New developments bring quality living to Fort Bend County
Q
uality begets quality. Sienna Plantation already has a reputation as one of the best places to live in Fort Bend County. The community continues to build on that reputation of excellence with new neighborhoods, including the gated enclave of Fox Bend and Rosewood, Sienna Plantation’s fourth patio home neighborhood. As you will see in our cover story this month, estate homebuilders Toll Brothers and Gracepoint Homes have recently opened model luxury homes in Fox Bend and Darling Homes and Trendmaker Homes are now showing models in Rosewood. In Fox Bend, the new Toll Brothers models start around $580,000 and the Gracepoint Homes go from $700,000 on up. The Rosewood homes begin in the $360,000s for Darling Homes and $440,000s for Trendmaker. Elsewhere in Sienna Plantation, homebuyers can find townhomes, executive homes and custom homes priced from the $280,000s to more than $1 million. The new communities are an asset not only to Sienna Plantation but to the entire region. Their elegant designs, quality construction and state-of-the-art amenities are a great attraction, not to mention a boost to the local economy and tax base. Along with the new communities come new and better amenities and services such as parks, trails and schools.
Residents there enjoy wonderful amenities, including several water parks, more than 100 acres of parks, several miles of walking trails, tennis courts, a newly expanded fitness center, the 160-acre Camp Sienna sports park and proximity to Sienna Plantation Golf Club. Slated to open in 2017 is Sienna’s fourth recreation complex, Sawmill Lake Club. “Having such a range of home designs means Sienna Plantation can be home to families for generations,” said Alvin San Miguel, general manager of Sienna Plantation. “Young families, those with older children, empty nesters and others will be able move into a home suitable to their current lifestyle while remaining close to friends and family who happen to live in Sienna.” When it comes to quality of life, Sienna Plantation is hard to beat. These new communities certainly contribute to the quality of life there and throughout the region. We are glad to have them here and are eager to meet our future neighbors. Welcome to Fort Bend County, we’re glad you’re here.

Do you really want your children to care for you?
N
o matter how much you love your children, there’s a good chance you don’t want them physically taking care of you when you’re older. Most of my clients want to maintain their dignity, pay for someone to take care of them, and stay at home if possible. I’m guessing that you’re the same. I doubt that going into a nursing home is on your list of retirement goals. On the flip side, if your children work or have children themselves, it may not be possible for them to care for you, as you need. My mom recently had surgery to remove a baseball-sized tumor from her kidney. While I’m happy to report that she’s now fully recovered and back to her energetic, get things done self, the week that she spent in the hospital and the weeks of recovery were physically, emotionally, and spiritually exhausting for my father, me, and the rest of our family. I truly admire anyone who dedicates their time to caring for a sick or elderly family member.
Americans are living longer than ever have before, health care costs are on the rise, and fewer employers are offering health care coverage. With the median annual cost for care in an April R. Roberts, J.D. assisted living facility standing at $43,200 and only 8 percent of large employers offering health care plans, most of us need to think about how we’ll pay for health care. A few existing systems other than Social Security can help pay for long-term health care costs. They include Medicare, Medicaid, and personal savings. You could plan to use your personal savings to cover any long-term care costs you may
encounter, allowing you to maintain control over your assets and ensure there are no restrictions on the type of care you choose to receive. However, as stated earlier, these costs can be considerable. If long-term care costs increase, and your retirement assets shrink, you may run the risk of depleting your retirement savings. In our advanced planning process, we help our clients plan for these contingencies. If you don’t have a plan in place for LTC, give us a call and we can talk about our innovative planning that helps keep your assets in your family. And, if you’d like a second opinion on any retirement plan that you have, we can help with that as well. Can’t wait to hear from you! Yours,
April

