Buying Land: Who Should be the Buyer?

It will help to keep the property separate and distinct, limit your individual liability and assist in shielding your personal assets.

In order for this structure to provide these benefits, the LLC will need to be maintained separately from you as an individual to show that you and the entity are not one and the same.

LLCs are not taxed as a separate business entity, instead, all profits and losses are “passed through” the entity to each member of the LLC. There are expenses that go into setting up an LLC, but the advantages outweigh the costs.

hen purchasing real estate, consideration should be given to who should be the “Buyer”.

Purchasing real estate as an entity versus as an individual can yield different results. If you are purchasing property as your primary residence, it may be beneficial to purchase it in your individual capacity or with a spouse.

In an individual capacity you may be able to claim a homestead exemption allowing you to save on taxes and also offer creditor protection.

If you are purchasing investment property, then you should consider purchasing as an entity. Limited liability companies (“LLCs”) are one of the preferred entities to hold real estate since LLCs offer liability protection.

Missouri City private school educates through experience

M

aryam Lumpkin believes that testing is important, but she doesn’t think it should define a child’s educational

experience.

Lumpkin, the director of Little Wonders Child Care and Preschool in Missouri City at 4743 Lexington Blvd., has created a learning environment where students apply their knowledge and find new schools in everything they do.

If it’s a cooking lesson, the students are learning about Math. If it’s a field trip to a nature preserve, they’re discovering the history behind the birds they view.

“We follow the TEKS, but we don’t limit our teachers to it,” Lumpkin said. “We go way beyond what the state requires. The students take a standardized test, but the education is not centered around it. We use the environment as educator and do as much outdoor and hands-on learning as we can. We have a nutritionist on staff, and incorporate painting and dancing into the curriculum.”

Lumpkin and her sister, Little Wonders Art Director Marjon Aucoin, grew up in Sugar Land. Lumpkin and her aunt, Nikov Fatemizadeh, started Little Wonders on Eldridge Rd. in Sugar Land in 2001.

They decided to move to Missouri City for more space, and the school will soon be relocating to a new building at Cartwright/ Dulles in Missouri City.

The new building will start at 15,000 square foot, with room to grow.

Lumpkin has big plans for the school, which currently has 150 students. It has care for infants, toddlers and Pre-K students, as well as Kindergarten through third grade.

This year, they’ll add fourth grade with plans of adding a new grade each year.

A new name will better reflect the name of the school, which has already tripled since it moved to Missouri City and currently has a staff of 48 teachers.

The new name will be WIDE – an

acronym for Wonder, Investigate, Discover and Educate.

The plan is to go up to eighth grade, with the possibility of adding a high school.

If they choose to add a high school, Lumpkin said she may partner with her alma mater, Houston Baptist University, to offer college courses to the high school students.

The school’s growth signals an investment in the Missouri City community. Students come from the “Show Me City” as well as communities throughout Fort Bend and as far away as the Houston Heights.

“We want to educate community and have the community can come in and educate the children,” Lumpkin said. “We use illustration as a tool to describe the written word. We use every opportunity to include Math & Science.”

Little Wonders is based on the Reggio Emilia Approach. Reggio Emilia is an Italian town that was destroyed during

World War II. After the War, the townspeople re-invested in the community by building a quality pre-school based on teaching the children things that would be useful in daily life.

It is the only school of its kind in Fort Bend and is similar to the Montessori school model, which has become more popular over the years in the United States.

According to reggioalliance.org, the Reggio system includes distinctive traits such as “collegial and relational-based provocative experiences, the importance accredited to environments and spaces, intense coparticipation of families, affirmation of competencies in children and adults, educational documentation and listening.”

“Education should be learned everywhere,” Lumpkin said.

Richmond man coaches paralympic hockey players

T

wo Fort Bend County men have helped Paralympic ice hockey players in the Greater Houston area achieve their dreams.

Sugar Land resident Jim O’Neill founded a non-profit, Star Skaters, in 2009 to get physically and developmentally disabled individuals involved in ice skating, skate therapy and sled hockey.

