Alimohammad & Zafar, PLLC offers service beyond the rehtoric

W

ith the 2016 presidential election in full swing there has been an abundance of rhetoric about banning Muslim immigrants and building a wall along the border with Mexico. Rehan Alimohammad is well aware of all the threats and promises made during the campaign. He is also well aware that even though the President of the United States is considered to be the most powerful person in the world that even the President is powerless to enact laws. That literally takes an act of Congress. Alimohammad is an attorney from Sugar Land who specializes in immigration and tax law. He is practically peerless when it comes to understanding issues of immigration and the laws that apply. He can be heard on local radio waves talking about immigration issues and he has published numerous articles on the subject. He does those things because he cares. Helping people and bettering the community is what drives Alimohammad and his partner Tariq Zafar at their law firm, Alimohammad & Zafar, PLLC. They, along with Senior Associate Farrah Najmuddin Lang, are local attorneys who are committed to serving people in their community. Whether they are working with the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, speaking at a community event, or volunteering with a bar association or economic development group, the attorneys stay busy giving back to the community that has given so much to them. “Service to people is the driving force behind everything this firm does,” Alimohammad said. While serving as the legal member for His Highness Shia Imami Ismaili Council for the Southwest United States, and

elected legal counsel for the Houston Asian Junior Chamber of Commerce, Alimohammad organized wills workshops throughout the state from 2009-2012, which produced more than 1,000 free wills, leading to a savings of around a half million dollars for the public. For these efforts, Alimohammad received an award in 2011 from the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of the Five Outstanding Young Texans, as well as a proclamation from the mayor of Sugar Land congratulating him on “his dedication and service to the community.” Zafar and Lang are equally committed to the community. Through their work and their volunteerism they, along with Alimohammad, strive to help people reach their goals and achieve their dreams. Quite often that dream is U.S. citizenship, the launch of a business or just finding peace in times of domestic unrest. Not only are they fervent servants of the community, they are also mentors and teachers. Alimohammad has high praise for his mentors when he was starting out and believes in helping other attorneys get their start. It is his belief that if even a potential competitor is better it means that the clients – and by extension the community – will receive better service. You can read about the wonderful work the attorneys at Alimohammad and Zafar, PLLC do inside this issue. They are more than just lawyers, they’re lawyers who care and that can make all the difference in the world. Sincerely, Joe Southern Editor, Fort Bend/Katy Business Journal

Take a peek inside the new Smart Financial Centre Performing arts center to bring major acts to Sugar Land By Joe Southern jsouthern@fortbendstar.com

T

here are very few places in the world where people are as excited about the venue as they are the performance

inside. The Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land is potentially one of those venues. “In the music industry, everyone’s talking about the building,” said ACE SL President Gary Becker. “Nationally we’re getting a lot of good vibe from the agents and the artists and the managers about this new building … and it’s going to be really something special for them to play.” ACE SL oversees development and operation of the center in a public-private partnership with the City of Sugar Land. Becker has been working on the project for seven years and is eager to talk about the $85 million, 6,400-seat theater that is scheduled to open in mid-January with performances by comedian Jerry Seinfeld and former Eagles frontman Don Henley. He said there are about a half-dozen major events being scheduled for the first two months the Smart Financial Centre is open. Becker recently gave the Fort Bend Star a tour of the 200,000-square-foot facility that is currently under construction. “Inside you will see a 6,400-seat, proscenium theater that is capable through moving walls and curtains to become a 3,000-seat theater, a 4,300-seat theater, a 4,600-seat theater and then full house will be 6,400 seats,” he said. Becker said the ability to adjust the seating capacity helps maintain the intimacy of the environment. “When you’re sitting in that environment, you won’t even know there’s other seats. It’ll be totally blocked off. So if you’re watching a show and there’s 3,000 people in there, it’s going to feel like a full house,” he said. “By moving the walls or raising the curtains, that’s how we add people. “You feel like you’re in this intimate environment watching a show and it makes

