T
he old saying that an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure has never been truer than it is today. Most people don’t think about their health until something goes wrong. Dr. Logan Barbiche and Theresa Buede of ReConnect Chiropractic and Holistic Center want to change that for their clients. Their focus is on keeping people healthy, not making them healthy. They do both but with the desire of changing mindsets and attitudes about health. “They’re not in a hospital bed or picking out a casket so they think they’re healthy,” Barbiche said of the average person. At ReConnect in Missouri City, the emphasis is on holistic health, meaning care for the whole body, mind and spirit. Barbiche is a chiropractor. By working on the back, he cares for the central nervous system, through which flows the energy of life. If there is a problem with the spine, there will be problems elsewhere in the body. With Barbiche focused on the core, Buede tends to the rest. In addition to massage and dietary counseling, she offers non-invasive full-body bioscans, health assessments, dietary and fitness programs, cancer
recovery and prevention, eating well cooking classes, far-infrared sauna therapy, floatation therapy, elite athlete training, lymphatic stimulation, detox body wraps and more. Together they can help people not only recover from their ailments, but also thrive. By investing in one’s health they can prevent an even more costly outlay in hospitalization and medical treatment later. Most Americans treated by doctors and hospitals today are there because of preventable problems. A program of good diet and fitness along with maintenance of mind, body and soul are the perfect Rx to keep healthcare costs at bay. It also affects quality of life. And let’s face it, you only get one life to live, so take care of it and make the most of it. To learn more about Barbiche and Buede and the services offered by ReConnect, be sure to read the story inside this issue of the Fort Bend/Katy Business Journal. 40 Years of Life Flight, 40 Days of Thanks Memorial Hermann Life Flight celebrates 40th anniversary by extending its appreciation to the community it serves
F
our decades after launching the innovative air ambulance service known today as Memorial Hermann Life Flight, Memorial Hermann Health System will commemorate the program’s momentous 40th anniversary by expressing its gratitude to the community that has helped make the lifesaving service possible. The campaign, called “40 Years of Life Flight, 40 Days of Thanks,” kicked off in August with an official proclamation from Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner’s office, presented by Houston City Council Member Jack Christie on the helipad of Life Flight’s home base at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (TMC), declaring Aug. 1, 2016 as “Memorial Hermann Life Flight Day.” “Today is a special day, not just for Life Flight, but for the entire city of Houston, as we reflect back on the pioneering leadership that helped make this program possible and celebrate the many accomplishments that have defined Life Flight’s reputation as a trailblazer among air ambulance services,” said Brian Dean, Senior Vice President and CEO of Memorial Hermann-TMC. Throughout the next 40 days, the Life Flight team will be showing their gratitude in various ways, including extending their thanks to EMS partners and first responders throughout the region who serve a key role in helping Life Flight retrieve Houston’s critically ill and injured patients, and by visiting campuses across the System for individual meetand-greets and to thank colleagues for their partnership in saving lives.
4
Memorial Hermann will join the community in celebrating Life Flight’s trailblazing history and excellence in aviation safety and high quality, clinical care with a special social media campaign recognizing the countless lives saved by Life Flight over the years. Using the hashtag #LifeFlight40 on Facebook, Twitter or other social media channels, former patients and community members are invited to share their personal stories with and gratitude for Houston’s saviors in the sky. In addition, the Memorial Hermann Foundation is commemorating the occasion by encouraging the community to continue its philanthropic support of the program by pledging to donate $40 in honor of Life Flight’s 40 years of service. Provided as a community service by Memorial Hermann, Life Flight operates as a hospital-based, non-profit organization and relies on community support and fundraising efforts to pay for the service. It costs about $3 million annually to support the program, none of which comes from tax dollars. Along with the celebration, Memorial Hermann-TMC continues to honor the legacy of the founder and long-time medical director of Life Flight, legendary UTHealth trauma surgeon Dr. James H. “Red” Duke, who passed away nearly one year ago on Aug. 25, 2015. Dr. Duke’s visionary leadership helped revolutionize trauma care, not just in Houston, but across the country. In May, Memorial Hermann renamed its trauma institute, one of the nation’s busiest Level I trauma centers, the Memorial Hermann Red Duke Trauma Institute in his memory. “From its earliest days, Life Flight has

