Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC):

Child victims are brought to the CAC where forensic interviewers allow them to tell their stories in a safe place, social workers provide support and facilitate resources, therapists help them heal from their trauma and criminal court advocates prepare them for court testimony.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA):

Trained CASA Volunteers provide a voice for children who are in the care of the child welfare system and advocate for their “best interests” - emotional, physical, educational and medical needs. We are one of the few programs in Texas that matches 100% of children in foster care with a CASA Volunteer.

EXCLAMATION POINTS! THE INSIDE SCOOP STRAIGHT FROM THE TOP Vol. 10 No. 6 April 2014

Editor-in-Chief, PATTI PARISH-KAMINSKI Spring has sprung in the Bend, and we are finding ourselves busier than ever! This issue alone features six Seen on the Scenes and several pages of Out and About photos of us covering the people, places and happenings in Fort Bend. Yes, we are busy in the Bend, and most importantly, we are blessed to live in our wonderful, diverse community that has so many opportunities to Lisa Fredrickson, Karen Mawyer and learn, thrive and grow. Patti Parish-Kaminski at Reading Learning about different cultures is something Between the Wines. that we really enjoy at Fort Bend Focus, and a few months ago, our cultural correspondent Zeenat Kassam Mitha, joined our team. This month, Zeenat attended The Asia Society Texas Center Tiger Ball celebrating Japan, along with many Fort Benders, and she shares with us the history of The Asia Society Texas Center on page 30. In this issue, we also celebrate April’s dual designation as Autism Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month. Organizations providing education and support of autism like Texana and Hope for Three are hosting community events this month as is Child Advocates of Fort Bend – all to help shine the spotlight on these important issues. So, when you see your friends and neighbors sporting blue or puzzle ribbons during the month of April, remember these important issues that affect so many. This month’s cover story is truly amazing. You’ll meet Air National Guard’s Jonathan Wilson, a young man who literally got his life back with the unique approach to specialized care he received at the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center. Jonathan is not only back at work, he’s back with his three children – pain free – and able to be the husband and father he deserves to be. Read about his journey and the excellent medical professionals at the Spine Center on page 16. Who is ready to Sip and Stroll? The 11th Annual Sugar Land Wine and Food Affair happens this month, and it looks to be the best one yet. Read all about it on page 86. From our family to yours, we wish you a blessed Easter. We will see you out and about in the Bend!

COVER STORY

A New Approach to Medicine:

The Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center Brings Comprehensive, Specialized Care to Fort Bend

D

ealing with medical issues is simply a part of life. From the mundane to the more severe, we all seek and consult with medical professionals on a routine basis. Fortunately, we live in an age where excellent medical care is available. The downfall is that when we require the attention of a specialist, things can become more stressful, and many times, more complicated.

T

hat is certainly the case for patients suffering with back pain, the second leading medical condition that brings patients to their doctor’s office. Eighty percent of Americans experience back pain at some point in their lives, and with its widespread prevalence, back and neck pain can be difficult to properly diagnose and treat. For many years, patients in search of a back and neck pain specialist had to endure a trip to the Medical Center, left to navigate the path of specialized medicine on their own, making an already stressful situation much more so. Fortunately, this additional stress in seeking specialized health care is no longer necessary as the answer to quality, specialized health care for patients suffering from back and neck issues is right here in Fort Bend.

Comprehensive Care For those needing a highly skilled medical specialist for the back and neck, the answer is at the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center, where they have streamlined specialized health care, always putting the patient first. Can you imagine calling directly to the facility that you need without a referral from your primary physician and getting an expedited appointment with a highly skilled professional? Not to mention a safe place where all of the physicians and staff communicate with each other and you, the patient. This type of service is only available at the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center. From self-referrals to physician referrals, patients can expect an experience like no other. From the initial inquiry, patients speak with the nurse navigator Maureen Lall, nurse practitioner with clinical expertise in spine and neuroscience nursing, who will schedule all of their appointments quickly. The nurse navigator will remain in communication with patients continually throughout the process to discuss and educate them about their condition and treatment plan, serving as their personal advocate for care. Skilled Professionals A staff of 17 skilled neurologists, neurosurgeons, orthopedic spine surgeons, pain management specialists and neuroradiologists have been assembled to provide the most comprehensive back, neck and pain program available in southeast Texas. As the first of its kind in the region, the Spine Center also provides outpatient physical therapy. Patients have the benefit of physical therapy, occupational therapy and aquatic therapy. These skilled professionals work one-on-one with patients to develop treatment programs aimed at regaining function, increasing mobility and providing pain management, as well as restoring skills necessary for daily living.

Advanced Technology The Spine Center patients have access to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s state-of-the-art imaging technology and operating suites, along with an in-house lab to ensure patients benefit from timely results. If surgery is the best course of treatment,

patients can be assured that they have the most highly skilled surgeons available. Imaging equipment includes four CT Scanners and three whole body 3-Tesla MRI machines including a 3-Tesla Wide Bore MRI for larger or claustrophobic patients, the only one of its kind in our area.

Meet Jonathan Wilson Patient – Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center Jonathan Wilson was raised in Fort Bend County and attended Clements High School. After school, he began his military career, and now at 35 years-old, he is part of the Air National Guard as an Avionics Specialist. His mobility is an important part of his life, not only in his job, but at home where he and his wife are raising their three children. “I was at the gym working out,” recalled Wilson. “I finished my workout, and by the time I got home, I knew something had happened. I was experiencing pain in my neck and left arm.” fort bend

Three days after his injury, Wilson contacted his primary care physician, and was referred to Dr. Cheryl White, an interventional pain management specialist and a founding member of the Spine Center. During his visit, xrays and an MRI of his neck and spine were completed to determine the cause of his pain. The test results indicated that compressed nerves in Wilson’s neck were the cause of his pain. Dr. White administered an epidural steroid injection which decreased the intensity of his pain. After exhausting nonsurgical forms of treatment, Dr. White referred Wilson to her colleage, Dr. Vincent Wang, neurosurgeon at the Spine Center, for further evaluation. “I received a call from the Spine Center and was scheduled for an appointment immediately,” said Wilson. “Dr. Wang was great. He explained exactly what was going on with my neck. We went over the MRI results, and he showed me my compressed nerves.” Wilson shared that the information he received from Dr. Wang made him feel secure knowing that he was in the hands of an expert. “Dr. Wang felt that a month of physical therapy at the

Spine Center would be our first course of action. He informed me that surgery was a last resort. I was relieved that Dr. Wang did not suggest surgery to start with.” Wilson completed one month of therapy at the Spine Center. “The physical therapists were very experienced and took excellent care of me.” Each session with the therapists was customized to concentrate on Wilson’s problem. After completing physical therapy, Dr. Wang concluded that therapy was not producing the results he desired. It was determined that surgery was required to alleviate Wilson’s pain and repair the damage. Dr. Wang discussed the surgery in detail. He explained it was a minimally invasive procedure that would require an overnight stay. Wilson’s surgery was a success. “Dr. Wang was great. He placed the incision on my neck between a fold so that eventually you would not even notice the scar.”

Life After Treatment

Jonathan Wilson and physical therapist Dan Kershner.

Wilson has been able to return to his normal activities. “Before the surgery, I was in pain, I had no strength in my left arm and my mobility was greatly reduced. Now, the strength is back in my left arm, and my mobility is almost where it was before I was injured. I have been able to do my job and be an active part of my children’s lives.” Dr. Wang has continued to follow Wilson’s progress. “I attended follow up visits with Dr. Wang and physical therapy sessions after my surgery.” Wilson expressed how thankful he was for the care he received from everyone at the Spine Center. “These people are amazing! They are top notch and very knowledgeable. If something ever happened again, that’s where I would go. I would also say that if you have a spine or neck injury, don’t wait to get medical help. Go to the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center because they can help you. I wouldn’t be where I am today without them.” To schedule an appointment, contact the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Spine Center at 281-313-BACK (2225).

