PROUDLY SUPPORTS WOMEN IN NEED In their ongoing commitment to community support, Texas Direct Auto is a proud sponsor of the 10th annual Girlfriends Giggle, benefitting the Fort Bend County Women’s Center. This year’s event, described as the ultimate “Grown-Up Girls’ Pajama Party,” will be held on Thursday, February 5th from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Stafford Centre on 10505 Cash Road in Stafford, Texas. Billed as the “good-cause event of the year,” Girlfriends Giggle is a celebration of female friendship in support of local women in need. Attendees can enjoy fine local restaurant fare and a martini bar, participate in live and silent auctions, boutique shopping, and dance lessons, compete in a pajama contest, and indulge in spa luxuries like manicures, massages, and hair-styling – all in the name of helping survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault achieve safety and self-sufficiency. Regarding Texas Direct Auto’s partnership with the event for a 3rd consecutive year, Jessica DeMarr, Director of Business Development, says, “The Fort Bend County Women’s Center provides such a vital and important service to our community. Assisting survivors of domestic violence and providing them with the resources to start a new life is a mission we are proud to support.” Tickets for Girlfriends Giggle start at $67 – the same amount needed to shelter a survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault for a day at the Fort Bend County Women’s Center’s 65-bed emergency center. In nearly 35 years of serving the community, the non-profit agency has helped more than 40,000 local women
and children achieve violence-free lifestyles, but they could never have done it without the generous contributions and support from the local Fort Bend community – caring people just like you! Last year’s event sold out with 1,000 “Gigglers” in attendance, and raised a record-breaking $141,370 for the Women’s Center. This year the goals are even higher, and Texas Direct Auto urges all the lovely ladies of Fort Bend to grab your feather boas and your favorite girlfriends and head out to the Stafford Centre on February 5th for a fabulous evening of female fun in support of a very worthy cause. Tickets to Girlfriends Giggle can be purchased online at fortbendwomenscenter.org or at the Fort Bend County Women’s Center office, located at 905 3rd Street in Rosenberg. For information on becoming a sponsor or vendor at the event, please contact Anne Budill at (281)344-5756 or abudill@fortbendwomenscenter.org.

But Resolutions aside, it’s great to be at the forefront of an exciting year – 2015. The Star newspaper will be beginning a monthly health section, “Trending Healthy,” where we will focus on various health and wellness themes throughout the year. January also represents a new beginning for most students – the second semester. It’s an opportunity for students to rededicate themselves to learning new skills and information that will benefit them in the long run. Fort Bend County is fortunate to have University of Houston System in Sugar Land and Katy. Virtually every person in the county
is within a 20-minute drive of either UH Sugar Land or the UH System at Cinco Ranch. The University of HoustonVictoria offers degree programs in Arts & Sciences, Education & Human Development, Business and Nursing at both sites and the Houston Community College Katy campus. This allows UHV students to have the option of taking classes in Sugar Land or Cinco Ranch, the main campus in Victoria, or online. n uptempo pace and a red, white and blue basketball evoke memories of the original American Basketball Association (ABA), which saw legends such as Julius Erving and George Gervin star between 1967 and 1976. The original ABA ended 38 years ago when some of its teams merged into the NBA, but a re-organized ABA has 90 franchises, including the undefeated Sugar Land Legends. The Legends are the brainchild of CEO Katrina Chambers, a Sugar Land resident who works as a marketing executive and represents 1995 Heisman Trophy winner/ former Houston Oilers running back Eddie George and organizations such as “NFL Moms” “It was on my wish list to start a professional team,” Chambers said. Chambers started the franchise, along with Arnetta Yardbourgh, a Life Coach and fellow Sugar Land resident, and Tamara Johnson-George, a member of the 1990s R&B group, SWV. The Legends are the only team in the league with an all-female ownership group. One of the team’s sponsors is Shaquille O’Neal’s “Dunkman.” The owners grew up in San Antonio where they were childhood friends with the four-time NBA champion, and Yardbourgh’s daughter is O’Neal’s oldest child. The team debuted in the American Basketball League (ABL) last year and played its home games on the campus of Houston Baptist University. Chambers said joining the ABA was a

The Legends secured Fort Bend ISD’s 1,800-seat Wheeler Fieldhouse, across the street from the First Colony Mall, for the season, and their head coach is Calvin Murphy Jr., the son of former Houston Rockets standout Calvin Murphy. The Legends’ next home game will be Jan. 18 against the Dallas Impact. Chambers said the team is encouraging residents and business owners to watch the team in person. For the remainder of the season, the Legends will sponsor a series of “Small Business Sundays” with each of their home games, all of which take place on Sundays.

