Hello Lisa, I just wanted to drop a line to you about my recent experience with your magazine. I was looking to place ads with several magazines and I spoke to a lot of people that day either associated with publishing or selling it, and they were all short and abrupt. My experience with Fort Bend Focus was exceptional, from the person answering the phone to Jessica Kij, who was dealing with the deadline, yet very pleasant, helped with the whole process and got it done with a smile over the phone. I am impressed with your establishment and plan to do business in the future. Just thought you should know in a busy world we live in. Thank you Jessica, and thanks to the publishers at Fort Bend Focus.
Dear Patti, All I can say is “wow!” The article looks wonderful and I especially love what you did with the red and black boxes at the top! It really is terrific. Thank you for putting us in Fort Bend Focus magazine. That was a very nice surprise! As always, though, thank you for your support. You really have been there from the very beginning, and Mandy and I can’t thank you enough for everything. You’re the best! With kind regards, as always, Tina Pennington (a.k.a Red)

2011 Chili Cook Off: Grace Hosen, Chad Smith, Julie Lorey, Don Kerstetter, Manny Sosa, Ken Kelley & Bill Elbert.
COVER STORY
By Brian Simmons
W
hile in college, Don Kerstetter wasn’t sure what he wanted to do and mulled over the possibility of being a lawyer or even a professional martial artist. More than twenty years later, the Classic Chevrolet of Sugar Land owner has changed a city’s attitude about the Chevy brand and is known throughout Fort Bend County for his community involvement and charitable contributions. Now, he finds himself as Fort Bend Focus Magazine’s Man of the Year. Classic Chevrolet of Sugar Land, which opened in 2009, is in the top 20 in new car sales in the United States, and the parts department ranks in the top five. The dealership donates tens of thousands of dollars to various charities, schools and organizations every year. Kerstetter has been a fixture in the community since he and his family – wife Jackie and their children, Grace and Jacob – moved to the area in 2009. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Fort Bend

Chamber of Commerce and the Literacy Council of Fort Bend. “Don has gone above and beyond what is expected of him,” Sugar Land Mayor Jimmy Thompson said. “He has been extremely involved and supportive of the community.” As with any new business, Classic Chevrolet received many requests for help and funds quickly after opening its doors. Kerstetter sought guidance from The George Foundation’s Grant Officer Dee Koch, an authority on knowing when and how to give back. “I said, ‘You’ve got to have a plan,’” Koch said. “Before you know it, you can feel overwhelmed.” Kerstetter’s plan involves helping as many people as possible. “As far as I know, he’s never said, ‘No, we can’t help you.’” Koch said. “He’s opened his heart and encourages his staff to volunteer as well. He leads by example, and it’s not just him. His wife and children are involved also. He’s that unusual person who, with a simple smile, lights up a room.” That leadership and willingness to invest himself personally sets Kerstetter apart, said Keri Schmidt, President and CEO of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce. “It’s not just writing a check. is fully involved and will even send an army of the good people over at Classic Chevrolet to help,” said Schmidt, adding that Kerstetter didn’t waste any time in becoming a part of the community. “He came in as a perfect stranger, and today, it feels like he’s been a Fort Bender for decades.” Kerstetter’s first charitable donation came through his membership in the Exchange Club of Fort Bend after seeing a presentation on child abuse given by Child Advocates of Fort Bend. “I started giving then and haven’t stopped,” Kerstetter said with a smile. The generous nature Classic Chev-
rolet of Sugar Land displays is a reflection of the mindset of its company, Durant Auto Group, Kerstetter said. Tom Durant and the employees of Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine, the dealership where Kerstetter worked before coming to Sugar Land, donated $80,000 to Katrina victims in 2005. “Sometimes you meet somebody you know you want to be associated with,” said Kerstetter, adding that Durant was one of the “good guys” in the car business. “Tom was that for me. Once you work for Tom, it‘s really hard to work for anybody else in the car business.”

Don Kerstetter with Exchange Club of Sugar Land members John Robson and Betty Baitland at the Exchange Club of Sugar Land’s annual 2011 Spaghetti Cookoff at Fluor.
Kerstetter got into the car business in 1989 and by 1994 was working for Durant’s Classic Chevrolet in the finance department, where he remained for 15 years. The last seven years of that span, Kerstetter ran the department. He asked Durant to keep him in mind whenever an opportunity for a partner arose. That chance came in 2009 when the Durant Auto Group purchased the Sugar Land location out of bankruptcy court. Two other companies had bids on the dealership, which they did not follow through, and Durant was awarded the location. Kerstetter is one of Durant’s seven partners and owner of one of eight Durant Auto Group locations. “We basically bought an empty building, a franchise and 460 cars worth of inventory,” Kerstetter said. But owning a successful car dealership wasn’t always in Kerstetter’s plans. The Ole Miss graduate spent his first three years of college working toward a business degree. “In the 1980s, that’s what you did,” Kerstetter said. “That was the culture then.” Realizing he simply wasn’t happy going down that well-trodden path, he decid-
ed to get serious about school and changed his major to English because he loved to read. At the time, he was also working on his other passion – martial arts. Kerstetter ran a karate school while he was a fulltime student and committed himself to a strict regimen of exercises every day. Kerstetter graduated from Ole Miss in 1987 with a major in English, a minor in business and ended up a few hours short of a double major in history. Kerstetter, who at one point considered being a lawyer, not because he had a passion for it but because he felt he had the right skill set, got into the car business after speaking with a trusted old friend who was in auto sales. Now, the owner of a dealership that won the 2010 Chevrolet Dealer of the Year Award – an honor reserved for just 51 Chevy and 105 General Motors dealers that exemplify outstanding customer service – Kerstetter found his calling. That’s not to say Kerstetter lacked challenges along the way. A busted water heater flooded Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land on the first Saturday night the dealership was open. Repairs cost $65,000. “We had four inches of water in here, then we had miles upon miles of electrical cords throughout this place and had to tear out offices,” Kerstetter said.

