How do you know it’s REALLY in there? The FDA allows manufacturers a +/- 20% error (There are several narrow therapeutic index exceptions). USP allows compounding pharmacies a +/- 10% error. We’ll let our potency testing speak for itself.

It is with a heavy heart that we prepare this issue of Fort Bend Focus for press. As many of you know, Mary Favre is one of us – part of our team at absolutely! focus media. Mary has served as a contributor over the years, and the loss of her dear husband and soulmate Carl is especially poignant amongst our team. Like so many in Fort Bend, Carl and Mary are members of our family. Their love and unwavering support of our community has made them ours. Carl was honored as one of our GEMS of Fort Bend – one of the three original Generous, Enthusiastic Men Serving. These words embodied the very soul of Carl Favre. He was just such a man, and on a personal note, Carl was one of the most amazing men I have ever Carl P. Favre met. He exemplified the very spirit 1950 - 2015 of what we intended a GEM to be. I’ll never forget meeting Carl and Mary for breakfast to share with them our mission of giving back to our community through our brand new initiative, GEMS. Carl loved the concept and was so supportive, that is until Lisa and I told him that he was selected as a GEM for our debut event. His response was simple: “No.” You see, this Godly man felt that so many others were more deserving of this honor than he. As we all know, nothing could have been further from the truth. When I interviewed Carl for GEMS, I asked him to share his philosophy of service. “A quote by Sir Winston Churchill says it all,” shared Carl. “We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give. I know Churchill’s words to be so true. As a person of faith, I do believe that we all have been blessed and are called to share our blessings with others.” Carl Favre was Fort Bend’s blessing – he was our blessing. He touched so many lives in our community with his quiet benevolence and giving spirit, and I, for one cannot imagine attending a community event and not seeing his smiling face. I told Mary when I learned that Carl left us that I knew why God wanted Carl with him in heaven. It was for the same reason we all wanted Carl here. It is simple: Carl was loved, admired, respected and needed that much, and now, Carl can continue sharing his generous heart, kind spirit and amazing grace from above. I always end this column by saying “stay focused.” Stay focused, indeed, on the people who are important in your life, the causes that have your heart and the blessings that have been bestowed upon you. And as Carl said, “Share your blessings with others.”

Positive Parenting 101:

Dealing with a Meltdown

I

t’s cliché, but raising children really is one of the hardest jobs, because it’s a job that is never finished. No matter how good of a job you do today, there will always be another situation tomorrow that requires parenting. When it comes to bad behavior, breaking rules and pushing boundaries are intrinsically part of a child’s emotional and psychological development. It’s our job as parents, therefore, to try and limit the opportunities for bad behavior and redirect our children to good behavior when they act out of line. But, that is much easier said than done. Your child makes a choice every second, and that choice is guided by a drive to get what he enjoys, wants or needs. Proactive, positive discipline is a method that gives children the tools and opportunity to choose good ways to communicate and attain their needs and wants and limit the bad ways to do so. For example, this past week, my two-year-old son said to me, “Dada, ball.” So, I bent down, grabbed the ball by my feet and proceeded to roll the ball back toward him. He proceeded to have a minor meltdown. I realized in that moment that the want he had in his head was not being communicated well by him or understood well

TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.fortbend

by me. I thought he wanted me to roll the ball back to him. In his mind, he wanted me to take the ball and hide it under my shirt. Silly daddy, how could I not have guessed that from “Dada, ball?” If I had punished him for his freak-out over Ballpocalypse 2015, it’s important to realize that he would have associated the punishment with the wrong thing. Especially in toddlers, it is nearly impossible for them to associate punishment with actions. Rather, they associate punishment with their emotions. In this case, my son would probably have interpreted a punishment directed not towards his meltdown – the “how” he communicated – but rather with the sadness he felt when he didn’t get what he wanted – the “what” he was trying to communicate. The key here is acknowledging the emotion a child is feeling and letting him know that feeling isn’t bad. In the example of my son, I calmly told him that I could tell he was frustrated because I hadn’t done what he wanted, and that’s okay. I told him I would love to play the way he wants me to, but I can’t understand what he wants when he tells me through crying and yelling. I then asked, “Do you want me to throw the ball instead?” I finally hit the jackpot and guessed that he wanted me to hide the ball in my shirt. I then told him how to properly ask that, got him to repeat after me, and the world was once again right in the Biron household. The hard part in all of this is controlling your own emotions as you try to teach your child how to control theirs. Like I mentioned, it’s easier said than done. Also, remember that your child can either be doing the right thing or the wrong thing at any given time. They can’t do both at once. So, if you put your child in situations that limit bad behavior and encourage good decisions, you are staying one step ahead of the game. You can’t put a cookie in front of a two-year-old and tell her not to eat it while you leave the room. She just doesn’t have high enough cognitive development to understand delayed gratification, and you’re setting her up for failure. Instead, give her two or three things she can do while Mommy goes potty, and then praise her for choosing one of those good things. Remember, praise the positive and neutralize the negative. All that said, tomorrow there will be another lesson, another meltdown. It might be for my son too – not just me. .com • June 2015

