EXCLAMATION POINTS! THE INSIDE SCOOP STRAIGHT FROM THE TOP
Vol. 10 No. 8 June 2014
Editor-in-Chief, PATTI PARISH-KAMINSKI With the cold snap in May, we thought it might never arrive, but summer is finally here! While I don’t always appreciate our Texas summers, I do appreciate the more laid back pace of the summer at my house – if only for a while. While we enjoy a respite from our hectic schedule, for many families, June is an incredibly busy month because of a long-standing tradition: weddings. In this special wedding issue, Fort Bend brides have shared their special day with us, and Lisa Fredrickson, Chef Kory Clemens and these blushing brides are gorgeous! While Patti Parish Kaminski. my goal is to not assist with planning a wedding for at least 10 years for my baby girl, I confess that I have saved some pages of some great ideas for the future – the far away future, many, many years from now. In June, we also celebrate our dads and grads. If you need a special gift to celebrate, we have some great ideas on page 72 with our Things We Love for Dads and Grads. In this issue, we also bring you a wonderful program that is making a difference in the lives of at-risk youth males. Fort Bend County Partnership for Youth’s Male Mentoring Program is a county-funded initiative led by two amazing men. You’ll meet Quacho Allison and Jeramie Parker as they share their passion for helping young men. We also bring our readers a new feature this month: Family Night at the Movies. These insightful reviews by Chris Hill answer the questions moms and dads want to know about current releases and help determine which movies are really “family friendly.” Take a look at Chris’ review of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on page 64. Finally, I recently attended an event that so impressed me that I felt compelled to feature it in Fort Bend Focus. I, along with 700 guests, joined Dee Koch for the Annual Investment in Youth Luncheon. This amazing program, Youth In Philanthropy (YIP), is teaching the next generation of Fort Bend residents the importance of community and of giving back, while awarding $90,000 in scholarships to Fort Bend students. There are many ways to support YIP, and I encourage you to read about this shining star of success in our community on page 48. To all of our Fort Bend dads, we wish you a Happy Father’s Day, and to all of our Fort Bend grads, we congratulate you on your achievements. Absolutely! yours,

une is the month that reminds us of dads, and the important roles they play in the lives of their children. Unfortunately, for some of Fort Bend’s male youth, there’s no dad providing guidance, leadership and support at home. That’s where the Fort Bend County Partnership for Youth’s Male Mentoring Program comes in.

Male Mentoring: Making A Difference TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

In 1996, counsel specializing in work with juveniles spoke in open court stating a need for help with kids who are not hardened criminals but had challenges in their homes. The question counsel posed was simple: How do these at-risk kids get the support they need to become productive, successful adults? That question led to a group of concerned public officials developing a community-based program that would focus on this need. As a result, the Fort Bend Partnership for Youth, Inc. was created in late 1996. In October 2004, paid staff members were appointed to the Juvenile Probation Department to specifically work on a variety of programs in this initiative including the Male Mentoring Program. Initially funded by a grant from the state, the Fort Bend Partnership for Youth programs are now completely funded by Fort Bend County.
Focusing on At-Risk Youth The Male Mentoring Program focuses on providing young men within the Texas Juvenile Justice Probation Department interaction with positive adult male role models. These young men typically do not have a father figure
in the home, have committed crimes that are non-violent, non-sexual type offenses and are deemed at risk of further delinquency. Mary Gready, Special Programs Coordinator, explained, “The program was designed to have paid staff with community volunteers joining in. Within a group setting, volunteers get to know the boys in a non-forced way. When the young men finish the program, they are matched with an adult male mentor for one-on-one aftercare.”
A Commitment to Service Services to juveniles commenced in February of 2008 and are currently led by two paid staff members, Jeramie Parker and Quacho Allison. Prior to joining the program, both men held positions in the Justice System as Detention Officers. These dedicated men have families of their own but requested this responsibility and were transferred internally to the Male Mentoring Program. “I wanted to give back to the community,” said Parker. “I began my volunteer service when I was 19 with the Big Brothers and Big Sisters Program working with at-risk kids. After I returned from active duty military service, I knew that I wanted to continue this type of community involvement. This program is my life.” Allison agrees with his co-worker. “I look at these kids and realize I could have been in the same situation. This experience has made me realize how lucky I am. I value the relationship I have with my own children even more. This position is never just a job.” With the leadership and guidance of Parker and Allison, the Male Mentoring Program offers these young men many gifts. They are taught life skills including household skills, budgeting and etiquette. They participate in group recreation
Jeramie Parker and Bandit.
activities such as basketball, football, softball and fishing. The participants of the program also receive instruction on future life requirements such as obtaining a job. They practice participating in mock interviews, completing employment applications and how to conduct themselves when meeting with potential employers. The facilities of the Fort Bend Public Library are utilized as well as more relaxed atmospheres for discussions and instruction.
Consistent, Comprehensive, Caring The Male Mentoring Program is made available to these at-risk children and parents 24 hours a day. According to Parker, “We are there to answer that cry or solve a problem whenever they need us. We can intervene before problems progress.” The program consists of a three day per week schedule. The first two days are group sessions with participation from all of the young men, and the third day is more individualized attention focusing on educational needs. The staff members attend meetings at school to address any problems or special tutorial requirements that may need attention.
Becoming Involved Currently, the Male Mentoring Program needs adult male volunteers over the age of 21 to assist in the mentoring process. Volunteers can commit as much or as little time as they choose, and the reward of helping mold these young men into productive citizens is beyond compare. If you are an adult male over the age of 21 and would like to volunteer, contact Mary Gready, Special Programs Coordinator, at 281-633-7317. For additional information, visit fbpfy.org.
Quacho Allison says that equine-based activities are beneficial to the program.