Classis Chevrolet’s Don Kerstetter Focuses on Community When Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land started pouring its time, money and resources into the Fort Bend County community, owner Don Kerstetter wanted to make sure he helped the greatest number of people in a variety of fields instead of
focusing on just one or two causes. He has seen that desire come to fruition over the past three years. In 2011 alone, Classic Chevrolet contributed to dozens of charities and organizations – ranging from medical groups to educational
causes to athletic booster clubs. “I can go to my grave and say I made a difference,” Kerstetter said. “Short of employing people who are thrilled to be here, we need to ask what kind of legacy we left behind.”
The charities, organizations, schools and fundraisers who were supported by Classic Chevrolet in 2011 are: • American Diabetes Association • The Arc of Fort Bend County • Asians Against Domestic Abuse • Austin High School • Better Business Bureau • Boy Scouts of America • CASA Child Advocates • Clements High Athletic Booster Club • Cornerstone Elementary PTA • Dulles High School • Fort Bend Boys Choir • Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce • Fort Bend Education Foundation • Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo
Ironically, if the Classic Chevrolet closed at 9 p.m. like most dealerships, the problem might have been realized while employees were still there. Kerstetter, in an effort to allow employees to have time off with their families, closes the dealership at 6 p.m. on Saturdays. The busted water heater situation was nothing compared to the flood of negative feelings Kerstetter faced in the early going at Classic Chevrolet. The previous owners of the dealership’s location at the intersection of Highways 90 and 59 had a terrible reputation among the Fort Bend County community, to put it mildly. “There was distrust and anger over mistreatment of customers,” Kerstetter said. “It’s kind of like a haunted house. Everyone’s going to think it’s haunted no matter how much time passes. The county didn’t have a Chevy dealer they could trust.” Classic Chevrolet in Grapevine had a good reputation in customer service, and Kerstetter said he was determined to change the culture in Sugar Land. Nearly three years later, Kerstetter, who serves on the Board of Directors for the Better Business Bureau, still fights the battle to separate Classic Chevrolet from the old dealership that owned the location. “This is personal,” Kerstetter said. “Customers have to see in my soul and

It’s affected me personally and emotionally. I wondered sometimes, ‘What more can I do?’” Classic Chevrolet succeeded in changing the community’s opinion and by hurdling other obstacles, said Thompson, adding that the economic downturn in 2009 didn’t make matters easier. Kerstetter impressed the mayor and the local government with the way he went about his business, going out of his way to make sure he was in compliance with city ordinances. Classic Chevrolet earned the trust of other local officials as well, winning contracts with the city and county. In December 2009, the Sugar Land Police Department ordered $500,000 worth of fort bend

cars from the dealer, and last month, Classic Chevrolet won a second bid for a nearly identical amount. “I’m proud of getting the police department folks on our side,” Kerstetter said. “I felt that was really important.” Kerstetter’s honest approach to business vaulted his dealership to success – both in terms of cars sold and satisfied customers. “I just want people to say, ‘This is a positive thing, and we’re happy he’s here,’” the dealer said. “If people are genuinely happy you’re here, that means more than anything. You can’t buy that.” Despite all this, Kerstetter refuses to be complacent concerning Classic Chevrolet’s success. “I constantly emphasize the fact that we have to concentrate on our customers one customer at a time in order to be successful,” he said. With an eye on the future, Kerstetter, Durant and Howie Bentley plan to close on a second location in Galveston this month. Classic of Galveston will feature Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac, Ford, Ford Medium Duty, Toyota, Scion and Honda. As Kerstetter’s customer base expands geographically, one can be sure his giving attitude and forthright business dealings will continue to influence a growing number of people as well. • FBF

