When you have a surgery team that has

“
procedures multiple times, they know exactly what to do to make sure everything flows well. – Dr. Ray Valdez
At Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, the surgeons at Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine are backed by an all-star operating room staff, including registered nurses and surgical technicians, all specialty trained in orthopedics. In fact, most of the staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land once worked in the Texas Medical Center. “When you come to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for orthopedic surgery, you know you are being treated by an outstanding physician,” said Vincenza “Vee” Jones, the hospital’s orthopedic and neurosurgery coordinator. “But a lot of patients don’t realize that they are also in the care of experienced, dedicated nurses and technicians who work hand-in-hand with the surgeon to ensure that patient outcomes and experiences are excellent.” Together, the physicians from Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine and the support staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital comprise a finely tuned unit, capable of performing thousands of successful operations each year. “And the real winners are our patients,” said Jones.
A Team Approach Dr. Ray Valdez, one of the hospital’s orthopedic surgeons who specializes in foot and ankle surgery, said the team is key to setting “the rhythm of the room.” “Our nursing and technical staff members are highly trained professionals who understand what the patient needs and how to support the physician to ensure success,” he said. “When you work together this closely with talented individuals, you find the team is able to anticipate each step and
support one another so each and every procedure goes as smoothly as possible. It’s not unlike a winning sports team that has been together for a long time.” Creating that type of environment for success isn’t easy, Dr. Valdez said, and it takes time.
Dr. Ray Valdez
“This is a tough job, and experience is essential,” he explained. “Our surgical staff teams don’t just show up the day of the surgery without a game plan. They review their cases the day before, just as a surgeon does, and they make sure the operating room is organized properly and that all necessary equipment is on hand. They also prepare for a variety of scenarios – based
on each individual procedure and each patient’s unique situation – so that they are ready to respond as needed.” Because it’s difficult for patients and family members to see or talk to surgical staff, their contributions to successful surgeries are often overlooked. “The public doesn’t really understand the vital prep work that goes into a surgery,” said Dr. Valdez. “The surgical team is not really visible, but what they do is valuable. They have as much passion for taking care of the patient as any surgeon, and they make our jobs a lot easier.” That passion also helps ensure that patients receive the highest quality care. “When you have a surgery team that has knowledge and experience, one that has done these procedures multiple times, they know exactly what to do to make sure everything flows well,” said Dr. Valdez. “Essentially, the safety of the procedure increases and outcomes are enhanced, too.”
Comprehensive Orthopedic Care From joint replacement and spine surgery to sports medicine, concussion management and complete care of the extremities, Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in Sugar Land provides comprehensive care for all orthopedic needs.

The group’s areas of focus include upper and lower extremities, spine care and surgery, joint replacement surgery, knee and shoulder surgery, physical therapy and rehabilitation. And because of its relationship with Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, Houston Methodist Orthopedics & Sports Medicine has access to the county’s most advanced diagnostic equipment, including the most powerful – and comfortable – MRI machines to diagnose soft tissue damage and injuries. Additionally, Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital features a comprehensive physical therapy facility, including state-of-the-art occupational and aquatic therapy, in the same building as the orthopedic and sport medicine physicians. All in all, patients are offered a full range of orthopedic services including evaluation, treatment and rehabilita-
tion, and having an exclusive orthopedic surgery staff simply enhances the hospital’s care. “This operating room team provides our surgical patients and families with the highest quality of care and satisfaction by focusing on the person as a whole,” Jones said. “We are dedicated to making sure each patient has a positive experience and surgical outcome. Our team has a commitment to the Houston Methodist core values of integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence.” Fort Bend residents benefit from having such a skilled, experienced team – backed by the best possible technology and facilities – so close to home. “There’s no reason to drive past Sugar Land for orthopedic care,” said Dr. Valdez. “We have the best of everything right here in our own neighborhood. It’s like having the home field advantage every day of the year.”

FOCU$ on FINANCE
Major Investment Themes Evolving for This Decade
O
ver 38 years of investing, I’ve observed that major gains are made by identifying trends that will last five to 10 years. We did this with energy in the 1970s, hospitals and nursing in the 1980s, drugs and healthcare in the 1990s and Master Limited Partnerships for the past decade. Below, we present evolving themes for this decade.
1
Last decade was the decade of commodity producers. This decade belongs to commodity users driven by plentiful low natural gas prices.
2 3 4
Resurgence of U.S. Manufacturing – The “Rust Belt” is reborn on the back of low and plentiful energy.
Over the next few months, we will discuss each of these themes and discuss how to position our portfolios to take advantage of it. Stay tuned. Log on to www.HardeeInvestmentGroup.com to learn more about the team, the decade themes and how we’d like to help you take advantage of these themes we’ve identified. Want to talk to a real person? Well, we want to talk to you too. Give us a call at 713-853-0879. Let’s see where this new year takes us! The views presented herein are solely those of H.H. “Will” Hardee, AWM, and do not necessarily represent the views of RBC Wealth Management. Current status of issues discussed in this letter is subject to change based upon market conditions and industry fundamentals. Clients should work with their Financial Advisor to develop investment strategies tailored to their own financial circumstances. Past performance is no guarantee of future results. The name Hardee Investment Group refers to a group of Financial Advisors working in the Houston, Texas office of RBC Wealth Management. The Hardee Investment Group is not a separate legal or corporate entity. All services offered and all memberships referenced in the presentation refer to the services offered or registrations held through RBC Wealth Management. RBC Wealth Management is not a tax advisor. All decisions regarding the tax implications of your investments should be made in consultation with your independent tax advisor. RBC Wealth Management, a division of RBC Capital Markets LLC, Member NYSE/FINRA/SIPC.
Growth investing re-emerges as the principle theme over value investing.
Did You Know? We think this decade will be the decade of the commodity USER, not PRODUCER.
De-conglomeration of Corporate America – Companies will break up or spin-off subsidiaries to become more efficient.
Peace of Mind Are you experiencing mental numbness regarding your finances during these challenging times? We can help implement financial strategies for managing and building long-lasting wealth. Let us do the work. Since 1977, we have been providing families and businesses guidance that is always In The Client’s Best Interest.