Storm Flags Flying – Revisited
H
ere on the Gulf Coast we begin preparing for hurricane season every May. It’s not something we look forward to. We’d rather be planning our summer vacation to the beach or a Caribbean island. But it’s what you do to prepare. Investing is much of the same. An old adage on Wall Street is “Sell in May and Go Away.” This saying came about decades ago as traders in New York City would sell their positions in anticipation of spending the summer in the cooler environs of The Hamptons. This was well before electronic trading and cell phones. However, there is a great deal of truth that still guides human nature today. There are documented seasonal tendencies such as the best six months and the worst six months of the year. According to the Stock Trader’s Almanac, May through October has historically been the worst six-month period of each year. If you had invested $10,000 in the Dow Jones Industrial Average on May 1st and sold October 31st of every year since 1950, you would have lost money over the past 64 years. The above example is not an investment recommendation. However, a wise investor, just like a wise vacationer, plans for a hurricane this time of year, even as they go about their everyday business.
2013 produced double-digit returns for the year. The only hiccup was in May and June when the S&P 500 declined approximately 7% on fears of rising interest rates. Even in good markets there can be turbulent times. Don’t despair, just prepare. The average American cannot afford to retire on just their savings. They must invest to accumulate wealth. Our goal is to help you prepare for your future even as the “storm flags are flying.” If you’d like to learn more about the “good” period of investing, how we help manage “hurricane season” or strategies designed to accumulate and maintain wealth, contact us at www.hardeeinvestmentgroup.com. Make
Summer Sensational
Fun, kid-friendly activities for the whole family
C
elebrate unlimited sunshine and bask in those carefree summer days with kid-friendly activities that bring the family together.
For many parents, it’s the same routine each and every year. After weeks of anticipation for the end of the school year, those lazy summer days finally arrive for your children. But soon after, the newness wears off, leaving behind sad faces and the dreaded phrase heard by parents across the country, “I’m bored.” But all it takes to battle summer boredom is a little preparedness and a few clever ideas to make this summer the best one yet. The summer fun experts at Bomb Pop serve up these awesome, fresh ideas to bring loads of memorable moments to your family all season long.
Go on a Park Crawl Research all of the parks in your town and visit each one. Your kids will love pointing out their favorite attractions at each location. When the activity is over, have each child pick their favorite park so you can visit regularly. Be sure to load up on sunscreen, drinking water and bug spray. Also, make sure you have a map or smartphone handy to help you navigate to the next park. Make it memorable by taking a picture at each stop. Those treasured moments can be printed and pieced together into a summer scrapbook they’ll cherish for years.
Create a Family Masterpiece
Make a Splash Backyard water games are synonymous with smiles. Enjoy the classic warm weather activities of water balloon fights, squirt gun wars, playing on a slip and slide and, as always, swimming in an outdoor pool. Younger kids will love ice excavating, too. Simply freeze plastic toys in a large bowl and let them chip away at the ice. Be sure to have everyone wearing swimsuits and plenty of sunscreen. Backyard fun also means your freezer is just a few steps away, so stock it with cool treats, such as the six fins of fun in Bomb Pops frozen treats. Make it memorable by making a game of your water activities. Whether it’s a water balloon toss or squirt gun tag, kids will be more involved when you throw in some friendly competition. Be sure to have a lot of summer-themed prizes, such as cool beach towels, sunglasses or splash balls.
Score a Home Run A visit to the local baseball field is a wonderful way to teach your little ones about America’s favorite pastime, while also encouraging an active lifestyle. Invite their buddies along so you can have a whole team, or just practice catching, pitching or batting with a couple of players. Be sure to bring plenty of sunscreen, drinking water, hats, baseball gear and a