played a critical role in preserving Dr. Duke’s vision of providing a robust trauma care system for all patients, regardless of their wealth or status or whether they lived in the city, the suburbs, the rural outskirts or the frontier, as he liked to call it,” said Eric Von Wenckstern, administrative director of Life Flight. “His passion was taking care of mankind, helping all people who were injured or sick, and making sure we were doing our best and maintaining the highest standards of care to ensure the best possible outcomes for patients. As we celebrate another watershed moment in Life Flight’s history, I know Dr. Duke would be immensely proud of what the program has achieved in 40 short years,” said Tom Flanagan, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Memorial Hermann-TMC. Founded on Aug. 1, 1976 as a groundbreaking medical flight program aimed at expediting the transport of critically ill and injured patients across the Greater Houston area, Life Flight was the first air ambulance service in Texas and the second such program in the nation. In the decades since, Life Flight has maintained its premiere status and evolved to keep pace with the changing demands of trauma care. “The program has evolved from a service that functions much like ambulances do today – hastening trauma patients as quickly as possible to the hospital – to a sophisticated and state-of-the-art program that begins delivering advanced, prehospital trauma care in the sky,” said Dr. Joseph Love, who is only the second continued, on page 13

Renowned money experts Ramsey, Cruze coming in October By Joe Southern
A
nyone familiar with personal finance guru Dave Ramsey will likely be familiar with his daughter, Rachel Cruze. Both of them will be in Houston Oct. 22 for Dave Ramsey’s Smart Conference but Cruze will be here two weeks earlier on a tour promoting her new book, “Love Your Life, Not Theirs.” She will be at Books-A-Million at Katy Mills Mall on Oct. 12. It’s the same place her father stopped when he went on a nationwide book tour five years ago. Cruze is promoting her second book and her first solo endeavor. Her first book, “Smart Money Smart Kids,” was co-authored with Ramsey. “This one is all me,” Cruze said in a telephone interview with the Fort Bend Star. As the title indicates, the book, which comes out Oct. 3, is about keeping up with the Joneses, or rather, not keeping up with the Joneses. Cruze said that people in today’s culture are obsessed with being first to have the newest and latest gadgets and they’re drowning in debt to possess things and live a lifestyle way beyond their means. “In our culture we’re letting other people’s lives and expectations dictate how we handle money,” she said. “Their lifestyles and influences are dictating our lifestyles.” Her book offers seven steps for getting control of your life and your money. Cruze, like her father, urges people to live below their means, pay off their debt and live a generous debt-free life. Although they share a financial philosophy, there is room for more than one author in the family. “How do I write a money book that’s different than Dave’s? My perspective is different,” she said. Where Ramsey uses head knowledge and logic in his approach, Cruze is relational and generational with a strong appeal toward millennials.
6
“It’s a heart issue,” she said. “This message is needed more than ever,” she added. Her first and most important step is to quit comparisons. She said people need to learn to stop being envious of their friends, neighbors and especially things they see on social media and to be satisfied with what they have. Her second point is to steer clear of debt. To be clear on this point, she defined debt. “Debt is owing anything to anyone for any reason,” she said. Cruze said people must develop good money habits. “Debt steals your peace of mind,” she said. She said debt limits your options in life and has you working to make payments and not build wealth. “That’s what debt does; it has you looking through the rearview mirror instead of the windshield,” she said. Her third point is to make a plan for your money by creating and using a budget. “You need to get control of your money without it controlling you,” she said. The fourth step falls in line with the third. “Talk about money, even if it seems hard,” she said. She said spouses have to be open and honest in all areas of money and not afraid to talk about it. The fifth step is to save like you mean it. “ Your savings is not only your buffer against life’s unexpected events, but it also allows you to retire comfortably and make sure your kids are prepared when they go to college,” she said. Her sixth point is to think before you spend. “ Believe me, I love to spend as much as anyone. That means I’ve got to be intentional and make sure I’m spending with a purpose,” she said. The final point in her book is to give a little ... until you can give a lot. “Giving is the most impactful thing you can do with money. That’s why it’s so important to make a habit of giving, even if you