Giving Back A Soulful New Year’s Resolution
A
s we begin 2015, many of us think about New Year’s resolutions that allow us to reflect, move forward and commit. Questions in the minds of some are how can we do things to better our lives and relationships, as well as the lives of loved ones, and how can we give back? Amongst numerous New Year’s resolutions come spending more time with loved ones, getting healthier through fitness and/ or diet and the desire of giving back to a community or organization. The interesting thing is that these resolutions are similar for people of all cultures in Fort Bend. Society genuinely believes in the idea of progression and giving, but it is those who are perseverant that make ideas become reality. I have my usual New Year’s resolution list, enhanced each year, of course. I add a specific community involvement aspect on my list, beyond my normal commitments, that allows me to give and grow even further. I am a big believer that helping others matures the soul. If we feed our minds with education and meaningful work, and we strengthen our hearts through relationships we build with loved ones and friends, then does not the soul need to develop and grow? After all, the soul is eternal, and therefore, its necessity to advance should be far greater. I met a young man recently named Bronson Kersey who spoke with passion about helping others as part of his New Year’s resolution, and his outlook on life is where we both saw eye-to-eye. We decided to highlight his cause as it affects all cultures in Fort Bend. This, we thought, would be a great giving back opportunity to consider for those who wanted to do something meaningful for another human life.
Bronson Kersey and Mr. Cool (Dzilanyo Kofi).
Kersey’s sister, Kasidy, began learning about the magnitude of human trafficking in Houston and worldwide while in college. Kersey took a serious interest and began educating himself through research. He shared that Houston was one of the world’s largest hubs for trafficking humans in the United States. He saw the locations where those who were being trafficked were being housed in Greater Houston. “I learned about the supply and demand for trafficking and how much that influences the $32 billion dollar industry annually worldwide,” Kersey said. “In Fort Bend County alone, there is so much assistance needed with trafficking.” Kersey began helping an organization called Elijah Rising, which educates citizens about the industry. Elijah Rising, http:// elijahrising.org/awareness/van-tours/, provides van tours of human trafficking areas in Greater Houston to educate volunteers. Since the problem is worldwide, Kersey traveled to the Volta Region in Ghana, Africa, in October 2014. Ghana is a growing area for human trafficking, and Lake Volta provides much of the fish and energy for Ghana. To increase profits, many of the boats use

young boys and sometimes young girls to do the labor. These children work long hours with no pay. Kersey spent a few days at an orphanage near the lake, where several children had been brought after being rescued from suppression. This is where he met Dzilanyo Kofi (aka Mr. Cool), an 11 year-old boy who lost his ability to walk due to an injury that occurred during his time in bondage. The two had an instant connection. Mr. Cool’s spinal injury prevents the use of his legs or any control of them, so most of his movement is done by crawling. Kersey researched the injury and realized he needed approximately $23,000 for the surgery, along with funds for physical therapy and hospital visits to follow. This is when Kersey and his girlfriend Adrienne Dorman created a website for people to support Mr. Cool: https://www.crowdrise.com/believeincool. Where there is a will, there is a way. Kersey’s New Year’s resolution is to eradicate human trafficking one day at a time with assistance from the community. His vision and hope is for total eradication of human trafficking in this region, even if it takes a lifetime. “Mr. Cool is the first example of a positive future,” said Kersey. As you finalize your New Year’s resolutions, and if your list involves giving back, I hope you choose what warms your heart and nurtures your soul just as Bronson Kersey has. Happy New Year!
Adrienne Dorman, Bronson Kersey and Zeenat Mitha working with the community to raise funds for Mr. Cool.

wonderful thing happens every new year. People commit to new fitness and weight loss programs as part of their attempt to restore health, energy and vitality. Why is this so wonderful? It increases awareness about the importance of diet and exercise and improves the health of those involved. Unfortunately, most people fall off of the proverbial wagon after the first month or two.
The Problem with Traditional Weight Loss Programs
The problem with many weight loss systems is that they cater to the masses without considering individual need. They use a “one size fits all” approach. This approach works for some but leaves many to ponder why the weight will not come off the way it used to. Most nutritional diet plans are based on calorie consumption. Not enough thought is given to the quality of the calories being consumed. For example, there are a number of companies that provide calorie controlled meals. This concept works well for portion control; however, the quality of the food being used is poor, and as the age old adage goes, “You are what you eat.” Chemicals, radiated foods, ultra pasteurization, processing, lack of nutrient density, genetically modified foods, cloned meats and unidentified food intolerances all taint many of these so called “healthy foods.” Many of these factors can cause internal inflammation when ingested leading to an increased risk for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain and more. As if that were not bad enough, weight loss is not just about calories. The concept of the calorie is based on the amount of heat a food generates when it is burned in
FOCUS ON HEALTH By Dr. Peter Osborne
A Revolutionary Approach to Weight Loss a sealed chamber. Although calorie estimation can be useful, it does not take into consideration the effect that food can have on hormone levels. To make things even more confusing, different foods can affect people’s hormones differently. For example, some people do not tolerate carbohydrates very well. For these individuals, carbs cause excessive insulin production, which in turn tells the body to store fat. This can happen even if the individual is not “over eating” on calories.
Exercise Myths Debunked
Exercise is also a critical and key component for successful weight loss. The common perception is that performing cardiovascular exercise is enough to help a person with weight loss. This concept is not entirely true. Cardio is overrated as a form of exercise. Although it helps tone blood vessels, it does very little for muscle tone. The key to weight loss with exercise programs is achieving adequate lean muscle mass. I am not talking about working out with weights to become Herculean. Many fear that this will happen, but it is just not true. The fact of the matter is that muscle utilizes energy. The more tone your muscles, the more energy your body expends while at rest. Addition-
ally, maintaining solid muscle tone as we age has been shown to increase the life span. A common problem with exercise is time. People typically do not want to take an hour or more daily to go to a gym and exercise. I recommend the 10 minute rule. Everyone has at least 10 minutes to give to exercise. The key to this rule is that the exercise must be intense. Try the following exercises: push-ups, pull ups, lunges and squats. Perform two sets of each exercise within a 10 minute time frame. Don’t worry if you can’t perform a lot of repetitions of these exercises when you first get started. The key will be consistency over time. If you do it daily, your body will get stronger and build lean muscle mass. As this happens, you will notice your clothes fitting better, your energy increasing and your sleep improving. Do not weigh yourself on a scale. As you lose fat, you will gain muscle. Therefore, your weight may not fluctuate down as much as you want it to. Weight is not as important as body composition.
Vibration Fit
Scientific advances in exercise are rarely discussed in the main stream. For example, a revolutionary technology created by the space program has made exercising for less time even more effective. This innovative technology combines body weight exercise with vibrational forces to accelerate muscle and bone growth, making weight loss faster, easier and longer lasting. By combining specialized lab testing, genetics and customized nutritional protocols with monitored vibration assisted exercises, no weight loss plateau is too challenging.

