Helping mothers and babies in need
O
ne of the biggest and most stinging criticisms of the prolife movement is that it does nothing to support mothers and families who choose to bring a new life into this world. Welcome to the solution. Our cover story this month is about Rainbow of Love, an organization that provides support for disadvantaged women who choose to have their baby. Debbie Richards founded the organization in 2002 to help mothers who simply could not afford to care for their infants and toddlers. Two years later Rainbow of Love was certified as a licensed adoption agency. Although adoptions are central to what the organization does, Rainbow of Love is known for so much more. They collect donations of new items for babies, including car seats, strollers, cribs and the like and give them to mothers who otherwise could not afford them. They provide parenting classes and help the mothers with urgent needs like rent assistance, diapers and some basic counseling. As an adoption agency, they provide services for the birth mother and the adoptive parents. Richards became motivated to do something
when, as an employee of Child Protective Services, she saw numerous mothers living in poverty struggling to care for their babies. As she said, poverty is not a crime. Yet too often the system fails and the mothers and the babies are the ones that suffer. Four times a year Rainbow of Love provides care packages for the clients. The babies are given needed items at Christmas and Easter and the mothers are pampered for Mother’s Day. In the fall, they are given a diaper bag with all the essentials for the youngsters going to daycare or preschool. This really is a remarkable organization with a high and noble calling. Like any nonprofit organization, it is always in need of donations and volunteers. Information on how to help can be found with the story. You can also visit www.rainbowoflove.org to learn more. I hope you will take a few minutes to learn more about this amazing agency and if it touches your heart, that you will reach out to help. Sincerely, Joe Southern Editor, Fort Bend/Katy Business Journal

Superior Tank breaks ground for Rosenberg expansion
S
uperior Tank Co., Inc. is expanding and bringing more business and industry to Central Fort Bend County. The company was well received by business owners and elected officials at a ribbon cutting ceremony held at the current facility located at 1700 Bamore Road in Rosenberg and also celebrated a groundbreaking for a new manufacturing and powder coating facility on site. James Marquez owns the international company and expects the growth to help the local economy in the near future. “This is a culmination of a dream my dad had in 1997. This will be a new manufacturing facility to expand our market share. This will allow us to go up through the Midwest and on to the East Coast. Twenty years ago we started this, and now the future is bright and we are excited to see what will come,” Marquez said. He said the new facility should open this summer and will bring 150 jobs to the area. “It is often said a company is only as good as its employees. Well, we must be darn good, because we couldn’t have asked for a

better division manager, as we have in Huel Loden, along with his small staff that have successfully built over $100 million in tanks over the last nearly 20 years. Thank you Huel, Sandy and your entire staff for making us true believers that the future of Superior Tank will undoubtedly run through Texas.” Superior Tank Co., Inc. manufactures and installs a variety of storage tanks and component parts for many industries. The company began in 1984 and has locations in California, Texas, Hawaii, Mexico, and Vietnam. The move of the manufacturing facilities to Rosenberg was an effort between Superior Tank Co., Inc., the Rosenberg Development Corporation and the Greater Fort Bend Economic Development Council. “It’s exciting to see businesses expand here in Rosenberg, and to recognize the tremendous opportunity here,” said Mayor Cynthia A. McConathy. “The Bamore industrial business area is really coming to life and I’m so happy to see another great company move in and join our growing community. It is a great testament to all that we have to offer.” For more information about Superior Tank Co., visit www.superiortank.com.