Takin’ Care of Business
A
n employer was going to be gone for an extended period of time. He called in his three employees and assigned responsibilities to each. To his most productive he gave 60%, to his second he assigned 25% and his third received 15%. Upon his return, he called in each one for an accounting. His first employee had doubled his business. “Well done,” said the employer. His second employee also doubled his business. “Well done,” said he. But his third employee was slothful and had not even tried to grow and nurture his interest. The owner immediately fired that employee and gave it to the first employee, saying that which does not grow will die. This 2,000-year-old thinly disguised parable can be used even today. For us to grow and prosper, we must give to our most productive not our least productive. The American business person has been castigated as being vile and greedy, while our government can solve our problems. Whether it be the U.S. mail, Medicaid, Medicare or balancing the national budget, I think the government has proven they are the least productive of all. As we enter this election season, let’s hold our elected officials accountable for their lack of productivity. One interesting aspect of this political season is that
all candidates are being forced to focus on the economy and jobs. Let American business grow and create productive jobs. Doing so will take people off government payroll and create new taxpayers as well. Our stock market is beginning to reflect that possibility. Remove the barriers and restrictions of government red tape and as Bachman-Turner Overdrive sang in 1974, let America get back to “takin’ care of business.” Singing a different tune? Gluten? This Little Protein May be the Source of Your Chronic Health Problems…
M
any people today are going on gluten free diets. You can find extensive gluten free sections in Kroger, HEB, and Whole Foods. Gluten has been in the national spot light receiving recognition on Discovery Health, CNN’s Larry King, Oprah, David Letterman, The View, Good Housekeeping Magazine and more. There is even a “dummies book” available for those with gluten sensitivity.1 So What is Gluten? Gluten is a protein found in the following grains: wheat, barley, rye, and oats. It is also found in processed foods derived from wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Breads, cereals, and pastas are rich in gluten. Other foods and/or food additives can be derived from gluten containing grains. Examples include soy sauce, gravies, soups, whiskey, and modified food starch. Traditional medical thought is that the protein gluten interacts with some people’s immune systems causing an autoimmune reaction which damages the intestine. However, newer research is identifying that the protein gluten is only part of the problem. Some scientists argue that many grains (including corn) can create similar reactions. So what is gluten sensitivity? It depends on who you ask. Many people use the term gluten sensitivity interchangeably with celiac disease (an autoimmune intestinal disorder). Some call gluten sensitivity a food allergy or intolerance. The truth of the matter is that gluten sensitivity is not a disease at all.
Gluten sensitivity causes celiac disease, but not all people with gluten sensitivity develop celiac disease. This is where the problem in traditional diagnosis can occur. The only way to confirm whether or not a person has celiac disease is to perform an intestinal biopsy. If the results reveal villous atrophy (flattening of the intestinal folds) then celiac disease is diagnosed. If the biopsy results are negative, then both celiac disease and gluten sensitivity may be dismissed by the physician. There are more than 180 different disease conditions, syndromes, and symptoms that have been linked to gluten sensitivity in the medical research.2,3 Some common conditions include thyroid disorders, migraines, vertigo, osteoporosis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and PCOS. There have been two proposed names in the medical literature for this classification of gluten sensitivity. 1. Non-Celiac Gluten Intolerance4 and 2. Gluten Syndrome.5 Diagnosing Gluten Sensitivity & Celiac Disease The proper tools must be used to accurately diagnose gluten sensitivity. Relying solely on a biopsy can delay a diagnosis for several years. I have personally seen cases of celiac disease where up to 8 biopsies were performed before a diagnosis was made. Blood antibody tests provide a better degree of accuracy but still have a great degree of false negatives. Genetic testing offers the greatest degree of accuracy and when combined with a patient’s history and examination a diagnosis can
be made early and accurately. www.GlutenFreeSociety.org offers genetic testing and educational services about gluten. Once Again, Common Sense Applies – Several years ago, many Americans played an unknowing role in the social experiment known as the Atkin’s diet. This diet, largely devoid of grain provided many with better health through weight loss and reduction of many generalized symptoms of poor health. However, there were also those whose health did poorly on the Atkin’s diet. People are different and unique. Renowned Nobel Prize winning scientist, Roger Williams, wrote a book called Biochemical Individuality examining these individual differences. Bottom line: one diet is not right for everyone. Because going on a gluten free takes a great deal of education and commitment, it is recommended that proper testing be performed to identify whether the diet is right for you. Remember going gluten free is not a trendy diet; it is a permanent lifestyle that should be taken very seriously as even small amounts of gluten exposure can cause problems. This month I will leave you with a final thought on gluten and grains. When farmers want their cows and pigs to gain weight before going to market, they feed them more grain. In the past 100 years, grain consumption has dramatically increased, paralleling a rise in the incidence of heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and cancer. Despite the above facts many doctors and dieticians continue to blindly prescribe “heart healthy” diets high in grain. For more information, visit www.GlutenFreeSociety.org. References: 1. acki Breckon Profile of a Philanthropist By Tanya Sterling
J
acki Breckon is a multi-faceted, international-yet-Texas kind of woman who is just as comfortable in an evening gown at a gala as she is maintaining her family’s 10-acre horse ranch in Richmond, not to mention exploring various parts of the world. She spends her days being a wife to Karl, parenting her daughter Erika, raising rare Egyptian Arabian horses, taking care of her father and is a philanthropist extraordinaire. Breckon’s life started out with an international flair. Born to an Irish mom and a dad from Sri Lanka, Breckon’s parents met while studying at a university in London where Jacki and her brother, Eric, were soon born. The family relocated to the United States and eventually settled in Houston. This
happened to be the summer right before Breckon started 3rd grade, and her parents suggested they utilize the summer months by visiting family overseas. What occurred was a whirlwind tour of 43 countries over the course of 90 days including Singapore, England, Egypt and Ireland. “My teacher kept thinking I had this vivid and wild imagination as I would talk about seeing the pyramids in Egypt,” said Breckon. “My mother finally contacted her and let her know that I actually did tour the Egyptian pyramids!” With her father’s job as an engineer, Breckon lived in countries such as the Virgin Islands and Saudi Arabia and spent her first two years of high school
at a boarding school in Rome, Italy. She eventually married her husband, Karl, also an engineer, and continuing the life she led with her parents, the young couple relocated to Philippines and then to Puerto Rico. It was in the Philippines where Breckon started her journey in philanthropy. “There was an orphanage where the majority of the kids were AmeriAsian - most of the dads were American servicemen who left the island after they were sent back to the USA,” said Breckon. “ An American priest

ran this orphanage, and I helped place these kids in American homes. After that grand experience, I started volunteering wherever I happened to be in the world.” Not only has Breckon volunteered ever since returning from overseas, she also kicked it up a notch by starting Girlfriends’ Giggle, one of Fort Bend County’s premier all-female events benefitting the Fort Bend Women’s Shelter. In its 7th year, Giggle, hosted by STARS (the auxiliary group which supports the center through special events and by assisting with agency projects) has become a popular “Grown Up Girls’ Pajama Party” which has raised nearly $300,000 to assist survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children since its inception in 2005. The Girlfriends’ Giggle gives women the chance to hang out with their girlfriends while indulging in massages, new hair styles, make-up tips and much more. Women shop for home decor, clothes and shoes. Fort Bend’s best restaurants serve up delicious foods, and there are numerous, unique auction items. All proceeds go towards providing free and confidential emergency shelter, counseling, crisis intervention and other supportive services provided by the Women’s Center. “My main reason for starting Giggle and the main reason why I still am actively involved are the kids,” said Breckon. “We are one of the few Women’s Centers in the area that house both women and their kids – not only the women. My heart aches for these kids as they struggle to adjust to their new life situation, whether temporary or permanent. So those little faces keep me motivated to raise funds for more services and shelter for these heartbroken families.” The emergency shelter program provides both a 24-hour crisis hotline and emergency shelter for women and children who are victims of family violence and sexual assault. Services the center offers include shelter, food, clothing, emergency and onsite basic medical care, transportation, weekly case management, a wellness room, children’s services, and a Learning Resource Center. Shelter clients also have the