don’t have a lot to give away,” she said. Cruze said that growing up as the daughter of Dave Ramsey wasn’t what many might expect. “It was always different than a lot of people assume,” she said. “There were no trust fund parties or marathon budget sessions. Mom and dad were very intentional with money but not obsessive about it.” She said she was fortunate to grow up with the gift of knowing how to handle money. It helped her in college and as a speaker for Ramsey Solutions. She has been speaking in public about money since she was 15 years old and that is what she will be doing when she joins her father and other team members when they come to Houston Saturday, Oct. 22, for the Dave Ramsey’s Smart Conference at Grace Community Church. The daylong event provides attendees with critical information to help them be smart in areas of life including money, marriage, parenting, retirement and personal growth. Speakers for the Smart Conference include: • Dave Ramsey: Personal finance expert, author of seven best-selling books, and host of

elsey-Seybold – Sienna Plantation Clinic opened recently at 7010 Highway 6, Missouri City, near the Oilfield Road/Lake Olympia Parkway intersection. The $9-million investment will grow the clinic’s footprint in Fort Bend County. KelseySeybold – Sienna Plantation Clinic, a one-story, 23,800-square-foot medical office building, is the third clinic to open in Fort Bend County and will offer primary care and medical specialties near the Sienna Plantation, Lake Olympia and Riverstone communities. “Fort Bend County has some of the most well-planned communities, offering amenities that are desirable to anyone looking for a peaceful place to live and raise a family,” said Tony Lin, M.D., F.H.M., Chairman of the Board of Managers at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “It’s the reason why we’ve seen tremendous growth in the number of patients visiting our clinics in Fort Bend and the reason why we decided to expand our services, offering additional primary care at our new Sienna Plantation Clinic.” Six physicians in four specialties will be October 2016 H Fort Bend / Katy Business Journal
offering medical services to patients, they include: Family medicine physician Dr. Mehreen Fatima, internal medicine physicians Dr. Nadya Alibhai and Dr. Wilber Estrada, pediatrics physicians Dr. Richard Byrd and Jessica Lanerie and obstetrics/gynecology physician Dr. Adrienne LeGendre. Additional primary care and specialty care physicians will be added as the surrounding community grows. At Kelsey-Seybold Clinic – Sienna Plantation, patients will also have access to ancillary services including laboratory and X-ray. Additionally, an onsite pharmacy will make filling prescriptions quick and easy for patients looking for one-stop-shopping. Sienna Plantation patients have additional medical and diagnostic services less than seven miles away at Kelsey-Seybold’s Fort Bend Medical and Diagnostic Center, the organization’s hub for specialty services south of Houston. “The Sienna Plantation and Riverstone communities are experiencing unprecedented growth, which is why we chose this location for our 20th clinic. Having a clinic here not only offers us the opportunity to expand our offerings in Fort Bend, but to also pace our growth with the growth of the communities that we serve,” Dr. Lin said. The new Kelsey-Seybold – Sienna Plantation Clinic location was designed by architects at Page. Gamma Construction was the general contractor for this project.
National Tractors growing to meet equipment needs By Joe Southern
N
ational Tractors in Rosenberg has only been around three and a half years and is in its second location with thoughts of a third as it positions itself to become the largest tractor and trailer dealership in the region. Managed by Darrel Uselton, the business has seen slow but steady growth and has been continually diversifying its offerings. National Tractors features Branson Tractors among other brands and is also expanding a line of trailers that include Sundowner, Ranch King and Top Hat. Beyond the tractors and trailers, National Tractors offers truck beds, mowers, trimmers, blowers, chainsaws and more. It also provides parts and repairs and sells refurbished equipment and consignments. Kevin Whitton was recently brought on board for his extensive knowledge of trailer sales. “We’re trying to become a trailer