In turn, the organization has fostered partnerships with pillars of the Fort Bend county community for years to come. One such pairing is with Stafford-based Texas Direct Auto, the world’s largest independent auto dealership, who is proud to team up with the Skeeters again for the third consecutive year in 2014 with the goal of making the upcoming season the best yet. “Texas Direct Auto has been a true asset to the Sugar Land Skeeters organization,” said Chris Jones, General Manager for the Sugar Land Skeeters. “Our partnership has allowed the Skeeters to enhance our presence in the community, as well as increase our brand power by linking ourselves to grass root companies with great reputations like Texas Direct Auto’s.” As a founding sponsor, Texas Direct Auto has a noticeable presence at Constellation Field. In addition to car displays in Constellation Field in Sugar Land.

the front plaza every Saturday night and a vintage, baseball-shaped bullpen cart, the Texas Direct Auto message is featured prominently along the Skeeters’ bullpen and inside the “Buzz Shop,” where every purchase of $50 or more in Skeeters merchandise earns fans a free t-shirt! And kids of all ages are welcome to come out to the dealership off of the Southwest Freeway at Airport Road for pictures with Swatson, the Skeeters’ adorable life-sized mosquito mascot, on three separate dates yet to be announced. Skeeters’ fans will also want to mark their calendars for the two game entitlements hosted by Texas Direct Auto this year. The first 2,000 fans through the gates on Friday, May 24th will receive a limited-edition Skeeter blue camouflage fleece blanket, and on Friday, August 2nd, Texas Direct Auto will give away the third edition of their coveted, collectible youth jerseys to the first 2,000 attendees. Father’s Joy Charity Golf Classic Celebrates Eight Years Celebrating the blessing of all children with special needs

F

ather’s Joy is proud to announce the eighth year of its Noah Consulting Father’s Joy Charity Golf Classic scheduled for Friday, May 16, 2014 at Wildcat Golf Club! Founded in 2003 by Kristin and Shannon Tassin, Father’s Joy is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving families and prospective families of children with disabilities. After the birth of their first daughter, Abigail, who has Down syndrome, Kristin and Shannon were given extremely negative information about raising a child with a disability and were offered little hope. In an effort to change such negative attitudes and perceptions, educate communities, offer hope and support to families, and celebrate children with special needs, Kristin and Shannon founded Father’s Joy. For more than ten years, Father’s Joy has partnered with Fort Bend and Houston-area organizations such as Texas Children’s Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine, the Arc of Fort Bend, the University of Houston, The Bridge Fellowship, Houston Young Lawyers Association and many others to provide parents, educators, medical professionals, attorneys and advocates with educational programs, advocacy workshops, informational materials, Bible studies, conferences and awareness programs.

The mission of Father’s Joy is to celebrate the blessing of all children with special needs and, with that in mind, the Charity Golf Classic will feature again this year several very special guests, referred to as “Green Masters.” Father’s Joy Green Masters are young golfers with disabilities who will putt for teams on select holes throughout the course, giving the teams a chance to gain strokes. More importantly, it offers golfers a chance to get to know these remarkable young people and see firsthand the blessing they are to their families and communities.

To register for the Eighth Annual Noah Consulting Father’s Joy Charity Golf Classic please visit http://www.fathersjoy.org/golf/.

Jim Briggs, Abigail Tassin, Matt Becker, Lexi Villarreal, Frank Zendejas, Prasanna Balakrishnan

In addition, last year we were inspired by several teams who decided to ramp up the fun factor and dress in wacky attire. So, this year Father’s Joy is encouraging all teams to come dressed in fun, creative attire. Whether it be silly, themed, or inspirational, the most creatively dressed team will receive a prize! The Noah Consulting Father’s Joy Charity Golf Classic completely funds Father’s Joy’s programs for the year. The event will feature a scramble format, lunch, team prizes, door prizes and a raffle.

We encourage you to join us for a day of fun and inspiration! For more information on Father’s Joy and its programs visit www.fathersjoy.org or call 281-630-2885.

The Psychology of Investing

M

any times we make investing too hard. Through the years, I have found investor psychology plays a major role in when to buy and when to sell. Read the following, and see if you can determine where we are in the current cycle. Also, think about where you were one year ago. EVENT

MARKET DIRECTION

Your best friend and neighbor has a cocktail party to which you are not invited.

The market is at the bottom. Call all of your clients, and tell them to buy if anyone will answer the phone.

A friend invites you to a cocktail party. However, when the other guests see you, they move to the other side of the bar.

The market is in a basing formation and will rally shortly.

You are attending a cocktail party. People who know you come over to ask how the market closed today and what you think they should buy.

The market is in a major upswing.

You are attending a cocktail party. When people hear you are an investment advisor, they come over and introduce themselves and discuss the market.

The market has had a large rally, and there is good group rotation.

A client invites you to a cocktail party. When you enter the room, he asks everyone to be quiet for a moment while he introduces you to all assembled as “his investment adviser.”

The market is nearing a top.

Your best friend invites you to a cocktail party and dinner in your honor.

The market has reached the top. Call your clients the next morning, and tell them to sell everything. Of course, they won’t as they will think you are kidding. Therefore, sell everything you own so you will have the money to buy your own drinks as the market drops.

Colwell Family By Michelle Johnson

pril is National Autism Awareness Month, which was designated in 1970 by the United States to educate our communities about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Autism is a developmental disorder that affects the way our brain processes information. It involves a person’s ability to interact and communicate with others. Typically, autism appears during the first three years of life, but the severity of symptoms is different for each individual. Some symptoms may not be defined as well as others and may be misdiagnosed. This is the reason that education of this disorder is so important, and early diagnosis of this disorder is essential.

Nicole and Linda Colwell.

Search for Answers

Jeff and Nicole Colwell.

For the Colwell family of Sugar Land, the search for answers surrounding problems their daughter Nicole was having was not an easy one. Linda Colwell, Nicole's mom, explained, "When Nicole was two-years-old, I noticed that she was not speaking much or trying to communicate with her peers. Nicole had frequent ear infections and had tubes put in her ears. I thought maybe the issues she was having were related to not being able to hear properly." According to her mom, Nicole had been in daycare since the age of six months and remained until she turned three. "I did not get any reports from

26

the daycare about any behavioral issues or problems. I took some time off right before her third birthday, and it became apparent to me that she was not developing socially or academically as well as her peers."

Knowledge is Power Colwell spoke with Nicole's pediatrician, and he suggested speech therapy. After having Nicole tested, it was determined that she needed speech therapy. Nicole attended two 30 minute sessions every week. After further research, Colwell discovered that the Fort Bend Independent School District offered a program for children with developmen-

tal delays. After being evaluated at the age of three and a half, Nicole was enrolled at the local elementary school and attended two 30 minute sessions each week. Even with four sessions of speech therapy per week for six months, Nicole was still not progressing as expected for her peer level. Nicole began to have some behavioral issues, and Colwell suspected that her daughter may be autistic. "I asked her private speech therapist if she was aware of any program in the area that I might research on this disorder." Colwell found there was a program in Rosenberg: Texana Children's Center for Autism. A meeting was set and a psychiatric evaluation was scheduled to determine if Nicole was autistic. Thankfully, Colwell's search for answers led her to Texana.