ith two brothers already at the University of Houston, Clements High School senior Angela Lin really didn’t know how her family could help her get into college. Last year she participated in the H&R Block Budget Challenge, a 10-week financial literacy competition that her teacher was exploring. “It was a fun idea to learn about personal management and I liked the concept of simulation and making choices. But I didn’t believe I was capable of winning anything. I did the bare minimum,” she recalled. Then she started thinking about college and told herself, “if I get a chance next year...” The chance came and Angela was ready. She signed up again for the challenge but this time she committed to doing the research and knowing herself. She developed spreadsheets, made choices on insurance deductibles, planned how to spend paychecks and how to pay bills. She won $20,000 in the competition along with four classmates. She was stunned to learn she’d also won the $100,000 grand prize out of 150,000 students across the nation. Lin was standing on stage as they announced the $20,000 winners. Then they produced her $120,000 check. “I burst into tears. I fell to the stage ground. I can’t believe it. To be honest, I’m still in shock,” she said. Her father lives in Taiwan and sends home money to support the family. “I don’t have to worry so much about how to pay for college. Now I can get unpaid internships that will help me instead of passing up opportunities because I need a job,” said the Sugar Land native. Her mother, Amy Dai, a teacher, was present when Angela received the grand prize. “She was so cute; she was like a giddy little child. Like someone who got their first piece of ice cream,” recalled her daughter. She

spoke to her father on the phone. “My father said ‘I knew it, I knew it. You are a hard working young woman and I know good things would come to you,’” Lin said. She sees the scholarship as a blessing for her parents. “My parents worked so hard and it’s a huge burden. I can help my brothers too,” she said. Her oldest brother is studying entrepreneurship and marketing and her second brother has a double degree in mechanical engineering and supply chain management. Angela wants a double major in management systems and marketing with maybe a minor in entrepreneurship, she said. She has unlimited dreams. “I want to do something with international business making the connection to different countries. Since I’m ethnically Taiwanese I’m wondering if I want to do something that helps Taiwan and American products. I want to start my own scholarship fund and can start giving back to the community. Five ways you can help your future Lawyer
T
4. Follow “Thumper’s Law”—“If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.” In business, disparaging or unprofessional correspondence or words will be used against you and make for negative trial exhibits if you are sued.
5. Don’t ignore a lawsuit: There are deadlines to answer a lawsuit. Whether the lawsuit is frivolous to you or not, you or an attorney needs to respond or you risk a default judgment against you.
5. Call an attorney early-not later. If you are more interested in “saving money” by handling your own case, don’t be surprised if you seek an attorney later and you see how expensive it is to assist with your representation later on with your case.
he following are examples of how you can help a lawyer you approach to assist with your representation – before encountering legal trouble:
4. Don’t rely on legal advice from television . . . or a “friend of a friend” who was in a similar legal situation. 3. Get it in writing: When doing business with individuals (yes, even those you know), make sure to keep documentation of the transaction(s) and get any agreements in writing.

Freezing people a hot trend for good health By Joe Southern
R
obert Garza and Robert Ezzell have the coolest job in town. They along with their partner Simon Maldonado own Lonestar Cryo. They quite literally get to spend the day chilling their clients. “It’s a modern version of an ice bath,” Garza said. Cryotherapy is a relatively new therapy with multiple benefits. Nitrogen vapor is used to rapidly cool the body resulting in a rush of re-oxygenated blood as the subject warms up again. “It feels good – it feels really good,” said Rene Torrez of Fresno, who had just stepped out of he chamber after his first treatment. “It gets the blood flowing.” Garza said the therapy was developed as
a way to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It didn’t take long for other benefits to emerge. Athletes in particular have started using it as a way to allow them to train harder and recover faster. It also boosts metabolism, aiding in weight loss. Garza said they have several professional athletes who use their service, among them are football, basketball and baseball players, including members of the Sugar Land Skeeters. “Athletes make it a part of their routine,” Garza said. Torrez plays flag football and is using cryotherapy to help him get back into shape to play running back. Ezzell and Garza explained that there are three levels of treatment. The average person is in the cooling chamber for about two to three minutes and there are three levels of cooling to select from, the coldest