destination,” he said. He said they have a wide variety of trailers for ranchers, sportsmen, rodeo, commercial and more. They have enclosed utility trailers, fifth wheels, car carriers, horse and cattle trailers, dumpers, landscape trailers, movers, motorcycle haulers, hay trailers and more. Whitton said he is working to expand brand offerings as well as move into trailer
rentals. The bread and butter of the organization are the extensive line of Branson tractors. They also sell used John Deere tractors among others. They have loaders, backhoes, open-air and enclosed climate-controlled models, mowers and more. “Our mower business has been out of sight the last two weeks,” Uselton said. When it comes to mowers, National Tractors has a wide variety of zero turns from Grasshopper, Big Dog and Bob-Cat. Uselton said he didn’t know why mower sales picked up suddenly at the end of the season but he’s not complaining. “We’re doing a lot of light construction business,” Uselton said. Among their offerings are skid steers and Ditch Witches. They have several items in both new and used inventory. Uselton’s son Chad works with him. The company employs about 10 people and is located at 4911 Avenue H in Rosenberg. It’s the site of the old United Rentals, next door to McCoy’s Building Supply.

Reggio Emilia-inspired WIDE School opens in Fort Bend
C
hild-directed learning has a new home with the opening of the first large-scale, Reggio Emilia-inspired school in Fort Bend. The 15,000-square-foot WIDE School at 2777 Dulles Ave. in Missouri City houses two schools — the WIDE Preschool and the WIDE School for students in grades kindergarten through fifth, as well as an art studio, a full-service kitchen, an on-site aquaponics system, a garden and a chicken coop. The WIDE name is an acronym for Wonder, Investigate, Discover and Educate. Those words sum up the philosophy of the school, which was founded upon the principles of the Reggio Emilia approach, by sisters Maryam Lumpkin and Marjon Aucoin. “Marjon and I love that Reggio Emilia truly addresses the whole child,” said Lumpkin, who is the WIDE School’s director. “It is a philosophy that incorporates creativity and innovation while at the same time placing a strong emphasis on academics. Essentially, children truly learn how to learn, and then apply their knowledge in innovative ways.” This approach was developed by educator Loris Malaguzzi and the townspeople of Reggio Emilia in Italy, who wished to discover innovative ways to educate children. As with the better-known Montessori Method, children are believed to be competent, resourceful and independent, but while Montessori schools tend to encourage individual work, Reggio schools focus on collaboration — an emphasis Lumpkin loves. “I love the partnership between the teachers and children, and the idea that they are our equals,” she said. “The philosophy allows for education to be exciting and for children to love learning.” At the WIDE School, teachers and members of an in-house creative team called Think Tank observe children’s play and then help deepen those experiences by presenting them with items related to their interests, asking open-ended questions and supporting their efforts to experiment. Children engage in art, music, dance and drama to learn and express their ideas. Lumpkin, who has a BA in business administration, trained under her

aunt Nikou Fatemizadeh, joining her at the Little Wonders Learning Center in Sugar Land in 2001. Lumpkin eventually became the director of the preschool and daycare facility, developing a partnership with her sister, a professional artist. As their combined five children got older, they added The School of Wonders, an elementary school that reflected the Reggio approach. The school quickly reached capacity so the sisters moved to a larger space in Missouri City, with the goal of someday building an even larger campus. They broke ground on the Dulles Avenue facility in June 2015. The ribbon cutting ceremony was held July 27 of this year. The new campus will not only provide space for the current 155 students; the private school has been approved through high school and will add one new grade a year. The WIDE School currently accepts children from six weeks of age through fifth grade. For more information, visit www.thewideschool.com/ who-we-are.

