Editor’s Preview Welcome to the summer… Michael Sudhalter Editor

W

ell, we’ve braved the winter and enjoyed the bluebonnets in spring. Now, it’s time for graduations, barbecue and Father’s Day. Now it’s time to turn those tassels, fire up the grill and think of something creative for dad (OK, you can buy another tie, if you really want to do that.) Summer allows us the opportunity to enjoy sunny days at the beach, but it’s important to be mindful of health. Use sunscreen if you’re going to be swimming, playing sand volleyball or sun tanning, and be sure to stay hydrated throughout the day. Luckily, Fort Bend County has some of the best medical care in the United States. Whether it’s taking care of your heart, joints, or skin, there are some excellent facilities in our area. We’d like to extend a warm congratulations to Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, which won the prestigious honor – the state’s top award for quality from the Quality Texas Foundation (QTF). Memorial Hermann Sugar Land is the first hospital in the Sugar Land area to earn this honor. Open up to Page 23, and you can read about how Memorial Hermann Sugar Land CEO Greg Haralson and his dedicated team of doctors, nurses and other professionals made the accomplishment a reality. Enjoy the peace of mind knowing that quality medical care is nearby, here in Fort Bend County. Sincerely, Michael

our health is an important factor that can change based upon how you take care of yourself. The way we take care of ourselves varies from person to person with gradual or immediate changes caused by both good and bad practices. In order to stay healthy, I live a lifestyle of eating clean by purchasing organic vegetables and farm- raised eggs. However, a few years ago during an annual doctor visit, my physician shared that in order to be truly healthy, you need to take a holistic approach by exercising and getting an adequate amount of sleep every night. The holistic approach combines a number of good practices to achieve your goal. Why should it be any different with your finances? A well-balanced portfolio provides you with stability to cast a wide net for the results you are seeking. But lets be honest… Sometimes we find reasons to neglect the balance and begin focusing on one tool to seek results that usually turn out to be risky and short term. For instance, weather conditions or work life can cause someone to stop exercising. With finance, current low interest rates are causing retirees to look to the stock market and other investments that may have a higher return rate, but with increased risk and volatility as well. Instead of focusing on the hottest stock picks, best performing mutual fund, or the lowest trade costs, you need to start thinking

about your money differently. First, let’s think about your core nest egg. By core nest egg, we mean money to last you the rest of your life. To build, protect and preserve your nest egg, your portfo- April R. Roberts, J.D. lio needs three different areas of focus. The first category (or piece of the pie as I like to call it) is the “market” where you can make a lot, but you can also lose a lot. The second category is “steady income” which is going to pay you monthly so that you can live the life you want to live in retirement. And the third category is the “safe” area where insurance companies, banks, and U.S. government bonds are located. I’d bet that like many of my clients, you want to see preservation of principal and a reasonable rate of return. A good investment fund blends all three categories: Market, Steady Income and Safe. in comes with $2,500 award to promote school’s efforts in future engineering initiatives A two-member student team from Crockett Middle School was named winner of the 2015 Fluor Engineering Challenge, a competition based on the “Moving on the Moon” challenge created by Flour’s Houston office. Students Emmanuel Ogu and Christopher Pineda won the event’s Balloon-Powered Car Challenge. Fluor partnered with Science Buddies to present the STEM challenge, which welcomed students of all age levels. Ogu and Pineda participate in Crockett’s Project Lead the Way program (PLTW) under the leadership of PLTW/Robotics and Engineering teacher, Richard Embrick. They worked with limited materials and their imaginations to design a balloon-powered car that would withstand the weight of several pennies. They earned the highest score of all entrants in the Houston area based on how few materials they used and how many pennies their car could carry. As the winning team, Ogu and Pineda received $2,500 from Fluor to support their school’s future engineering efforts (such as competition fees, etc.) The students were excited and honored to win the Fluor challenge. “I was really excited when I found out we won,” admitted Emmanuel Ogu. “I didn’t think we had a chance because so many students were competing from around the world. Now we have the opportunity to enter more competitions.” “I feel really proud and happy that we won the award,” said Christopher Pineda. “I’m also happy that the money goes to our school so that we can buy supplies and enter more engineering and robotics competitions.” Students in Crockett’s Lead the Way program have made quite a name for themselves, having won numerous other award competitions during the two years that the program has existed. Teams earned top honors at the Texas A&M Engineering Competition, placing 1st in the Rocket Design Contest, 2nd and 3rd in Oil Rig Design, and 3rd in the Roller Coaster event. “When we started the Robotics and