A Light at the End of the Tunnel Colwell needed a full day program for Nicole, and she found that Texana offered both half day and full day programs for autistic children. In March of 2013, Nicole was enrolled at Texana. In the beginning, Nicole was only able to communicate with a very limited amount of single words. She was able to understand the alphabet and numbers, but she was unable to communicate them. One of her behavioral issues consisted of throwing herself on the ground and crying when she could not complete a task, such as opening the door to let one of her cats inside the house. She would begin to cry and could not be consoled. Nicole attends Texana's Bridge PreK program. The first part of the day,

Ruth Alfery and Nicole Colwell in Florida.

she has one-on-one instruction, and the second half is in a classroom with other autistic children, as well as children that have no developmental issues. Nicole benefits from both. She has learned how to be flexible by having different therapists for her one-on-one instruction and observing appropriate classroom behavior from the children in the Bridge Pre-K program. According to Lindsey Smith, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst with Texana, initial testing is done on the children and appropriate programs are written to suit each child. Their progress is monitored and adjusted as needed. Texana also offers monthly parent meetings, which are a very valuable tool for both the parent and teacher, to monitor progress. Parents and teachers express concerns or problems they experience, and in turn, adjustments are initiated to correct any issues.

Amazing Transformation Smith reported on Nicole's amazing progress. "I started working with Nicole in September of 2013. It used to take her a long time to warm up to other therapists when she did not interact with them on a daily basis. Now, she greets them by name when they speak to her. I would say that her most improved area has been her social interaction with peers and adults. She now uses three to four word sentences when speaking with friends. She loves to play outside and pull her friends around in a wagon. Nicole now engages friends into activities as opposed to just joining in with them." Colwell stated that Nicole's progress has been amazing. She has gained confidence and likes to make her own decisions. Nicole can hold conversations with others, and she has learned how to take turns. "We were so fortunate to have found Texana. She would not be where she is today without them." Nicole is on track to enter a kindergarten program this fall which is age appropriate. Her future looks brighter than ever.

HERE IS THE CHURCH, WHERE IS THE STEEPLE? Driving around Houston, you will notice that church architecture varies from one church to the next — some are traditional and some are contemporary. But if you are looking for a steeple to find a church, you will overlook a growing number of churches that meet in uncommon venues, including homes, schools, and hotel ballrooms. For example, the Sienna Campus of Houston’s First Baptist Church calls a shopping center their home. Located in The Crossing at Sienna Ranch at 4309 Sienna Parkway two miles south of Highway 6, the church shares an address with Snap Fitness, Bravo Creative Arts, and Jim’s Taekwon-Do Academy. The property is managed by Rubicon Realty. The church had been using about 3,800 square feet on the second floor of the building, including a large room for worship services and special gatherings, and classrooms for children. Recently, they leased and built out additional space on both the first and second floors, expanding their total area to about 13,500 square feet. The new space on the first floor is approximately 6,500 square feet and includes a new worship center that holds over 200 people. In addition, the new first floor space features a foyer and coffee bar, as well as preschool classrooms. On the second floor, newly leased space will be converted into additional gathering space for children, students, and adults. “This is a great location for our church,” says Campus Pastor Jeff Rees. “It’s easy to get to, there’s plenty of parking, and God has continued to provide additional space for us to grow here.”

ONE HELICOPTER. LOTS OF EGGS. ENDLESS FUN. Sat, Apr 19 @ 9a — Sienna Amphitheatre Preschool - 5th Grade | Breakfast available | HoustonsFirst.org/Sienna Hosted by Houston’s First Baptist Church — Sienna Campus

During construction, the church held a special event in the space that would become their new worship center. At the Foundation of Prayer gathering, members were invited to write on the foundation prayers, favorite scriptures, and the names of family and friends for whom they are praying. “Going forward, we will literally be praying over these names of friends, family, and others,” says Rees. A similar Foundation of Prayer was held at the church’s campuses at The Loop (7401 Katy Freeway) and in Downtown (1010 Lamar). The church’s Cypress campus meets at a Smith Middle School (10300 Warner Smith Blvd). The first Sunday in the Sienna Campus’ new space was March 30. The church gathers each Sunday for Life Bible Studies at 9:30 am and a worship service at 11 am.

(On Easter Sunday, they’ll have worship services at both 9:30 am and 11 am.) Pastor Gregg Matte’s message on Sunday mornings at the church’s campus at The Loop is shown at the Sienna Campus via live video stream; some Sundays, Rees delivers the message in person. Worship is led by a live band, and Rees and other staff members provide the personal connection. “We may not look like a church on the outside, but that’s not what matters,” says Rees. “Love, grace, community — that’s what makes a church a church, and people will find that at the Sienna Campus of Houston’s First Baptist Church.”

The Magnificent Tiger Ball and Fort Bend Supporters Celebrate Japan By Zeenat Kassam Mitha

The Asia Society Texas Center.

T

he diversity and culture of Fort Bend residents was evident at The Asia Society Texas Center Tiger Ball as so many supported the event by celebrating Japan in the beautiful landmark building. The Tiger Ball sold out this year, well in advance, and 100 seats were added to accommodate the community-at-large. “Our membership has grown over three times in the last year,” commented Board Member Nancy Allen. Fort Bend, which has a large Asian population, has many residents who have seen the value of being a member or partnering with The Asia Society Texas Center for its programs. “Some of the most coveted programs, speakers, entertainment and learning about Asian cultures happen here,” said Board Member Y. Ping Sun. “It is no wonder that Fort Bend residents flock in large numbers to programs associated with The Asia Society Texas Center.” The ethnic attire, from various countries, created a colorful medley of all things Asian. This year, The Tiger Ball celebrated Japan. The evening began with fresh sushi, steak tetaki skewers and lamb “Turbans” with pinenuts and continued with an array of divine delights that could only be found in

Ike and Zeenat Mitha at The Asia Society Texas Center Tiger Ball.

the most coveted restaurants serving a Japanese dinner. Cherry blossoms were everywhere, in all rooms, in the gallery and in the outside reception area welcoming guests with their beauty, simplicity and fragrant smell. The chairs of the event this year, Glen Yoshiaki Gondo and Donna Fujimoto Cole, expressed their need to make everyone feel like they were experiencing Japan. It was back in 1995 when The Asia Society Texas Center’s Board of Directors voted to build a home for its programs. At that time, the offices were housed in a rental facility. Renowned Japanese architect Yoshio Taniguchi was selected by the Board to design the building, which is now located in the Houston’s Museum District. Taniguchi is best-known in the United States for his renovation and expansion of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The building was completed in early fall 2011. The 40,000-square-foot Center features the 273-seat Brown Foundation Performing Arts Theater, Louisa Stude Sarofim Gallery, Edward Rudge Allen III Education Center, Fayez Sarofim Grand Hall and more. It opened to the public April 14, 2012. “This magnificent center is the bridge for connecting all Asian Cultures housed under one roof,” stated Chairman Charles Foster. The community from Fort Bend that supports the Center does so to enrich learning for themselves and for others. Every Asian culture can send proposals for exhibitions, programs and events. Schedules are also usually determined 12 to 36 months in advance. There are also event rooms that can be rented at

the Center. There are a high number of proposals and requests for rentals, so they are looked at very thoroughly. The history of The Asia Society began with the foresight of Houstonians headed by former First Lady Barbara Bush and former Ambassador Roy M. Huffington, who established The Asia Society Texas Center in 1979. Understanding the vision of John D. Rockefeller, III, the founder of Asia Society New York in 1956, they recognized the need to educate Americans about Asia and create closer ties between Houston and the peoples and institutions of Asia. With 11 centers across the globe, The Asia Society is the leading educational organization dedicated to promoting mutual understanding and strengthening partnerships among the peoples, leaders, and institutions of Asia and the United States in a global context. Across the fields of arts, business, culture, education and policy, the Society provides insight, generates ideas and promotes collaboration to address present challenges and create a shared future. One of the best things about The Asia Society Texas Center is that it is an affiliate of the Asia Society global network. “Since the opening of the Texas Center, Asia Society has taken its place as a major educational and cultural institution in the region, the driving force in transforming Greater Houston into an Asia-Pacific city,” said Executive Director Bonna Kol.

absolutely! HEALTHY LIVING

Hours of Sitting: What’s Your Cancer Risk?