Medical Director of Life Flight in the program’s history and an associate professor of surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. “We are now bringing the lifesaving capabilities of an emergency center directly to the patient. We are witnessing the future of trauma, not just in Houston, but across the country.” Since its inception, the program has expanded from a single helicopter and a handful of crew members to a fleet of six helicopters and 74 crew members capable of retrieving patients within a 150-mile radius of the Texas Medical Center, or worldwide using fixed-wing transport. Each helicopter can carry up to two patients and comes equipped with state-of-the-art emergency medical treatments, including prehospital blood product administration, portable blood warmers, ultrasound diagnostics, video-assisted intubations and tools to open blocked airways. All crew members carry night-vision goggles during flight to help to improve safety. Two years ago, the program became the first air ambulance service in Southeast Texas to be granted authority to fly under instrument flight rules (IFR), which allows the crew to fly when visibility is limited or clouds are low. Life Flight has been the winner of the Texas Department of State Health Services’ EMS Air Medical Service of the Year Award three different times in 2014, 2004 and 2001. The prestigious award honors a public or private air medical service in Texas that has demonstrated the highest standards in providing patient care, leading the way in innovation and commitment to patient care. The program was also recently named EMS/ Air Medical Partner of the Year by the SouthEast Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC), a nonprofit organization – which was also founded by Dr. Duke – whose role is to prepare counties across Southeast Texas for man-made or natural emergencies, disasters and mass casualty events. The program was also recently featured in a six-episode docudrama series that aired on Lifetime TV called “Life Flight: Trauma Center Houston,” which highlighted not only the Life Flight team but also Memorial Hermann-TMC and Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital staff, nurses and affiliated physicians from McGovern Medical School. The original series gave viewers a front row seat to all of the real-life action inside the Memorial Hermann Red Duke Trauma Institute, following the clinicians as they dealt with highrisk, high-stress situations while racing against the clock to save the lives of their patients in critical condition.

eConnect Chiropractic and Holistic Center in Missouri City is a place to find not just healing for the whole body but true care for one’s health. Owners Dr. Logan Barbiche and Theresa Buede have each had unique journeys of healing that led them to become healers. Barbiche, who is more commonly known as Dr. Logan, strained his body with aggressive sports and fitness training. Buede had a near-death experience while battling cancer. Drawing from those experiences they are now committed to healing the mind, body and spirit of each person who walks through their door. “The power that makes the body heals the body,” Barbiche said. “What we do is a small thing but what the body does with that is a big thing.” Barbiche’s focus is on chiropractic care. Buede handles massage, nutrition and other holistic aspects of mending and caring for the body. The two met about two and a half years ago through a mutual friend. “We shared such similar beliefs about how to heal the body,” Buede said. Faith in God is central to what they do. Contemporary Christian music is usually played in the office for both its message and the positive energy it conveys. “I don’t ever want to take glory away from God,” Barbiche said. He said faith is essential to life. “I’m concerned about being faithful, not successful … If I’m faithful I will be successful,” he said. Barbiche is very affable and brings a high level of energy into everything he does. It’s his belief that energy is at the core of human beings. “We are living antennas of energy,” he said. He explained that the brain is a bundle of nerves that communicates through electrical impulses that are radiated throughout the body through the central nervous system. The core of that system is contained within the spine. When it becomes weak or damaged it has a domino effect on systems down the line. It’s just such a case that caused him severe problems years ago. The curve in his neck straightened out, affecting his esophagus and causing bad reflux. His doctor told him that had a high chance of developing throat cancer. Having the corrective chiropractic care not only cured his reflux but it put him on a new career trajectory. He started out as an athlete.
Born in New Jersey, he went to East Carolina University on a baseball scholarship. As an outfielder and pitcher, he suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined his baseball career. He moved to Florida and became a professional bodybuilder. “It was a means to tame my inner beast,” he said. After going through a series of jobs he became a floor manager for a sports and fitness clinic. “I had a feeling there was more I could do to improve the quality of people’s lives,” he said. It was around this time when a friend convinced him to see a chiropractor. Barbiche was reluctant due to a previous bad experience but gave it another try. “I went in and it changed my life,” he said. That’s when he first started thinking about becoming a chiropractor. Already a certified strength and conditioning specialist, he became certified in Reiki, a Japanese method of channeling energy through a healing touch. CONTINUES...