Timeless Plastic Surgery Gives Back to Local Community The most wonderful time of the year is too often felt as the most trying for some. Amongst the hustle and bustle of spreading holiday cheer, the Timeless physicians and staff helped slow the hands of time by volunteering at the Fort Bend County Women’s Center in Richmond, Texas. Timeless extended their “Concierge Care” while serving dinner to the Center’s clients, and personal belongings from the staff and physicians were donated to those in need. The Fort Bend County Women’s Center offers services and shelter to women and children who have been affected by domestic and sexual violence, giving them the opportunity to build a stronger family foundation necessary to jumpstart their new lives. Representatives at the shelter provide counseling, medical, legal and crisis support, bringing healing to survivors of abuse. Timeless Plastic Surgery would like to thank the center for appreciating their support and forming a friendship that will help build community growth, while increasing victim awareness. Volunteers for the event included Timeless staffers Dr. Chang, Dr. Mehta, Pearl, Sarah, Kaitlin, Karrie, Lyndal, Brooke, Rosie and Megan. Residents at the shelter can be supported by community donations, fundraising events and volunteer efforts from people like you!

Texas Direct Auto
PROUDLY SUPPORTS WOMEN IN NEED In their ongoing commitment to community support, Texas Direct Auto is a proud sponsor of the 10th annual Girlfriends Giggle, benefitting the Fort Bend County Women’s Center. This year’s event, described as the ultimate “Grown-Up Girls’ Pajama Party,” will be held on Thursday, February 5th from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Stafford Centre on 10505 Cash Road in Stafford, Texas. Billed as the “good-cause event of the year,” Girlfriends Giggle is a celebration of female friendship in support of local women in need. Attendees can enjoy fine local restaurant fare and a martini bar, participate in live and silent auctions, boutique shopping, and dance lessons, compete in a pajama contest, and indulge in spa luxuries like manicures, massages, and hair-styling – all in the name of helping survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault achieve safety and self-sufficiency. Regarding Texas Direct Auto’s partnership with the event for a 3rd consecutive year, Jessica DeMarr, Director of Business Development, says, “The Fort Bend County Women’s Center provides such a vital and important service to our community. Assisting survivors of domestic violence and providing them with the resources to start a new life is a mission we are proud to support.” Tickets for Girlfriends Giggle start at $67 – the same amount needed to shelter a survivor of domestic violence or sexual assault for a day at the Fort Bend County Women’s Center’s 65-bed emergency center. In nearly 35 years of serving the community, the non-profit agency has helped more than 40,000 local women
and children achieve violence-free lifestyles, but they could never have done it without the generous contributions and support from the local Fort Bend community – caring people just like you! Last year’s event sold out with 1,000 “Gigglers” in attendance, and raised a record-breaking $141,370 for the Women’s Center. This year the goals are even higher, and Texas Direct Auto urges all the lovely ladies of Fort Bend to grab your feather boas and your favorite girlfriends and head out to the Stafford Centre on February 5th for a fabulous evening of female fun in support of a very worthy cause. Tickets to Girlfriends Giggle can be purchased online at fortbendwomenscenter.org or at the Fort Bend County Women’s Center office, located at 905 3rd Street in Rosenberg. For information on becoming a sponsor or vendor at the event, please contact Anne Budill at (281)344-5756 or abudill@fortbendwomenscenter.org.

New Year, New You
Increase Your Energy for Work, Home and Life
C
ommon sense about employee health and wellness programs prevails through hard dollar savings in three fundamental areas: savings on health care costs, reduction of lost work days and lower voluntary attrition. H-E-B estimated that moving 10 percent of its employees from high and medium-risk to low-risk status yields a return on investment (ROI) of six to one. Over 20 years, Rosen Hotels has saved $200 million. Over 10 years, Johnson & Johnson saved $250 million, and from 2002 to 2008, the return was $2.71 for every dollar spent. In 2001, MD Anderson Cancer Center created a workers’ compensation and injury care unit. Within six years, lost workdays declined by 80 percent. Cost savings, calculated by multiplying the reduction in lost workdays by average pay rates, totaled $1.5 million. Voluntary turnover at the software firm SAS Institute is just four percent. At Biltmore tourism enterprise, the rate was nine percent in 2009, down from 19 percent in 2005. Leaders demonstrate their commitment to wellness programs by walking the talk, which is a typical leader–follower model. It’s time for a “leader–leader” model to flourish, meaning employees at the top, middle and so-called bottom lead their own good habits. If you haven’t already, build good wellness lifestyle habits at work. In addition to the cost savings stated above, health and wellness programs at work increase your personal energy for work, home and life. Let SuperSlow Zone be the exercise battery for your healthy habit. For more information, visit www.SSZsugarland.com or call 281-201-2287. See ad on page 49.
Experience Aveda at Salon Eben & Day Spa