A Father’s Day Tribute to Fort Bend Dads

F

ather’s Day allows us to honor dads for all they do for their children, family and community. Fathers play many roles and wear many hats. There are those who work hard and sacrifice everything for their family. There are others who teach their children about the simple things in life, such as a love for nature. There are fathers who listen and give a helping hand, and there are also fathers who come late in children’s lives but make up for things they may have missed in the past. Through life’s many ups and downs, fathers have the ability to shield those they love while instilling confidence, perseverance and patience.

By Zeenat Kassam Mitha

This month, we feature 10 Fort Bend fathers who speak of their passion for some of the charities they love. These fathers balance work, family and giving to organizations that value their efforts, time and philanthropic nature. There are countless others like them in our community, and we are blessed by all of them, as fathers make a difference in the lives of so many!

“M

y involvement with Child Advocates of Fort Bend was prompted by my wife, Tracey, who told me to investigate the organization for a possible volunteer opportunity. Never did I believe that the investigation would so grab me with the realization that here in our backyard, there are so many neglected and abused children. Now, after more than 10 years as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) with three boys as court assignments, board membership, board presidency and Washington D.C. testimony, we still believe the Mission of Child Advocates of Fort Bend is so important. No one can, or should, know the children’s stories and not open their hearts and wallets.”

“I

got involved with Fort Bend Senior Meals on Wheels in 2000 when they were suggested by a good friend of mine, Karyn Dean. My career with seniors made it an easy choice, and it was natural for me to volunteer for something I loved. As a matter of fact, it is a privilege and an honor! Serving our seniors helps my sanity. I could be having a bad day, but after delivering a few meals, my day becomes joyful. It’s not what I’m doing for our seniors; it’s what they are doing for me – giving me a perspective of being blessed. We can deliver a meal and give them some of our time, but they have given us so much more.”

“O

ne of my greatest joys in life is being a father to my six beautiful children and a pastor, serving as a spiritual father as well. I believe in leading both my home and church family to serve. For this reason, I have led CrossingPoint to engage in meaningful partnerships that change lives. One such partnership is with Second Mile Mission. On the first Saturday of each month, CrossingPoint and Second Mile come together to distribute food to an average of 175 families. We are all here to not just gather resources but to become a resource to those in need. Second Mile is a Fort Bend County jewel, and it is our joy to partner with them each month in serving the communities that surround CrossingPoint Christian Church.”

“I

’ve been volunteering all my life for various charitable organizations, but one of the most enjoyable charitable organizations that I’ve volunteered with is The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ (HLSR). With more than 100 HLSR committees and over 32,000 volunteers, HLSR is able to support the youth of Texas by raising money for scholarships, which was nearly $13 million dollars for 2015 alone. This organization helps students to reach their college goals through scholarship opportunities. On a personal note, as an elementary student in the early 80s, I was able to submit my artwork to HLSR and win a blue ribbon, which helped me express and develop my artistic abilities and gain confidence as a young student.”

“R

eading has always played a great part in my education. I have a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature. It was a natural for me to understand and appreciate the need for a high literacy rate. From the proven socio-economic benefits to the necessary assimilation of other cultures into ours, reading comprehension is essential to a high quality of life in the world around us. Part of the mission of the Literacy Council is providing English as a Second Language (ESL) classes, bringing immigrants to our country the ability to understand the language. This is personal for me as well. My wife and her family are originally from Vietnam and came to this country with a very limited knowledge of English. ESL classes were vital to their success in America. My fondest memories are of teaching my children to read. It was one of the first activities that we could share, and it was always our special time together.”

“T

here are many charities I support, but a goal I have is to educate students, particularly in the accounting profession. My career in accounting has been very lucrative for me, and I stumbled upon the profession by accident. I spend most of my extra time volunteering with the Houston Certified Public Accountants (CPA) Society. I have served on the board in the past, and I am also a founding board member of Ascend Houston, a premier professional organization of Asian professionals. I donate to scholarships for accounting students to take CPA exams through Ascend and The Houston CPA society. I also recruit and mentor several students who are in the profession. I see immense value in education and mentoring.”

