associations. “Our dedicated team and continued support from our board members have catapulted us on the road to success, and while we may have received the trophies, it’s really Sienna residents who are the true winners.” The Community Associations Institute (CAI) is the only national organization dedicated to fostering vibrant, responsive and competent community associations. In Houston, the CAI is a resource for education and information regarding best practices and professionalism for homeowners associations. The group handed out 11 trophies during its recent award gala, as well as recognized a number of CAI members. A project of The Johnson Development Corp., Sienna Plantation is home to nearly

Johnson Development names latest Community A chance historical photograph solidified the naming of the newest project of The Johnson Development Corp., Veranda. General manager Trey Reichert and his team had been contemplating the name Veranda for the 590-acre Richmond property near the northwest corner of Williams Way Boulevard and U.S. 59 before happening upon the photo. “We want this community to reflect the rich heritage of Richmond, both visually and figuratively,” Reichert said. “Builders will be encouraged to incorporate timeless elements such as expansive porches — verandas — into their home designs. This was the seed that led to our considering the name Veranda for the development.” Before air conditioning, homes often featured large porches in the front and back, where doors could be opened, allowing air to better circulate through the home. Development team members visited the Fort Bend Museum for inspiration regarding the vision for the community and while there, saw several photos of structures with broad porches
dating back to the early 1800s. During their research, they found an old photograph that truly caught them by surprise. They learned that Jane Long, considered the “Mother of Texas,” opened a boarding house in Richmond in 1837 that became a dwelling place for local leadership. This boarding house, called “The Veranda Hotel,” was located at the corner of Morton and Fourth streets in downtown Richmond, which is currently home to Sandy McGee’s restaurant. “Seeing that photograph sealed our decision to name the development Veranda,” Reichert said. The Johnson Development Corp. announced the acquisition of the property, which will offer up to 2,500 homes, in late 2015. Johnson Development, along with IHP Capital Partners, acquired the property from the Henderson-Wessendorff Foundation of Richmond. Foundation president and CEO Pat McDonald said Johnson Development was selected because of the company’s commitment to creating a first-class, sustainable development that respects the area’s rich history and the legacy of the Henderson and

Wessendorff families. “They are trusting us to protect and enhance a legacy founded more than 100 years ago,” said Larry Johnson, president and chief executive officer of Johnson Development. Development activity in Veranda is expected to begin mid-year, with home construction estimated for early 2017. Veranda is Johnson Development’s seventh Fort Bend community, joining Cross Creek Ranch, Harvest Green, Imperial, the new Jordan Ranch, Sienna Plantation and Riverstone, recently named the top-selling master-planned community in Texas. Reichert is also vice president and general manager of Riverstone. Other current Houston projects of The Johnson Development Corp. include Edgewater, Fall Creek, Grand Central Park, Harmony, Tuscan Lakes, Willow Creek Farms and Woodforest. Johnson Development also is overseeing the Viridian community in Dallas-Fort Worth. For more information, visit www.johnsondevelopment.com.

Santikos Palladium supports Hope For Three Santikos Theatres is a movie theater chain based in San Antonio, Texas, USA. The company was started by Louis Santikos, a Greek entrepreneur, who moved to Texas and immediately opened nickelodeons in the city in the early 1900s. His son John Santikos eventually took over the company and continued to create various movie theaters, including indoor multi-screen theaters and local drive-ins. Construction of a 22 screen theater and 16 lane bowling alley began in August 2011 at the intersection of Highway 99 (Grand PKWY) and West Bellfort in Richmond, TX. The Grand Opening was on May 16, 2013. Palladium has expanded to seven local theaters in the greater Houston area. In 2014, ownership of the chain was passed to the San Antonio Area Foundation upon John Santikos’ death and the company is carrying on the legacy of supporting nonprofits. Hope For Three is filled with gratitude and humbled to have received a $5,000 check that will go towards the end of year giving campaign. The check was presented to Matt Jackson, Executive Director at Hope For Three by Staci Smith, Director of Marketing and Events at Santikos Palladium in Richmond. Hope For Three addresses the urgent need to provide support, including financial
assistance to children with an autism disorder. Our primary purpose is to bridge the gap between families and providers so children have access to high-quality treatment at the earliest stage of life possible. The annual cost of care for a child with autism is around $60,000. We all know the financial stress that this can bring on any family especially during the holidays and with the support of partners like Santikos Palladium we can make a difference in our families’ lives.

Texana receives donation from H-E-B tournament of champions H-E-B’s Tournament of Champions Charitable Trust has contributed to worthy causes throughout Texas for over 30 years. The funds are raised through an annual golf tournament sponsored by H-EB’s vendor community. The purpose of the event is to have a positive impact on youth, children, education and health within their communities. Kate Johnson-Patagoc, Director of Texana’s Specialized Services says “We are very pleased to be chosen as a recipient for the H-E-B Tournament of Champions. These funds will be used towards replacing an old, rusty, outdated playground for the children in our autism program. For most children, the playground is the first place where they engage with other children and with the world at large. Play is important for developing language, problem solving and creative skills in children, in addition to the social skills that are the foundation for all relationships. Play often does not come naturally to children with autism, so they have to be specifically taught these very important play skills. Our existing playground is not acceptable and we need to replace it and this donation will help us towards that goal, so we are very grateful for this gift.”