being minus-270 degrees. The goal is to drop the surface temperature of the skin by 25-30 degrees. “It only penetrates a millimeter beneath the skin,” Garza said. As the body cools, it naturally brings blood in from the extremities to help protect the inner core. As it does that, the blood is re-oxygenated, filled with nutrients and thickens. Once the client leaves the chamber and begins to warm up, the blood quickly flows back throughout the body. “You feel more energized … it amps you up for sure,” Garza said. The cooling also helps heal inflammation, which helps with sore muscles and joints. “Older folks are the ones who benefit from it the most,” he said. Ezzell said it has the same effect as an ice bath but is quicker and less discomforting. In addition to the full-body chamber (the head stays outside), there is a spot-treatment device that blows the supercooled air onto a focused area such as a shoulder, elbow, leg or back. It takes longer, about 10 minutes, but is just as effective. Upon arrival, a first-time guest is given an overview of the process, pays their fee ($20 for the first session) and signs a waiver. They then go into a changing room, strip down to their skivvies and put on a robe, socks and slippers. Returning to the main room, their temperature is checked with a laser thermometer just above the knee. The client then enters the chamber, the door is closed and they slip out of the robe. They hand the robe to the operator and put

gloves on. The socks and gloves protect the fingers and toes from frostbite. Once the client is ready, the lid is lowered with an opening that allows the head to stay outside the chamber. The operator activates the switches and the
chamber begins to fill with nitrogen vapor. Once the session is over, the lid is lifted and the client exchanges gloves for the robe and exits the chamber. Their temperature is re-checked to see if they dropped to the desired level. From there they get changed

and the session is over. Garza said the treatment could be stopped at any time if the client becomes uncomfortable or claustrophobic. The nitrogen is safe to breathe as it occurs naturally in the air. There is no age limit for the therapy, although minors and children require a parent’s signature on the waiver. There is a height requirement of five feet. Anyone under that is too short for the chamber. Lonestar Cryo is currently located at 126C Eldridge Road in Sugar Land. As far at Ezzell and Garza know, they are the only ones offering cryotherapy in Fort Bend County. They opened the business in February and have been steadily growing. They anticipate the need to relocate and expand before too long. “We’ve got a pretty strong membership base,” Garza said. In the meantime, they can be reached at 713-825-0706, lonestarcryotherapy@ gmail.com or online at lonestarcryotherapy. com. Feel free to give them a call. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital celebrates expansion with physician office staff

ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital celebrated the hospital’s ongoing expansion by hosting a special luncheon for the often “unsung heroes” of medicine – office managers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, medical assistants and other professionals who provide the first level of patient care and keep physician offices running smoothly. More than 175 people attended the event, which included brief presentations on the sixth floor opening of the new Brazos Pavilion and the new Critical Care Intensivist Program, followed by a Q&A with CEO Chris Siebenaler. “Physician office staff members play a critical role in every patient’s treatment process,” Siebenaler said. “We are honored to celebrate the hospital’s growth, leading technology and expanded services, and to share our excitement for the future with them.” Office staff members were pleased to learn that Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s second patient care unit in the Brazos Pavilion has opened; the first being the Brazos ICU on the second floor. The sixth floor opened 16 beds as of May 16, with plans to expand to 28. This unit is dedicated to general medical/surgical, gynecology and urology patients. “I enjoy attending these luncheons and finding out the latest and greatest about

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. Knowing this information allows us to be up-to-date for our physicians, office staff and patients. It is wonderful to be a part of a hospital that continues to evolve and expand to meet the growing population of our community,” said Michelle Benton, Southwest OB/GYN Administrator. “Our physicians rest assured knowing our patients are receiving the best care with the latest state-of-the-art technology all in one convenient place and so close to home.” The fifth floor of the Brazos Pavilion is scheduled to open next, with a goal of opening within three to six months, once all necessary staff has been recruited. “As the Fort Bend and surrounding areas continue to grow, the hospital must also grow to meet the needs of the community,” said Siebenaler. “With the building and staff enhancements we continue to make, Houston Methodist Sugar Land will continue to be the premier health care provider in Fort Bend.” In addition to the new Brazos Pavilion, the ICUs at Houston Methodist Sugar Land will soon be the only ICUs in the area to be staffed by specially trained