The 2,916 square-foot Urgent Care opened in April offers Sugar Land and area residents the ease and convenience of extended medical care and serves as an extension of a primary care physician’s office. The addition means the Sugar Land area will be served by every level of care offered by Memorial Hermann. “We’re committed to providing the appropriate level of safe, high quality care to our growing community,” says Greg Haralson, senior vice president and CEO, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. “Memorial Hermann Urgent Care in Telfair will provide another level of care and serve as a convenient, affordable entry point to the full array of services offered by Memorial Hermann.” Memorial Hermann Urgent Care will provide walk-in care for non-life-threatening health conditions. No appointments are necessary. The new clinic will be staffed with board-certified family medicine physicians from the Memorial Hermann Medical Group (MHMG). “Time has become a huge commodity and we want to bring high quality healthcare directly to the consumer in a more convenient way,” says Dr. David James, senior vice president and CEO, Memorial Hermann Medical Group. “Our community is growing and our healthcare needs are changing. We’re committed to meeting those changes in the communities we serve.” The Urgent Care will be staffed by Eugenio Bacani, M.D. and Anju Chacko, M.D., both are MHMG board-certified family medicine physicians. To help ensure integrated comprehensive care, those patients will have their visit placed in their electronic health record for easy review during any follow-up appointments with their primary care physician or care at any other Memorial Hermann location. Memorial Hermann Urgent Care in Telfair will open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week for walk in access. The Urgent Care will be located at 1227 Museum Square Drive, Suite A, Sugar Land, in an area known as Museum Square at Telfair.
Where’s Your Miracle?
M
any investors today are looking for a “miracle” investment. But, for many, unless they are independently wealthy, there aren’t many “miracles” out there. And, the funny thing is that when something does seem good, people tend to think it’s “too good to be true”. You can imagine how this creates a catch 22 for advisors trying to steer their clients to do what’s in the clients’ best interest. Part of the problem is that today’s client is cynical (and, not without good reason) and the other part of the problem is that you usually aren’t talking to a fiduciary or holistic advisor who has unlimited options to offer you. Too often, investors fall into a trap of being offered what’s available through that particular advisor and or broker, instead of what’s truly the best option for them. If you are planning for retirement or saving for retirement, you really want to find an independent retirement income
planner — they will be able to guide you to the options that are best for you and your retirement. Ask if they are a fiduciary. If so and if they are aware of something better for you than what they offer, or April R. Roberts, J.D. if your current investments are better than what they offer, they will be obliged to tell you this information. We know it can be hard to steer through all of that information out there, but some good questions to ask are: Can you explain all of the fees and costs associated with this investment/plan (both those stated and unstated)? How does this investment/plan fit into
my goals for retirement? Can I lose principal in this investment? Can you give me a written retirement income plan? Are you a fiduciary? What are the tax consequences of this plan/investment? If I pass away, will my family receive all of the remaining assets in this plan? It always helps to educate yourself, but at the end of the day you want to choose a retirement income planner who is right for you and your family. When you find the right partner, you can rely on their expertise and experience. The best way to do this? Trust your gut!! If you have any further questions or would like to come in for a complimentary second opinion on your current plan, feel free to give us a call at the office or visit our website — you’ll be glad you did!

Physician, patient team honored for raising awareness about juvenile arthritis
T
he local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation recently honored Ankur Kamdar, M.D., McGovern Medical School pediatric rheumatologist affiliated with Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital, for raising awareness about a silent disease and working to bolster interest in an underrepresented specialty. Dr. Kamdar was named the foundation’s 2016 Medical Honoree at the 10th Annual Joints in Action Golf Tournament on March 24, a fundraising event that celebrates patients with arthritis who continue to enjoy active lives after joint replacement. The foundation also honored his patient, 12-year-old Allie Guerino, who was named the 2016 Youth Honoree. Proceeds from the event help support the foundation’s mission to conquer arthritis
through information and resources, access to health care, advancements in science and community connections. “People have the misperception that arthritis is an old person’s disease, but it can affect all age ranges,” Dr. Kamdar said. “Many people have never even heard of juvenile arthritis, but the young people who suffer from it are forced to deal with a lot at an early age. While most kids are able to live a fulfilling life, and even continue to play competitive sports, in some cases, they have to take infusions and shots and medications every day, just to be able to move.” Allie was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis at 9 years old after suffering with extreme swelling in her joints. Her family was told that, because of the shortage of pediatric rheumatologists, it could take up to three months to get an appointment. But Allie’s father sent an