Is it time for a second opinion?

ost clients truly don’t know how to judge the job that their financial professional is doing for them. And, many think, “Oh, they are all the same.” Actually, in the financial world there are two legal standards of care — the fiduciary standard and the suitability standard. One requires a fiduciary to “do what’s in your best interest”, the other requires a broker or registered April R. Roberts, J.D. representative to “do what’s suitable”. Which would you prefer that your financial professional follow? Please visit our website at www. robertswealth.com for more information on these standards or call our office, and we’ll be happy to send you information. In addition, think about the following questions. If any of these questions make you think or if you feel the answer “in your gut,” as we like to say, then it’s likely that you’d benefit from a second opinion:
• Has your financial professional ever fully evaluated your life insurance, annuity, and LTC needs, particularly if you have had a major life event — like marriage, kids, divorce, retirement, etc.? • Has your financial professional ever fully disclosed all of the fees you are paying for your investments and his/her advice? If so, were you surprised at what he/she said? • When you sat down with your financial professional at your last meeting and went over your investment and income strategy to make sure everything was still on track, were you satisfied with your situation? • Have you experienced a level of decline in the value of your retirement savings that is unacceptable to you? If so, what did your financial professional do to help protect your assets from future potential market losses? Time for a second opinion? Why not? Give us a call and let’s set a time to sit down for our complimentary 3 Step Review (Taxes, Income, Risk) to see just how your financial professional measures up.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is first in Fort Bend to use new angioplasty system
H
ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is the first in Fort Bend County to treat peripheral arterial disease (PAD) using a new drug-coated balloon catheter during angioplasty, a surgery to restore blood flow through an artery in the heart. Vascular surgeon Imran Mohiuddin, M.D., performed the procedure in early November on a patient in Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s state-of-theart cardiac catheterization lab. PAD is a life-threatening condition that affects millions of Americans. Narrowed arteries can reduce blood flow to the extremities and create a number of serious medical conditions, including the need for limb amputation. Traditionally, PAD has been treated by inserting a catheter into the artery and inflating a small balloon-like device to compress the build-up of plaque on the arterial wall and widen the artery.
Imran Mohiuddin, M.D. and patient, Lorraine Morton.
The new Lutonix® system takes that process one step further, with a balloon that is pre-treated with the drug paclitaxel, typically used in chemotherapy to prevent cell growth. When the balloon is inflated within the artery at the site of the narrowing, paclitaxel is transferred to arterial walls, where it reduces the amount of scar tissue at the site. “The combination of plaque compression and paclitaxel enables physicians to treat the
initial blockage as well as help prevent the recurrence of stenosis, or the narrowing of arteries,” says Dr. Mohiuddin. “Re-stenosis is a common problem with traditional percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. But the Lutonix system makes it possible to keep the treated artery open and allow sufficient blood flow for a longer period of time, reducing the risk of PAD in many patients.” Studies show that the Lutonix drugcoated balloon improves patient blood flow by about 30 percent when compared with traditional balloon angioplasty. Approximately 90 percent of patients treated with the Lutonix system did not require further re-intervention within one year. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Mohiuddin, or another vascular surgeon on staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, call 281-274-7500. Slow Your Aging – Why Would You Want To?
Ken and Sheryl Roche invite you to come and see how 20 minutes twice per week can make a positive change in your life.
O
ne metaphor for aging during your life is that of riding an escalator up. Ever ascending on your aging escalator, at some point you reach
‘the top’ [death]. DON’T let pre-mature aging push down on you. Choose NOW to slow your aging process at a cellular level - where slowing your aging must begin. How? Strength training. University of New Mexico: Research on Strength Training And Slowing Aging “…after 26 weeks of resistance training, the researchers identified 179 genes associated with age and exercise showing a reversal of their gene expression. This means quite literally that the resistance training was not only slowing, but also reversing, the aging process at the gene level.”
can entwine enabling productive and rewarding work. This also happens to be when your muscle is fast on the decline, pre-mature aging, unless it is sustained. Additionally, it is projected that by 2020, the proportion of the U.S. labor force composed of older adults [55+] will be 25.2% and the workforce median age of 42.8. Prime ages for building and sustaining muscle. People are working longer because they have to or want to. While there are many rewards to slowing your aging, in addition to a vibrant work life, the trend of ‘an older workforce’, is one compelling reason to slow your aging through strength training.