the experience for the fans so much better and the experience for the artist so much better. Our goal is whether you’re an artist, whether you’re a crewmember or a fan, your experience inside this building is going to be great,” he said. Becker said one of the key attractions to the theater are the mid-level suites. “We have 14, 20-person suites – prime location, best seats in the house,” he said. Smart Financial Centre is a mid-sized entertainment venue that is designed for comfort. “The magic is when you go in you don’t feel like you’re in a cut-down version of the Toyota Center. You’re not sitting under a tent at Cynthia Woods,” he said. Becker is quick to rattle off statistics and information about the building. “It’s got a production capability of hanging 210,000 pounds over the stage. It can hang 80,000 pounds in front of the proscenium,” he said. The 80-foot by 50-foot stage is fronted by a hydraulic orchestra pit that reaches four levels from underground storage to the performance level, floor level and a 14-inch recess below floor level to accommodate

crowds standing in front of the permanent seats. “We’ve got six spotlights. We’ve got two in-house LED screens, stage left and right. We’ve got four camera positions; two permanent in the house and two portable in the barricade. We’ve got a delay house sound system and a L-Acoustic II sound system,” Becker said. Walking through the facility, Becker skirted around hundreds of workers laboring to have the facility ready to occupy in less than four months. The task seems daunting, but Becker is confident they will be ready on time. “We have nine dressing rooms – all ADA-equipped – all of them have restrooms and all of them are ADA equipped, we have several production offices, we have a wardrobe room with washers and dryers, we’ve got plenty of spaces to store cases, a big crew room area to feed everybody,” he said. There is even when Becker calls a “diva room” which is almost like a hotel suite for superstar performers. SMART FINANCIAL CENTER, continued on page 8

Outside the building will be significant parking space. “We can park 14 vehicles, whether it’s trucks or buses, so we have a four-truck dock and we have parking at the artists’ entrance,” Becker said. “We have a artists entrance where we can park three buses, limousines and sedans there and they’ll go in their own private entrance. We have 2,500 parking spaces for the audience.” In addition to the parking, Sugar Land is building a plaza to compliment the center. “The City of Sugar Land has built a 2½ to three-acre park outside the front door, so there will be water features, there will be park-like atmosphere, lots of trees, lots of lights, very inviting, very nice,” Becker said. “It will be open 24-7-365, so it’ll actually be a City of Sugar Land park. It’s going to make a beautiful entrance to the venue. It will have an area of about 10,000 square feet so that if we want to do a pre-show concert or pre-show event of any sort we can do that right there next to the

building.” Located off of U.S. Highway 59 and University Boulevard, Smart Financial Centre is situated on a portion of 38.5 acres of city property. Its location is central to its potential success, according to Becker. He said surveys show that people from the southwest side of the Houston metro area are not traveling in significant numbers to see shows in The Woodlands or downtown Houston. “This whole side of Houston, 2-2 ½ million people … can come to this venue and they’re 20 minutes away,” he said. “The Smart Financial Centre is a game changer for our community,” said Keri Schmidt, president and CEO of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. “This stateof-the-art facility is going to allow our region to enjoy first class entertainment in our back yard.” According to Jennifer A. May, executive director of Business and Governmental Affairs for the City of Sugar Land, the facility will provide significant economic impact locally. “Regarding the economic impact, estimates show the venue will provide an

annual benefit to the community of more than $26 million over 30 years and attract more than 260,000 paid attendees annually,” she said. In a joint statement with Mayor Joe Zimmerman, May touted the process and funding mechanisms that made the center a reality. “The Smart Financial Centre at Sugar Land is an exciting new venue, not only for the city, but for the entire region,” they said. “It is an important part of the city’s decade-long strategy that involved extensive citizen input to provide unique regional destinations for residents and visitors, alike. The benefits of this project are significant from growing and expanding our sales tax and economic base, to promoting capital investment, creating new jobs, enhancing educational and cultural arts opportunities, increasing tourism and attracting local and regional visitors. “It is important to note that, no general fund tax dollars are being used to pay for this project. Instead, it is being funded by using a unique package of special funding sources including a $10 million equity contribution and substantial rent payments from our venue partner ACE, as well as revenue sources restricted for economic development and tourism purposes only. The bottom line is that our taxpayers will receive the benefit of this destination venue while the city maintains one of the lowest tax rates in the state of Texas,” the said. Becker estimates there will be 105 performances a year at the center. “We’re going to do church services. We’re going to do commencements; so Fort Bend ISD is used to going to the Toyota Center and now they’re going to come here,” he said. There are other uses for the building as well. “People can rent out for corporate meetings, they can rent the lobby space for a seated dinner space for between 350 and 400 people,” Becker said. “The versatility of the building not only for the performance side, but from a corporate side is there.” Ground was broken on the facility in December 2014. A year later they celebrated the steel topping off party. Becker hopes to be able to hold an open house for the community this fall and have a soft-opening event like a school concert or something to help them get the facility ready for opening night in January. “It’s first class in everything they do from the building to the plaza out front to the marquee,” he said.