Sled Hockey, invented in Sweden during the 1960s, allows participants who have a physical disability to play the game of ice hockey.

“I was watching a television show that discussed a program like that in Buffalo and checked around to see if there was anything like this in Houston, and there wasn’t,” said O’Neill, who referees recreational hockey games at the Sugar Land Ice & Sports Center and around the Greater Houston area.

O’Neill met Richmond resident Reid Williams at the Sugar Land rink and encouraged him to volunteer with StarSkaters, specifically the Sled Hockey program.

Williams began to volunteer, and before long, he was hooked. He eventually became the head coach, which is also a volunteer position.

“At the end of it, I couldn’t believe the joy in the players’ eyes,” Williams said. “It’s very rewarding. Every week, the payment of seeing what you’re doing and helping out these achievers is unmeasurable. The volunteers are constantly helping. It’s such a good, rewarding thing.”

The 25-member team is officially called Texas Sled Hockey, and often includes players from throughout Texas. The team, and StarSkaters, will be honored before a Sugar Land Skeeters game on Aug. 21.

Williams coached Rico Roman, who won a gold medal in the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi, Russia, and Kyle Huckaby, who won a world championship earlier this year.

tournament. Then, went on to score three.

Williams was always a hockey enthusiast but didn’t have any experience playing beyond the recreational level. He’s coached Texas Sled Hockey in the nationals for each of the past two seasons.

Williams has built a partnership with the Sugar Land Imperials, a junior hockey team that plays its home games at the local rink.

A Navy veteran who served in the Persian Gulf War, Williams moved to the Houston area to work as a drummer in a band.

Fort Bend Pedestrian Plaza receives award

T

he Fort Bend County Pedestrian Plaza located between the Historic Courthouse and the Travis Building in Richmond, Texas has been selected as an American Public Works Association (APWA) Texas Chapter Project of the Year for 2015. The award recognizes innovations in technology and management, special efforts to protect the environment during construction, safety performance, and efforts to minimize public inconvenience and adherence to completion date.

The Pedestrian Plaza was designed to enhance the visual appeal of the area while creating an inviting environment for pedestrian and community activities in a park-like setting in downtown Richmond.

The plaza includes picnic areas with benches and provides an attractive walkway between the two buildings enhancing the existing landscape. Plants native to the Houston Gulf Coast were incorporated for longevity and drought tolerance while an underground water collection system was designed to capture rainwater for use in the irrigation system for both the Travis Building and the Historic Courthouse reducing the need to rely on City utilities. Numerous utility lines were relocated underground to create a more natural setting, and significant improvements to storm drainage were included.

The project was a Fort Bend County collaboration with the Design Firm Huitt-Zollars, Inc. and General Contractor Bass Construction.

Sugar Land, Houston announce Cullinan Park partnership for the star

D

uring Monday’s Cullinan Park press conference, Sugar Land Mayor Jimmy Thompson asked the audience to envision what it was like when Stephen F. Austin viewed the land that is now Cullinan Park at Hwy. 6, near the Airport.

Thanks to an agreement between Sugar Land, Houston and the Cullinan Park Conservancy, generations of Fort Bend residents will get the opportunity to see the 754-acre park grow and improve. The park is located in Houston’s extraterritorial jurisdiction, just north of Sugar Land.

Under the agreement, the city of Houston retains ownership of the park, but

the city of Sugar Land will operate it for at least the next 30 years. It will be operated with respect to the Conservancy and the wishes of the Cullinan Family.

“This will be a real asset to the region – we really embrace the vision of the facility,” said Thompson, who was joined at the event by Houston Mayor Annise Parker and members of the Cullinan Family.

The inter-local agreement will take effect once the conservancy raises an initial contribution of $500,000.

A memorandum of understanding between Sugar Land and the Cullinan Conservancy outlines the conservancy’s fundraising efforts for the park, including a commitment of $10 million during the next 10 years. The George Foundation will contribute part of the funding for the park.