n a time when society places a high value on appearance, coloring hair has become a commonplace experience. When getting your hair colored, using healthy products is just as important as choosing a fitting color. Chemicals in most hair dyes sometimes can be damaging and leave hair malnourished. Strong chemicals mixed with unnatural ingredients sometimes cause hair to become brittle, greasy and full of hapless split ends. This is why when choosing a brand of hair dye, it is imperative to choose products composed with natural ingredients such as Aveda. Aveda products come from a long line of all-natural, plant-based ingredients, which are known to be high-quality, eco-friendly and significantly healthier for your hair. While Aveda products are sold at most high-end salon and retail stores, having a professional stylist color hair can significantly increase the quality and prevent unnecessary damage from misuse of products. Salon Eben and Day Spa is a family-owned, professional salon that has been using Aveda products for over 24 years. With their experienced staff, relaxing atmosphere and use of all-natural Aveda products, your hair will be left healthier, happier and with the least possible adversities from hair coloring. The Timeless Dimple
D
imple creation, also called Dimpleplasty, is the newest trend in cosmetic surgery. Dr. Peter Chang, M.D., D.M.D. of Timeless Plastic Surgery in Sugar Land now performs four times as many Dimpleplasty procedures as he did just a couple of years ago. Natural dimples are muscle defects in the cheek where skin is stuck to underlying tissue. Dimple creation is an outpatient procedure that consists of the doctor making a tiny incision inside a patient’s cheek. There are no cuts on the outside of the face. A small piece of cheek muscle is removed, and the remaining muscle is attached to the underside of the skin with a dissolvable suture. The incision on the inside of the cheek leaves a permanent indentation in the skin, creating the dimple. The Timeless Dimple offered only at Timeless Plastic Surgery is an updated modification of the original procedure, said Dr. Chang, one of the few area cosmetic surgeons who offers the service. “Dimples can be more personalized. Patients can choose designer dimples; they may want them long, short, deep or shallow,” he explained. The patient also chooses exactly where they would like the dimples to be on their cheeks. Dr. Chang has more than 15 years of training and experience in cosmetic surgery and has earned two Ivy League degrees and two doctoral degrees. He is trusted in the community for his personal concierge and professional service. Timeless Plastic Surgery is located at 1327 Lake Pointe Parkway, Suite 300. For more information, visit www. t’s a new year and time for a new you. Known for its quality surgical services and on-site operating room, Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery has just made your New Year’s beauty resolution easier with the addition of their new medical spa featuring the most “cutting edge technology and procedures,” according to Dr. Eric Humble, the man who made Sugar Land Face and Body a reality. A board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Humble has helped transform the lives of hundreds of patients, and now, he plans to assist even more patients with his comprehensive medical spa headed up by Marty Knesek, R.N. Spa services include the traditional procedures, such as botox and fillers – cosmetic injections that are used to revolumize the face, smooth wrinkles and to create fuller lips – but the spa is expanding its services to include even more options for patients, including procedures such as Vampire Facial, Fractora, HydraFacial, CoolSculpting, Micro-Needling and Ultherapy. A relatively new procedure, a Vampire Facial involves using a patient’s own Plasma Rich Protein to help stimulate one’s own collagen production, improving skin texture while toning the skin, according to Knesek. With the addition of these non-invasive, non-surgical options that utilize the latest technology to help patients achieve noticeable results, there is something for everyone at Sugar Land Face and Body’s new medical spa. o you want to have more energy and prevent illness? There are many powerful antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that can help keep you healthy and energized this flu season. Intravenous delivery allows you to bypass the digestive system and get 100 percent of the vitamins directly into the bloodstream and delivered to cells! The body can also begin to use these vitamins instantly, since there is no wait time for the vitamins to pass through the digestive system. IV vitamin C is great for immune support, infections, allergies, surgical healing, cancer, herpes, shingles and sports injury repair. Myers have been found to be effective against hypertension, COPD, asthma, migraines, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes and even the common cold. his month marks Dr. Elissa Wedemeyer’s 26th year of practicing independent optometry in Fort Bend. She recently celebrated the completion of her fifth year at her current location at University Avenue and Highway 6. Dr. Wedemeyer is pleased to be practicing in a field where there is constant research and improvements in the treatment options for improving vision correction and eye health care. She utilizes the optical coherence tomography instrument (OCT) that acts as a noninvasive form of imaging, using light waves to detect conditions like Wet Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Cystoid Macular Edema, Glaucoma and other conditions affecting the optic nerve and macula. These conditions can go undetected for many months, threatening loss of vision without proper diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Wedemeyer stays abreast of the latest vision correcting improvements in contact lens materials and designs. She fits the new scleral contact lenses for patients with keratoconus and other distorted corneal conditions. She has treated many patients using the mypoia correcting CRT (Corneal Reshaping Treatment) lens to prevent myopia progression. Her staff is educated in all of the advanced lens designs and coating to provide a thinner, lighter and greater field of vision in eye glass designs. They also have a full line of frames for the whole family. Dr. Wedemeyer and her staff take pleasure in providing their patients with a high tech, comfortable and inviting office. When Diet and Exercise Is Not Enough
S
taying healthy and looking good is a common goal for most women. Sometimes, a hectic lifestyle and stressful jobs make it nearly impossible to maintain an ideal body. Also, women often gain or maintain resistant fat in undesirable areas regardless of what they do. Over time, this unwanted fat can be very discouraging and severely impact their body image. There are many options available to help address unwanted fat. By far, the most effective and reliable is liposuction. The procedure is safe, affordable and can target the difficult, stubborn areas that no amount of diet and exercise can target. Sugar Land Plastic Surgery’s staff has seen first-hand time and time again how liposuction can make such a remarkable and immediate difference in the appearance of the body, especially in those stubborn areas. This extra help gives patients so much motivation, as well as the confidence that they achieve further fitness and live healthier lifestyles. Sugar Land Plastic Surgery invites you to see for yourself. Consultations with Dr. John T. Nguyen are always complimentary. Dr. Nguyen is known for his excellent technical skills and dedication to his patients. He applies his talent, training and experience to achieve natural aesthetic enhancements that compliment the beauty in each patient. With your commitment and Sugar Land Plastic Surgery’s help and support in the new year, you can achieve the results you have been working so hard for. RESOLVE TO GET
Healthier
Diets Don’t Work. According to the Journal of Clinical Psychology, 45 percent of Americans make New Year’s resolutions each year, and weight-related resolutions top the list. Unfortunately, only about eight percent achieve any type of resolution, weight-related or not. If you’ve made – and then broken – the same old weight or health-oriented resolutions each January, you’re not alone. It might be time to focus on research-proven approaches to get healthier that actually work – without gimmicks, diets that eliminate foods or buying strange foods and equipment.
Start Well: Eat Breakfast Start the day right, and it really can make things go better all day. Research has repeatedly shown that people who eat breakfast tend to take in more nutrients like calcium, iron, protein and fiber, are more alert and can concentrate better, and they may even have better success with weight management. To get yourself off to a strong start, think about combining protein, carbohydrates and low-fat dairy. Some possibilities are whole grain cereal and a high protein yogurt, an English muffin with peanut butter or an egg sandwich with fruit and yogurt.
Eat Rough(age): Make Fiber a Priority Fiber, found in whole grain wheat, barley, corn and oats, as well as in fruits, vegetables and beans, helps keep things moving easily through the di-
gestive tract. Remember that grain fiber has different nutritional benefits than fruits and vegetables, so you need both. Fiber is also filling, providing volume with few calories, because our bodies don’t have the enzymes to break it down. But fiber can be digested and used for fuel by the 10 trillion bacteria that live in the colon and prevent numerous health conditions.
Get Your Facts Straight: If It Sounds Too Good to Be True . . . Losing 10 pounds in two weeks only to regain it in eight makes no sense. Whether you’ve tried to go gluten-free, low carb or avoid all white foods, chances are high that your efforts didn’t result in long lasting effects. What does work? A balanced eating pattern and an active lifestyle. There is no one perfect