cooler packed with delicious treats. Make it memorable by creating your own cheer section. Some kids may be too young to play, but they can still participate as cheerleaders for their brothers or sisters. Make sure your squad is complete with handmade cheer signs and pompoms for them to wave about proudly.
20
Get crafty with the kids and let them create their own giant mural — on a bed sheet. Simply lay an old one out on the lawn and let the kids paint away. They will love to proudly hang up their creation in the basement rec room or any other place where they play.
Be sure to supply kid-safe paints, brushes, sponges and other items around the home for tracing shapes and designs. Also, make sure everyone lathers on plenty of sunscreen so they don’t get burned while making their art. Make it memorable and encourage your kids to tell a summer story through their artwork. Allow them to draw inspiration from a recent trip to the lake, the mountains or a family reunion. With a few kid-friendly ideas, you can create memories that will last a lifetime. atrick Winsey and I, Jemila Williams, met over 10 years ago at work, and we were at very different points in our lives. Let’s just say it was not love at first sight! As colleagues at work, we rarely saw eye-to-eye on most work-related things. If Pat saw blue, I saw red. Coworkers used to ask us to lunch just to listen to us argue as part of their daily entertainment. They said we argued like brother and sister. As the years went by, life and work separated us, only to bring us back together in Houston. This time, the chemistry and connection between us was undeniable. We soon began to date and realized that we were destined for each other, as we had been connected in many ways even before we met. After a few years together, Pat proposed in true romantic fashion by getting down on one knee in the rain. Being from West Africa, I never thought I would find my Prince Charming halfway around the world. Patrick is from Houston, and we honored my family by also celebrating a traditional wedding in Nigeria. We were married March 30, 2013 at Briscoe Manor in Richmond. The wine-inspired themed wedding featured several custom details, including my shoes embellished in over 2,500 Swarovski crystals as my “something blue,” handmade floral arrangements and décor. The guests were sent home with private label wines from our personal collection. Our love for each other has grown and matured over the years. Not only do we have a friendship and bond stronger than we could ever imagine, our sons share that same bond and are inseparable. We are best friends, partners in life, love, business and 150 percent better together. Photography by RH Photo Arts.

Cowboys and Culture I
grew up in Fort Worth and have loved being able to take my husband and kids back to visit. If you have a free long weekend this summer, head north and enjoy the City of Cowboys and Culture.
A tarantula from the Fort Worth Zoo Gigantabugs! exhibit.

For folks with kids, your first stop must be the Fort Worth Zoo. Ranked as a top five zoo in the nation, it showcases natural habitat exhibits that replicate animals’ homes in the wild. The popular Texas Wild! exhibit features 200 native animals and a replica of an 1890s Texas town. If you travel before July 6th, you can catch the temporary exhibit Gigantabugs! featuring 13 largerthan-life, animatronic bugs scattered throughout the zoo.
“The size of these mechanical creatures gives an opportunity to highlight their unique features and value to the ecosystem in a memorable way,” said zoo Executive Director Michael Fourak-
er. Who wouldn’t want to encounter a seven-spotted lady beetle or a Madagascan sunset moth up to 709 times larger than real life? Tourists young and old will get a huge kick out of the Stockyards National Historic District. You can catch the Fort Worth Herd, the world’s only daily cattle drive, as it heads down Exchange Avenue. After that, take a ride on the authentically restored Grapevine Vintage Railroad all the way to Stockyards Station, the former hog and sheep pens turned into a shopping and dining marketplace. Complete your Old West experience with rodeo action and Wild West shows taking place year round at the Cowtown Coliseum. My children have always enjoyed the outstanding exhibits at the Kimbell Art Museum. This summer’s exhibition of ancient Japanese armor is sure to impress. Among the works featured will be 18 full suits of armor and three life-size horses clad in armor. “This stunning display of exquisitely