email to the colleagues at his law firm, and one recommended Dr. Kamdar, who was able to see Allie within a week, helping ease her parents’ anxiety about the diagnosis. “Dr. Kamdar cares so much about each and every patient,” Allie’s mother, Sallie Guerino said. “He gives so much time and attention to them and he has this huge heart. It’s obvious that he loves this line of work. He gives it his all.” Thanks to a specialized treatment regimen prescribed by Dr. Kamdar, Allie, now in sixth grade, continues to lead an active lifestyle. She’s a key contributor on her basketball team and loves playing field hockey and softball at St. Francis Episcopal Day School. “I hope to raise awareness that kids get arthritis and it makes a big impact on their lives,” she said. Dr. Kamdar, who has been actively involved in the foundation since 2007, has been a leader in trying to encourage more aspiring doctors to consider a career in pediatric rheumatology. Dr. Kamdar first recognized the shortage during his pediatric training, noting that there were not enough doctors to see the number of children diagnosed each year with juvenile arthritis. Dr. Kamdar is now the associate program director of the general pediatrics residency program at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth, and has worked diligently to educate future doctors and health professionals in all levels of training so that they are better equipped to care for patients of all ages suffering with rheumatic disease. Arthritis, the leading cause of disability in the United States, afflicts one in every five adults and one in every 250 children, according to the Arthritis Foundation. Children with arthritis can struggle with eye inflammation and growth problems. The chronic disease can also cause their bones and joints to grow unevenly. The disease can be diagnosed in infants as young as 1-year-old, requiring lifelong medical treatment, but the risks increase with age, with nearly half of adults over the age of 65 suffering from arthritis.
What is Estate Planning and Why Do You Need It? By T. Aaron Dobbs
E
state Planning is necessary for the orderly and efficient administration and transfer of your property upon your incapacity or death. An estate plan can be designed to discourage litigation about the distribution of your estate, to protect an inheritance from falling into the wrong hands, such as a beneficiary’s creditors or during a divorce, and to preserve a beneficiary’s governmental benefits. Having a last will and testament isn’t enough. Your estate plan needs to be a comprehensive plan which takes
into consideration the particular types of property that you own, including business interests, your family dynamics, and whether your beneficiaries have special needs. An estate plan should coordinate assets that may not pass through your will, such as life insurance or other assets naming a beneficiary. Otherwise, the estate could be used for purposes that the individual did not desire. T. Aaron Dobbs is board certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and focuses his law practice on estate planning, probate and trust law from the Fort Bend office of Roberts Markel Weinberg Butler Hailey PC.

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Cancer Survivors Day Celebration 2015
H
ouston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Cancer Center celebrates National Cancer Survivors Day on
June 3. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is joining nearly 14.5 million American cancer survivors in celebrating the 29th Annual National Cancer Survivors Day this year. Also being recognized are the many family members, friends and health care providers whose contributions to, and support of, cancer survivors help make the celebration possible. “Surviving cancer is more than just living. It’s an attitude about life and living each day to the fullest,” said Frances Goerlich, director of Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land. “You will find our Cancer Survivor’s Day event filled
with joy, camaraderie, hope, compassion, faith and love as we honor cancer survivors for their strength and courage.” “National Cancer Survivors Day is a great opportunity for cancer survivors, caregivers, friends and family to come together and affirm the possibility of quality of life after a diagnosis of cancer,” added Clive Shkedy, M.D., radiation oncologist and medical director of Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land. Anyone living with a personal history of cancer – from the moment of diagnosis through the remainder of life – is a cancer survivor, according to the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation. Additionally, the foundation says that more people are surviving cancer than ever before, thanks to advances in prevention, early detection, treatment and follow-up care. Cancer, however, does come with
many challenges, such as hindered access to cancer specialists and promising new treatments, inadequate or no insurance, financial hardships, employment problems and psychological struggles. “Despite these difficulties, cancer survivors can live active, productive lives with the support of other survivors,” said Shkedy. Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land welcomes all local cancer survivors and a guest to join us as we honor survivors living with a history of cancer. The Cancer Survivors Day Celebration and Luncheon will be held Friday, June 3 from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s new Brazos Pavilion Conference Center. Registration is required. Register online at houstonmethodist. org/events or call 281-274-7500.

Sugar Land doctor treats common vein disease BY JOE SOUTHERN jsouthern@fortbendstar.com
A
lthough the results may appear to be cosmetic, the work Dr. Tonie Reincke does at Metro Vein Centers in Sugar Land is focused on treatment of disease, not the beautification of a patient’s legs. Any beautification is just a pleasant side effect. Reincke primarily treats people suffering from chronic venous insufficiency. Classifications include spider veins, varicose veins, and swelling, skin changes and ulcers of the legs. Some of the more common symptoms are aching legs, swelling, night cramps, restless legs, itching and burning, and pain while standing. “Not all vein disease is visible,” she said. Treating vein disease is quick with almost no downtime for the patient and is covered by insurance. “It takes about an hour time total here,” she said. From the time the patient walks into the office until they leave after treatment, the process takes no more than an hour with no recovery time. “They can resume their normal activities. There is no downtime,” Reincke said. The procedure is not surgical and is done in-house. There are no narcotics or prescriptions. “I do all the procedures from start to finish,” she said. Reincke wants people to understand that Metro Vein Centers is a medical facility and not a place for cosmetic surgery. She said less than 1 percent of the work she does is cosmetic. Most of the time she refers cosmetic cases to other doctors. Many of the cases she sees are referred from primary care physicians (PCP). “Other than cosmetics, my work is covered by insurance because it’s considered medically necessary,” she said. She said some insurances require a referral from a PCP, but others will cover
10
self-referring patients. According to Reincke, about one in three people will have chronic venous disease, although most won’t know it. It happens slowly and the accompanying pain comes in the form of an ache that the patient has learned to live with. “You don’t have to live with it,” she said. Patients come for an initial consultation and screening. Reincke said a registered vascular technician uses an ultrasound device to locate the extent of the diseased veins. Once that is determined, she does a heat treatment to close the veins using a laser in a process known as endovenous laser treatment. The procedure is done under a local anesthetic. “It’s not pain-free,” she said. “There is some discomfort but it’s not painful.” Once a procedure is complete, the patient puts on a pair of compression hose and starts walking. Once they leave the office, they can resume all normal activity except for heavy lifting. She said the disease occurs as the valves in the veins stretch and quit working properly. That causes blood to pool, stretching the veins and causing swelling and pain. The majority of cases she sees are from people with a genetic predisposition to it. Other cases are caused by people who are on their feet a lot and those with significant weight gain. She tells her patients that what she does is a treatment, not a cure. The disease can recur and patients should be checked annually. She said her patients are both men and women because the disease is not gender specific. Reincke’s office is spacious and her staff numbers about five. She prides herself that when you call or visit, you will speak with her and not an answering service. She co-owns the business with a group of doctors who have other Metro Vein Centers in Michigan and New Jersey. Reincke is originally from Indiana. She graduated from Indiana University as a registered nurse, completed the physician assistant program at St. Francis University and graduated from Wayne