diet, and anyone who says otherwise is typically selling a book or products promising weight loss. Registered dietitian nutritionists can be trusted to provide credible, evidence-based information that can be tailored to your lifestyle and taste preferences. In addition, eating patterns such as those recommended by the Mediterranean Diet, the DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) and MyPlate can provide guidance on the types of foods to include in your meals.
Move It: Walk, Dance or Ride Your Way to Health Unless you use it often – two to three times per week or more – skip the gym membership. Walk outside, walk the dog, dance in your kitchen, work in the garden or ride your bike to run errands. And, if possible, do it every day with friends for fun, and make it part of your regular lifestyle.
Make It Stick: Schedule and Track Your Progress Make a schedule of your health goals, and keep track of progress by writing in a food and activity journal or calendar. Note things like how you feel before and after meals and exercise. You may be surprised by what you learn.
How to Spot a Fad Diet in 30 Seconds or Less Fad diets come and go and return again. Here are some obvious clues that a diet is a fad rather than a realistic approach for becoming healthy. Sounds too good or easy to be true. Promises rapid weight loss – five to 10 pounds a week – or “miracle cures.” Allows only certain foods or food groups, cutting out others. Promotes a product, special herb, vitamin or other compound. Can only be “followed” temporarily but is not supervised by a doctor. Hard to imagine or difficult to follow the diet forever. Doesn’t recommend a form of exercise or says that it’s unnecessary. Warns that one food or food group will make you seriously ill or worse. Makes recommendations based on pseudo-science not endorsed by credible organizations or peer reviewed by other scientists. Cites research that is preliminary, based on animals, has very few subjects or uses poor methodology.

moderation and move more to feel good.
• Eat for Hunger. Make sure you
are eating because you are hungry and not for other reasons.

whether the food is an “everyday” food or “sometimes” food and eat accordingly, enjoying every bite.

MAKE 2015 YOUR YEAR TO IMPROVE
L
ose weight, quit smoking, find a new job and get out of debt. Does this sound familiar? Millions of Americans will resolve to change their lives in the new year, but few will stick with their goals. In fact, a recent survey by the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE) found six in 10 people will strive to improve their financial well-being in 2015. Changing your financial habits is a resolution you cannot afford to overlook. It’s time to flex your financial muscle. The experts at the non-profit National Endowment for Financial Education offer these seven tips to help make your financial resolutions stick:
1
Do it now. Many will wait until they feel the time is right to begin new behaviors. If you wait until after the big party to start watching your diet or until after that big purchase to start saving money, the ideal time will never present itself.
2
Write down your financial resolutions. The NEFE survey found setting a budget, making a plan to get out of debt and boosting retirement savings are the top priorities for Americans in the coming year. Clearly articulate why you think your resolution is a good idea, steps you can take to reach your goal and what you hope to gain. Post your list where you will see it each day.
3
Identify your money morals. Understanding your values and attitudes about money will bring clarity to the decision-making process. NEFE offers various online tools, such as the LifeValues Quiz, to help identify your values and make resolutions based on those values. Visit SmartAboutMoney. org for the LifeValues Quiz.
4
Recruit a “financial buddy.” Share your resolutions with a trusted family member or friend who can provide support in helping you meet your financial goals. Find someone who will hold you accountable and will set a good example for you to follow.
5
Vary goal intensity. Give yourself a short-term objective, such as paying more than the minimum on one credit card this month. A long-term goal could be setting up – and adding to – the emergency savings account you know you should have but didn’t get around to starting last year.
6
Monitor your progress regularly. If you are trying to reduce debt, make sure you check your balances often. Set aside a couple of hours each week to address your finances. Over time, this will become second nature and part of your normal routine.
7
Address conflict logically. If you find yourself breaking a financial goal by reverting to old spending habits, identify what value might be causing you to stray, and take the time to ask yourself if the decision is appropriate given your current financial situation. For help with setting goals and getting your finances in order in 2015, visit www.SmartAboutMoney.org. Source: Family Features

When asked why he enjoys music so much, Steven said, “Music entertains people and myself. When I was growing up, my dad and I would jam to music in the car like Alicia Keys, Kem and various other artists. Both of my parents love music. My mom is very mu-
Steven sical. She sings and plays the trumpet. I love the way chords match up in the song to alter someone’s emotions and how they make you feel. In movies, they use chords to generate emotions like suspense, happiness or anger. Music feels great to me when I play it, sing to it and dance to it.” Steven is also a member of the varsity choir at school. He was bass section leader for two years and performs at school events, as well as in the University Interscholastic League Competition, where he qualified in region for two years. He also sings for The Voices of Genesis Choir at his church and dances with the African Dance Troupe performing cultural dances at local events. Steven’s preferred subject is math. He enjoys problem solving and the challenge of complex solutions. His favorite teacher is his freshman English teacher, Ashondra Johnson Hernandez. According to Steven, Hernandez makes English fun to learn, keeps it interesting and engages the students in activities to keep them focused. She is always available to help before and after school hours. Being honest and trustworthy are two important values to Steven. He considers his family and friends paramount in his
life. He said, “My family and friends are always there for me, through the good times and the bad. I can trust them to be honest with me, as I am with them.” When he is not busy with school work or band, Steven spends his free time with his friends watching TV and donating his time to community service. Steven takes most Advanced Placement (AP) classes and is ranked in the top 25 percent of his senior class. He is a student council class representative, involved in several school organizations, assists his teachers with projects and is a part of the drug, alcohol and safety committee. Steven also volunteers at the Houston Humane Society. For the past two years, he worked as a lifeguard and pool manager at Greater Houston Pool Management.
Steven’s goal is to attend college next fall at either Howard University in Washington D.C. or Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, Texas to major in civil engineering and to minor in music. With scholarship offers already coming in, Steven is prepared to take the next step in his successful future. Congratulations on your leadership skills and talent, and good luck as you continue to inspire others with your great sense of humor, dedication and determination.
“Music feels great to me when I play it, sing to it and dance to it.” – Steven Taylor.