Sienna Plantation announces builders for Village of Sawmill Lake

A dozen award-winning builders will offer homes in the Village of Sawmill Lake, the newest collection of neighborhoods in Fort Bend’s Sienna Plantation.

S

ienna Plantation has tapped a dozen prominent builders for the Village of Sawmill Lake, the newest collection of neighborhoods in the 10,000-acre master-planned community. Toll Brothers will build in four of the village’s nine neighborhoods: The Mountains, Fox Bend, Logan Pass and The Plaza, offering homes for 75-foot, 85-foot and 100-foot properties. Darling Homes also is building in Logan Pass and The Mountains, as well as Rosewood, a neighborhood of patio homes for 55-foot and 60-foot homesites. Joining Darling Homes in Rosewood is Trendmaker Homes, which will also offer homes in The Plaza, a neighborhood of 85foot properties. Highland Homes is the third builder in The Mountains and Logan Pass neighborhoods.

10

Newmark Homes, Perry Homes and Ryland Homes will build in River Run, the village’s largest neighborhood with 95 50-foot properties. The next largest neighborhood, with 86 60-foot homesites, is The Parish, where Westin Homes and Meritage Homes will offer home designs. Shea Homes is making its Fort Bend County debut in two neighborhoods of the Village of Sawmill Lake, The Orchard and The Vines, where the family-owned builder will be joined by David Weekley Homes. Each builder will have plans designed for 65-foot homesites. Finally, Sienna newcomer Gracepoint Homes will join Toll Brothers in Fox Bend, a neighborhood of 45 100-foot homesites. “This builder mix will offer buyers a broad array of housing choices,” said Alvin San Miguel, general manager of Sienna Plantation. June 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal

“Each of these builders will bring distinctive design to their respective neighborhoods and have impeccable reputations for quality construction and customer service.” In all, the first sections of the Village of Sawmill Lake will have 500 homesites, with pricing from the $280,000s. Model home construction is nearly complete and a public grand opening celebration is planned for May 16-17. The Village of Sawmill Lake is planned for a new amenity center next year and a Fort Bend ISD elementary school and middle school in 2017, increasing the number of on-site schools in Sienna Plantation to seven. Sienna Plantation is a project of The Johnson Development Corp., now celebrating 40 years as one of the nation’s preeminent land developers. For more information, visit www. siennaplantation.com.

Iconic Aggie Muster photo unites three Sugar Land women By S.G. Fredrickson

S

ugar Land residents Janet Lott Brown, Jane Stanbery Ford and Donna Danklefs Kent, friends for years through a local service group, recently discovered they share a unique heritage, one started with the snap of a camera shutter nearly 70 years ago. On April 21, 1946, on Corregidor Island in the Philippines, approximately 120 servicemen came from surrounding bases to respond to the call for Muster – the A&M tradition that remembers fallen Aggies. A smaller Muster in 1942, held during the height of the Battle of Corregidor, had become well-known among Aggies. Twenty-five had answered “here” in 1942; less than half survived the Battle and later POW camps. That day in 1946, Capt. James T. “Teddy” Danklefs, who also helped plan the ‘46 Muster, took a timed photograph, managing to jump into the frame at the lower left corner at the last second. Up four rows on the left, was Second Lt. Robert B. Stanbery Jr., while over to the right stood First Lt. Leroy David “Buddy” Lott. The Musters of ’42 and ’46 have since become legendary at A&M and are often given