Fort Bend EDC discusses proposed legislation By Michael Sudhalter msudhalter @ fortbendstar.com
F
ort Bend County Judge Bob Hebert and county commissioners Andy Meyers and James Patterson discussed some of the legislation proposed for the 84th session of the Texas Legislature during the Fort Bend Legislative Conference last week in Austin. State Rep. Rick Miller (R-Sugar Land) is proposing that all of the toll roads in the state grant exemptions to Purple Heart and Medal of Honor recipients, as well as disabled veterans. Currently, the North Texas Toll Road Authority in the Dallas-Fort Worth area is the only toll road that doesn’t grant exemptions. State Rep. Gene Wu (D-Houston) is one of the legislators who would like 17-year-olds to be declared “legal juveniles” in the state. Texas is one of the few states where 17 year olds are regarded as adults. The legislation would have an impact
because it would move 17 year olds from county jails, to juvenile detention centers with 10-to-16 years. Currently, the 17-yearolds in Texas county jails are “adults with an asterisk”, according to Hebert, because they’re separated BOB HEBERT from the rest of the jail Fort Bend Judge population. Hebert said the idea of moving 17-year-old prisoners to juvenile justice centers would be OK, provided that the state allows “time and funding” to make the transition a smooth one. Meyers, who is the Commissioner over an area with a large population of unincorporated residents, raised the possibility of those residents being able to vote themselves out of an Extraterritorial Jurisdiction if that jurisdiction doesn’t annex the unincorporated area for a set period of time. Meyers said that would allow sales tax dollars to be spent locally.
Meyers also brought up the possibility of a short line railroad from Rosenberg to the Port of Freeport that “would have a major impact regionally, statewide, and nationally” with the potential to create approximately 30,000 jobs. Texas A&M economist Dr. Mark G. Dotzour was a guest speaker at the conference and spoke of the booming economy in America, especially in Texas. “The state bird of Texas is the Construction Crane,” Dotzour joked. Dotzour said residential homes must continue to be built in Texas, so demand doesn’t become too high for housing. Dotzour said the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was “a messy overreaction” that has prevented those capable of buying a home from doing so. With regards to commercial real estate, the outlook is ideal, said Dotzour. “Commercial Real Estate is at record highs, and everyone internationally is investing in the United States,” Dotzour said. “American Manufacturing is coming back.”

Plans for continuation of Sienna Plantation introduced with addition of the village of Sawmill Lake
I
nitial plans for the continuation of Sienna Plantation have been announced to include the masterplanned community’s newest village, The Village of Sawmill Lake, where construction of new homes is expected to begin on 500 home sites, including 45 homes in a gated neighborhood, in spring 2015. The Village of Sawmill Lake, named after the sawmills which operated in the area in the mid 1800s, also includes a 15-acre elementary school site purchased by the Fort Bend Independent School District and a 32-acre middle school site currently under contract by the District. Children in Sienna Plantation currently attend three existing on-site elementary schools, an on-site middle school and a new high school among several others in the highly acclaimed Fort Bend Independent School District.
Sienna Plantation.
Sienna Plantation’s newest village is part of a 3,700-acre parcel purchased in January by the luxury homebuilder Toll Brothers in a joint venture with the private equity firm GTIS Partners. The two parties later entered into an agreement with The Johnson Development Corp., developer of Sienna Plantation, to act as primary developer of the acreage.
“We’re looking to build on Sienna Plantation’s outstanding reputation,” says Karl Mistry, Houston Division President of Toll Brothers, noting that since its inception, Sienna Plantation has consistently ranked as one of the nation’s top-selling master-planned communities. “Our plan is to maintain Sienna Plantation’s architectural standards to create a seamless addition to the community.” Toll Brothers will build luxury homes on larger lots in The Village of Sawmill Lake while other builders will be announced in the coming weeks. Twelve model homes are expected to open in March 2015 to create one of Houston’s largest model home collections. Plans also call for the addition of residentonly amenity centers with the first scheduled to open in 2016 along the banks of Sawmill Lake in the northeast section of the village. Several commercial properties also are available for sale.