ornate and wonderfully forbidding armor recreates the world of the samurai and brings the viewer face-to-face with the legendary warriors,” said Eric M. Lee, director of the Kimbell Art Museum. Those over 21 can mosey on over to the world’s largest honky-tonk, Billy Bob’s Texas, to enjoy live music and even some live bull riding. If you are looking for something a tad smaller, the White Elephant Saloon is a real Western watering hole offering country western music nightly. Those looking for something fastpaced can race over to the Texas Motor Speedway, which hosts NASCAR and IRL IndyCar races throughout the year. As of April 2014, all of the racing will be up close and personal with the addition of the world’s largest high-definition video board nicknamed “Big Hoss.” For a broad array of entertainment and dining options, check out Sundance Square in downtown Fort Worth. From the Bass Performance Hall to art galleries to shops, there is something for everyone in this 35 block area that has been fully restored to its original Victorian beauty. Although there is never enough time for everything on the list, my family also likes the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, the Fort Worth Botanic Garden and the National Cowgirl Museum. Fort Worth fun is calling, so y’all better saddle up and get going!

A
lmost 725 people filled the banquet room at Safari Texas on April 9th at the Annual Investment in Youth Luncheon, where not a dry eye was in sight. When The Excellence in Community Service Award Recipient, Makayla Mueller, of Dulles High School, read her winning essay, you could have heard a fork drop. “There was a room full of support for these students, and they could feel it,” said Dee Koch, Youth In Philanthropy (YIP) Coordinating Committee Member and Grant Officer of The George Foundation. Youth In Philanthropy collected over $90,000 in scholarship money this year and announced the recipients at the luncheon. The students receiving the scholarships were from Calvary Episcopal College Prep, Fort Bend ISD, Lamar Consolidated ISD, Needville ISD and Stafford Municipal School District. This is up from last year’s scholarship fund of $46,000. The YIP Program has been in existence for 17 years, and each year cultivates student leadership allowing students to

develop and test different skill sets while making a difference in their community. YIP is comprised of Fort Bend County junior and senior high school students. It provides them the opportunity to experience how volunteerism and philanthropy coexist to serve their community. The selected students are part of a journey to strengthen their connections with their community and each other. The YIP Team participates in site visits and volunteer projects with area nonprofit organizations to increase their knowledge of the Fort Bend County nonprofit sector. The YIP students also meet and hear from some of Fort Bend County’s most inspiring leaders from business, the nonprofit sector and the community-at-large. “At the conclusion of the school year, with their new knowledge and understanding of the community and the many organizations providing services to its residents, the YIP Team evaluates local charities and puts philanthropy into action by awarding monetary grants to participating nonprofits,” said Koch. The students met one Saturday each month from 9 am to 3 pm for six consecutive months, including an orientation and an evaluation meeting. In her speech, Koch thanked the nonprofit organizations, the district liaisons, community volunteers and all of the supporters who assisted in YIP’s success. She also recognized the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce CEO Keri Schmidt for her forward thinking leadership role and thanked her team for the organization of all the sessions. “We are very proud to partner with the George Foundation in presenting the YIP Program. Working with the YIP students, we are able to shape the future of philanthropy in Fort Bend County,” said Schmidt. This past year, there were 391 applications for YIP of which 165 students were selected from 20 high school campuses in Fort Bend. Together, the students provided a total of 7,680 vol.com • June 2014