credit for bringing Muster to the level of reverence it is today. Many decades later, Danklefs’, Stanbery’s and Lott’s daughters learned of their connection. “I’ve known Janet and Jane for 15 years through Fort Bend Panhellenic,” said Kent. “However, as the only Aggie among the three of us, it never occurred to me we had this bond.” Brown (Tech ‘73) and Ford (UT ’77) realized the relationship at the 2006 memorial for Ford’s father, when the 1946 photograph was shown as part of the service, describing how Stanbery remained “a proud fightin’ Texas Aggie throughout his life.” “After the service,” recalled Ford, “Janet said to me, ‘My father was there as well.’ We were amazed that although we had been friends for many years, we had never known of this link.” Several years later, Kent (A&M ‘79) posted the iconic photo on her Facebook page, commenting how proud she was that her father, who died in 1979, was the photographer. A mutual friend, knowing Ford and Brown’s fathers were in the photo, told Kent about the other two. When the friends met recently to talk about the photo, Brown recalled seeing it in

her father’s study growing up. “While he talked little about his WWII experiences,” she said, “the day must have been a bright spot in the War and a moment of pride for my dad, because the picture was always where it could be seen.” Lott passed away in 1998. On April 21, 2015, many family members of the Aggies in that 1946 photograph will gather on Corregidor Island, to remember and honor 200 WWII Aggie servicemen and dedicate a Corregidor Muster Memorial. Ford, who is making the trip with six other family members, said, “It’s going to be so special standing in the exact spot Daddy did so many years ago. I just wish he were here to see it. I think he would be so proud to have us going, and I am so aware of the closeness of the Aggies and what being at the 1946 Muster meant to them.” Kent’s family donated her father’s other original photographs from April 21, 1946, to the A&M archives, plus documents connected to the planning of the 1946 Muster, including an invitation to Gen. MacArthur and his telegraphed regret. Reflecting on the happenstance of discovering she, Brown and Ford are connected through the 1946 photograph, Kent said she could not help but wonder, “How many other friends or acquaintances also have a connection to this picture?”

Construction crews participate in National Safety Stand-Down

C

onstruction is well underway at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. Work on the 155,000 squarefoot patient tower is on schedule for completion in September 2016 and the 100,000 square-foot Medical Plaza 2 building is scheduled to be finished up by November 2015. On Monday crews put down their hammers, shut down the cranes and stopped pouring concrete to take part in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) National Safety Stand-Down. The purpose of the National Fall Prevention Stand-Down is to raise awareness of preventing fall hazards in construction. “Safety is a top priority of ours every day,” says Todd Harvey, director of Engineering Services at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land. “It’s important to set aside the time to help reinforce the safety practices we already have in place on site.”

14

Work Crews Listen to Presentation on Fall Hazards and Prevention for National Safety Stand-Down.

Last year’s National Safety Stand-Down reached more than one million workers. This year, OSHA’s goal is for more than 20,000 Stand-Downs involving more than three million workers to take place from May 4-15. If that goal is met almost 40 percent of construction workers in the country will have taken part in a Safety Stand-Down. At Memorial Hermann Sugar Land crews listened to a presentation on fall hazards and the importance of fall prevention. The topic is timely considering during fiscal year 2014, fall prevention safety standards were among the top 10 most frequently cited OSHA standards nationwide. Right now Memorial Hermann Health System is Breaking New Ground on five major construction and renovation projects. For the latest news and announcements related to the projects in Cypress, Katy, Pearland, Sugar Land and the Texas Medical Center visit the Breaking New Ground website at www.breakingnewgroundproject. org.

etter Homes & Gardens Real Estate Gary Greene, (BHGRE) pulled out all the stops on its “Let’s Go To The Hop” Katy Sunshine Fest to raise funds for two children’s cancer charities, The Sunshine Kids and Triumph Over Kids Cancer. With the support of such longtime sponsors as Firethorne, ticket sales and matching funds by University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, the annual fundraiser brought in $45,000 to help bring hope and joy to children undergoing cancer treatment, as well as to fund research specific to pediatric cancer. According to Event Chair Bob Miles, a Realtor with BHGRE Gary Greene, Firethorne has partnered with the Katy Sunshine Fest from the benefit’s beginning. This year’s 50s-theme party was held at Faith West Academy in Katy. “We were drawn to help sponsor the Katy Sunshine Fest because cancer is not something

