READER FEEDBACK Dear Lisa, Each year I look forward to the October Focus issue. This year was no exception. I wonder if the women in our community fully recognize how very fortunate we are to have journalistic leadership that really cares about our issues. You always go one step beyond, and I so appreciate that. You listen and respond. I once mentioned that women I knew who had metastatic disease or were facing breast cancer a second time often felt left out in the Pink Frenzy of October. You heard and responded last year with inspirational stories of women courageously doing just that. Little did I know that the very next month I would be joining those ladies in the fight for a second time. That issue had such a profound effect on me and showed me that I could do it again – and I did! Thank you so very much for caring. I know this has been a difficult year for your family, and that makes this issue all that more poignant. Blessings, Rosemary Herron TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

Texas Direct Auto Proudly Supports Women In Need

n their ongoing commitment to community support, Texas Direct Auto is a proud sponsor of the 9th annual Girlfriends Giggle, benefitting the Fort Bend County Women’s Center. This year’s event, described by past party-goers as the ultimate “Girl’s Night Out,” will be held on Thursday, February 6th from 6:30 to 11:00 p.m. in the Diva Den at Fluor Corporation in Sugar Land, Texas. Girlfriends Giggle is a celebration of female friendship in support of local women in need. Billed as a “grownup girl pajama party,” attendees can enjoy top local restaurant fare and a martini bar, participate in live and silent auctions, boutique shopping and dance lessons, compete in a pajama contest and indulge in spa luxuries like manicures, massages and hair styling – all in the name of helping survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault achieve safety and self-sufficiency. On Texas Direct Auto’s decision to sponsor the event for a second consecutive year, Jessica DeMarr, Director of Business Development, says, “The Fort Bend County Women’s Center provides such a vital and important service to our community. Assisting survivors of domestic violence and providing them with the resources to start a new life is a mission we are proud to support.”
Tickets for Girlfriends Giggle are only $67 – the same amount it costs to shelter a survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault for a day at the Fort Bend County Women’s Center’s 65bed emergency center. Over the past 30 years, the non-profit agency has helped more than 35,000 local women and children achieve violencefree lifestyles, but they could never have done it without the generous contributions and support from the local Fort Bend community – caring people just like you! Last year’s event sold out with 1,000 “gigglers” in attendance and raised a record-breaking $127,650 for the Fort Bend County Women’s Center. This year the goals are even higher, so Texas Direct Auto urges all the lovely ladies of Fort Bend to grab your girlfriends and head out to One Fluor Daniel Drive on February 6th for a fabulous evening of female fun in support of a very worthy cause. Tickets to Girlfriends Giggle can be purchased online at fortbendwomenscenter.org or in person at Texas American Title, The Design Source or J. Loggins Jewelers. For information on becoming a sponsor at the event, contact Leah Crawford at (281) 935-8072 or Melissa Evans at (281) 221-3117.

woman today, and the hectic schedules of today’s modern woman does not always allow time for them to properly care for themselves. That’s where Dr. Shelena Lalji comes in. Focused on the overall health and well-being of women’s body, mind and spirit, Dr. Shel, as her patients and colleagues call her, is a modern woman caring for today’s modern women. With over twenty years of experience as a physician, well-known author, national speaker and educator, Dr. Shel is a passionate advocate for women’s health. “Women need to take their health into their own hands, and find a physician who is a woman’s advocate, one who gets to know the patient as a person and not just a number,” said Dr. Shel. “Our mission is to provide the most innovative integrative medical treatments and the latest in aesthetic technology to attain inner and outer well-being.”