unteer hours. Each YIP Team member worked hand in hand alongside community volunteers completing volunteer projects submitted by Fort Bend’s nonprofit sector. It is a well-known fact that nonprofits are the heart of YIP. The quality resources that the nonprofit sector offer is seen as one of the merits to Fort Bend county. “The response from the community has been overwhelming for YIP,” stated Schmidt. “We are proud to say that 67 scholarships are being distributed to students this year.” Congratulations to all of the students and supporters who were part of this heartfelt initiative in assisting the community-at-large. Investing in the lives of students today builds a better future for all of those who will be a part of tomorrow. The MOMS Club of Greatwood-East chapter is elated to announce its extremely successful, first annual MOMS Bunco Night Out. Each year, the MOMS Club selects a local charity to support. On April 28th, approximately 100 people joined together at Russo’s New York Pizzeria in Greatwood to raise money for Lunches of Love. Lunches of Love is an organization committed to helping end childhood hunger by providing free nutritious sack lunches in the Richmond-Rosenberg area. The sold out evening was generously sponsored by AmPro Construction Services, Texas Direct Insurance Agency, Smiles on Greatwood Dentistry, Moonwalks-N-More and Kara Triolo with Plexus. The MOMS Club worked tirelessly to secure donations from businesses around town to help this night be successful. Guests dined on delicious food, played Bunco and bid on items in a dollar, five dollar and silent auction. Ultimately, the MOMS Club of Greatwood-East raised $4,679 or 6,238 lunches for the children who are served by Lunches of Love. The MOMS Club is eternally grateful for all of the participants in the evening, sponsors, donors and volunteers. These wonderful donors’ generosity has helped make a difference in a child’s life living in our community.

absolutely! HEALTHY LIVING
Bacteria and Cancer: Feeding Your Microbiome
H
ow does what people eat affect their chances of getting cancer? Some new answers may be hidden in the millions of bacteria that live in one’s gut. These bacteria make up the gut microbiome – the largest collection of bacteria in the body. It starts forming when people are born, then grows and changes as they age over time. Diet sustains these bacteria. In turn, the bacteria help digest food and absorb essential vitamins and nutrients. Carrie Daniel-MacDougall, Ph.D., M.P.H., is a nutritional epidemiologist at MD Anderson. She will soon begin
studies to learn more about how a person’s diet and microbiome jointly contribute to the risk of obesity and cancer.
Microbiome Research Uncovers Clues “Having a healthy mix of gut bacteria may lower a person’s risk of obesity or weight gain,” Daniel-MacDougall said. “Obesity is a known risk factor for many cancers, including colorectal cancer.” Gut bacteria play a vital role in how much energy or calories the body extracts from food. They also help decide how many calories to store as fat. “A lot of unknowns exist about which bacteria make up an ideal microbiome and which are truly harmful,” DanielMacDougall said. “But, we are learning that a diverse community of gut bacteria is beneficial to a person’s health.”
Keep a Healthy Diet Rich in Plant Foods “A diet that includes a variety of plant foods seems to fill your body with a healthy balance of bacteria,” DanielMacDougall said. Plant foods, like fruits, beans and vegetables, also tend to be rich in fiber. And, fiber helps nurture a robust community of gut bacteria. Eating a variety of fiber-rich plant foods can also help reduce risks for many cancers, including colorectal cancer.
Include Healthy Prebiotic and Probiotic Foods Eating prebiotic and probiotic foods may introduce new bacteria in the body. It also can change existing bacteria to ensure a healthy mix. Prebiotic foods feed the bacteria already living in the gut. They include asparagus, bananas, oatmeal and beans or legumes. Probiotic foods contain live bacteria. It is considered “good” bacteria because it helps prevent the growth of harmful bacteria in the gut. Yogurt with live or active cultures is a probiotic food.
Stick with a Stable Diet “It’s your long-term choices that matter most when it comes to a healthy microbiome and lowering your cancer risk,” said Daniel-MacDougall. “So, the first step is to choose a healthy diet that satisfies you. Then, you’ll be more likely to stick with it over time.” Visit www.mdanderson.org/focused for additional tips on health and exercise.

as a section leader as a junior, and both boys were members of the band all four years of high school. In October of 2013, the Goodwin brothers also earned the coveted Eagle Scout award from Troop 361. Both Alex and Bryce are outgoing and are always looking for something to challenge them physically as well as mentally. Alex is the older of the twins, although when they were young and at school together, Bryce always spoke for Alex. Once they were separated, Alex did his own speaking. The boys are very competitive, challenging each other to be the best in sports, academics and every day challenges and are the best of friends. In addition to sports and music, Alex and Bryce attended Exxon Mobil Bernard Harris summer camp for Engineering and Science at Prairie View A&M University. Alex is a member of the National Science Honor Society, and Bryce is a member of the National Honor Society and a DECA state finalist. They maintain their academic excellence while holding down jobs at a local restaurant and a tutoring company.