The Cleaning Authority of Fort Bend donates more than 2,000 pounds of food

T

hroughout the month of July, The Cleaning Authority of Fort Bend collected 2,112 pounds of food for the Richmond/Rosenberg Helping Hands. The collection took place as part of the recently launched The Cleaning Authority CARES initiative, which the Columbia, MD, based brand put in place to help fight hunger across the country. The food that the Fort Bend office collected landed them with a top ten ranking among over 150 offices that participated. In total, the brand collected and donated 13,883 grocery bags of food, equaling 120,622 pounds across its franchisee system. “We are extremely grateful for our customers’ generosity to have donated so

much food in an effort to reduce childhood hunger in our local community,” said Fort Bend’s owner, Jim Hilburn. “It means a lot to be such a large contributor to the Richmond/Rosenberg Helping Hands organization and put a dent in childhood hunger this summer.” Through the initiative, cleaners from the Fort Bend office left brown paper bags in the residences they clean with a note explaining the program and requesting a donation from clients to help locals in need. Due to the huge success, The Cleaning Authority plans to hold another donation period toward the end of 2016 and continue building the positive impact of The Cleaning Authority CARES in the upcoming years. “Whenever we can make a difference in

Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital says goodbye to retiring therapy dog Gracie

E

mployees, physicians, and volunteers from Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital came together recently for a special farewell ceremony to wish the hospital’s first therapy dog, Gracie, a happy retirement. Gracie is an Australian Shepherd who first started visiting patients in 2007 with the “Tender Loving K9’s” program. Unfortunately, arthritis is making it too difficult for Gracie to continue visiting with patients and recently her owner announced her retirement. In Gracie’s honor, Memorial Hermann Katy hosted a retirement party to send Gracie off with a tail-wagging good time. “Gracie has been a bright light at our hospital for nearly a decade. Not only does she provide comfort and encouragement to patients, but she also serves as a stress reliever for many of our employees, physicians and volunteers. We want her to know she is loved and she will be missed,”

says Heather Rojas, manager of volunteer services at Memorial Hermann Katy. Gracie holds a special honor as the first dog in the pet therapy program, Tender Loving K9’s. The non-profit was founded in 2007 by Gracie’s owner, Sharon Evans. The animals undergo a special certification process before they can visit hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities in the Katy area and beyond. Evans says retiring Gracie was a tough decision. “Gracie enjoys visiting patients as much as patients enjoy seeing her. I know she’s going to miss stopping by the hospital, but she’s just not as spry as she once was,” Evans said. Gracie will continue living with Evans during her retirement. During the retirement celebration, Memorial Hermann Katy had special treats for Gracie and the other therapy dogs in attendance. The hospital also presented Evans with a framed picture of Gracie.

the community, we are excited to take full advantage of that opportunity,” said The Cleaning Authority Chief Development Officer Iric Wexler. “The Cleaning Authority was founded on the principle of creating a positive impact on the quality of life and while we do that for our clients we also make it a point to do it for the community as a whole.”

Dance of the Sleeping Beauty Russian Grand Ballet returns to Stafford to invite us to the world’s favorite fairytale

S

ee the world from your seat in the Stafford Centre as the fall season 2016 offerings take on an international flair, such as classical presentation of the Sleeping Beauty by the Russian Grand Ballet October 7. Everyone can recall the main Sleeping Beauty theme and the Waltz theme. From young to old, many generations have waited for the moment of true love, when Sleeping Beauty opens her eyes, awakened by a kiss from her prince. It is a beautiful fairy tale, also featuring every single ballet step in the syllabus. Recognized worldwide, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty was originally performed in the Mariinsky Theatre in St.Petersburg in 1890. It is known as one of the Russian “Big Three” ballets with The Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Written in 40 days, a wonderful union of a Tchaikovsky’s genius talent and no less talented choreography by Marius Petipa made “Sleeping Beauty” a crown of world ballet. The Sleeping Beauty presents many challenges for both the principal dancers and soloists, and plenty of active choreography for the rest of the ballet cast. Aurora is one of the greatest female roles, as it demands tremendous athletic ability as