critical care physicians, who will be on-site 24/7. While providing compassionate care to every patient is the top priority of Houston Methodist Sugar Land, it is also important to keep the physicians, their office staff and patients informed of expansion updates and services through celebrations such as the physician office staff luncheon. “I appreciate the hospital scheduling the staff luncheon because they offer a productive forum to discuss opportunities to enhance interactions between physician offices and the hospital,” said Rebecca Turner, Texas Spine & Neurosurgery Center Administrator. “I enjoy the updates on the many expansion projects on campus, which allows us to intelligently answer patient questions, further assuring them that we have a cohesive relationship with the hospital.” For more information about Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, visit houstonmethodist.org/sugarland or call 281-274-7500 for a physician referral. ce cream doesn’t get any fresher – or colder – than this. Sub Zero Ice Cream and Yogurt opened Friday, June 17, in Sugar Land, bringing to the city a dessert experience like no other. The customer selects the ingredients, which are mixed together and then flash-frozen with a blast of liquid nitrogen at -371 degrees. The Sub Zero franchise is owned and operated by Salim Gheewalla and his family, including his wife Selima, father Nooralla and mother Noorjehan. It’s only the second to open in the Houston area and is located at
15810 Southwest Freeway, Ste. 300, near Hwy. 6. “It’s made-to-order ice cream,” Gheewalla said. He said the customer can choose from regular ice cream, yogurt, sugar-free, low-fat, non-dairy and vegan, select from a variety of flavors and then add the “fix-ins” – a wide assortment of fruits, nuts, candies, cakes, etc. to blend into the creamy mixture. The big bowl of ingredients is then passed down the line to a worker who blasts it with liquid nitrogen while stirring it into cold, creamy ice cream. As the nitrogen vaporizes it creates a cloud that pours across the counter like a thick fog. “There are no preservatives and no

The process and the company were created by the husband and wife team of Jerry and Naomi Hancock in Orem, Utah, in 2004. Gheewalla said he was attracted to it because it blends food, fun and science. He employs about 15 people. “We hire local and we hire youth,” he said. Gheewalla has plenty of experience with restaurant franchises, having been previously employed in restaurant development for Subway. He also works as an Internet technology professional. SCHOLARSHIP, continued from page 4
“There are not a lot of females in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) especially those who are not able to afford college, those who are financially less fortunate. I want to help them achieve their dreams,” Lin said. For the H&R Block Budget Challenge, there are six simulations (three per semester) where students across the nation participate in the online simulation where they live the financial life of an adult right out of college. They must decide on a living situation, a cell phone plan, and insurance plans. At the same time, they must also contribute to a 401(k) and develop a credit score. All the while they are being quizzed weekly on financial literacy topics, like credit cards, paycheck stubs and investing options. At the end of the six simulation periods, the scoring for the overall grand prize scholarship winner is determined through a unique formula of behavior, knowledge and skill that show cases the student who is truly ready to embark on a fiscally responsible future. Angela will use her new skills to budget her college expenses and pursue other financial dreams. Texas is one of only seven
states that require high school students to be tested on personal finance concepts before graduation. The H&R Block Budget Challenge offers high school educators free online curriculum that replicates an adult’s financial life. “Too many teens graduate each year without personal finance skills or the confidence to succeed on their own,” said Kathy Collins, H&R Block chief marketing officer. “The H&R Block Budget Challenge helps address a critical need in thousands of high schools each year. Hearing what this program means to teachers and students is so rewarding and reinforces how important this program is,” Collins said. In addition to providing free curriculum, H&R Block has awarded more than $6 million in scholarships and grants nationwide through its Budget Challenge. Lin’s classmates, Jonathan Chang, Ashvin Nihalani and Christopher Winters were among the 132 students who earned $20,000 scholarships this year, and their business education teacher, Gregory Eppes, was among the 60 teachers awarded a $2,500 classroom grant. A new season of the H&R Block Budget Challenge will launch in September. More details will be available at www.hrbds.org.