Customized Care
Dr. Shel believes in providing customized, individualized care. “Understanding our patients, their symptoms, their inner and outer wellness goals, and helping them achieve those goals is always our main priority.”
Providing customized care to patients like Carole Brown is paramount to Dr. Shel.
This customized care is unique – and extensive – as are the services, treatments, products and experience offered by Dr. Shel and her staff at The Dr. Shel Wellness & Medical Spa. From bio-identical hormones to nutritional health to gluten sensitivity and food allergies to weight loss, Dr. Shel not only offers wellness services but an extensive menu of aesthetic services in her mission of treating patients as a complete person ... inside and out. “Looking and feeling your absolute best is an integral part of our philosophy of care,” said Dr. Shel. “I strongly believe in the art of beauty and the science of wellness as key ingredients for a balanced and vital life.” Dr. Shel Wellness & Medical Spa is not a traditional spa; it is a comprehensive, state-of-the-art foundation for education. Their goal is not only to empower patients but to educate, inspire and plant seeds of knowledge into every person who partakes in the journey to vitality.
Be Your Best with Dr. Shel’s Formulated Supplements Dr. Shel has paired her extensive knowledge with her insight into patients’ needs to create her own line of formulated products. Each product is made using the highest quality ingredients. They have been extensively researched and tested to be effective for mood swings, low libido, PMS, hair loss and low energy to name a few. All of Dr. Shel’s products are available both in the office and online at www.drshel.com.
Leading the Wellness Revolution As part of her commitment to changing lives and getting patients the care they deserve, Dr. Shel regularly speaks and trains at national and international medical and aesthetic conferences. She has been featured for her expertise on many television shows including the NBC Morning News, Latina Voices and numerous times on KHOU’s Great Day Houston as an expert in her field. As part of her Institute for Wellness and Aesthetics, Dr. Shel continues to educate other physicians worldwide and shares her passion for preventive care, treating causes not conditions, overall health and balance.
Bio-Identical Hormones Get Your Life Back! Inner wellness is a key component to patients feeling their best, and bio-identical hormones can have a life-changing impact on both men and women and their quality of life. Hormonal imbalance remains one of the most common issues affecting both men and women’s health, and symptoms can include depression, weight gain, hair loss, insomnia, anxiety, low libido and fatigue, to name a few. “Hormone and thyroid deficiencies are extremely under diagnosed. Unfortunately, instead of correcting these imbalances, patients are often prescribed anti-depressants and the patients’ conditions often worsen,” said Dr. Shel. Dr. Shel strongly believes in using natural, bio-identical hormones rather than synthetic hormones. Bio-identical hormones are biologically identical to what the body produces and are recognized by our body’s receptors. Hormone imbalances often occur in women in their 30s and beyond when their Progesterone levels decline rapidly leading to mood swings, depression, fatigue, weight gain and low libido. It may continue to worsen into their 40s and then, of course, during menopause. “Women need to be validated and not made to feel that it is all in their head. Once we diagnose and correct the imbalances, women once again feel vibrant, energized, sexy and full of life.”
fort bend
Men’s Health Though women’s health is what Dr. Shel is best known for, her wellness center also treats men in the same philosophy of overall well-being, with one of the most common issues being Low Testosterone. According to Dr. Shel, there is an actual time period in a man’s life where testosterone declines, called andropause, or male menopause. Most men suffer from loss of muscle mass, irritability, low energy, weight gain, insomnia, lack of drive and low sex drive. “Most men are not certain what to do about these symptoms, so we work with them to replace testosterone and nutrients in a cautious way with the appropriate protocols to help them feel youthful and energized.”
Dr. Shel has authored and published her first book, I Am Woman: Our Journeys to Health, Happiness and Harmony. Her insightful book guides readers through a journey of self-discovery and awareness of womens’ health issues by focusing on preventive and integrative aspects of medicine. Through patient’s personal stories about how Dr. Shel and integrative medicine has changed their lives, she focuses on how to live better physically, emotionally and spiritually to truly feel balanced and vital. She is currently completing her second book focusing on her steps for youth and vitality. To order I Am Woman, visit www.drshel.com or www.Amazon.com.

Wife, Mother, Physician Dr. Shel has many roles – author, national trainer, speaker, physician and medical director of Dr. Shel Medical & Wellness Spa, but like many women today, she is also a wife, mother, philanthropist and community volunteer. She is a devoted wife to Dr. Ayeez Lalji, who is a successful dentist and entrepreneur – owner of eight locations of Royal Dental and Lakepointe Dental – but yet finds time to be an incredibly supportive husband. She is also mother to Zoe (13) and Zade (10), her heart and soul. She is a dedicated member of many organizations including Child Advocates, Fort Bend Women’s Center, the American Cancer Society and many others, and she and her husband started the Lalji Foundation through which they contribute to many worthwhile community organizations. While family is most important to Dr. Shel, her patients are also categorized as family. “I feel so blessed to have had a positive impact on the lives of my patients as they have had on mine. Major Investment Themes Evolving for this Decade
O
ver 37 years of investing, I’ve that observed major gains are made by identifying trends that will last five to ten years. We did this with energy in the 1970s, hospitals and nursing in the 1980s, drugs and healthcare in the 1990s and Master Limited Partnerships for the past decade. Below, we present evolving themes for this decade.
1
Last decade was the decade of commodity producers. This decade belongs to commodity users driven by plentiful low natural gas prices.
2 3 4
Resurgence of U.S. Manufacturing – The “Rust Belt” is reborn on the back of low and plentiful energy. Growth investing re-emerges as the principle theme over value investing.
Over the next few months, we will discuss each of these themes and discuss how to position our portfolios to take advantage of it. Stay tuned. Log on to www.HardeeInvestmentGroup.com to learn more about the team, the decade themes and how we’d like to help you take advantage of these themes we’ve identified. Want to talk to a real person? Well, we want to talk to you too. Give us a call at 713-853-0879. Let’s see where this New Year takes us! The views presented herein are solely those of H.H. “Will” Hardee, AWM, and do not necessarily represent the views of RBC Wealth Management. Current status of issues discussed in this letter is subject to change based upon market conditions and industry fundamentals. Clients should work with their Financial Advisor to develop investment strategies tailored to their own financial circumstances. Past performance is no guarantee of future results. Did You Know? We think this decade will be the decade of the commodity USER, not PRODUCER.
De-conglomeration of Corporate America – Companies will break up or spin-off subsidiaries to become more efficient.
Peace of Mind
Are you experiencing mental numbness regarding your finances during these challenging times? We can help implement financial strategies for managing and building long-lasting wealth. FOCUS ON HEALTH By Dr. Peter Osborne
A
wonderful thing happens in January every year. People commit to new fitness and weight loss programs as part of their New Year’s resolution. Why is this so wonderful? It increases awareness about the importance of diet and exercise and improves the health of those involved. Unfortunately, most people fall off of the proverbial wagon after the first month or two. The Problem with Traditional Weight Loss Programs The problem with many weight loss systems is that they cater to the masses without considering individual need. They use a “one size fits all” approach. This approach works for some but leaves many to ponder why the weight will not come off the way it used to. Most diet plans are based on calorie consumption. Not enough thought is given to the quality of the calories being consumed. For example, there are a number of companies that provide calorie controlled meals. This concept works well for portion control; however, the quality of the food being used is poor and as the age old adage goes – “You are what you eat.” Chemicals, radiated foods, ultra pasteurization, processing, lack of nutrient density, genetically modified foods, cloned meats, unidentified food intolerances, etc. all taint many of these so called “healthy foods.” Many of these factors can cause internal inflammation when ingested, leading to an increased risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and more. As if that were not bad enough, weight
Weight Loss Resolutions loss is not just about calories. The concept of the calorie is based on the amount of heat a food generates when it is burned in a sealed chamber. Although calorie estimation can be useful, it does not take into consideration the affect that food can have on hormone levels. To make things even more confusing, different foods can affect people’s hormones differently. For example, some people do not tolerate carbohydrates very well. For these individuals, carbs cause excessive insulin production, which in turn, tells the body to store fat. This can happen even if the individual is not “over eating” on calories. Exercise Programs Exercise is also a critical and key component for successful weight loss. The common perception is that performing cardiovascular exercise is enough to help a person with weight loss. This concept is not entirely true. Cardio is over-rated as a form of exercise. Although it helps tone blood vessels, it does very little for muscle tone. The key to weight loss with exercise programs is achieving adequate lean muscle mass. I am not talking about working out with weights to become Herculean. Many fear that this will happen, but it is just not true. The fact of the matter is that muscle utilizes energy. The more tone your muscles, the more energy your body expends while at rest. Additionally, maintaining solid muscle tone as we age has been shown to increase the life span. A common problem with exercise is time. People typically do not want to take
an hour or more daily to go to a gym and exercise. I recommend the 10 minute rule. Everyone has at least 10 minutes to give to exercise. The key to this rule is that the exercise must be intense. Try the following exercises: push-ups, pull ups, lunges and squats. Perform two sets of each exercise within a 10 minute time frame. Don’t worry if you can’t perform a lot of repetitions of these exercises when you first get started. The key will be consistency over time. If you do it daily, your body will get stronger and build lean muscle mass. As this happens, you will notice your clothes fitting better, your energy increasing and your sleep improving. Do not weigh yourself on a scale. As you lose fat, you will gain muscle. Therefore, your weight may not fluctuate as much as you want it to. Weight is not as important as body composition. Once Again, Common Sense Applies People are different and unique. No one diet is right for everyone. The same can be said for exercise. No one program is right for everyone. If you are having problems with weight loss, know what your options are. You might not be responding for a number of different reasons. Specialized genetic and laboratory testing can help you identify what type of diet and exercise program will work better for you. Put the odds in your favor before you get frustrated with a lack of progress. Visit www.TownCenterWellness.com to learn more, and sign up for a free health newsletter.