Cullinan Park

The Cullinan Park Conservancy, which seeks to enhance and protect the park’s natural beauty, was formed as a non-profit corporation in 2010, as a project of the taxexempt Houston Parks Board.

Council members Joe Zimmerman, Harish Jajoo and Himesh Gandhi all attended the event. Zimmerman has declared his candidacy for Mayor next May when Thompson becomes term-limited, and Jajoo said he’ll decide this fall whether he’ll run.

“What a great achievement for the city and our citizens,” Zimmerman said. “It has some unique features with fishing opportunities and bird watching.”

Jajoo said the fact that “two public entities working together with a private board” was impressive. He said Sugar Land will add another park, without having to contribute a great deal of overhead to it.

The Cullinan Park Conservancy contacted both Houston and Sugar Land months ago and proposed a partnership to further develop the acreage as a passive park that will preserve the natural beauty of the property.

The first phase includes improvements include improving access to the property through nature trails and bridges, as well as installation of a picnic pavilion and a children’s nature area.

S

tafford Mayor Leonard Scarcella breathed a sigh of relief recently when he discovered that the city wouldn’t have to provide Dallasbased Street Level Investments (SLI) between $20-25 million in incentives.

SLI is expected to move forward on a 192-acre mixed-development project at the former Texas Instruments property, at U.S. Hwy. 59/Interstate 69 and Kirkwood.

That includes plans for restaurants, apartments, light industrial, office space and of course, retail.

“I want quality retail,” Scarcella said. “I was never convinced that an outlet center is superior to all forms of retail.”

Scarcella said the city may negotiate incentives to attract high quality retail businesses to the city.

“As far as a blanket program that will feed them off sales tax (for years) — that is no longer on the table,” Scarcella said.

Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital recognized for High Quality Cardiac Care

emorial Hermann Southwest Hospital has received the American College of Cardiology’s NCDR ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award for 2015.

This is the second year in a row Memorial Hermann Southwest has received the award.

The award recognizes Memorial Hermann Southwest’s commitment and success in implementing a higher standard of care for heart attack patients and signifies that Memorial Hermann Southwest has reached an aggressive goal of treating these patients to standard levels of care as outlined by the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association clinical guidelines and recommendations.

“This award is a proud achievement for our team that reflects our commitment to providing the highest level of cardiac care to our patients and their families,” said Dr. David Portugal, interventional cardiologist, affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southwest.

“The implementation of these guidelines requires successful coordination of the cardiovascular team and emergency personnel

and is a critical step in saving the lives and improving outcomes of heart attack patients.”

To receive the ACTION Registry–GWTG Platinum Performance Achievement Award, Memorial Hermann Southwest consistently followed the treatment guidelines in the ACTION Registry–GWTG Premier for eight consecutive quarters and met a performance standard of 90 percent for specific performance measures.

Full participation in the registry engages hospitals in a robust quality improvement process using data to drive improvements in adherence to guideline recommendations and overall quality of care provided to heart attack patients.

“The American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association commend Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital for its success in implementing standards of care and protocols,” said James Jollis, MD, FACC, ACTION Registry-GWTG Chair and Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Duke University Hospital.

“The full implementation of acute and secondary prevention guideline-recommended therapy is a critical step in saving the lives and

improving outcomes of heart attack patients.”

The Centers for Disease Control estimates more than 700,000 Americans suffer a heart attack each year. A heart attack occurs when a blood clot in a coronary artery partially or completely blocks blood flow to the heart muscle. Treatment guidelines include administering aspirin upon arrival and discharge, timely restoration of blood flow to the blocked artery, smoking cessation counseling and cardiac rehabilitation, among others.

ACTION Registry–GWTG is a partnership between the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association with partnering support from the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care.

ACTION Registry-GWTG empowers health care provider teams to consistently treat heart attack patients according to the most current, science-based guidelines and establishes a national standard for understanding and improving the quality, safety and outcomes of care provided for patients with coronary artery disease, specifically high-risk heart attack patients.

bumper crop – that’s how the management team of Harvest Green is describing the turn out at a recent event to introduce the public to the collection of homebuilders planned for the farm-and-garden focused Fort Bend master-planned community.