Gingerbread: Quality Education in Fort Bend County
Fort Bend Christian Academy (FBCA) has an exciting story to tell. Beginning with seven students in 1987, the school has grown to almost 900 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12. It is strategically located on 35 acres in the heart of Sugar Land, one of the fastest growing communities in the United States. A full-curriculum Christian school, Fort Bend Christian Academy is at the forefront of private educational providers in the Houston/Sugar Land area. Passionate about students and their future, FBCA faculty and staff are committed to influencing this next generation of leaders through a stringent academic curriculum that results in producing young men and women of integrity. Now is the time to turn our thoughts to the new year. Last year, the Gingerbread Family of learning centers opened its newest location in Richmond, Texas. For over 33 years, The Gingerbread House Learning Center and the new Gingerbread Kids’ Academy have created an environment where children can learn and grow. The programs are designed for children ages 8 weeks to 12 years. Research has shown that in order for a child to be successful in school and in life, they must begin with a strong foundation in learning. Gingerbread has designed a curriculum that includes an emphasis on reading, writing, science, math, discovery and exploration, as well as social skills development. The infant and toddler programs focus on the development of both gross and fine motor skills along with basic language development. The 3 to 5 year-old Pre-School and Pre-K programs focus on academics, peer relationships and preparation for entry into Kindergarten and elementary school. The Gingerbread After-School programs, located onsite at Frost, Hutchison and Hubenak Elementary, as well as onsite at the Gingerbread Kids’ Academy, offer homework assistance, arts, crafts, games and sports. A new year means new beginnings. The Gingerbread Family invites you to come and visit. Both locations are now accepting enrollments for the 2015 school year. A One-Stop Shop for Gymnastics & Karate You’ll see kids flipping, tumbling, birthday partying, cheerleading and karate chopping with exceptional skill. It’s more fun than the circus coming to town, and your kids will learn many new skills. For the last 35 years, Robert Gifford, founder of Safety America Karate, has provided Fort Bend County with the highest level of excellence in martial arts training. Now, Gifford’s sights are set on creating the best gymnastics centers as well. “It’s not only about kids learning expertise in martial arts and gymnastics, but it’s important that they gain strength, confidence, good health and have a positive experience while learning their skills,” Gifford explained. Gifford’s multi-activity centers have something for kids of all ages starting with Mom & Me programs for toddlers ages 18 months to 2 ½ years. Then, the tiny tots get into the action at the ages of 2 ½ to 3 ½. Super tots begin at ages 3 ½ to 4 years. And of course, there are plenty of classes for kids 5 and up. At this one-stop shop, Joey can be doing karate while Ashley is doing gymnastics or tumbling. While visiting, inquire about their zip-line birthday parties or summer camps. “We’ve always believed that a topquality staff, a targeted curriculum and the right mix of discipline and fun is a recipe for success! Come see what we have to offer.” Gifford’s motto is, “Do your best. We ask no more, we expect no less.” For more information, contact Sugar Land Gymnastics at 281-240-0999 or visit www.SugarLandGymnastics.com.

International Preparatory School: Excellence, Diversity, Communication and Enrichment Parents have several choices when it comes to their children. Those who visit the International Preparatory School are looking for a fresh philosophy and a renewed energy in teaching. Smaller class sizes rank as the number one concern. Why? This provides individual attention for students who require more support in some areas while addressing the needs of the gifted child. This all translates into a school where both the teachers and administration set common expectations in an open, interactive, understanding and energizing manner. Parents want a safe environment that maintains a high standard of discipline and respect. Emphasis on a well-rounded education makes participation in extracurricular activities an integral part of the everyday curriculum. Studies demonstrate that healthy competition, be it through math or chess clubs, lead to a higher motivation in learning. Going to school should be an adventure. That adventure begins now at age three with a creative learning environment, which continues through elementary and middle school. The curriculum aspires balanced academics while developing a strong social, physical and moral aptitude. The International Preparatory School is the choice many parents make for their children as it provides an environment that fosters the gifted and accelerated student, as well as the under-confident. If you have great expectations for your child, come by and experience the vibrant atmosphere at the International Preparatory School for yourself. Join the International Preparatory School staff for their 2015-2016 Open House on January 22nd from 6:30 to 8 pm at 1717 Dulles Avenue in Missouri City. Kn.I.L.E. Center offers two cornerstone programs. Kn.I.L.E. Prep Academy (KPA) is a 3rd through 12th grade private school that works with both sides of the bell curve, struggling students or those who want to get ahead. Education is not a “one size fits all” concept, so the school follows the child’s unique way of learning instead of the child following the school’s way of teaching. Kn.I.L.E. Prep Academy customizes students’ curriculums so they can work at their own pace and discover what their true learning potential really is. Kn.I.L.E. Center’s other cornerstone program is Kn.I.L.E. ECN, an after school coaching program. It’s been the experience that in most cases, repeating the material, like in traditional tutoring, is not the right solution for every child. In most cases, the reason for “the slide” is weak cognitive skills that do not allow a child to process or retain information properly. In these cases, very specific sets of exercises to strengthen these weak skills, combined with academic assistance, are the roadmap to a child’s educational success. Sometimes looking at alternative ways of learning can be scary as to what kind of results it might bring. However, Kn.I.L.E. Center has seen tremendous success with their customized and new approach to education and thus has been awarded Best Tutoring for two years in a row (2013 and 2014) and Best Private School (2014). Call 281-761-6610 today and see what a difference a customized education can make for your child! Visit www.knilecenter.com for more information.

Two Fort Bend ISD high school football squads recently made generous donations to Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Breast Care Center. Athletes from the Clements High School and Stephen F. Austin High School football teams donated a number of post-mastectomy pocketed button-up shirts to the Center. The shirts are specially designed for the unique needs of women who have undergone a mastectomy; the Breast Care Center will give them to patients over the next year. “All of us at the Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Breast Care Center admire the generosity and kindness that these young men have demonstrated through their donation,” said Maria Socci, the Breast Care Center’s care navigator. “Their donation will enable us to provide these special shirts to our patients free of charge as a show of support for their fight against breast cancer.” Clements Head Coach Keith Knowles began the effort last year when his team captains wanted to use a portion of the money they had raised to buy post-mastectomy shirts rather than more football equipment. “I always try and teach our players the importance of giving back to the community,” said Knowles. “I am amazed every day at the character and quality of our young men.” This year, the football players at Austin High School joined their counterparts at Clements and added to the donation. “The players’ willingness to make a donation like this demonstrates a great deal of maturity and compassion on their part,” Austin Head Coach Dan Schreiber said. “These young men recognize that fighting cancer is a difficult task, and they wanted to do their part to make it a little bit easier for the women in our community.” For more information or to schedule online, visit houstonmethodist.org/sugarland and click the “Appointments & Online Scheduling” button on the right side of the screen, or call 281242-PINK (7465).

