Super medicine for super athletes

T

o most people these days, the name IRONMAN brings to mind a red and gold superhero in a flying metal suit.

For some it may bring to mind a triathlon, the epitome of human physical endurance.

Either way, when you mention IRONMAN, it means one thing – strength.

When the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute opened at the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital campus it brought the muscle to help the iron men and women of Fort Bend County mend from their sports injuries, rehabilitate their bodies and condition themselves for peak performance.

What if Your Financial Advisor is Wrong?

HCC breaks ground on Missouri City campus

O

fficials with Houston Community College, Missouri City and others in the region gathered May 4 at City Hall for a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony for the new college campus going up on the lot next door.

The $21.5 million, 67,000-square-foot facility will be known as the Missouri City Center for Entrepreneurship, Technology and Health and should be completed next April with classes starting in the fall of 2017.

“Moving this campus from Sienna Plantation to Texas Parkway could not have come at a better time,” said Madeline Burillo, HCC Southwest College President. “This city and population are growing and has recently been ranked as one of America’s 50 best cities in which to live.”

She praised the growth and diversity of the community in the college’s decision to relocate the campus.

“It has a diverse mix of professional, technical, skilled and unskilled labor all that are relocating to Missouri City and Fort Bend County. This provides HCC with a great opportunity to get aligned with the needs of the companies and to train students to work in these jobs that are in high demand in our community,” she said.

HCC Chancellor Cesar Maldonado also played on the diversity theme in his remarks, observing a poster of a bridge span on his office wall with the caption, “Together we are stronger.”

“The diversity of this community brings to Texas, to the area around here, with Fort Bend County being the fastest-growing county in the country, our partnership with City of Missouri City, its leaders, and Fort Bend County and its leaders, together we are stronger. That message is clear today,” he said.

Addressing one of the criticisms of the project, Maldonado said the new campus will compliment, not detract, from the HCC campus a short distance away in Stafford.

“We have up the road here another campus in Stafford that’s vibrant and growing and this campus here is going to compliment that campus,” he said. “There’s going to be a focus here that’s different from our Stafford campus. Together we are stronger.

“We’ll be focused on entrepreneurship, as you’ve already heard, on technology, on

healthcare and that ever-growing public safety and healthcare arena where there’s a continual demand for new technology or customer service or high responsiveness from law enforcement from public life safety. Those areas are going to be areas that we’re going to bring instruction to in this community,” he said.

Maldonado said building partnerships will be vital to the success of the new campus.

“Together we’re stronger partnering with other areas and other campuses at Houston Community College. Our Coleman College is the headquarters is the center of excellence in health science, but it doesn’t live on an island. It interacts with the entire system of Houston Community College. And we will have a strong presence here in healthcare, supported by Coleman College and all the other colleges in the Houston Community College system.

“We’re working with universities to have them present here as well. We’re working with the county and city library services, on transportation to make this a vibrant fastgrowing campus to be able to meet the needs and requirements of this community and in fact of the entire Houston Community College system,” he said.

HCC Board of Trustees Chair Adriana Tamez said the new campus will open doors in the community.

“We are going to make more opportunities for the future, for the future workforce, whether that be that HCC and this particular partnership and all of our facilities prepare students for four-year university, for two-year associates degree, for certification, whatever it may be it’s about the June 2016 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal

future, so today is a very important day and we’re very excited to have a bigger presence here in Fort Bend County,” she said.

HCC Trustee Neeta Sane said it is important for the college and the community to work together.

“Our focus and priorities are to make sure we align our education program with the regional needs,” she said. “We are making sure that we fill the skills gap in the job market.”

Missouri City Mayor Allen Owen pointed out the strategic partnerships that were formed to make the campus move deal come together.

“By moving the campus here the people in Sienna and that area get a county annex, which they’ve needed for a long time, and we end up with a library over here that’s going to be three stories. It’s a great improvement to the entire area. That’s what this campus is bringing to the Texas Parkway,” he said.