Out of approximately 800 students at Stafford High School, Alex ranks in the top 14 percent and Bryce in the top 9 percent. Alex received the Presidential Scholarship to Prairie View A&M University and the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Suburban Houston Fort Bend Alumnae Chapter Scholarship. He plans to major in Political Science with a career as a political/sports analyst. Bryce received the Academic Excellence Scholarship at the University of Houston and the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO) Houston Chapter Scholarship to study accounting before heading to law school. Both brothers look forward to the college experience and continuing their education, but they pledge to always make their way back home to spend time with mom and dad. They all agree that the family unit is the most important aspect of life.

ward-winning schools help make Fort Bend the “it” place to live, and Stafford High School is home to a very special set of senior twins who are award-winning: Alexander and Bryce Goodwin. Alex and Bryce are the fraternal twins of Gwendolyn and Ronald Goodwin. In their 13 years of school, they grew up in the Stafford School system engaging in both athletic and academic achievements. In elementary school, they both played soccer, and middle school introduced them to basketball and football. At Stafford High School, football was their sport of choice as both boys played all four years. The brothers both love sports and are known for memorizing stats and bringing sports clips to school. Alex and Bryce are not just “jocks;” they are creative and intelligent individuals. Throughout their entire career, these brothers were part of the gifted and talented program excelling in all major subjects. Artistically, they are musicians. Alex has played the trumpet since sixth grade, and Bryce the trombone. They were a part of the marching band at Stafford, and it was not unusual to see these two march with the band in their football uniform at halftime. Bryce was selected
Gwen and Ronald are so proud of Alex and Bryce, what they have accomplished and how they have grown as individuals. The Goodwin’s look forward to what the future has in store for them. Congratulations and good luck as these two brothers in excellence begin the next chapter of their lives!

Texana Center received a $10,000 donation from the Exchange Club of Sugar Land President, Judge Robert Kern. Kate Johnson-Patagoc, Director of Specialized Children’s Services at Texana Center, was invited to attend the Sugar Land Exchange Club’s breakfast meeting to talk about Texana’s autism program where she was presented a $10,000 check for the organization. The club’s donation will be used to provide equipment and supplies for a classroom at the Children’s Center for Autism at Sugar Land, which is currently under construction and due to open this summer. Kate Johnson-Patagoc commented, “This gift could not have come at a more crucial time, as the number of children with an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis continues to rise. According to the Center for Disease Control, 1 in 68 children in the U.S. have this diagnosis. Now more than ever, we need to expand Texana’s autism programs so that we can accommodate more children.” Texana Center was able to take advantage of the Texas Healthcare Transformation and Quality Improvement Program 1115 Medicaid Waiver and apply for funding to renovate and operate an existing building in Sugar Land. However, the funding received did not cover the costs associated with classroom equipment and supplies, so this donation came at the perfect time. The Exchange Club of Sugar Land has been serving the community and improving the quality of life through donations to various non-profit organizations in Fort Bend County for many years. Every year they hold their Annual Spaghetti Dinner to raise funds through ticket sales, raffles, live and silent auctions and sponsorships.

Plan now to golf “fore” education in the Fort Bend Education Foundation’s 15th annual Back to School Scramble golf tournament scheduled for Monday, August 25th at Sweetwater Country Club. Schlumberger is presenting the Back to School Scramble chaired by Claude Leatherwood. Lunch is provided by Chickfil-A, and the entry fee includes lunch, golf and cart, beverages, dinner reception and special gifts. Sponsorship opportunities are available along with foursome teams for $1,000 and individual entries for $275. The Education Foundation touches every school in Fort Bend ISD. Since its inception, the Education Foundation has awarded over $4 million through its grants to teachers and schools. These grants enable teachers to provide innovative classroom projects for which tax dollars are not available, and they help new teachers with zero years of teaching experience to outfit their new classrooms. Participation in the annual Back to School Scramble helps make the Fort Bend Education Foundation’s mission a reality: to enrich and enhance the quality of education for all Fort Bend ISD students. All proceeds from the Back to School Scramble benefit the Fort Bend Education Foundation. For information about the Back to School Scramble and sponsorship opportunities, contact Carol Evans at 281-6341111 or carol.evans@fortbendisd.com.