Fort Bend First: Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Physicians Perform New Procedure to Relieve Post-Surgical Abdominal Pain Physicians at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital recently performed Fort Bend’s first transversus abdominis plane (TAP) block with laparoscopic colon surgery to minimize post-surgical pain. TAP blocks numb the nerves supplying the anterior abdominal wall prior to abdominal surgery. They are performed under general anesthesia in the operating room. The TAP block limits the amount of post-operative pain, minimizes the need for post-surgery pain medication and reduces the length of stay in the hospital. The end result is that when combined with minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, TAP blocks enable patients to return to normal activities – including work – much more quickly than with conventional abdominal surgery. “Traditional colon surgery – whether it was for colon cancer, diverticulitis or other reasons – typically requires a substantial recovery period,” said Ali Mahmood, M.D., board-certified colorectal surgeon at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. “It was intimidating for patients because they knew they would have a long hospital stay and would be lying in bed at home for weeks, often in pain. But today we can use the TAP block – along with laparoscopic surgery – to achieve the same beneficial surgical results while minimizing pain and recovery time.” John Stubblefield was the first patient in Fort Bend to receive a

TAP block prior to laparoscopic colon surgery. Stubblefield sought out Dr. Mahmood for abdominal pain caused by diverticulitis, a common digestive disease, that was growing worse. “Diverticulitis can be a very challenging problem,” said Dr. Mahmood. “It can impair patients from carrying out their day to day activities, and if the attacks get severe, it can cause a patient to become septic and get into serious, life-threatening trouble. Surgery is often the best course of treatment.” Stubblefield was apprehensive about going into the hospital and worried about a long and painful recovery. But when his diverticulitis began severely impacting his quality of life, he realized that avoiding surgery was no longer an option. The morning of the operation, board-certified anesthesiologist David Green, M.D., administered a general anesthesia to Stubblefield in the operating room at Houston Methodist Sugar Land. When the anesthesia had taken effect, Dr. Green injected a local anesthesia into the space between abdominal muscles to perform the TAP block, and Dr. Mahmood proceeded with surgery. “TAP blocks are a relatively new procedure that have a tremendous benefit to patients undergoing abdominal surgery,” said Dr. Green. The local anesthesia typically lasts 36 to 38 hours, which is enough time to allow healing to begin and reduce the need for powerful pain medications post-surgery. The TAP block is quick, painless and effective in controlling post-operative pain.” Stubblefield was released from Houston Methodist Sugar Land after a three-day stay. Prior to discharge, he was walking well under his own strength, eating soft meals and taking minimal pain medication. After arriving home, he did not need a single pain pill. And just 13 days after surgery, he received clearance from Dr. Mahmood to return to work. “I never thought my surgery would go so smoothly,” said Stubblefield. “I thank Dr. Mahmood, Dr. Green, the wonderful nursing staff on 4 East at Houston Methodist Sugar Land and especially my wife for helping me with this operation. Now, I live pain-free and no longer have the fear of that terrible disease hanging over me.” For a referral to Dr. Mahmood or another colorectal surgeon on staff at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, call 281-2747500. The History of Fort Bend County: Part 2
A
fter the Woodpecker-Jaybird war in the 1880s, the Democratic Party, who was at the time more conservative than the Republicans, wrote a constitution that provided “protection of the white race” and “an honest and economical government.” This party controlled the area until the United States Supreme Court ruling in 1953 deemed it unconstitutional and forbid the practice of excluding those of African decent from voting. The Jaybird Association accepted this ruling but continued to practice for a few years before disbanding in 1959. Fort Bend remained a Democratic stronghold until the 1970s when the Republican Party began to take power. During this time, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party had slowly switched roles over the years. The Republicans had become more of what we are familiar with today, which is more conservative and keeping with the original ideas, whereas the Democratic Party became more progressive and had new ideas. Railroads brought population to the county, and most immigrants were from
central Europe, specifically Germany, Austria and Czechoslovakia. They came to Fort Bend to farm or to work on farms. Many of them were Catholic, and this, along with their distinct languages and cultures, brought a new diversity to the area that was mainly populated by Anglo-Protestants. Their agricultural achievements contributed highly to the county’s financial stability and the buildup of such towns as Beasley, Orchard and Needville. The evergrowing towns also demanded the need for a railroad and made the towns of Rosenberg, Stafford and Missouri City grow even more, not to mention enabled growth and trade for the incorporated town of Sugar Land. Since 1919, the production and drilling for oil and gas and the production of energy brought more tax money to the area than any other industry. It wasn’t fort bend

until the oil boom in the mid-1980s that this began to change, and companies like Exxon, Gulf and Houston Lighting and Power began to lose their top places as the county’s economic powers. But it was farming and ranching that was the backbone of Fort Bend County’s economy and social life since its inception. The recession in the 1890s, the flooding of the Brazos River in 1899 and the Galveston hurricane of 1900 wiped out many farms in the area and forced many farmers into tenantry. Ten years later, the majority of the county’s farmers were working as cash or share tenants. During the years of World War II, a great number of men from the area fought Japan and Germany, farm tenantry dropped and ownership of farms was on the rise again. Fort Bend boasted large amounts of open land that was perfect for ranching. Free roaming herds of Longhorn cattle prompted many of the first settlers of Fort Bend to combine farming and ranching. The Fort Bend County Book of Brands showed that many farmers with a small amount of land tried to turn a profit by raising cattle. Along with the rest of the Texas ranchers, when the bottom fell out of the cattle business, many Fort Bend ranchers fenced off of their land and mixed their herds with Shorthorns, Brahman and Hereford cattle. Today, more farms in Fort Bend produce beef than any other cash crop.