“I

am in the health care business, and when I worked at St. Luke’s, Texas Children’s Hospital and the Texas Heart Institute, I came across a lot of heart patients. My mom has high blood pressure and suffered a mild heart attack a few years ago. Knowing that a heart attack can be prevented through education, exercise and proper diet, I choose The American Heart Association (AHA) for supporting my passion and what it has been doing in these areas. I have served on the board of Fort Bend AHA for years, and we were able to raise a record amount of funds during my year as president, so research can continue to find more ways to combat this number one killer around the world. Knowing how to respond quickly during a heart attack can save a life.”

“I

t’s all about the kids, and that’s what makes me proud to be involved with Child Advocates of Fort Bend (CAFB). I have two grown children and a threeyear-old granddaughter, and I am very passionate about sustaining a voice for every child in need that comes to CAFB. With the growth of Fort Bend County comes growth of the number of children we have to serve, and we have such wonderful community support. I believe that every child served by CAFB will have a much brighter future.”

– Jim McClellan

– Sunil “Sunny” Sharma

“I “I

am blessed to be the father of twin 15 year-old girls and a 13 year-old son, as well as living my life’s passion as a doctor and owner of medical emergency room businesses. I believe in giving back to the community and serve on many boards. Though I am involved with various charities, my charity of choice is Texana Center. As a physician, I see how critical it is to facilitate and serve mental health programs, especially in light of limited governmental funding. Texana Center is focused on creating and delivering life-changing services to people needing behavioral, intellectual and developmental care, support and education. Texana’s goal is to unlock their potential for safe, independent and productive lives within local communities.”

am involved with The Exchange Club, because it is an organization that unites people of different faiths and cultural backgrounds. It promotes Americanism, community service, programs for youth and the prevention of child abuse. Santa’s Exchange is the project I enjoy the most, because we are able to provide gifts to children and families who would not be able to afford to buy them. In volunteering, I have discovered that giving back to my community is a need I have and one that I enjoy fulfilling every day. It has made me a better husband, father and grandfather.”

Dad’s Steak Rub Yield: 1/2 cup

• 4 T-Bone steaks • 2 Tablespoons cooking oil Dad’s Steak Rub (see recipe) Thaw steaks overnight in refrigerator or quickly thaw by placing sealed steaks in a sink with water for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Fire up the grill and serve up robust, savory cuts, such as Omaha Steaks’ Tbone or Rib Crown selections for your Father’s Day celebrations. The T-bone is a thick cut to give you more bone-in strip and butter-tender Filet Mignon for even the heartiest of appetites, while the Rib Crown is carved from the most prized part of the Ribeye and is known for exceptional marbling, flavor and tenderness. Both cuts are grain-fed, aged to perfection and flash-frozen to capture freshness and flavor. For more steak recipes for your Father’s Day celebration, visit www. omahasteaks.com.

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Store in an airtight container or zip lock bag for up to 6 months. Note: To prepare cumin and coriander, toast by placing in dry pan over medium heat, shaking pan about 2 minutes until seasonings start to brown. Crush using bottom of pan on cutting board or with mortar and pestle.

Rib Crown Steaks with Roasted Root Vegetables Prep time: 60 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Total time: 1 hour and 15 minutes Servings: 4 • 4 Rib Crown Steaks • 2 Tablespoons cooking oil • 2 Tablespoons Dad’s Steak Rub (see recipe) Roasted Root Vegetables (see recipe) Thaw steaks overnight in refrigerator or quickly thaw by placing sealed steaks in sink with water for 15 to 30 minutes. Prepare rub and vegetables. Heat grill on high. Blot dry steaks with clean paper towel, then brush each side with cooking oil. Generously season both sides of steaks with rub. Grill steaks to desired doneness. For medium rare steak, grill for about 5 minutes on first side and 3 to 4 minutes on second side. Serve each steak with vegetables.