The Stafford PennyWise Resale Center – Coming Soon To A New Location Near You
The Fort Bend County Women’s Center is excited to announce the moving of the Stafford PennyWise Resale Center currently at 13945 Murphy Rd in Stafford. The new location will open in January and is next to Wendy’s at 13645 Murphy Rd, Ste. 107 in Stafford – only three blocks away! The new location will have a brighter shopping atmosphere with the same great thrift store items. Easier access from Murphy Road for donors as well as customers will be available. The Fort Bend community hosted many donation drives in October and No-
vember 2013 to help stock the shelves with great new items. The Women’s Center thanks all of the organizations who joined in their donation drive endeavor. Participating organizations included the Stafford Police Department, Stafford Fire Station Number 1, Stafford Fire Station Number 2, Missouri City Hall, Missouri City Public Safety Headquarters, Missouri City Tennis and Recreation Center and the Missouri City Municipal Court Offices. Net proceeds from the sale of items at PennyWise Resale Centers are used to fund the operation of the Women’s Cen-
ter and its essential, life-saving programs. Additionally, many donated items are given directly to the women and children served by the Women’s Center. Approximately $85,000 worth of items is given directly to clients each year. Donors can call 281-344-5770 to schedule large items for pick-up, and they can also drop off donations at any of the PennyWise locations. New Year, New Rules Here are a few of my picks for 2014:
By Jennifer Elliott
• I will not cook spaghetti while wearing a white shirt. • I will accept that my children are growing up, and I can no longer put them to bed at 8 pm. Ugh! • I refuse to eat lunch or dinner at McDonalds; however, the Egg White Delight McMuffin with a large Diet Coke remains the breakfast of champions.
• I will always have avocados on hand because they make everything delicious. They have the good fat, right? • I will get my oil changed before the warning light comes on. Then, I will use the car wash coupon before it expires. • I will maintain my collection of “skinny” jeans in three different sizes, so that I can be “skinny” on any given day. • I will continue to challenge my children to walk our dog, even though every time they return, they tell me she “ate poop.” • I will not have my teenage daughter’s sports bra monogrammed. Those three little letters say “notice my chest.” I must be old because I still believe a person should wear a shirt over the sports bra. • I will not expect things I order online to actually fit.
Gorgeous Hill Country Home Site Waterfront Lot in Comal County
• I will assume that anything made with kale tastes bitter. Then, I can be pleasantly surprised if it does not. • I will not resolve to work out more. I will continue to plan to work out several days a week and accept that life gets in the way about half the time. • As possibly the last person on the planet to spell out “tomorrow” on a text, I will visit netlingo.com and try to stay up to date with the latest acronyms. Did you know that LOL can mean “living on Lipitor” and BTW can mean “bring the wheelchair?” OMG! How often can that come up? • Before accepting any new volunteer commitments, I will look at my calendar, and then, go look at all of the laundry piled up in our hampers. • I will have more patience. Could someone help me with that one, right now!
We are changing the cultural landscape.