“This is a $30 million investment that’s going to grow even better as things happen.”

Owen is in talks with METRO to create a bus route that will stop in front of the new campus.

“Now that HCC campus is here, I feel it is important to get them involved and provide bus service to the campus,” said Owen.

According to Burillo, the new building will be energy efficient, constructed with sustainable methods and will meet LEED Silver Certification requirements which is one of the highest international construction standards focused on preserving the environment and maintaining energy efficient practices.

What is a Buy-Sell Agreement and Why Do You Need One?

A

s a business owner, you may have heard of or even signed a legal document containing buy-sell provisions, often referred to as a “buy-sell agreement.” A buy-sell agreement is an agreement among business partners that sets forth certain rights and obligations with respect to the ownership of the entity T. Aarron Dobbs upon the occurrence of certain events.

Here are four reasons why you need a buy-sell agreement: 1. Death: A buy-sell agreement can dictate who has the right to purchase the deceased owner’s share and at what value, and may provide that the surviving owners have the right to purchase such share before being sold to an outsider.

2. Incapacity: If a business owner becomes incapacitated and unable to continue participation in the entity, a buy-sell agreement can provide for who determines whether a person is “incapacitated” and how an incapacitated owner’s interest will be controlled.

3. Divorce: In Texas, a business owner’s spouse may have

acquired a community property interest in the entity. A buy-sell agreement can help protect a business by providing that, upon a divorce, an owner has the right to purchase such community property interest of the other spouse.

4. Retirement: A buy-sell agreement can structure the buyout of a retiring owner’s share in order to provide for a revenue stream during retirement.

There are many other reasons why a buy-sell agreement may be necessary for your business, and there are many Casson Wen options for structuring the acquisition of a business partner’s interest. It is a good idea to have your entity’s governing documents reviewed to see if buy-sell provisions are included, or if revisions are necessary to incorporate additional contingencies aimed at protecting your business.

Houston Texans help HCC veteran students with educational goals

T

he Houston Texans are putting Houston Community College (HCC) veteran students in great field position for educational

success.

During the April meeting of the HCC Board of Trustees, Texans President Jamey Rootes presented the HCC Foundation with a check for $56,275 to support the Houston Texans Scholarship for Service for veteran students and their dependents.

“No one in Texas educates more veterans

than HCC,” said Rootes. “We are proud to be your teammate for Houston and look forward to building upon our success to maintain a great, well-educated workforce to fill those great jobs we are creating in our community for many years to come.”

The generous gift from the Texans will help 19 veteran students for the 2015-2016 academic year, including Randy Presley, who is currently in the associate degree nursing program at Coleman College for Health Sciences.

The Houston Texans have demonstrated a longstanding partnership with HCC and have generously donated more than $160,000 to the HCC Foundation for scholarships to date. HCC is the only community college in the nation that is an educational partner with an NFL team.

“This valuable ongoing scholarship support from the Texans recognizes our veterans’ service on the front lines by providing scholarships to help support their education and skills training in the classroom,” said Dr. Adriana Tamez, HCC Board of Trustees chair.

Shawn Taylor, president of the HCC Foundation Board, expressed his appreciation for the Texans’ longstanding support of student success at HCC. “The money presented today will go really far with our program for veterans and workforce,” said Taylor. “It’s a tremendous investment in the individuals who are enrolled in the various programs at Houston Community College.”

The 2015-2016 scholarship recipients will be recognized at a ceremony for veteran graduates at NRG Stadium in May. “We are not just benefitting the students themselves, we are benefitting their families,” said Dr. Cephas Archie, interim director, HCC Veterans Affairs and Student Support Services. “These opportunities and resources that are afforded to us are critical to the success of such a sensitive population. Sugar Land strengthens economic incentive programs

ugar Land City Council and the Sugar Land Development Corporation (SLDC) recently increased minimum requirements for tax abatements and direct incentives used to attract targeted businesses.