you choose, but it has the potential of changing everyone in the family’s life, not just the patient’s,” said Firethorne Marketing Director Janet Burkett. M.D. Anderson Cancer Center President Dr. Ronald DePinho was a special guest and spoke at the benefit. The Sunshine Kids was established in 1982 to organize a variety of programs for kids receiving cancer treatment across North America. This allows the children time to forget about their treatments, and to spend time with other patients, knowing that they are not alone in their fight – bringing them the joy needed to fight the disease. BHGRE Gary Greene is a long-time sponsor of the Sunshine Kids. This year they added a second charity, Triumph Over Kids Cancer which funds research into pediatric cancer started by James Ragan (himself a Sunshine Kid), and his sister Mecklin, TOKC is dedicated to raising money to help find a cure for cancers that attack children and teens. Firethorne is a 1,400-acre master-planned

community in Katy/Fulshear that will have 3,400 homes with 150 acres devoted to parks and recreational amenities when completed. Family amenities include a resort-style multilevel family swim center, sports fields, a neighborhood Community Center with a meeting room and fully equipped fitness facility, a competitive Swim Center with regulation six-lane, 25-yard-long lap pool and a Clubhouse for residents’ private functions. Named for a resilient evergreen indigenous to the Texas prairie, Firethorne blends with the best nature has to offer: 150 acres devoted to parks and recreational amenities highlighted by a scenic 12-acre lake with surrounding greenbelt, hike and bike trails, parks and playgrounds, discovery-rich wildlife observation area, a natural bird habitat and more. Firethorne is situated 10 and 15 miles west, respectively, of the Texas Medical Center-West Campus and Houston’s Energy Corridor. Missouri City Fire Station 5

Missouri City Fire Station 5 begin serving southern portion of communities

O

n July 1, Missouri City Fire Station 5, located on Waters Lake Boulevard, will officially open its doors and begin serving the southern portion of Sienna Plantation. Officers and drivers for the new station will be sworn in on Thursday, June 25, at a special ceremony at the City Centre at Quail Valley, 2880 La Quinta Dr. “The opening of Fire Station 5 has been greatly anticipated by City Council, staff and Sienna residents who will be served by the new station. The hiring of new Fire and Rescue Services staff to man the station and drive fire and rescue vehicles will also alleviate the City’s other fire stations, benefiting residents across all districts,” Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen said. “The new fire station will now open thanks to the agreement the City made with Sienna Plantation Municipal Utility District No. 1 for its funding and future operations.” The new station is 7,848-square-feet and was designed to add a third bay in the future. The third bay can be used to house an ambulance or other resources depending on the resource needs of the area as the community reaches full build out. “While the interior of the station provides

18

the same functions as Fire Station 4, the layout is different to facilitate additional firefighters in the future, improve functionality of the facility and to provide a more open living area,” Fire and Rescue Services Chief Russell Sander said. “The exterior design is similar to the Sienna theme of the commercial development along Highway 6. The addition of the station will decrease response times in Sienna South by half, bringing it within national standards of five minutes and 20 seconds for the majority of the area.” Missouri City Council Members approved the contract between Missouri City and Sienna Plantation MUD No. 1 for Fire Station 5 at their Monday, March 2, 2015 meeting. A work group comprised of representatives from the City and Sienna Plantation Municipal Utility Districts met prior to the meeting to develop a contract based on the term sheet previously approved by all parties. The approved contract provides for the City’s recovery of the costs for interim utility costs incurred thus far, start-up expenditures, ongoing operational costs and capital costs. Under the contract, the District will also compensate the City for the actual costs of hiring, employing, equipping and training 12 new firefighters. June 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal

“The City has hired 12 firefighters to provide staffing for the facility. On May 4, 2015 new staff at the station began eight weeks of training. The staff is participating in physical drills, team exercises and extensive reviews of the principles of fire service as they prepare to become first responders in Missouri City,” Chief Sander said. “During this time, firefighters will be present at the station Monday through Thursday. Also, as part of the training program, a truck will be in the station for exercise evolutions. It is important to note that as they prepare for official duty, these firefighters will not be available to respond to emergency calls.” After the new employees are trained, the term sheet provides that the District will compensate the City on a per connection basis for the Fire Department’s budget, excluding the Fire Prevention Division. Each fiscal year, an actual budget of these expenses and a total connection count for the City will be prepared, and the City will bill the Sienna Master MUD monthly for each connection in Sienna Plantation outside of the city limits. Because the Master MUD has made certain capital investments in Fire Station 5, the future costs of certain capital items shall be billed directly to the Master MUD as the costs for such items are incurred by the City.