What
Kind of Wine
Do You Like?
D
oes this question fill you with trepidation and fear when asked by the sommelier, or does it make your heart leap in joy for the possibilities?
Maybe I’m exaggerating a bit, but believe me, I know that question can lead to a lot of anxiety. Fortunately, though, when you are asked that by your sommelier at a restaurant, he is really trying to help you make a selection you will find delicious, not make you feel clueless and lost. Sommeliers are world class, educated professionals and want to guide you to finding the perfect bottle for your meal. But, they need a little help from you to make that happen. So, how do you answer that question of what wine you like when you really aren’t sure? I have a few ideas for you.
Start with red versus white or pink. Do you gravitate to one of those colors or the other? Or, are you more
driven by food choices or mood? I know that I like wines of all color, sometimes depending on my mood and sometimes depending on the food I am eating. Some of my friends, though, only prefer red or white. What about you?
Consider grape variety. If you lean toward white wines, some of the most popular grape varieties are Chardonnay, which can be buttery and oaky or crisp, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, which can be anything from super sweet to very dry, and Moscato. For reds, more popular grape varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, which can go from juicy and fruity to earthy, and Merlot.
You might like a particular country or region. For example, a California Chardonnay is likely going to be more round and buttery than a French Chardonnay from Chablis, which will tend to be more crisp and clean tasting. A New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc will

have a more grassy, green flavor than a California, Chilean or French Sauvignon Blanc. Don’t worry, you don’t have to remember all of these details every time, but the more you know, the more the sommeleier can help you. Knowing those things can really help you find the best bottle of wine for you on any list. One way to keep track of your preferences is to use the notes section on your smartphone, or better yet, download my free iPhone app, Wine4.Me, and tell it what you like as you try new wines. Keeping track of grape type, country and region and sharing this with your sommelier might sound like a lot of work, but you’ll soon see what you gravitate toward. Once you find a variety or two you like, try that grape from a few different regions to see what you prefer the most. When you share this information with your sommelier at your next meal, let him or her know if you want to stick with what you know or whether you are up for a bit of adventure. Houston’s best sommeliers can always suggest safe choices that are much like what is familiar to you, or they can help you jump off and try something new without going too far from your favorite flavors. So, what kind of wine do you like?

2015 CHEVROLET COLORADO T
he Chevrolet Colorado is back! This is indeed great news and a reason to celebrate. After an absence of three model years, General Motors has brought back this mid-size pickup truck for buyers who don’t need or want a full-size pickup. They did such a good job that the new Colorado just won the highly prized Motor Trend 2015 Truck of the Year award, beating out the all-new aluminum body 2015 Ford F-150. This new, smaller Chevy truck is awesome. There was a time when the only people who drove pickup trucks were construction workers, ranchers and Texans. Back in the big 1990s, Americans across this land ours discovered that pickups were mighty fun to drive, and so all of the big automakers had both a large, highly capable, full-size truck, as well as a smaller but much
less capable mid-size truck in their lineup. However, when gas hit four dollars a gallon back a decade ago, casual truck buyers abandoned their pickups, and mid-size pickups lost their appeal and their market share. So, Chevrolet went back to the drawing board and came back with the new Colorado, their midsize entry, and it’s a beaut. The new Colorado comes in two body styles, extended cab and crew cab with a more streamlined design than its big brother, the full-size Chevy Silverado, with the hope of attracting buyers more interested in driving to the Galleria than construction sites. That said, this new truck is still highly capable for its size. Like the Silverado, the Colorado has a fullyboxed perimeter frame, engineered for strength and for a smoother, quieter ride. And, coupled with the available V-6 engine and heavy-duty towing package, the new Colorado delivers a 7,000 pound trailering rating, the highest in its segment. Two new engines are offered, both

mated to a six-speed transmission. The base two wheel drive model, with an MSRP of $20,120, has a 200 hp, 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine that will get EPA estimated fuel economy numbers of 20 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. If you need the extra horsepower, the 305 hp, V6 engine is available with only a minor drop in fuel economy: 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. If you like having the utility of a pickup but don’t need the size and capability of a full-size truck, then the mid-size 2015 Chevrolet Colorado has to be at the top of your list. Living the Sweet Life: Give Yourself Three Gifts This January
A
fter giving to others all season, I’ll bet most of you are looking at the same thing I am looking at: a house full of new “stuff” trying to find their space in your home. Each year, I try to disguise this clutter by just removing the holiday decorations. It always seems to work as a stalling tactic as I gather into boxes the decorations, and by removing those, I am at least somehow convinced that the new “stuff” will find their home. This can only last for so long, I tell myself. This past fall, telling myself that came to a head when it seemed that behind every closet door was a set of scary shelves packed to the brim just waiting to spill out. My assistant started “working” on the office when we decided to do a shift in who worked where. By moving the digital department upstairs, we opened up a can of worms downstairs in my office. It took several weeks to get organized with other more important tasks taking the hot seat. We got through it, of course, just in time to create more “stuff” with holiday garlands and lights and such.
TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend
As I began planning for this year and making all those promises to myself about organizing, I decided to take some sound advice from Martha Beck. She mentioned in her column in Oprah in December tips about giving. I was actually on a plane reading the magazine after having spent some considerable time organizing at my in-laws’ home. It is amazing how much “stuff” we accumulate over years. Ellen’s house was decked out for the holidays, and we talked about the fact that once you throw out something, invariably you find yourself needing it, and so, there’s the case for not doing any throwing away at all! I liked the ideas that Martha had in her column. One was that each time you give a present, you should also gift one to yourself. I liked that concept for obvious reasons! She had asked her readers about what gifts they would give to themselves, and their answers really were not things at all but rather three intangibles such as more time, stufflessness and acceptance. I decided to adopt all three for myself in 2015. Martha mentioned “Enough with the stuff!” and her way of finally ridding ourselves of it made me feel comfortable with actually letting things go. She said we should get several boxes and several times each day try to look around and see if there’s anything that is not needed. Stick those things in the box. Once full, stick the boxes in the garage or in my case, the attic. Let a year, or in my case two, go by with those things tucked away. If you need them, go get them – no worries! If by the end of a specified time you did not need them, then take them to Goodwill or a local shelter, and let them go. This also means placing in the box magazines that have not been read, clothes that have not been worn, etc. This is going to be really tough, I know! I started with putting into boxes all of the holiday decorations that we did not use this year. I am also going to take this a step further with making boxes for the children. Clothes and dolls that I think they might want for my unborn grandchildren might sound crazy, but I don’t want to throw away stuff that they may need at a different time in their lives. Those Star Wars figurines that were Brian’s have been treasures with James Edward, and now that he no longer plays with them, they have to find a new home waiting for the next generation to discover them!
Take Care of YOU!