A room packed with avid gardeners, those who have thought of backyard gardening and others who simply appreciate the concept of a neighborhood farm were among the close to 300 who filled Richmond’s Pecan Grove Country Club to meet Harvest Green’s homebuilders and learn about new homes in what is being hailed as Houston’s most innovative master-planned community.

ICD-10 is a diagnostic coding system used worldwide to classify symptoms, diseases, causes of injury and abnormal medical findings to help track public health conditions, provide data for epidemiological research and measure outcomes for patients. The number of procedural and diagnostic codes in Memorial Hermann System applications will increase from approximately 18,000 in the ICD-9 version to more than 150,000 with the upgrade to ICD-10.

“Memorial Hermann will continue to apply the rapidly changing improvements in IT and information systems to its clinical and administrative practices in a way that enhances quality patient care and service and aligns with our commitment to helping patients better their overall health and healthcare management,” Bradshaw said.

Health Care’s Most Wired Survey, conducted earlier this year, asked hospitals and health systems nationwide to answer questions regarding their IT initiatives. Respondents completed 741 surveys, representing 2,213 hospitals, or more than 39 percent of all U.S.

Fort Bend Cares announces new Board Members

alt White, Chairman of Fort Bend Cares’ Board of Trustees, recently announced that six new members have been selected to serve on the organization’s Board.

“I’m honored to be a part of this diverse, inclusive, working Board. We always miss our outgoing members, but we also know good things are ahead for our organization and community with our new trustees coming on board,” said White.

The new board members, serving three-year terms, are Sonal Bhuchar, Christopher Breaux, Lisa Cohen, Aarti Jain, Mary Joyce and Allison Wen. Sonal Bhuchar is with both Therapeutic Concepts and the Sugar Land Med Ped Clinic.

She has previously served on the Advisory Council for Fort Bend Cares. Bhuchar is involved in many other organizations including Child Advocates of Fort Bend, Sugar Land Cultural Arts Foundation, Literacy Council of Fort Bend and Sugar Land Heritage Foundation.

Going behind the scene with the Skeeters...

W

hen late April rolls around, the Sugar Land Skeeters hit the baseball diamond and fans come out in droves to support the Atlantic League’s attendance leader.

But the planning for the next season starts almost as soon as the current season concludes.

The Skeeters determine which promotions worked and which one’s didn’t. They have brain-storming meetings, headed by Assistant General Manager J.T. Onyett, to come up with any new ideas and themes.

“The promotions and themes are really directed toward the crowd, so they can have a fun time,” Onyett said. “We may go through 150 different ideas and chose the best ones.”

The team is open to ideas from any staff members, and the promotions/themes run for “90s Night” to “Star Wars Night” and everything in between. On some nights, there are more one theme going on.

When it comes to building community partnerships, the Skeeters are second to none.

They host a “Strike Out Autism” game with local non-profit, Hope for Three, and host a “Strike Out Cancer” game with Memorial Hermann. During both games, the players wear special uniforms that are auctioned off to raise money for the respective charities.

Before each game, Onyett and his staff have a brief meeting to discuss the plan for that evening’s game. Every staff member knows their responsibilities and where they’re supposed to be.

Beyond baseball, the Skeeters work to use Constellation Field as a “365-day-a-year facility and the entertainment hot spot in Fort Bend.”

They build partnerships with promoters, such as a group that’s bringing a concert — Eli Young Band and Chris Young to Constellation Field on Oct. 9.

When the baseball team is out of town, that’s when the Operations crew does a ton of preparation work.

“When the team is gone, we’re trying to catch up as much as we can,” said Skeeters Operations Manager Donnie Moore, who started with the team during the inaugural 2012 season as Assistant Operations Manager and was promoted after the 2014 season.