absolutely! HEALTHY LIVING
An Easy Way to Add Years to Your Life Whether your doctor has recommended that you increase your physical activity, or you just want to keep up with your children, walking is one of the easiest ways to improve your overall fitness. It also can add years to your life! For every hour of walking, life expectancy may increase by two hours, even if you start exercising in middle age. “Walking is a great way to boost your heart health,” said Majid Basit, M.D., a cardiovascular disease specialist affiliated with Memorial Hermann and the South Texas Medical Clinics. “It creates new blood vessels in the heart and makes the heart a more efficient pump. I recommend walking 20 to 30 minutes at least three times a week.” Schedule your walk on your calendar and treat it like any other important appointment. Involve an accountability partner. Take the stairs and park farther away from your destination. Download an app to monitor your progress. There are countless ways to be successful, so just get started. Walking helps reduce the risk of heart disease by as much as 30 to 40 percent in women. It also improves cholesterol levels and can help lower blood pressure. Physical activity like walking can reduce the risk of stroke by 20 to 27 percent in active individuals, depending on whether they are moderately or highly active. For more keys to a healthy heart, join Dr. Basit at The Original Girls’ Night Out at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital on Thursday, February 27th from 6 to 8 pm. The event is free, but registration is required. Call 713-222-CARE to reserve your place.
BREAKING NEW GROUND. IN HEALTH CARE. AND IN SUGAR LAND. Announcing our latest commitment to innovation and to the community: a $93 million expansion of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. Cutting-edge technology, extended sports medicine services and over 160 new staff members are just a few of the many improvements you can expect. The Nine Day Celebration of Navratri By Zeenat Kassam Mitha
T
here were thousands of people throughout Fort Bend County celebrating the nine auspicious days of Navratri. From festivities at Baps Shri Swaminarayan Mandir to Stafford Community Center and many Fort Bend homes, these merriments included dance, plays, food and rejoicing.
A
round September or October, Navratri starts around the beginning of the new moon. The Hindu community dedicates nine days to the Goddess Shakti and spends time to seek blessings and commune with their divinity. “Women in the community find Navratri a time in which they deeply connect,” said Asha Dhume. “In some communities, women beautify a vessel, which represents the fertile womb and signifies the goddess Shakti.” It is a time-honored tradition to plant seeds in the vessel, the first day, which will flourish in the next nine days. During this time, women also take special measures to look their best and visit other female relatives and friends. They put together a tray of of-
ferings and add the betel leaf and nut, as that symbolizes friendship and loyalty, along with fresh turmeric root and coconut, since that embodies goodwill and fertility. Pujas, which are offerings to a God or Goddess, Spirit or Divine, are done throughout the nine days. Each night, food offerings are presented along with special prayers. Guests share their talents and artistic skills through food, dance or other means, and all enjoy sweets and other treats. In the evening, devotees and friends meet to dance, usually in the form of Garba or Dandiya-Ras. The Garba, a popular folk dance of Gujarat, is an energetic dance performed in circles while twirling and using the arms and hands to clap rhythmically and stepping in harmony. With the Dan-

diya-Ras, dance sticks are part of the routine. Like most places in the world, dancing is an expression of joy and togetherness. The ninth day, Maha Navami, is about seeking the Goddess’ gifts of talent, inspiration and ability. Musical instruments, books, tools and equipment are placed before Goddess Saraswati for blessings. This ritual, called Ayudha (tool/weapon) Puja, began when weapons were blessed for the kings of ancient India. In this day and age, blessings are offered to tools of one’s trade; anything from books, computers, offices, vehicles, craftsmen’s tools, including iphones are part of receiving the blessings. Devotees are said to reflect on their strengths, goals, skills and needs. The historical traditions in India, particularly in the South, are as follows: the initial three days are committed to the Goddess Durga, the stern Mother who gets rid of negative forces. The next three days that follow, the Goddess of prosperity, Lakshmi, is honored. The final three days are devoted to the Goddess of learning and wisdom, Saraswati. These nine days are a tribute to women. Women are recognized as the protectors of the family, commended as the source of good fortune, praised for their abilities of fertility and endurance and admired as sources of culture and learning. Traditionally, families also create elaborate handmade clay dolls for display, called kolu. “Adding new dolls each year and handing the collection down to the next generation is a long-standing tradition in our family,” said Luckmi Pawa. Being a third generation Indian, I have learned throughout my western upbringing that similar to Indian weddings, the cultural celebrations are endless and have heartfelt meaning. There is a victorious tenth day. Surprise! That day celebrates the Goddess Durga’s legendary victory over Mahishasura, a commanding being known for selfishness and ignorance. On the same day, many celebrate the Hindu Lord Rama’s victory over the evil Ravana. This celebration is a reminder to persevere in life’s challenges. Good versus evil is part of every good plot and every joyous celebration!