well as extremely clean technique. Princess Aurora’s role will be performed by The Honored artist of Ukraine Olga Kifyak, with The Honored Artist of Ukraine Eugeniy Svetlitsa as Prince Désiré. Speaking of international flair, it is also worth mentioning that Russian Grand Ballet’s troupe is rather diverse itself. The Queen is played by Armenia native - Stella Chernova and one of the Fairies (Akari Sinyavskaya) comes from Japan. Russian Grand Ballet’s Ballet Master, Honored Artist of Russia, Vladimir Troshchenko, is highly dedicated to the timeless tradition of classical Russian Ballet.

“Stafford’s blooming art scene makes it the perfect location for the Russian Grand Ballet’s Sleeping Beauty performance. We are happy to be back” says Troshchenko. The troupe will perform the work as part of their tour of 35 U.S. cities this year. In an effort to keep the dancers fit, the performers train daily, even while on worldwide tours. Keeping joints healthy with free joint pain seminar

R

egular exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are key to preventing one of the most common medical conditions, osteoarthritis. Today, more than 27 million Americans suffer from osteoarthritis, which is the progressive breakdown of cartilage in the knees, hips and shoulders. The breakdown causes joint pain and stiffness, and can ultimately impact an individual’s mobility and make every-day activities difficult and painful. Ashvin K. Dewan, M.D., a knee and shoulder surgeon with Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine, will be giving a free seminar on joint pain and preventing osteoarthritis on Sept. 21 at 6 p.m. in the Brazos Pavilion Conference Center at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. He says it’s possible to keep your cartilage strong and resilient by being active throughout your

lifetime. 20s and 30s: Protect your joints “Individuals in their 20s and 30s should exercise regularly and lift weights to strengthen the muscles that support joints,” Dewan said. “Maintain a Ashvin K. Dewan, healthy weight M.D., knee and and make sure shoulder surgeon you have a balanced diet that includes the proper amounts of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D to support bone and joint health.” Though many people are fit at this age, those who are overweight or have experienced

a severe injury within the past 10 years may begin to develop early signs of osteoarthritis, including joint pain and stiffness. 40s and 50s: Keep a healthy weight The toll of earlier injuries or joint damage related to excess weight over time starts to mount. You may notice creaking or popping in your knees when climbing stairs, stiffness for a few minutes after waking, or a dull ache in your hips after exercise. Weight loss, physical therapy or anti-inflammatory medications may alleviate these mild symptoms. “Every extra pound gained puts four pounds of additional pressure on your knees and can further exacerbate osteoarthritis symptoms,” Dewan said. “Help your joints last as long as possible by eating right, staying active and maintaining a healthy weight.” 60s, 70s and beyond: Stay active As you age, chances are greater that you’ll develop osteoarthritis in your hips, knees or shoulders. “Genetics, past injuries, excess

weight and physical inactivity all play a role in its development and severity,” Dewan said. Severe symptoms, like constant pain and very limited mobility, aren’t uncommon, but anti-inflammatory medication, weight loss, physical therapy and exercise can help. “Even in late age, losing weight can help decrease joint pain in the knees and hips, while regular stretching and strengthening can help lubricate hip, knee and shoulder joints and increase flexibility,” Dewan said. Unfortunately, some people will reach a point where the pain is unbearable. “In the most severe cases, osteoarthritis can make it hard to walk, lift or reach, or even be selfsufficient,” Dewan said. “In these cases, joint replacement can provide pain relief, improve range of motion and mobility, and restore independence. Joint replacement is a good option to have down the road in a worst-case scenario, but the opportunity to decrease your chances of needing one is in your hands today.” To schedule an appointment online with Ashvin K. ALIMOHAMMAD AND ZAFAR, PLLC DRIVEN BY COMMITMENT TO COMMUNITY

C

ommunity service, mentorship, informative, longevity and a sense of community are not often words associated with a law firm, but Alimohammad and Zafar, PLLC isn’t an average law firm. All three attorneys at Alimohammad and Zafar, PLLC were born and raised in Houston and Sugar Land, and graduated from University of Houston Law Center, and as a result, they all have a strong sense of community, and spend many hours giving back

to the local community and the state of Texas in a countless number of ways. “We’re attorneys from the community giving back to the community,” said partner Rehan Alimohammad. “We’re from around here and we want to give back.” They have given hundreds of hours of free legal services on behalf of Fort Bend Lawyers Care, Brazos Bend Guardianship Services, YMCA international services, the University of Houston Law Center immigration clinic, and the Houston Volunteer Lawyers Program.