The effort was intended to ensure Sugar Land remains a leading location for primary employment and corporate headquarters.

“Our focused but aggressive economic development tools have played an important role in our economic success,” said Sugar Land City Manager Allen Bogard. “Actions taken to strengthen requirements for business incentives will continue to play a pivotal role in attracting capital investment and new jobs to the City of Sugar Land. This ensures a strong economy that helps pay for the quality services our residents expect and supports one of the lowest tax rates in the state.”

It has been more than 10 years since substantial policy changes were made to the minimum requirements in the City’s tax abatement guidelines and the SLDC’s direct Allen Borgard incentive policy. The following changes were made to strengthen minimum requirements for incentives and solidify Sugar Land’s position as a regional employment center and corporate headquarters destination.

The minimum capital investment requirements were increased in both policies, with the addition of a stronger, tiered structure to provide guidance for the percentage of abatement offered in the tax abatement guidelines.

The minimum number of jobs and average salary requirements were increased in the SLDC incentive policy.

A minimum amount of leased square footage was added to the SLDC incentive policy.

Changes to the targeted industry list were made in both policies to be more consistent with the city’s strategic plan and current practice.

To encourage economic growth, three primary business incentive tools are used to encourage business investment. Each has its own unique purpose and role in supporting economic development in Sugar Land: Value-added tax abatements focus on attracting capital investment and property tax value through real and personal property, as well as inventory, which is not eligible for abatement. The city does not lose anything through value-added tax abatements, as the development would not have occurred without the abatement. Such projects result in significant property tax value and revenue to the city after the abatement expires, and economic growth generated by these agreements fully benefits the local school districts, as school districts

Sugar Land Compounding Pharmacy specializes in custom medications, personal service

S

ugar Land Compounding Pharmacy is unique in the local pharmaceutical community in that they make custom medications and they deliver for free.

When Shahid JakiUddin founded the pharmacy in 2012, he filled a niche that most commercial pharmacies were not meeting.

“We have free delivery to homes to people who cannot come, such as people in assisted living and group homes,” he said.

Free delivery to anyone is just a part of the customer service provided by Sugar Land Compounding Pharmacy.

JakiUddin takes great pride in his oneon-one interaction with his customers and learning their pharmaceutical needs.

He is also able to custom make drugs, hence the compounding part of the company name.

“We customize the medication,” he said, noting that the ingredients are mixed from scratch to provide an exact dosage.

JakiUddin said he provides the standard medications that big box store pharmacies provide. It’s his ability to customize medications for patients needing treatment for thyroid, hormone, cancer, scars and pain issues that make his company stand out.

“We are an alternative to narcotics,” he said. “Doctors are more leaning to this way.”

JakiUddin is a native of Bangladesh who came to the United States in 1992.

“I wanted to be a doctor,” he said.

The cost of education to become a doctor wasn’t in his budget, but he could afford to study pharmacology and earned

his degree from Texas Southern University.

“This is the closest thing I can be to helping people in this field,” he said.

He started his career with Walmart and Sam’s Club. He worked his way up to district manager and then four years ago made the leap to open his own business.

He opened shop in a medical plaza along Hwy. 59 and has watched his business steadily grow over the last four years.

“We’re surrounded by all these doctors. I’m the go-to guy for these doctors,” he said.

Most of his customers come to him, but when they can’t, he goes to them. His company delivers all over the Houston metro area, going as far out as places like Waller, Richmond and Wallis.

“We accept insurances and we give the best prices in town,” JakiUddin said.

He makes customer service a priority, doing his best to get to know the people, their needs and their doctors. Because of that, Sugar Land Compounding Pharmacy is not only able to better meet the needs and budget of its customers; they can also help keep an eye out for misuse of medications and prescription painkiller abuse.

“If they come to us we can easily stop them,” he said.

The family-owned business is small with five employees. JakiUddin is the pharmacist and his wife Sadia manages the books.