The biggest challenge is keeping everything clean — heather a mess was left by fans, weather elements or birds.

everything is safe,” Moore said. “The biggest challenge is the size of the facility. But we prepare with the fan experience in mind. We know that every game we’re going to have someone here for the very first time. And we want to make sure that person has a good experience.”

Kyle Dawson spends most of his time in the Insperity Club, ensuring that all of the Skeeters’ suite owners enjoy their game experience.

Dawson, a Richmond native and Lamar Consolidated alum, worked in a similar capacity for the Houston Astros before signing on with the Skeeters. There are 21 private suites, with 15 seats in each one.

“We decorate the suites in accordance with the suite holders’ wishes,” Dawson said. “It is like a ‘Baseball Country Club’ up here. There’s a good mix of family and baseball.”

Not everyone at the game is there to watch baseball, especially some of the youngsters who would rather play just beyond the outfield.

Thankfully, the Skeeters have Lou Ann Medbury as a Playground Manager.

Medbury, who retired as an elementary Physical Education teacher after 30 years, makes sure that the kids are safe on the playground.

She can successfully watch up to as many as 100 kids at a time.

“I love it— it’s just like a classroom,” Medbury said.

Stafford, Katy named to the Top 5 places in Texas to start a business The website Nerdwallet.com named the Top 10 Texas cities in which to start a business. Stafford and Katy ranked third and fourth, respectively.

The criteria included the number of businesses, average revenue per business, businesses with paid employees, businesses per 100 people and the city’s unemployment rate.

Stafford, which has a population of 17,840, has 2,723 businesses with an average revenue of $2.53 million. There are 15.26 businesses per 100 people, and the city’s unemployment rate is 3.9 percent.

The article noted Stafford eliminated municipal property tax 20 years ago.

Katy, population 14,891, has 6,907 businesses with an average revenue of $537,273 and 46.38 businesses per 100 people. Its unemployment rate is 3.7 percent.

The article stated that Katy has grown from a small Houston suburb to a city that is growing commercially as well, with a boost from the pro-business Katy Area Economic Development Council.

Fort Bend taps 2015 principal of the Year to lead Heritage Rose Elementary Heritage Rose Elementary School is welcoming a new principal, Fort Bend Independent School District 2015 Elementary Principal of the Year, Lavanta Williams.

Also new to the Lavanta Williams school is Tommy Bellard, who joins incumbent Nancy Sanchez as assistant principal at the school, one of four elementary schools that serve Sienna Plantation.

Williams brings 19 years of experience to Heritage Rose, first as a science specialist and teacher in Louisiana and then in administrative positions in Fort Bend ISD elementary schools. He joined the school district in 2008 serving as assistant principal first at Ridgemont Elementary and then, a year later, at Blue Ridge Elementary.

In 2011 he was named principal at another Fort Bend school, Ridgegate Elementary. During his tenure there, he was instrumental in dramatically raising math and reading scores.

He was chosen Elementary Principal of the Year by his peers in 2015 in recognition for his outstanding leadership, service and dedication to students, faculty and staff.

Williams said he is excited to join the Heritage Rose family. He envisions a future where parents, teachers and students work together to achieve academic success.

“This is going to be a team effort,” Williams said. “It’s a collaboration between the community, the parents, the kids, my staff and myself. We are planning to increase parental involvement, increase afterschool programs and do everything we can to help each child reach his or her full potential.”

Bellard joined Fort Bend ISD in 1998 as a fourth-grade teacher at Sienna Crossing Elementary School. He taught there for nine years until being named assistant

principal at Highlands Elementary School in 2006. Three years later, he joined Lantern Lane Elementary in the same capacity.

Bellard says he is thrilled to be joining the Heritage Rose staff and the school’s vision for academic success mirrors his own philosophy.

“Throughout my teaching career I have embraced the ideal that each and every child deserves an opportunity to grow to their greatest capacity,” Bellard said.

Nancy Sanchez, who joined the school in 2014 as an assistant principal, said she was very excited to be working with both Williams and Bellard.