Partner Tariq Zafar serves on the board for Accesshealth and the Alliance for Multicultural Services. “We are fortunate to have someone with his skills and interest. His passion for the Fort Bend community has been apparent,” said Cindy Reaves, Development Officer for Accesshealth. “We are blessed to have someone of Tariq’s expertise, experience and commitment on our board,” added Layla Misgina, chair of the board for the Alliance. Senior Associate Farrah Najmuddin Lang volunteers with Crosspoint Baptist Church, the American Heart and Stroke Association; Texas Children’s Hospital; Special Olympics of Texas; the Junior League of Houston; and Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center. With an office directly across the street from the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce, one will often see one of the attorneys there. “Our chamber relies on Alimohammad and Zafar, PLLC. Recently they helped us navigate through a significant transaction with a global events company. Our legal representation was exceptional every step of the way,” said Kerri Schmidt, president and CEO of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. Alimohammad is legal counsel for the chamber as well as serving on the board of directors, executive committee, chamber partners committee, governance committee, and the diversity action team. Having parents who immigrated from different countries, the attorneys also are very involved in helping other immigrant communities. Partners Alimohammad and Zafar have organized and given countless seminars in immigration law and estate planning in many different places of worship throughout Texas. They have appeared regularly since 2003 on community radio stations to give updates on the law and answer legal questions, and have written more than 300 articles in community papers doing the same. While serving as the legal member for His Highness Shia Imami Ismaili Council for the Southwest United States, and elected legal counsel for the Houston Asian Junior Chamber of Commerce, Rehan organized wills workshops throughout the state from 20092012, which produced over 1,000 free wills, leading to a savings of around a half million dollars for the public. For these efforts, Alimohammad received an award in 2011 from the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce as one of the Five Outstanding Young Texans, as well as a Proclamation from the Office of the Mayor of Sugar Land congratulating him on “his

dedication and service to the community.” Another form of service to the community the firm is vested in is mentoring other attorneys. “Mentoring attorneys is part of our responsibility,” Alimohammad said. “We would not be here were it not for the mentors we’ve had. It not only helps the attorney, but also the public because it raises the quality of the legal assistance they receive.” He serves as a mentor for the professionalism committee for the Houston Bar Association as well as several other attorneys. Besides serving as a mentor on an individual basis, Alimohammad is also busy giving presentations to bar associations and other groups on immigration law, tax law and the importance of diversity. Working with other attorneys to help other lawyers and the community is something the firm gives great importance. Alimohammad and Lang have served on the following committees for the Houston Bar Association: Communities in schools, gender fairness, Special Olympics, administration of justice, and minority opportunities in the legal profession. Alimohammad said one of the best experiences he has had was volunteering in “Teach Texas” to teach seventh graders about the federal and state legal systems at a middle school in Katy, where he resides. Laura Gibson, the past president of the Houston Bar Association said, “Rehan has been tireless in his volunteer efforts for the HBA. Rehan is a true