Planned Community Developers acquires prime Sugar Land property

P

lanned Community Developers has acquired a prized, five-acre lakefront site in Sugar Land for a Class A office building with structured parking and a planned 134room hotel. With the growing trend towards a walkable, highly amenitized live/work/ shop/play office environment, Lake Pointe One combines all of the key elements necessary to support today’s office user. “The unique combination of water frontage and amenities makes this a one-ofa-kind site in the Houston area,” says Don Janssen, principal of Planned Community Developers. “Keeping office buildings leased requires offering more than the typical office environment. Office users prefer a full complement of amenities within easy walking distance over a traditional suburban

office project.” The site is a five-minute walk to dining, shopping, residential and medical, including Whole Foods Market, 14 restaurants, Lifetime Fitness and 320 upscale town homes, patio homes and lifestyle garden homes. Noah’s event venue is located across the street for meetings, seminars, training and conferences. It also is a five-minute drive to First Colony Mall and Sugar Land Town Square, home to a 300-room Marriott hotel and conference center and more than 30 restaurants. Lake Pointe One, situated on Brooks Lake in close proximity to the U.S. 59 and Texas State Highway 6 intersection, is ideally suited as a corporate headquarters location. Located adjacent to the Fluor Corporation, Fort Bend County’s largest employer, the area is also home to the world

headquarters for The Minute Maid Company, CVR Energy and Noble Drilling. Other significant corporate offices include Sunoco, UBS, United Healthcare, Schlumberger, Nalco Champion and Texas Instruments. In addition to the location and amenities, Lake Pointe One offers water frontage with ornamental fountains and expansive lake views adjacent to miles of landscaped, lakefront walking trails connected to the Oyster Creek Rowing Center. “The setting is ideal for a companies that want to attract and retain today’s professional that is more concerned with environment and workplace wellness,” adds Don Janssen Planned Community Developers also developed the highly successful Sugar Land Town Square mixed-use development. Drees Custom Homes is increasing its presence — Augusta Pines & Long Meadow Farms communities

D

ebuting in Houston just nine months ago, Drees Custom Homes is increasing its presence in the region with the addition of two more communities, Augusta Pines and Long Meadow Farms, to the three announced previously. “We will be actively selling in five communities within a year of entering the Houston market,” said Jay McManus, Houston division president for Drees. “It’s an aggressive schedule, but there’s no reason not to be aggressive in such a strong market. We have an opportunity to showcase the diversity of Drees’ designs in different price points and home sizes.” The family-owned and operated builder is selling and has a model home under construction in the Retreat at Augusta Pines in Spring near The Woodlands, offering designs on 90-foot homesites priced from the $700,000s. Drees’ designs in the gated community range from 4,129 square feet to 5,216 square feet and offer four and five bedrooms. Some of the builder’s 34 properties are located along the Augusta Pines Golf Course. Presales begin next month in Long Meadow Farms, a 1,400-acre development in Richmond near the Westpark Tollway. Drees will offer homes priced from the $350,000s in the community, which boasts parks, tennis, swimming, a fitness center and trail system. Drees has a model home open in Woodtrace in Tomball and is offering eight home designs priced from the $520,000s with sizes ranging from 4,065 to 5,216 square feet. The master plan for the gated, wooded development includes five miles of wooded greenbelt trails; a recreation center with a pool and clubhouse; and a Central Park with a natural creek, footbridges and trails. A kayak launch and fishing dock on Woodtrace Lake gives residents more opportunities for outdoor recreation. Home sales also have begun in Harper’s Preserve in Conroe near The Woodlands Mall. Drees offers seven designs priced from the $480,000s in the gated community,