“I’m very excited for the coming school year,” Sanchez said. “It’s been a blessing, if parents could see what is going on behind the scenes they would be just as excited.”

to gamble with their futures. April was so excited to realize this, that she ended up attending every meeting that week. As soon as the week ended, April resigned from her law firm and set forth to earn her insurance and security licenses. She spent two years in Mississippi learning from her father. In 2010, April moved to Texas and opened up the Roberts Wealth Management Sugar Land office.

pril Roberts laughs as she tells me the story of how she became a financial advisor. She has a law degree from Notre Dame.

I am curious what caused her to change from a legal career to one in finance. April explains that her father, Paul Roberts, “tricked her into the family business” and that “life is full of surprises.” Moving back to the United States after her marriage to an Italian executive fell apart, April said that she saw an opportunity to change her life by helping people. “Immediately, I started practicing law again,” she explains.

“It’s what I was trained to do and how I could financially recover from my divorce.

But, I knew that, eventually, I wanted to change careers to follow my passion for helping people. The tradition in my family is and always has been to own a business that served people. I knew that I wanted to join that tradition, but I just didn’t know how quite yet.”

Returning home to Mississippi, she was offered a position with a New Orleans firm to help handle their federal court cases tried in Mississippi. April continues to explain, “I moved back to Mississippi to be close to my parents during this difficult time, and I have to admit that I felt pretty lost.

My parents had been married since they were 19 and 21, so I never imagined that I would end up divorced.” She explained, “My grandfathers, one who owned a paint

contracting business and the other owned a dry cleaners, had always taught me that hard work solves most issues. So, I chose to jump into work to find my grounding again.” After her first case settled, April’s grandmother asked her to chaperone her godchild, Leah, on a trip to Hawaii to see her sister and brother-in-law who were stationed there with the Army. When April returned to a low case load, her father, Paul, asked if she wanted to go with him to Florida for a financial conference.

April smiles as she exclaims, “Two free trips in a row? I couldn’t believe my luck! I had ‘earned’ most of my vacations since the age of 12. Little did I know that my dad had ulterior motives. I fully intended to spend my week on the beach and shopping, but my dad played on my first-born guilt and asked me to attend ‘a few’ meetings with him.” The first two days of the conference, it rained, so April went to every meeting with her dad. She tells me that she was stunned. “I realized that I had no idea what my dad actually did for a living. I always thought he was a stock broker and bought stocks and bonds for clients. Being adverse to gambling with my money, I didn’t find this career appealing for myself and had turned down many requests from my dad to join his business.” But, what she saw at that conference changed her mind. It showed her how her dad had found a way to plan and prepare for retirement so that his clients didn’t need

Today, April and her team at Roberts Wealth Management work with many retirees and pre-retirees who are concerned about running out of money in their lifetime. She says that “many of our clients are first concerned with insuring that they don’t run out of money, and secondly concerned with leaving behind most of their assets to their families, rather than the IRS.” This concern may be rooted in a fear of the stock market, concern over long term care and medical costs, or, paying excess amounts to the IRS. Their concern can manifest itself in many ways — but April assures each concern can all be handled with proper planning. As Paul Roberts, founder of Roberts Wealth Management, says “we’re into planning, not predictions.” About half of the families Roberts Wealth Management serves are retired, while others are planning to retire shortly. Whether they are retired or planning to retire, most of the families who visit Roberts Wealth Management are concerned about the impact of the market on retirement income and generating sufficient income throughout their retirement. April explains that they work best with families who want a reasonable rate of return, security and simplicity. April finds that most of the families they serve are also concerned about maintaining their dignity and independence, as well as the independence of their children if they become ill. “There is nothing I love more than helping my clients eliminate their concerns and work toward their goals for retirement,” April says. She continues, “one of my greatest blessings is that over the years, we have put together a team who mirrors these values.”

A MONUMENTAL YEAR April took that monumental trip to Florida with her dad in July of 2008.