M

ost people spend the day sitting behind a desk. They commute home to relax, sit and watch TV, read a book or play computer games. Most Americans easily spend more than 8 hours of their day sitting. And, sitting for several hours a day puts one’s health at risk – even if they exercise regularly. "Extended sitting raises your risk for colorectal, ovarian and endometrial cancers and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma," said Karen Basen-Engquist, Ph.D., professor of Behavioral Science at MD Anderson. It also increases risk for obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Luckily, reducing sitting time can be simple. "At least once an hour, get up and move. Stand while you’re on the phone or walk around the house during TV commercial breaks," BasenEngquist said. "A few minutes of light activity throughout the day can add up and help lower your cancer risks." Basen-Engquist shares more tips to reduce prolonged sitting.

Cut Back on Screen Time Put down the remote. Research shows that for every hour of television a person watches after age 25, their life expectancy goes down by almost 22 minutes. But the real culprit isn't the TV. It's the time they spend sitting

when they’re binge watching. "Cut back on TV, video game and computer screen time, and you'll be more likely to engage in active behavior," Basen-Engquist said. Choose an active-play video game that'll boost the heart rate or watch a favorite show while riding an exercise bike.

Then, they use charts and graphs to display activity over time. Knowing the steps taken, or not taken, during the day can be useful. Basen-Engquist uses a pedometer and tries to get at least 500 steps an hour.

Build Activity Into the Day "Even short spurts of moderate to vigorous physical activity can get your heart pumping and improve your health," Basen-Engquist said. “So, build activity into the day.” Park at the far end of the parking lot, take the stairs or walk while on the phone. Tidying the house also can limit couch time.

Reduce Sitting at Work Most adults sit at their job, but there are simple ways to move more without them disrupting their work. Have a walking meeting, stand during seminars or perform desk exercises. Ask co-workers to join in taking laps around the office during lunch. Change the work environment. Office equipment, like standing and treadmill desks, are gaining popularity. "Working from an upright position uses more muscles, expends more energy and burns more calories than sitting," Basen-Engquist said.

Choose an Active Leisure Activity "Relax with an activity that doesn't require sitting," Basen-Engquist said. "Take a fun dance class, work in the garden or walk around the neighborhood. You'll burn about 140 extra calories per day to help you maintain a healthy weight."

Use Technology Most email providers will allow people to schedule an alert to remind themselves to move every hour. There's an app for everything, including ones that remind people to take a get-upand-move break. Some apps also provide tools to track physical activity.

Get Regular Exercise Cutting back on sitting time is good for one’s health. But regular exercise is still needed to further reduce cancer risks. Aim for two and a half hours of moderate physical activity or an hour and a half of vigorous physical activity each week. Fort Bend County Museum Association’s annual fundraising gala, the Lone Star Stomp, returns to George Ranch Historical Park on Saturday, April 12th. This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of Fort Bend County’s most loved charity events. The theme for Lone Star Stomp XXV, “Southern Belles & Beaux,” radiates classic elegance and true Texas hospitality. In celebration of the Stomp’s silver anniversary, the indoor arena at George Ranch Historical Park will be decorated in royal blue, silver and white, with magnolia flowers throughout. Lynn Hewitt is serving as Chairman of the Event Committee, with Melody Hess as Live Auction Chair, Diane Elko as Silver Star Auction Chair and Kathleen Randall as Silent Auction Chair. “Many people have watched the Lone Star Stomp grow from being under the stars at Dr. Cooley’s ranch to what the event is today. It is amazing to see the spirit and the support for the Fort Bend County Museum Association throughout the last 25 years,” said Hewitt. The Fort Bend Museum Docent Society has been selected as the Honorary Chairs for the 2014 Stomp. “In addition to celebrating the Stomp’s silver anniversary, we will be thanking the Fort Bend Museum Docent Society for all the hard work and hours of volunteerism they

absolutely! AUTO REVIEW By Steve Kursar

2014 HONDA ODYSSEY T

he 2014 Honda Odyssey just keeps getting better. The good engineers and designers at Honda have brought out the latest version of their very popular minivan and have made it even better and more helpful to moms and dads everywhere. There’s a reason why the Odyssey is the best-selling minivan: It’s perfect around town, as well as ideal for road trips. There’s nothing that the Honda Odyssey can’t do. The first Honda Odyssey found its way onto American highways back in 1994. It wasn’t the first minivan (Chrysler introduced their Caravan over a decade earlier) but it caught on with the American public with its reliability and versatility. Minivans seemed to be everywhere as families migrated from station wagons and large SUVs to the

more fuel efficient minivans. As a result, several automakers stopping making minivans in favor of crossovers. But luckily for us, Honda stuck with the Odyssey, and now, we’re living through the fourth generation of their minivan. It’s grown considerably, about two feet since the first ones, but it’s also become more welcoming to growing families. For instance, you can opt for a large, no make that giant, screen DVD coupled with a sound system that makes you feel as if you’re at the local multiplex. With a base MSRP of $28,825, every Honda Odyssey is powered by a 248 hp, 3.5 liter V6 engine mated to a sixspeed automatic transmission. EPA estimated fuel economy is 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway, about the same as we used to get in family sedans. The Odyssey can accelerate from zero to 60 in less than eight seconds, which is awfully quick considering the size of the vehicle and the engine.

Did I mention that you can get the Odyssey equipped with almost anything you and the kids would want in a minivan? For instance, that widescreen DVD can handle both a movie and a video game at the same time. How about a built-in powerful vacuum? The HondaVAC includes a replaceable filter and canister bag with nozzle accessories all neatly tucked in the driver’s side of the rear cargo area. Quick cleanups are now a snap no matter the location with an integrated hose that reaches into every corner of the Odyssey’s cabin. If you need the room and the utilitarian qualities of a minivan, take a look at the 2014 Honda Odyssey. But be careful once you take it for a test drive because you may get hooked. Just relax, you’ll love it. Follow Steve Kursur at KursarOnCars. blogspot.com.

Quick Tips to Organize Your Move • See moving as an opportunity to organize and purge. Make "donate," "pitch," and "sell" piles in each room for belongings you no longer want or need. • Arrange for a charity to come pick up items you plan to donate at the end of your packing schedule. • Paper is heavy, and there is no need to move junk mail or outdated documents. Shred paper with personal information, and send it all to the recycling bin. • Packing can become a trip down memory lane. Resist the temptation and get items packed rather than reminiscing. You will have plenty of time to go back and leisurely sift through your belongings after the move. • Create a moving binder with plastic sleeves for all your important moving information. It will be your goto guide on moving day. • There is no need to pack a can of beans that expired two years ago. Throw out expired pantry items that are past their prime. Volunteer Leaders Kirsten Overgaard and Joseph Buckle are ready to bring the shine to the Third Annual Car Wash for Kids with the help of Dr. Teresa Cody of C & C Dental.