Using the Proper Grilling Technique For exceptional steaks every time, incorporate these tips from Omaha Steaks Executive Chef Karl Marsh. 1. Clean and heat the grill on high. 2. Blot dry any moisture using a clean paper towel, and then lightly oil the steak before placing it on the grill. This helps the searing process and prevents sticking. 3. Season the food before grilling. 4. Sear the outside of steaks when grilling. This really helps with the flavor and juiciness. 5. Use tongs or a spatula to turn meat on the grill. Using a fork can damage and dry out the meat. 6. Cover the grill as much as possible during the grilling process. This helps to lock in the grilled flavor and will help prevent flare-ups. 7. Keep a spray bottle with water handy to douse any unexpected flare-ups. 8. Use the 60/40 grilling method. Grill for 60 percent of the time on the first side, then grill 40 percent of the time after you turn over the food. This will give you an evenly cooked product. 9. JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 2015 SRT

T

he 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is both a highly capable offroad adventure machine, as well as a great way to get the kids from home to school and back again. But, underneath it all, its main purpose is pure excitement. It used to be that only small, two-seater cars could race around town and tear around corners. Well, the engineers at Chrysler have taken an off-road trail machine and turned it into a highway rocket. The Grand Cherokee SRT is the product of Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology team, who are dedicated to building high-performance vehicles. This team was created in the late 1980s

to develop the iconic Dodge Viper, a two-seater with a monster V-10 engine. The Viper wasn’t a big seller, but it did shine a spotlight on the brand. Slowly, the SRT engineering and marketing teams began to migrate over to other cars in the Chrysler tent, and by 2006, the Jeep Grand Cherokee got its own SRT model. But, the 2015 edition is really something special. Although the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a serious off-road performer and can tackle rough terrain without breaking a sweat, the SRT version should be considered strictly for on-road excitement. Although it looks exactly the same from the outside, it’s what’s under the sheet metal that makes this SUV very different. A 6.4 liter Hemi V-8 sits under the hood just waiting to spring to life. Crank up the engine, and it roars. This 475 hp beast will get this sizable SUV from zero to 60 in 4.8 seconds, awfully fast for something this large. If good fuel economy is a priority, then

find another vehicle, because this Grand Cherokee gets 13 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Expect even worse numbers if you want to really have some fun. And, after all, fun is what this SUV is made for. The SRT’s exterior sports distinctive highlights to make sure your neighbors know what you’re driving, from the bright red painted Brembo brakes to the 20 inch Pirelli Scorpion all-season tires to the front and rear light treatments. The interior boasts a beautifully designed padded steering wheel with a back-lit SRT logo. The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with a starting MSRP of $64,695, is just so much fun to drive and to drive fast, you won’t want to drive anything else. Meet Kassidi Kaminski

F

ort Bend Christian Academy (FBCA), the largest private school in Fort Bend, is strongly committed to Christian beliefs and principles and serves the entire Christian community. “It is the mission of Fort Bend Christian Academy to equip students to thrive spiritually, academically, socially and physically.” One senior who has achieved success in all aspects of her school life, academics and sports, and is a respected leader is Kassidi Kaminski. Kassidi is an exceptional student academically. She has taken honors classes all four years of high school and has achieved all A’s. She is a member of the Academic Team, Mu Alpha Theta, National English Honor Society, Interact Club, Student Leadership Community, Spanish Club and the Big Sister Little Sister Club. She has been recognized by her teachers and peers with numerous awards, including the Soaring Eagle Award for three years, chosen by her teachers and based on Christian character, academic achievement, service and school involvement. Kassidi is also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars and has been awarded Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar with Honor, Freshman Honors Biology Award, Sophomore Honors English Award and Junior Homecoming Princess. When asked what value Kassidi lives by, she replied, “To love others and to love Jesus. The most important things in this life are your relationship with God and your relationships with

Kassidi

people. If I don’t spend my time loving others the best I can and showing them the love of Christ, I’m not doing my job very well.” Kassidi is a talented athlete. For all four years of her high school career, she has been a member of the Varsity Cross Country team, Varsity Basketball team and Varsity Track team. When asked what is the one thing she will treasure the most about her high school experience, she said, “The camaraderie of my three sports’ teams. I’ve made lifelong friends through sports, and I’ve been blessed with some pretty amazing coaches over the years. Ninety percent of the best memories I have from high school all involve being with my teammates.” Kassidi was awarded the Scholar Athlete Award, Most Improved Runner Award, Most Improved Player Award in Basketball and the prestigious Golden Eagle Award, which is the highest honor an athlete at FBCA can achieve honoring Christian leadership, teamwork, courage and fair play. Her team finished as the runner-up in the 2013 Texas Association for Private and Parochial Schools 4A Girls’ Basketball tournament, and her Cross Country team placed second in the All-District meet. Kassidi enjoys facilitating her teammates to succeed. “It’s rewarding to help others become better at the sport you love. I want my teammates to know they can have someone trustworthy and reliable to talk to, to help them and to guide them.”