2008 was not the best year to become a financial advisor. April tells me, “You can imagine how all of my lawyer friends told me over the remainder of that year that I was making a huge mistake. How could I leave a successful law practice to become a financial advisor — especially in a year where we were experiencing the most catastrophic economy that most people could remember? What they didn’t realize was that this time was when families needed their financial advisor the most.

Dad and I fondly remember working 13 hours per day during that period. We fell asleep every night exhausted but satisfied

that we were making a difference, one family at a time. I quickly fell in love with what we did and realized that it was my true calling.” In addition to being a financial counselor to her clients, April also owns her own business, as each of her family members do. April explains, “We don’t work for anyone else. At the end of the day, paying the rent and the payroll falls to us, as does managing our teams and operating the business. Owning your own business can be tough — it’s a constant balancing act. When I am having a particularly challenging day, I think back to

2008 and remind myself why we do what we do. It’s funny because most financial advisors cringe when they think of 2008, but my dad taught me that difficult times are when our clients need us most. I’ll never forget that.”

April looks back on 2008 fondly for many reasons. First, it’s the last time that she was able to take two personal vacations in a year. Second, it’s the year that she found her calling in life. She is grateful every day that her father did not give up on his mission to get her, her brother, Paul, and her sister, Summer, into his business.

She also laughs that her dad has no intention to retire. April explains, “for the Roberts family, this business is our passion.

There is nothing better than getting a hug from a satisfied client or having them thank us for taking care of their family.”

She concludes our interview by saying, “I haven’t been blessed with my own family so I love that I get to take care of hundreds of adopted families every day.” For Roberts Wealth Management, this tradition of taking care of families will continue for many years and generations to come.

Houston Community College holds ceremonial beam signing at Stafford Campus Armed with Sharpies and a feeling of excitement, Houston Community College (HCC) administrators and staff joined the construction crew and project managers for a ceremonial beam signing at the site of the new workforce training center on the Stafford Campus.

The 57,000 square-foot, energy efficient facility, will house advanced manufacturing and robotics classes as well as laboratories for welding and pipefitting.

This training center, which is expected to be LEED Silver certified, will meet the industry need for skilled workers. Once the building is complete, the thin steel plate with the signatures will be placed permanently in the front hall above the tile in the ceiling.

The facility is set to open in Spring 2016.

Clements graduate featured on “America’s Next Top Model”

By Michael Sudhalter msudhalter@fortbendstar.com Former supermodel Tyra Banks helped select some of the top up-and-coming models in the United States for a television show that she presents and produces.

One of the honorees was Hadassah Richardson, a 23-year-old Sugar Land native who graduated from Clements High in 2010.

“Modeling has always been a dream of mine,” Richardson said. “I’m finally pursuing it, and it’s a huge milestone to make it on the show. It was an incredible experience.

It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Richardson originally applied to be on the show when she was 18 but didn’t make it beyond the audition process.

She was pleasantly surprised when she received the call a few months ago.

Richardson said few models are shorter than 5-foot-9, but she has overcome the odds at 5-foot-7.

A graduate of the University of Houston, Richardson recently moved to Miami, Fla. and will travel between there and Los Angeles in her modeling career.

Blaze Pizza opens in Sugar Land

Blaze Pizza now open in Sugar Land.

Blaze Pizza, 16100 Kensington Drive in Sugar Land, has 68 restaurants in 18 states and Washington D.C. and is partially owned by basketball superstar LeBron James.

The local franchise owners are Sugar Land residents Keshuv and Annie Aggarwal, who already own more than 40 Subway franchises in the Houston area and upstate New York.

The Aggarwals have an agreement to build more Blaze Pizza locations in the Houston area.

Blaze has been called the “Chipotle of Pizza” because it is great food at an affordable price.

Five dollars buys a cheese pizza, and $7.65 buys a build-your-own, with as many toppings as you’d like.

There are 45 employees at the Sugar Land location, with five stations – dough, cheese, meats, veggie and baking. And the pizza is ready in 180 seconds.

Last week, Blaze debuted with an outsidethe-door line for its free pizza days, which included a disc jockey outside.