Come April 13th, the Hope for Three Teen Huddle will wipe on and wipe off all in the effort of autism awareness. The Third Annual Car Wash for Kids will take place at C & C Dental, located at 17003

Suds, Duds, Beauty and Haircuts Southwest Freeway in Sugar Land. Teens from area schools will be on hand to wash cars from 11 am to 3 pm. The cost is free of charge; however, donations are welcome. Just as the teens are putting a shine to community vehicles, Beauty Indulgence Day Spa, located less than three minutes away from the car wash event at 4715 Sweetwater Blvd. in Sugar Land, will pamper all patrons with a $24 haircut and blow dry – a $65 value. Half of the haircut proceeds benefit the Hope for Three Family Resources Program. Stylists will be available to cut, style and cater to the community from 11 am to 5 pm. Both events will be lots of fun with one mission in mind: autism awareness. “There’s nothing like witnessing the members of our young community showing why it’s cool to care for another human being, especially a child with autism,” said Sharon Buckle, Hope for Three Volunteer and mom to a child on the autism spectrum.

Along with Beauty Indulgence’s contributions, the company will participate in the Second Annual Strike Out Autism Family Fun Day, set for April 27th, as well as offer an afternoon of soothing indulgence for three autism moms who will be chosen during a drawing. “Our partnering with Hope for Three is our way of giving back to the community,” said Shaida Kootahi, Beauty Indulgence owner. “You have to preach the beauty inside and outside.” The salon will also raise funds at the event for clean water at home and around the world in observation of Earth Month. Keeping with the eco-friendly effort is Eco-Touch Premium Car Care, a Green America Certified Company, that will provide non-toxic, bio-degradable supplies for the waterless car wash. Car Wash for Kids and Beauty Indulgence are part of a number of Hope for Three events and programs scheduled during April Autism Awareness Month. High School HOT SHOT

By Lauren Dante Benoit

Rachel Long: Molding Her Future

R

achel Long is a senior at Fort Bend Christian Academy. Attending Fort Bend Christian Academy for 13 years, Rachel has made her mark on the school by excelling in the classroom, making beautiful art pieces and playing the field in soccer. With an exciting future ahead of her, Rachel is focused and determined to continue her education, grow in her Christian beliefs and pursue leadership opportunities that will allow her to impact others’ lives in a positive and meaningful way. As an artist, Rachel has awed people with her beautiful pieces. After learning about the basics of art, Rachel chose a specialty of pottery and ceramics. “I enjoy working with clay because I can make things that are both practical and beautiful,” said Rachel. “I have made abstract sculptures and pitchers that can actually be used in people’s homes.” Rachel competes annually with her pieces of work. As a sophomore, Rachel won first at the state competition in ceramics for her gunmetal pitcher. She has won eight medals over the past few years from the district and state competitions for her unique artwork. This year, Rachel is submitting her senior portfolio for competition, which is a compilation of her artwork over the past three years. Rachel feels very lucky to have the opportunity to compete in ceramics because Fort Bend Christian Academy has an excellent equipped art studio. In addition to excelling in the art studio, Rachel is a very intelligent

Rachel

student. She is ranked in the top eight percent of her class and is enrolled in advanced placement classes. She has already earned 12 college credits through her hard work and effort during high school. Rachel’s favorite class is her current apologetics class. “The apologetics class has given me a strong foundation of my faith as I enter college,” said Rachel. “I have learned how to discuss my faith with others.” Rachel’s faith is important to her. She is involved with her youth group and was on the group’s leadership team last year. As a member of the leadership team, Rachel was responsible for organizing and executing the youth group’s various activities such as the Spring Break Retreat, which was an overnight stay at a Bible camp. Every year, Rachel travels on a mission trip with Fort Bend Christian Academy. Her Eagle Week trips have been extremely impactful as she has grown in her Christian beliefs while helping others first-hand. As a sophomore, she visited a Native American Indian reservation in Arizona, and last

year, she traveled to Belize. This year, Rachel will be traveling to Costa Rica with her senior class to help run a children’s club and assist with building projects. Rachel is familiar with working as a team to accomplish a goal. This year, Rachel played on Fort Bend Christian Academy’s soccer team, where she is a defender. “I like the team aspect of soccer because we work as a team to win or lose,” said Rachel. “All of my teammates work hard on the field, and we have a lot of fun off of the field as well.” Even though Rachel is involved in many different aspects at school, she still makes time to hold two jobs. Since she was 13 years old, she has cleaned an office building once a week. She also is a nanny for two kids during the summer. It is evident that Rachel has excellent time management skills and is a hard working young adult. In the fall, Rachel will be attending Texas A&M University. She will be majoring in business and plans on obtaining her MBA. Rachel is looking forward to attending A&M and becoming involved with different organizations on campus. Rachel is a first-class student and role model for her peers. Not only is she intelligent, having never received a grade lower than a B, but she is also a kind-hearted and loving person that aims to live by her Christian faith every day. Congratulations Rachel on your many accomplishments in high school; we know that the future holds great things for you!

The Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball recently announced that the club has extended a formal Spring Training invitation to former Houston Rocket and seven-time National Basketball Association All-Star Tracy McGrady. The announcement was made by Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti and General Manager Chris Jones. “I got called into the skipper’s office after practice, and he let me know that I was going to be a part of the Skeeters’ Spring Training camp,” said McGrady. “This has been a goal of mine, and it’s a great challenge. I’m looking forward to competing, and I’m excited about this great opportunity.” The 6-foot-8, right-handed pitcher has maintained a strict pitching regimen and workout schedule since last fall, following his official retirement from basketball. Last month, the Sugar Land Skeeters released a statement in response to McGrady’s public acknowledgement of his pursuit to pitch for the club. The organization expressed appreciation for McGrady’s talent and interest, as well as a commitment to continue monitoring his progress. “We’re intrigued by the progress Tracy has made thus far and really commend him for putting in the work,” said Gaetti.

First Class Service at Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery offers the following surgical procedures conveniently on-site: breast augmentation and lift, implant exchange, tummy tuck, mommy makeover, face lift, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, otoplasty, liposuction and body and neck lift. While surgical procedures are an important part of helping patients look and feel their best, Dr. Eric Humble believes that rejuvenation, like health and wellness, does not start with surgery but instead is founded in nutrition, lifestyle and attitude. “While surgery can be the catalyst for creating a healthier lifestyle, there is more to overall health and wellness, and rejuvenation is an important part of that process. Rejuvenation helps one see on the outside the way they feel on the inside,” said Dr. Humble. “I still remember the first face lift patient I operated on. After her operation, she began exercising, changed her diet and renewed her love of life. As a plastic surgeon, my reward begins with my goal of bringing out my patients’ love of life.” With integrity and honesty, Dr. Humble consults with each patient in depth to find the best ways to enhance his or her facial features or body shape. In an effort to reach the optimum, most natural results, Dr. Humble gives his expert recommendation on each individual case, even if the course of action means a less invasive – and less expensive – method to achieve the desired aesthetic look. Colon Cancer Screening by Dr. Gregory Shannon Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States in women and men. Each year, approximately one-third of people who develop colorectal cancer die of the disease. There is a popular misconception that colorectal cancer occurs more commonly in men, but this is not true. Women are equally affected. There is a general agreement by experts that all adults undergo screening beginning at age 50. Many people with colon cancer experience no symptoms because most cases begin as small clumps of abnormal cells called polyps. When symptoms appear, they likely will vary depending on the cancer’s size and location in the large intestine (colon). Some signs and symptoms of colon cancer include a change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding or blood in the stool, abdominal discomfort, a feeling that your bowel does not empty completely after defecating and unexplained weight loss. Colon polyps are abnormal growths that may eventually turn into cancer. The good news is that not all polyps are pre-cancerous. Screening tests can find pre-cancerous polyps so they can be removed before they have a chance to turn into cancer. A colonoscopy is the most effective screening method. It is a painless procedure – most people sleep through it. Talk to your physician about colon cancer prevention. Dr. Gregory Shannon is a board certified Gastroenterologist with Baylor College of Medicine practicing in the Houston-Sugar Land area. For more information, call 281-2011338.