A TIRZ is a special district that encourages a higher quality of development than would otherwise be possible; a portion of the increase in tax revenues generated within the TIRZ helps fund public infrastructure improvements within the district. “Just as the plaza in front of Sugar Land City Hall is a major focal point for all of Town Square,” said City Manager Allen Bogard, “we believe this plaza will become its own unique destination and gathering place for families, visitors and employers.” In accordance with a long-held vision of Sugar Land residents - including the support of a 2007 citizen-led Visioning Task Force - and the city council, the city’s development of the property will promote capital investment; create new jobs; enhance educational opportunities; increase tourism and provide unique destination activities; and anchor an exciting mixed-used development envisioned to include retail, office, commercial and entertainment amenities - an environment that will be attractive to
major corporations, residents and visitors. Construction continues on the adjacent Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land. A major milestone included the recent installation of glass panels on the front of the building. The Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land is expected to set a new standard in the touring industry and change the entertainment landscape in the “HoustonThe Woodlands-Sugar Land” metro region. It will be capable of hosting a wide range of performances, including national music and comedy artists, theatrical and family entertainment, as well as cultural and performing arts attractions. Designed for flexibility, the 200,000-square-foot venue incorporates innovative moveable walls that can expand and contract to create four different seating capacities that range from an intimate setting of 3,400 seats to a maximum of 6,400. It also features 14 luxury suites, corporate hospitality areas, and the latest sound, lighting and video technology. Other offerings include space to house up to 18 trucks and buses, as well as 2,500 guest parking spaces. Sugar Land is partnering with ACE to design and construct the state-of-the-art facility. The company brings an experienced team of locally-based entertainment industry professionals to the project led by Allen J. Becker, Tony Award-winning founding chairman of PACE Entertainment Corporation, and an executive team with more than 175 years of experience and success in local, national and international entertainment ventures, including pioneering the development of new music and theatrical venues, as well as the entertainment to fill them. Based on voters’ approval of financing tools in 2008, funding is provided through a unique package of special funding sources restricted for economic development and tourism purposes, with no general fund tax dollars being spent on the plaza or the Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land, which on its own is projected to provide an annual benefit to the community of $26.1 million over 30 years. Additionally, ACE made a $10 million equity contribution to the Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land project and will also pay substantial rent revenues generated by the facility.

ienna Plantation’s newest model homes demonstrate the wide range of distinctive home designs prospective buyers can find in the 10,000-acre Fort Bend community. Two estate home builders, Toll Brothers and Gracepoint, recently opened luxuriouslyappointed model homes in the gated enclave of Fox Bend, which offers some of Sienna’s largest properties. Earlier this spring, Darling Homes and Trendmaker Homes opened model homes in Sienna Plantation’s fourth patio home neighborhood, Rosewood.
Luxury builder Toll Brothers has opened an elegant estate model home at 9422 Fox Bend Drive in Sienna Plantation’s gated neighborhood of Fox Bend.
PRESTIGIOUS HOMES, TIMELESS DESIGN Toll Brothers is presenting its Sandhaven design as its model home at 9422 Fox Bend Drive in the neighborhood, where the builder’s pricing starts in the $580,000s. Built as a five-bedroom home reminiscent of a French Country chateau, the model greets guests with a dual staircase of hardwood steps and tile risers. The two-story great room opens to the island kitchen and breakfast area and overlooks a pool and gazebo in the backyard. The master bedroom has a beamed ceiling — one of many designer architectural details found in the home. Tray ceilings are a highlight in the master bath, as is a built-in closet system. Upstairs, a media room and game room expand the home’s entertainment space. The model was decorated by interior designer Martha Odell of Texas-based Creative Design. Toll Brothers asked her to create a French Country look with a contemporary twist. This meant rejecting the traditional colors and styling. “The model had to balance a traditional silhouette shape and form with modern textures and colors,” Odell said. “I used Fox Bend’s gorgeous natural surroundings as inspiration, then covered Old World furniture in modern fabrics and utilized a soft palette of water color blues and greens.” Odell’s favorite rooms are the master suite, the nursery and the two-story study.
Designer Stephanie Quisenberry wanted to create a timeless design in the new Gracepoint Homes’ model in Sienna Plantation, adding splashes of pink to invigorate the neutral color palette.
The study has been a huge hit with male visitors, she said. “I didn’t do a regular study — there isn’t a desk,” she said. “Instead I created this nostalgic, gentleman’s lounge with wingback chairs and pictures from the 1920s and ‘30s.” Designer Stephanie Quisenberry took an organic approach to decorating Gracepoint Homes’ Baxter model at 9423 Fox Bend Lane, utilizing a neutral color palette with pops of understated pink. “I wanted something timeless,” Quisenberry said. “Something classic, livable and comfortable that looked as though it could grow with the family.” Quisenberry’s favorite room is the model’s open great room with a built-in banquet. “I love that there are so many seating areas,” she said. “I like to show people that you can have four or five different conversational areas for entertaining in.” The five-bedroom design also features a double kitchen island and several outdoor living areas, including a front porch, side porch and backyard veranda that offers an outdoor fireplace for year-round use. The master suite has an optional sitting area, two walk-in closets and a statement tub. Upstairs, each of the secondary bedrooms has an en suite bath. The game room offers further entertainment options. Gracepoint’s pricing begins in the $700,000s in Fox Bend.