Kassidi is a recognized leader at Fort Bend Christian Academy. This year, she is President of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club Senior Class Representative, Student Council Class Representative, Varsity Track Co-Captain and Varsity Basketball Chaplain. Last year, she was the Vice President of the National Honor Society and Varsity Cross Country CoCaptain, and she was Junior Varsity Basketball Captain as a sophomore. She is the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Representative and a graduate of the Student Leadership University. Outside of her busy school schedule, Kassidi generously gives her time to help the less fortunate. Kassidi participated in mission trips to Cherokee North Carolina, Carolina Creek Christian Camp and New York to assist people in need, painting homes, babysitting, teaching and tutoring. She also volunteers at the Fort Bend Literacy Council and graduated as salutatorian of her class.

This fall, Kassidi will attend the Liberal Arts Honors College at the University of Texas at Austin to study Psychology in an effort to continue her commitment to public service. Congratulations on your enormous success Kassidi, and good luck as you continue down the path of distinction.

Celebrate Graduates

DIY Party Décor and Gifts with

G

raduation marks a major milestone in any student’s life, and the event calls for a celebration to remember. Whether you’re planning a party in honor of the graduate or commemorating the accomplishment from afar, consider these fun Do It Yourself (DIY) party projects. Borrow an idea from Kelly Mindell, author of the Studio DIY blog. Graduation Balloon Superlatives feature colorful floating balloons, which bring fun and whimsy to any occasion. The project uses pictures of guests to give each one a special or funny recognition such as “Best Hair” or “Most Likely to be President.” Get creative to recognize all of your guests, and have fun watching everyone discover their very own piece of the party. When you can’t attend the festivities but want to honor a deserving student’s accomplishment, surprise them with a Money Confetti Popper. This easy-to-assemble popper is filled with money and confetti to create an instant celebration. For more ideas for honoring this year’s graduating class, visit www.balloontime.com.

DIY

Surprise Money Confetti Poppers

Supplies: Confetti Poppers Confetti Money

C

reate your own confetti poppers by picking up some clear cake push-pops at the grocery store and filling them with confetti. If you have pre-filled poppers, empty them. Then, put a thin layer of confetti on the bottom, drop in the cash – not too much or it won’t be able to “pop!” You can always give multiple poppers! Then, cover completely with confetti. Close them up, and you’re ready to go!

D

rop photos from your computer into a text editing program and crop or resize them to similar sizes. Leave a large white border – at least 1/4 inch on sides and top and about an inch on bottom – around each photo. Below each photo, type the superlative, and then print photos. Or, print photos first and trim, leaving the same white border. Then, handwrite superlatives with a marker. If your photos are already printed, cut them down to same size and tape to cardstock. Cut out, leaving the same white border above and write superlatives. Inflate balloons with the helium tank and tie with twine or other string. Attach superlatives to twine using tape. Let balloons float on ceiling if you’re indoors, or attach weight to bottom of string behind superlative and display around party. Tip: If you want superlatives to be visible from all sides, make two copies of each photo and tape them back to back when attaching to twine. Use a thinner cardstock or paper if you want balloons to float on ceiling. Latex balloons will typically float for 5 to 7 hours. Temperature, humidity and altitude may affect float time. Ask Alex: College Questions

A

lex Belt is a mom, business owner and all around in the know kind of gal. Friends call on her relentlessly for advice. With students gearing up with their freshman year of college this fall, we’re doing what everyone else does – asking Alex!

Q

My daughter is an incoming freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University. Should she live in a dorm or off campus?

A

I feel that living in a dorm as a freshman is a part of the ultimate college experience. The dorm provides a community for your student and almost automatically lines up acquaintances and potential friends.

Q A

My son is going to an outof-state college. How will he find a roommate?

A great source for locating a roommate is www.RoomSurf. com. You will be provided a list of potential roommates in three simple steps: 1. Create a profile, and choose your college. 2. Complete the roommate survey. After answering a series of questions, you can immediately review all same-sex users ranked by compatibility percentage. 3. Once you receive a list of matches, you can email them or connect with them on Facebook. If you find a strong potential candidate, then you both will have to submit a room request on your college website.

Q A

What are some of the must haves for a dorm room?

Once the dorm is set up, you will probably go shopping for all of the things that you forget or realize your student needs, but here are my top 10 must haves: 1. Coordinating room décor 2. Storage bins 3. Desk items like a lap top, printer, lamp, pens, highlighters, pencils, case and several disk drives 4. Coffee pot 5. Tons of hangers 6. Snacks labeled with the student’s name 7. Toiletries, cleaning supplies, broom and toilet paper 8. Towels 9. Flip-flops and shower caddy if the student will use a communal shower 10. Laundry soap

Q

My daughter wants a headboard for her dorm, but I do not want to spend a fortune. Do you have any Do It Yourself (DIY) tips?