with home sizes ranging from 3,519 to 4,586 square feet. Model home construction begins soon. Finally, Drees will offer homes in two sections of Summer Lakes, a Rosenberg development just south of Highway 59 at FM 762. Homes will be priced from the $280,000s for both 60-foot and 70-foot properties. Presales are expected to begin in June. “We have definitely targeted north Houston and the Interstate 45 corridor primarily because of the ExxonMobil campus opening this year,” McManus said. “Plus, exposure in the west and southwest areas of Houston have allowed us to introduce a lower price point.” McManus said he sees the company continuing to grow in Houston, mirroring the success it has seen in other Texas markets, including Dallas and Austin. “In five years, I see us selling 500 homes annually and offering a diversified array of home styles that will serve a broad demographic,” he said. June 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal

Entering the Houston market also wasn’t as difficult as expected, McManus said. People moving from Austin and Dallas were already familiar with Drees, and McManus, who was already established within the Houston residential market when he joined the company last year, has managed to pull together a highly qualified team, he said. “Plus, the vendor trade has been very welcoming and we’ve been well-received by Realtors,” McManus said. For more information on Drees Custom Homes, visit www.dreeshomes.com. About Drees Homes Drees Homes, family-owned and operated for over 85 years, is ranked nationally as the ninth largest private homebuilder by Builder magazine. Headquartered in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky, Drees operates in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Nashville, Raleigh, Austin, Houston, Dallas, and Washington DC/Maryland/ Virginia. The company operates as “Drees Custom Homes” in Texas.

Leading in Quality and Performance Excellence Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital earns state’s top award for quality

Hospital employees celebrate being the first Houston-area hospital to earn the prestigious Texas Award for Performance Excellence (TAPE), the state’s highest award for quality.

“Winning this award is extremely difficult; we want it to mean something,” says Mac McGuire, Ph.D., CEO of QTF. “Memorial Hermann Sugar Land should be seen as a bright, shining light and a role model for other healthcare facilities in the state and nation.” 22

framework, and this award validates that we are on the right path and encourages us to press on.” “Winning this award is extremely difficult; we want it to mean something,” says Mac McGuire, Ph.D., CEO of QTF. “Memorial Hermann Sugar Land should be seen as a bright, shining light and a role model for other healthcare facilities in the state and nation.”

The Journey to Excellence

B

usiness organizations talk about driving excellence, but few reach elite levels for achieving it. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital is an exception. Hospital leaders are days away from formally accepting the prestigious Texas Award for Performance Excellence (TAPE), the state’s highest award for quality. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land will receive the award from the Quality Texas Foundation (QTF) during its annual conference later this month. QTF, a national leader in organizational improvement methods, uses an extensive evaluation process to award the TAPE. It includes hundreds of hours spent in onsite visits to provide improvement feedback and score award applicants based on the rigorous Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award Criteria for Performance Excellence. “Being the first Houston-area hospital to earn this honor is an important milestone for Memorial Hermann Sugar Land,” says CEO Greg Haralson, FACHE. “We are on a continuous journey to excellence utilizing the Baldrige

Since opening in its new location in 2006, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land has focused on continuous improvement. In 2011, the hospital took a major step forward in this endeavor when it began integrating the Baldrige framework into its operational model. With it came a bold vision to become the preeminent community hospital in the nation. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land’s five-member executive team drives the process of continuous

assessment and improvement in seven key areas defined by the Baldrige model: Leadership; Strategic Planning; Customer Focus; Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management; Workforce Focus; Operations Focus; and Results. Activities center around five strategic areas: Quality and Safety, People Excellence, Service and Satisfaction, Operations Excellence, and Growth. “Adding the Baldrige framework has always been about driving excellence and being a better organization,” says Memorial Hermann Sugar Land COO Malisha Patel, FACHE. Truven Health Analytics, an international business research firm, confirms a correlation between Baldrige criteria and excellence. It found healthcare organizations that have won or been in the review process for a Baldrige Award outperform other hospitals in nearly all the metrics it uses to choose its 100 Top Hospitals. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land has received the Top 100 honor three times in the small community hospital category. continues...