M
emorial Hermann Life Flight®, the only hospitalbased air ambulance serving Houston and surrounding communities, has added yet another groundbreaking innovation to its already long list of “firsts,” becoming the first airambulance program in Southeast Texas to be granted authority to conduct flights under instrument flight rules (IFR) by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). This new capability allows Life Flight crews to utilize aircraft flight instruments and advanced navigation systems rather than relying solely on visual cues or what is referred to in aviation as visual flight rules (VFR). “By becoming IFR-certified, we are now able to operate safely during the en route phase regardless of visibility and cloud ceilings,” said Christopher “Todd” Grubbs, ATP, chief pilot of Life Flight. “This capability allows our crews to serve the community when weather conditions might restrict flights under VFR. We can go above the clouds or in the clouds using our autopilot and our navigation instrumentation. Every airline conducts flights using IFR, and now we are operating under the same conditions.” It’s estimated that Life Flight, which is part of the world renowned Memorial Hermann Texas Trauma Institute, currently misses an average of 600 flights annually due to inclement weather, affecting close to 15 percent of patient flight requests. While some flights may still not be possible in cases of extremely bad weather conditions, the use of IFR will significantly expand Life Flight’s ability to safely serve the community since weather decisions for flight requests can now be made with greater certainty. “The maximum benefit of flying under IFR is to avoid the risks associated with flying during those conditions. The safety of our crew and patients is our No. 1 priority,” said Grubbs. In an effort to maximize its new IFR capabilities and further reduce patient transport time, the program is even adding its
20
Memorial Hermann Life Flight® Now Conducting Flights Under IFR own proprietary global positioning system (GPS) procedures to several of the hospitals and heliports in the Greater Houston area. These procedures will allow for direct takeoff and landing at multiple locations that historically might be restricted to use under VFR only. Together, all of these advancements mean healthcare and prehospital providers across the region can now depend upon Life Flight’s much-needed service more than ever. In addition, the program’s new capabilities have the potential to positively affect patient outcomes across the region by allowing air transport versus ground transport in many cases. “Many physicians rightfully worry about the length of time it takes a critically ill patient to be transported by ground, and they are forced to carefully weigh the risks and benefits,” said Eric von Wenckstern, administrative director of Life Flight. “We aim to make that decision easier by continuing to expand the services Life Flight offers.” To achieve the prestigious IFR certification, Life Flight pilots undergo rigorous training and are required to achieve airline transport pilot (ATP) licensure, which is the same required of pilots who fly commercial airplanes. The didactic and practical portions of the IFR training January 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
curriculum take approximately one month to complete and involve meeting the most challenging standards in aviation. The Life Flight fleet, which completes more than 3,000 missions each year, consists of six Airbus EC-145 helicopters, all of which are IFR-capable and equipped for single-pilot operation. The John S. Dunn Helipad at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center can accommodate four helicopters at one time and is considered one of the busiest helipads in the United States. In addition to the 21 pilots, the nationally acclaimed Life Flight team includes 21 flight nurses, 18 paramedics/ dispatchers and five mechanics. Each helicopter is inspected and serviced daily. Life Flight was recently named winner of the Texas Department of State Health Services’ 2014 EMS Air Medical Service of the Year Award. This marks the program’s third time to achieve the prestigious recognition which honors the top air medical service in Texas that has demonstrated the highest standards in providing patient care while leading the way in innovation and commitment to patient care. Founded in 1976 by James “Red” Duke, M.D., who still serves as medical director of the program today, the service retrieves critically ill and injured patients in the Greater Houston area and beyond, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