A

You can find different DIY headboards on Pinterest, but here is one I love: 1. Cut plywood or cardboard to desired measurements. fort bend

magazine • June 2015

59

2. Lay the headboard over thick, quilted batting. Cut a two-inch perimeter around the headboard. Fold batting around the edge and tape it down. 3. Iron fabric and lay headboard on fabric. Cut a two-inch perimeter around the headboard and fold over. Using a staple gun, staple fabric through batting, starting at points between the center top and center bottom.

Q A

How do you decide who buys what for a dorm room?

My daughter shares a bathroom with a roommate and her two suitemates. Before school started, they all decided who would bring what, so four girls didn’t show up with four of the same items. They do not share shampoo, body soap or conditioner. They keep a list in the bathroom that rotates every two weeks on who purchases 12 rolls of toilet paper, hand soap and who is responsible for cleaning the bathroom.

sons about money management, and money kids save from summer jobs can be used to pay for additional expenses that do not fall under the umbrella of college tuition, including books, food or even housing.

How to Approach

Look into College Savings Plans

Saving for College P

arents typically have a lot on their plates. In addition to juggling life’s daily events, parents also must keep their eyes on the future, which typically involves planning for retirement and saving money for their kids’ college educations. Though both rank high on many parents’ priority lists, parents should approach college savings much differently than they do retirement savings. lifetime than someone with just a high school diploma, so a college diploma still offers financial incentives that can soften the blow of repaying college loans.

Prioritize Retirement Savings Over Saving for College Some parents might feel a degree of guilt if they deposit more money into their retirement accounts each month than they do into their kids’ college funds. But, such a strategy is nothing to feel guilty about. College students who take out loans have a lifetime ahead of them to repay those loans, while their parents have far less time to grow their retirement savings. No parent wants their child to be saddled with debt after they earn their degree, but that does not mean parents should sacrifice security in their golden years just so their child can have minimal or no debt when they graduate from college. Studies show that the average college graduate still earns roughly a million dollars more over his or her

Simply socking money away in a savings account is no longer enough to finance a college education. That’s because interest rates on standard savings accounts are very low, and as The College Board® notes, the college tuition rate of increase is substantially higher than the general inflation rate. In addition, the average 2013-14 tuition increase was 3.8 percent at private colleges and 2.9 percent at public universities. Both of those figures are higher than the average increase in personal incomes, meaning parents are earning less, while tuition costs are rising. So, parents who want to finance all or some of their kids’ college tuitions need to be more creative.

Encourage Students to Save for Their Own Expenses Many high school students are not in a position to work a lot or even at all during a school year. And working too much may ultimately affect students’ performance in the classroom. But, parents can allow kids to work during summer vacations and encourage youngsters to save a substantial amount of their earnings from summer jobs. This can teach kids valuable les-

College education savings plans are an option, and many, including a Coverdell Education Savings Account and the popular 529 Savings Plan, allow earnings in the account to grow tax-free. Even withdrawals from college savings plans are typically taxfree as long as those withdrawals are used to finance educational expenses. Rules vary depending on the type of account, so parents should not assume all withdrawals are tax-free. But, college savings plans can also have an impact on a student’s financial aid eligibility, as these investments are often treated as parental assets. So, parents should explore all of the ins and outs of the various college savings plans available to them before opening any accounts.

Urogynecology Center

Texas Bar Foundation Awards Grant to Child Advocates of Fort Bend The Texas Bar Foundation recently awarded Child Advocates of Fort Bend (CAFB) a $9,000 grant. The funds will be used to partially fund two forensic interviewers in the Children’s Advocacy Center (CAC) at CAFB. CAFB is the only agency in Fort Bend County exclusively dedicated to providing critical services, all free of charge, to abused and neglected children and their non-offending family members. The agency’s forensic interviewing program began in 1997. In 2014 alone, the forensic interviewers conducted 691 interviews. Every alleged child victim of abuse in Fort Bend County is directed to the CAFB office for a forensic interview to help determine whether or not abuse has occurred. Specially trained forensic interviewers interview the child in a childfriendly, age-appropriate environment. Each interview is digitally recorded onto DVDs and provided to district attorneys, Child Protective Services (CPS) and law enforcement. The CAC collaborates with the District Attorney’s Office, law enforcement and CPS to ensure a complete and seamless process in capturing and sharing interviews to support the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, to staff the case, design an effective, therapeutic approach and to prepare the prosecution. Volunteers are needed to help in the agency’s CAC and in the Court Appointed Special Advocates Program. For more information, contact Volunteer Services at 281-344-5146.