In addition to Girlfriends’ Giggle, Breckon actively volunteers at her daughter Erika’s school, St. Laurence Catholic School. She is the past Chair of the Music Fest for the Fort Bend Women’s Center and was a provisional member in the Fort Bend Junior Service League. Breckon has also worked with Caring Critters and the Lighthouse of Houston. The Breckon family are active members of Sacred Heart Church in Richmond. One of Breckon’s greatest joys is her family’s Egyptian Arabian horses. “There are only about 6,000 of these
horses in the world, and we have owned approximately 20 of them over the years,” said Breckon. Well-regarded in the Arabian horse industry, the Breckons have been raising these animals for almost 20 years. One of their horses was a top national show horse and was eventually sold to the Crown Prince of Dubai. Breckon’s greatest joy of her life is her 13 year-old daughter, Erika. A competitive gymnast who is overall ranked 7th in state competitions, Erika is a huge Texas A&M fan who wants to be a veterinarian. Erika has also shown horses in international events in Lexington, Kentucky where she won her event. She’s currently the youngest, under the age of 18, to win a

grand championship. “Erika is following in her dad’s footsteps with her love of horses,” said Breckon. “Both Karl and Erika are amateur horse handlers who are well known in the industry.” In addition to her already full life, Breckon is the caregiver for her father who lives with them, and she was also the caregiver for her father-in-law who recently passed away. “I live life passionately and to the fullest,” said Breckon. “I believe that one of the ways you will find true happiness is when you are serving people.” Coming from a woman who has literally been around the world, those are, indeed, true – and inspirational – words to live by. Christmas is a day of meaning and traditions, a special day spent in the warm circle of family and friends. Heritage Baptist Church Celebrates the Savior The Holy Spirit led Isaiah to prophesy concerning the coming of the Messiah – “Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). Matthew records that “Emmanuel” means “God with us.” That, in three words, is exactly who Jesus Christ is. He lived among people and was rejected and crucified. He was perfect, without sin and offered Himself as the sacrifice that bought salvation for mankind. Our only responsibility is to repent of our sins and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Heritage Baptist Church in Missouri City welcomes you to join us this month as we celebrate the birth of the Savior. Music minister Dennis Bell and the Heritage Choir have been working on special Christmas music

that will be performed in the weeks leading up to our Sunday morning Christmas worship service, which falls on December 25th this year. The Heritage Baptist Church Family Christmas Celebration is scheduled for 5 p.m. on December 18th. This event consists of Christmas songs, great food and Christian fellowship. Be sure to bring the children, as there will be a special treat for them. Finally, Senior Pastor Dr. Charles A. Murphy will be preaching a sermon based on the arrival of Jesus Christ during our Christmas morning worship service. There is no better way to acknowledge the Savior during the holiday season than being in church services, worshipping Him on the day we celebrate His birth. For more information, call 281-403-4994 or visit www.hbctx.org. H
What is the Christmas season? If we take our cue from the retail industry, it began a few days after Halloween and it seems to start earlier each year. It picks up real steam on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, then comes to a screeching halt on Christmas Day, December 25. But it wasn’t always like this. For centuries, the Church has been guided by the wisdom of the liturgical calendar which marks the ebb and flow of Christian life, reflective of nature and grounded in God’s marvelous plan of salvation. These weeks leading up to Christmas were never meant to be busy. Rather, during this season of Advent (the four weeks leading to Christmas) we are called to be contemplative. Traditions such as the Advent calendar and the Advent wreath have helped Christian families for centuries countdown to Christmas in “joyful expectation.” The Christmas season begins on December 25 and ends two weeks later. Fr. Drew Wood, pastor of St. Laurence Catholic Church, prays that we will find some peace amidst the haste of this over-commercialized time, welcoming everyone to join him in the serenity of Advent and the joy of Christmas. Every weekend, six Masses are celebrated at this large and dynamic Catholic Church. On Christmas, additional Masses are added to accommodate the large crowds, with five Masses on Christmas Eve and three on Christmas Day. To learn more about St. Laurence and the wisdom of the liturgical seasons, please visit the parish web site at www.stlaurence.org or visit St. Laurence, located at 3100 Sweetwater Boulevard in First Colony. Southminster Happenings Join us on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at 7:30 pm, for an evening of Lessons and Carols by GraceNotes, our contemporary worship band, and readers from our children’s choir. Relive the familiar stories of Advent and Christmas, sing favorite carols, and hear contemporary musical expressions of gratitude. What’s Santa’s favorite meal? Breakfast, of course! On Saturday, December 17 from 9:00 am-11:00 am, we will have fun, food, crafts and a visit from Mr. & Mrs. Claus. On Sunday, December 18, 2011, at 7:00 pm, Southminster Chancel Choir will present its annual Christmas Concert. This year’s concert will feature two major works: Ottorino Respighi’s Laud to the Nativity and K. Lee Scott’s Sing the Songs of Bethlehem. Both works will be accompanied by a professional orchestra. What a moving experience it will be to have the church’s music groups performing with orchestral accompaniment and congregational singing! In honor of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, the Christmas Eve Services provide a variety of opportunities for reflection and celebration. Our 4:30 pm service is designed for children and families and will offer our first annual live nativity. If you prefer a more contemporary experience, join us for the 7:30 pm Contemporary Worship Service with communion. The final service of the night will begin with pre-service music presented by our Chancel Choir at 10:30 pm and then our Candlelight Worship Service with communion will begin at 11:00 pm. Southminster Presbyterian Church is located at 4200 Cartwright Road Missouri City. Call us at 281-499-2310 or visit www.southminpres.org. H