The sky is the limit in the University of HoustonVictoria School of Arts & Sciences. The school offers the widest range of degrees at UHV and has been blazing a trail for future generations of students. As part of the UHV School of Arts & Sciences, students can study topics including publishing, digital gaming, criminal justice, creative writing, political science, mathematics, history, biology and computer science. Classes are taught by award-winning faculty members. For students who attend face-to-face courses in Fort Bend or Victoria, class sizes are small and allow for more interaction and focused learning. Students also can take courses online for enhanced convenience and accessibility. “At the UHV School of Arts & Sciences, we work to empower our students to pursue and excel in any field they choose,” said Jeffrey Di Leo, dean of the UHV School of Arts & Sciences. “Our main objective is to offer the best, most comprehensive education possible to prepare all UHV students for a better and brighter future.” The school has made some significant additions in the past few years, including new degree programs. The school added its first terminal degree, a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing. Other new degrees include a Master of Science in computer science, a general studies concentration within the Bachelor of Applied Arts & Sciences, and a Master of Science in biomedical sciences – professional science. The school’s online BAAS in computer information systems was ranked No. 4 in the nation in affordability by GetEducated.com. UHV is home to a variety of publications and printing presses, including Chax Press, the American Book Review, CentroVictoria and symploke. These play instrumental roles in the university’s undergraduate and graduate publishing programs. For students who wish to pursue a career in law enforcement, the school’s criminal justice program was ranked by TheBestSchools.org as the 13th best online criminal justice program in the nation. That online access is especially useful for those who already are working in law enforcement and wish to further their education.

“The criminal justice program at UHV was convenient and helpful,” said Stuart Denton, a 2014 UHV graduate and captain in the Sugar Land Police Department. “It gave me a new perspective on the work I already was doing in my current career. Since the mid-1990s, The University of Houston-Victoria has offered classes in Fort Bend County, which is now home to the University of Houston Sugar Land where UHV offers many of its programs. The UHV School of Business Administration is proud of its history of service in Fort Bend County. Even though some changes are coming to UH Sugar Land in the next few years, the school intends to continue offering the most affordable, accessible and flexible business degrees available in Fort Bend County. Students have the opportunity to learn from a faculty of 45 tenured and tenure-track professors from around the globe. “The School of Business Administration places a great deal of emphasis on the importance of knowledge and the ability to use that knowledge in a practical setting,” said Farhang Niroomand, dean of the UHV School of Business Administration. “Students who attend UHV can expect to receive a thorough, practical education that will serve them well as they build their careers in the global business market.” The UHV School of Business Administration offers classes in Sugar Land, Katy, Victoria and online in areas such as accounting, finance, marketing, supply chain management and health care management. Students have the opportunity to earn a Bachelor of Business Administration, Master of Business Administration or Master of Science in Economic Development & Entrepreneurship. The school is fully accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, which accredits less than 10 percent of business schools worldwide. “At UHV, the flexibility of the MBA
program meant I could study at a good pace to understand the class materials and relate it to something practical,” said Adeyinka Ariyo, a 2014 graduate of UHV who moved to Sugar Land from England to earn her master’s degree. “The professors are really great, and the diversity is a big plus here.” On top of the school’s academic offerings, students have the opportunity to learn from some of the industry leaders in Texas through the UHV Willis Group Distinguished Speaker Series. The series started in 2011 and brings in regional business executives to share their experiences, strategies and stories of inspiration with students. Previous speakers include John Ragan, executive vice president of NRG; Rod Canion, co-founder of Compaq Computers; Scott McClelland, president of H-E-B Houston; and Scott Wagner, founder of Saint Arnold’s Brewing Co. The UHV School of Business Administration has about 750 MBA students and 1,000 BBA students, and the student body is diverse. Many are first-generation residents or U.S. citizens from minority populations. In 2013, the school received a