builder’s signature Texas basements provide 450 square feet of storage space. Priced from the $360,000s, the patio homes range from approximately 2,200 to more than 3,000 square feet. Trendmaker Homes’ model at 9618 Spring Rose Drive is one of 11 designs the builder offers in the community. The wellappointed model is filled with many of today’s must-haves, such as a broad kitchen island with seating, banks of windows throughout the home and multiple outdoor spaces. Standard features include extensive outdoor living areas, island kitchens and three-car garages. Priced from the $440,000s, plans range from approximately 2,400 to more than 3,100 square feet. “Patio home designs have transcended their early beginnings,” said Amy Rino, division president of Darling Homes Houston. “Buyers can now find many of the same luxury features they enjoyed in larger homes while still benefiting from the low-maintenance lifestyle these patio homes afford as well as enjoy updated designs for today’s active lifestyles.”
The four patio and estate home models are among 21 open in Sienna Plantation, where home buyers can also find townhomes, executive homes and custom homes priced from the $280,000s to more than $1 million. “Having such a range of home designs means Sienna Plantation can be home to families for generations,” said Alvin San Miguel, general manager of Sienna Plantation. “Young families, those with older children, empty nesters and others will be able move into a home suitable to their current lifestyle while remaining close to friends and family who happen to live in Sienna.” Residents also enjoy a wealth of amenities, including multiple water parks, more than 100 acres of parks, miles of walking trails, tennis, a newly expanded fitness center, the 160acre Camp Sienna sports park and proximity to Sienna Plantation Golf Club. Slated to open in 2017 is Sienna’s fourth recreation complex, Sawmill Lake Club. Also coming in 2017 is a new elementary school, under construction this summer. A new Sienna middle school is expected to open in 2018.

Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital fulfills wish for pediatric patient to meet Star Wars characters
O
ne pint-sized Star Wars fan at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital recently received a surprise visit from two of her favorite lightsaber-wielding movie characters. Members of the 501st Legion, a worldwide Star Wars fan club that celebrates the Star Wars universe using costumes and props, stopped by Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital to see 10-year-old Lilly Flowers, a Star Wars enthusiast who has been hospitalized with repeated seizures. Lilly was delighted to spend time with the two Jedi warriors, her favorite characters in the series, and was particularly pleased by the appearance of fictional Jedi master Obi-Wan Kenobi. She was even presented a lightsaber of her own to take home. Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital Child Life Specialist Leigh Ann Cutting arranged the meeting after discovering Lilly’s enthusiasm for the movie series. “Lilly is such a huge Star Wars fan that we wanted to find a way to bring the universe to her bedside,” Cutting said. “For many of these patients, a hospital stay is a difficult time, so we jump at every opportunity we get to provide them with a little joy and cheer to brighten their days. And we truly appreciate the 501st Legion for always going the extra mile to bring smiles to our patients’ faces.” This is the latest visit by the group to Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. appeared at the hospital in December ahead of the much-anticipated premiere of the film, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Then on May 4, known worldwide as Star Wars Day or “May the Fourth Be With You,” several men and women clad as Jedi warriors, Stormtroopers, and Darth Vader stopped by to celebrate the occasion with fellow Star Wars enthusiasts.