O
n September 30, 2011, Fort Bend’s Linda Hancock received an award honoring a lifetime commitment to her community and her party at The Austin Club in Austin, Texas. Presented by numerous state officials including Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, Hancock was honored as the 2011 Volunteer of the Year, Senatorial District 18, by the State of Texas Republican Party and members of the Executive Committee. “It truly was a humbling and rewarding experience to be honored for my service to the Texas Republican Party with such a prestigious award,” said Hancock, who attended the ceremony with her husband, John. A native of Alabama educated at Vanderbilt University and the University of Alabama, Hancock has been an activist for the Republican Party since high school. She has held every major office in the Fort Bend Republican Women’s Club, is a member of the Greater Houston Council of Federated Republican Women and has distinguished herself by serving several years as Deputy President and District
Director on the Board of the Texas Federation of Republican Women. In 2003, Hancock was voted one of the Federation’s Ten Outstanding Women. A tireless organizer, Hancock has served in the campaigns for a wide range of electoral offices including State of Texas attorney general, governor, senator, and president. Governor George W. Bush named her a “Yellow Rose of Texas” for her dedicated efforts on behalf of the party and for her leadership in the community. “Linda embodies the spirit of public engagement that is the foundation of American government and is indeed deserving of this prestigious honor,” said Senator Glenn Hegar who signed the resolution for the award in the Texas Senate. Other than politics, Hancock enjoys numerous community service projects. She has for many years supported Fort Bend Seniors Meals On Wheels, the Richmond State School, and the Rainbow Room. The mythos of Superman gets a 21st century makeover in this tremendously engaging television series. The success of Smallville is palpable when you consider it’s ten-season run that helped clear up the story of Superman from his arrival through his youth. The story of Superman as a teenager was relatively unknown outside of the first few pages of the Action Comic back in 1938. What Smallville does so effectively is tell the story in wonderful detail about Clark Kent (Tom Welling) and his life as your average teenager living in the high plains. As Kent works to fit in, he continues to discover and learn to control his powers as well as his burgeoning hormones. His relationship with Lana Lang (Kristen Kreuk) continues to blossom through the majority of the series. The antagonists of the series continue to serve as a revolving door with shape shifters, killers and other notable fiends. The cast is wonderful and the show is simply brilliant. John Schneider and Annette O’Toole star as Clark’s parents, and Michael Rosenbaum is spot on as his arch rival Lex Luthor. The groundbreaking ten-season hit that redefined the origins of the world’s greatest hero is all here – from his arrival on Earth through his tumultuous teen years to Clark Kent’s final steps toward embracing his destiny as the Man of Steel. Relive a decade’s worth of thrills across 218 Episodes in a spectacular 62-Disc set that includes two Bonus Discs of Added Special Features. Let your spirits be lifted up, up and away. H
SILVERADO HOSPICE OF HOUSTON:
Focusing on the Gift of Care D
uring this holiday season, there’s no greater gift for your loved ones in need than the gift of hospice. This gift – and philosophy – of care has been designed to help patients and their families at the end of life, and no one provides the gift of hospice better than Silverado Hospice does. Ranked in the top 10% of hospices in the United States by their patients and families, they are proud to serve the residents of Fort Bend County. Hospice staff understands that the holidays can be particularly stressful for patients and their families as they face the challenges of a life-limiting condition. Tonja Moon “Created as a comDirector of Community Relations passionate lifeline for patients and families on an end of life journey, hospice brings comfort, guidance and support,” says Tonja Moon, Director of Community Relations. “I believe one of our patient’s daughters illustrated the hospice experience best.” “Silverado Hospice made it possible for my family to share the holidays with dad, at home—creating good memories that will last a lifetime.” Because everyone is so different in their life experiences, values, and cultural nuances, Silverado Hospice’s approach to care is on helping patients meet their own goals at end of life. Hospice team members spend time getting to know the patient and family. Then, attention is given to defining their expectations. Lastly, a joint plan is developed to help them meet their end of life goals. For some, it may be ensuring that pain is well managed. For others, they may focus on completing their ‘bucket list.’ And for many, it is just living out their final days surrounded by those they love. Giving the gift of hospice during the holidays can seem awkward, but studies show that the support and guidance provided by the hospice team is worth the effort. “Knowing that someone is just a
phone call away 24 hours a day gives reassurance to all,” says Dale Metzger, RN, Director of Patient Care Services. “One family told us, ‘We were surprised when we saw mom over Thanksgiving. She’d lost so much weight and seemed so frail. A friend suggested that we call hospice for help, and after some initial hesitation, we called and immediately received the highest quality of care for mom. We were surprised and pleased to learn that there were experts available to help mom, and that Medicare covered all of it. Hospice was a wonderful holiday gift for mom and for our entire family.’” The qualified team of Registered Nurses, Hospice Aides, Spiritual Counselors, Social Workers, Volunteers and Physicians all focus on the quality of life. “Using their unique skill sets, they ensure that patient’s physical as well
as psychosocial and spiritual needs are met,” says Tonja Moon. In addition to providing care for those with terminal illnesses, the staff of Silverado Hospice is uniquely qualified to care for patients with Alzheimer’s and other memory impairing illnesses. Silverado Hospice is dedicated to the belief that no one who has a lifelimiting illness should die alone, afraid, or in pain. Silverado Hospice provides peace, comfort and caring to terminally ill people and their families by treating the person, not the disease. At Silverado Hospice, hospice is about living all of life to its fullest. For more information about Silverado Hospice, call 261-565-2900, 866-716-2486 or visit www.silveradohospice.com. Parents have several choices when it comes to the education of their children. Those that visit the International Preparatory School are looking for something very specific. They are searching for a fresh philosophy and a renewed energy in teaching. Smaller class sizes rank as the number one concern. Why? Because this provides individual attention for students that require more support in some areas while addressing the needs of the gifted child. This all translates into a school where both the teachers and administration set common expectations in an open, interactive, understanding and energizing manner. Parents want a safe environment that maintains a high standard of discipline and respect, one that fosters a strong sense of community through school wide