Considerations for Patients Who May Benefit from a Hysterectomy The leading indication for hysterectomy in America is bleeding abnormalities most often caused by uterine fibroids. However, other problems can also require hysterectomy, including uterine prolapse, malignancy, pelvic inflammatory disease and pelvic pain. Methods of hysterectomy, which means to remove the uterus, plus or minus the cervix, range from abdominal, laparoscopic or vaginal to da Vinci robotics. Often times, recovery from the minimally invasive techniques involves small incisions and only an overnight hospitalization. Whether or not the ovaries and tubes need to be removed at the same time depends on the woman’s age, personal/familial risks of cancer, indication for hysterectomy and personal preferences. The decision to remove the ovaries should involve a detailed consultation with the gynecologist to explain the risks and benefits to the procedure. Discussion should include symptoms of menopause that may result from having the ovaries removed in addition to options of natural lifestyle behavior, bio identical or prescription estrogen replacement therapy. Before committing to the important decision of a hysterectomy, women should thoroughly understand the procedure, course of recovery and what benefits should result from it. Sometimes there can be alternative options to a hysterectomy, so explore this with the doctor. If hysterectomy is the ultimate recommendation, women should be proactive with their questions and concerns. Studies show that a substantial number of women who have hysterectomies report marked improvement of their presenting symptoms in addition to their overall physical and mental health. For more information, contact Dr. Nguyen-Tran at 713-578-3823.

Spring Renewal and Restoration in Four Simple Steps Spring is in full swing, which means it is time to renew and restore yourself on the inside and outside. If you want to experience a life full of health and vitality, simply follow these six steps to begin enjoying life again. • Balance Hormones: Hormonal balance and thyroid function are the foundation for health. If symptoms of low energy, low libido, hair loss, mood swings, insomnia or weight gain feel like an unwelcome guest, consider balancing your hormones and/or thyroid. Successful treatment cannot be achieved without proper testing. Hormones should be Bio-Identical Hormones for maximum health benefits and lowest risk factors. • Restore Adrenal Function/ Adequate Sleep: Get at least seven to eight hours of sleep per night. Not only will adequate sleep improve energy levels, mood and productivity, but it also allows the body to rebuild itself to reduce adrenal fatigue. • Exercise/Clean Eating Plan: Spring is the perfect time to exercise outside and create healthful dishes with lots of fresh veggies and fruits. A combination of cardio and resistance exercises at least four to five times per week along with healthy, “clean” food choices can help maintain a healthy weight, as well as a healthy outlook on life. • Eliminate Allergies: It’s that time of year again! Arm yourself against the sneezing, congestion, headaches and watery eyes by treating allergies with painfree sublingual allergy drops. Have your food sensitivities and gluten tested as well to help repair your GI system and decrease inflammation. For more information, call 281-313-7435 or visit www.drshel.com. See ad on page 3.

What Young Men Should Know Now to Protect Against Cancer Men in their 20s and 30s might feel invincible, but they too can develop cancer. The most common cancer found in men ages 15 to 34 is testicular cancer. Testicular cancer rates are now twice as high for white American men than they were 40 years ago, and the rates for African American men are beginning to rise. While testicular cancer is essentially unpreventable with risk factors present at birth, early detection and treatment are key to overcoming this disease. More than 95 percent of patients are cancer-free after completing treatment, especially if the cancer is detected early enough before it spreads to other parts of the body. Self-examinations and consultations with physicians are the best ways to ensure early detection. Also, avoiding unhealthy lifestyle choices now – smoking, overeating, heavy drinking, a sedentary lifestyle and unsafe sex – in their young adult years could reduce mens’ chances of developing other types of cancer later. Clean, healthy living might not make a person the life of the party, but it certainly increases the chances of that person living longer with a higher quality of life. Sanjay Sethi, M.D., is a medical oncologist at Texas Oncology – Sugar Land, located at 1350 First Colony Boulevard. Zachary R. Mucher, M.D., is an urologist at Texas Urology Specialist – Sugar Land, located at 17510 West Grand Parkway, Suite 420. For more information, visit www.texasoncology.com. See ad on page 13.

Have One or More Missing Teeth? Have you delayed treatment because of the high cost? Dental implants have been a revolutionary breakthrough for people with missing teeth, but the high cost has prevented some from seeking care. Well, great news! Several times a year, C & C Dental hosts a dental implant course taught by Dr. Todd Engel, an international speaker and lecturer who founded The Engel Institute. One of the highlights of the course is live treatment on patients. Class size is limited, but if you are selected to participate, the cost savings is huge. Normally, a dental implant is priced at about $2000. Patients for the course pay only $699! Each and every patient is seen by a licensed dentist and is overseen by Dr. Engel himself. The facilities at C & C Dental are brand new and state-ofthe-art. Here is what one patient had to say about his experience: “I kept putting off getting an implant because of the price. The course was a great experience, very professional. I even returned for another class. Now, I have two implants and paid less than the going price for one!” Call C & C Dental at 281-2420241 for a free screening to see if you qualify for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Body Contouring After Weight Loss Every year, people seek new weight loss resolutions. Some choose medical weight loss and surgical procedures including gastric band, gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. Others incorporate significant lifestyle modifications with diet and exercise. Any of these options yield wonderful results with overall health benefits in hypertension, cholesterol and diabetes. Most individuals are pleased with the results but feel dissatisfied with excess, sagging skin particularly in the areas of their breast, abdomen, arms and thighs. Excess skin increases the risk of rashes, infections and poor hygiene. In order to maintain a new physique, patients are encouraged to continue exercising, but this can be cumbersome while carrying excess skin and weight. Dr. Ravi Somayazula has a great interest in working with these patients and understands weight loss skin changes and contouring abilities. Breasts tend to sag and become smaller, but a breast lift and potentially breast implants can normalize their shape. Excess abdominal skin tends to cause lower back problems from extra weight, but body contouring can minimize that. Some individuals feel uncomfortable wearing sleeveless shirts, but an arm lift removes the excess arm skin. These procedures help shape and tone the body after extreme weight loss and provide an additional avenue for an overall smoother shape. Patients who have undergone these surgeries feel that their weight loss journeys have come full circle and have a newfound confidence. Some of these procedures are now covered by many insurance plans. For more information or to schedule a consultation at Body by Ravi, call 281-242-1061.

Getting to the Heart Through the Wrist Coronary angioplasty is a surgical procedure that opens narrow or blocked arteries in the heart. A catheter, or flexible tube, is inserted into an artery to deliver balloons and stents to open the damaged arteries. Traditionally, the catheter is inserted into the femoral artery in the groin, but surgical breakthroughs now allow insertion of the catheter into the radial artery of the wrist. According to the professional cardiology journal Circulation, utilization of the transradial, or wrist, approach has increased 13-fold in the five-year period from 2007 to 2012. The transradial angioplasty has been used extensively in Europe and other countries since it was first performed 20 years ago. Bajid Basit, M.D., a cardiologist affiliated with Memorial Hermann who sees patients in Sugar Land, Rosenberg and Wharton, says transradial angioplasty is often safer than the traditional femoral artery procedure. “The transradial approach significantly reduces complications for patients and provides a higher degree of comfort,” said Dr. Basit who is board-certified in cardiovascular diseases, internal medicine and interventional cardiology. “Wrist access is almost painless and allows for a much more comfortable recovery after the procedure without the need for prolonged bed rest.” Ninety percent of patients are candidates for the transradial procedure. Patients who have undergone both groin and transradial procedures overwhelmingly prefer entry through the wrist. Coronary heart disease is very common and may lead to chest pain, heart failure or even heart attack if not promptly diagnosed and treated. For more information or to schedule an appointment with a Memorial Hermann cardiologist, visit memorialhermann.org. See ad on page 33. TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