Students have the option of taking faceto-face degree programs in Sugar Land or Katy, or pursuing a number of degrees through the school’s comprehensive online programs. “Access to higher education is readily available at UHV,” said Fred Litton, dean of the UHV School of Education & Human Development. “We have complete programs for teaching, administration and counseling. We are in the business of preparing effective 21st century educators, counselors and school administrators.” In 2012, the UHV School of Education & Human Development started offering classes at the Houston Community College Katy campus. Four faculty members are housed in Katy, where UHV offers a

Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree for future teachers. “The Katy area is growing so quickly,” said Amy Barnhill, a UHV associate professor of literacy. “Katy, Fort Bend, Lamar and Cypress-Fairbanks school districts are expanding and have needs for high-quality teachers. Those districts have hired our graduates, so our students have not had to relocate. They can live, get their degree and start their teaching career without ever leaving their communities.” Four additional UHV faculty members have offices at UH Sugar Land. UHV offers several face-to-face counseling and educational leadership courses in Sugar Land. The university has master’s degree programs in school counseling, adult and higher education, and a new 60-credit-hour master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling, which is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. The school recently obtained an $850,737 January 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
federal grant that will provide $10,000 student internship stipends for mental health counseling students. UHV also offers an online Master of Education in special education for students from special and general education backgrounds and for those working in organizations serving the needs of people with disabilities. “I liked the convenience of taking online classes,” said Lisa Flores, who recently completed her UHV Master of Education with educational diagnostician certification while working as a special education teacher. “It also helped that the coursework lined up with what I already was doing in my classroom. Now, I’m more knowledgeable, so I’m up for the challenges ahead.” Another popular UHV program is the superintendent certification. The online program, which is designed for practicing administrators, can be completed in one year. Courses allow students to build relationships with other students for mutual support and motivation. “I think Dean Litton has done a fabulous job bringing a variety of programs to UHV,” Barnhill said. “A goal of the school as a whole is to develop new programs to attract more students. I think we are on a good path, and our administration has really been innovative and supportive of the educational needs in Fort Bend.” For more information about the UHV School of Education & Human Development, email education@uhv.edu, or call 281-275-3370.

Although the UHV School of Nursing has existed for only eight years, its graduates already are flourishing in a number of nursing careers. According to Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board figures, 86 percent of UHV nursing alumni are working in the field. In addition, in 2014, the UHV Second Degree Bachelor of Science in Nursing students had the highest National Council of State Boards of Nursing pass rate, 94.45 percent, of any university in Greater Houston. “I’m extremely proud of what our students have accomplished and their contributions to the nursing profession,” said Kathryn Tart, dean of the UHV School of Nursing. “Word has spread in Fort Bend and beyond about the quality, convenience and affordability of our programs. We have developed a reputation for equipping nurses with the advanced knowledge and tools to be future leaders.” Vicki Brownewell, vice president and Chief Nursing Officer for Houston Methodist West Hospital, said the hospital has hired several UHV graduates, and they have done well. “We started hiring UHV graduates in January 2011, just after the hospital opened, and 100 percent of them successfully completed their one-year nursing residency,” she said. “Many of them have advanced rapidly and are now acting as preceptors and mentors for new graduates.” UHV offers an accelerated, 12-month Registered Nurse to BSN program that includes classroom instruction and clinical work. The RN to BSN degree is the school’s largest program. The school also has a Second Degree BSN program for those holding
bachelor’s degrees in other fields who want to become RNs. The Master of Science in Nursing program is designed to build upon the BSN degree. Master’s students are prepared to function at advanced levels with an expanded knowledge of theory, research and clinical application. Three program tracks are offered – family nurse practitioner, nursing administration and nursing education. The Board of Commissioners of the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education recently voted to continue accreditation for bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UHV until Dec. 31, 2024. “What this welcoming news says about the UHV baccalaureate and master’s programs is that we’ve met the highest level of quality set by this profession,” Tart said. The UHV School of Nursing will be transitioning to the University of Houston in fall 2015, pending approval by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. The transition will allow for future growth and expansion. The current faculty, programs, clinical rotations and all teaching locations, including UH Sugar Land, will remain the Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal H January 2015
same during the transition to UH. The transition is scheduled for Aug. 1. Starting in fall 2015, nursing students will graduate from UH. In terms of accreditation, Tart said the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education is aware of and supports the transition. Carrie Wise, a fall 2014 Second Degree BSN graduate from Richmond, said she enjoyed meeting new people at UHV and interacting with her professors and fellow aspiring nurses. “The campus is lovely, and the nursing faculty members are amazing,” Wise said. “They are truly dedicated to the success of their students. I really appreciate what they taught me.” For more information about UHV nursing degrees, visit www.uhv.edu/nursing or call 877-970-4848, ext. 4370.