The co-founders of a world-renowned teacher training company, ATiseminars.org, created the Turning Point Academy, a grades 6-12 private school that truly prepares its students for success in college…and in life! “As parents, we could not find the type of school we wished for our daughter,” was a sentiment we commonly heard. We have trained over 50,000 teachers annually for over 20 years, and with that knowledge, we decided to blend the best educational models into a learning experience that benefits today’s middle and high school students. Along with the pleasure of learning in a luxurious home setting with spectacular views, the Turning Point Academy proudly uses the new College Prep curriculum. Our curriculum is the “best of the best” and is recognized by the College Board. Both student and parents are personally involved in mapping out detailed plans for high school completion as well as college enrollment. We assist each student with the college application, enrollment and scholarship process. Grades 6-12 students are taught to take ownership of their learning by mastering goal-setting and weekly planning—habits necessary for college and future employment! You won’t find shortcuts on our tests like matching, true-false or multiple choice. Our students truly master each subject before moving on. Can you imagine a school without the drama in the hallways? Without negative peer pressure? Without homework? Visit our website to view our Channel 2 News interview at www.theturningpointacademy.org. Come Meet the Challenge with Play! We live in a globally competitive environment that will continue to demand new solutions for greater challenges using advanced technology. Science and engineering have contributed significantly to the high standard of living we currently enjoy but the US graduates fewer professionals into these fields than 30 years ago. Students must be fully prepared with toplevel skills in creativity, innovation, analysis, development, delivery and management in the science and technology fields to maintain the competitive leadership of the community and nation. Is your child ready to meet this challenge? Techno Chaos was established in Sugar Land to drive higher achievement and to increase the number of students pursing further education for science, engineering and technical professions. The goal at Techno Chaos is to make serious learning fun by reawakening the natural drive for learning and creativity. Techno Chao provides a wide range of programs from classes, camps, open play, league play, competitions, robot rumbles, night outs, merit badge workshops to teacher programs. Robotics education is featured throughout Techno Chaos programs, along with other effective methods. Play and competition are used to drive faster learning and improvement, and students are encouraged to learn from successes and failures to improve their projects and solutions. Techno Chaos offers a wide and growing curriculum in robotics education, which is primarily delivered through after-school programs and camps to enable access to students from any education setting. T
inker Tailor Soldier Spy is the long-awaited feature film version of John le Carré’s classic bestselling novel. The thriller is directed by Tomas Alfredson. The screenplay adaptation is by the writing team of Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan. The time is 1973. The Cold War of the mid-20th Century continues to damage international relations. Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), a.k.a. MI6 and code-named the Circus, is striving to keep pace with other countries’ espionage efforts and to keep the U.K. secure. The head of the Circus, known as Control (John Hurt), personally sends dedicated operative Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) into Hungary. But Jim’s mission goes bloodily awry, and Control is forced out of the Circus – as is his top lieutenant, George Smiley (Gary Oldman), a career spy with razor-sharp senses.
Estranged from his absent wife Ann, Smiley is soon called in to see undersecretary Oliver Lacon (Simon McBurney). He is to be rehired in secret at the government’s behest, as there is a gnawing fear that the Circus has long been compromised by a double agent, or mole, working for the Soviets and jeopardizing England. Supported by younger agent Peter Guillam (Benedict Cumberbatch), Smiley parses Circus activities past and present. In trying to track and identify the mole, Smiley is haunted by his decades-earlier interaction with the shadowy Russian spy master Karla. The mole’s trail remains cold until maverick field agent Ricki Tarr (Tom Hardy) unexpectedly contacts Lacon. While undercover in Turkey, Ricki has fallen for a betrayed married woman, Irina (Svetlana Khodchenkova), who claims to possess crucial intelligence. Separately, Smiley learns that Control narrowed
down the list of mole suspects to five men. They are the ambitious Percy Alleline (Toby Jones), whom he had code-named Tinker; suavely confident Bill Haydon (Colin Firth), dubbed Tailor; stalwart Roy Bland (Ciarán Hinds), called Soldier; officious Toby Esterhase (David Dencik), dubbed Poor Man; and Smiley himself. Even before the startling truth is revealed, the emotional and physical tolls on the players enmeshed in the deadly international spy game will escalate. Director Tomas Alfredson has arguably done many things with his latest film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, but one thing in particular is certain: he has amassed a who’s who dream team of acting talent for the picture. Gary Oldman is simply brilliant and is a sure fire Oscar contender for his performance. The rest of the cast is just as colorful and frightful, depending upon your perspective. The writing is very complex as the film is filled with numerous flashbacks and flash forwards. The story arcs will certainly keep you guessing and engrossed through to the end of the film. Tinker is simply a realistic secret service film that provides seemingly a real look into the life of what that career could entail. This is, without a doubt, one of the best films of the year as well as the best spy film to come out in years. H