Center for Craniofacial and Dental Sleep Medicine Provides New Cutting Edge Technology for Obstructive Sleep Apnea
D
r. Samuel E. Cress, D.D.S., Director of Sugar Land’s Center for Craniofacial and Dental Sleep Medicine, offers new DNA therapy to aid patients suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA is present in approximately one in every 15 Americans. More astonishing, over five percent of all Americans have undiagnosed cases of sleep apnea. The Daytime Nighttime Appliance (DNA) addresses the root cause of OSA by non-surgically remodeling the upper airway. The DNA system widens the upper and lower dental arch while at the same time trains the tongue to stay in a forward position. Training the tongue to stay in a forward position opens the upper airway and decreases snoring, the number one sign of patients suffering from OSA. In addition to improving the upper airway through an increase in facial volume, patients achieve straighter teeth, as well as cosmetic benefit of balance in their facial features. Increasing upper mid-facial volume for better airway exchange leads to a noninvasive facial cosmetic correction. Results have been present in as little as 90 days. “I personally have been using the DNA sleep apnea appliance in my practice for more than four years and have over 350 appliances in place. The astonishing results have not only improved the patient’s airways and straightened their teeth but have also improved their facial features,” Dr. Cress reported. “We are seeing broader smiles, fuller lips, better and straighter noses – leading to happier, healthier patients with better nighttime breathing.” For complimentary consultation, visit www.cfdsm.com or call 281-565-4100. Experience Aveda at Salon Eben Day Spa
I
n a time when society places a high value on appearance, coloring hair has become a commonplace experience. When getting your hair colored, using healthy products is just as important as choosing a fitting color. Chemicals in most hair dyes sometimes can be damaging and leave your hair malnourished. Strong chemicals mixed with unnatural ingredients sometimes cause your hair to become brittle, greasy and full of hapless split ends. This is why when choosing a brand of hair dye, it is imperative to choose products composed with natural ingredients such as Aveda. Aveda products come from a long line of all-natural, plant-based ingredients, which are known to be high-quality, eco-friendly and significantly healthier for your hair. While Aveda products are sold at most high-end salon and retail stores, having a professional stylist color your hair can significantly increase the quality and prevent unnecessary damage from misuse of products. Salon Eben and Day Spa is a family-owned, professional salon that has been using Aveda products for over 24 years. With their experienced staff, relaxing atmosphere and use of all-natural Aveda products, your hair will be left healthier, happier and with the least possible adversities from hair coloring. T Physicians Women’s Center in Sugar Land welcomes its newest provider, Dr. Brian R. Heaps, a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Defined by his dedication to his patients and the delivery of the highest quality care, Dr. Heaps is pleased to be working in the Fort Bend community. Dr. Heaps is motivated by the great trust that his patients have in him to take care of them during the most important phases of their lives. In fact, one of his greatest honors is being involved in the delivery of a couple’s child. As a Board Certified Ob/Gyn, Dr. Heaps understands that the delivery of a baby, however, is often only one aspect of what matters most in women’s care. Knowing this, Dr. Heaps has worked to become proficient in the evaluation of common issues and has worked to become skilled in their medical and surgical treatments. He has been trained and is committed to minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic and robotic assisted surgery. Through his work as the Director of Medical Informatics and Chair of Ob/Gyn and Pediatrics at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, Dr. Heaps has led the way in teaching fellow physicians and caregivers. His care for patients and his dedication to medicine has served as a foundational motivation to succeed. Above all, Dr. Heaps is honored to serve those with whom he comes in contact. ll women want to exude confidence by feeling and looking their absolute best. Every woman has had that daunting moment in the dressing room when she realizes she has gone up in her clothing size – it happens! Most women are still trying to fit into those clothes that are a bit too tight. Why not do something for yourself and transform your body with a tummy tuck? Sugar Land Plastic Surgery’s goal is to help women regain their confidence and become enthusiastic about taking care of themselves. Dr. John T. Nguyen helps bring back the reality of looking and feeling beautiful again with the tummy tuck. The tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, corrects diastasis recti by tightening the abdominal wall and removing excess skin and stretch marks; liposuction of the abdomen and flanks recreate a natural looking belly button. Parenthood is one of the most fulfilling moments in any woman’s life, but the changes the body goes through can leave a woman feeling less than beautiful. The way the curves of a woman’s body are morphed during and after pregnancy sometimes cannot be corrected by the average diet and exercise. The tummy tuck is a life-altering procedure meant for women of all ages who are looking for a positive transformation. Dr. Nguyen and his staff strive for exceptional patient relationships and care. Visit Sugar Land Plastic Surgery for a complimentary consultation with Dr. Nguyen and his team, and discover a new and improved you! T
he Fort Bend and Sugar Land area is abundant with physicians who perform cosmetic procedures such as botox and fillers, as well as surgical procedures like breast augmentation and liposuction. However, many of these physicians are not plastic surgeons, and some of the ones who are plastic surgeons are not board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Ravi Somayazula is a board certified plastic surgeon in the Sugar Land area. Among other characteristics of a plastic surgeon, board certification in plastic surgery calls into question a plastic surgeon’s safety, ethics and training. Therefore, Dr. Somayazula urges his patients to ask if their plastic surgeon is board certified specifically by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. Choosing a plastic surgeon in Fort Bend who can be trusted can be a very difficult task. The media is filled with all sorts of information, much of which can be incorrect or even unsafe. He knows for a fact that a wellinformed patient who feels comfortable with their plastic surgeon after having an educational initial consultation translates into a happy patient. It is the extra time spent with a knowledgeable and caring staff that makes a world of difference in cosmetic surgery. If you have ever contemplated having a cosmetic procedure, you will find out immediately why the warm, friendly staff at Body by Ravi is the right choice for all your cosmetic needs. Call 281-242-1061 for a free consultation.