each step demonstrates mastery of the genre. Sure, militarily, some of the devices would fail the common sense test, but visually, they are a virtual feast. This movie does Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky in an action sequence. not try to pretend to be anything that it is not. It is the definition of an action movie. Everything about it speaks to the film’s authenticity. The music adds another layer and keeps it driving forward. The story itself is linear, with few curves. It is simply a race for survival. Mad Max: Fury Road is reminiscent of a mixed martial arts fight, not one where a fighter dances on the outside, looking to fit in the perfect shot. No, this is one where both fighters stay in the pocket and pound on each other in a war of attrition. Throughout the film, tension is created through action. For only seven minutes during the entire two hours are there moments of stillness. Summer movies are often packed with characters long on exposition but short on caring from the audience. This movie is the opposite. There is very little explanation of the “who’s” and “why’s.” It is just an action-packed thrill ride. Intense is an overused word, but here it fits. George Miller does an amazing job of lighting up the stage and telling the viewer next to nothing. The visual treat alone will bring back many more installments. If you are looking for humor or anything romantic, there are other options. If you want action, this may be the best the summer has to offer.

W

hat do you do to reintroduce a film franchise? You give its fans exactly what they want. That is precisely what director George Miller did in reimagining the world of Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road. The clichés pile up with this action-packed, thrilling, nitrous oxide-infused testosterone romp. Maybe the last one will not fill reviewers’ accolades, but it should. Fans of the series know that in 1979, a small Australian independent film named Mad Max launched the movie career of a then unknown actor named Mel Gibson. The movie spawned two more successful incarnations – Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior in 1981 and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome in 1985. The latest incarnation stars Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa and Tom Hardy as the angry wanderer Max in search of . . . who knows? This is not a movie with depth. Lost in the realms of superheroes and monster films is the classic action movie. In Fury Road, there is next to no character development and no funny quips. It is a chase from start to finish. Plan now to golf “fore” education in the Fort Bend Education Foundation’s 16th annual Back to School Scramble golf tournament scheduled for Monday, August 24th at Sweetwater Country Club. Schlumberger is presenting the Back to School Scramble, chaired by Claude Leatherwood, with lunch provided by Chick-fil-A. Entry fee includes lunch, golf and cart, beverages, dinner reception and special gifts. Sponsorship opportunities are available, along with Foursome Teams for $1,000 and individual entries for $275. The Education Foundation touches every school in Fort Bend ISD. Since its inception, the Education Foundation has awarded over $4 million through its grants to teachers and schools. These grants enable teachers to provide innovative classroom projects for which tax dollars are not available, and they help new teachers to outfit their new classrooms. Community participation in the annual Back to School Scramble helps make Fort Bend Education Foundation’s mission a reality – to enrich and enhance the quality of education for all Fort Bend ISD students. Red Snapper Ceviche from the Summer Fare.

ugar Land has a few hidden treasures, and Fernando’s Latin Cuisine is one of them. Fernando, originally from Ecuador, began as a teen in the food world and worked his way up from every position to now owner and chef. I visited with him in his kitchen and saw the passion of a true artist/chef explaining to me how every piece of the meat can be used from sauces to steaks to carnitas. His talent has evolved over the years into what he calls “a fusion of old-fashioned Italian and South American.” I asked Fernando how important small restaurants are to his community, and his eyes lit up. “My focus is that I want diners to be satisfied and have an experience of not only amazing food but amazing service. We pull chairs, we tend to our guests here – it’s special.” Fernando is so fine-tuned to his craft that he runs his place like a small house. He is everything from the manager to the chef, and because of that handson approach, nothing falls through the cracks. I understand too well this concept as an artist myself and the similarities of running a restaurant that caters to a very intimate diner is the same as my client base that wants me to be their personal portrait artist. We both care deeply about what we do and that everyone feels like family. The summer menu is debuting this month and boasts a beautiful very tasty

filet topped with a creamy blend of crawfish and fresh avocado sauce. In Fernando’s kitchen, I watched him slice a well-appointed filet, then a smaller piece of meat and cut the smaller pieces into a carnitas. A pinch of his “special salts” and a proud smear of his homemade chimichurri sauce dresses both cuts before going onto his grill. I watched intently as he created the dishes, and he said, “Oh Alisa, you’re learning all my secrets!” The ceviche is also a summer favorite as it is light and refreshing and easy when it’s too hot outside. Fernando’s is a blend of marinated red snapper tossed with a citrus blend of lemon and lime and peppers. When plated, it is then tossed with fresh tomatoes and cilantro. Yum! Without a doubt, the Corvina, a delicate white fish that he imports from Peru, is my favorite. This fish is like an angel’s kiss. It goes without saying that Fernando is living the American Dream. He started as a child in an industry that he grew to love and has a passion for his restaurant that he calls his “baby.” Each day, he cares and feeds this space by tending to the flowers, purchasing only the freshest products, greeting his guests and impeccably cooking for all who visit him. Fernando’s is truly a treasure in our community!