Plastic Surgery Is Truly Art and Science Plastic surgery is truly an art as well as science. It takes precision, dexterity and mastery of surgical techniques to perform complex surgeries safely and reliably. On the other hand, cosmetic surgery also requires surgeons to become experts of the human form. Mastering the craft of cosmetic procedures requires both an artistic passion and talent for the human figure. With extensive surgical training in two residencies, two board certifications and a strong art background, Dr. John T. LASIK Myths and Facts As with facts, there are myths that come along. When it comes to LASIK, the theory that rumors travel faster than the truth holds true. The best clinic delivering exceptional LASIK treatment – and clearing up any myths – is the Sugarland Eye & Laser Center in Houston. LASIK Facts: • It takes just three minutes on average to treat an eye. • The patient is not at risk if he or she blinks, sneezes or coughs during surgery. Good clinics have eye tracking technology that constantly track the movement of the eye to deliver the laser beam. • Laser is ultraviolet light. Only a fraction of this light is required during surgery. • A laser is a harmless wave of light that does not cause vision distortions or blindness. • The right age for this treatment is 21 years, and there is no upward age limit. • Patients affected with presbyopia have been found to respond to LASIK better than conventional treatments that use intraocular lens technology.

TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

• Most patients can return to work and start driving one day after surgery. Myths: • Laser is a hot wave of light. Laser is as cool as cool can be! • There is a smell that emanates when laser beams are focused of the eyes burning. The smell emanates from the carbon atoms from the laser beam. • Laser eye surgery changes are permanent – no. • One cannot have any type of eye treatment such as cataract surgery after refractive eye surgery. Patients can have any type of eye treatment and even a second refractive eye surgery. • Complications can cause blindness. Today, there has never been a case where a patient became blind due to a LASIK surgery. For more information on LASIK, call Sugarland Eye & Laser Center at 281-240-0478. See ad on page 5.

The TMS Serenity Center: Providing Relief for Major Depression Over 14 million individuals struggle with Major Depression, and over 19 million suffer from Anxiety Disorders. Unfortunately, less than half of these individuals benefit from treatment with traditional medications. Dr. Kimberly Cress, medical director of the TMS Serenity Center, says that it is not uncommon for her to see patients who are on one or more medications with continued depression and/or anxiety. Others are struggling due to the side effects from medications such as weight gain and sexual dysfunction. An alternative treatment is now available called TMS or Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. TMS was FDA-cleared in 2008 for the treatment of Major Depression and has been available at the TMS Serenity Center since April 2010. Over the past four years, the TMS Serenity Center has successfully treated over 130 individuals, effectively treating depression and in some cases, anxiety. In May 2013, Dr. Cress presented the Center’s findings at the American Psychiatric Association meeting with 70% of patients obtaining relief from depression and 68% obtaining relief from anxiety. TMS utilizes an MRI-strength magnet that pulses on and off over a 30 minute period of time stimulating the area of the brain that is less active due to the mood disorder. This magnetic field stimulates the nerves to release chemicals or neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. These are the same neurotransmitters that are provided artificially through antidepressant medications but without risk of side effects. Kim, daughter of a TMS patient, said, “Thank you for giving my mother her life back and for giving her back to us. We came to you with no hope, and to me, you truly performed a miracle.” Contact the TMS Serenity Center at tmsserenitycenter.com or 281240-4322.

Biscuit Baking with Easy Recipes

M

aking homemade biscuits is becoming a lost art form due, in part, to today’s busy

lifestyle. Bring back the art of biscuit making by learning, teaching and sharing with others the joy of baking these delicious delights.

Sweet Blueberry

Drop Biscuits Makes: 12 biscuits • Crisco® Original No-Stick Cooking Spray • 2 cups White Lily® Enriched Bleached Self-Rising Flour • 1/3 cup sugar • 1/4 cup Crisco All-Vegetable Shortening, chilled • 2/3 to 3/4 cups milk or buttermilk, plus additional as needed • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries If frozen, do not thaw

HEAT oven to 500°F. Spray baking sheet with no-stick cooking spray. COMBINE flour and sugar into bowl. Cut in shortening with pastry blender or 2 knives until crumbs are the size of peas. Blend in just enough milk with a fork until dough leaves sides of bowl. If needed, add more milk to form soft dough. Gently stir in blueberries. DROP dough by rounded tablespoonfuls onto prepared baking sheet 1 to 2 inches apart. Bake 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. COOL 2 minutes. Split and serve warm with butter.

“If you are an aspiring biscuit maker or just need a quicker recipe, easyto-make drop biscuits are the perfect choice,” said baking expert Linda Carman. “We are on a campaign to ‘Save the Biscuit’ and drop biscuits are the perfect recipe for new and experienced bakers alike. They save time in the kitchen without sacrificing taste.” The beauty of drop biscuits is they have a wonderfully crisp crust with a soft classic biscuit texture on the inside. They get their name because the dough is soft enough to drop from a spoon onto the baking sheet. Drop biscuits are made exactly the same way as the iconic White Lily Light and Fluffy Biscuit, except there is no kneading, rolling or cutting. Simply cut shortening into self-rising flour, add milk, drop on the pan and bake. Drop biscuits recipes are easy to modify with a couple of additions. Sweet blueberry drop biscuits combine sugar and blueberries with the White Lily classic biscuit recipe, baking up a sweet biscuit that is delightfully light in texture. Prefer savory instead? Prepare bacon cheddar drop biscuits by adding cheese and bacon to the biscuit dough. These biscuits have great flavor and the slightly crunchy texture is very satisfying. Other delicious combinations are cinnamon and sugar or blue cheese and garlic. Bake smaller versions of these biscuits to serve as appetizers at your next party or as part of an onthe-go breakfast for your family. “Above everything else, spending time in the kitchen experimenting with biscuits gives you a chance to take a break from the hustle-bustle of life,” said Carman. “Take the time to share your new recipes with other family and friends. They, too, can help ‘Save the Biscuit.’” Learn more about how you can join White Lily and help “Save the Biscuit.” Visit www.whitelily.com for more baking tips and recipes, such as bacon cheddar drop biscuits. Tips for Creating

Fabulous Floral Cupcakes for Easter et springtime blossoms bloom on your dessert plate. Cupcakes make a great and easy foundation for trying new things. With a small surface to work with, you can top your treat with one fabulous larger-scale flower or multiple smaller-scale flowers to showcase your skills, practice decorating techniques or even experiment with color and arrangement. “Spring celebrations provide a great opportunity to try a new decorating technique,” says Nancy Siler, vice president of consumer affairs at Wilton. “Decorated cupcakes and other mini treats let you experiment with multiple new ideas while having fun in the kitchen. Plus, who can resist the ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ that your beautiful floral cupcakes will certainly elicit?”

L

Try these tips from Wilton to create your own bouquet of sweet treats:

Botanical Beauties Planning a bridal shower or other special occasion? Make cupcakes that mimic the flowers used for the event or those planned for the bride’s bouquet.

Fun with Flowers Pick up fresh decorating inspiration in the new Wilton Method Course 1 – Building Buttercream Skills at your local craft store. You’ll learn the techniques and discover the tools that make it easy to create extraordinary decorating projects, including six beautiful flowers for cupcakes, sweet treats or a layered cake.

Floral Fantasy Adapt techniques to suit your floral style. Sometimes, just changing the size of the decorating tip changes the look of a flower dramatically. Experiment with tip size, color and design to create a garden full of icing flowers. After all, who says you can’t create the flowers you see in your dreams?