“Our core value is, and always will be, patient safety, so related metrics are extremely important,” says Patel. “At the end of the day, though, it’s our people – employees, physicians and volunteers – who are the foundation of what we do. It’s one thing to talk about a culture of excellence, but it requires discipline and a deep commitment from all areas of our organization to achieve it.” This discipline and commitment includes a robust improvement process that uses Lean Six Sigma principles and performance improvement tools such as Plan, Do, Check, Act (PDCA). It involves a cultural mindset where every employee strives for perfection to reach the highest levels of excellence. It’s why Memorial Hermann Sugar Land leaders, staff and physicians regularly compare hospital outcomes against goals set at 100 percent for quality performance and 0 percent for preventable harm. And it’s why stakeholders at all levels, from bedside to boardroom, are engaged in decision-making to attain ever-increasing levels of sustainable excellence.

24

Members of the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital Executive Team include Greg Haralson, FACHE, chief executive officer; Daisy Yeung, CPA, chief financial officer; Malisha Patel, FACHE, chief operating officer; Leslie S. Norman, M.P.H., B.S.N., RN, NEA-BC, FACHE, chief nursing officer; and not pictured, William B. Riley, Jr., M.D., chief medical officer.

Quality Indicators Commended by Examiners

M.H.S.M., the hospital’s senior project manager for performance excellence.

During the TAPE evaluation, QTF’s board of examiners highlighted many extraordinary metrics that validate Memorial Hermann Sugar Land’s strong dedication to quality and high performance. In the area of safety, the hospital holds an 11-year record of zero cases of ventilatorassociated pneumonia. This common complication affects upwards of 25 percent of patients who require intubation and mechanical ventilation. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land also holds a multi-year record of no level 1 or 2 Serious Safety Events. These levels measure preventable harm on a scale of 1 to 5, where the lowest numbers correlate with the most adverse outcomes. Examiners also commended Memorial Hermann Sugar Land for its dynamic culture of “Family Caring for Family” among its highly engaged, 500-member workforce. From employee survey response rates at an unprecedented 89 percent to national Press Ganey patient satisfaction scores among the top in the nation, stakeholder engagement and satisfaction scores speak for themselves. “It’s really rewarding to have our core competency of ‘Family Caring for Family’ validated because it impacts patient outcomes and so much more,” says Efrain Solis,

Cultivating Innovation As Memorial Hermann Sugar Land has pursued strategy-driven performance excellence using Baldrige, transformational thinking and innovation has followed. Stakeholders at all levels contribute ideas that support reducing inconvenience, process improvement, development, implementation, technology and partnership. Learning and knowledge-sharing abound. Family Forums engage employees, physicians and volunteers in strategic planning. A new Patient Family Advisory Council has strengthened community engagement as former patients and their families, community leaders and hospital volunteers provide valuable feedback on the hospital’s work. Ideas, Inspiration, Innovation – or I3 – draws from the work of Steven Johnson, author of “Where Good Ideas Come From.” This initiative encourages members of the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land family to submit ideas and creates environments where ideas can connect. Monthly inspiration sessions inspire employees to discuss ideas, which the hospital groups and tracks. “This is a way to transfer knowledge and have critical conversations on how to use new

June 2015 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal

ideas,” says Solis. “From these types of forums comes innovation. We want to make sure our family of partners is working on things that matter, which is ultimately that our patients, families and community are healthy.”

The Journey Continues As Memorial Hermann Sugar Land prepares to accept the TAPE on June 22 in Addison, Texas, its leaders lavishly praise the hard work and dedication of its family of caregivers and the support of the Fort Bend County community. They also know this award is just one step in the never-ending journey to excellence. “We’re beyond thrilled with this statewide honor, but our journey doesn’t end here,” says Haralson. “We will move forward toward becoming a national Malcolm Baldrige Award winner.”