Central Fort Bend Chamber welcomes Big State Plumbing with a ribbon cutting
B
ig State Plumbing has tripled its growth in the last few years, and the local owners are excited to continue to grow in Fort Bend County. The Central Fort Bend Chamber welcomed Big State Plumbing with a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday, April 7, at the company’s new location at 11510 Highway 36 in Needville, where dozens of local business owners and community members welcomed the staff. The owner of Big State Plumbing, Morgan Donaho, says they are growing incredibly fast and look to expand services soon. Donaho and his wife took over the company from a family member, and are proud of the more than 20 years of service the company has put into the region. “We are trying to get more involved in the community, we want to reach out to our neighbors and build from there. It’s important to us to keep our family-oriented feel and treat our customers like we would treat our family,” Donaho said. Big State Plumbing began in Angleton, offering services for residential and commercial plumbing, but as operations grew the business needed more space. Donaho says the new building in Needville will provide the ability to expand in the future. For more information, contact Big State Plumbing at www.bigstateplumbing.com. For more information about the chamber, call 281342-5464 or visit www.CFBCA.org.

Rainbow of Love helps mothers in need
Y
ears ago as a new employee of Child Protective Services (CPS), Debbie Richards saw a trend that disturbed her as much as the cases and faces of abused children. She was haunted by the stories of single mothers living in poverty and unable to care for their babies. Their situations were not criminal, they were tragic, and she knew she wanted to help. “Poverty is not a crime,” Richards said. “Sometimes you just can’t afford a car seat and we want our kids to be safe.” Her second case as a CPS worker was with a single mother who could not afford to care for her child. “She said ‘I’m doing the best I can but no one is helping me,’” Richards said. She said she saw a lot of mothers who could not afford to care for their babies. Rather than being judgmental, she commended them for choosing life. She also knew she wanted to be part of the solution. After consulting with some friends at church, Rainbow of Love was born. The agency started offering services to support impoverished mothers in 2002 and in 2004 Rainbow of Love became Rainbow of Love Adoption Agency, a licensed adoption agency and an official tax-exempt, nonprofit organization. then, Richards estimates that the organization has helped thousands of disadvantaged mothers and facilitated hundreds of domestic and state adoptions. The agency provides goods and services to single mothers in need. They also provide adoption services for those who elect to not keep their baby. Jamie Keylor of Houston is one of those people. In 2012 she found herself pregnant and in no position to raise a child. “I was scared,” she said. As she was leaving the hospital after finding out she was pregnant, she went looking for a phone book. She flipped to the listings of adoption agencies, pointed her finger at one and made the call. That put Keylor in contact with Richards. “She came out and met me. We sat down and we had lunch,” Keylor said. “She told me about the complete process from my end and about the process from the adoption parents end.” She said she did not consider abortion as an option. “I wanted what was best for the baby and I knew it wouldn’t be best for him to be with me,” she said. Keylor had one stipulation for the adoption and that was that the baby go to a family that did not already have children. Richards helped her select the adoptive parents.