Bloom Where You’ re Planted Carry the floral theme from the bottom of your treats to the top. Highlight your gorgeous icing flowers by using Wilton Petal Baking Cups for your cupcakes rather than traditional baking cups. The petal-shaped top edge will beautifully accent your cupcake blooms.

Star Drop Flowers Drop flowers are a great way to make flowers quickly. The star drop flower is the easiest to make because the tip does all the work for you. Use to fill in bouquets or borders or to top individual sweet treats, like cupcakes, brownies and cookies. • Icing color • Decorating bags • Drop flower decorating tip (use tip 2D for practice) • Buttercream icing (medium consistency) 1. Fit decorating bag with drop flower decorating tip 2D and fill 1/2 full or less with medium consistency icing. 2. Hold decorating bag at 90 degree angle to treat with tip just touching surface. 3. Squeeze, letting icing build up to make flower. 4. Stop squeezing, then lift tip away. Hint: Pipe drop flowers in buttercream icing directly on cupcake. Piped dots or candy can be used for flower centers. For more spring flower ideas, baking tips, inspiration and where to take a class, visit www.wilton.com. Source: Family Features

Skillet Hashbrown Frittata For a hearty, American spin on an Italian favorite, you’ll adore the simplicity of this recipe for skillet hashbrown frittata. This golden, delicious egg dish features mouthwatering turkey sausage, melted American cheese and Hungry Jack® Original Hashbrowns. These easy-to-serve, shredded potatoes are made with 100 percent Idaho Potatoes, cook perfectly crispy every time and can be used in a number of different meals — even those beyond the brunch table. Prep Time: 10 minutes Cook Time: 20 minutes Yield: 6 to 8 servings • 1 carton (4.2 ounces) Hungry Jack® Original Hashbrown Potatoes • 4 turkey sausage patties or 6 links • 6 slices turkey bacon • 8 eggs • 1/4 cup milk • 1/2 to 1 1/2 teaspoons hot sauce, based on brand of hot sauce or to taste • Pinch ground black pepper • 2 tablespoons butter • 1/2 cup diced onion • 4 slices or 2/3 cup shredded American or cheddar cheese

Fill hashbrowns carton to fill line with hottest tap water. Let stand 12 minutes. Drain any excess water. Cook turkey sausage and bacon according to package directions. Crumble or chop. Whisk eggs, milk, hot sauce and black pepper in bowl. Melt butter in 12-inch non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until slightly softened. Spread hashbrowns evenly in pan and part-way up sides. Cook without stirring until light golden brown and crisp on one side, about 3 minutes. Sprinkle crumbled sausage and bacon over potatoes. Pour eggs evenly over and arrange cheese on top. Cover skillet and reduce heat to low; cook until eggs are set in center and cheese is melted, about 15 minutes. Serve from pan or slide onto platter, then cut into wedges.

Cheesy Potato and Apple Tarts While savory meals certainly have their place at brunch, a sweet dish is a great complement and the perfect addition for a well-rounded menu. Look for recipes that combine the elements of sweet and salty, like this dish for potato cheese and apple tarts. Fresh red delicious apples, gooey smoked gouda or jack cheese and the creamy, homemade taste of Hungry Jack® Mashed Potatoes meld together for bite after delectable bite. Prep Time: 15 minutes Cook Time: 30 minutes Yield: 12 servings (24 tarts) • 1 1/3 cups Hungry Jack® Mashed Potato Flakes • 1 1/4 cups water • 3 tablespoon butter, divided • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 2/3 cup milk • 1 cup shredded smoked gouda or jack cheese • 1 box (14 ounces) refrigerated pie crust, brought to room temperature • 1 halved, cored and thinly sliced red delicious apple • 1 teaspoon packed brown sugar • 2 teaspoons chopped chives fort bend

Preheat oven to 400°F. Heat water, 2 tablespoons of butter and salt to boiling in medium pot. Remove from heat, and stir in milk and mashed potato flakes with fork until smooth. Add shredded gouda or jack cheese and stir until melted. Cut pie crusts into 24 circles about 2 1/2 inches in diameter. Using minimuffin tin (with cups the size of 1 3/4-by-1-inch), place one pastry circle into each of 24 muffin cups, pressing slightly. Spoon about one tablespoon potato and cheese filling into each cup. Place in oven and bake until pastry edges are golden brown, about 12 to 14 minutes. In small pan, melt remaining tablespoon of butter. Add apple slices and saute until just tender, about 4 minutes. Stir in brown sugar and cook one more minute. When apple slices are cooled enough to handle, place a slice into each cup at an angle, trimming to fit if necessary. Sprinkle with chopped chives and serve. Source: Family Features

Living the Sweet Life:

By Alisa Murray www.AlisaMurray.com Nationally recognized portrait artist and awardwinning columnist.

Try Not To Succumb To

“The Midd letons” T

he Middletons are a part of your life. Do you know them? I sure hope so since they are helping you raise your children. They have infected every part of our society and have quietly snuck into our cultural norm. The ads where grown men blatantly lie and bash each other in order to win elections indirectly are teaching that bullying is an acceptable way of winning friends. Yep, those are the ones! The producers who place shows on during “family time TV” that showcase one man and umpteen women willing to kiss and sit in bathtubs in order to be the “lucky” guy or gal to be selected as a mate. This is what is being taught to our children. The absurdity of it all is quite alarming. I was jolted out of my stupor when watching television and recognized that the politicians were at it again swinging remarks that looked all too familiar to the bullying texts that we have seen drive teens to take their own lives. Remarks, lies really, to get a group of people to be one’s friends. The similarity to grade school is alarming. I am disgusted by it, and you should be as well. With all of the bad behavior and bullying rhetoric that plagues my television, I am left wondering how in the world we are supposed to parent teens and shelter children from what I call “The Middletons?” (Definition: A group of middle aged people unabashedly abandoning all moral codes and ethics to benefit their own designs while disappointing the old and tainting the young.) Their reality shows, directed and written by “The Middletons,” give all of us a daily dose of sex, lies, bullying and bad moral code. They portray all these things as glamorous when in fact, nothing could be further from it. My teen is glued to The Bachelor, and as I walk past her watching the show, I am left asking myself: What praytell is so fascinating for a bachelor to kiss multiple women as if he is some great lion planning strategies as to how to conquer the den of females just waiting to be selected? It is in poor taste, and I am frankly sick of it. My husband has observed that things are not the way they were when we were children, but he has no remedy as to how to go about fixing the situation. It is easy for us to sit and observe, difficult to actually intervene. Parenting requires it, though, and without training, the children will surely be-

come ever more destined to no longer be able to recognize what is right from what is clearly wrong. When I was young, there weren’t any reality shows, and although my generation had boys dressing like girls and girls dressing like boys, we were not as exposed to counter culture and bad morals. It was something we used to call “taboo.” That word has gone missing from our social vocabulary. There really is nothing left to say or do. What’s worse is this is our new norm.

Nana and Alisa.

Desperate times calls for desperate measures. We now must defer to my Nana to whom all decisions concerning morals and ethics are filtered and from which everything should and does pass. She has been dead now for 10 years, but she is an ever present go to in my mind if nowhere else. If asked about the bullying politicians, she would surely have already taken sides with her favorite candidate. She would say the other teammate “deserved what was coming to him.” On the shows like The Bachelor and The Kardashians, she would be sitting glued like her great granddaughter to whatever was happening next. “That’s just TV,” she would say. “It’s not real.” And, I suspect after realizing that TV now reflects and is the real deal, she might be sitting and rocking in her chair about now with lips pressed together in displeasure, hands clasped and writhing, and saying, “To heck in a hand-basket. Yes, that is what this world is coming to!” Take Care of YOU!