Rejuvenation and Wellness Considerations for Patients Who May Benefit from a Hysterectomy
T
he leading indication for hysterectomy in America is bleeding abnormalities most often caused by uterine fibroids. However, other problems can also require hysterectomy, including uterine prolapse, malignancy, pelvic inflammatory disease and pelvic pain. Methods of hysterectomy, which means to remove the uterus, plus or minus the cervix, range from abdominal, laparoscopic or vaginal to da Vinci robotics. Often times, recovery from the minimally invasive techniques involves small incisions and only an overnight hospitalization. Whether or not the ovaries and tubes need to be removed at the same time depends on the woman’s age, personal/familial risks of cancer, indication for hysterectomy and personal preferences. The decision to remove the ovaries should involve a detailed consultation with the gynecologist to explain the risks and benefits to the procedure. Discussion should include symptoms of menopause that may result from having the ovaries removed in addition to options of natural lifestyle behavior, bio identical or prescription estrogen replacement therapy. Before committing to the important decision of a hysterectomy, women should thoroughly understand the procedure, course of recovery and what benefits should result from it. Sometimes there can be alternative options to a hysterectomy, so explore this with the doctor. If hysterectomy is the ultimate recommendation, women should be proactive with their questions and concerns. Studies show that a substantial number of women who have hysterectomies report marked improvement of their presenting symptoms in addition to their overall physical and mental health. For more information and to schedule an appointment, contact Dr. NguyenTran at 713-578-3823.

Santrol Renews Partnership with Fort Bend Cares Santrol, a Fairmount Minerals company, recently announced a renewed commitment to Fort Bend Cares with a $15,000 donation. This is the second consecutive year Santrol has partnered with the charitable foundation that has been working since 2004 to improve the lives of the county’s at-risk and disadvantaged youth. “We’re grateful to Santrol and the Fairmount Minerals Foundation for this generous gift,” said Walt White, Chair of the Fort Bend Cares Board of Trustees. “This gift will allow us to continue our work for the county’s children and teenagers who depend on the charitable organizations that offer the vital services they require.” With this donation, Santrol is reinforcing its commitment to nourish a stronger, more prosperous future for the communities and families where its offices are located. From supporting social service programs, improving the environment, and advocating health and wellness goals, Santrol and Fairmount Minerals combine outstanding business operations with exceptional sustainability performance. “We’re pleased we can make a difference in Fort Bend County by giving back to the area’s youth who are in need of social services,” said Vinay Mehta, Vice President of Technical Excellence and Innovation for Fairmount Minerals. “Good corporate citizenship is integral to our business values.” Organized nearly 10 years ago by Dr. Robert McClendon and Jim Rice, Fort Bend Cares has awarded nearly $1 million to county-based organizations that offer educational services, health care and social services to youth in need of support. “The organization’s financial assistance has allowed us to send youth on field trips, enroll in camps and receive direction that allowed them to excel and see firsthand how learning positively affects their future,” said James Allen, Director of the Knowledge-First Empowerment Center. Fort Bend Cares accepts grant applications annually. Applications will be accepted through February 28th, reviewed in March and April and awarded in June. The organization’s annual fundraiser will be February 1st at Fluor Daniel. For more information about event sponsorships, please call 281-433-3363 or visit fortbendcares.org.

Mariners have manners because saying “please” and “thank you” matter. “A man’s manners are a mirror in which he shows his portrait.” – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Mariners are accountable for their thoughts, words and actions. “Your beliefs become your thoughts, your thoughts become your words, your words become your actions, your actions become your habits, your habits become your values, your values become your destiny.” – Mahatma Gandhi Mariners have respect for the Lord, their school, friends, teachers, and themselves. “Tolerance implies a respect for another person, not because he is wrong or even because he is right, but because he is human.” – John Cogley Commonweal Mariners aren’t afraid to use their imaginations and think “outside the box.” “The man who has no imagination has no wings.” – Muhammad Ali Mariners are noble, socially aware, and committed to serving others. “In the end you should always do the right thing even if it’s hard.” – Nicholas Sparks Mariners are enthusiastic. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. “It’s faith in something and enthusiasm in something that makes life worth living.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. Mariners have a responsibility to do their best, live their best and be their best. “The price of greatness is responsibility.” – Winston Churchill Together, we work together to serve the Lord and adhere to the code listed above to make Southminster School a home to all people. absolutely! AUTO REVIEW By Steve Kursar
2014 FORD C-MAX T
he 2014 Ford C-Max is a new alternative to the compact crossover that’s popular with small families looking for an economical way to haul everyone around town. Smaller than typical minivan, the CMax is available in either a hybrid configuration or as a plug-in electric model. Either way, this mini-minivan will save you time and money at the gas pump. Ford stopped selling minivans here about ten years ago when they abandoned the Windstar nameplate. But around the same time that Ford was saying goodbye to the minivan in the U.S., they were introducing a smaller
version in Europe that they called the C-MAX. Known as “people movers” in Europe, these vehicles are smaller but more fuel-efficient than their larger American counterparts. And as gas prices continue to rise, American consumers look for ways to bus around the kids and the dog without burning a hole in the family gas budget. Maybe the C-Max is the answer. At a glance, the Ford C-Max looks pretty similar in shape to your runof-the-mill minivan. But park it next to a new Toyota Sienna or a Honda Odyssey, and you immediately see the difference. The C-Max looks like a kid’s size version of Mom’s car. But you’ll be surprised just how roomy and comfortable the C-Max can be. It doesn’t have a third row, but the second row is spacious and it folds flat when you need the space. The instrument panel has something Ford calls SmartGauge with EcoGuide, which can actually teach the driver how to maximize fuel economy on every trip. The C-Max comes in two models, both using battery power as a way to enhance fuel economy. The C-Max Hybrid, with a base MSRP of $28,485,

is powered by a gas-fueled 141 hp, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that combined with both an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack delivers almost 190 horsepower. Fuel economy is expected to top 45 mpg in both city and highway when the new EPA estimates are released shortly. For about $4,500 more, you can step up to the C-Max Energi, which has a larger battery pack plus a plugin feature that allows you to recharge the car’s batteries either at home or at an increasingly larger number of electric car charging stations scattered throughout metro Houston and beyond. Depending on your daily commute, you could drive using little or no gas. It might just be the way we all drive in the future.