Team Butterfly is preparing for the Chevron Houston Marathon this January.
New CEO Book Club to Benefit Needy Kids and Families in Houston Business and benevolence are coming together in an innovative new way that will help change the lives of hundreds of children and families in the Gulf Coast area and beyond. Books-A-Million at Houston Pavilions recently launched a CEO Book Club, in which downtown leaders select books that interest and inspire them to raise money for charity. Selections by John Ragan, executive vice president and president of the Gulf Coast Region for NRG Energy, will benefit Presbyterian Children’s Homes and Services, which provides adoption, foster care and outreach services in the Houston area. Ragan’s selections include Truman, Good to Great, Into Thin Air, The Big Short and The Blind Side. Ragan and his wife adopted their two children through the agency’s adoption program. “My wife, Leslie, and I are forever grateful for PCHAS bringing two wonderful children into our lives,” Ragan says. PCHAS has impacted people all over the area, including one special group based in Missouri City. Team Butterfly formed in 2005 at Southminster Presbyterian Church to raise funds for PCHAS through the Chevron Houston Marathon. Team Butterfly has grown into a group of 25 women and men who enjoy the challenge of preparing for the marathon each January, inspiring and supporting each other while keeping their shared mission in mind. High School HOT SHOT
Kristen Pownell: Marching to a Perfect “Score”
K
risten Pownell, a senior at Clements High School in Fort Bend County, is an accomplished young lady. Not only is she an academically superior student, she is also involved in numerous clubs and organizations where she donates her time and energy to charitable organizations. Kristen’s unweighted grade point average is 4.0 with the majority of her classes being Honors or Advanced Placement. It is no surprise that Kristen is in the top ten percent of her graduating class. However, a big surprise came when Kristen received her SAT score. Kristen had received a perfect score of 2400 after her first try on the test. With a perfect score of 2400, Kristen could attend almost any university, but her top choices for college are the University of Texas, Texas A&M University, Rice University and Stanford University. Kristen’s first choice is Stanford where she would like to major in Chemical Engineering. Kristen is also a four-year member of the Clements Marching Band. She played the keyboard her freshman and sophomore year and began playing the cymbals her junior year. This year, Kristen is the Section Leader for the cymbals. “Band has taught me a
Kr i s te n lot about interacting with different types of people,” said Kristen. “We all work together to achieve a common goal and the success that we have is so rewarding.” The band has won awards at many contests this season. Even though football season is over, Kristen will keep busy. She is a member of the Music Honor Society, Science National Honor Society and the Red Cross Club. In addition, Kristen is the Treasurer of the UNICEF Club and National Honor Society. As a member of NHS, one of the requirements is community service. To complete this requirement, Kristen participates in many service projects with the Fort Bend County Women’s Center. She enjoys going to the shelter and playing with the kids. “Through volunteering at the shelter, I have learned that regardless of someone’s background or living situation, kids are kids, and they just want to have fun,” said Kristen. “We shouldn’t treat people differently because of their background be-

cause in the end, we are all the same.” An avid world traveler, Kristen has been exposed to many different cultures; her favorite place being New Zealand. “The country of New Zealand is beautiful and the people are really friendly,” said Kristen. “The land there is untouched, and there is not a lot of civilization unlike the United States.” As only a senior in High School, Kristen has been to every continent but Antarctica. Through her participation in Girl Scouts, Kristen applied to attend the Oxford Youth Leadership Program in London in 2010, a two-week program with Girl Scouts from across America focused on learning how to lead others by example. Kristen is an accomplished Girl Scout who has recently earned her Gold Award. For her Bronze, Silver and Gold Award, Kristen focused on improving youth literacy. To earn her Bronze Award, Kristen recorded children’s books on tape and gave them to children at local schools. She ran a workshop at Camp Colony Creek Day Camp to help Brownies earn their reading badge for her Silver Award. To obtain her Gold Award, Kristen planned a day long event for local youth. Children were invited to the Literacy Council of Fort Bend County where Kristen set up different stations to increase the children’s love of reading. Kristen is an extraordinary student and charitable person. From a Gold Award winning Girl Scout to scoring a perfect 2400 on the SAT, Kristen has accomplished so much in such a short amount of time that she is destined for a successful future. H

M edical F ocus Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Earns National Chest Pain Center Accreditation
Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Chest Pain Center Accreditation Committee. Methodist Sugar Land Hospital (MSLH) has received Chest Pain Center Accreditation from the national Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC), a designation reserved for hospitals that demonstrate the highest level of expertise in treating heart attack patients. The accreditation was the final step in a two-year process designed to demonstrate the hospital’s investments in staffing, training and equipment, as well as its collaborative relationships with physicians and emergency medical services (EMS) and public education efforts on the signs and symptoms of acute coronary syndromes. The rigorous evaluation by SCPC included a thorough review of hospital policies, standards and patient data and an on-site visit. The evaluation focused on the hospital’s adherence to strict criteria that: • Reduces the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment. • Treats patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved. • Monitors patients when it is not certain that they are having a heart attack to ensure that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital. “Treating patients who present with chest pain quickly and effectively requires a true team effort, with coordination
among EMS, our physicians, and staff from the Emergency Department, Cath Lab, Chest Pain Center, Laboratory and Radiology,” said Scott Stover, Director of Emergency Services and Chest Pain Center Coordinator at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “This accreditation is validation that our commitment to providing outstanding cardiac care is making a difference in the lives of our patients.” A key component of the hospital’s accreditation is the speed with which heart attack patients are treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the Cath Lab. From arrival to the Emergency Department to the procedure, MSLH is averaging about 55 minutes – well below the national standard of 90 minutes. “That’s a testament to the stringent protocols we’ve put in place and the coordina-
tion between departments to ensure that our patients are being treated promptly and appropriately,” says Scott Rivenes, M.D., Chief of Emergency Medicine. “PCI is critical to opening up the blocked artery and re-establishing blood flow,” says Keith Ellis, M.D., Medical Director of the MSLH Chest Pain Center. “The quicker that we can identify patients who are having heart attacks, transport them to the Cath Lab, and begin the PCI, the better chance we have of saving lives – and improving the quality of life postprocedure by saving valuable heart tissue. I encourage people to call 911 immediately. By doing so, you will receive treatment sooner and thus limit the chances of damage to the heart—time is muscle.” Patients arriving at MSLH typically have an angioplasty balloon – used to push back the artery-clogging plaque and allow blood to flow – inflated in less than an hour after presenting via the Emergency Department, according to Emergency Services Director Scott Stover. About the Society of Chest Pain Centers The Society of Chest Pain Centers (SCPC) is an international not-for-profit organization whose mission is to transform cardiovascular care by assisting facilities in their effort to create communities of excellence that bring together quality, cost and patient satisfaction. As the only cross-specialty Society, SCPC provides the support needed for hospital systems to effectively bridge existing gaps in treatment by providing the tools, education and support necessary to successfully navigate the changing face of healthcare. For more information on SCPC, visit www.scpcp.org, or call toll free 1-877-271-4176. H