Dr. Logan Barbiche became a chiropractor to help better the lives of his patients. He gives receptionist Ashton Figueroa a neck adjustment at the office in Missouri City.

As he thought about becoming a chiropractor, a series of odd coincidences kept pointing him in that direction. Among them was the discovery that “two chaps” that were friends of his grandfathers turned out to be B.J. Palmer, the son of David Palmer, widely considered to be the father of chiropractics, and Sid Williams, the founder of Life University, a school in Georgia founded to train chiropractors. Eventually he put in his application to Life University and graduated in 2010. A short time later he moved to Texas and met Buede. “We had a similar vision (about health care), we just didn’t know that,” she said. Buede had been an event coordinator for 30 years. In 1998 she was diagnosed with cancer. In 2011 she had a recurrence and found herself in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. “I had a near-death experience,” she said. She said she was shown a “sea of souls for me to help if I came back to my body.” “I said yes to that,” she said. After she recovered she began to study the body and natural methods of healing. She learned massage and nutrition and natural ways to detoxify the body and restore health naturally. She opened a practice in 2012 and then this year opened ReConnect with Barbiche on March 17. They envisioned it as a one-stop shop for holistic health. Barbiche x-rays the spine and performs structural correction of the spine. He also provides whole-body vibration therapy. Buede, in addition to massage and dietary counseling, offers non-invasive full-body bioscans, health assessments, dietary and fitness programs, cancer recovery and prevention, eating well cooking classes, far-infrared sauna therapy, elite athlete training, lymphatic stimulation, detox body wraps and more. ReConnect also has a float pod and offers floatation therapy. It involves floating in a tank of temperature-controlled salt water with complete sensory depravation. “When you’re in the Float Pod you don’t
Dr. Logan Barbiche makes an adjustment of Ashton Figueroa’s arm (lower photo) and explains to her how the adjustment will benefit her and reduce pain.
even know you have a body,” Buede said. The giant egg-shaped pod contains about 120 gallons of water and 1,000 pounds of Epsom salt, giving it the equivalent salinity of the Dead Sea. The human body will not sink, so a person can completely relax and float enclosed in the pod. The water is maintained at 93.3 degrees, the same as skin temperature, so it allows for great comfort and relaxation. Buede said the experience of sensory depravation allows the brain and body to get vital rest. “The brain waves slow down … and the theta brain wave pattern allows the body to rest and repair,” she said. Barbiche said ReConnect is built on the five pillars of health: maximizing the mind, maximizing air supply, maximizing oxygen in muscle tissue, quality nutrition and minimizing toxins. Their understanding of health care is simply that: Care of one’s health. Health care as it is commonly understood is medical treatment of disease and injury. Barbiche said Americans are spending a fortune repairing the neglect of their health and not investing in good health up front. “Drugs and surgery is not health,” he said. “You need to invest in your health and make health your greatest single asset … You’ll enjoy
a higher quality of life.” He said too often people “treat chiropractics like a pill and it doesn’t work like that.” He said chiropractic and holistic care of the body should be done for a lifetime, not just when there is pain or discomfort. “You do this for the rest of your life. It’s like brushing your teeth. You don’t just brush once and you’re done. You have to keep up with it,” he said.