Two members of the Houston Texans stopped by Rainbow of Love’s booth at the Sixth Annual Classic Chevrolet Chili Challenge April 14 in Sugar Land. Kenny Hilliard, left and Alfred Blue (center) pose with Itoro Collins, Cynthia Nguyen, Cindy Rizo and Joanne Linden.
“I met with them three times before the baby was born,” she said. “The adoptive mother was in the room with me for the birth. She got to see him before I did.” During the pregnancy, Rainbow of Love provided Keylor with prenatal vitamins and assisted with rent and other needs. “When they say they’ll help you with anything you need, they’ll help you with anything you need,” she said. The adoption was open, so the family shares pictures and information about the boy with Keylor. Richards said the birth mothers can choose they type of adoption they want to
have. An open adoption allows for contact between the mother and the adoptive family. A semi-open adoption allows limited access and a closed adoption is confidential without contact. Last year, Keylor gave birth to a second son. She turned again to Rainbow of Love and placed her baby for adoption. This one is closed and the boy now lives in Michigan. “I didn’t know how I would feel about the process,” she said. “If you have somebody you can lean on or call, it helps,” she said. She added that her care was so good that she does not have any separation anx-

iety. She said she feels comfortable with her choice. Richards said that is exactly what Rainbow of Love wants all of their clients to feel, whether they keep their babies or place them into adoption. She said she came up with the name of the organization from the Bible in Genesis 9:13 where it says God placed a rainbow in the clouds to signify that the storm had ended. “We wanted the women to know that whatever crisis they are going through it has an end with compassion and love,” she said. For the women who choose to raise their children, Rainbow of Love is there to help. “Most of these moms didn’t have a baby shower,” Richards said. “There is no car seat, no stroller and not enough diapers.” The organization collects donations of new items such as diapers, car seats, strollers, toddler toys and new clothes and shoes. They are then delivered to mothers and babies who need them. “We know that when you have a baby or toddler that just getting out is difficult,” she said. Rainbow of Love is always seeking donations, especially when they gear up for their four annual events to help the clients. CONTINUES...

At Christmas, the mothers are given diapers, car seats, strollers, cribs and gifts for their child. For Easter they give care baskets and include dresses for the girls and outfits for the boys. They are currently working on the Mother’s Day care packages that include inspirational poems, a basket of soothing gifts and some food. Later this summer they will provide a diaper bag filled with items they need for children going to daycare or preschool. Not only does Rainbow of Love need donations, the agency also needs volunteers and board members. There is a staff of 10, but like any nonprofit organization, volunteers are vital. They help the agency network in the community and keep current with trends and local happenings. The staff is as multicultural as the community and several languages are spoken, including English, Spanish, French, Viet-

namese, Mandarin, Hindi and Malayan. “We do have some moms who are new to the country and we can communicate with them in their own language as well,” Richards said. She said most of the mothers who decide to place their baby in adoption are either very young and in no condition to parent or older, already established in a career – perhaps with a family – and not wanting to start over with a baby. “The pregnancy may not be planned and it’s not the right time for them … but the main thing is they chose life,” Richards said. For parents wanting to adopt, there are criteria they have to meet, such as background checks, good health and at least one parent must be a working professional. Applicants must also be within the age range of 25 to 55. Once home study is approved, they are placed on a waiting list
that can last anywhere from two weeks to two years. “We’ve never had anyone wait longer than two years to be matched with a birth mother,” Richards said. Rainbow of Love works closely with other community groups and governmental organizations, including the courts. One of the services they provide is parenting classes. Many of those enrolled in the class are court-ordered to do so. Others are mothers looking for all the help they can get raising their babies. Certificates are issued upon completion. Rainbow of Love has two locations in Missouri City and one in Houston. It is a member of the Texas Alliance for Child and Family Services, Child Welfare League Association, Texas Network of Youth Services, Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, Central Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and Greater Houston Partnership.

The relationships, networking opportunities & leadership skills I gained were priceless. I highly recommend the program to anyone looking to enhance their careers.” -Himesh Gandhi, Sugar Land City Councilman “In 2012, Classic will graduate it’s fourth executive from Leadership, and I intend to send at least one employee every year...more if I can spare them! I love this program so much that I am now the primary sponsor. It is a terrific program exemplifying all the best about Fort Bend County and the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. If you want to build personal and business relationships that last, while learning about the unique, special place we live, then enroll in Leadership... it works!” -Don Kerstetter, Owner, Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land “The Fort Bend Leadership Forum exceeded my expectations in so many ways. My only regret is I waited too long to enroll. I feel I have 24 new friends and could call on any of my classmates for advice, a business opportunity or just for a lunch or happy hour date. I highly recommend the course to emerging leaders as well as seasoned professionals who want to learn more about our county and be equipped to lead us into the future.” -Ruthanne Mefford, Executive Director, Child Advocates of Fort Bend