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital Unveils New TrueBeam Linear Accelerator Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital has installed a new radiation therapy system that integrates imaging, beam delivery and motion management to give physicians unmatched control of radiation therapy. “This is a major step forward in cancer treatment,” said Clive Shkedy, MD, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology services at Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land. “The new system allows us to limit side effects and reduce the impact on surrounding tissue while improving the delivery of radiation. It actually gives us a 4-D image as we work – a three-dimensional view of the tumor along with any movement – so that we can deliver radiation doses to a precise spot at the most opportune moment.” The TrueBeam system is ideal for treating tumors of the lung, abdomen, breast, prostate, head and neck. TrueBeam also allows for quicker treatment sessions and a more comfortable patient experience. The Houston Methodist Cancer Center at Sugar Land is set up to conduct clinical trials using the new TrueBeam system and can electronically transfer data to trial organizers. “Our successful approach relies on our collaborative approach with patients,” said Dr. Shkedy. “The TrueBeam system gives our team another powerful tool that we can use to

Living the Sweet Life: Thinking About Your Transition

I

want to get you thinking about something that most of you will not want to do. I want you to think about what you want to happen when you are no longer living. Recently, I got a call from one of my Alisa Murray Photography families asking if I could produce a piece of art for their mother’s funeral service. They had always known that when she passed, she would want my capture of her to be what people remembered. Everything that needed to be done was pre-planned, and her transition was a beautiful one. By complete contrast, when my own mother was killed, it was a hectic time. You can imagine what a sudden death looks like: chaos and confusion. Mother did not want to be buried, but she was, because my grandparents could not go through with cremating her, and my father wanted us to “see” our mother in her casket. No one was prepared for her to just – “poof” – be gone. When my father exited his stage, I was in a photo shoot, and during lunch, I called to wish him a Happy Birthday, only to be informed that he had promptly and without warning dropped dead at home. Death is something that happens to us all and yet, for almost everyone, it is a subject that few wish to discuss. It scares us to think about not being the only thing we really “know.” We don’t remember being a floating soul in heaven waiting to be given our earthly casings or bodies. It’s one of the things I need to talk to God about when I get there. I think if we did remember, there would be way less worry about leaving here. We would all know that it’s a transition to where we have already been, and it’s a cycle. It’s in the missing of the other souls – the ones we love, have loved and have a history with – that scares us more I think, so we just don’t think about it at all. I know that this comes across as very matter of fact, and quite frankly, it really is. Many people have transitioned in my life, and I have some thoughts about the transition and more specifically, about planning the rest of your family for the inevitable. Everyone should write down what they want to have happen when they go. I know you don’t want to think about it. Pretend that you are packing for a trip and will not ever be the same again. Think about your favorite things that you have acquired in your life, and make a list of who gets what. ally sent her diamonds to us, giving us specifically what she wanted us to have before she no longer remembered who we were. I like that. The last thing I want to have happen is all of my hard work acquiring beautiful things being rummaged through and fought over by those left behind. Nobody can argue if you wrote it down, and after all, these things are yours. Don’t you want to have a say in who gets what? Next, think about your service. Do you want to be cremated? Do you want to be buried? Find a reputable funeral home, and get that done and paid for. When Nana transitioned, she had all of this done. She lived to 102, and nothing was left unsaid, unloved or undone. I like this, too. It’s why I always hug and kiss my family and clients and make sure that my last contact with everyone is something that if I were to transition, it’s “all good.” I want to be cremated and have a large party. Afterward, I want to be placed in my Louis Vuitton bag. On my birthday each year, the remaining generations are required to enjoy a martini and pass down some beautiful story of my life to younger generations. I have measured the space. There’s enough room for two in my bag, and my love has no argument in being placed there with me. My son, who is 12, has decided that he will have to purchase a Louis Vuitton trunk, because he really wants all of us to be in one big Louis Vuitton and used as a piece of furniture amongst our family. Gotta love the way he thinks! Take Care of YOU!