clothing will benefit local children in the Fort Bend area during this holiday season. “We were very pleased to see such a large turn-out on Saturday morning. It is great to work and live in a community that can come together for a wonderful cause that will benefit the children in our community. We are also proud to once again partner with the local exchange and
rotary clubs to provide this community offering and plan to do so again in 2012,” said Leena Taneja, Director of Physician Relations and Marketing. Organizers of Santa’s Gift Exchange 2011 are anticipating an increase of qualifying families. Santa’s Gift Exchange will provide toys and clothing to more than 3,500 economically disadvantaged children in Fort Bend County. “A special thank you to the 350 plus people who attended the free flu shot clinic and Santa’s Exchange event, as more children will now get the presents they deserve,” said Kaelyn Stolhand, Marketing Coordinator at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “We are thrilled that Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has once again collaborated with Santa’s Exchange for this very worthwhile project. Through this joint effort, we are well on our way to collecting toys for the underprivileged Fort Bend children that without Santa’s Exchange would not be able to celebrate the holidays,” said Steve Griffith, President of the Exchange Club of Sugar Land.

Most Holistic In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) – A Natural Way To Build A FamilyNatural Cycle in vitro fertilization (IVF) is the most holistic IVF treatment possible, avoiding fertility drugs that would otherwise stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. It intends to only capture the one egg the body develops naturally each month during the menstrual cycle. This egg is generally the best quality egg a woman’s body will produce even when fertility drugs are used, with the greatest chance for pregnancy. Women who choose natural cycle IVF generally favor its holistic approach, the way nature intends women to conceive and create life. Natural cycle IVF is also ideal for women who, because of advanced age or poor fertility health, are less likely to produce multiple eggs even if high dosages of fertility drugs are administered. When they do undergo fertility treatment, they are either offered only limited IVF access or made to suffer cancelled cycles because they cannot produce more than three to five eggs. For them natural cycle approach avoids the side effects and high cost of drugs, as
well as the discomfort of daily injections. Mini-IVF is another holistic IVF treatment offering a gentle alternative to conventional IVF. It differs from Natural Cycle IVF in its use of minimal dosage of fertility drugs to stimulate the ovaries so that they can produce the maximum number (usually 3-5) of “quality” eggs possible in a single cycle. Research has shown that the quality eggs harvested in a Mini-IVF cycle are the only eggs that are capable of producing a healthy baby, even if more were to be produced through hyper-stimulation in a conventional IVF. Those beyond 3-5 are typically not viable and are either discarded prior to embryo transfer or will be www.fortbend

prone to end up with miscarriage. Like in Natural Cycle IVF, women using Mini-IVF also avoid the side effects and high cost of drugs. Mini-IVF may be preferable to natural cycle IVF for some women because it yields more eggs and increases the chances of pregnancy. It also provides surplus embryos for freezing, and holds the reserve embryos for future use. The pregnancy rates for these two approaches is competitive with conventional IVF based on the number of embryos transferred while the health risks associated with multiple births are much lower. Both approaches are easier, less stressful and less expensive, and most ideal for couples who are interested in choosing a minimal drug and chemical way to build a family. Baked potatoes are another popular item and are served loaded with butter, sour cream, cheese and chives or with chopped beef, ham, links, chicken breast, or with a mix of meats. The children’s menu features a smaller sized barbeque plate or sandwich, grilled cheese sandwich, corn dog, chicken strips or a hamburger or cheeseburger. Everything old is new again introducing “Darling Dames! ”
I’
ve been noticing that every now and then, our society does a flip backwards. For me, this realization started with the Old Spice man last year that boasted a man doing “manly” things, in a subtle way, trying to put men back in their place. Amusingly so by having the questioned posed to the ladies, of course: “Does your man....?” The gurus at Old Spice know full well it is us women who shop for those men, and by somehow tapping into the inner psyches of such women, they would sell more old spice. Ahhh, indeed they did! Sales for their brand sky rocketed, and they are still upwards with their new brand. Brilliant? Absolutely. The results, though, are telling of a time which we live in now. I was born in 1970, and ya’ll I don’t really remember any of that women’s
rights’ stuff. By the time I got around to needing it, you know, the rights’ stuff, it had already happened so I never particularly had strong feelings about it. I had the rights! Ya’ll also know that my Nana raised me, and she came from a time when “men were men and women knew their place!” I’d say despite coming from that time, she did not allow it to color and distort her desires for me to be anything that I wanted to be! I always knew men opened doors and paid for things like dinner dates, and thankfully, I married early and to a guy from the same set of thinking as myself. All these years later – 21 to be exact – here I find myself having made a career creating images that essentially empower women. It dawned on me the other day that I have created images of pregnant fort bend

and proud mommies to be and that many if not all of those mommies, were paying for the experience to be empowered by such an image as a way of celebrating and embracing what it means to be...yes, a woman. Likewise, I had been watching as many of those mommies return to me to do of all things a “pin up.” Now, I was lost and unsure of exactly what a “pin up” was! I went and did a little research, and do you know what I found? Women…gorgeous women painted, and yes, clothed but in strangely positioned situations that present them as needy and wanting of help. Could it be that these empowered women somewhere deep down wish to still, even if every once in a while, be taken care of? Have a door opened for them? I sure hope so! So, I have done what every smart business woman does and created a new line of updated “pin up” portraits for the modern woman. The latest creations are painted in the same Saturday Evening Post style of the 1940’s, and I have even created new signage just for this line. “Murray USA” is precariously positioned on these women, and each are works of art for our time and place. I have named the line “Darling Dames,” and we are booking them like crazy for calendars for unsuspecting husbands to enjoy next year! The Old Spice commercials are trendy, and the latest from Dr. Pepper for a new drink that states “for men only” are tapping into a desire for each sex to be more gender specific in their roles. The undercurrent of the American psyche is crying out that it’s okay to be a man and ladies, my new work reflects that it is definitely okay to be a woman! If you think you might want to do a calendar for your hubby or just a poster print for him under the tree, the time is now. I look forward to creating another lasting image for ya’ll to enjoy for years to come! Take Care of You!