Fort Bend ISD receives State’s Top Rating for Cost-Effective Spending and Academic Progress For the third consecutive year, Fort Bend ISD has been awarded five stars in the Texas Comptroller’s annual Financial Allocation Study for Texas, or FAST ratings. The annual study examines both academic performance and financial efficiency at Texas’ school districts and campuses and was developed by the Texas Comptroller’s Office in response to a directive by the 81st Texas Legislature to identify districts, charter operators, and campuses that deliver a high-quality education at relatively low costs. In the 2014 FAST results, released Wednesday, December 3, Fort Bend ISD received the highest rating of five stars, indicating the strongest relative academic progress combined with the lowest relative spending. A rating of one to five stars is determined by combining a district’s spending index to its composite progress percentile, which is a percentile ranking of reading and math progress. The 2014 FAST ratings included data from
the 2010-11, 2011-12, and 2012-13 school years. “Fort Bend ISD is proud to offer a quality education to more than 72,000 students,” said FBISD Superintendent Dr. Charles Dupre. “The five stars earned in the 2014 FAST ratings are the result of a collaborative effort among our District educators and its administrators. Our teachers work hard every day to make sure each student is reaching his or her full potential, and the administration and Board of Trustees work diligently to be good stewards of taxpayer funds.” The 2014 FAST measures also rate individual campuses in academic growth and spending. Four Fort Bend ISD campuses received the highest rating of five stars: Jan Schiff Elementary, Sienna Crossing Elementary, Walker Station Elementary, and Sartartia Middle School. In addition, 14 campuses received ratings of four and a half stars. The complete FAST ratings are available to view at www.fastexas.org.

rendmaker Homes has opened its new luxury townhome model in Imperial, Sugar Land’s newest masterplanned community at Highway 6 and Highway 90A, where it presents a dramatic, open living concept for young professionals and active empty nesters seeking a ‘couples lifestyle’ without the maintenance associated with a traditional single-family home. Trendmaker’s new one and two-story lifestyle homes, ranging from 1,900 - 2,900 square feet, are designed in the Acadiana style reminiscent of the French Quarter with entry, dining room, gourmet kitchen and family room all on the same level with the back door visible from the front door. The single-story townhome model in Imperial at 426 Imperial Boulevard offers a covered front porch and a covered breezeway connecting the home to a threecar rear garage. Three two-story floor plans also are available with a master suite and living spaces on the first floor and extra bedrooms on the second floor. All of Trendmaker’s 27 luxury townhomes face Imperial Boulevard, one of the community’s signature thoroughfares. January 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
“The townhomes offer the value of home ownership without the hassle and worry of home maintenance,” notes Trendmaker Homes’ President Will Holder. “That certainly appeals to those downsizing from a larger home or young families just starting out.” The opening of Trendmaker’s fully furnished townhome model continues Imperial’s strong momentum as it heads into 2015. Earlier this year, several luxury patio home models opened in Imperial as the community welcomed its first families. Residents of Imperial, the newest master-planned community by The Johnson Development Corp., are walking distance to a weekly Farmers Market, winding trails, lush greenbelts and Constellation Field, home of the Sugar Land Skeeters. In 2016, the Fort Bend Children’s Discovery Center will open in a restored building with a look and feel similar to the award-winning Children’s Museum of Houston For more information on Imperial Sugar Land and to receive the latest news and updates from the community, go to www.ImperialSugarLand.com and “like” the community at www.facebook.com/ imperialsugarland.