“My wife is always the boss,” he said.

Comerica Bank receives Cornerstone Award

T

he Texas Bankers Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Texas Bankers Association, presented a Cornerstone Award to Dallas-based Comerica Bank for its Reinvesting in Lockwood campaign.

David B. Terry, senior vice president, North Texas division manager, middle market, accepted the award today at the Texas Bankers Association’s 132nd Annual Convention held in Grapevine.

To commemorate the opening of a new Lockwood banking center and Comerica Bank’s 20th year of operation in Houston’s culturally rich but economically poor Fifth Ward, Comerica Bank pledged $20,000 in community grants to five Houston Independent School District schools in the Lockwood area as voted on by the community.

Pugh Elementary School was the big

winner with $10,000 for its proposal to put a tablet in every one of its classrooms.

Wheatley High School received the second-place award of $4,000 to invest in spirit incentives and instructional improvements. McReynolds Middle School took home $2,500, Atherton Elementary School won $2,000 and N.Q. Henderson Elementary School won $1,500.

This is the 14th year the Texas Bankers Foundation has recognized Texas banks for their outstanding community involvement through the Cornerstone Award competition. Projects have included neighborhood and housing development, small business and industrial development, main street revitalization, community celebrations and support of music or theater programs.

Serving Texas bankers since 1885, the Texas Bankers Association is the largest and oldest state bankers association in the nation.

Surrounded by some of her students, Culinary Instructor of the Stafford College & Career Center, Chef Courtney Ralls, wraps up the work of La Sparta Café, which opened this year with the help of high school students that have aspiring ambitions for careers in the food and restaurant industry. Last week Ralls was commended for the profitable and effective success of the campus restaurant during the Senior 55 + breakfast attended by area residents.

She was also presented with a cake by the Elks Club of Stafford, a recent client of the culinary students’ program, which catered its annual installation dinner. Both the high school’s lunch café and senior breakfasts will resume in the fall.

Fort Bend County ranks No. 3 for purchasing power in Texas

A

resident’s money goes far in Fort Bend County, which is evident from the results of a SmartAsset study.

SmartAsset, a New York financial technology company, recently looked at the cost of living from various places in the United States, and Fort Bend County ranked in the top three within Texas.

With a purchasing index of 96.16, Fort Bend proves it is an affordable place to live, meaning a resident’s standard of living can be maintained in the county. SmartAsset aggregated data using a cost of living calculator, which evaluated living expenses, housing, food, education, childcare, transportation and health care costs, and taxes.

SmartAsset then compared median income to the cost of living data nationwide to find the counties where people hold the most purchasing power. In comparison to all other Greater Houston regional counties, Fort Bend County ranked at the top with regard to purchasing power. Fort Bend County ranked No. 3 in the state and No. 7 nationally.

“The SmartAsset report measures purchasing power of counties and is a reflection of income relative to the cost of living,” said Jeff Wiley, president and CEO of the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council. “For those who chose Fort Bend County to locate a business or buy a home, the report is positive confirmation of what they already know – Fort Bend County is Greater Houston’s finest address. For those currently looking to locate a business or family, it should be compelling evidence that ‘The closer you look, the better we get.’”

Median income is another area in which Fort Bend County is number one within the Greater Houston area. Fort Bend County ranked No. 2 in the state and No. 36 in the U.S in median income. The cost of living numbers were combined using a weighted average based on how close the county’s median income was to the minimal livable income in that area. According to SmartAsset, the median income in Fort Bend County is $86,407 whereas the cost of living is $43,255.

Fort Bend County consistently serves as a leader in various economic metrics. The county continues to boast a favorable business climate, business development growth, infrastructure, and a diversity of industries. These factors make Fort Bend County profitable and provide residents with the means to live comfortably.