Sugar Land-Based CFO Dale Hosack Elected to SOTX Board of Directors
SL-based CFO Hosack elected to Special Olympics TX board Sugar Land’s Western Container Corporation CFO, Dale Hosack, will serve a two-year term in an At-Large position for the Special Olympics Texas Board of Directors.
Western Container Corporation Chief Financial Officer Dale Hosack has been elected to Special Olympics Texas’ (SOTX) Board of Directors, a year after being appointed to the non-profit organization’s President’s Advisory Council. He will serve a two-year term in an at-large position. “I am honored to become a member of Special Olympics Texas’ Board of Directors and look forward to helping to promote the thousands of athletes who participate in Special Olympics Texas events each year,” Hosack said. Hosack, who holds a degree in Accounting from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, has spent his entire career working in manufacturing and driving lean accounting organizations. He is only the second CFO Western Container Corporation of Sugar Land has had in the company’s 35-year history. Western Container is the second-largest producer of plastic bottles for the Coca-Cola Bottling System in the world. Hosack and his wife of 30 years enjoy going to sporting events, music concerts and traveling the world. Recently, his daughter and her husband welcomed a daughter in February 2015.

2015-2016 Souper Bowl of Caring National Youth Advisory Board Sophia George of Missouri City, TX has been named to the 2015-2016 Souper Bowl of Caring National Youth Advisory Board. George is one of 13 students from eight states chosen to serve as a member of this prestigious board. In July and November, George attended the organization’s national youth training conferences in Houston. George will spend January being an advocate for the organization and jumpstarting movements in the greater Houston community. Souper Bowl of Caring’s National Youth Advisory Board is an exclusive program comprised of 13 student leaders from around the
country selected through a competitive national application process. The National Youth Advisory Board gives young volunteers an opportunity to take a larger leadership role in the organization, which encourages Sophia George youth to collect donations through schools, places of worship and businesses and donate 100 percent of their collection to a local charity of their choice.
HCC Business programs awarded accreditation Five programs at the Houston Community College (HCC) Business Center of Excellence have been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) Associate Degree Board of Commissioners. The programs are Accounting, Business Administration, Business Technology, International Business, and Marketing. HCC is one of only three community colleges in Texas and the only community college in the Gulf Coast Region to have this accreditation. Established in 1988, ACBSP is the only organization offering specialized business accreditation for all degree levels, from associate to baccalaureate to doctoral degree programs. ACBSP accreditation certifies that the teaching and learning processes within the business programs offered at HCC meet the rigorous educational standards established by ACBSP. “Houston Community College has shown commitment to teaching excellence and to the process of quality improvement by participating in the accreditation process,” said ACBSP Chief Accreditation Officer Dr. Steve Parscale, who will present the Certificate of Initial Accreditation at ACBSP Conference 2016 in Atlanta, Ga., on June 19. “This accreditation is evidence that Houston Community College is committed to provid-

ing the highest quality business education for their students.” Based on the criteria of the National Malcolm Baldridge Quality Award, ACBSP accreditation evaluates aspects of the institutional leadership, strategic planning processes, relationships with the community, quality of academic programs, faculty credentials and services, and educational support to determine whether or not the institution offers a rigorous educational experience and demonstrates continuous quality improvement. “Achieving this prestigious accreditation is a reflection of our amazing business faculty as well as the exemplary teaching and learning that occurs every day at the HCC Business Center of Excellence,” said Dr. Jesus Roberto Rodriguez, dean, HCC Business Center of Excellence. To learn more about the certificate and degree programs offered at the Business Center of Excellence, visit hccs.edu/coe.
“Souper Bowl of Caring can be personalized to take on whatever meaning you want it to in your life,” George said. “For me, it has been the empowering conferences with my fellow national youth board members that have opened my eyes to the immense need around me and my role to alleviate that need.” In addition to coordinating Souper Bowl of Caring drives, members are expected to serve as a youth spokesperson for the organization with local and national media, connect with other youth leaders interested in making a difference, grow the organization’s effort in their community and offer feedback and guidance to the Souper Bowl of Caring staff. George is the daughter of Reji and Leena George of Missouri City, TX. She attends Ridge Point High School and became involved with Souper Bowl of Caring through her experience serving on the organization’s Houston Local Youth Advisory Board. She learned of this opportunity through volunteering with the Houston Food Bank. Other states represented on the Board include Arizona, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina and South Carolina. Souper Bowl of Caring started with one church youth group in South Carolina in 1990 when minister Brad Smith prayed, “Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without even a bowl of soup to eat.” From that prayer, Souper Bowl of Caring was born and more than $110 million has been raised nationwide. In 2015, 6,600 organizations collected over $8 million nationwide and every penny went to local organizations that help people in need.