or over fifty years, fans have marveled over the evolution of puny Peter Parker to the masked super hero Spider-Man. In each portrayal, he is an everyman living in the extraordinary world of the extreme. In the second installment of the rebooted film franchise, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, we find Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) enjoying life as a super hero and as a young adult with his love interest Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone).
Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone star in Columbia Pictures’ The Amazing Spider-Man. Photo by Niko Tavernise.
As is always prevalent in any SpiderMan story, his great power is coupled with great responsibility. The protection of New York City and the people he loves are consistently imperiled by other powered individuals. In this installment, we find Electro (Jamie Foxx) and an unnamed green villain (no spoilers here) who apparently must exist in any movie named Spider-Man, squaring off against our hero. Rhino (Paul Giamatti) appears briefly at the beginning and ending of the film. The recently released Captain America film upped the stakes on super hero movies. It’s not just popcorn fare with brain-splitting special effects anymore. Now, story and characters matter just as much as explosions and capes. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 brings the explosions and action to an almost extreme level. The action sequences with Electro are some of the best seen on film. The villainous motivations, however, seem rushed and incomplete, two dimensional in form. On a more positive note, Andrew Garfield becomes Spider-Man with this film. With quips, spontaneity and fun, Garfield behaves the way a boy bitten by a radioactive spider should behave – something that was seriously lacking in the four previous attempts. The chemistry between Parker and Stacy shows through the screen and builds to an emotional climax. Adding to the drama, the Parker family backstory is unique and intriguing. The film needs to be enjoyed in the theater, as the 3D is extraordinary. You soar with Spider-Man feeling every web along the way. You feel as if you are riding shotgun with him as he swings between buildings. The special effects pro-

vide truly amazing moments. You can quibble with character motivation and the fact that Spider-Man’s greatest foil, J. Jonah Jameson, is still absent, but if you liked the first one, this one will hit home for you. If you also enjoyed Captain America and wanted another deep story with strong villainous motivation, you are really going to enjoy the special effects.

This review is designed to be more than just a take on the film. It is also a look at the film’s appropriateness for families. There seems to be wide latitude on PG-13, so this reviewer looks at things that may influence your decision to go to the film and who to take. Violence: Yes, lots of it. Cartoon-based violence and the occasional Spider-Man wise crack keeps things light, but there is maximum carnage in this one. There is, however, an emotionally packed scene and a villain origin that could be troubling for younger viewers. Language: No foul language. Sexuality: No nudity. Romantic suggestions but nothing objectionable. Now Showing: In Local Theatres MPAA Rating: PG-13

absolutely! AUTO REVIEW By Steve Kursar
2014 ACURA MDX The 2014 Acura MDX has been completely redesigned for a quieter ride and much better fuel economy. One of the most popular models in the highly competitive luxury midsize SUV segment, Acura had to up its game to stay in the race. The exterior styling changed in a subtle way, but the real transformation occurred under the hood and in the interior. And that’s where the car buyer will notice the big difference in how this new MDX drives. The Acura MDX has been a perennial favorite within the mid-size SUV segment since it appeared on American highways almost 15 years ago. Sporting three rows, this luxury SUV had the added advantage of giving moms (and dads) a sportier alternative
to the minivan. The one complaint that Acura heard over the years regarding the MDX was how much of a fuel hog the vehicle was. So, they finally decided to address that issue in the 2014 model in a typically clever Acura way: they made more out of less. This year’s MDX actually has a smaller engine that acts like a bigger engine than last year’s model. The new powertrain is a 290 hp, 3.5 liter direct gas injected V6 that has more low-end torque than the previous 300 hp, 3.7 liter V6. Combined with a lighter body, the new engine delivers both better performance and better fuel economy. For the record, the 2014 MDX is faster from zero to 60 than the previous model, and fuel economy numbers are way better with 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. I guess less really is more. It has to be noted that the Acura’s SuperHandling AWD technology has been joined by a front wheel drive system that’s not nearly as much fun to drive. But in