Performance-based direct incentives are provided by the SLDC, a special economic development corporation approved by Sugar Land voters in 1993. Funded by a voterapproved .25-cent sales tax, the SLDC supports the retention and recruitment of primary employment projects such as Schlumberger, First Data, Nalco Champion, Applied Optoelectronics and Minute Maid. It is important to note that the estimated total direct and indirect benefits of any project receiving an incentive from SLDC must exceed the total direct incentives offered.

Third, Sugar Land’s City Council may choose to enter into sales-tax sharing agreements with companies that generate significant new sales tax within the city of Sugar Land. Since these are new dollars created within Sugar Land, the city loses nothing by sharing the funds and creates new revenue streams for the city.

local business owner says she found her passion by chance in the baking industry, and it has sweet rewards.

The Central Fort Bend Chamber along with community members, elected officials and business owners welcomed Cupcake and a Smile, LLC with a ribbon cutting ceremony April 14 at the bakery’s new store located at 1410 East Highway 90-A #400 in Richmond.

Sharndell Aitch says she did not know she wanted to be a baker until later in life.

She had surgery several years ago and started baking when she was at home.

“I liked it, I gave it to my friends and they liked it. Then I got a food truck. It happened by accident. I didn’t go out and say I’m going to be a baker. Sometimes God puts you where you need to be,” Aitch said.

She ran the food truck for two years before she decided it was time to open a store.

“I was asked where I was located over and over. When I was laid off last March, it gave me the opportunity to decide if I wanted to go back to corporate America, or take this step,” Aitch said.

She took that big step and now is busy running the store Tuesday through Saturday with a good following of customers.

Cupcake and a Smile offers cupcakes and other sweets from the bakery, but is also available for events. Aitch provides cupcakes

for special events, custom orders and uses her food truck for events. Aitch says this business endeavor is a sweet treat for her, and hopes to grow with the Chamber.

n honor of Star Wars Day, which is celebrated by Star Wars enthusiasts around the world on May 4, characters from the popular film saga visited patients at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital on Wednesday morning.

The kids were able to interact with some of their favorite characters from the movies by posing for pictures and seeing the lightsabers up close. The visiting group was made up of members from the 501st Legion, a worldwide Star Wars fan club that celebrates the Star Wars universe using costumes and props, in particular those of the Stormtroopers, Imperial forces, other various “bad guy” characters and, of course, Darth Vader.

May 4 is marked as Star Wars Day due to the popularity of the catchphrase, “May the Force be with you,” which fans alter to, “May the fourth be with you.” Fans celebrate by dressing as their favorite characters, hosting movie marathons and more.

“Some of our patients are big fans of the movies, so a visit like this means a lot to them,” said Alyssa Luksa, manager of Child Life and Expressive Therapies at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. “We are extremely thankful to the 501st Legion for taking the time to come spread some joy to our patients. The force is certainly strong in them.”

Missouri City doctor hosts baby in need of heart surgery

D

r. John Breinholt is used to going to underprivileged areas of Central and South America on medical mission trips.

Last March, the mission came to him.

The Missouri City doctor and his family opened up their home to a 10-month-old Venezuelan boy and his mother who came to Houston for life-saving heart surgery at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital.

“If he had not come he probably would have died within the next five months,” Breinholt said of Juan Escalante. “Now there is no reason he won’t live a normal life.”

Juan and his mother, Milagros Escobar, were guests with the Breinholts through a nonprofit organization called HeartGift. The program provides lifesaving heart surgery to children from around the world where specialized medical treatment is either scarce or nonexistent.

“The generosity of the Houston community to provide the partnerships which made this surgery a reality for Juan are truly a blessing,” said Executive Director Rachael Wright.

Breinholt is the chief of pediatric cardiology at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital and McGovern Medical School at UTHealth.

Mother and son arrived in Houston from Valencia, Venezuela, on March 19 and spent four weeks as guests of the Breinholts in their Missouri City home.

“When we brought him into our home, I wasn’t entirely prepared for how scrawny he was,” Breinholt said. “He was very underweight.”