Tobacco Targets Kids: Cigars, E-Cigarettes and Hookahs Just one cigarette puff can become a lasting problem for teens. More than 80 percent of daily adult smokers begin smoking before age 18, and today, nearly one in four high school seniors smoke some form of tobacco. The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars advertising products like ecigarettes, flavored cigars and hookahs. They’re touting these products as “safe” and capturing the attention of teenagers across the nation. Of course, tobacco use is preventable. The best defense is to educate children about the risks at a young age. Use the guide below to learn what alternative tobacco products are currently on the market. Flavored Cigars Convenience stores and gas stations are the biggest sellers of flavored cigars, which can be found next to the candy aisle. Flavored cigars come in cherry, vanilla, strawberry, chocolate, Da Bomb Blueberry and more. Plus, they’re cheaper than a pack of gum. A typical pack of 20 costs about $2. “The amount of nicotine in an average cigar is nearly 20 times that of a conventional cigarette,” said Alexander Prokhorov, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Tobacco Outreach Education Program at MD Anderson. And teens aren’t just puffing on cigars; they’re inhaling. Smoking fla-
vored cigars causes cancers of the oral cavity, larynx, esophagus and lung. Cigarillos Cigarillos, or little cigars, are a cousin to the flavored cigar. They’re sweet, cheap, and come in colorful packages and a variety of flavors like chocolate, strawberry, peach, grape, sour apple, watermelon and more. Such sweet flavors mask the harsh flavor of tobacco. They sell in packs of 20 or individually for less than 70 cents. Cigarillos may seem fun to kids, but they contain the same dangerous chemicals as regular cigarettes and cigars. Smoking them can cause heart disease, lung cancer and lung disease. Hookahs Hookahs are water pipes that create flavored tobacco vapor. Most people use hookahs at bars and cafes to socialize, but companies also sell hookahs for personal use. An average hookah session lasts about 40 minutes. Users can inhale about 100 times the amount of smoke that’s in a cigarette. Hookahs may appear to be fancy and trendy, but they’re not safe alternatives to cigarettes. They still contain nicotine’s cancer-causing chemicals. E-Cigarettes Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, are smokeless electronic devices that

look like cigarettes. E-cigarette users inhale a vapor of liquid nicotine similar to the way a smoker puffs on a cigarette. The liquid nicotine inside e-cigarettes comes in hundreds of different flavors. The only deterrent for kids may be the cost. It’s $10 for one and up to $100 for a kit. The bottom line: even though they don’t use tobacco, e-cigarettes contain nicotine, which is addictive. So, they can easily become a gateway for experimenting teens to try other tobacco products. E-cigarettes also can put kids at risk for lung cancer and heart disease. SNUS SNUS is a smokeless tobacco developed in Sweden. It’s similar to dip or chew. Users place it under their lip, but it doesn’t require spitting. A can of smokeless tobacco typically costs $3 to $5. The number of white high school males who use SNUS is on the rise – one in five uses smokeless tobacco. It’s as dangerous as cigarette smoking. Users absorb the nicotine in smokeless tobacco through the lining of their mouth. It causes oral, esophageal and pancreatic cancers. It may also cause heart disease, gum disease and oral lesions. Visit www.mdanderson.org/focused for additional tips on health and exercise.

New Year’s Wine Resolutions Drink More – and Better - Wine
I
n my experience as the Vine Sleuth, I have learned a few things about enjoying and exploring wines. And, since January is so often about resolutions, I would like to encourage you to adopt these as your New Year's Wine Resolutions. They are much more fun than your typical New Year's resolutions and will serve you well through the new year.
Resolution Number One: Don't drink wine you don't like. If you don't like a wine, dump it out or send it back, even if it's an award-winning, 100-point wine that everyone else says is amazing. It might be amazing to someone else, but it has to be good to you for you to like it. And, there are too many fantastic options that will suit you well to settle for something you don't like. You just might need help finding them.
Resolution Number Two: Don't be shy about asking for a taste. If you don't know what to order, ask for a taste of your top two choices to help you decide. Many restaurants and bars will be happy to let you try a wine or two, provided you have every intention of purchasing a glass or bottle. By tasting, you are sure to end up with a wine you'll enjoy rather than just guessing, and getting it wrong.
Resolution Number Three: Remember grape types or blends you like, together with the areas where the wines are from, to help find more similar wines you might like. Wines should be an expression of the area where the grapes are grown. Different areas impart different flavors on the grapes. If you can remember, for example, that you like Pinot Noir (that's the grape type) from Oregon or Sauvignon Blanc (another grape type) from New Zealand, that's a huge help in guiding you to other wines you might enjoy with similar characteristics. Start by trying other brands of wine from that same area using the same grapes. What do you think about these resolutions for the coming year? Do you drink wine you don't like? Are you nervous about asking for a taste? Do you have any wine rules that I've left out that have helped you explore and enjoy wine? Click over to my blog, VineSleuthUncorked.com, and tell me what you think. Cheers to a new year of drinking better wine! TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