jewel in the crown of the Houston legal community.” The executive director for the State Bar of Texas, Michelle Hunter, commented, “Rehan brings valuable perspective to the State Bar Board of Directors with his experience in immigration, tax, and family law. He has been active in state and local bar volunteer service for some time, so it’s clear he is committed to our mission of serving our members and the public. Whether it’s working on a board committee or speaking to community groups about State Bar programs and services, Rehan is quick to dive in and get to work on issues before the bar.” He serves with the State Bar of Texas as minority director, on the Executive Committee, advisor to the Laws Relating to Immigration and Nationality committee, advisor to the Immigration and Nationality Section, and on the Texas Minority Counsel Program Steering Committee. He also is working on the first People’s Law School as first vice president of the Katy Bar Association. Each attorney focuses on two areas of law with Zafar focusing on corporate law and estate planning; Lang focusing on family law and civil litigation; and Alimohammad handling immigration and tax law. “It allows us to excel in our fields while allowing the firm to serve our clients in more ways,” Alimohammad said. It’s about finding peace in the storm and enabling her clients to move forward with a new chapter of life. “I like that they can live life happily now because of something I helped them to do,” she said. The firm is a member of the Katy Economic Development Council (EDC), where Alimohammad serves on the Leadership Task Force. Lance LaCour, president and CEO for the Katy EDC said, “Alimohammad is an outstanding and valuable committee member. He also works diligently with the other committee members on issues, projects and takes that are helping shape our visions for the Katy area.” Zafar, who served as general counsel to State Rep. Garnet F. Coleman and did transactional work at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, helps his clients in a variety of business transactions in corporate law including buying and selling businesses; mergers and acquisitions; reviewing contracts; and purchasing and selling real estate. In helping clients with estate planning and probate, Zafar said, “I like the fact that I have the ability and privilege to better peoples’ lives every day I come to work. We’ve formed strong bonds with the clients that have been with us for years because we have made them very comfortable in putting their trust in us. We take the term ‘counselors’ in ‘attorneys and counselors at law’ very seriously and do our best to break negative stereotypes of attorneys every day.” Zafar is a graduate of the Fort Bend Chamber’s Leadership Forum Class of 2014 and is in the 2017 class for Central Fort Bend Chamber’s Leadership. Lang focuses on family law where she can help people who are often at the lowest time in

law, Alimohammad said immigration law can be rewarding and frustrating at the same time. “I get calls from people all the time that I can’t help. I’m not going to take a case where there is no benefit for the client,” he said. Because his firm works with multiple nationalities, there are three languages spoken besides English: Spanish, Hindi and Urdu. And being a CPA before he became a lawyer allows Alimohammad to help those who have an IRS lien or levy or need help dealing with a revenue officer, and he has trained over 300 lawyers, CPA’s, and enrolled agents in how to deal with the IRS. He is a graduate of the Fort Bend Leadership for Nonprofit excellence and is in the 2017 class for Fort Bend Leadership Forum. As much as this firm with 30-plus years of combined experience does for the community and the state, the attorneys always feel they can do more. “Service to people is the driving force behind everything this firm does,” Alimohammad said. New SMSD teachers bring real world experience to the classroom By Stafford MSD Communications

T

he Stafford Municipal School District’s mission statement is to ensure that every student graduates ready for college or a career without remediation. Two of the new teachers at the Stafford College & Career Center, a state-of-the-art component of Stafford High School, are instructors who have spent most of their careers working in the field that they’re about to teach this year. Tawne Blackful is the new health sciences academy teacher. As a registered nurse she brings 30 years of professional nursing experience, plus teaching experience at the college and high school levels. “I am very impressed with the Stafford College & Career Center,” Blackful said. “We want to make the students aware of the opportunities that await them in the health sciences profession. There are a lot of jobs in health sciences, and that field continues to grow.” Stafford MSD students currently have opportunities to intern with area hospitals, but Blackful is working with Stafford College & Career Center Director Deborah Nordt to create a program where students could earn a Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) certification as they graduate from high school. That program would create partnerships with area nursing homes and hospitals, so students could fulfill the required 40 hours of clinical practice. “A CNA certification is the basis for health care careers, and it will prepare the students for any of the health careers they may choose,” said Blackful, who has a master’s in education from Sam Houston State. Richard Nevins, a Houston native who played basketball for the University of Texas in the 1970s, initially planned to become a teacher. He decided, instead to earn degrees in management (from UT) and accounting (from the University of Houston) and embark upon a business career. He always wondered, “what if?” After nearly 40 years as either a chief financial officer (CFO), marketing professional or Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Nevins has decided to combine the best of both worlds. He will utilize his business experience as Stafford College & Career Center’s new

business marketing academy teacher. “I wanted to make a change and go into an industry where I felt I could make a bigger impact,” Nevins said. Both of the new teachers plan to treat their classrooms as simulations for the real world – a hospital and a boardroom, respectively. “I’m going to treat my class like a board meeting,” said Nevins, who plans to enhance the school’s DECA Chapter, a student business organization. “One of the things that really impressed me about Stafford MSD was the fact that they take business seriously. It is not simply an elective at Stafford MSD, but a field of study.” Nevins, an experienced basketball coach, will teach principles of business, marketing, finance, sport management/marketing and entrepreneurship. He will also coach the Stafford Middle School eighth grade girls basketball team.