Even though Juan was well fed, his heart condition hindered his growth.

“He was 10 months old but he was wearing three-month-old clothing,” Breinholt said. “He wasn’t rolling over, he wasn’t sitting up at all and he was not holding a bottle.”

In the month he was here, Juan gained three pounds, started sitting up and now holds a bottle.

“He said ma-ma for the first time,” Breinholt said.

He said HeartGift pairs patients with families with people who speak their native language. Breinholt speaks Spanish and his daughters are taking it in school, so they could communicate a little bit. Breinholt said he lived for a while in Argentina and has been on numerous medical mission trips.

“Medical mission work is something I’m passionate about,” he said.

His wife Diana has joined him before but his four children haven’t had the experience yet.

“It was a great introduction for the kids to see something I do,” he said.

Escobar stayed with her son at the hospital for the week and a half he was there for the surgery and recovery. That was convenient for them and Breinholt, who works there.

“I got to see him quite a bit,” he said.

Once he was discharged, Juan and Escobar stayed two more weeks with the Breinholts. In that short time the two families formed a close bond. Breinholt said it was beneficial for his children to have the experience.

“You sometimes need to see kids like this,” he said.

Diana Breinholt took Escobar on a shopping trip just before they were scheduled to depart back to Venezuela.

“My wife took her shopping and got her a ton of stuff that she couldn’t get in Venezuela,” he said.

The departure of mother and son at Bush Intercontinental Airport was not an easy one.

“Tears were shed by my children and wife when they left,” he said.

Breinholt said Juan was making a rapid recovery but still has a ways to go.

“His prognosis is much, much better than when he started. There are some changes that need to be made that will take time,” he said.

He continues to stay in touch with the family and will follow Juan’s recovery.

Although this is the first time the Breinholts have taken in a HeartGift child, it probably won’t be the last.

“People need to realize it’s not a big deal.

If you have a spare bedroom you can do this,” he said.

It’s likely that he will soon have another opportunity to host a child in need of heart surgery. Children’s Memorial Herman Hospital takes in six HeartGift children each year.

“It really was not a burden. It was a lot of fun,” he said.

he Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute in Sugar Land is home to comprehensive sports medicine health care to help athletes stay in the game and perform at their highest levels. TRAINING MORE EFFICIENTLY Athletes in field sports benefit from the VO2 max test that determines peak oxygen usage and helps set heart rate zones. For runners and endurance athletes, the lactate threshold test uses a scientific approach to set pace and heart rate zones for improved training and competition.

A basic biomechanical test can aid athletes in improving the mechanics of their sport. This test captures imbalances in walking, jumping, running, throwing and swinging patterns via video technology, showing movements from all sides. By examining the video frame by frame, sports biomechanists target weaknesses that can lead to injury or that are causing pain.

In a gait analysis, for example, patients are videotaped while running on a treadmill. Often, the source of an injury is different from the site of the pain.

Memorial Hermann Mischer Neuroscience Institute and UTHealth welcome Dr. Joseph Martinez Medical School’s Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery. “The addition of Dr. Martinez greatly enhances our elective spine surgery and spine trauma divisions and supports our goal to continuously evolve and learn, providing our patients with the best possible neurological care.”

Dr. Martinez is the co-author of articles published in the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine and chapters on anterior lumbar interbody fusion and lumbar disk arthroplasty in the textbook Essential Techniques of Operative Surgery.

Dr. Martinez completed his residency in neurosurgery at Baylor College of Medicine and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, and later served as a fellow in complex spine surgery at the University of Miami. In 2001, he was awarded the William J. von Liebig Research Fellowship in Vascular Surgery at Harvard Medical School and has been listed among Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

Dr. Martinez is a neurosurgeon who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of spine disorders. He has a special interest in the treatment of degenerative disc disease, disc herniation, sciatica, radiculopathy, spinal stenosis, spinal cord compression and myelopathy, and metastatic spine tumors.