the quest for gas savings, the constant SH-AWD system had to be supplemented with a lighter system for better fuel economy. In keeping the MDX competitive with its rivals, Acura upped the quality of the interior materials and added more technology to keep the driver connected with hands-free technology. The second row of seats slide forward to allow for added third row legroom, although it’s still pretty tight back there. If that third row is vital and a minivan will never grace your driveway, the 2014 Acura MDX, with a starting MSRP of $42,290, has to be on your shopping list. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital ICU Receives Beacon Award for Excellence The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) recently recognized the ICU department at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital with a silver-level Beacon Award for Excellence. The Beacon Award for Excellence — a significant milestone on the path to exceptional patient care and healthy work environments — recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with AACN’s six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Units that achieve this three-year, three-level award with a gold, silver or bronze designation meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award. Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is the first Houston Methodist community hospital and one of 16 hospitals in Texas to earn this recognition. AACN President Vicki Good, RN, MSN, CENP, applauds the commitment of the ICU caregivers at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital for working together to meet and exceed the high standards set forth by the Beacon Award for Excellence. These dedicated health care professionals join other members of the exceptional community of nurses who set the standard for optimal patient care. “The Beacon Award for Excellence recognizes caregivers in stellar units whose consistent and systematic approach to evidence-based care optimizes patient outcomes. Units that receive this national recognition serve as role models to others on their journey to excellent patient and family care,” Good explained. Living the Sweet Life
Lost and Found: Finding Father’s Day Treasures in Nana’s Pocketbook
A
few days ago, I was digging around in my closet, and for some reason, I glanced up and saw my Nana’s black pocketbook. I grabbed it and opened it up knowing there would be something inside. Nana used to always keep things in her purses and drawers, and I remember as a child enjoying “plundering” as she called it. You never knew what you’d find. Sometimes it was an old penny and a Kleenex and other times a pair of glasses or a small mirror and lipstick. When I opened up her black bag, I saw a cluster of papers mixed with photos and letters. I carefully opened one letter and discovered it was from my grandfather written to Nana while she was in the hospital. As I finished the letter, I saw where there was another letter inside with a description of what my grandfather had translated for Nana from scribbles that my very own daddy had made! On Father’s Day, it is hard not to look back at the men who are a part of our lives. Men who become fathers do so for many reasons. For some, the role is natural, while for others, it may be harder to accomplish. Certainly I think we can all agree it takes a special man to be a good daddy and a good spouse. Grandaddy died before I was born, and Nana came to live with Mommy and Daddy right before I was born. Nana always spoke so well of my grandfather. He was a plumber, a farmer and a gentle man. As you might imagine, my only real connection to him was from Nana and the stories that she passed to us through the years. One story was how Grandaddy played in a band and all the ladies wanted to “borrow” him, to which Nana replied, “My Walter Jennings was not for borrowing!” She often spoke of them keeping the farm out of debt and how hard they had worked, one story I had forgotten about until I read the letter. Grandaddy and Nana always wanted children, and it took them years to have my Daddy. Nana spoke of another baby named Patricia that she had carried and that had died. She never really elaborated on the details but to say that she had always wanted to name her Patricia. This letter was written by my grandfather to her while she was in the hospital recovering from having lost that child, and he had the thoughtfulness TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

What must have been a very traumatic time in their lives, now with all of them passed, I was now finding in a letter left in her pocketbook. He wrote of how much he missed her and how guilty he felt for having put her there. This was so sweet it nearly broke my heart. I never knew anything about him, and this love letter said it all. Their story was a true love story. It also made perfect sense to me why Nana never remarried. She spent 39 years living without him after his death in 1965 until her own in 2004. She also wore a small golden band every day that was inscribed 12-23-26 WJE to LMB. Finding the letter opened my eyes to several things. One, Nana kept the letter and stuck it in a safe place for me to find years later. The letter meant something to her and was a permanent reminder for her of Grandaddy’s love for her and for their son, and even for the child they had lost. There was no way I could have comprehended the magnitude of pain she felt while she was alive, but having also lost two babies and finding this love note, it made me feel closer to her than before. I also came to realize what an amazing man my grandfather must have been. I caught a glimpse into the way he treated Nana and my Daddy, and it made me smile. Happy Father’s Day! Take care of YOU!