High School HOT SHOT
By Lauren Dante Benoit
Poria Dorali: A Way With Words
A
senior at Travis High School, Poria Dorali has a way with words. A member of the Debate team and the Academic Decathlon team, Poria is able to eloquently discuss and debate current events, past events and ethical issues. Poria is knowledgeable, thoughtful and poised due to his experiences on these teams. The Debate team and the Academic Decathlon team require a great amount of studying, in addition to his classwork studies. However, Poria manages to excel both in the classroom and in his extracurricular studies. He is currently ranked in the top 3% of his class and challenges himself by taking AP classes in a variety of subjects. His favorite subject is English because he enjoys Socratic Seminars. The Socratic Seminars allow Poria to express his point of view while also understanding other people’s thoughts on particular issues. Poria excels at Socratic Seminars because they require similar skills that he has mastered on the debate team. He joined the debate team as a freshman after his friend, Eric, introduced him to the idea in middle school. During his freshman year, Poria competed in Lincoln-Douglas Debate (LD) and Extemporaneous Speaking. After his freshman year, Poria decided to try Public Forum Debate, rather than LD Debate. Public Forum Debate is a partner debate that discusses current events, which requires an extensive amount of studying. Poria spent three hours a day studying for this event.
Poria
During his junior year, Poria won first place in Extemporaneous Informative Speaking at the District UIL contest and qualified for the State Competition. He excels on the international topics because his parents are from Iran. At home, Poria watches Al Jazeera and frequently reads about foreign affairs. As a senior, Poria will continue to compete with his friend, Eric, in the Public Forum Debates. He strives to once again attend the State Competition. “Debate exposed me to many new things and helped me excel in my high school career,” said Poria. “It taught me how to write essays, the importance of timeliness on assignments and a good work ethic.” For Poria, the Academic Decathlon is similar to Debate. Both of these activities take an extensive amount of preparation and knowledge on particular topics. “The Academic Decathlon competition has made me a diverse and well-rounded student,” said Poria. “This competition has encouraged me to become more proficient in subject areas that are less familiar to me, like music and art.” In addition to taking a test over subject matter, students also give a
prepared speech over any subject matter and are interviewed by judges to test their interview skills. Poria feels that his education has been positively impacted by his participation in Academic Decathlon. To further enhance his love of science and his passion for learning, Poria joined the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) during his sophomore year. As a member of SNHS, Poria must maintain a good GPA, take a level II science course, tutor students in science and earn points by attending meetings, events and tournaments. Poria’s favorite event is the Mad Science event where the members share cool aspects of physics, chemistry and biology with middle school students. He is the Activities Manager this year and responsible for overseeing volunteering activities and the Mad Science event. In addition to SNHS, Poria is also a member of National Honor Society and English Honor Society and plans on attending the University of Houston next fall to major in Biochemistry. Eventually, he plans to transfer to another school with a nanotechnology program. His dream job is to find a cure for current incurable diseases. “With the gifts that God has given me, I feel like it is my responsibility to make this world a better place,” said Poria. “I want to be part of a scientific program, such as nanotechnology, that makes a difference in society.” We can’t wait to see the difference that Poria makes in the future! With his intelligence, ability to express himself and genuine love of learning, Poria has a bright future!

hat is your favorite color? Mine has most recently become black. I think that as an artist, the fact that black is the only color that actually has all of the colors in it makes sense to me. Perhaps, too, it is because it is just easy! Pretty much anything – and I mean anything – looks good with black! Red shoes, leopard print, you know. Over the past few years, some really amazing colors have been named the color of the year. In 2012, Pantone announced that “Tango Tangerine” was the color of that year, with “Emerald” as the color of 2013. This year’s color I am pleased to announce is “Radiant Orchid” or to be specific “PANTONE 18-3224 TPX, a shade of purple with fuchsia and pink undertones.”

Why am I pleased you might be wondering? Well, all of my childhood I dreamed of painting my room purple. Daddy, of course, would not hear of it! Even my Aunt Lona thought it was a good idea. My Aunt Lona, who both my mother and I are named after, was a purple fanatic. She loved the color so very much that she actually wore it every day! I remember her and Granny working together on their sewing projects, with Aunt Lona cutting fabrics and my Granny sewing them together. Those two were really something! Most of all, they were before their time. Aunt Lona and Granny were old school fashionistas before that word became part of our culture. Each season, they would draw out on brown paper their

patterns and after carefully measuring themselves, and of course, my mom, they would get set up to make some really cool clothes. No matter what the fashion magazines said of their day, my Aunt Lona always chose purple, and she also, big deal back then, wore pants! Scandalous! Artistically speaking, I admit I do pay attention to the season’s colors and to their trends. Often I incorporate something into my paintings, photography or wardrobe. When in 2012 orange was the hot trend, Brian bought me a Mexican Opal to wear. When emerald was elevated to the “it” color of the season, I painted the ceiling in my kitchen a swirly blend of its deepest hues mixed with gold. This year will, of course, be no different! I am already creating an entire series on canvas with a tribute to the gorgeous and youthful hue. Purple is my birthstone, and it’s also Granny’s. Nana even insisted on wearing it every Easter and to her grave! Most of all, it has always been my favorite color, and now that the art world sees all that is has to offer, I might just start wearing it again . . . both on my person and in my work!