Sugar Land Public-private partnerships continue to bring city recognition Nearly 14 years after the City of Sugar Land partnered to construct the Sugar Land Marriott Town Square, the hotel remains an industry leader and continues to bring the City recognition as a destination location. The 300-room Sugar Land Marriott Town Square has earned the honor as the top full-service Marriott in the state of Texas for overall guest satisfaction in 2014. Guests ranked the hotel in efficiency of checking in and out, cleanliness of the room and property, friendliness of staff, décor, and overall guest experience. The hotel is also ranked third in the United States and fifth

among 358 hotels worldwide in the same category. In 2001, the City entered into a development agreement to bring the hotelier to Sugar Land. The City funded the construction of the 26,500 square feet conference center and adjacent 600-space parking garage through a mix of funds restricted for economic development purposes and hotel occupancy taxes. Before opening in 2003, the City leased the facilities to the Marriott. The successful public-private partnership not only served as a catalyst for the development of the mixed-use Sugar Land Town

Square, it also provided a model for other unique projects in Sugar Land. Constellation Field, the Houston Museum of Natural Science at Sugar Land and the upcoming Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land have all benefited from similar financial arrangements first negotiated in the Marriott project. The recent accolades provide evidence that the Marriott was the ideal partner for the City of Sugar Land, which has an established history of partnering with industry leaders such as ACE Theatrical Group, the Houston Museum of Natural Science and SL Baseball.

critical trait to possess. To her, responsibility is taking care of what needs to be done, knowing that you are held accountable for it. She’ll take this trait into her future profession as a doctor. After volunteering at two hospitals over the summer and being exposed to the profession she feels that being a doctor is her lifetime goal. She plans to start by studying nursing at the University of Texas – Austin. ANNIE SAMUEL L.V. Hightower High School Your doctor is the one that sees you in the most delicate of times…birth, pain, and death. Watching her grandmother writhe in pain from her weak bones was enough for Annie to decide that she didn’t want anyone else to suffer the way she did. Annie is a student at Hightower High School Medical Science Academy. Being accepted into this program, she has learned more about medicine and the different careers in the medical field and now plans to become a physician by beginning her studies at Brown University. SARAH ABRASH Clements High School Sarah aims to solve problems by becoming a chemical engineer. She is passionate about chemistry and enjoys discovering the outcomes of reactions in different molecules. Sarah is active in the National History Honor Society as well as the National Spanish Honor Society, where she often helps solve organizational problems. She’ll use the support and motivation her mother provides her to excel at Rice University. “The RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program provides all high school seniors in participating markets who wish to continue their education the opportunity to apply for a scholarship and receive financial assistance to attend college,” said Matthew Kades MOAGH president. “It is our goal to help make the dream of a college education a reality for students who may not otherwise attend college.”

FBISD starts construction of school in Riverstone

T

he Fort Bend Independent School District has started construction on Anne McCormick Sullivan Elementary in Riverstone, the community’s first on-site school. The two-story facility, at 17828 Winding Waters Lane, is designed for 1,200 students and is expected to open in 2016. The 150,576-square-foot campus will be built to the exacting standards of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) program, which recognizes best-in-class green building strategies and practices. When the school opens, it will be the second school in the Fort Bend ISD that will be LEED-certified. The estimated project cost is $42.9 million, which includes furniture, fixtures and equipment. “This will be a state-of-the-art school from the inside out,” said Trey Reichert, vice president and general manager of Riverstone. “We are excited to see it taking shape in the

community.” The school is named for Anne Sullivan, a Dulles High School graduate and Houston firefighter who died in the line of duty on May 31, 2013, when a burning building collapsed, killing her and three of her comrades. “Ms. Sullivan’s deep ties to Fort Bend ISD, her drive and determination to succeed despite learning and speech disabilities identified early in life, and her bravery in the line of duty will be revered for generations to come,” said Dr. Christie Whitbeck, Fort Bend ISD’s deputy

superintendent. Donna Whisonant, current principal of Austin Parkway Elementary and 27-year district employee, has been named principal of Anne McCormick Sullivan Elementary. Riverstone students currently attend Austin Parkway Elementary, Commonwealth Elementary, Settlers Way Elementary, First Colony Middle School, Fort Settlement Middle School and Elkins High School. For more information on Riverstone, visit www.riverstone.com.