The Aggarwals considered the opening a success and look forward to seeing the same customers in the door soon.

St. Laurence donates to local teen Autism Advocates Hope For Three’s Teen Huddle excited accepted a $2,000 donation from St. Laurence Catholic Church. The generous award will allow the teen advocates to continue their efforts of providing Parent Time Out and Sibling Sessions for families living with autism.

Both programs, provided during the school year, rotate every other month. Sibling sessions are designated for the child/children in the family that is not on the spectrum.

Taking care of a child with autism can be time consuming, so much that it is hard to find enough hours in the day to give enough attention to their siblings. Parents Time Out allows parents three hours of adult time of their choosing.

Since the annual survey launched in 1990, MD Anderson has been named one of the top two cancer hospitals in the United States. It has ranked first 11 times in the past 14 years.

These specialty rankings are particularly notable because they include care provided at general hospitals across the nation, not just cancer centers. Both of these specialties have been consistently ranked high for the past two decades.

The survey also named MD Anderson as “high performing” in Urology, meeting the survey’s standards for excellence.

A new art approach to story telling by Sugar Land fine artist

Jerry Poscovsky has turned the graphic novel upside down with a fine art approach to illustrated stories written by the artist/ writer.

Lyon; an original story by Mr. Poscovsky, is an original hand painted book painted through his unique art interpretation of photographs he produced to illustrate the story. Mr. Poscovsky casted a local actor/model ( Mickey Caddell ) to pose as the Lyon. Mr. Poscovsky captures his photo images using Polaroids and traditional photographs.

Once the image is captured Mr. Poscovsky paints on top of the actual photo image to look inside the photo and interpret it with his artist heart. Mr. Poscovsky says “I capture that one moment in time with a photographer’s eye and then I use my heart as an artist to look inside and find its inner story.” By using photographs as his base he uses the real light of the moment to light his art interpretation.

Lyon is a story of an ageing super hero’s hatred for the secret world he lives in and the demons he faces while living in the shadows of the traditional world. Each image reflects the inner pain and loneness of living a secret light.

The book features only one character; Lyon; and the emotional and tragic world he lives in.

Jerry Poscovsky is a native Texan growing up in Houston. He now lives in Sugar Land, Texas with his wife Vicki. Mr. Poscovsky has two sons; Jason and Michael.

Poscovsky career includes over 40 years in animation, illustration, fine art, photography, film production, broadcasting, publishing and advertising.

In addition Mr. Poscovsky has an extensive career in voice over in commercial work including projects featuring Steve Harvey and George Foreman.

S & P Awards City of Richmond AA- Rating The City of Richmond received strong news closing out July 2015 when they found Standard and Poor’s Ratings Service (S & P) had raised the City’s longterm rating to AA- on their parity general obligation bonds.

The upgrade reflects the improvement in the city’s budgetary flexibility to a level considered very strong.

At the same time the S & P assigned its ‘AA-‘ long-term rating to the City of Richmond’s series 2015 combination tax and revenue certificates of obligation, also known as bonds.

Proceeds from these bonds will be used for water and wastewater system improvements.

At a special session on Monday August 3rd, Joe Morrow, Senior Vice President of First Southwest told commissioners “It was quite a feat getting into the double A category”.

Mr. Morrow attributed this accomplishment to several factors recognized by S & P: Strong management –good financial policies and practices; Strong budget-

ary performance- operating surplus in the general fund; and Very Strong budgetary flexibility- fund balances in 2014 and 2015 as a % of operating expenditures. A ‘AA’ rating is defined as only differing from the highest-rated obligations (AAA rating) only to a small degree.

According to Standard & Poor’s credit analyst Sarah Smaardyk, “The upgrade reflects the improvement in the city’s budgetary flexibility to levels we consider very strong from strong.

In addition, the upgrade reflects the formalization of financial policies, providing additional strength to the city’s financial practices.”

The rating comes just as the City of Richmond has approved authorizing the issuance of combination Tax and Revenue Certificates of Obligation, or Bonds.
